Hello and welcome back to Soulmate September! Firstly, sorry for the delay, it’s been a busy couple of months and I’ve had little time and motivation for any but the bare minimum lately.

Anyway, I’ve done up a quick list and a pretty little graphic for this years prompts.

I’ve gone a little different this year—we've got three soulmate tropes to play with, including a new one that we came up with in one of my Discord chats—and two general prompts that you can pair with the soulmate trope of your choice!

Remember, the prompts are meant to inspire you, you don’t have to fit the letter of the prompt—just create something! If you think it fits, IT FITS!!! (And no one will be policing your work, if they do, block them!)

So, without further ado, here are your Soultember Prompts for 2023!

Red String of Fate – everyone is connected to their soulmate/s by a line or thread. 

Soul Freckles – everyone has a set of freckles that form a distinctive shape that hints at who their soulmate will be. The trick is interpreting them.

First Words – everyone has the first words their soulmate says to them tattooed on their body.

Fun Holidays – choose a day from this website and combine it with your favourite soulmate trope! 

Monet in Paris – this one is inspired by recent visits to the Monet in Paris and Van Gogh Alive exhibitions but it doesn’t have to be Monet or Van Gogh! Use this prompt however it inspires you – an Artist AU, your favourite artist, an art gallery, an artistic quote, colour. Go wild!

FFVII Rare Pair Week 2024

Urban Dictionary defines rarepair as “A ship or pairing that not many people ship or is very rare to find fanfiction and fanart of. Typically happens within small fandoms or with minor characters.” So what’s your favourite Final Fantasy VII related rare pair? Do you have more than one? Here’s a chance to showcase them and help them move up from being rare! Not all parts of the pairing have to be from FFVII, and you don’t have to do the same pairing or group for the whole week! ** Pairings can be romantic or platonic. ** Below we have a list of prompts for this year. Feel free to be as creative with those as you want to, and take your time working on your entries, but please don’t forget to post them on the right date if you can. (But remember, no matter how late it’s better than never!)

For this event we are using a category approach. You can use the category as a theme for your prompt and the listed items suggested ideas. If none of the prompts give you any ideas, don’t worry! You can create anything you like for the week, provided it involves a rare pair! The goal of the week is to celebrate and share our rare pairs more than to just follow a list. Be it art, writing, mood boards, or even fic recs, just spread the love!

Feb. 16 | Day 1. Weather. Sunshine. Rain. Storms. The weather can create a meaningful moment, or a huge inconvenience. 

Feb. 17 | Day 2. Unexpected Challenges. How does your pairing deal with an unexpected challenge? (For example, they come back home from a trip to find the pipes have frozen and they have no running water. Is one of them using the last of the drinking water to save their dying house plants while the other is desperately melting snow to keep the humans alive?)

Feb. 18 | Day 3. Favourite Things. From favourite things about each other to favourite items of clothing stolen to wear around the house (much to the other’s chagrin), or favorite things to do for or with each other.

Feb. 19 | Day 4. Near Death Experiences. For the angst lovers, the whumpers, this could be a true near death experience. For the lighter side, it could be something much less serious but someone is clearly being dramatic for sympathy. 😀

Feb. 20 | Day 5. Free Day/Combo Day. Combo space to mix and match prompts from this year (or a previous year’s list) or go wherever your canoe takes you!

Feb. 21 | Day 6. Events. Holidays, celebrations, traditions. Whether it’s a joyful day like a birthday or one of mourning like a memorial, there are many days throughout the year that bring us together. What’s a day that’s important to your pairing, or a time that brought them together for something that isn’t part of their regular day to day?

Feb. 22 | Day 7. Stories. Stories play a big part in our lives. They inspire, they entertain, they teach. Is there a story that your characters hold dear, or that they recount often to friends (or their kids)? (Or is there a story about your rare pair that you want to recommend to others today?)

Merry Christmas!! Once you’re done opening gifts and have some quiet time, please enjoy reading my @chenfordsecretsanta story.

@chenfordspiral gave me some awesome prompts to choose from. I chose to write an alternate meeting for Tim and Lucy while they were snowed into an airport on Christmas Eve. I put Genny and her boys there, too, for lots of fun family moments.

I hope you enjoy it. I tend to write long stories, so you’ll need to allocate a bit of time to it. It’s perfect for a lazy holiday read. Kudos and particularly comments would be great Christmas gifts.

