Final replace in 2020 introduced the 150kW/500Nm 2.8 GD-6 engine rather than the outdated 3.0 D-4D. Quizzed additional on studies of the Prado adopting a V6 turbodiesel engine, doubtless the identical 3.3-litre unit utilized by the Land Cruiser 300, and at one stage the rumoured however now seemingly cancelled GR Hilux, Hanley mentioned, “I can’t go there. I do know it’s your job, however I’m not ready to touch upon hypothesis”. He additionally shrugged off strategies concerning the Prado debuting earlier than the following technology Hilux in a preview position, saying, “we don’t talk about future mannequin plans. Toyota’s products, from the Yaris subcompact car to the Corolla sedan/Corolla hatchback to the 4Runner and RAV4 SUV, have penetrated world markets and achieved major sales success. Other offerings, like the Avalon, Highlander SUV, Sienna minivan, and Sequoia SUV have also done reasonably well, as have the Tundra and Tacoma pickup trucks. Toyota’s Prius (which will soon come with all-wheel drive) leads a range of hybrid vehicles that also includes the Camry Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, and soon, a Corolla Hybrid. Bold new versions of the Camry and Avalon were introduced with much more style than found in older models. Toyota's entry into the subcompact crossover market is the Toyota C-HR, with polarizing styling and fun driving dynamics. The brand has also made a considerable push into the performance category lately with the launch of the Toyota 86 (formerly the Scion FR-S) as well as the all-new Supra.

2020 Toyota RAV4 vs. 2020 Nissan Rogue: Compare Crossovers
With a lot of compact crossovers, picking the very best one usually boils down to really feels more than truths. For two of the very successful crossovers, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 as well as 2020 Nissan Rogue, the similarities are greater than the differences[power sliding door kit]
Both included common active safety attributes, available four-wheel drive, space for 5 individuals and their gear, as well as a good total value with a beginning rate of about $26,500. That's mirrored by nearly identical ratings, with the RAV4's 6.5 TCC Score getting the choice over the Rogue's 6.3. This story of the tape is a lot more nuanced, however. The RAV4 is the very popular non-truck in the U.S. for its regarded integrity, fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain, and rugged excellent appearances (actually!). The 2020 Nissan Rogue, which should not be puzzled with the smaller sized Rogue Sporting activity, is roomier, comfier, and features better standard tools. It's the 3rd very popular non-truck behind the Honda CR-V and RAV4.
An even more in-depth take a look at the categories that matter most need to assist make a decision which is finest for you. Redesigned for 2019, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 is fresher, edgier, and comes in seven trim degrees compared to the three trims for the 2020 Nissan Rogue. The 2020 RAV4 begins at $27,070 (consisting of $1,120 destination) in base LE trim and also has a much wider spread, with the new-for-2020 TRD Off-Road trim with common four-wheel drive topping the range at $36,400.
The aging 2020 Nissan Rogue is a lot more moderate, with a $26,395 beginning cost (including $1,095 location) in base S trim and a top rate of $34,135 in SL trim with all-wheel drive. Cost alone could be a difference-maker.
Prior to the 2019 redesign, the Toyota RAV4 mixed right into the bristling sea of compact crossovers. Currently it gets chunky fenders, hard angles, and also wide fascias that direct the 4Runner as well as Tacoma mid-size pick-up. The fake skid plate on some off-roading trims recommends an off-roading capacity it does not actually have, as well as the muscle posturing hides some performance it does not have.
The 2020 Nissan Rogue enters what probably will be its last manufacturing year before a complete redesign. That generally suggests offers are more plentiful if you don't mind the plainer, older design. The Rogue does not go rogue, and also blends right into that sea, despite the distinct V-shaped grille working as a life jacket. It is what it is: a capable and also positive day-to-day crossover, without the stylish pretensions of the RAV4[click].
Both crossovers are powered by workaday 2.5-liter inline-4 engines. The Rogue is the proletariat of both, making 170 horsepower and paired to a relatively seamless continuously variable transmission (CVT). It's simply great on common 17-inch wheels, and also pushing it does not do many favors on turns where it leans like a resting traveler. The CVT helps obtain the Rogue a 26 mpg city, 33 highway, 29 consolidated EPA ranking. Four-wheel drive drops it 2 mpg incorporated, and also bumps the sticker price by $1,350.
