broke: Jesus never felt attraction to anyone because lust is a sin and he was sinless

woke: Jesus and Judas were gay for each other

bespoke: Jesus was in a polycule with all of the disciples (because love isn’t fucking sinful!) but Judas isn’t as poly as he thought he was and desperately wants Jesus to go exclusive with him. Jesus just wasn’t built monogamous. Misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and betrayals ensue and then they both die about it

I've been thinking a lot about how I would've directed an actor playing Jesus if I had been in charge on a production, because it's so difficult. You've got a Jesus who, if you follow the premise that Judas puts forward in Heaven on their Minds, is a hedonistic, callous man who has lost his cause and indulges in the crowd. The Swedish Arena Tour (2014) uses this angle. Something that that production does, which you of course must do, is give him a realization at around Simon Zealotes that the crowd is too violent and that Judas was right.

Other productions make Jesus just a calm, smiling man through the whole play, who suddenly erupts with mean and "selfish" lyrics. This has always given me pause. There are two main issues I have with this interpretation. The first one is as mentioned, that his lyrics seem discordant with his general demeanor. My second issue it that the interpretation is boring and makes Jesus a static character, and it is bad theatre. I saw the current Norwegian production, and Jesus was unfortunately boring to watch because they went with this angle.

I, therefore, find it so weird that so many productions go with the second version. I think it is because they are lazy cowards who don't think about how they want to portray their characters in a way that makes sense. They know how Jesus is from the Bible and general culture, and don't think anymore about it. I think that is a real shame. That is the beauty about JCS, that you have to interpret the characters. You have to strike the balance in Jesus between hedonistic and pious, and explore Judas and his dilemma, his anger, and his frustration. If you wanted to show a musical where you didn't have to think, you could show Phantom of the Opera.

The difficulty of interpreting Jesus is striking the balance between these two versions of the character. (If you want to give it a single thought when putting on the show). I like the balance in JCS 2000. They have out thought into how Jesus should be, and I find the his indifference to Judas during Heaven on their Minds intriguing.

(I don't have any credentials or experience, with theatre, I just love JCS, and I am tired of not seeing it done justice)

1973- you’re doing okay! You probably have cuddle puddles with your friends and a SO that’s on the same page as you. Or you just don’t like/need touch all that much (and that’s okay)

2012 Arena - you think a lot about the contact that could have been huh? A good hug will fix you. Also you really want to brush someone’s hair.

2012 Bway - you might have friends that do like to snuggle but their schedules aren’t flexible enough for this to be a regular thing. If you have a SO, their love language is not physical touch. You want to give and receive affection so much it hurts. You’re frustrated but if you put the work in this can be resolved.

2014 Swedish - You are Grizabella belting “TOUCH ME” to anybody in earshot but if they actually approach you either scamper away or get into the most toxic relationship of your life at earth shattering speed. The inevitable breakup is very messy. You have trust issues. Maybe unpack why that is.

i think ola salo jesus is the most accurate jesus to me personally in the sense that he's just some guy doing weird shit getting pushed around in a shopping cart but at some points he just makes that messiah™ face and it's fucking terrifying dude he was literally just now a regular dude and the next second he turns into the first thing you see after you die

Due to the slight changes in the lyrics of the plot of the 2014 version, I understand the story better and like it more. JCS always has a charm that makes me want to watch all versions. Unfortunately, I cannot find some versions.

I finally watched Swedish Christ Superstar

Remember how I did a whole deep dive into the 2018 one? Yeah well, I was gonna try to do that with this version, but it is so unbelievably, completely, utterly, insanely unhinged that I just had to have my post about it match the energy. So without further ado, here are my literal first reaction notes to Jesus Christ Superstar (2014 Swedish Arena Tour).

Overture-

• Ooh the stuttering guitar is so metal

• Love the outfits, give me more apocalyptic leather headbanging nonsense

• Love how the choreo goes with the music rather than pure immediate chaos

• Admittedly the orchestra could be a bit better, but not terrible

• The shopping cart is my favorite character

• This feels almost interpretive

• Ok. Jesus is hot

• Draculacore

• Is he orgasming?

• I think that's an appropriate tone to be set

• I will say, I like productions with more color, but I see the style they're going for and I don't dislike it

Heaven on their minds-

• I like how they translated the lyrics to sound good in Swedish

• Also gives extra context and connotation to the words

• Love judas' mesh top!

• Really good singer wow

• This is how the song is supposed to be sung!!!

• I like boys with long hair hehehehe

• Symbolic that jesus is sleeping while judas is trying to get him to listen. Shows how closed off and resigned to his fate he was

• And also how no matter how hard judas tried he would never really be heard

• The subtitles said fuck? Lol

• I seriously love this guy's voice

What's the buzz/Strange thing mystifying-

• A bit faster rendition that's neat

• Interesting how judas is participating in the fray

• It's so nice to see his character happy for once though

Simon zealotes/poor jerusalem-

• Ooh it's a fight

• The ladies are sangin and dancin 💃

• THEY SAID FUCK AGAIN

• Well okay I'm just gonna give up on the notion that this play will be family appropriate in any manner, it's better that way anyway

• Pretty cool how the choreo is militaristic, as well as the costuming

• They way Simon is pronounced 😃

• I am unilingual my brain is incapable of not making a joke about that

Pilates dream-

• Love pilates robe, very pretty

• Ok but the sparkly suit is better

The temple-

• Fuck counter: 3

• They have a bit more speaking in this version which I really don't mind

• The lyrics make it really clear how the crowds used their connection to God to justify their actions, an issue which is still prevalent today

• Annas shaking that tail go off

• Jesus jumpscare

• He called it "A whorehouse" 💀

• The beggars all have little hand lights, that creates a really cool effect

• Wow the music got really fast

I don't know how to love him-

• The apostles throwing shade at judas and planning to blame him in the gospels 😙🤌

Gethsemane-

• Ok I'm gonna try to be serious for this once

• So far pretty good

• The lyrics are hitting the important parts of the song I feel

• HE GOT THE NOTE!

• Pretty damn good

• My bias still lies with Neeley but that wasn't gonna change really

• I like how he made the g5 actually part of the song rather than separating it. This whole performance is actually very natural and easy to watch

• The last verse goes so incredibly hard

• Literally the only part of this play I'd seen before

• Okay that's just. So romantic. JESUS kissed JUDAS! What a twist!

• "Yeah we know you're 'hot'" I mean 😏
