The 2019 Kia K900 Excels as a Classic Luxury Flagship
The Kia K900 debuted for the 2015 model year as a genuine competitor to established full-size luxury sedans like the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Or, at least, that was the plan.
Despite an impressive spec sheet, Kia’s big cruiser failed to gain real traction in the luxury segment. With a total redesign for 2019, Kia is giving the K900 another go. To start, the V8 has been replaced by a more modern twin-turbo V6. The infotainment system pairs a euro-style rotary controller with a touch-sensitive screen. And all-wheel drive now comes on every K900. This all qualifies as what the auto industry likes to call “a good start.”
To see if the new K900 is truly a luxury competitor, we slogged through nearly an hour of Boston traffic before enjoying nearly 200 uninterrupted miles of highway on our way to Burlington, Vermont. After all, what better way to gauge a full-size luxury sedan than a road trip?
This Sure Doesn’t Feel Like a Kia
The first thing you’ll notice when entering the K900 is how it doesn’t feel like a run-of-the-mill Kia. Brown Nappa leather covers nearly every inch of the cabin, and the 20-way adjustable driver seat means anyone behind the wheel will be able to find a comfortable position. The backseat, in particular, fills the primary requirement of a luxury sedan: Sitting in the second row will make you feel like the most important person in the car, not like you’ve been relegated there because the front seat was taken.
The K900 feels smaller than it is, too. Don’t be surprised if passengers suggest it’s a midsize sedan, rather than a full-size. With the help of Kia’s surround-view camera, it’s as easy to park and maneuver as a smaller car, too.
That said, the second thing you’re likely to notice is the K900’s rapidly dropping fuel-gauge needle. Driving through traffic, the K900 was quiet and powerful, although surprisingly different than a Kia Stinger or Genesis G70, both of which use the K900’s engine. Rather than sprinting from stoplights like those two sports-oriented machines, the K900 swept us away with very little drama. All of that sweeping, however, takes a toll on fuel economy. Even with two fewer cylinders than the previous-generation K900, don’t expect this one to be a gas sipper.
Granted, things got better once we hit the highway. Silence is possibly the K900’s most noteworthy attribute. Smooth power delivery and a peaceful ride are requirements of any luxury car, and the K900 offers both. Combined with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, I finished a 3.5-hour drive to Lake Champlain astonishingly refreshed. Something as abstract as “quiet” is tough to notice when driving, but once you do, you’ll continually appreciate it. By keeping me alert and refreshed, the lack of droning road noise is practically a safety feature.
Safety Comes Standard
On the topic of safety, cameras and sensors are almost compulsory in a sedan as big as the K900. Kia’s suite of advanced safety features does make driving much easier, and the unique blind-spot cameras are particularly helpful. When the driver hits a turn signal, the K900’s instrument panel will replace either the left or right gauge with a digital video feed from a camera mounted under the corresponding wing mirror. The picture is predictably grainy during night-time driving, but still provides a clearer view of the K900’s blind spots than its wing mirrors do.
A Good Value… Today
Unfortunately, the K900’s appointments, performance, and safety can’t help it clear its current hurdle. Nor can the car’s 12.3-inch touchscreen or 17-speaker Lexicon sound system, as impressive as they are. On the surface, the K900 appears to be a great deal. Its sub-$65,000 price certainly makes it a financially pragmatic approach to luxury; this car offers 90% of what you can get from a BMW 7 Series at 70% of the price.
But developing a car takes a long time—years, at least. So, when Kia was designing the K900 for a 2015 model-year launch, a big V8 engine and rear-wheel drive fit the bill. But Kia quickly found itself behind the times with that formula, as shoppers showed greater interest in fuel economy and all-wheel drive. The resale values of those early K900s support this; take a look around, and you’ll find plenty of low-mileage first-generation cars priced well below $30,000.
Similarly, the 2019 Kia K900 has been developed to suit those 2018 desires, but the world of luxury is now pivoting hard toward hybrid and all-electric powertrains. As a result, the Porsche Taycan and Tesla’s Model S, Model X, and Model 3 look like the future of luxury, and even the more conventional 7 Series now offers a hybrid variant. Today, the K900 looks and feels amazing. But I can’t help but wonder if, tomorrow, it will have aged the way many older full-size sedans have: classically cool at best, outmoded and inefficient at worst.

