I know expecting Congress to get anything right these days is like expecting to see a triple rainbow in the Arctic, but if we could just get sticky, scratchy, awful cardboard sleeves for physical media discs illegalized, that would just be lovely!

LOST MEDIA: Gorillaz - Plastic Beach Web Games
I come to you tonight with one request: I want help in tracking down the Plastic Beach point-and-click adventure game from the Phase 3 (2010-2012) Gorillaz website.
In 2010, coinciding with the release of their third studio album, British virtual band Gorillaz gave their website a huge overhaul, including the release of several new flash games. The centerpiece was a point-and-click adventure game (untitled, usually just referred to as "Plastic Beach") in which the player was able to explore the island of Plastic Beach, similar to the games available on earlier websites where the player was able to explore Gorillaz HQ Kong Studios.
Along with this game were a few others: Escape to Plastic Beach, a three chapter long action/adventure game (the third chapter of which cost €1.50 to play, and was available both for PC and iPhones.) Just recently the developer, Matmi, hinted at trying to re-release these, but they went silent regarding it and nothing has come of it so far.
There were also two smaller Flash titles, Submatronic and Gorillaz Fishing. Not entirely sure what these two entailed but they were listed on the website and, like the adventure game and Escape are not playable via the Wayback Machine nor are they archived elsewhere.
From my research, it seems the website had some kind of DRM software that the older websites (which have been archived over at zombiehiphop.xyz) didn't, since the Plastic Beach game used full tracks from the album and EMI was worried about piracy. Before anyone suggests it like was done in other places where I've asked about this, no, the game was not released on a CD or DVD. Because of this, all four games unique to the Plastic Beach era website are lost. The iPhone port of Escape to Plastic Beach was also removed from the App Store years ago, and as such is also completely lost.
As of right now, all that still exists are low-quality videos of the adventure game in action, a few screenshots, and a handful of Flash files I've dug up from the Wayback Machine.
The loss of this game represents not just a loss for Flash preservation, but a huge loss for Gorillaz fans as it was an integral element of the story of the Plastic Beach era. Without it and much of the other content from the old website, the already incomplete story that Jamie Hewlett and the rest of the Zombie Flesh Eaters team were trying to tell lives on almost wholly through secondary accounts. While recordings exist, it is simply not the same as having access to the full experience.
I ask of you all to please consider my words and help me do something about this, instead of wallowing in hopelessness as it seems the community has been doing for oh so long now.
Thank You.

Muse Retrospective Interviews [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)] - Matthew Bellamy (July 2003)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“A person's life is made up of things on various levels, including the past, and I think the music that is born from the unification of these things can be said to be the purest form of expression.”
After the chaos caused by their debut with “Showbiz” and the success and breakthrough of “Origin of Symmetry,” the three members of Muse have finally been able to sit down and work on a new album. This is an official interview conducted in London just before the release of the album. The interview was conducted with Matthew, Dom, and Chris individually, in that order, and their confident attitude is well conveyed.
Interview and text by Kaoru Abe
Matthew Bellamy “The last two albums and the time spent on them have been a journey for me, so I thought it was time to punctuate and take a break.”
London, July 2003. The intense heat wave, later dubbed “the most destructive weather disaster in European history,” affected the UK, which does not need air conditioning, and even Muse's private studio, which was designated as the interview site, was in no condition for a proper talk unless all the windows were fully open. Despite this, Matthew Bellamy appeared with a cool face and was in a completely relaxed mood, playing his old piano mischievously during a chat before the interview. There was none of the tense atmosphere that I had felt when I interviewed him in London two years ago, nor was there the sense of innocence that I had felt on my first visit to Japan, but rather, there was a smooth, freshness of heart that had been peeled off.
The studio, located in a quiet residential area of East London, was a converted flat that no one would have guessed was owned by Muse, and it exuded a sense of everyday life that was far removed from his rock star image. When we entered the studio, I honestly could not believe that this was where the basic idea for “Absolution” was born, but Matthew's words, as he began to talk to us from his comfortable position on the old sofa, told us that a flat state of mind for the three of us was the key to the album's production. The fact that the interview took place in a private studio was also a factor and a smart move on the part of the band, as it allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of how the making of the album began with a return to their pre-debut selves.
