Terrence Stephen McQueen, nicknamed the "King of Cool", was born on March 24, 1930. He was an American actor. His antihero persona, emphasized during the height of the counterculture of the 1960s, made him a top box-office draw during the 1960s and 1970s. McQueen received an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Sand Pebbles. His other popular films include The Cincinnati Kid, Love With the Proper Stranger, The Thomas Crown Affair, Le Mans, Bullitt, The Getaway, and Papillon, as well as the all-star ensemble films The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and The Towering Inferno.
In 1974, McQueen became the highest-paid movie star in the world, although he did not act in film for another four years. He was combative with directors and producers, but his popularity placed him in high demand and enabled him to command the largest salaries.
In 1947, after receiving permission from his mother since he was not yet 18 years old, McQueen enlisted in the Marines and was sent to Parris Island for boot camp. He was promoted to private first class and assigned to an armored unit. He initially reverted to his prior rebelliousness and was demoted to private seven times. He took an unauthorized absence by failing to return after a weekend pass expired, staying with a girlfriend for two weeks until the shore patrol caught him. He resisted arrest and spent 41 days in the brig. After this he resolved to focus his energies on self-improvement and embraced the Marines' discipline. He saved the lives of five other Marines during an Arctic exercise, pulling them from a tank before it broke through ice into the sea. He was assigned to the honor guard responsible for guarding the presidential yacht of US President Harry Truman. McQueen served until 1950, when he was honorably discharged. He later said he had enjoyed his time in the Marines. He remembered the Marines as a formative time in his life, saying, "The Marines made a man out of me. I learned how to get along with others, and I had a platform to jump off of."
McQueen owned a number of classic motorcycles, as well as several exotics and vintage cars. In spite of numerous attempts, McQueen was never able to purchase the Ford Mustang GT 390 he drove in Bullitt, which featured a modified drivetrain that suited McQueen's driving style. One of the two Mustangs used in the film was badly damaged, judged beyond repair, and believed to have been scrapped until it surfaced in Mexico in 2017, while the other one, which McQueen attempted to purchase in 1977, is hidden from the public eye. At the 2018 North American International Auto Show the GT 390 was displayed, in its current non-restored condition, with the 2019 Ford Mustang "Bullitt".
McQueen followed a daily two-hour exercise regimen, involving weightlifting and, at one point, running 5 miles (8 km), seven days a week. McQueen learned the martial art Tang Soo Do from ninth-degree black belt Pat E. Johnson.
According to photographer William Claxton, McQueen smoked marijuana almost every day; biographer Marc Eliot stated that McQueen used a large amount of cocaine in the early 1970s. He was also a heavy cigarette smoker. McQueen sometimes drank to excess; he was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1972.