The RAV4's inline-4 makes 203 hp with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The rigid frame is countered by a four-wheel independent suspension that softens most roadway bumps. It's a bit much more sports, and also both offered all-wheel-drive systems fill a fundamental requirement for all-weather grip or, on Limited, Journey, and also TRD Off-Road trims, fill a want for even more efficiency on and off the roadway. Four-wheel drive adds $1,400, as well as gets about 25/33/28 mpg. Front-drive models obtain an EPA-rated 26/35/30 mpg.
The powertrain distinction for numerous could be the RAV4 Crossbreed. Nissan no more uses a hybrid option on the Rogue, which may turn fuel-conscious consumers to the Ford Getaway or Honda CR-V crossbreeds. Toyota is the undisputed hybrid champ, nevertheless, and the smooth trip with typical four-wheel drive prices at 41/38/40 mpg. There's a small bump in horsepower to 219, yet the electric motor and electrical CVT doesn't add grunt. The all-wheel-drive hybrid includes concerning $2,000 greater than the front-drive model down the line.

2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture First Drive
I don’t know why Nissan gets so much flak for its ancient Frontier and 370Z when there’s a fellow Japanese automaker equally guilty of neglecting its lineup: Toyota. The Tundra pickup, for instance, was first introduced in 2007 and hasn’t seen any significant changes since. The brand’s Sequoia and Land Cruiser SUVs are both just a year younger, making their debuts in 2008. And nearly as geriatric as the Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser is the SUV I’ve spent the last couple weeks driving, the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture. Although the 4Runner Venture is a new special edition trim level for 2020, the 4Runner has been soldiering on with little love from Toyota since it was born back in 2009—a lifetime ago in automotive years. So that begs the question, if you’re in the market for a rugged, robust, off-road-capable SUV, is the Toyota 4Runner a good buy?
What’s the Toyota 4Runner Venture?
The 4Runner Venture will be mechanically familiar to anyone who’s shopped for a 4Runner in the past decade. Built on a traditional body-on-frame platform shared with the Toyota Tacoma, Land Cruiser Prado, and Lexus GX, the 2020 4Runner Venture sports Toyota’s old 4.0-liter V-6 under its hood. Upgraded since its 2002 debut with Toyota’s dual variable valve timing technology, it makes 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque on all new 4Runners. It’s paired with a five-speed automatic gearbox and, standard on the Venture trim, four-wheel drive.
Based on the 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium, the “special edition” 4Runner Venture also comes standard with an electronically locking rear differential and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control off-road systems. Venture-exclusive bits include a Yakima cargo basket on the roof, 4Runner TRD Pro wheels with a matte-gray finish, all-weather floormats, and black painted mirrors and door handles. The most significant option on our 4Runner Venture tester was Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS, for $1,750), which features hydraulic piping that automatically disconnects the 4Runner’s anti-roll bars when it senses a wheel in the air off-road, dropping it back down to the ground.
How Does the Toyota 4Runner Drive?
In the age of the crossover, the 4Runner drives like a throwback to a mostly bygone era. Its 4.0-liter V-6 may be big for a six-cylinder, but its 270 horses and 278 lb-ft of torque are now eclipsed by more modern powertrains in competitors, like Jeep’s 3.6-liter V-6 and eight-speed auto combo, found in both the Wrangler (285 hp) and Grand Cherokee (295 hp), or the former’s hybridized 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, which produces 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
No one will mistake the 4Runner for being quick, but the old 4.0-liter and five-speed combo is a less frustrating drive partner than the 3.5-liter V-6 and six-speed auto that replaced this powertrain in the Tacoma. The 4Runner’s torque comes on relatively low in its powerband, which, when combined with the five-speed’s longggg gear ratios (and assuming you keep your foot buried in the throttle), gives the Toyota class-competitive acceleration and passing performance. That’s assuming the auto is in the right gear, of course, as shifts are as slow and slurred as our crew after an evening of aged brown liquids.
