ShortBox Comics Member Interview: Val Wise

Throughout the month of October, the Cartoonist Cooperative will be sharing interviews with members of the Co-op who have a new comic available at the ShortBox Comics Fair 2024!

Today’s spotlight is Val Wise and their new comic for ShortBox, In Fair Verona.

We’d love it if you could introduce yourself and tell us about your background in comics.

Val Wise: I’m Val, I graduated from SCAD in 2018. I’ve illustrated a couple of YA graphic novels, and in the past few years I’ve started to become more confident with my own writing. This is my third year participating in the ShortBox Comics Fair.

Tell us more about your new comic?

VW: Here’s the blurb: Two girls enter the service of the Princess of All Blood. One is there to be loved, the other tormented, but strange circumstances have blurred the lines between the two.

In Fair Verona started with a script I wrote in August of 2023, but decided it might be too much to pitch anywhere. I came back to it a couple of months later and decided the fair would probably be the best place for it.

I didn’t have much intentional thought about themes or anything else while I was writing it, but I realized later on that it kind of perfectly encapsulates my struggles communicating with other people. But that’s all I’ll say there, lol.

Tell us about your creative process; how did you develop this comic and what are the steps you took to bring it to the final stage?

VW: The idea of wanting to do a possession story came first. I wanted to make a story about an “ugly” girl who possesses a “pretty” girl and then makes sure they can never switch back. But when I actually sat down to write it out, that idea very quickly changed.

After that, this comic appeared in my brain more fully formed than…anything I’ve ever made. I’ve never written anything that progressed so naturally with so few changes needed from my outline to the final product. A finger has curled on the monkey’s paw, because nothing I’ve tried to write since has come so easily!

Does a sense of audience, even if it’s just an audience of one, enter into your creative process? If yes, how so?

VW: I don’t really think about the audience while I’m writing. But, every step after, I think about it a lot! I have to spend so much time with all of the wild choices I made so quickly in a word document!

I get so in my head about my own decisions, and I have to force myself to not get bogged down in the worst ways my ideas can be interpreted. So, I do try my best not to think about the audience very much, though I do appreciate that people are often more generous than I give them credit for.

MORE VOLKSWAGEN BUG BUMBLEBEES

2018 Bumblebee spoiled me with the Volkswagen Beetle alt mode and now I need it for survival. It's just the best alt mode for him in my mind and I stand by that. Like yeah, the sports car alt mode is great, but the VW Bug? Top tier. Peak character design right there.

Even that rinky dinky little smart car alt mode he got in TFA was amazing. I simply believe that no matter what, he should be a ridiculously small car, as a treat. That way he can always catch his enemies off guard.

I also fully believe that despite him being a tiny little car, he should still be extremely fast. Purely for comedic purposes, and my personal satisfaction. Put that small car in places where it physically should not be.

Der Zettelkasten auf tumblr wurde einmal, und zwar im Januar 2022 auf Null gestellt (nur drei ältere Zettel wurden öffentlich gelassen) und von da an neu gefüllt, das zweite mal seit Januar 2018, dem Monat, in dem ich auf Einladung von Jens Kersten und Susanne Lüdemann am Institut for advanced studies in München während eines Projektes zum Gesetz und zum Revolutionsfilm damit begonnen hatte.

Einmal vier Jahre gefüllt, denn wurde die Füllung nahezu vollständig privatisiert, die Zettel sind jetzt alle in meinem privaten Zettelkasten. Und dann ab 2022 neu und wieder öffentlich gefüllt. Ehrlich gesagt wollte ich im Januar 2022 mit dem Projekt aufhören, aber jetzt bin ich doch froh, dass ich nochmal neu angesetzt habe. Neben dem Archiv der enttäuscten Erwartung ist das mein zweites großes digitales Projekt zu Rechtswissenschaft und sozialen Netzwerken, zum Schreiben und Bilden in Zeiten der sogenannten Digitalisierung. Das ist experimentell, dafür gibt es keine Förderung von der VW-Stiftung aber immerin von der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft - und auf jeden, der so ein projekt sinnlos findet kommt einer, der es sinnvoll findet. Auf jeden, der das im Publiktationsverzeichnis für nicht angemessen und der das für unwissenschaftich und unseriös hält, kommt einer, der es genau anders herum sieht.

An den Unis stehen Sie, das seit Ihr, in den Startlöchern: Die Leute, die nicht aus der Welt ihrer Professoren kommen und die nicht nur andere Bücher und Bilder, nicht nur ein anderes Recht im Kopf haben als die Herren Staatsrechtslehrer und Superkenner, sondern die unter dem Lesen und Schreiben, unter dem Urteilen, Richten, Verwalten, Vertragen und verfassen auch etwas völlig anderes verstehen als Ihre Lehrer und denen bald ohnehin die unvorhersehbare Zukunft gehört.

