Jamie wrestles with the impossibility of it. He reaches out to touch her, very lightly, his fingers drawing down her face, brushing back the waves of hair from her temple to cheek, tracing the line of her jaw.
Brianna’s face cracks and the tears she had been holding back spill down her cheeks in a flood of relief. She falls into Jamie’s arms, weeping, overwhelmed, letting out everything -- the nervousness of meeting him, her exhaustion from travel, the traumatic event from last night.

She sees -- Jamie sitting on a bench. Her eyes focus on Jamie’s face then shift to the right and for a split second she thinks she’s hallucinating. But she’s not -- sitting next to Jamie is Brianna.
Claire has no time to even think about it before Brianna is in her arms, and Claire is almost knocked off her feet, both literally and figuratively.

Chardonnay Day
On Chardonnay Day, which is celebrated annually on the Thursday before Memorial Day in the U.S., and the Thursday before the last Monday in May in other parts of the world, we are focusing on one of the best white wines in history. This year, it falls on May 25. Chardonnay is a grape variety used in producing Chardonnay white wines which are considered to be one of the most refined-tasting white wines and a winemaker’s favorite. It is created from the crossing of two of the most prestigious grape varieties — Pinot noir and Gouais blanc. This holiday is a social media event that started slightly over a decade ago, encouraging people across the world to add some Chardonnay flavor to their lives.
History of Chardonnay Day
Wine lovers across the world come together to celebrate a special variety of wines today that is highly valued by wine connoisseurs and winemakers across the globe. Thats right, we are talking about none other than Chardonnay!
An interesting fact to note about the main attraction today, as well as many other grape-variety-titled wines, is that its name actually belongs to the grape variety used in wine production. This means that, in this case, Chardonnay is a grape variety used in the production of white wine, rather than a name of a wine brand.
It is green-skinned in color, hailing from the Burgundy wine region of eastern France. Chardonnay is a winemaker’s favorite because of its neutral taste which provides a wide range of creative possibilities. It is also a terroir wine, meaning that its taste is highly influenced by the environmental conditions of where it is grown.
In cooler climates, Chardonnay can present a taste of apple, pear, or green plum, while its flavors become more citrus, melon, or even tropical in warmer regions. This top-tier grape variety can also differ in taste due to the application of oak and other fruit flavors in its fermentation or vinification methods.
Chardonnay is said to have originated from a crossing of the Pinot noir and nearly extinct Gouais Blanc grape varieties. It gained massive popularity in the late 1900s, and growing Chardonnay is now considered a right of passage to new winemakers across the world.
Chardonnay Day was created by Rick Bakas to boost sales in the wine industry after the bank crisis of 2008. It was meticulously slotted around National Wine Day and the Thursday before Memorial Day to keep up the celebratory spirits.
Chardonnay Day timeline
1600s A New Flavor
The first written mentions of Chardonnay are discovered.
1976 A New World Honor
New World Chardonnay is rewarded in the famous Paris wine tasting tour.
1980s Well-Deserved Popularity
Chardonnay gains massive popularity in the wine industry.
2010 A Day For Chardonnay
Rick Bakas creates Chardonnay Day as a social media event.
Chardonnay Day FAQs
Is there a Chardonnay red wine?
As much as we would love to get this grape variety in all the flavors possible, red is just not an option. The fruit itself comes only in the green-skinned white variety and can only be used to produce white wine, or added to create bubbly wine.
Is Chardonnay dry?
Chardonnay in itself is used to create dry white wine. However, its taste may vary due to terrier, oak, or vinification methods. Therefore, it may also be used to create other sweet white wine variants or sparkling wine like Champagne.
What country grows the most Chardonnay?
France is the top producer of Chardonnay, with over 44,000 hectares planted annually. In fact, Chardonnay is the second most planted grape variety in the country, coming second to Ugni blanc. Coming in a close second in terms of production is the United States, and after that is Australia.
Chardonnay Day Activities
Drink some Chardonnay
Cook with Chardonnay
Visit a winery
Of course, the best and most logical way to celebrate a day such as this will be to have a taste yourself. This is an international celebration, so make sure you aren’t left behind. Pop open your favorite bottle of Chardonnay, or Chardonnay-flavored wine and have a glass. You can make it even more interesting by inviting friends and family over for a small wine tasting event.