The idea was born in the studio, and the album was then brought to fruition while traveling to studios in Ireland and Los Angeles, and through the whole process, the band seems to have untangled itself from the tangle brought about by its busy and extraordinary schedule. And when those tangles are completely untangled, the completed “Absolution” will naturally become close to the soul of Muse and to Matthew's soul. In this sense, it is self-evident that the album takes on a more personal color, both in terms of the band and Matthew, as evidenced by Matthew's fast-talking and eloquent words.
—The 2-CD “Hullabaloo Soundtrack” consists of the B-side collection of the singles released last year (2002) and the live performance. What was the meaning behind the subtitle “soundtrack”? Matthew: I named it that because the live part is the soundtrack aspect of the live DVD “Hullabaloo - Live at Le Zenith”. The DVD is sort of like a documentary film about Muse, a live band.
—Did you feel like you were resetting your mind by putting together the “past” of your B-side collection and the “present” of your live show? Matthew: Between “Showbiz” and “Origin of Symmetry,” I had been working nonstop, with no personal time at all, and at some point I realized that the two albums and the time spent on them were a journey for me. I felt it was time to hit a punctuation point, and that a new approach was needed, so I took some time off before moving on to the third album. So, as you say, the time leading up to the third album was a turning point for us.
—The double A-side single “Dead Star/In Your World” (2002) marked a transitional period for the band. Matthew: I would say it was more a part of the live DVD than a transitional period. We knew beforehand that those two songs would not be on the third album.
—I found it surprising that you covered “Can't Take My Eyes Off You” (by Frankie Valli) in “Dead Star/In Your World”. Matthew: We have released covers of “Feeling Good” (Nina Simone) and “Please Please Please” (The Smiths) in the past, but we have definitely dared to take songs that are different from our own musical style, including this one, in order to do something that Muse cannot do. By doing so, we may find a new direction, and there is a possibility of doing pop music in the future, so the covers are more of an experiment than just enjoying our favorite songs. Incidentally, “Can't Take My Eyes Off You” was inspired by a TV show called “Re:covered” (BBC Choice), which featured covers and original songs.
“My songwriting process starts with the sound first, then the lyrics, then the title, and so on, but I usually write down bits and pieces of phrases that come into my head, rather than being influenced by the sound.”
—The downloadable single “Stockholm Syndrome” is the prologue to “Absolution.” Why did you choose the title of the song, which is a self-brainwashing mental situation for the weak? Matthew: My songwriting process starts with the sound first, then the lyrics, then the title, and so on, but I usually write down bits and pieces of phrases that come into my head, rather than being influenced by the sound. In the case of “Stockholm Syndrome,” the title came from the overall picture of the lyrics, a kind of contradictory mental situation in which one is in an oppressive environment and yet feels a sense of happiness, but I did not want to give it a very specific meaning. So, depending on the listener, it could be taken as social oppression, domination by God, and relationships between humans. …… I did not want to give a specific meaning to the title. For the writer, it is just a vague image (laughs).
—What did you have in mind when creating the sound for “Stockholm Syndrome”? Matthew: I think it is basically a traditional rock track, but I was conscious of the dynamic changes. I think we were able to deviate from the typical rock flow by not softening it up at the chorus and adding a more intense rock element. In that sense, it might be similar to a “New Born”-like development. It's like a tsunami that crashes down with more waves on top of it.
—The recording of the album “Absolution” not only took a long time, but was also recorded in different environments, in England, Ireland, and Los Angeles. This must have kept the inspiration fresh. Matthew: The production started in this studio (the band's private studio). After we had the basics down here, we flew to Ireland, where we recorded strings and other orchestral sounds. I was actually under a lot of stress when I was working in London, so I went to Ireland for a change of environment. Unlike London, where there are many people, including people I know, there is really nothing around the studio, so I was able to concentrate on the music and work on it in a more personal time frame. We recorded the drums in a swimming pool, and since the place itself was like a farm, we experimented with sounds using farming tools that were lying around (laughs). After that, we flew to Los Angeles for mixing, where I was able to record some nice vocal harmonies. I quite like it myself, but don't you think it's good too? (laughs)
—As a lover of “Pet Sounds” (Beach Boys), I was also impressed by the exquisite harmonies. Matthew: That analogy is funny (laughs). I'll tell Chris later because I like him. We actually recorded it in the same studio where “Pet Sounds” was made. Maybe it's because we recorded it in the same place…… We may indeed have something in common in that eerie atmosphere (laughs).