More impressive than the way it accelerates is the way our KDSS-equipped 4Runner rides. Despite its light, vague steering and penchant for midcorner axle hop and chassis shudder on harsh impacts both on- and off-road, the 4Runner’s KDSS system still does a remarkable job at quieting down the ride. Working hand in hand with its high-sidewall tires, the 4Runner floats over bumps rather well, minimizing the transfer of impacts into the cabin and to the driver.
What’s the 4Runner’s Interior Like?
Speaking of the average consumer, the 4Runner’s cabin more than anything else will betray the Toyota’s age. The world has changed much in the last decade, but the 4Runner hasn’t; the biggest differences between the 2020 4Runner and 2010 model is a revised dash with a digital driver’s instrument display, some minor tweaks to the center stack, and a new 8.0-inch infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The cabin is functional but dated when compared with those of the Jeep Wrangler, the similarly old Grand Cherokee, and the upcoming 2021 Ford Bronco. The front seats are comfortable—though headroom is tight due to a combination of our tester’s optional moonroof and the 4Runner’s low roofline—and the back seat is spacious. The 4Runner’s sliding rear cargo deck, a $350 option, is also quite useful. It slides the whole cargo floor backward over the rear bumper, eliminating the need to reach deep into the Toyota’s deep cargo area to snag loose items.
There’s without a doubt room for improvement, though. For starters, the cabin is loud. Thanks to the optional TRD exhaust’s banal drone at highway speeds and a general lack of sound deadening, you’ll likely find yourself constantly reaching for the volume knob on the freeway in an attempt to hear your music. Material quality and fit and finish are also at least a generation behind what Toyota has proven itself capable of on newer vehicles, like the RAV4.
How Much Does the 4Runner Venture Cost?
More than any other place, here’s where the 4Runner Venture runs into its biggest hurdle: It’s a poor value. At $48,227 as tested ($44,755 to start), the 4Runner Venture is undercut by both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. A comparably equipped Wrangler Unlimited Sport S can be had for $44,910, or, if having a special edition is a must for you, $45,560 for a Wrangler Unlimited Willys with a more efficient turbocharged engine and eight-speed automatic. A Grand Cherokee would be even cheaper—a similarly spec’d Grand Cherokee North Edition can be had for $44,305. Both not only offer up more refined cabins and modern powertrains than the Toyota (not to mention at least equal off-road capability), but, adding insult to injury, are decidedly more efficient, too. The EPA rates the 4Runner Venture at 16/19/17 mpg city/highway/combined, while the Grand Cherokee nets 18/25/21 mpg, and the Wrangler 18/22/20 mpg with the V-6, or 21/22/21 mpg with the turbo-four. Of course, both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee can become significantly more expensive and even crest $60,000 fully loaded, but their base models are so capable, they still outshine the 4Runner Venture.
So, Is the Toyota 4Runner a Good Buy?
On my first day of Media 101 at St. Bonaventure University, I learned that as a journalist, you should never ask a question in a headline that you don’t answer. So as to not disappoint professor John Hanchette: Is the 2020 4Runner a good purchase? In a word, no. Buying a new 2020 4Runner is a lot like buying a new iPhone 4 at iPhone 11 prices—yes, there’s lots to love about the iPhone 4, but it doesn’t necessarily meet all of our modern needs, especially at the 2020 asking price. The 4Runner is handsome, off-road capable, and rides well, but the competitors offer up better performance, better efficiency, and better quality for the money.

The Range Rover Sport HST Hits the Sweet Spot
Tumblr media
Land Rover needs little introduction to the luxury-shopping community. The famed British company owns nearly exclusive rights to the top of the luxury SUV mountain—at least for those with their eyes set below the two-hundred-thousand-and-up club dominated by Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The flagship, full-size Range Rover remains Land Rover’s crown jewel. However, the smaller Range Rover Sport model remains the best-selling Land Rover in the United States.
Plenty of Power, Plenty of Posh
Like most vehicles in the Land Rover stable, the Range Rover Sport comes in a wide variety of trims. And before we start talking about “value,” it’s worth noting: All Land Rovers are expensive. At the bottom of the totem pole lives the SE, with prices starting at $68,650. There’s the HSE above that, starting at $74,250, and the fire-breathing SVR at the top of the pile, coming in at $114,500. Shoppers can choose among a range of engines—gasoline, diesel, and hybrid plug-in—although 4WD comes standard (this is a Land Rover, after all).