This white wine variety is good for many things, and cooking just happens to be one of them. There are several recipes available online that include the use of white wine, and even more specifically, Chardonnay itself. So whether it's a seafood boil or a ribeye roast, make sure you are putting chardonnay to good use and sharpening your culinary skills while at it.
Another great way to get involved in Chardonnay Day is trying your hand at making some yourself. Book an appointment to visit a vineyard closest to you to see how this grape variety is grown and produced for wine. Make sure you bring friends and family in on it because the more the merrier.
5 Interesting Facts About Chardonnay
It’s one of the most popular grapes
It’s sparkles too
It is named after a village
The Queen made it popular
It’s a best-seller
Chardonnay is the second most widely planted grape variety for white wine in the world with 210,000 hectares worldwide.
Chardonnay is used in producing still wines, as well as sparkling and sweet wines.
This grape variety is named after the village of Chardonnay in the Mâcon region of Burgundy.
The wife of Emperor Charlemagne instructed white grapes to be planted in their Burgundy vineyard to stop her husband’s beard from getting stained by red wine.
Chardonnay is the best-selling wine in America with over 840,000 bottles consumed per year.
Why We Love Chardonnay Day
It’s the perfect excuse to drink wine
Chardonnay deserves it
It’s a social media event
It’s no surprise that our first reason to love this day is that it gives everyone a perfect reason to ease off on a glass or two of wine. Chardonnay Day offers a day free of judgments to sit back, relax and enjoy some wine.
Chardonnay is an old, very popular grape variety that has given us so many amazing bottles of wine for every palette — still, sparkling or sweet. It deserves a celebratory day all for itself, and this day is set aside just for that.
Chardonnay Day was started as a social media event, gaining massive popularity across platforms and regions of the world. We particularly love this quality as it makes celebrating super easy and accessible to people across the world.

It's Yana Toboso's birthday! (January 24, 1984)
Yana forgot her birthday this year...
... so there's even more reason to congratulate her and celebrate!
Some trivia:
She chose her penname "Yana Toboso" to indicate what kind of manga she wanted to create: Because there are so many mangas whose central themes are dreams, hope, friendship, and love, she wanted to make a manga whose focus is the opposite. "Yana" derives from "iya" (unpleasant, detestable, disagreeable; here: unpleasant/nasty child), and "toboso" is meant to signify importance: a "toboso" is a cavity in the frame of a door used as part of a pivot hinge; as doors wouldn't work without hinges, hinges are important objects. "Yana Toboso," therefore, is meant to mean "the hated/bad child is in the middle" (憎まれっ子がど真ん中にく る). (Character Guide, page 146)
Yana once stated that Ciel resembles her the most out of her characters. (Character Guide, page 147)
*cough* Obviously.
Exhibit A:
(Downstairs with Kuroshitsuji VII, from Volume 17)
(Chapter 76)
Exhibit B: The iconic Pancake Saga from 2018!
Yana's grandmother encouraged her to become a mangaka, and her mother pushed her to submit her work to a publisher when she was 20. Both have since passed away. (sources: akumadeenglish, The Japan Times)
She is a fan of the band L'Arc-en-Ciel (source). HYDE, the vocalist of that band, wrote the opening for Season 5. Yana was obviously very happy about that!
Yana contemplated making "fluffy spin-offs" to Kuroshitsuji, e.g., "a gourmet manga featuring the canteen of the Shinigami dispatch association HQ, or a manga where the Indian butler cooks curry or the black butler makes sweets, or where the servants make small discoveries." However, she dropped those ideas because her "fluffy concepts" kept becoming ominous after a few chapters. (source)
Kuroshitsuji was not meant to be set in 19th-century England from the beginning. Mr. K and the chief editor eventually suggested England as the setting. Yana, who did not know much about England (and could not find many materials early on; source: Downstairs with Kuroshitsuji II in Volume 2), especially not about 19th-century England, and did not believe the manga would be a hit anyway, then cooked up the wonderfully anachronistic Volume 1. Since then, Yana has become more knowledgeable about Victorian England, got a historical advisor (Rico Murakami) who also, sometimes, translates sources for her (source: Downstairs with Kuroshitsuji Special in Volume 15), has been (re-)learning English, and visited England twice. The manga has, thus, become significantly more historically accurate over the years. Still, as it's a fantasy manga, Yana likes to incorporate anachronistic elements for story purposes (e.g. Grim Reaper tech and possessions, Wolfsschlucht) anyway (or simply because she wants to; e.g. the idol groups, I suppose). Anachronisms have, thus, shifted from accidental to deliberate.
