Last year, Cheniere Energy Inc. reported paying Hart’s firm $80,000. Hart’s firm specifically lobbied on “issues related to the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG), approval of LNG exports and export facilities.” The firm also lists on its website that it lobbies on other EPA policies like the Clean Air Act. The EPA did not respond to ABC News' questions about whether Hart's lobbying firm had any involvement in arranging meetings during Pruitt's trip to Morocco. Subaru Ascent, Ford et VW et le Salon du Hobby

Le 6 novembre 2018

Enfin, le Subaru Tribeca est remplacé. Il laisse sa place au tout nouvel Ascent (attention, ne pas confondre avec Accent), un vrai VUS (ou VUM, c’est selon) à sept, voire huit passagers. Vu d’abord dans les grands salons de l’automobile l’année dernière, l’Ascent ressemble vraiment à la gamme Subaru ce qui lui a valu déjà certaines remarques négatives du genre : «un Outback sur stéroïdes» et autres mentions du genre. Mais il n’en est rien.

En ce qui a trait au design, tout est une question de goût. Toutefois, regardez-y bien à deux fois. Même si, je le répète, l’Ascent arbore des airs de ressemblance avec d’autres membres de la famille Subaru, il a un look bien à lui qui, heureusement, n’a rien à voir avec les Tribeca du passé! En fait, l’Ascent ressemble plus à un croisement de VUS et de fourgonnette. Et, non, vous n’avez pas rêvé, il est gros! Presque 197 pouces (environ 500 cm) de long, il pèse dans les 4500 livres. On voit donc que Subaru s’attaque sérieusement à un des plus importants segments du marché, celui des VUS intermédiaires incluant les Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-9, Toyota Highlander et Chevrolet Traverse de ce monde.

Avant de parler de ses éléments mécaniques et techniques, jetons un coup d’œil à l’intérieur. Le tableau de bord semble divisé en compartiments. D’abord, l’instrumentation est bien placée devant le conducteur et entre les deux grands cadrans se trouve un centre d’information combiné au système EyeSight (dont les caméras sont placées autour du rétroviseur intérieur) qui avertira le chauffeur de toute manœuvre ou situation qui pourrait être dangereuse. Il y a aussi quelques commandes du tableau de bord qui sont dédoublées aux branches du volant de la voiture. Mais celui-ci ne semble pas surchargé. Au centre du tableau de bord se trouve l’inévitable écran qui sert à la radio, la navigation et la caméra de marche arrière. Son image est claire alors que le système de navigation (qui demande un peu d’acclimatation) devient facile à opérer avec l’usage. Sur le dessus de la planche de bord se trouve une autre petite niche. Celle-ci donne des informations sur l’auto au conducteur incluant la consommation, la boussole et ainsi de suite. La console centrale n’est pas trop large mais on y trouve un levier de vitesses traditionnel et les deux porte-gobelets. En ce qui a trait aux sièges ajustables à l’avant, ils sont larges et accueillants sans mentionner qu’ils sont aussi confortables. Les passagers du centre (qui peut inclure deux sièges capitaine ou une banquette à trois places) seront également bien à l’aise avec beaucoup d’espace pour les jambes grâce à des sièges qui s’ajustent d’avant ou d’arrière. Curieusement, la banquette de la troisième rangée (à trois places!) m’est apparue beaucoup plus confortable que celle de bien des concurrents. Et on y accède quand même facilement. Ce n’est pas aussi confortable qu’à l’avant mais c’est mieux que je le pensais. Toutefois, si les dossiers sont en place, il ne reste plus beaucoup d’espace de rangement. Vous aurez compris alors que lorsqu’on les rabat, on obtient un sérieux compartiment cargo. Il faut s’asseoir dans l’Ascent pour y découvrir les nombreuses petites attentions apportées aux détails.

Sous la voiture

Ce que l’on ne voit pas, c’est toute cette mécanique cachée sous la voiture. Évidemment, le nouvel Ascent repose sur la toute récente Plateforme Globale déjà utilisée sous les Impreza et Crosstrek. Et le moteur est tout nouveau. Il s’agit d’un quatre cylindres à plat turbocompressé de 2,4 litres de 260 chevaux et 277 li-pi de couple. Et c’est le seul moteur disponible dans cette grande caisse, le six à plat ne faisant pas partie des options au catalogue! La seule boîte disponible est une automatique à variation continue qui est combinée à une traction intégrale ou, si vous aimez mieux, à quatre roues motrices dont une partie légèrement supérieure du couple passe par les roues avant alors que les roues arrière peuvent se voir confier plus de motricité si celles d’avant se mettent à patiner. Mais elles ont toujours leur part du rôle à jouer.