Comenzando con un poco de historia, Bullitt es el nombre de la película que protagonizó Steve McQueen haciendo el personaje de Frank Bullitt, un detective que está en un caso protección a testigos. Lo que hace memorable a esta película, es la persecución en las calles de San Francisco entre un Mustang GT 390 Fastback de 1968 y un Dodge Charger R/T.
Tanto fue el impacto que generó esta película que Ford decidió lanzar una edición especial haciendo tributo al segundo protagonista, el Ford Mustang. La primera edición especial del Bullitt fue en el 2001, esta edición resalta el color verde “Dark Highland Green” y los rines de 5 puntas en color negro. La segunda edición de Bullitt llegó en el 2009 con el diseño tipo fastback, ofreciéndose en dos colores, el verde “DHG” y en negro, los indicadores del tablero tenían un estilo retro además de que en esta edición cuenta con la característica de tener un sistema de escape que asemeja el sonido del Mustang 68 de la película.
Con la versión más reciente del Mustang, la edición del Bullitt luce mucho mejor que nunca, más ancho, agresivo y potente. De inicio resalta el color verde “Bullitt” (ya no es el “DHG”) y los rines de aluminio de 5 puntas de 19 pulgadas con acabado negro, incorporando llantas 255/40 R19 al frente y 275/40 R19 atrás, con este ancho, las llanta sobresalen de los rines dándole un aspecto retro. A pesar de que la llanta es de perfil bajo, podemos ver que tiene suficiente cuerpo para soportar las irregularidades del camino.
Al frente, tenemos una parrilla de panal lisa, ya que no cuenta con las molduras que vemos en el actual Mustang GT, además, tiene un delineado en cromo haciendo resaltar su diseño retro. Desde esta perspectiva podemos notar las “caderas” del eje trasero. En la parte de atrás no tendremos el pequeño spoiler trasero, dándole un diseño más limpio a esta línea fastback. En la parte de atrás resaltan las luces traseras de LED con “animación” al momento de poner las direccionales o intermintentes. Una de las mayores características que se nota en el Mustang Bullitt, es que no tendremos el emblema del pony en ninguna parte del auto con excepción en los rines (muy pequeños), este mítico emblema de la parte trasera se sustituye con una diana y las letras Bullitt al centro. Una de las satisfacciones que tendrás es que sin importar en donde dejes estacionado el Mustang Bullitt, obtendrás una gran postal.
Con la llave de presencia, sólo es cosa de acercarse a él para ingresar, al momento de abrir la puerta tendremos en las luces de cortesía proyectando el emblema de Mustang en el piso. Al acceder al interior, podemos ver las vestiduras en piel de color negro con las costuras en verde. Los asientos delanteros tienen ajuste eléctrico de varias posiciones además de calefacción y ventilación. Aunque no lo parezca, el Mustang es vehículo de 4 plazas, en una configuración 2+2, tendremos asientos traseros, pero por cuestiones de espacio, no hay muchas posibilidades de que alguien pueda ir atrás cómodamente y de alguna manera esos asientos traseros preferimos considerarlos más de adorno que funcionales.
El panel de instrumentos del Mustang Bullitt cuenta con la novedad de que es totalmente digital, el clúster de 12 pulgadas nos permitirá ver las funciones de este auto, además del velocímetro y tacómetro, podemos seleccionar los indicadores de temperatura de aceite, transmisión, diferencial, consumo de combustible, modos de manejo, presión de neumáticos, ajustes del vehículo entre otras más.
Por si esto es poco, este display te permite mostrar tres modos:
Normal: Muestra el velocímetro y tacómetro en dos “relojes” grandes.
Sport: El tacómetro se vuelve una combinación de “análogo” y de carreras.
Pista: Los “relojes” cambian por un tacómetro tipo auto de carreras y el velocímetro se vuelve digital con números grandes.
Para poder interactuar el panel de instrumentos, el volante de tres brazos rectos y profundos con su estilo retro tiene tantos botones que prácticamente no tienes que soltar el volante para realizar cualquier ajuste. Dentro de las funciones que podemos operar son: controlar el sistema de infoentretenimiento, contestar y colgar llamadas, configurar el panel de instrumentos con la computadora de viaje. Una de las funciones que cuenta este volante es poder configurar comportamiento del Bullitt con un botón que tiene la imagen del pony.
El tablero asemeja a ese estilo retro que hemos visto en los primeros Mustang, en el lado del copiloto tendremos una placa conmemorativa que, hasta donde sabemos, indica el número de unidad para esta edición. Hay que mencionar que en México se ofrecieron 150 unidades para venta del Bullitt 2019. Al centro del tablero, en la parte superior entre las ventilas del aire acondicionado, tendremos dos medidores, uno es para la presión de aceite y el otro indica el vacío para el motor, ambos dando ese aspecto de performance como un auto de carreras. Debajo de estos indicadores tendremos la pantalla touch de 8 pulgadas con el sistema SYNC 3, este gran sistema de infoentretenimiento incorpora radio AM/FM, auxiliar, conexión Bluetooth, USB con Android Auto y Apple CarPlay. Para complementar el info-entretenimiento, tendremos un sistema de audio Shaker Pro con 9 bocinas incluyendo SubWoofer para amenizar el interior con tu música favorita, aunque en mi caso nada mejor que escuchar el V8 naturalmente aspirado. Debajo de la pantalla touch tendremos los controles del aire acondicionado de doble zona y los botones para calentar o ventirlar los asientos y en el inferior del tablero tendremos el botón de encendido acompañado de unos interruptores del modo de manejo, dirección, control de tracción de estabilidad y las intermitentes.
Uno de los pequeños placeres de la vida sin duda es encender el motor V8 de 5.0 L que tiene el Mustang Bullitt, este motor Coyote incorpora un sistema de Inyección Dual generando 480 Hp y 420 lb/pie de torque que se manifiestan en un característico y hermoso gorgoreo. A pesar de que este auto sigue la tradición de ser “ruidoso”, el Bullitt cuenta con un sistema de escape de válvulas activas que permite controlar la intensidad de estas notas que emite el motor a través de “el botón del pony” que se encuentra en el volante. Las opciones van desde lo más civilizado en el modo Silencioso con las válvulas cerradas, Normal donde ya escuchamos el característico gorgoreo, Deportivo y Pista dónde con las válvulas totalmente abiertas permitiendo escuchar la mejor sinfonía del Coyote de 5.0L.
Si de por sí ya es muy especial este Mustang Bullitt, algo que los verdaderos puristas amarán de este auto es que viene con una transmisión manual de 6 velocidades, permitiéndonos a nosotros disfrutar de un manejo más “purista” al tener esa pequeña sensación de control total al conducirlo. Para hacer más placentero los cambios, se puede activar la opción Rev Match en la que al momento de hacer cambio de velocidad el Bullit subirá las RPM’s del motor para que este no pierda “ritmo” entre una relación a otra, esta “asistencia” se nota más cuando haces un retroceso de velocidad causando una gran emoción de escucharlo gruñir.
Con frenos de disco en las 4 ruedas y enormes cálipers delanteros Brembo de 6 pistones pintados en rojo, son lo suficiente para detener el galope de este Bullitt, este sistema de frenos cuenta con sistema ABS. En seguridad, este Mustang cuenta con varias asistencias que te permitirán divertirte con él sin llegar a correr un riesgo. Dentro de las asistencias vamos a tener el control electrónico de estabilidad y de tracción Advance trac con diferentes modos: Normal, Nieve/Lluvia, Deportivo y Pista, los cuales controla la respuesta del motor, la sensibilidad del acelerador además de la distribución de la potencia a las llantas traseras. Una de las asistencias que facilita su manejo es la asistencia para el arranque en pendientes ya que así no terminarás acabándote clutch por si aún se te dificulta la maniobra. En el interior tendremos 8 bolsas de aire (2 frontales, 2 laterales, 2 tipo cortina y 2 para las rodillas del conductor y pasajero) además del sistema de anclaje LATCH para las sillas para niños.
Manejar el Mustang Bullitt es una experiencia muy satisfactoria, con los tres pedales te da una diferente perspectiva de conducción al tener 480HP a tu disposición y tratar de controlarlos con tu pie izquierdo. Teniendo entendido que este auto está pensado para divertirte ya que cuenta con el Track App (aplicaciones para su uso en pista que puedes medir aceleración, frenado y bloquear el eje delantero para “quemar llanta” sin castigar los frenos) se comporta muy bien en la ciudad, una de sus cualidades es que la suspensión tiene con una configuración independiente tipo Mac Pherson al frente e independiente de enlace integral atrás, a pesar de ser deportiva, tiene cierto confort para andar en la ciudad, lo cual se agradece yendo en caminos en mal estado. Parte de este confort en la conducción también lo proporcionan los asientos, así que andar en el Bullitt no es tan desgastante para este tipo de auto. La posición de manejo es algo que también sobresale, teniendo un buen espacio en el interior la altura del asiento te permite ir lo más bajo posible para generar un centro de gravedad bajo (para el conductor). El volante tiene la opción de ajustarse en altura y profundidad para tener una buena posición de manejo. Es tan bueno el diseño que cuenta este interior que puedes “darte el lujo” de hacer los cambios de velocidad recargándote en el descansa brazos, “como patrón”.
El Mustang Bullitt está planeado para que lo configures a tu gusto, en el interior, comenzando por el tablero y sus tres modos de proyección, también le puedes cambiar las combinaciones de colores, tanto así que hasta puedes “crear” tu color y verlo reflejando en el panel de instrumentos. Otra configuración será la iluminación del interior, ofreciendo, a diferencia del tablero, sólo con algunos colores como el azul, rojo, verde, morado entre otros para darle ambiente. Pasando al desempeño, también te permitirá ajustar el Bullitt conforme a tu modo de conducción, comenzando con la dirección si la quieres suave o deportiva, el sonido de los escapes, la respuesta del motor.
En el tema del rendimiento de combustible, el Bullitt no nos sorprende, con un tanque de 60 L podemos tener una autonomía estimada de 320 km. Teniendo la ventaja de la transmisión manual, podremos buscar el modo de hacer un poco más rendidor el consumo conduciendo en 5ta o 6ta velocidad además de tener el modo Lluvia/Nieve activado para bajar las revoluciones del motor. Debido a que nuestra prueba fue más en ciudad y en caminos con pendientes, el rendimiento estuvo entre los 5.5 km/l, una cifra considerable para un motor de 480HP, haciendo un estimado en condiciones más favorables, podemos considerar que pueda llegar hasta los 7 km/l y probablemente de 9 hasta 10 en carretera a una velocidad constante. Pero de lo que puedes estar muy seguro es que sin duda valdrá cada mililitro de combustible que consuma este pony.
Algo que notamos conduciendo el Mustang Bullitt es que es muy difícil encontrarle a simple vista defectos a este auto deportivo, primero porque te enamoras de él al primer contacto, además, para este tipo de auto sabes bien de sus carencias, ya sea en el consumo de combustible, visión dentro del habitáculo o pequeños detalles en los acabados (como en los interruptores a lado del botón de arranque que siguen sin convencerme). Algunas sugerencias que podrían considerar para este auto sería la integración de sensores de proximidad al frente, ya que, debido al largo cofre, se puede complicar la percepción y en cierto modo llegar a golpear la fascia. Otra sugerencia, aunque ya sería más como capricho, los frenos traseros no fuesen “convencionales” porque si le resta estilo después de ver el cáliper delantero. Otro detalle podría ser que la llave y en las luces de cortesía llevara el emblema de Bullitt en vez del pony, total, lo hicieron en todo el auto y les quedó muy bien.
En conclusión, el Mustang Bullitt, con un precio para la versión 2020 de $1,040,000 pesos, es el verdadero ícono americano primero, porque es uno de los autos más queridos y respetados en la industria y por otra parte porque es un tributo al protagonista de la película que todo aficionado a los automóviles debe de ver. El encanto del Mustang Bullitt es que te hará sentirte en las calles de San Francisco y cada vez que estés en el asiento del conductor y si te encuentras un Dodge Charger negro en el camino (como me sucedió) querrás iniciar una persecución.