Tucked away in the upper-middle section of the lineup lives the HST trim. Fitted with a spruced-up version of Land Rover’s homegrown Ingenium inline 6-cylinder engine, the HST delivers 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Land Rover augments that power with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system designed to save gas and pump fewer emissions into the atmosphere. Starting price? A Goldilocks $82,950.
Tumblr media
The HST clearly delivers the goods under the hood. Maybe it manages that a bit less excitingly than an SVR, but it certainly does it with more decorum. Inside the cabin, it’s all Range Rover, too. Red leather upholstery covers the dash, and interspersed black swaths add a racy flavor that will almost certainly appeal to Land Rover’s celebrity customers.
High-Tech Touches
A premium Meridian sound system delivers crisp sound, and your tunes are easily managed whether you opt to use Land Rover’s infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto.  The dual-screen setup in the Range Rover Sport takes barely a minute to learn, and after a week of driving, we thoroughly preferred it to many competitors’ single-screen designs. In particular, it was nice being able to use Android Auto’s Google Maps feature on the top screen while still managing our Spotify choices on the lower screen.
Tumblr media
Despite Land Rover’s reputation for technological troubles, our test car never faltered. The only annoyance came from Land Rover’s perplexing Adaptive Speed Limited. Rather than working like traditional cruise control, the default setting pegs the car at the posted speed limit. You can ask it to keep the speed a few miles per hour faster or slower than the road signs request, but it requires an extra step.
A Bull in a China Shop
Despite its cultured cabin, there’s no getting around the Range Rover Sport’s size. While it doesn’t look particularly enormous sitting in a driveway, it feels positively massive on the road. Driving next to an Audi Q5, we found ourselves looking over and thinking, “What are they doing all the way down there?” Adjusting the Sport’s ride height to off-road mode only adds to this feeling.
Tumblr media
Further, the Range Rover Sport has a nearly inexcusably large turning radius. Yes, we know we’re talking about a genuine, off-road capable SUV here. But at more than 20 feet, it’s significantly wider than a Toyota 4Runner’s. It was exhausting to wrangle this car through the narrow streets of Cambridge, Massachusetts. You’d think an iconic British brand would know the merits of a nimble steering rack.
Regardless, the Land Rover badge still stands for something. Namely: luxury and capability. The Range Rover Sport’s HST trim fulfills those requirements at a (by Land Rover standards) reasonable price. Choose your options judiciously, and an HST can deliver everything you want out of a luxury SUV.

Best New Overland Vehicles: Factory-Backed Off-Roaders Ready for the Trail
For many overlanders and off-roaders, modifying their SUV or truck is half the fun—I know this full well, as I’ve watched my wife turn her Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid into a light-duty overland expedition rig. But modifying any vehicle (not to mention assuming you know better than a team of highly skilled automotive engineers) can be risky, especially if you plan on heading off the beaten path.
At worst, a poorly chosen part could break, leaving you stranded a long hike from the nearest pavement. At best, you might destroy the way your vehicle drives. With that in mind, here’s a list of MotorTrend’s picks of the best new overland vehicles.
All 10 of these trucks and SUVs are ready for overland travels right off the lot, and they’ve also been tried and tested by us off-road on the trail. We’ve also kept in mind prices, factory options, and payload capacities. After all, a vehicle that’s good off-road but can’t haul your rooftop tent and gear is of little use. Here’s what we came up with:
2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2
Price: $44,490 Pros: Tremendously versatile—equally at home on the highway, running the Baja, and rock crawling. AEV Bison package is appealing for overlanding, too. Cons: Cabin is spacious but feels cheap; diesel fuel economy should be better.
The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has proven itself to be a capable overlander multiple times, including on our journey across the Trans-Labrador Highway and on the infamous Mojave Road. We love its standard MultiMatic DSSV dampers, which give the ZR2 exceptional manners both on the road and off it, and its electronic full-locking front and rear differentials for low-traction situations, which is becoming increasingly rare from factory vehicles.
Available with a 308-hp 3.6-liter V-6 or a 186-hp 2.8-liter turbodiesel I-4 and with a payload capacity of up to 1,100 pounds, the Colorado ZR2 is also available with the AEV Bison package. That adds boron steel skidplates and bumpers for extra peace of mind off-road.