Toyota signals a broader truck push
CHICAGO — Toyota’s broader light-truck strategy came into sharper focus at last week’s Chicago Auto Show. While the refreshed Tacoma and new trim levels for the Sequoia, RAV4 and Land Cruiser certainly will play a part, the automaker’s actions across its light-truck lineup can be summed up by a single word:
More.
More Tundras from its pickup plant in San Antonio because another plant can now make more Tacomas, allowing for broader variations and greater improvements in the refreshed 2020 versions.
Toyota also is adding variants, including the 2020 Sequoia TRD Pro, which aims to boost the off-road chops of one of the brand’s beefiest SUVs. The upcoming 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road finally gives some legitimate off-road bona fides to one of the vehicles that first embodied the phrase “soft-roader” two decades ago, aiming to give even more consumer appeal to what is already the nation’s top-selling crossover. And the Japanese automaker will offer more high-end nostalgia in its light-truck lineup in the form of a limited-run, specially badged 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition.
It’s all part of a strategy to strike the light-truck market while it continues to be hot, and doing so — because Toyota has the resources and discipline to pursue more than one global strategy at a time — while continuing to invest in its historically strong position in compact and midsize sedans.
In 2018, sales of Toyota-brand light trucks — its two pickups, as well as its SUVs and crossovers — in the U.S. rose 8.9 percent to 1.33 million units, making up 62 percent of the brand’s overall sales. Five light-truck nameplates had more than 100,000 sales for the year, and all had sales increases:
RAV4, up 4.8 percent to 427,170
Tacoma, up 24 percent to 245,659
Highlander, up 13 percent to 244,511
4Runner, up 8.9 percent to 139,694
Tundra, up 1.7 percent to 118,258.
Yet Toyota’s top executives still see more opportunity for sales gains. Take pickups, for example, where previous production limitations have placed a governor on sales of both the Tacoma and Tundra. Toyota addressed the problem by building a third Tacoma plant, now ramping up in Mexico.
“That will give us some growth opportunities and give us the ability to push Tacoma a little harder,” said Bill Fay, senior vice president for operations at Toyota Motor North America. “I think that will add a little more appeal, with more shoppers and more interest in the midsize pickup.”
And that, Fay said, will allow the San Antonio plant to throttle back on the Tacoma to instead focus on the larger Tundra pickup. “It gives us a chance to push Tundra a little harder,” he said. “In the past, if we did that, we had to take it out of Tacoma, and now, we don’t have to do that.”
Key to Toyota’s light-truck push is the lift it gets from its TRD performance subbrand. More than 40 percent of combined Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and 4Runner sales are TRD packages, said Jack Hollis, head of the Toyota Division for Toyota Motor North America.
“On the truck side, our TRD Pro has really been stuff that we’ve been working on over the years that we’ve … continuously improved over the years to make those products better,” Hollis said. “Having a performance brand really allows us to experiment and innovate, and that’s what I get excited about, whether it’s cars or trucks. I see it lifting our brand through performance.”

Alot of user are looking for 2018 subaru outback 36 r touring. Do you want to know about 2018 subaru outback cargo. Unless you truly require three columns of seats, the 2018 Subaru Outback is the sensible SUV elective. At the point when is a hybrid not a hybrid? At the point when it's known as the 2018 Subaru Outback, that is when. It's a tall-riding wagon with rough terrain hacks, however it avoids the square shaped look for an adjusted shape. It's as yet agreeable, extensive and skilled. The 2018 Outback’s 7.8 general score is an impression of its capacity to handle any errand with aplombâ€"and some especially well. This year, the Outback has reconsidered styling outside, new wheel outlines, a refreshed infotainment framework with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and heap changes intended to decrease wind, street, and motor thunder. Everything indicates a slight change of an effectively great vehicle.Four Outback trims are availableâ€"base, Premium, Limited, and Touring. A 2.5-liter inline-4 is standard, while a smoother, all the more intense, and thirstier 3.6-liter level 6 is discretionary on Limited and Touring trims. All Outbacks come standard with a persistently factor programmed transmission, all-wheel drive, and an amazing 8.7 creeps of ground freedom. They’re not genuine 4x4 junkies, but rather these tall wagons can scrabble up more difficult deterrents than anything shy of a Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota 4Runner. Regardless of that capacity, the Outback’s street behavior are more likened to an extravagance vehicle. The base 4-barrel that powers by far most of Outbacks can feel somewhat blunt, however it’s sufficiently intense and returns 32 mpg on the parkway. The discretionary 6-barrel conveys better speeding up, particularly with a full heap of travelers and freight, yet it doesn’t change the Outback into a rocket and its mileage hit might be difficult to legitimize for a few customers. All adaptations brag fresh dealing with and a created ride notwithstanding when smooth asphalt transforms into an uneven trail. 