Inzwischen hat der öffentliche Teil meines Zettelkastens eine kritische Dichte erreicht, die mich selbst überrumpelt (und mir jeden morgen ordentlich Freude bereitet) - weil sie exakt das in Gang setzt, was ein Zettelkasten meiner Vorstellung nach tun soll. Ich verwende den Zettelkasten nicht systematisch, nicht als Akkumulation von Wissen, sondern als eine Maschine zur Entwendung und Windung von Wörtern und Bildern, wenn man so will: als Ventilator vergleichender Meteorologie. Manche Zeichen und Zettel wollen ja nicht irgendwohin geblasen werden, dann muss man eben nachhelfen. Stosslüftungsepistemologie wäre eine feine Sache.

On our last morning on the Shamwari Game Reserve we were not permitted a lie in. Oh no, still lots to do. So we had a half hour warning at 06.30 to present ourselves for breakfast and then Raymond was to take us to the Shamwari Rehabilitation Centre to see what they do with defective animals. Unlike Born Free, the object is to fix the problem and get the animals back out into the wild where they belong, and frankly we were amazed at the time and dedication they were prepared to put into saving animals. This is an impressive new facility built as recently as 2018 for the Shamwari Game Reserve and it is an integral part of the conservation work they do on site. We saw a white rhino orphaned at birth so had been hand reared, being fed milk till 18 months old, with the plan that it'll be released when 2 years old. Being a wild animal it butts the keeper rather badly when the milk run is ready to be performed. They needed a routine to pacify the animal first before delivering the white stuff and the method devised is to blindfold him and put earmuffs on first. Rhino needed companionship, and surprisingly this is provided by Frank the sheep! They didn't get on initially but now they are inseparable.

This team is remarkable. They have Patrick the giraffe, abandoned at birth and reared also by hand. I imagined a giraffe at birth might possibly be the size of a giant stick insect. Apparently a new born giraffe is a good 2 meters tall! Patrick is doing fine. A new avenue for the centre is vultures. They have recently received some 50 or so vultures who have been injured and are now in the process of recovery. Vultures are useful in cleaning up carcasses and preventing rats and blowflies which restricts the spread of disease. A major success story was the surgery performed on a severely injured white rhino left for dead after poachers cut his horn off and basically leaving a hole in its head! Rhino are still very much sought by poachers who can get $1M for a horn in the US which buys an awful lot of corrupt officials turning blind eyes!

Other inmates are elephants, jackals and meerkats. These are long-term projects and release to the wild takes time, ensuring that the animal will be able to cope on its own.

We took a wide loop back to the lodge on the lookout for any animals we might have missed, but it was like the apocalypse had come, there were none to see! So we settled up, paid a vast amount in tips, jumped back into the VW (now exceedingly clean after the staff had valeted it) and roared off down the dusty road replacing the dust removed with a bucketload of fresh dust and out towards the main gate heading for Port Elizabeth and our replacement hotel; The Hacklewood Hill Country House, built 1898 for Mr & Mrs Mattingly. Now a five star Victorian boutique hotel somewhat favoured by Trailfinders I think. This is home for the night although we shall have to abandon it tomorrow morning in favour of a very early flight to Johannesburg and then on to Kasane in Botswana where we shall be transferred to the Chobe Game Reserve.

ps What a fantastic experience this section of our trip has been. Shamwari has been great both for service and terrific food we have been provided and also for the insight into the animals and their habitat we have been voyeurs to. To be feet away from the majesty of lions, the power and size of elephants, the height, grace and elegance of giraffes is absolutely mind blowing. To see close up the endangered, hunted, but thankfully protected rhino is quite awe inspiring. It is easy to forget that these animals are entirely wild, would easily kill you, but are in their natural environment and are living the life they deserve. After the recent rains the vegetation is so lush and green and the animals are loving it.

pps We have begun our course of anti malarial tablets essential because of the risk in Botswana. We have been warned of side effects!

ppps Superb meal tonight at the hotel. Ostrich steak, really nice and eating out here is so cheap!!

The beauty of this VW-powered motorcycle is that the VW engine is a very reliable, very powerful low-revving engine with a lot of torque. Parts are cheap, it is low tech and easy to maintain. The majority of VW bikes utilize the BMW motorcycle as the basic frame to start with, particularly the 1960 to 1969 years. The fact that the BMW is an opposed engine, the VW is a natural for an engine swap. BMW opposed engine has a big flywheel with a single disk clutch that allows the VW to easily mate with the BMW transmission via a custom built bell-housing.

Californian Doug Whitson purchased the tooling and parts from early developer Rodger Willis and created a new company, calling his bike the Webley-Vickers. Now retired, Whitson created and sold complete motorcycles and kits, the last person to do so. However, he took things to a new level by performing the transmission modification via CAD/CAM versus jigs and creating a new, aluminum billet bellhousing with an electric starter. He also continued to make other parts for the conversion, such as the rear exhaust manifolds, generator mount, clutch button, improved clutch arm and oil-filled intake manifold. His story is documented on VBMW Motorcycles Facebook page.