2020 Ford F-150 Raptor
Price: $55,150 Pros: Powerful, fast, and fun to drive. Ford’s Trail Control and off-road drive modes help make things easy. Cons: The Raptor’s payload is unimpressive for its size, and its dimensions might give you trouble on narrow trails.
Arguably the vehicle responsible for starting the warranty-backed desert-running truck craze, the Raptor is unsurprisingly quite capable as an overland platform, too. Although its large size might make life trickier on narrow trails (its tires and fender flares make it wide enough to require clearance lights), the Raptor’s cushy Baja-ready electronically adjustable Fox shock absorbers, meaty tires, and powerful 450-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 help make it one of the most fun-to-drive overlanders on this list. Don’t forget to tick the box for the bead-lock wheels (allowing you to run super low tire pressures without the tires falling off the rim) and the limited-slip front differential. The Raptor has payload capacity of up to 1,000-1,200-pounds.
2020/2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon/Mojave
Price: $45,370 Pros: Like a billy goat, a stock Gladiator can take you almost anywhere, thanks to its long list of standard off-road features. Good payload capacity for its size, too. Cons: The manual is geared too tall, cabin can be noisy, sub-par breakover angle, and Gladiators get pricey quickly.
Despite just losing to the Colorado Bison in a recent comparison, the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and the newly released Gladiator Mojave are easy adds to this list. If the Gladiator’s segment-best four-wheel drive payload of up to 1,200 pounds doesn’t pique your interest, the tremendous capability brought forth by its off-road hardware should.
The Rubicon model, the more rock-focused of the two, sports locking front and rear differentials, an electronic anti-roll bar disconnect for increased articulation, and a low range with a 4:1 crawl ratio. We haven’t driven the desert-focused Gladiator Mojave yet, but we have no reason to believe it would be less capable than the Rubicon. It gets a beefed-up frame and shocks to handle high speeds across the desert, plus a wider front track for better stability.
It also gets a locking rear differential, but it lacks a front locker or anti-roll bar disconnect. Both models get 33-inch tires, steel bumpers, skidplates, rock rails, and a standard 3.6-liter V-6 with 285 hp. One knock: Its long wheelbase means the Gladiator drags its well-armored belly on nearly everything.
2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
Price: $43,620 Pros: See Jeep Gladiator: There aren’t many places a stock Wrangler won’t go. Tremendously capable and well-thought-out package from the factory. Cons: Low payload capacity, cabin can be noisy, and the Jeep’s suspension setup favors a steady pace, unlike some of the desert runners on this list.
An off-road comparison test winner and 2019 SUV of the Year, the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is an easy add to this list. Few vehicles are as tremendously capable from the factory floor as the Wrangler Rubicon. Sporting the exact same hardware as the Gladiator Rubicon but in a more compact, maneuverable package, the Wrangler can directly trace its lineage back to the World War II Willys MB, the vehicle that created the SUV and this segment.
A 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 is standard on the Wrangler, and both a 270-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 (our favorite) and a 260-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 are optional. The Wrangler’s payload capacity is 892 pounds, though, so pack light.
2020 Land Rover Defender 110
Price: $50,925 Pros: A thoroughly modern 21st century overlander; supremely comfortable and capable with a high payload capacity. Seats up to eight. Cons: The mild hybrid engine is an expensive option; brakes can be a bit touchy.
It’s easy to dismiss the new Defender 110 for its unibody chassis and fully independent air suspension, but despite its modernity it’s a tremendously capable (and comfortable) overlander. With full-time four-wheel drive, automatic locking center and rear differentials, and Land Rover’s latest Terrain Response software, the Defender drastically reduces the learning curve for budding overland enthusiasts.
Land Rover also offers an Explorer package from the factory, complete with a heavy-duty expedition-style roof rack and snorkel, a winch, an onboard air compressor, a shower (say what?), and more. We’ve yet to drive the base 296-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, but the optional 395-hp 3.0-liter electrically supercharged and turbocharged I-6 is more than sufficiently powerful. Payload ratings of as much as 2,100 pounds are truly impressive.