Sur la route

Dès que l’on se glisse derrière le volant, on se rend compte que l’Ascent est un gros véhicule. Mais il n’est pas énorme et inconduisible. Lorsqu’on lance le moteur, on sent une petite vibration typique aux moteurs à plat de Subaru. Toutefois, celle-ci disparaît rapidement et on ne sent plus de vibration. En fait, c’est le moteur le plus silencieux et le plus doux que je n’ai jamais testé de Subaru. Et il est bien à la hauteur de la situation malgré le poids imposant du véhicule. Passer du point mort à 100 km/H demande moins de huit secondes ce à quoi participe la boîte automatique continuellement variable (CVT) qui est aussi discrète, sinon plus, que le moteur. En vérité, on l’oublie presque toujours tant elle est transparente. Et elle peut se manier comme une manuelle ! Mentionnons ici que l’Ascent a une capacité de remorquage maximale de 5000 livres! En ce qui a trait à sa tenue de route, disons qu’elle est respectable pour un véhicule de ce gabarit. Oui, la direction est un peu tendre mais le freinage m’a paru adéquat. Notons que la voiture était équipée d’origine de pneus Falken d’origine japonaise (c’est un dérivé de Sumitomo). Sans être un véhicule de sport, l’Ascent procure des performances plus qu’acceptables. Incidemment, pour ceux qui voudront s’aventurer hors des sentiers battus, ce Subaru possède la motricité aux quatre roues X-Mode qui aide à cet exercice mais je crois que peu de propriétaire s’aventureront dans des sentiers difficiles quoique ce sont possible…jusqu’à un certain point.

Ma semaine passée au volant de ce véhicule s’est soldée par une consommation d’essence (régulière) d’une moyenne de 13,4 l./100 km (alors que l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 12,6 à l’affichage numérique) ce qui est dans la bonne moyenne pour un véhicule de ce gabarit dont le prix de base, dans sa version Limited dont il est question ici est de 48 220 $ (46 495 $ plus les 1725 $ de frais de transport). Il en existe une version de base Commodité et une version Tourisme intermédiaire en plus d’une version haut de gamme Premier dont les prix varieront.

Donc, Subaru propose enfin un véhicule capable de répondre aux amateurs de la marque qui attendaient avec impatience un VUS plus grand que leur Outback adulée. Il devrait vraiment s’imposer dans son créneau…mais j’aurais bien aimé y voir le six cylindres!

Que se passe-t-il entre Ford et VW ?

Le week-end dernier, j’ai rencontré un jeune amateur de voitures qui ne jurait que par Volkswagen. Il ne voulait rien savoir des «Américaines» comme si ces véhicules représentaient une plaie dans l’industrie. Pourtant…Mais enfin, je ne veux pas repartir cette discussion. Sauf que ce jeune homme devra faire face à une réalité. Il semble que de plus en plus de liens se tissent entre les compagnies européennes et autres (prenez Fiat et Chrysler, par exemple ou Toyota et BMW dans le cas de la Supra) et la dernière nouvelle, c’est une entente possible entre Volkswagen et Ford au niveau de la recherche afin de développer des véhicules autonomes et électriques. Quant à Ford, le géant américain pourrait fournir des plateformes de pick-up et des moteurs à Volks.

Mais il y aurait un perdant si cette entente se concrétisait. Ce serait Audi dont les récents scandales ont affaibli l’administration au moment même où VW pourrait profiter des avantages technologiques de son confrère au sein de l’organisation. Tout semble indiquer que les efforts d’Audi pour créer une voiture autonome se soient soldés par une faiblesse face à ses concurrents.

Hubert Diess, le président du groupe Volkswagen craint que l’industrie automobile allemande perde de ses avantages technologiques si elle n’effectue pas des changements radicaux. Il estime à 50% les chances que cette industrie soit parmi les élites mondiales au cours des 10 prochaines années.