—What are the musical benefits of having two opposite production environments, London and Ireland? Matthew: When you work in one studio all the time, you get too used to the sound. When you listen to the finished product again, it sounds monotonous or …… Even if you think the sound is good there, it often sounds boring when you play it in another studio. In that sense, it made a lot of sense to change the location. If the concept or structure of an album is focused on one thing, it is possible to settle down in one studio, but for an album like this, which is a collection of various themes, I thought it would be better to record in different places to give it more diversity in many ways. I thought it would be possible to add diversity in many ways if we recorded in different places.
—Regarding the diverse themes of the album, did the timing of its production coincide with the attack on Iraq by British and U.S. forces have any influence? Matthew: The songs themselves were mostly written before the Iraq war, so it didn't directly affect me, but the timing of the production coincided with the war, and I often witnessed massive protests at the time. So I think it affected my mood. Even though the song was already written, it gradually took on a different meaning. When the lyrics happened to coincide with the social situation of the time, the meaning was pulled toward that feeling…… That said, I never intended the songs to have a political meaning. This album focuses on feelings and moods, so for example, it depicts things like our own helplessness and the misuse of faith.
—Is this feeling or mood reflected in the title “Absolution,” which means “absolution”? Matthew: The powerlessness and misuse of faith that I mentioned earlier makes up about 40% of the album, and the other 60% is more personal. The (Iraqi) war also gave me a chance to think about the atmosphere of the times that it created, and it made me think that the trivial things around me were very valuable…… In retrospect, perhaps I was explaining the chaos within me by making music. The process of giving an easy-to-understand narrative to what I was feeling was the making of this album, and in doing so, I wanted to show that there are more important things in the world than what we see on a daily basis. It was also a very valuable experience for the band to be able to do that.
“I feel spiritual when I'm playing the piano, and when I'm playing the guitar, I feel like I have some sort of animal instinct within myself.”
—I think the persuasiveness of the musical narrative has been deepened by giving order to the chaos, not by expressing it as chaos, but by giving it a counterbalancing order in the form of a melody. I think this was also a major change this time around. Matthew: I think it was a very natural change for us, not a conscious one. First of all, by not doing anything for a while after last year's Reading Festival, we got ourselves back to where we were before “Showbiz”. When we started the band, we were just making music and playing for ourselves, but as we started to release our work, and as it was accepted by more and more people, not only the situation around us changed, but we changed as well. I think “Origin of Symmetry” was a clear representation of the chaos that came with such a change. This time, we had no schedule at all, and the time we spent on making the album allowed us to feel very free. We were able to change ourselves again and face the music with a fresh mindset, as if we were starting a new band. In fact, the last few months we have been living the kind of life that most people would do at home, and it has been a great opportunity for the members to get to know each other. So if there has been a change in our sound, it is because we have changed.
—It's a real “New Born” feeling. Matthew: (laughs) You could say that.
—As for Matthew himself, it seems that you have become more active as a pianist as well as a guitarist. I have heard that you have a lot of respect for (Sergei) Rachmaninoff, but was he a big influence on the piano you played this time? Matthew: Originally, I had in mind the piano sounds of early to mid Romanticism and early contemporary music (Franz Liszt and (Sergei) Prokofiev, for example), but in “Butterflies and Hurricanes,” I wanted to mix the dynamics of a piano concerto with those of a three-piece band. By doing so, I think we were able to express the strength of the emotional impact.
—What is the difference between a guitarist and a pianist in your mind? Matthew: I'm not naturally one to settle on one thing, so I tend to sing, play guitar, and play piano (laughs). But I have to do this and that, so I guess I'm at an average level in all areas now (laughs). When I play the piano, I feel spiritual, and when I play the guitar, I feel aggressive, like I have some kind of animal instinct. Interestingly, the moment I move to the piano after playing the guitar for a long time, I feel as if I am in heaven. I can write a song within two or three minutes of playing the piano, but on the other hand, when I play the piano for a long time and then move to the guitar, a tremendous amount of energy wells up from within, and music is born from there as well.