Last TV Show Watched: Shameless. I’m in the beginning of season 9 and it is messing me up in 5000 different ways. The acting is great (sometimes) and the writing is awful (mostly) and the storylines are ridiculous (always) and it’s at least 5 or 6 seasons too long. But every once in a while it really makes you think, and it’s completely gotten under my skin. And I will finish it if it’s the last thing I ever do. And it might be, because wow.

Last Book/Fic Finished: I just finished Justin Torres’ Blackouts and I LOVED it. And the most recent chapter of @glitterslag’s It's Been You and Me Since Before I Was Me — is a witchy creepy Appalachian Gothic MASTERPIECE that I adore. Oh and Blissymbolics’ Colorless Richie Jerimovich, also a masterpiece even though it is sydrichie and that is giving me a teeny tiny identity crisis okay moving on

Last Book/Fic Abandoned: I am thisclose to giving up on Lessons In Chemistry. I do not get this book at all.

Currently Reading: nobody ever got my soul right like she could by seh28

Last Thing Researched for Art/Writing/Hyperfixation: Quite a bit about what happens to children of people wirh narcissistic personality disorder (hi Donna, yes I am armchair psychologizing and pathologizing a fictional character) for the fic I’m currently writing. I’m not a really intense researcher, but I’ve read all about elevator mechanics and ancient marriage rites and British parking tickets and EMP’s 2019 spring menu and how to cook uni and where pastina comes from, all for fics. I love that aspect of writing.

Favorite Online Fandom Memory: It’s embarrassing, but it’s probably the first time that one of my favorite fic authors commented on one of my own fics, ca. 2018. I was on the subway, and I dropped my phone on the disgusting wet floor when I saw the incredibly lovely comment they’d posted.

FaNvorite Old Fandom You Wish Would Drag You Back In/Have A Resurgence: I really only have two old fandoms, but I do miss HP quite a bit. It’s such a robust space, with really nice people, and so many different fests and prompts and challenges. I still read a bit when my favorite authors post, and would like to write for it again someday. (Also, if you’re the anon who’s messaged me multiple times to tell me that my new fics aren’t as good or creative as my HP, and that I “used to be a good writer” — please stop. That’s not the way to convince me to go back, and it makes me feel bad)

Favorite Thing You Enjoy That Never Had an Active or Big "Fandom" but You Wish It Did: Truly I’ve never experienced a hyperfixation like I have with The Bear. I wish fanfic had existed in its current state when I was younger, or that I’d been cool enough to figure out the concept and write it on my own. I would have been VERY ACTIVE in a Dead Poets Society fandom if it had existed when I was obsessed with that movie, a decade after it came out, when I watched it practically every day for a year 🤪

2022 in Mittens Fic

It’s time again for the annual accounting of things I wrote this year! I’m pleased that while still a disappointingly low total for me, I still beat my total word count from 2021, so progress is being made, which I’ll always gladly take! Honestly anything is better than that 2020 total at this point lolol! I long since abandoned my goal of ever surpassing the 250k i posted in 2015, but that’s okay! I still wrote a decent bit!

I managed a Pinefest fic, a DCRB fic, AND a DCBB fic this year, which is the first time I’ve ever managed all three, so go me I guess? And maybe I enjoy working to deadlines more than I ever assumed before? Or maybe I would’ve written even more if I hadn’t been pushing at deadlines (and letting myself slack off, even if rest is important and beneficial to writer brain, when I was far ahead of schedule...). But I’m overall pretty pleased with this year’s works.

I tied last year’s fic total, with six, but beat last year’s word count with 117,486, so go me! Not even counting the ~63k fic i’m working on for pinefest this year...even if it’s already written it’s not posting until February. Love rolling over a big fic into the new year every year like this. it feels weirdly like cheating somehow, yet I do it every year :’D

Also slightly cheating, but since I mentioned it last year, I still haven’t missed a week of my eternal rewatch podcast, @spngeorg which is still going strong! Uploading episode 91, 5.09 The Real Ghostbusters tonight! If my millions of words of written meta aren’t enough for you, you can now hear me being grumpy about this show out loud! (new episodes drop every Thursday night at or around midnight eastern time, if you’re interested you can start from the beginning on AnchorFM or wherever you enjoy podcasts!)