2018 subaru outback never too early actress probably is one of fascinating story to be discussed. The maker are so happy to present you this video about honda crv vs toyota rav4. Do you wondering about 2013 toyota rav4. At first, we also wondering about 2019 toyota rav4. Proly, you are one of many user that in the need for vids about toyota rav4 2008. 2018 toyota rav4 limited is very nice to be discussed. The Toyota RAV4 finished 2017 as America's fourth smash hit vehicle, in front of the Nissan Rogue and directly behind pickup trucks from Detroit's Big Three. Toyota needs to keep the force passing by presenting the all-new 2019 RAV4 at the up and coming New York Auto Show. Right-sized and stacked with helpful tech includes, the family-accommodating RAV4 has experienced four ages since the first model made its American presentation in 1995. To include setting, the current RAV4 went at a bargain in 2012, and Toyota refreshed it in 2015. We expect the firm won't stray too a long way from the equation that has made the nameplate a win for more than two decades. The lord of reduced hybrids will keep on offering quality and true serenity most importantly; don't anticipate that it will all of a sudden place a colossal spotlight on rough terrain ability, extravagance, or execution. The 2019 RAV4 goes up against a more customary SUV look than its antecedent, with rakish lines, a glaring grille, and different components apparently cribbed from the Toyota 4Runner and the current FT-AC idea. Under the skin, the RAV4 rides on a similar Toyota New Global Architecture stage as the Camry and Prius. The standard 2019 RAV4 motor is a 2.5-liter four-barrel mated to an eight-speed programmed transmission. That motor is combined with Toyota's well-known cross breed framework in the returning RAV4 Hybrid model. Toyota rav4 review is very interesting to be discussed. CHICAGO, Illinois – Big news out of the nation’s biggest auto show, counting public days, was actor Jim Belushi bantering with Ford Motor Company’s sales, U.S. marketing and service vice president Mark LaNeve over the 2019 Ford Transit Connect Wagon’s mid-cycle refresh.
In their presentation, Ford appeared to have discovered, or at least rediscovered, Baby Boomers and their buying power, while the charming character actor who recently played a casino boss in Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” complained that the passenger van doesn’t come with a cigarette lighter.
We have our own complaints, of course, though with this show so light on news we find ourselves in the unusual position of having far more hits than misses …
HIT: 2018 Nissan 370Zki
I love how stupid this thing is and I’m jealous that Lassa got to play Rockford with it outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. If you haven’t seen it yet, Nissan made a snowmobile out of its aging sports car by adding skis and some Dominator tracks and it looks pretty rad. Chicago got a good dusting of snow last night—I wonder if Nissan will let me take it for a spin outside of McCormick Place?
—Ed Tahaney
SUVs and trucks on ski tracks are nothing new, but this is the first time I can recall seeing skis on a sports car. Well played, Nissan. In the unlikely event this thing makes it to production, I’m moving to Detroit.
– Aaron Gold
HIT: Toyota Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner TRD Pro models
I can’t say whether these offroad TRD Pros will ever pose a threat to trail rated Jeeps, but they surely look the part, and by the way Toyota Group vice president Jack Hollis talked them up, the Fox internal bypass shocks installed on each must make for some serious offroading. The black safari-style rooftop carrier on the 4Runner TRD Pro stands out. These trucks and the 86 sports car are the enthusiast counterpoints that make appliances like the RAV4, Camry and Corolla forgivable.
—Todd Lassa
MISS: Toyotaspeak
Over several auto shows now, Hollis has referred to Toyota buyers as the brand’s “guests,” as if Toyota was operating a hotel chain instead of selling cars and trucks. They’re not “guests,” unless Toyota offers a car-sharing service, and even then the term is an annoying relic of early ‘00s corporate-speak, as in “Toyota associates sell many Camrys to Toyota’s guests.” Hollis also pointed out the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro’s new “desert-air intake” in his presentation. Serious off-roaders that Hollis wants to attract would call it a “snorkel.” —T.L.
REVELATION: Nissan’s Souvenir
The tchotchke that Nissan was handing out at the show? Turns out it’s a hand warmer, not a breast implant.
– A.G.