—The music of Muse, which burns from within, seems to give solid form to something spiritually formless. Matthew: I don't often listen to what I make myself, but when I listen to other people's music and watch them play, I feel a sense of security, or at least a good sense of certainty, about my own music. Maybe that's why I continue to play music. The reason I like classical music so much is that no matter how long after a composer's death, the music remains strong. In that sense, I feel a spirituality in my music, and that is something I would like to continue experimenting with in the future.
—What you just said reminded me of the words of the American writer Don DeLillo (“White Noise,” “Underworld,” etc.), who said, “The deeper you go into expression, the more naturally you are led back into your own consciousness.” Matthew: That is an interesting point. Especially in this case, it was a good opportunity for us to reevaluate ourselves and accept where we are now while making the album. I don't really know how we've changed. I can't remember what I was like before, so I can't compare it to what I am now (laughs).
—As for who you are now, I overheard it during the chat before the interview, but how does love influence the album? Matthew: There are a few songs that do. For example, “Falling Away With You” is about the chaos of love, but in a good way. And “Endlessly” is a straightforward love song.
—You never wrote a love song before? Matthew: I tried to write a love song around the time of “Showbiz,” but “Endlessly” is the first proper love song I've written (laughs). Even with previous songs, even though they had elements, they weren't all love songs.
—Finally, what does the album title “Absolution” mean? Matthew: Actually, I was more conscious of the meaning of “purity” than “absolution”. A person's life is made up of things on many different levels, including the past, but I think the music that comes from bringing those things together is a pure form of expression. I don't know how other people see it, but that's how I feel.
—I am looking forward to seeing how this work will be expressed in a live performance. Matthew: I already have a lot of ideas, and I would like to do something involving animation at some point. The first step would be to make a video, and then build the stage from there. I think it would be a good idea to include other musicians, such as a choir, and I'm looking forward to it myself.

The heavenly yard blog infomine, part 6: More Songs, and the Daughter of Evil Musical (no, not that one)
Some more interesting stuff in this one--starting to get closer to mothy conceptualizing Evillious as we know it, though of course we're not quiiiite there yet.
2 October 2009 ~ 25 February 2010
---October 2009---
2nd
-mothy releases Heartbeat Clocktower and To You of Few Words on Piapro.
-He releases a few more Evils Theater CDs by popular demand.
11th
-More Daughter of Evil on MikuMoba
19th
-Daughter of Evil is getting a chibi figurine!
-mothy shares some clips of two new songs he's working on. The links are defunct so I'm not sure which ones they are.
---November 2009---
8th
-mothy has been working on quite a bit, but a lot of it involves things he's keeping under wraps for the time being, so he hasn't had much to blog about. he's working on another song in addition to the previous two he shared clips of, and considering soliciting illustrations for it on Piapro (I think based on that, and the timing, that this one is Tailor of Enbizaka).
-Someone mentions an unofficial performance of his work in the comments section. He thanks them for the notice and lets them know they're more than welcome to do so, but has to keep the actual announcements on his blog limited to works he's officially affiliated with considering the sheer scope of derivative works being made at the time.
11th
-I was correct, the song he's soliciting illustrations for is Tailor of Enbizaka.
-The recruitment system has apparently changed since he last used it, so he's not sure if he'll get the same turnout as before.
19th
-mothy announces an upcoming play adaptation of Daughter of Evil, ~Gemini of Charm~ (Charming Gemini? Not sure I like this translation in hindsight).
-This is notably not the first of its kind, but it is the first one that he's involved with in some capacity. He hints at the play revealing content that wasn't in the songs.
-Note, the link to the website still works.
-There's a comment that asks if he's ever going to make songs with UTAU. He says that while he is interested, he doesn't have the time to learn how.
28th
-Daughter of Evil has 1 million views!
-In other news, there are plans to release a DVD version of the upcoming DoE musical.
-Meanwhile voting for Conchita, moonlit bear, Re_birthday, and Screws,Gears, etc is going to start up for entering them into JOYSOUND in December.
---December 2009---
4th
-Daughter and Servant of Evil are both going to be on the VocaloLegend CD.