Sebastian's mobile phone will be forever iconic, but it has been retconned for over a decade now.
And The Wild Earl lost more than his head was cancelled when all TVs were thrown out of the continuity with the end of the Indian Butler Arc (TVs are last mentioned in Chapter 23).
May we learn many Victorian things alongside Yana in the next years too!
(Downstairs with Kuroshitsuji II, Volume 2)
And may she have a happy, restful birthday so that she doesn't forget it again^^' (And the best of health^^)

Tdlr; Rates of violence and homocides against older women (notable grandmothers) rising, a dual issue of children of and partners being domestically abusive, most notably sons. Mothers are less likely to call authorities on their own children for domestic violence or threats, which impacts this grizzly development. Warned "matricide of older women" and lack of awareness. Article from Australia but this issue is stated to be global.
Fourteen women over the age of 55 were allegedly killed in domestic violence-related homicides last year, according to a tally kept by the online feminist group Destroy the Joint. When the Australian Bureau of Statistics releases its data for the year, this number could well increase.
In 2023, according to ABS data, there were 28 women over the age of 55 allegedly killed in domestic violence related homicides, roughly a third of all such alleged homicides. Experts have called it a “silent crisis”: older women who are killed by family violence but whose deaths rarely get as much attention as those of younger women, and whose experiences do not figure sufficiently in government responses to violence against women. “There’s a matricide of older women [and] people aren’t even noticing, there’s no outcry. There’s silence,” says Catherine Barrett, director of Celebrate Ageing. “It’s just being missed.”
A Guardian analysis of government data has found that in the 10 years to 2023, nearly 200 women over the age of 55 were allegedly killed in family violence related homicides, suggesting older women could be at dual risk – from partners and from their children, especially their sons.
The rate of alleged domestic homicides in Australia has more than halved in the past 30 years, from 0.71 deaths per 100,000 in 1992-93, to 0.3 deaths per 100,000 in 2022-23. However, the rate at which older women are allegedly killed in domestic homicides has not fallen consistently. In the past 10 years, the rate of women aged over 55 killed in family violence homicides has reached 0.7 deaths per 100,000 (the same rate for all women 30 years ago) three times – in 2017, 2018 and 2023.
The problem is a global one. In England and Wales, the number of women killed by sons has risen since 2016, after remaining stable for decades. There was also a rise in the number of grandmothers killed by their grandsons, according to the Femicide Census, co-founded by Clarrie O’Callaghan and Karen Ingala Smith.
Lee says that while every family violence homicide is a tragedy, some deaths are given more attention than others, with the media and general public often focusing on the deaths of younger, attractive white women, while the deaths of “women who are marginalised … don’t get highlighted”. “The invisibility and the marginalisation of First Nations women [and] older women means that they remain invisible even when they’re killed.”
One of the main factors, Lee says, is that domestic violence is often considered primarily a problem for younger women so services are often geared towards them. That means older women may not see a family violence service as one that can help them.
“When we talk about violence against women, it’s always a younger woman fleeing with two little kids hanging around her knees. You rarely see any commentary about all the women who grow old with violence, who live with, maybe, sons who are violent. They are really invisible.”
Barrett says sometimes, after a violent relationship breaks down between a man and his partner, the man will move back in with his parents – particularly if he has mental health or addiction problems – and continue to perpetrate violence there. The problem has only increased, she says, in light of the cost-of-living crisis.
“The mothers are not reporting their sons … because this is their son, and it’s shame on the family, and they’re worried about his mental health. “We’ve got this perfect storm, which is: a cost-of-living crisis, a mental health crisis, sons moving in with their mothers, and no one’s talking to mum, or she doesn’t see a service that could actually help.” What’s needed, say both Lee and Barrett, is a life stages approach that addresses the different ways family violence can affect older women.