Créer des autos électriques représente des dépenses astronomiques que peu de consommateurs ne pourraient comprendre et surtout ne pourraient se permettre à l’achat si les constructeurs ne trouvent pas de partenaires ou d’économie d’échelle pour les rendre plus abordables. Dans le passé, j’ai su que développer une nouvelle plateforme d’auto courante exigerait un budget dépassant les quatre et cinq MILLIARDS de dollars (et cela, c’était durant les années quatre-vingt dix). Je n’ose jamais le répéter car plusieurs gens, même des connaisseurs de l’industrie automobile, ne me croient pas. C’est pourtant la triste vérité. Pourquoi croyez-vous que des Ford et GM de ce monde s’unissent pour concevoir de nouvelles boîtes automatiques? C’est pourtant ce que les deux «concurrents» ont dû faire pour partager des frais qui dépassent notre imagination…

Le Salon du Hobby.

Chaque automne et chaque printemps, je me rends au Salon du Hobby (anciennement Expo-Train) qui se tient à l’école Vanier de Duvernay pour essayer de me trouver quelques modèles réduits usagés (ou neuf) pour ma collection. Toutefois, certains amis ne sont pas contents de ne pas avoir été avertis plus tôt ayant pris des engagements qui les ont empêché de s’y rendre. Every Fall the Washington Automotive Press Association (WAPA) rounds up a fleet of new cars, trucks & SUVs for us to test drive back to back. Sometimes it’s the first opportunity to drive a brand new vehicle and sometimes it gives us a chance to get a second opinion of a car we drove a few months ago.

This year the WAPA Rally was held at Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia. Below is an overview of some of the cars I had an opportunity to drive.

2018 Audi S5 Sportback

It’s typical Audi. Very easy to drive, probably the best initial driving experience of any car, and a wonderfully tech-happy interior. I particularly like the Sportback because I’m a true fan of hatchbacks for their versatility.

2018 Ford Expedition Platinum

2018 KIA Stinger GT

These Are the Victims Identified in the Limo Crash in Schoharie, New York

A group of friends and family members heading to a birthday party were killed along with the driver of the limo they were riding in and two bystanders when the stretch SUV careened down a hill and into the parking lot of a popular country store in upstate New York, police and relatives say. New York State Police said 20 people were killed, including 18 in the limo, in the crash Saturday afternoon at Apple Barrel Country Store in Schoharie.

“The investigation at the scene revealed that a 2001 Ford Excursion limousine was traveling in a southwestern direction on State Route 30 and failed to stop at the intersection with State Route 30A,” the state police said Sunday in a press release. “The limousine traveled across the intersection into a parking lot and struck a 2015 Toyota Highlander which was unoccupied and parked. That Highlander then struck and killed two pedestrians standing nearby.”

The investigation into the crash, which happened about 1:55 p.m., is ongoing. It is being led by the state police, along with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). A cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The cause of the crash is not yet known. Albany Times Union Reporter Paul Nelson tweeted, “Authorities probing if limo’s brakes may have malfunctioned.” According to the Times Union, the intersection where the crash occurred is known to be dangerous.

The NTSB said the crash is the deadliest transportation accident in the United States since 2009. “Twenty fatalities is just horrific,” NTSB chairman Robert Sumwalt told reporters “I’ve been on the board for 12 years, and this is one of the biggest losses of life that we’ve seen in a long, long time.” You can read more about the crash here.

Police have not yet released the names of the victims, but family members have started to identify them in local news outlets and on social media. The driver of the limo has been identified by his brother as Scott Lisinicchia. The other victims include four sisters, along with the husbands of three of the sisters and the brother of one of the husbands. One of the sisters was recently married and the birthday party was a surprise for her husband. Another newlywed couple was also killed in the crash.

According to family members, the victims identified so far include Amy King Steenburg and Axel Steenburg; Rich Steenburg; Mary King Dyson and Robert Dyson; Allison King; Abby King Jackson and Adam Jackson; Erin Vertuccci McGowan and Shane McGowan; Matthew Coons; Savannah Devonne; and Patrick Cushing. The victims identified so far range in age from to 30 to 35 and grew up together in the Amsterdam, New York, area.

The group was celebrating Amy Steenburg’s 30th birthday. Abby and Axel were married on June 30, and several of the victims were in the wedding party, including Abby’s three sisters: Amy, Mary and Allison, who was the maid of honor. Axel’s brother, Rich, was his best man. Matthew Coons was a groomsman. He was killed Saturday along with his girlfriend, Savannah Devonne. Erin Vertucci McGowan and Shane McGowan were also recently married, on June 8. Erin McGowan’s cousin, Patrick Cushing, was among the victims killed in the crash Sunday.

Amy King Steenburg, 30, was celebrating her birthday with her husband, Axel Steenburg, and other family and friends, her aunt, Barbara Douglas, told The New York Post. Amy and Axel had recently been married after dating since 2015, according to their wedding website.