Let’s get to the fic! Presented in the order they posted:

Mr. Fix It (54,383 words, rated M) written for the Pinefest. It started with a photo of the shopping center sign that Mel sent me several years back, and the instruction “this is a writing prompt.” Amazingly, it was a great writing prompt! and a great art prompt, thanks to @lotrspnfangirl! Dean runs a repair shop called Mr. Fix It with Charlie, and Cas runs the bar at the other end of the strip mall, Steve’s. There’s shady real estate dealings, secret identities, and found family taking care of each other through it all.

lectio in equis (13,016 words, rated T) my first ever DCRB, and I screamed delightedly when I claimed @scarlettmichkat ’s artwork! Actually still kinda lowkey screaming about it. I LOVE this artwork. Like, wanna frame it and hang it in my living room love. Canon case fic, sort of, as Dean and Cas get to play cowboy for a day looking for a lost MoL chapter storage facility out in the New Mexico desert. Plus, Jesse and Cesar being the best retired hunters.

Baby X-File (2,698 words, rated T) Written for the final GISH hunt, a crossover scene between SPN and the X Files, canon-adjacent to both, to a prompt from my team captain who isn’t on tumblr... thank you Sammy!

honey wine  (764 words, rated T) annual deancasversary fic! They go to the rennfest, and medieval hilarity and fluff ensues

Heart Shaped Box  (43,504 words, rated M) my DCBB this year, canon case fic wherein Dean and Cas are the case. beautifully illustrated by @marvfortytwo​ and a cathartic walk through a series of memories. I mostly wanted to revisit . Set within days of Dean rescuing Cas from the Empty, because that’s exactly what happened in canon as we all know (I SAID, AS WE ALL KNOW).

The Ghost of Christmas Present(s) (3,121 words, rated T) annual holiday fic, Dean and Cas attempt holiday shopping together. hilarity and shmoop ensue.

And that’s my year in fic. Like I said at the top, I’ve already got more than half this total written to post in 2023, so it looks like I’m still not slowing down. Since I posted my To Be Written file’s stats last year, I figured I should do the same again...

lol... a year later, two pages and 1400 more words added... i swear at this rate i will never finish writing it all, which I find weirdly comforting.

Secret Snowman + Levihan 12 Days of Christmas Announcement! 🎄🎅❄

Hey Levihans!

The core content team has prepared some events to celebrate the winter holidays and first up is the highly requested Secret Snowman Gift Exchange! This will be a fan work exchange (fics, art, AMVs/edits) and you will have the chance to specify which mediums you prefer to give and receive.

Rules will be as follows:

1. In order to receive a gift, you have to give a gift

2. All works must be safe for work (SFW)

3. Gifts will be due by December 31

for the director's cut, could you talk a little about the mitch/stoffel parts of your daniel goes to fe fic? i love this pairing and i love how you write them, i guess i want to know what interests you in their dynamic, why you chose to put them together etc! anything you want to say about them really!

sooooooo a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (GP2, rip my beloved we will never 4get u) there was stoffel and mitch. mitch is actually 2 years younger than stoffel but got to GP2 a year before him because mitch is the youngest ever GP3 winner and stoffel was begging for someone to pay for him to go racing.

in a way, it's crazy that stoffel was the one of the two who got to f1 and that's mostly cus no one wanted to drive that mchonda and also mclaren had no money to pay anyone else to do it anyway. and mitch was mark webber's first flop era attempt at managing someone while he was still doing his own full-time racing career so like. what the fuck mahk wibbah.

but anyway, so, they were frens in GP2 because mitch knew all the red bull juniors and pierre knew stoffel. mitch goes to formula e at the end of 2016, stoffel graduates to having the worst time ever in f1 for the 2017 season, all very standard. it's really obvious that stoffel's time in f1 is cursed and short, from the start and by the end of the 2018 season he's well out of the door and into the loving arms of formula e. and mitch.

stoffel never really made friends in f1, all his friends were still the people who he'd driven against in junior categories, who were in formula e. antonio, robin, mitch, brendon, whoever else appeared on their insta stories bike ride content around then. well, prob not robin exercising but still.

like mitch, stoffel has to drive a hopeless shitbox for his whole first season in fe before the team morphs into mercedes (derogatory) and becomes the inexplicable villains of the series.

and then and then we get to the good bit! which is friendly rivalries (actual). one of them just won the title, the other just lost it here and i think you'd be hard pressed to guess which. a week later they were on holiday on a yacht together taking slutty swimsuit photos. mitch has stoffel's championship trophy??? these men have seen everything, including the best and worst of each other and they are besties and i think that's just neat.

i guess i put them together just because i assumed everyone did! it actually really surprised me that there wasn't like, loads more. the vibes of the title and that end in seoul/their boat holiday were particularly what prompted it but they just seemed very obvious as a pairing to me and it was a little bit of a shock that no one else thought so.

the way i write them is like. they are both very soft and snuggly boys who have a few too many feelings for motorsport, really. stoffel is quite tricky to grasp whereas mitch is sort of easy to put words in the mouth of, which is why it's stoffel's perspective but also that's putting waaaaay too much thought process into the way i write anything.

the whole vibe of the fic is sort of trying to find (and keep) something that's real, while everything feels very synthetic. and what's more canon in the emptyhalf universe than falling in love with your flatmate.