-mothy has finished recruiting illustrations for Tailor, and is working on putting the video together.
8th
-mothy has uploaded Tailor!
16th
-Tailor has reached 2nd in the weekly rankings! And Clockwork Lullaby has reached 100,000 replays.
-mothy hopes to upload some more videos this month.
-in responding to a comment, mothy reveals he has difficulty participating in winter comiket because it conflicts with his day job.
25th
-Tailor has reached 100,000 views!
-mothy announces the tie-in soundtrack album he's put together for Gemini of Charm/the musical
27th
-In celebration of the Kagamine Twins' anniversary, mothy uploads the Velvet Mix versions of both Daughter and Servant of Evil to NicoNico (with illustrations from Piapro)
-mothy expresses plans to release a mini-album at VOCALOID Master 11.
29th
-mothy announces Regret Message is going to be in the Stardom3 album.
---January 2010---
1st
-mothy does a little retrospective on the songs that he released in 2009 in honor of the new year. I won't summarize all of it but some highlights:
-he had a lot of fun making Conchita, he didn't struggle with writing it like he does some of the other songs.
-he hadn't actually intended moonlit bear to be so dark.
-Heartbeat Clocktower is still just on piapro for now.
-his setting and concepts for Screws, Gears, and Pride is actually quite detailed, but he doesn't know if he'll ever get the opportunity to share any of it.
-he says he wrote "to you of few words" to himself, in a way, that he has to write songs like this every once in a while.
-he thinks he may have gone a little overboard on Tailor.
-Confirms again that Rin and Len are his favorite VOCALOIDS.
5th
-Re_birthday and Conchita have made it onto JOYSOUND. Voting is still ongoing for the others.
6th
-mothy uploads Daughter of White.
9th
-mothy thanks people for the comments on Daughter of White, noting he had to cut a very large amount of content for it even with how long the end result was.
-He also shares a few videos made by the illustrators that he was working with (Ichika and "The one who loves the Oni", You-ring and "Pretty Panties ☆ AkuMaRin", Suzunosuke and "Synchronicity", and Painter-Brioche with "Lonely Runner"
16th
-Daughter of White has topped the VOCALOID rankings.
-Meanwhile, mothy talks plans for VOCALOID Master 11, where he intends to release the Prelude to Forest album. He also talks about the big collab CDs that he's involved in (VOCALOlegend, Stardom, Supernova, etc).
-The musical date is also fast approaching. Mothy says that while the setting, character names, and general plot ideas come from him, the script itself was largely written by the theater company.
23rd
-Mothy reports back from the stage rehearsal of the DoE musical. He thinks they did a good job incorporating his ideas with their own original material. Asami Shimoda attended to (apparently she got a RinLen plushy(ies?) from Crypton.
-He advertises "elements", which is a--I think CD? Performance? of some kind that Shimoda was doing. The website's defunct now.
---February 2010---
2nd
-The DoE musical has premiered, mothy shares his thoughts.
-He liked it, thought it was written and performed well. It sounds like Josephine had an active role (like she does in the newer musical). As an audience member it was apparently very entertaining.
-As the author of the original work, he thought it was good as a stage play. There were a lot of deviations from his own story ideas (apparently the scriptwriter did this on purpose to make it stand on its own rather than trying to compete with mothy). mothy's thinking is that the adaptation should try to recreate the tone of the original, but keep in mind that stage performance and songs are two different styles of work, so it's understandable to pursue what works for stage itself. And that the differences where Daughter of White are concerned are only natural since that's a newer release that didn't exist when this was being written. They only had a basic summary of Clarith's character at the time (note--mothy shares the specific description he gave them, and it does mention her and Michaela by name).
-He makes clear that not all of the elements that show up in the musical but not the songs are original--that is, he gave them some story elements to use that weren't in the songs. He lists off the names of Riliane, Allen, Germaine, Kyle, Michaela, Elluka, Clarith, Chartette, and Ney as names that come from him specifically. And then the Three Heroes and whatnot. Though the characters who aren't in the songs are very different in the musical, like Chartette for example.