HIT: Volkswagen Arteon
A super subtle sedan that looks upscale just enough to help it stand apart from the rest of the pack. It’s got a sleek look, clean cabin, fastback feel, and comes with a six-year limited warranty. Its 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine offers 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Will SUV-obsessed Americans buy it when it finally goes on sale in the U.S. later this year? We’ll keep our fingers crossed.
—E.T.
In my opinion, this was the star of the show. The Arteon is a handsome car at first glance, and the longer you look at it, the more the details show themselves and the better it looks. My favorite view is from the side: There’s something of the first-gen “Bauhaus” Audi TT in the Arteon’s profile. Read the specs you’ll see that the Arteon’s luxury creds are, well, credible. This is a legitimate luxury car to which people will aspire. Almost makes one wonder what could have happened to the Phaeton had Volkswagen approached it a bit differently.
– A.G.
HIT: Subaru 50th Anniversary Lineup
It’s not as exciting as the Ascent reveal in L.A. and this could have gone seriously wrong with an all-black or midnight edition trim—but the Heritage Blue paint on the eight models works for me—especially on the BRZ and WRXes. Are these badges, special doodads, and blue paint going to add any value to your car? Probably not, but this is a must for diehard Subie fans.
—E.T.
REVELATION: Subaru is not so much into autonomy or ride-sharing
At the Midwest Auto Media Association’s Thursday morning keynote breakfast, Subaru of America president and chief operating officer Thomas Doll predicted that electric vehicles will catch on and quickly replace the internal combustion engine when costs come down, ranges go up and recharging becomes quicker and more accessible, though he doesn’t think the world is ready for Level IV or V autonomy or a switch to car-sharing services. “There’s a question of the secondary market for ride share cars,” he said, predicting ride sharing will grow only in large, congested cities like Manhattan, and maybe not even Chicago.
—T.L.
MISS: 2018 Lifted Nissan Titan HD Concept
Man, that truck is ugly and as silly looking as all those “Star Wars” inspired vehicle tie-ins. I hope this doesn’t blow my chances at driving the 370Zki—but then again there’s always the GMC Sierra 2500HD All Terrain X to commandeer.
—E.T.
HIT: Nissan…
…for creating a gigantic walk-in snow globe. For three minutes every fifteen, a section of the Nissan stand is deluged in snow (actually biodegradable bubbles, so there’s no mess). When it came to auto shows, I thought I’d seen it all, but making it snow indoors is a new one. That said, I’m from Los Angeles, and snow is a novelty. Chicago locals probably won’t be as impressed, especially the ones who went to the auto show specifically to get away from the snow.
– A.G.
MISS: Chicago Blackhawks Custom Camaro Convertible
Sorry Chicago—you couldn’t give this car away. Oh, wait—my bad. Chevrolet is giving it away to some unlucky fan. If you register to win it, you only have yourself to blame. Stick with the Chicago Cubs Toyota 4Runner instead.
—E.T.
MISS: Lexus LC ‘Black Panther’ Concept
Yet another over-bling’d movie car for another superhero action flick. The only add-on it’s missing is a vinyl top. Since automakers now have to pay movie producers to supply such cars, the question is, what good does this thing do for Lexus’ luxury image?
—T.L.
HIT: Hyundai I30N TCR
Bryan Herta with his drivers Michael Lewis and Mark Wilkens introduced Hyundai’s first North American race car, the I30N TCR, which will compete this year in the Pirelli World Challenge’s new Touring Car class. Why a race car based on the not-for-North America Hyundai I30N instead of the new Veloster built on the same platform? Because the 130N Touring Car already has had success in Europe, and anyway, Hyundai says it’s not ruling out switching to a Veloster body some time in the future.
—T.L.
Damn, this thing looks cool. Want, want, want.
– A.G.
MISS: Hyundai Veloster ‘Ant Man and The Wasp’ Concept
This movie car, presumably for yet another comic book super hero adaptation, almost makes the Lexus LC ‘Black Panther’ movie car look tasteful by comparison. Almost.

Toyota: No Supra for Detroit, SUV Lineup to Expand
If you were hoping to see the return of the Toyota Supra in January at the North American International Auto Show, you will be disappointed.
It’s too soon to unveil the much-anticipated sports car. Specifications are still being finalized and it’s not at production levels yet, said Jack Hollis, Toyota group vice president and general manager of the Toyota division in North America.
Even the name has not been pinned down. Supra is a candidate but not the only candidate. In fact, “there are other names that could be better,” Hollis told Motor Trend in an interview. Cressida? Celica? And there have been suggestions it could be badged Gazoo instead of Toyota, a nod to Toyota’s Gazoo Racing team.