  2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt Exterior
In front of the outside, we can see a new grid with a honeycomb pattern, black mesh. There is no pony logo, but Ford has added subtle chrome accents to the top frame. On the sides, we can see the usual Torque Thrust wheels, also based on the original car and seen in previous Bullitt iterations. In this car, they measure 19 inches and are made of aluminum. The interior is more or less standard GT with additional standard features and some unique bits. The vehicle is equipped as standard with the Premium Package, which adds leather, a larger screen for the infotainment system, ambient lighting, aluminum pedals, an aluminum satin brush on the center column, an improved audio system, control of adaptive speed and wipers.

  Ford also offers a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel as standard, as well as a fully digital 12-inch board of the 2018 Mustang facelifted. That’s 20 horsepower more compared to the standard GT, while the torque is the same.
The V-8 is coupled to a manual transmission only, with no option for an automatic. Ford has also added an active valve performance system, while the exhaust has been readjusted to give the engine a unique signature. Other improvements include an outdoor intake system, an 87 mm intake manifold with Shelby GT350 throttle bodies and a recalibrated powertrain control module.
  2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt Price and Release
The new 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt starts at $ 46,595, not including delivery and destination fees of $ 900. This is a premium of $ 7,405 on the GT Premium model on which it is based, which makes sense considering the additional features and standard performance package. The Bullit falls just between the Mustang GT Premium and the Shelby GT350, $ 10,645 less than the performance model.