4th
Part 1
-(as a note, as mothy discusses the musical, he is also sharing pictures of himself with the cast of the musical, covering his face up with a logo of course)
-Continuing on the topic of the musical, there is a ton of plot mothy's come up with that hasn't made it into the "Akuno" songs. Some of these are spoilers. Mothy compiled all of these ideas during the collaboration, and now he's wondering what to do with them. He wants to share them in some fashion. He could make them into songs but that might take a while, and he wants to do more than just the "Akuno" series. This is something he hopes to work on this year.
Part 2
-Mothy announces that the musical's soundtrack CD has been released for purchase. Asami Shimoda has some vocals on it.
Part 3
-Mothy talks about Twiright Prank, which is the new song in the musical that he specifically wrote for it. He was nervous working on it because he's never written a song to someone else's specifications before, but it turned out okay. He explains the plot a little, and his plans to make a RinLen version (of course he demo-ed with RinLen but he didn't tune it or anything)
-He also missed the "Akuno" series showing up on CountdownTV (idk what that means)
Part 4
-Mothy is attending VOCALOID MASTER 11 on Sunday. It's his first time going alone, under the Heavenly Yard label. He will, as stated before, be selling the new album Prelude to Forest, as well as other stuff.
8th
-VOCALOID MASTER went well, as expected. Mothy sold out, but he'll be selling some things on consignment in the usual places. He'll also be selling at VOCALOID PARADISE 3 in March.
25th
-mothy announces he'll be releasing Full Moon Laboratory in March for the Supernova2 CD.
-Some comment replies--he gives permission to do derivative and parody works on NicoNico. He can't sell his works on Amazon because they're self-published. And so on.

what western media/music do u think the s62 would like ? (ur post abt izana liking mitski oh god help🥲🥲🥲)
Tumblr media
I'll be merging these asks. Music taste anon, I hope you see this 😭
Western music that I think S62 might like, with artists (warning: self-indulgent, literally just projected my music taste on some characters but hopefully they still match)
*I might make a separate post for Western media hmm
IZANA
➼ Izana’s favorite music normally falls under the indie and rock umbrellas. He’s partial to 80s-90s rock and alternative rock but enjoys some modern indie artists from time to time. I see that he canonically listens to Queen (though I’m not sure if he does love the band or just one song), so there’s that. Other artists he might listen to are The Rolling Stones, Muse, The Strokes, Aerosmith, The Smashing Pumpkins, Arctic Monkeys (insists he likes their pre-AM music, would make a face if you tell him your favorite Arctic Monkeys song is “Do I Wanna Know”) ... and Mitski..... (you know why)
➼ His favorite Mitski album is Bury Me At Makeout Creek by the way.
Get a feel of his music taste: The View From The Afternoon - Arctic Monkeys, Tonight, Tonight - The Smashing Pumpkins, Angie - The Rolling Stones
RAN
➼ Somewhat your mom/dad’s music taste. Probably one of those people who say older music’s better than new music. He’s a New Wave guy. Likes a lot of 70s-80s pop hits; some funk, soul, and disco music; with some alt indie bands sprinkled in. He’s fond of shoegaze because of its floaty and ethereal sound which makes him feel nostalgic and at peace. He also appreciates mesmerizing vocals and orchestral instrumentals, so I think he’d like Florence and Lana if he heard them.
➼ Artists he would probably like: ABBA, Prince, The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Lady Gaga (I think she was big in Japan + her songs probably played a lot in clubs + she was always doing something shocking and Ran liked that)
Get a feel of his music taste: Lullaby - The Cure, Heart of Glass - Blondie, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! - ABBA
RINDO
➼ He’s into R&B, soul, 90s rap like Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, and Ice Cube. That’s what you’d usually hear playing in his room while he’s chilling. He’d listen to DJs too, of course, but maybe to the more underrated ones. (I don’t know that many DJs so I’m not giving names) He shares Ran’s taste for Prince. As for some newer artists, I think he’d like Joji and Childish Gambino.
➼ Likes EDM but frowns upon the EDM of the early 2010s. He has pretty strong feelings about it. Never play The Chainsmokers in his presence or die.
➼ His and Ran’s music tastes overlap when it comes to indie/alternative artists. Both brothers act like snobs over it. Rindo actually buys and collects records (as you can see, he has a CD and DVD shelf in his room), searching for rare versions of his favorites and everything.