I've written a bunch of holiday fics in the past, but I am partial to the mistletoe fic I wrote for wrestlefandom in December because it was my first prompt from @sarahcakes613 and one of my first ensemble fics in the fandom! Also, mistletoe shenanigans are always fun!

Cold Outside - Mercedes Hawke x Anders - Holiday Prompt - Dragon Age Canon Verse - All the pining - 1628 words

The Hanged Man during Santinalia was boisterous, exciting, distracting. Mercedes still wasn’t used to being out in the open among people and on purpose. After a lifetime of hiding from strangers and Templars, being an openly apostate mage in the middle of Kirkwall could only be described as idiotic. If only her father could see her now.

In attempts to save up money for the deep roads, she has done odd jobs all over the city. She made quite a bit of coin finding and fetching things, serving as an inconspicuous bodyguard-nobody ever suspected the slight, female mage.

Even more recently, she’d volunteered time in the clinic with Anders. Helping people unable to help themselves earned her favor with the undesirables of the city. She knew they would never turn her in, but she still worried. It was hard to break habits instilled in her from such a young age. To trust nobody, stay out of sight, fight only when necessary, don’t advertise magic.

Sitting with her friends, taking in the decor for the holiday, listening to the off key singing she tried to relax. She was glad that for once Carver had some of his old spark back. He was too young to be dealing with the mess they were in. He should be working in the Lothering guard, and trying to woo farmer’s daughters or tavern maids during his off time.

She wanted to have fun, let loose, instead she checked corners, suspicious shadows, noticed and observed people she felt were paying too close attention to her group, she anticipated trouble. Mercedes knew she was a buzz kill, hated that her friends spent more time trying to include her in the merriment than have a good time themselves.

Maybe she wouldn’t mind so much if it was Anders attempting to engage her in conversation, in anything really. An entire evening of pretending not to watch each other, quick glances, shy blushes, and endless distance between them. He was kind, supportive, but so certain he could never be good enough for her. He might be right, but damn if she wasn’t ready to throw caution to the wind and give them a chance.

She caught him looking again, piercing eyes making her warm from the inside. Hawke considered taking matters into her own hands and speaking to him when a patron, a woman she recognized from the clinic, approached. She recalled the lady’s soft, dark hair, soft voice and sweet smile. She would be grateful, uncomplicated, perfect for Anders. He gave himself too much credit for the collapse of any hypothetical coupling. She had just as much baggage as he did, and less experience creating meaningful relationships. It was probably a good thing he was so weary about the formation of even a tentative friendship, too much tension, instant sparks, and apparently not the kind he was willing to deal with.

Maker, she felt foolish. The spirit of the season must have scrambled her normally sensible thought process. She excused herself from the table, collecting her belongings, and pausing to let Carver know she was heading home. Fenris politely offered to see her home, but Hawke declined reassuring him even Kirkwall’s thugs took a day off for Santinalia. Wrapping her cloak tightly around her body and pulling her hood up, she stepped out into the night.

He noticed the moment she left. Felt the void her presence left behind in a way that shouldn’t have been possible. He seemed to always know where she was when they were in the same room, and the shock of her missing always struck him to the core. Mercedes Hawke didn’t know him, but offered aide without question in what could have been a much worse situation when he finally tracked down Karl. She was loyal and fierce when she needed to be, kind and gentle when she helped in his clinic, and stunning. Maker was she breathtaking. And he was a fool.

He politely removed himself from the conversation from the Lowtown woman offering more than thanks for his healing ministrations and hurried to catch up with Hawke. He knew a general direction, he’d never actually been to Gamlen’s home. He knew she hated when anyone referred to the house as hers. He often wondered if it was because she was embarrassed of it, or if she really just hated her Uncle that much, maybe someday they would be close enough he could ask.

Kirkwall almost looked clean, white snow covered the streets in a heavy blanket. Humble homes lit with cheer for the holiday made the night glow a soft gold. Anders had been on the run most of his life, except for the time in Amaranthine with Amell and the friends he made in the Wardens, he hadn’t spent much time noticing Santinalia. He never had the time to worry about celebrating when he was trying to survive away from the Circle. Nothing had changed, not really, but he found himself beginning to hope for something new.