The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse Unveiled with V8 Power
Ford created quite a stir on Wednesday night in Detroit, taking over the majority of the downtown area for a celebration of everything Mustang and the fans who love it. The Dark Horse, which has been in development for more than three years behind closed doors, takes the essential components of the Mustang—a rear-wheel-drive coupe with a V8 engine and a manual transmission—and fine-tunes them for both street and track performance.
Initially, it was anticipated that the launch would include a coupe, convertible, and GT variant. However, Ford surprised everyone by launching the Mustang Dark Horse, the first completely new Mustang performance series since the Mustang Bullitt made its debut in 2001. The Mustang's base engine is a revised 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, and the updated 5.0-liter Coyote V8 continues to power the GT. The most recent model of the legendary pony car is the new, seventh-generation 2024 Mustang.
The 2024 Ford Mustang: First Look
Despite the fact that a lot of Baby Boomers are still passionate about Mustangs, their numbers are constantly declining. Ford has already used some of the brand's magic with the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, but the company still needs to attract new customers with its newest products. 
Every sheet of metal on the 2024 Mustang is brand-new, despite maintaining the same basic dimensions and shape. In the new design, the undercuts are gone, at least on the sides, giving it a more chiseled appearance. The Mustang was intended to have a distinctively American muscle car look, and this goal was largely accomplished.
Continuing the evolution from the 2015 model through 2019, the front fascia is more assertive and makes use of a grille that has a blunter appearance. With the exception of the Fox-body Mustangs from the 1980s and 1990s, it still has the traditional shark nose that has been a feature of the majority of Mustangs. Although triple LED projector headlights are standard, the tri-bar signature lights have been repositioned horizontally, one above each main projector.
The previous generation's three-dimensional lamps have been replaced with a more aggressive version of the flush lamps used on the Mach-E. A significant horizontal valley extends the width of the tail across the back face.
The 2024 Mustang's design is largely unchanged from its 1960s-era inspiration. The convertible top of the Mustang continues to fold almost flush with the bodywork for a neat appearance when it is down.
V8 Powered 2024 Ford Mustang: 
Upgraded versions of the powertrains currently available in non-Shelby Mustangs will be a choice when the 2024 Mustang goes on sale. That is the fourth-generation 5.0-liter Coyote V8 and the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine will be there. Ford is delaying the release of specifications so that they can release a steady stream of information leading up to the car's launch in about nine months. A Shelby GT500 replacement has not yet been announced.
Both engines are anticipated to be more efficient and to produce more power and torque than they did previously. Right now, the four-cylinder engine has 350 pound-feet of torque and 310 horsepower. (An additional 20 horsepower is provided by the high-performance package.) The engine will be updated next year with a combined dual port and direct injection system strategy. The majority of other EcoBoost engines already employ this, which helps to reduce cold emissions and increase drivability. The new 2.3 will likely have a power range of 330 to 350 hp, similar to the now-discontinued Focus RS.
The V8 has undergone more significant changes. It uses a completely new intake system in 2024 that has two throttle bodies. Each throttle body has a separate intake snorkel that receives air from an air-filter box that is located directly behind the grille. Ford won't disclose the amount of power it will generate, other than to emphasize that it will be the most potent Mustang GT to date. The Mach-1 has 470 horsepower, while the 2022 GT produces 450 horsepower. The GT is probably going to match, if not outperform, Mach 1 with the new intake system.
An upgraded version of the existing 10-speed automatic transmission is paired with both engines. The V8 still has a six-speed manual transmission option in addition to the automatic and three-pedal setup.
2024 Ford Mustang Chassis Improvements:
There have been very few changes, other than the fundamental front strut and integral link independent rear suspension design. The steering system underwent some of the most significant changes, receiving a new rack with a faster ratio, a stiffer shaft, and less compliance all around for a better feel.
You will see some changes to some of the attachment points and chassis setups, but the overall architecture hasn't changed. V8 Mustangs will get new knuckles, an aluminum control arm inside the car, and a new lower control arm. Although Ford hasn't yet disclosed the final horsepower figures for either engine, we anticipate the GT to generate close to 470 horsepower. 
An electronic drift brake will also be available on V8 Mustangs in 2024. Like the majority of contemporary automobiles, the Mustang is replacing its cable-operated parking brake with an electronic system that applies the rear brakes using the hydraulic actuator of the stability control.
If you choose the drift brake, you will receive a handle that resembles a conventional parking brake but is actually an electronic switch. The parking brake programming is changed to drift mode by the track mode app, which causes the brakes to engage much more quickly when the lever is pulled. When compared to using the traditional mechanical hand brake, it will apply four to five times as much pressure. 
Digital Beats for Kids in the Ford 2024 Mustang:
The new pony's cockpit undergoes even more substantial changes in favor of a much more contemporary aesthetic. Ford is obviously focusing on the interior experience in an effort to appeal to a younger demographic of sports car buyers. In its place, a massive digital environment replaces the conventional dual cowl dashboard. Base models feature a separated dual panel setup with a landscape 10-inch touchscreen in the middle and a digital instrument cluster display in front of the driver.
A continuous arrangement with a panel extending from the driver's side pillar across the center of the dashboard is available on Ecoboost Premium and GT models. Like many other recent models, it appears to have a single panel when turned off, but there are actually two displays—one for the instruments and a 13.2-inch touchscreen for entertainment—hidden beneath the glass.
Ford's interface designers used the Unreal 5 gaming engine software to create the graphics and animations within the system, just like other automakers like Rivian and General Motors. Any time you switch between drive modes, cluster graphic themes, or anything else, there are plenty of moving pixels.
Inside a 2024 Ford Mustang:
The Mustang's interior has been significantly improved for 2024, and it now features a twin-tablet array of screens that, in some ways, resembles more recent BMW models. The Mustang and the two-door BMW 4 Series models are comparable in size and function, but they are significantly more expensive. 
The new Mustang will continue to use the current Sync 4 infotainment system rather than switching to the new Android Automotive-based system, even though it won't be available until mid-2023. For the Mustang, Sync 4 has been given a new skin to match the rest of the visual design. Track apps and line-lock, which make on-demand burnouts simple, are also retained.
2024 Ford Mustang Interior Design:
Designers have also made a variety of improvements to materials and finishes for the physical rather than digital components of the Mustang. Interior surfaces that previously had smoother grains rather than the simulated animal grains are now being laser etched on some surfaces, while others are being covered in patterns like white noise. The speaker bezels are seamlessly incorporated into the panels around them; occasionally, the colors of the interior ambient lighting can be seen through the grilles.
Ford kept the convertible's power top system from the previous generation because the basic structure hasn't changed. Like the outgoing model, the retractable hood creates a clean profile for the convertible by sitting flush with the surrounding bodywork.
A hybrid powertrain won't be available for the new Mustang. However, the updated interior's tech-forward design and enhanced performance have what it takes to draw a new generation of owners to the family business that was founded almost 60 years ago. When the brand-new 2024 Mustang starts showing up in dealerships in one year, we'll have a clearer picture. 
The Cost of a 2024 Ford Mustang:
The price of the seventh-generation Mustang has not yet been announced. The current model's entry-level EcoBoost with a six-speed manual transmission costs $28,865. The V8-powered GT, which also comes with a six-speed stick, has a starting price of $39,440. The 2024 Mustang will undoubtedly cost more, but given the steadily declining Mustang sales in recent years, we'd be shocked if Ford introduced the new model with a significantly higher MSRP.