Get a feel of his music taste: You Know How We Do It - Ice Cube, Redbone - Childish Gambino, Pony - Ginuwine
SHION
➼ Metal, metalcore, punk rock, emo. Anything that includes loudness and screaming. Because of Rindo’s influence, he also got into some 90s hip hop himself. I think he’d enjoy the way someone like Eminem raps. He could never get into chill R&B though, and most pop songs are either too “happy” or too “sappy” for him and he just wants something that screams in rage most of the time.
➼ He’d enjoy Deftones’ Around The Fur album, as well as My Chemical Romance’s stuff, some Evanescence here and there (he’s had a crush on Amy Lee at some point), Bring Me The Horizon, Three Days Grace, Slipknot, and old Metallica
Get a feel of his music taste: Around The Fur - Deftones, Master of Puppets - Metallica, Na Na Na - My Chemical Romance
MOCCHI
➼ He likes hip hop/rap like Rindo so they often bond over that. Mocchi listens to both male and female rappers and will not hesitate to rap extremely explicit verses if urged. Others’ music tastes easily rub off on him, so Izana’s alternative rock, Mucho’s oldies, Shion’s metal, and Ran’s disco pop have all found a place in his playlists.
➼ The type of guy to have a Taylor Swift (he likes Back to December) or Britney Spears CD hidden somewhere in his room. Also got into One Direction at one point. If anyone asks, he’ll says it’s his girl’s or mom’s.
➼ Okay, not Western, but he listens to Kpop and Jpop and stans girl groups.
Get a feel of his music taste: No Diggity - Blackstreet, Family Affair - Mary J. Blige, Dilemma - Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland
MUCHO
➼ If Ran’s got the music taste of your mom, then Mucho’s got the music taste of your grandparents. His taste in oldies is a lot similar to Ran’s but goes further back in time. He enjoys the “classy” feel of most of these songs and the way these singers sing. His favorite genres are funk, soul, R&B, and some oldies pop.
➼ You rarely hear music playing in his house. But if you do, it might be Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bee Gees, The Carpenters, or Simon & Garfunkel.
➼ And as for some more modern artists: Coldplay, Hozier, and Silk Sonic. Would enjoy Lana del Rey’s style too, especially her Ultraviolence songs.
Get a feel of his music taste: How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees, Yesterday Once More - The Carpenters, Viva La Vida - Coldplay,
KAKUCHO
➼ Kakucho listens to music to relax. He usually likes to play music while he’s cooking, cleaning, or just idling around (though that’s rare). His taste is more of chill, easy listening. Izana and Rindo influenced him to like alt-indie, R&B, and rap as well.
➼ Kaku doesn’t “stan” artists. If you ask him who his favorite artist is, you would not get an answer. He’ll listen to anything that sounds good to him no matter what people think of it.
➼ That said, he’s the person Izana makes a face at for saying that his favorite Arctic Monkeys song is “Do I Wanna Know?”
Get a feel of his music taste: Tek It - Cafuné, Clouds -  BØRNS, Do I Wanna Know? - Arctic Monkeys

KOKIA in flashback - 2019
KOKIA continues her 20th anniversary celebrations in 2019. The DVD release Journey to Me compliments last year's retrospective Bird Watching in that it only covers her performances from the year before, so the anniversary that Bird Watching was leading up to. Her March concerts are fittingly called Graduation, as she graduated from the 20 years before, and looks towards the future.
On April 29, her 21th anniversary and thus the end of her 20th anniversary year, KOKIA releases  ALIVE - The live history -, her first live best-of album, with the limited first edition in an LP-sized jacket (it still has CDs in it, not an LP). For the first time, KOKIA holds a live stream today: her LINE Live, in which she performs and chats about the album ánd her first book, Happii ryoku ('happy power'). It's about child rearing, which KOKIA now has experience with as Leo is turning 3 years old this year. The theme kind of carries over as she also releases her first ever picture book, Mama no daijisan (My life with my precious), with text in both English and Japanese. Finally, she releases her second jazz album, Watching from Above vol. 2, once again featuring Leo on the cover.
KOKIA also brings back her 2016 concert LAYERS, although this time, she brings it over to Shanghai!