Toyota collaborated with BMW to create a rear-drive sports car platform for the respective automakers: a Z4 replacement for BMW and a Supra replacement for Toyota, creating some economies of scale for otherwise low-volume vehicles.
Toyota Supra spy shot
We have already seen the next Z4, but the closest we’ve seen to a Supra is the FT-1 concept at the 2014 Detroit auto show and a lot of spy shots of a sports car testing on the Nürburgring. Both cars will be built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.
Toyota made four generations of Supra from 1978 to 2002, initially as a derivative of the Celica. Its life was shorter in the U.S. where it left the market in 1998; it had already stopped production for Canada in 1986. It was known for its inline-six engines, and early versions boasted of an independent suspension tuned by Lotus. The third-generation Supra in 1986 split from the Celica which went front-wheel drive while the Supra remained rear-drive. A turbo was added in 1987, and by the fourth generation, it was a twin-turbo.
To partially fill the sports car gap, Toyota introduced the Scion FR-S in 2012 which became the Toyota 86 for the 2017 model year because the Scion brand was discontinued. There is no turbo planned for the 86 because it’s being saved for the Supra.
RAV4 styling cues
While the Supra replacement remains cloaked, Toyota continues to give us strong hints of some of the design cues for the next-generation RAV4 as well as possible new nameplates to expand the SUV lineup.
Toyota FT-AC
For exterior styling cues, look to the FT-AC (Future Toyota Adventure Concept) now on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The concept is a bit bigger than the current RAV4. Hollis sees room for a new crossover in the space between the current RAV4 and the Highlander SUV. There might even be room for two more crossovers.
Because there is room to expand the SUV lineup, while still needing to update existing vehicles, Toyota has shown three concepts since March that are fodder for both missions.
Concepts could become new nameplates
There is the FT-AC in L.A.; the smaller FT-4X (Future Toyota with all-wheel drive) shown at the New York auto show in March; and the TJ Cruiser van concept shown in Tokyo in October. All are ways for Toyota to explore design concepts and features to gauge public reaction and make production decisions.
The FT-AC has detachable foglights, cameras in the side mirrors, an integrated bike rack, and a formidable bin for a roof rack that has LED lighting on the back that can double as a flash for the cameras by using a mobile app. Images and video from the cameras can be uploaded via the vehicle’s Wi-Fi hotspot. Toyota is gauging reaction at the L.A. show only—the FT-AC will not be on display in Detroit because it’s saving NAIAS for a vehicle from a different family (again, not the Supra replacement). Within six months, a decision is expected on whether a version of the FT-AC goes into production as a new nameplate or if aspects of it are incorporated into other new vehicles such as the RAV4 or 4Runner.
The concepts are based on the flexible Toyota New Global Architecture, or TNGA, that will underpin the bulk of the company’s front-drive, car-based, unibody vehicle portfolio and is scaled for all sizes and can accommodate hybrid powertrains.
Toyota FT-4X
No production decision on the FT-4X, the first to be shown, has been made yet, Hollis said. And while initial reaction to the FT-AC in L.A. has been more positive than anticipated, a decision is still about six months out.
Spirit of the FJ Cruiser
Each concept has raised the specter of a return, at least in spirit, of the cult classic FJ Cruiser that was discontinued in 2014 and was on a different platform. Hollis doesn’t dismiss the idea of a more car-based reincarnation of the name. He just says it’s too soon to put it on any of the concepts yet. For now, the exercise is “learning where we might fit in new product down the road.”
Toyota TJ Cruiser
As for the new RAV4, Hollis wouldn’t say when the top-selling next-generation SUV is due. Details of the RAV4 are all locked down, and Toyota will not make any changes now that it has seen its main competitor, the Honda CR-V, which is Motor Trend’s 2018 SUV of the Year. “Nothing about the CR-V changes our product,” Hollis said.
Meanwhile, at an Automotive Press Association event in Detroit this week, Hollis noted the U.S. market is now a 64/36 split of truck/car sales while Toyota is selling closer to 59/41, showing potential growth with more SUVs. “We should be and we will be increasing in 2018,” he said.
Tundra development under way
On the truck side, the Tacoma is not ready for a refresh yet but work is underway to update the full-size Tundra. It’s still a couple years out, which means it will be after General Motors introduces a new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra and after Fiat Chrysler introduces its new Ram 1500.