Owner John Landstrom of Blue Moon Cycle bought this motorcycle from Whitson in 2018. It had been Whitson's personal bike since the 1970s and was the test mule for many of the innovations he developed while making his Webley-Vickers branded bikes. Whitson rode this bike from his California home to Sturgis many times. According to Whitson, it has a 2000cc motor, dual S&S carburetors and his own intake and exhaust manifolds, and he reworked the BMW gearbox for higher gear ratios and improved reliability. The modifications are too many to list. This motorcycle comes with a California Title, and it is titled as a Webley Vickers, with Whitson choosing his birth year, 1953, as the year. This hand-built custom motorcycle has an interesting history that goes back nearly 50 years, and as for VW-powered motorcycles, it is among the best. This is a rare opportunity to own one of the most unusual and high-performance touring motorcycles of the 1970s.

This is junkbots - an AU based on a toyline by hexbug and various other random properties.

Yes, the logo is taken from all junkbots packaging.

The AU itself focuses on comedy, action, speed and totally random universes!

Let's meet the characters now.

Jack static - he's the main protagonist, he's always ready to take down bad guy butt, even if that means he's always angry.

Arielle 51 is jack's best friend, a feisty and reckless bot who's antics usually causes her to get serious damage.

Boxstritch is an autistic worrier, who wears a box as a protective shell, depending on what he's wearing, he can get cool powers based on what it's used for.

Sage is the wisest of all the heroes in the AU, he knows everything about junk, and he means it.

Badcomputer is the main antagonist of junkbots, his main goal is to become the dominant computer in the galaxy, all he wants is control, and he will get it at any cost.

If you're familiar with the transformers franchise, these next guys are for you, Bumblebee is the same version of him from Bumblebee (2018), in the AU, he stays with Charlie and keeps his VW beetle mode, his personality is the same as that film.

Keeping up with the Bumblebee movie train, Charlie is the same character as before, but Bumblebee stays with her.

The same is also said for Memo, who in the AU hasn't gotten in a romantic relationship with Charlie just yet.

This one's even weirder, mirage from the upcoming movie Transformers rise of the beasts is a main cast member, he rocks a porche mode and is ready to be the most hip fella of the team.

One of the best things about electric cars in 2023 is that we are now seeing 1st generation models from the “early years” being improved, revised and facelifted. For the early-adopters in the UK’s EV market, we are grateful for those consumers and businesses for having the foresight and courage to invest into all-electric technology in 2018 / 2019 / 2020, when little was known on how good this form of transport would be (and when public charging infrastructure was still in its early inception). And VW’s electric Golf replacement, the ID.3, was first shown to the world in 2016 before being pushed into production in 2019 with deliveries taking place around 2020 around Europe (including the UK). As one would expect, the ID3 was fairly popular, amassing some 11,032 registrations in 2021 (it was the 3rd best-selling EV in the UK) followed by becoming the 4th best-selling UK EV with 9,178 registrations in 2022! Launching with a Pure battery (45 kWh), Pro battery (58 kWh) and Pro S configuration (77 kWh), VW’s all-electric hatchback filled a necessary hole in the UK’s automotive market, which was historically dominated by SUVs and luxury / prestige options. Winning awards, like the Which? Best Buy of 2023 (https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/new-and-used-cars/volkswagen-id-3-2020), does prove that this is very much the zero-emission Golf equivalent.   

 But the “future of driving” is not a completed model and the German group have now confirmed a series of external, integral and technological improvements to this popular EV (see VW - https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/electric-and-hybrid/electric-cars/the-new-id3.html). As the “evolution of electric mobility” continues, the brand have confirmed some truly existing updates including:

  Exterior - new colours such as Dark Olivine Green,     sharper profile at the front together with new tail light clusters and     dynamic turn signals plus IQ.Light LED matrix headlights set to be     offered. New alloy options including the 19” Wellington and 20” Sanya     alloys, a new Exterior Package will allow drivers to add LED matrix     headlights with automatic lighting control, LED tail lights, illuminated     strip between headlights and tinted rear windows. An Exterior Packages     PLUS includes a panoramic roof and sun blind;   

  Interior - increased options on the dash and door trim,     together with higher quality finish. Ability to upgrade to the optional     electric seats with massage function and high-quality fabric. New     panoramic glass roof with “heavenly views” and sunblind; and

   Technology and safety - 8-colour ambient lighting,     Travel Assist with adaptive lane guidance and predictive cruise control,     Emergency Assist, Area View with 4 cameras, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane     Keeping Assist and Park Assist Plus can all be added to your new ID3.       

 Not unlike many other brands, the ID.3 will be utilising over-the-air updates for continual improvements coupled with the We Connect ID app for synergising your vehicle to your mobile device. Many EV customers enjoy the facility to start and stop charging, or warm their vehicle, from the comfort of the app.