Hawke’s form was ahead of him, hood pulled up over her long, dark hair, but he knew it was her. Head high, light tread, she swayed-not exaggerated like Bela-her movements were fluid and captivating.

“Mercedes,” he called out before he could stop himself, “wait!”

She paused and he was able to see the profile of her face. Her warm breath frosting in the night air blending with the light, casting a hazy fog. She looked ethereal in the festive light surrounding her, a clear sign he was a sap falling in love. “I do believe that is the first time I’ve ever heard you use my given name.” Her face flushed prettily, but it might just be the cold. “A true Santinalia miracle, one of my friends knows my name.”

He fell into step with her, delicate flakes of glittering snow glinting in the light landing on her deep crimson robes. “Of course I know it,” he scoffed.  “I just figured it would be safer to use in this moment. Two mages walking the dark streets alone, not the best time to bring attention to the city’s most prominent apostate.”

She grinned, elbowing him in the side in mock offense, “Don’t worry. I’m more than capable of keeping you safe.” She allowed a small tendril of lightning chase a streak of fire around her forearm dangerous gleam in her eyes. “We would make a pretty good team in a pinch.”

He followed the display of nature magic wind up her arm marveling at her abilities. “You said it yourself, ‘a team.’ Even you need someone to watch your back, keep you alive.”

“Volunteering to watch my back?” She chuckled, giving him a sideways glance, “You’d better be careful, I might take you up on that offer. It’s been a little too long in that department.”

“I can’t even imagine how,” he muttered looking down at his boots scuffing in the snow.

“What can I say,” she shrugged, “being a small, angry apostate doesn’t lend itself well to companionship.” The comment cut, he knew it was directed at him for the many times he refused her attentions. She paused at the base of the steps leading to Gamlen’s home, piercing him with a hard stare from her chocolate colored eyes, shifting slightly as if trying to make a decision. She began in a low-smoky voice, “I have something for you, but I’m not sure about it anymore.” Now almost a whisper she continued, “It might be presuming too much.”

Anders was stunned. She had a gift for him. Something that made her nervous from the looks of it. He felt hyper aware of everything going on around him, the numbing cold, light snow swirling around her, warm glow on her cheeks, eyes cast down in a sweet, shy way he’d never seen from her. “It’s been a very long time since I’ve had someone to get me gifts, much less for Santinalia.”

“We can’t have that,” she smiled warmly, decision made, “come on inside. Pretty sure Uncle Gamlen is gone so you won’t have to deal with that mess.”

“And your mother?”

“Why, serrah, are you worried to be alone with little ol’ me?”

“Maybe I’m worried for your reputation. I’m a dashing mage, and if I’ve read Varric’s novels correctly, you are supposed to swoon and fawn over me under a mistletoe you’ve strategically hidden.”

“Maker,” she gasped, “I knew I forgot something! I guess you can’t have your present. I am unprepared.”

“Quiet you. Let’s go inside before I freeze. It’s cold out here and I’m not as good maintaining fire spells as you. I will catch my death since your healing spells leave a lot to be desired.”

“Making it personal are we?” she arched her brow. “It’s a long walk to Darktown, sir healer. I would hate to see you tossed out and miserable in the cold.”

“I think we both know you wouldn’t do that,” he replied softly, searching her face for some sign that he was being too familiar. For her to be reasonable since he could not.

“No,” her face serious, “I wouldn’t.”

“You’re too nice.”

She laughed, “Not nice enough. You better believe I’m going to tell Varric you read his books.”

“I take it back, you’re the worst.”

“I know,” she smirked. “Come inside before I change my mind. No mistletoe traps, I promise.” she motioned her head in the direction of the door.

He debated continuing the banter, letting her know that a Santinalia kiss wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen, but that might be pushing his luck. He followed her into the house, thankful that she was allowing him to be with her when she could be with literally anyone else.

Urban Dictionary defines rarepair as “A ship or pairing that not many people ship or is very rare to find fanfiction and fanart of. Typically happens within small fandoms or with minor characters.” So what’s your favourite Final Fantasy VII related rare pair? Do you have more than one? Here’s a chance to showcase them and help them move up from being rare! Not all parts of the pairing have to be from FFVII, and you don’t have to do the same pairing or group for the whole week! Below we have a list of prompts for this year. Feel free to be as creative with those as you want to, and take your time working on your entries, but please don’t forget to post them on the right date if you can. (But remember, no matter how late it’s better than never!)