As for Toyota’s big bet on fuel cell vehicles while the rest of the industry has chosen batteries for their pure electric vehicles, Hollis said the Mirai FCV, Class 8 heavy duty fuel cell truck, and other FCVs that generate electricity onboard are better products than battery-electric vehicles that have to be charged.
The automaker has announced plans to build the first fuel cell power generation plant with a hydrogen fueling station in Long Beach, Calif. It will be ready in 2020.
Hollis is convinced the public would embrace FCVs if the necessary hydrogen infrastructure was in place. Toyota is working with the state of California as well as co-investors but progress is slow. The state has only completed half the promised number of hydrogen stations, he said.
Toyota will continue to pursue every degree of electrification, he said, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, FCVs, and yes, even pure battery electric vehicles although that is the one flavor of EV it doesn’t currently have.

Toyota Planning to Refresh Entire Truck Line
Think about this for a second:
If you buy a 2018 Toyota Sequoia, you’re basically getting a 2008 Sequoia with some cosmetic changes.
This is one of those crazy-but-true factoids about buying a new car. While you’re getting a vehicle with zero miles and a fresh warranty, the design of the bits and pieces that make up the car are likely quite a few years old.
The Sequoia is an extreme example, but when Toyota has a combination that works, it’s not one to deviate much from the winning formula. That’s why today’s Sequoia is essentially the same brute that debuted in 2008.
There’s a similar story with the 4Runner, which sits on a chassis and runs on an engine from 2013, while the Tundra received its latest update in 2014.
Toyota has sat somewhat stagnant as other automakers continued to innovate in the truck world. But as we recently learned from Toyota’s strategy with cars, the automaker isn’t one to sit around and be surpassed by the competition.
Toyota group vice president of marketing Ed Laukes told Automotive News,
We are working on [updates to our body-on-frame platforms] right now. To continue to be able to address that, we have to work on upgrades. Let’s face it, the competition is getting stronger and stronger. Things like the Ranger coming back. We have to be able to address that. Now, the Tacoma was completely redone. But 4Runner, Sequoia, Tundra… those are being worked on as we speak.
So what does that mean for the immediate future? Well, we don’t know for sure. One possibility mentioned in the article is a hybrid drivetrain for the Tacoma, which would certainly change up the face of midsize pickups. But would it be more appealing than a diesel-powered Colorado or an EcoBoost Ranger?
My gut tells me no, but we’ll see what Toyota has up its sleeve.
Would you buy a hybrid Tacoma over a diesel Colorado or EcoBoost Ranger?

Toyota to Update Body-on-Frame Models, Considers Hybrid Truck
When it comes to its truck and body-on-frame SUV lineup, Toyota has been content with leaving well enough alone. Its offerings are good, but they haven’t really innovated anything in some time. The automaker is looking to change that in the next few years.
Speaking to Automotive News at the State Fair of Texas, Toyota group vice president of marketing Ed Laukes said the company has updates for its body-on-frame vehicles in the pipeline.
“We are working on [updates to our body-on-frame platforms] right now,” Laukes told AN. “To continue to be able to address that, we have to work on upgrades. Let’s face it, the competition is getting stronger and stronger. Things like the [Ford] Ranger coming back. We have to be able to address that. Now, the Tacoma was completely redone. But 4Runner, Sequoia, Tundra…those are being worked on as we speak.”
In addition to a redesigned exterior and interior, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma received a new 3.5-liter V-6 engine option, a new six-speed automatic transmission, and more high-strength steel in its frame to increase rigidity and lower weight. The Tundra received a major refresh for the 2014 model year and gets another minor one for 2018, but the updates are mostly cosmetic. The 4Runner received a refresh in 2013, but its chassis and engine date back to 2009. The Sequoia gets a refresh for 2018, but is essentially the same full-size SUV it was when it debuted for the 2008 model year.
Laukes also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a hybrid pickup.
“There’s absolutely no reason we couldn’t have a hybrid truck,” he said. “All those options, we’re exploring. When you’re trying to raise [corporate average fuel economy] limits for the entire brand, there’s no option that isn’t on the table.”
He didn’t say which truck might get a hybrid variant, but did say the Tacoma would be getting powertrain upgrades in order to stay competitive.
“We’re going to continue to work on all the improvements that are going to be necessary to keep Tacoma at the top of the class. So powertrains are obviously a big piece of anyone’s equation as we work on CAFE standards.”