In the print edition of Car & Driver, January, 2019, they dove into the year's 10Best cars list. They also had a small section in the margins of the 10Best feature called "Inadequacies." In this section, they gave a quote for each car that was up for 10Best contention, but didn't make it, briefly summarizing its shortcomings. Lots of interesting insight, if you ask me! Remember that Car & Driver has a full set of tests they run to select their 10Best cars, many of them on a track, so it's not just a group of editors sitting in a room and picking which ones they like best. So, here they are:
Audi A6: "Way more luxury than sport here."
Audi A7: "It's like Audi tried to make a Tesla Model S out of a gas-powered car. Needs more sound and fury. But I guess that's what the S7 is for."
Audi RS5: "The RS5 used to have a howling V-8 and gobs of personality. This one feels sedate in comparison."
BMW i3s: "Even in its marginally sportier guise, the BMW i3 continues to be as far as you can get from the experience of driving a car while still driving a car."
BMW 640i xDrive GT: "Drives like a hockey arena."
Buick Regal GS: "The name vastly oversells its performance."
Buick Regal TourX: "Less than the sum of its parts, attractive though they are."
Honda Clarity PHEV: "As far as the effort to remove all sensory traces of dynamic motivational activity under the hood goes, this thing is a champ. The ultimate anodyne driving experience."
Honda Insight: "What to buy when you really want a Prius but can't bear to look at one."
Hyundai Accent: "There's an awful lot of competence here for the money. Not necessarily much joy but an awful lot of competence."
Hyundai Veloster: "The N splits the difference between a VW GTI and a Civic Type R without being better than either. And like all Velosters, this one is still burdened by its economy-car ethos and weird design."
Jaguar XF Sportbrake: "It's handsome as all get-out, but the interior isn't as nice as it should be, the powertrain is not as refined as it should be, and the chassis isn't as fun as it should be."
Kia Forte: "Manages the strange trick of looking cheaper than it actually is."
Lexus ES/Hybrid: "Was the dashboard designed to win a bet? It is more terraformed than styled, with various vintages of switchgear and instruments."
Lexus LS: "I'm startled by how removed from the driving experience this car has become. Like changing lanes from your bed."
Mazda 6 2.5T: "Very refined but doesn't feel sharp. This has me worried that Mazda is starting to walk away from sportiness in favor of luxury."
Mercedes-Benz C-Class: "Much improved but still not as satisfying as the E-class."
Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class: "No longer better looking or handier than the E-class, so I fail to see the point."
Nissan Altima: "Rental-car desk agents should see a dramatic decrease in arguments with disgruntled customers."
Nissan Leaf: "A car that is crying out for automation to remove the irksome requirement to operate it."
Porsche Panamera: "Breaks Porsche's rule of functional design. Who thought that air vents that can have their direction changed only through a touchscreen was a good idea?"
Subaru WRX STI Type RA: "A relic from Subaru's Brutalist period, it's the antithesis of what 96 percent of its customer base values: It's loud, harsh, and busy. It's also incredibly fun, especially on gravel."
Toyota Avalon/Hybrid: "It exists for cruising the mega-slab, but there are no interstates on the 10Best loop."
Toyota Corolla Hatchback: "Good enough to make the 10Best list -- in 2008."
Volkswagen Jetta: "If the Golf is the sibling that lives in the suburbs, pulling down good scratch and maxing out its 401(k), the Jetta is the poor relation sheltering under a cardboard box at the bus station."
To clarify, there were a couple other vehicles that didn't make the list, but were close enough that their acknowledgements were less... mean. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio was well-loved by nearly everyone, but had so many issues that needed to be serviced when they had one long term, it was basically out of the running. The Tesla Model 3 Performance did very well too, but since it starts at nearly $80k, it was very hard to justify its value vs competitors. The Audi RS3 was on the 10Best list last year, but this year there was no way they were picking it over the M2 Competition, which has better performance and an improved ride vs its non-Competition predecessor, leaving C&D to look at the RS3 less as a threat and more as "a really expensive, really powerful VW Golf with a really small trunk." Harsh words. The Kia Stinger GT almost made the list last year, and the Kia Stinger 2.0T almost made it this year, but the Genesis G70 better captured the hearts of the C&D editors. The Camaro was bumped from the list by the newly-refreshed Mustang, not necessarily because the Mustang is the clear winner, but because Chevy's 2019 "refresh" of the Camaro gave each trim a new grille and not much else, preserving issues with livability in the cabin in the name of exterior design. And finally, Dodge brought some Challengers to the 10Best competition, for the third time in five years, but all they've done each time was add more power to a car that hasn't been fully redesigned in about 10 years.

First Look: The 2019 Mustang Bullitt
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of iconic movie “Bullitt” and its fan-favorite San Francisco car chase, Ford introduces the new 2019 Mustang Bullitt.
The Bullitt’s upgraded 5.0-liter V8 engine that will deliver at least 475 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, pushing the new Bullitt to a top speed of 163 mph – an 8 mph increase versus the latest Mustang GT.
It will be equipped with a manual transmission, and the gear shifter features a white cue ball shift knob as a nod to the original. The vehicle packages all Mustang GT Premium and Performance Package content into a vehicle that maintains the original Bullitt’s understated persona.
An active valve performance exhaust system is standard with new Black NitroPlate exhaust tips, and retuned to give the car a signature burble, as well as new Open Air Induction System and Shelby GT350 intake manifold with 87mm throttle bodies & powertrain control module calibration for optimal performance.
Other standard equipment includes a heated leather steering wheel and a 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster, identical in function to the cluster introduced on 2018 Mustang, but with a unique Bullitt welcome screen that starts in green with an image of the car rather than the pony.
Exterior paint choices are limited to Shadow Black and the classic Dark Highland Green – as worn in the movie. Other features that pay tribute to the car McQueen drove are subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows, classic torque thrust 19-inch aluminum wheels, red painted Brembo™ brakes, and a unique black front grille. Inside and out, the vehicle uses minimal badging; only the circular faux gas cap Bullitt logo on the rear center is visible on the exterior.
The leather-trimmed interior features unique green accent stitching on the dashboard, door panels, center console and seats.
Aside from the two exterior paint choices, Mustang Bullitt buyers are limited to three factory-installed options:
Bullitt Electronics Package includes navigation, driver memory seats and mirrors, upgraded sound system and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert that can alert customers of vehicles detected in difficult-to-see places
MagneRide semi-active suspension system optimizes driving performance
RECARO black leather-trimmed seats
That reputation was born after a Mustang GT fastback played a prominent role in the 1968 movie, and most notably in a chase scene that set new standards in filmmaking. The film’s nearly 10-minute-long sequence followed McQueen chasing down two hitmen in his Mustang through the streets of San Francisco.