2020 Ram 2500 Power Wagon
Price: $50,085 Pros: Arguably the most off-road-capable pickup on the market; great payload capacity; and a standard winch, lockers, and electronic anti-roll bar disconnect. Cons: If you thought the Raptor was big, wait until you see this thing. Has a drinking problem.
Like the Wrangler, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon can trace its roots back to World War II, when the Dodge WC (to be named “Power Wagon” when the civilian version went on sale in 1946) helped the Allies in their winning war effort. It’s modern descendant has proven itself time and time again, ably conquering whatever we can throw at it despite its size.
Powered by a thirsty 6.4-liter V-8 with 410 hp, the Power Wagon sports locking front and rear diffs, an electronic anti-roll bar disconnect, steel body armor, and a Warn winch rated for 12,000 pounds. Although the Power Wagon is a stand-alone model, it’s also possible to spec it as a package on the base Tradesman model. It’s rated to haul 1,500-1,620 pounds.
2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro
Price: $50,985 Pros: Impressive payload, great ride quality, and beefy drivetrain. Cons: Dated, cramped cabin—powertrain is even older. Inefficient for its size.
The 4Runner has long been a favorite of off-roaders because of its perceived reliability and large aftermarket support. With the creation of the TRD Pro model in 2017, you no longer need to modify your 4Runner to take a beating, as it’s tremendously capable out of the box.
Long-travel Fox Racing Shox, a locking rear diff, a snorkel, and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system are all standard on the 4Runner TRD Pro. Despite its capability, the 4Runner is one of the most dated vehicles on this list, with a cramped, cheap-feeling cabin and a 270-hp 4.0-liter V-6 that dates back to 2002. Even with its old powertrain, this old girl can haul up to 1,550 pounds.
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser
Price: $86,740 Pros: Lives up to its legendary reputation; will likely last longer than you will; off-road turn assist makes the Land Cruiser feel far smaller than it is. Cons: She’s a thirsty girl; third row impedes cargo space; transmission’s tall gearing can make life more difficult than it needs to be off-road, especially at higher attitudes.
More than any other vehicle, the Toyota Land Cruiser’s reputation is overlanding. Since they first went into production in 1951, Land Cruisers have been favorites of explorers, farmers, militaries, armed militias, and everything in between because of their capability, durability, and reliability.
The current Land Cruiser is getting on in years and is on the bigger side, but it’s tough to beat this package. Its 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 is backed up by locking center and rear differentials, Multi-Terrain Select, a neat turn assist feature negating its size disadvantage, and the fantastic-riding hydraulic suspension. The functionally identical (though approach angle–challenged) Lexus LX 570 is also available. Skip the third-row package to put its 1,320 pound payload capacity to good use.
Honorable Mentions:
2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty Tremor
Price: $53,390 Pros: Nothing here can haul as much as far as the F-350 Tremor. Cons: Like the Power Wagon and Raptor, the Tremor is massive. It’s thirsty, too.
Although we’ve yet to go overlanding with the new Ford Super Duty Tremor, early impressions off-road are promising. Ford’s answer to the Power Wagon, the Tremor is available in F-250 and F-350 forms and capable of hauling up to 3,890 pounds. Powertrains include a monstrous 7.3-liter V-8 with 430 hp or a 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8 with 475 hp. The Tremor package gives the Super Duty an off-road-oriented suspension with a lift, a locking rear and limited-slip front differential, and massive 35-inch off-road tires.
2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro
Price: $45,055 Pros: Great ride quality, tidy dimensions, and a decent payload. Cons: Poor powertrain calibration and lack of low-end grunt; cramped cabin, especially for taller drivers.
The Tacoma TRD Pro is arguably the most popular overland vehicle in the U.S. There’s a lot we like about the Tacoma—chiefly the bits it shares with the 4Runner, such as its comfy Fox Shox, Multi-Terrain Select system, snorkel, tidy dimensions, and 1,175-pound payload. We’re less fond of the Tacoma’s underpowered 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6, jerky transmission, and cramped cabin; it’s capable stock, but nowhere near as capable as it needs to be. Even so, with those caveats, the Tacoma TRD Pro is certainly worthy of consideration.

The 2019 Kia K900 Excels as a Classic Luxury Flagship
Tumblr media
The Kia K900 debuted for the 2015 model year as a genuine competitor to established full-size luxury sedans like the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Or, at least, that was the plan.