The couple lived together in Amsterdam. Amy Steenburg was a nurse and Axel Steenburg worked at GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor manufacturing company, as a senior technology and development tech, according to his Facebook page. On October 3, Amy posted on Facebook about her husband, writing along with a photo of the two of them together, “I just wanted to say Axel Steenburg I love you more than words can say! You are such an amazing man and entertain all my crazy ideas. Even when I move a couch just to move it back to the original place. Thank you for being so kind and loving xo #justbecause #husband.”

Amy Dunlop-Johnson, Axel Steenburg’s cousin, told CBS News the group had been touring wineries in the area to celebrate Axel’s birthday. It was initially reported that the limo had been carrying members of a wedding party.

Rich Steenburg, 34, was celebrating his brother’s birthday when he was killed. Like his brother, Rich Steenburg worked at GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor manufacturing company. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the Steenburg family. He is survived by his wife, 10-year-old daughter and 14-year-old stepson. Rich’s wife, Kim Steenburg, was not at the party Saturday because she wasn’t feeling well, a friend wrote on Facebook.

“Saturday, Rich, Axel and other friends and family passed in an unfortunate party bus accident. It is beyond devastating for everyone who knew them all. Please help ease the burden during this time and help donate to funeral expenses,” the crowdfunding campaign’s creator wrote.

Subaru Ascent marketing stresses third row

Consumers will be forgiven for thinking “three-row” is officially part of the 2019 Subaru Ascent’s name.

Subaru of America intends to say that phrase over and over (and over) again as it markets the new Ascent.

Whether it’s a minute-long TV commercial or a 6-second online ad, the phrase “the all-new three-row Subaru Ascent” is uttered in each spot — just in case a shopper missed the point.

Bethke: Building awareness

“We wanted to be very clear in our communications not only what the name of this vehicle is, but that it’s a three-row vehicle,” said Alan Bethke, Subaru of America’s senior vice president of marketing. The Ascent marketing campaign launched last week.

“You’ll see ‘three-row’ very close to the word ‘Ascent’ in a lot of marketing communications, and that’s not by accident.”

The Ascent, which went on sale in June, marked Subaru’s return to the hotly contested three-row cross-over segment. The brand’s last entry in the segment was the Tribeca, which ended production in 2014.

The Ascent will be fighting in a segment dominated by the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander and Chevrolet Traverse. The Ascent has been eagerly awaited by Subaru retailers as a way to move existing Subaru owners into a larger crossover instead of losing them to bigger competitors.

“We’re coming out with a new model, with an all-new name that people weren’t familiar with, in a segment where everyone’s established and where we’ve been absent for a long time,” Bethke told Automotive News. “And the last time we were there, we weren’t overly successful.

“We’ve been doing very well in this market, but we’re still going up against Toyotas, Hondas, Fords, Chevys and everybody else in the segment,” he said. “Building awareness of the name and of the fact that Subaru has a vehicle this large, and in this segment — that really is job No. 1.”

Subaru believes it now has a nameplate suitable for moving families up to a larger product, and that is reflected in the amount of family-friendly selling points highlighted in the campaign.

2019 Subaru Ascent

This includes focusing on second-row captain’s chairs and the vehicle’s standard EyeSight safety system. Captain’s chairs are available on all trims except the base model.

“A lot of competitors don’t have captain’s chairs at all, and if they do, they might only be on the upper-end models,” he said. “For families, that’s a great option.”

Subaru made the Ascent’s marketing message consistent across advertising media.

“You’ll notice kids in the third row. You’ll notice a car full of people,” Bethke said. “You’ll notice the same things in some of the short form content: usability of the third row, usability of the captain’s chairs and the features that are important in a family vehicle, like Wi-Fi and 19 cupholders.”

Subaru has sold 10,721 Ascents through August in the U.S. Last month was Subaru’s best U.S. sales month to date and the brand expects to post its 10th consecutive year of record U.S. sales in 2018.

Working with longtime ad partner Carmichael Lynch for the commercials, Subaru stuck with a marketing plan focused on an emotional pull for the vehicle, incorporating the new crossover into Subaru’s ongoing “Love” campaign. The TV commercials now end with the line “Love is now bigger than ever.”

“We wanted to connect it to the brand,” Bethke said. “Using the word “love” in the Ascent’s campaign was a way of connecting an unknown model to the Subaru brand. What makes this one different? It’s bigger.”