Produksjonen av Ford Mustang nummer 10 millioner ble feiret på Flat Rock-fabrikken og i Fords hovedkvarter i Dearborn i Michigan, og inkluderte blant annet overflyvning av jagerflyene P-51 Mustang fra andre verdenskrig. Mustanger fra de mer enn 50 årene som sportsbilikonet har blitt produsert kjørte også i en parade fra Dearborn til Flat Rock-fabrikken hvor dagens Mustang blir produsert.
Mustang nummer 10 millioner er en toppmoderne 2019-modell Wimbledon White GT karbriolet med 460 hestekrefter, V8-motor og seks-trinns manuell girkasse. Dette er samme variant og farge som den første serieproduserte Mustangen (VIN 001) som kom i 1964. Sistnevnte ble levert en tre-trinns manuell girkasse og en V8-motor som leverte 164 hestekrefter.
Verdens mest solgte sportsbil
Ford Mustang er verdens mest solgte sportsbil de siste tre årene, den har vært vist i flere filmer og har flere følgere på Facebook enn noen annen bil i verden. Ford Mustang er også Amerikas mest solgte sportsbil de siste 50 årene ifølge Fords analyse av salgstall for hele sportsbilsegmentet fra IHS Markit fra 1966 til 2018.
I Europa er det solgt mer enn 38 000 Ford Mustanger siden modellen kom for salg her 2015, og i Norge er det solgt 100 Ford Mustanger i samme periode.
– Mustang er selve hjertet og sjelen i vårt selskap, og en favoritt over hele verden. Jeg får den samme gode følelsen om jeg ser den kjøre nedover gaten i Detroit, London eller Beijing som jeg fikk da jeg kjøpte min første bil, en 1966-modell som jeg krysset USA med som tenåring. Mustang bringer frem smilet uansett hvor du er i verden, sier sjefen for det globale markedet i Ford Motor Company, Jim Farley.
Ny, raskere og enda bedre Mustang
Den helt nye Ford Mustang har nylig ankommet Norge. Den er tilgjengelig både som kabriolet og fastback, og man kan velge mellom Fords 5.0-liters V8-motor som leverer 450 HK og 2.3-liters Ecoboost med 290 HK. Med V8-motoren gjør den unna 0-100 km/t på 4,3 sekunder i kombinasjon med den nye, lynraske 10-trinns automatgirkassen.
Designet er gjenkjennelig og tar vare på mer enn 50 år med tradisjoner. Samtidig har bilen gjennomgått forandringer som får den til å fremstå enda mer muskuløs, men likevel mer strømlinjeformet og atletisk. Materialvalget i interiøret gir også en mer premium følelse. Det er mykere, og med håndsøm i midtkonsollen. En ny startknapp i bilen blinker rødt fra bilen låses opp til motoren startes.
Nye Mustang har Fords første 12-tommers digitale LCD-skjerm i dashbordet. På det kan du velge mellom ulike kjøremodus – Normal, Sport, Bane og Snø/Regn-modus – i tillegg til to nye kjøreoppsett: Drag mode og MyMode.
Tidligere i år annonserte Ford introduksjonen av spesialvarianten Ford Mustang Bullitt i forbindelse med 50-års markeringen av den legendariske Warner Bros filmen med Steven McQueen i hovedrollen.

J’ai (encore) eu l’opportunité de conduire une Mustang pendant toute une semaine il n’y a pas si longtemps. Ceux qui suivent ce blogue régulièrement se rappelleront certainement que j’ai eu plusieurs Mustang comme voiture de presse au cours de ma carrière et plus encore dernièrement. Comment cela se fait-Il? C’est tout simplement que Ford lance diverses versions de cette voiture que l’on a longtemps connu comme «pony car» (vous comprendrez que le terme «pony» est dérivé de la marque Mustang). Et plus encore depuis les dernières années. Encore là, tout récemment, nous avons eu droit à des Mustang Bullitt, des Mustang Shelby, des GT et tout récemment des Mach One et des California Special. Sans parler des toutes nouvelles Mach E électriques (qui seraient, selon Auto Week, la voiture la plus vendue en Norvège au moment d’écrire ces lignes)…

Mais pourquoi tant de Mustang et peu, sinon pas de Camaro? Je trouve cela bizarre moi aussi. Ce qui est malheureux, c’est que General Motors du Canada ne nous propose pas de Camaro (la dernière que j’ai conduite remonte à septembre 2019 , une RS 1LE à quatre cylindres turbocompressé). Depuis ce temps…silence radio! Il est vrai que la Camaro ne se vend plus comme avant alors que même les Challenger se vendent plus. Mais, tout comme c’en est le cas pour la Mustang et même la Challenger (que FCA- Stellantis me propose régulièrement), Chevrolet nous dévoile aussi certaines nouvelles variantes de la sa Camaro…Alors, pourquoi n’y en a-t-il pas dans son parc de voitures de presse?
Alors, je reviens à la GT California Special que j’ai eue la semaine dernière. Les toutes premières California Special ont d’abord vu le jour en février 1968 chez quelques concessionnaires Ford de ce célèbre état américain alors que la fièvre des «pony cars» et des «muscle cars» battait son plein. Bien entendu, cette auto (en version coupé seulement) dont la différence majeure n’était que des décorations extérieures à la Shelby (prises d’air sur le côté, feux de la Thunderbird, des phares de route et plusieurs décalques) n’était disponible d’abord qu’en Californie puis en très petit nombre sur la Côte Ouest. Il était possible de la commander avec n’importe laquelle motorisation (du six en ligne au 428 avec boîte automatique ou manuelle) alors que moins de 5000 unités ont été produites. Aujourd’hui, une California Special originale peut commander un prix assez élevé sur le marché des «anciennes».