Despite an impressive spec sheet, Kia’s big cruiser failed to gain real traction in the luxury segment. With a total redesign for 2019, Kia is giving the K900 another go. To start, the V8 has been replaced by a more modern twin-turbo V6. The infotainment system pairs a euro-style rotary controller with a touch-sensitive screen. And all-wheel drive now comes on every K900. This all qualifies as what the auto industry likes to call “a good start.”
To see if the new K900 is truly a luxury competitor, we slogged through nearly an hour of Boston traffic before enjoying nearly 200 uninterrupted miles of highway on our way to Burlington, Vermont. After all, what better way to gauge a full-size luxury sedan than a road trip?
This Sure Doesn’t Feel Like a Kia
The first thing you’ll notice when entering the K900 is how it doesn’t feel like a run-of-the-mill Kia. Brown Nappa leather covers nearly every inch of the cabin, and the 20-way adjustable driver seat means anyone behind the wheel will be able to find a comfortable position. The backseat, in particular, fills the primary requirement of a luxury sedan: Sitting in the second row will make you feel like the most important person in the car, not like you’ve been relegated there because the front seat was taken.

The K900 feels smaller than it is, too. Don’t be surprised if passengers suggest it’s a midsize sedan, rather than a full-size. With the help of Kia’s surround-view camera, it’s as easy to park and maneuver as a smaller car, too.
That said, the second thing you’re likely to notice is the K900’s rapidly dropping fuel-gauge needle. Driving through traffic, the K900 was quiet and powerful, although surprisingly different than a Kia Stinger or Genesis G70, both of which use the K900’s engine. Rather than sprinting from stoplights like those two sports-oriented machines, the K900 swept us away with very little drama. All of that sweeping, however, takes a toll on fuel economy. Even with two fewer cylinders than the previous-generation K900, don’t expect this one to be a gas sipper.

Granted, things got better once we hit the highway. Silence is possibly the K900’s most noteworthy attribute. Smooth power delivery and a peaceful ride are requirements of any luxury car, and the K900 offers both. Combined with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, I finished a 3.5-hour drive to Lake Champlain astonishingly refreshed. Something as abstract as “quiet” is tough to notice when driving, but once you do, you’ll continually appreciate it. By keeping me alert and refreshed, the lack of droning road noise is practically a safety feature.
Safety Comes Standard
On the topic of safety, cameras and sensors are almost compulsory in a sedan as big as the K900. Kia’s suite of advanced safety features does make driving much easier, and the unique blind-spot cameras are particularly helpful. When the driver hits a turn signal, the K900’s instrument panel will replace either the left or right gauge with a digital video feed from a camera mounted under the corresponding wing mirror. The picture is predictably grainy during night-time driving, but still provides a clearer view of the K900’s blind spots than its wing mirrors do.

A Good Value… Today
Unfortunately, the K900’s appointments, performance, and safety can’t help it clear its current hurdle. Nor can the car’s 12.3-inch touchscreen or 17-speaker Lexicon sound system, as impressive as they are. On the surface, the K900 appears to be a great deal. Its sub-$65,000 price certainly makes it a financially pragmatic approach to luxury; this car offers 90% of what you can get from a BMW 7 Series at 70% of the price.

But developing a car takes a long time—years, at least. So, when Kia was designing the K900 for a 2015 model-year launch, a big V8 engine and rear-wheel drive fit the bill. But Kia quickly found itself behind the times with that formula, as shoppers showed greater interest in fuel economy and all-wheel drive. The resale values of those early K900s support this; take a look around, and you’ll find plenty of low-mileage first-generation cars priced well below $30,000.
Similarly, the 2019 Kia K900 has been developed to suit those 2018 desires, but the world of luxury is now pivoting hard toward hybrid and all-electric powertrains. As a result, the Porsche Taycan and Tesla’s Model S, Model X, and Model 3 look like the future of luxury, and even the more conventional 7 Series now offers a hybrid variant. Today, the K900 looks and feels amazing. But I can’t help but wonder if, tomorrow, it will have aged the way many older full-size sedans have: classically cool at best, outmoded and inefficient at worst.