Ford a ravivé l’option California Special en 2007 (jusqu’à 2009) mais cette fois, elle était basée sur une GT. L’option est revenue de 2011 à 2014 puis en 2016 et 2017, toujours sur une version à toit fuyant de la GT ou en cabriolet. La toute dernière version de California Special est toujours basée sur une GT. Donc, sa mécanique demeure un ensemble de composantes «muscle car» incluant un V8 Coyote de 5,0 litres qui fait rien de moins que 460 chevaux et 420 livres-pied de couple. Cet ensemble dirige sa puissance aux roues arrière qui sont combinées à une suspension indépendante qui a alourdi la Mustang mais qui lui a donné une tenue de route unique pour un véhicule de ce gabarit. Notons, outre les freins plus puissants, des pneus Pirelli plus mordants qui aident la Mustang GT à mieux mordre sur le pavé.

L’intérieur de cette Américaine on ne peut plus typique est vaste et accueillant. Les très longues portières ouvrent facilement pour accueillir les passagers d’avant (comparativement à plusieurs européennes souvent vantées, l’accès à l’habitacle de la Mustang est tellement plus facile que celui des Camaro, par exemple). Un simple déclic derrière le dossier des sièges baquets fait basculer ce dossier facilitant l’accès aux places arrière (surtout avec la capote rabaissée). Si les places avant sont largement dégagées, celles d’arrière sont plus serrées pour les adultes mais très accueillantes pour les enfants. (C’est ici, comme je l’ai déjà noté dans le passé, que la Mustang est plus plaisante pour les enfants que sa concurrente la Camaro car les sièges d’arrière sont plus élevés permettant aux tout petits de mieux voir à l’extérieur. Le compartiment arrière de la Challenger est encore plus spacieux mais l’auto n’existe pas en cabriolet).

Comme par le passé, je reviens au coffre de la Mustang qui m’impressionne par ses dimensions relativement utiles. J’y ai souvent logé plusieurs valises et accessoires de plage sans me plaindre. Sauf que si l’on choisit l’option des haut-parleurs haut de gamme Bose, on se fait «voler» de la place par l’imposant «subwoofer» dans le coin arrière droite de la malle!
En ce qui a trait à la finition California Special, ce qui la distingue des GT, c’est un intérieur plus élaboré avec une sellerie spécifique avec l’inscription California Special dans le cuir des sièges d’avant et une ornementation unique nous rappelant la nomenclature du modèle.
Sur la route
La California Special est surtout une GT avec une finition unique. Par conséquent, son comportement routier est celui d’une GT selon les réglages choisis par le conducteur. En effet, lorsqu’on se glisse derrière le volant, on y note plusieurs commutateurs dont l’un d’entre eux est frappé du petit cheval en course. En pressant sur celui-ci, il est possible de changer plusieurs réglages dont celui des échappements (de Normal à Sport à Silencieux à Course). Car les échappements peuvent être bruyants (c’est comme cela que je les aime…c’est un «pony car» après tout!) alors que le mode Silencieux plaira plus à vos voisins de la banlieue tôt le matin au démarrage. Les autres réglages peuvent rendre la direction plus ferme ou encore changer la couleur de l’instrumentation du tableau de bord. Il y a tant de réglages…incluant des réglages pour utiliser l’auto en piste de course ou d’accélération (auriez-vous le courage de l’essayer dans de telles circonstances?)
Malgré tout, la California Special est toujours une GT. Avec la boîte manuelle, il faut savoir doser l’embrayage. Ma femme n’a jamais aimé que je joue de l’accélérateur pour débrayer…jusqu’à ce qu’elle conduise une telle auto. Malgré toute la docilité d’un tel V8, il faut savoir trouver le bon régime pour mâter le V8 Coyote. Toutefois, une fois maîtrisé, celui-ci est «doux comme un agneau». Cependant le mordu de performance appréciera ce V8 lorsqu’il est sollicité. Spécifions ici qu’il me faudrait un chapitre complet pour expliquer les divers modes de conduite et surtout Sport et Race qui permettent de mieux exploiter presque manuellement le potentiel de cette auto. Toutefois, pour en tirer le maximum, il me faudrait un circuit routier et une piste d’accélération…

Je ne suis pas jeune. Mais, j’ai vécu cette époque des «pony cars » et des «muscle cars». Mes jeunes frères avaient des Mustang avec des V8 «small block» et «big block». Moi, je préférais des autos plus imposantes ou encore mes «indécrottables» Ranchero (autos-pick-up, j’en ai eu trois!). J’ai donc vécu l’époque de ces Américaines avec de puissants V8 mais peu de puissance de freinage ou encore de précision de direction. Aujourd’hui, je possède toujours un roadster Cobra (une réplique) de cette époque avec freins et direction sans assistance (ce qui fait réagir mon fils d’une trentaine d’années qui me demande comment nous faisons à l’époque pour conduire de tels monstres…ce qu’il a tout de même aimé!). Mais alors, les Mustang modernes sont tellement plus dociles et maîtrisables! Ce ne sont certes plus les Mustang d’autrefois! Et pourtant, ces dernières sont toujours utilisées dans des courses de voitures d’antan (Vintages) où elles sont toujours gagnantes! C’est fou comment elles ont évolué! En passant, saviez-vous que la Mustang est la voiture sport la plus vendue au monde? Ses ventes dépassent même celles des Porsche en Allemagne!

Seule note négative, il n’est plus possible d’obtenir une Mustang à un prix «abordable» de nos jours. La Mustang n’est plus proposée en version dénudée avec un gros moteur. Même la plus modeste des Mustang d’aujourd’hui est un véhicule de luxe! Dans le cas de la California Special à boîte manuelle, passer du point mort à 100 km/h peut se faire en moins de cinq secondes (on peut le vérifier avec la commande au tableau de bord, pas besoin d’un chronomètre) ce qui est impressionnant pour une auto de presque 4000 livres. Sa tenue de route est tout simplement rassurante (les gros pneus Pirelli y sont pour quelque chose) en autant que l’on ne se prenne pas pour un Gilles Villeneuve sur les routes publiques. Oh! Il y a toujours un petit tremblement dans la structure sur les (si superbement entretenues) routes du Québec mais c’est quand même acceptable. La vitesse maximale? Selon le constructeur, ce serait autour des 250 km/h! Mais veut-on vraiment en arriver là? J’ai préféré profiter de cette légendaire auto, la capote rabaissée (c’est si facile de l’abaisser avec une simple commande au cadre du pare-brise!) avec la musique des Beach Boys (XM Sirius 105) sortant des haut-parleurs B&O…Cependant, est-ce vraiment une auto pour nos hivers? Pas nécessairement quoique j’ai déjà utilisé un coupé GT en plein hiver alors que la voiture était équipée de pneus Pirelli Sottozero qui la rendaient plus sûre. Mais, nous, les plus vieux, nous utilisions des Mustang en hiver durant les années soixante avec de vulgaires «snow grips» qu’à l’arrière. Et ça fonctionnait!
Sérieusement, c’est toujours agréable pour un amateur de voitures comme moi de mettre la main sur une Mustang, surtout une GT California Special. Ce qui est le plus impressionnant, c’est qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup de voitures de ce genre avec autant de puissance et de comportement routier sûr à ce prix (surtout à ce prix !) disponible sur le marché de l’auto.
Oh! Ce prix? Un cabriolet Mustang GT de base commence à 54 460 $. Dans le cas de ma voiture d’essai, il faut lui ajouter l’ensemble 401 A (régulateur de vitesse automatique adaptatif, GPS, etc…) de 2200 $, l’ensemble décoratif California Special de 2500 $, les soupapes d’échappement actives de 1000 $, le chauffe-moteur d’hiver de 150 $, le pneu de secours de 200 $, la radio haut de gamme de 1000 $, la taxe fédérale du climatiseur de 100 $ et les frais de transport et préparation de 1800 $ (et quelques autres petites dépenses supplémentaires) et on en arrive à un total de 63 440 $ …plus taxes.
Oh! Et la consommation? Si l’ordinateur de bord avait calculé ma consommation moyenne de la semaine (50-50 autoroute-ville) à 14,1 l./100 km, mes calculs à la pompe ont plutôt été de 15,4 l./100 km. Ce qui vous semble énorme est quand même raisonnable pour une si grande sportive de plus de 450 chevaux, n’est-ce pas?
L’arrivée de la Mustang Mach E électrique risque de jeter un peu d’ombre sur les Mustang à moteur à combustion interne. Toutefois, je crois qu’il restera encore suffisamment de mordus de la voiture à moteur V8 pour que cette maintenant légendaire voiture survive encore une dizaine, que dis-je, une vingtaine d’années!
Maudit sauvage!
J’ai vu, de mes yeux vu, un conducteur de BMW X5 M faire marche arrière en manœuvre de stationnement sur la rue Jean-Talon le week-end dernier et non seulement s’appuyer sur le pare-chocs d’une (vénérable) Honda Civic mais même la pousser pour pouvoir se dégager et reprendre la route. Jusqu’ici, rien d’alarmant. Sauf que le «chic» monsieur avait une attache de remorque de type «heavy duty» à l’arrière de son X5 et que cet accessoire a laissé toute une marque sur le pare-chocs de la petite auto. J’ai frappé sur la carrosserie du X5 et le conducteur en est sorti. Je lui ai signalé qu’il avait fait des dommages sur la Civic. Il m’a répondu qu’il ne s’était aperçu de rien! (Faut-il croire que les X5 M, un véhicule neuf sûrement très «cheap» n’a pas de caméra de marche arrière…?). Je lui ai suggéré de laisser sa carte d’affaire dans le pare-brise de la Civic (il devait sûrement en avoir une) mais il a remonté dans sa voiture sans dire un mot et il est reparti (j’ai toujours son numéro de plaque). Coudon! À quoi sert notre technologie moderne payée si cher sur nos véhicules si l’on s’en fout! Ce n’était pas une Civic récente mais elle me semblait bien entretenue. Quelle déception de voir un propriétaire de voiture de luxe ne pas avoir plus de respect pour des gens moins fortuné! Je vous laisse le soin d’utiliser l’adjectif que vous voulez pour le «chauffeur» du BMW. J’ai le mien!
Un Explorer notable!

Vu dans un petit centre commercial de Laval, un VUS Ford Explorer «wrappé» pour imiter une vieille voiture toute rouillée! Son propriétaire, un tatoueur local, m’a dit qu’ainsi, il «avait moins peur de se le faire voler»! Original, n’est-ce pas?
Adieu Avalon et NSX!
Nouvelle de dernière heure, selon Automotive News, Toyota aurait l’intention d’arrêter la production de la grande berline Avalon durant les prochains mois. Ce modèle se rapprocherait trop des Camry les plus luxueuses (ce qui fait qu’il ne se vend plus!).
Toujours selon Automotive News, 2022 serait la dernière année de production de la superbe Acura NSX…
Et, finalement, pas de Salon de New York!
Enfin, les organisateurs du Salon international de l’auto de New York viennent d’annoncer que celui-ci, qui a été déplacé d’avril à la troisième semaine d’août, sera finalement annulé (blâmer le reprise de la Covid-19!). On ne s’attendait pas à de nombreux dévoilements mais il y avait au programme celui du nouveau coupé Z de Nissan, de la version 4xe de la Grand Cherokee, de la nouvelle Subaru WRX et de l’Elantra en version N…