Album Reviews: Paul McCartney and Wings / Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs
Paul McCartney and Wings One Hand Clapping
I guess you could say I've written a bit about Sir Paul McCartney on this site (read here) and his former bandmates The Beatles (read here). I've gotten to cover his 2021 documentary series McCartney 3, 2, 1, I saw him live at Citi Field in 2009 and Fenway Park in 2022, and earlier this year I got to cover the 50th anniversary of the classic album Band on the Run from Paul McCartney and Wings. This week UMe is releasing an often-bootlegged but never officially released live album One Hand Clapping.
Tumblr media
album cover
In August 1974, when Wings were riding high with Band on the Run released in November 1973, they entered Abbey Road Studios to record both a TV concert documentary and a live album. For one reason or another the documentary and live album were never released. The band at the time was made up of Sir Paul, wife Linda on vocals and keyboards, the late great Denny Laine (1944-2023) on guitar, and new guitarist Jimmy McCulloch (1953-1979, a member of Wings from 1974-77), and drummer Geoff Britton (a Wing from 1974-75). The film and the live recording became a popular bootleg among fans mainly because it wasn't commercially released. In 2010, the doc was finally released on the bonus DVD of the Band on the Run Archive Collection release. Select tracks were also includes on the bonus disc of that collection as well. Select tracks have also surfaced on the bonus discs of McCartney and Venus and Mars. To mark the 50th anniversary of this, it is finally being released in various formats. The version I got to review is the digital stream of the Double-LP that includes a special 7" single with 6 additional bonus tracks not available on the CD or digital versions.

the late great Denny Laine at City Winery on 1/9/19
The thing with this album is much of it felt somewhat anticlimactic. I have the 2010 Band on the Run release that included the bonus DVD with the One Hand Clapping documentary. It was awesome and the band was in their prime. When I interviewed Denny Laine in 2019, he said Band on the Run was very significant to him. When I saw him at City Winery in Boston shortly after our interview he played much of that album as well. All of Disc 1 is from that special from the 2010 bonus DVD. Disc 2 gets into other live in-studio renditions, including some Beatle covers. But the real treasure that's been unearthed here is the 7" single on the vinyl edition that the band recorded in the backyard of Abbey Road Studios including The Beatles' "Blackbird" and covers of Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly hits. Wow! In the end, let's celebrate that this is finally being released and the extras that have never been heard before!

Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs Vagabonds, Virgins and Misfits
I've always considered guitarist Mike Campbell to be a secret weapon! In Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Petty was the singer and leader, but Campbell had so many memorable guitar solos. Campbell even played on Petty’s solo albums too. After Petty’s death in 2017, Campbell has been keeping busy. In addition to joining Fleetwood Mac in 2018, he formed his own band The Dirty Knobs, who now go by Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs. I got to review their 2020 debut Wreckless Abandon. Campbell actually formed the band while he was in The Heartbreakers but never recorded with them until that debut. Since then, they released a follow up in 2022 with External Combustion. Separate from Dirty Knobs, I was also lucky enough to get the 2022 live release Live at the Fillmore 1997 from the Heartbreakers and my album review was actually quoted on The Heartbreakers website for the album! But I digress. This week sees the release of the third album from The Dirty Knobs' Vagabonds, Virgins and Misfits.
Tumblr media
album cover
Tumblr media
new album cover looks a little like The Heartbreakers' "Don't Come Around Here No More" music video with Campbell 2nd from right front row.
Since the last album there's been some lineup changes. Drummer Matt Laug left to join AC/DC for their tour and was replaced by former Heartbreaker Steve Ferrone. Guitarist Jason Sinay was replaced by Chris Holt (Don Henley). They joined bassist Lance Morrison and singer/guitarist Campbell. This album also features appearances from Graham Nash, Lucinda Williams, Chris Stapleton and best of all former Heartbreaker Benmont Tench. That makes three Heartbreakers on one album!
This album's got that trademark blues-rock sound they delved into on the debut. It reminded me of ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Texas blues bands. Even though Campbell himself is a native of Florida, I heard more of a Southwestern vibe than a Southern vibe. There's some cool guests. The thing is, I wanted to like this album more than I did. Campbell is awesome and the band is tight, but it just felt like an album that was pretty good instead of pretty awesome. Maybe it's going to take a few more listens but I had high hopes.

***SPECIAL TIME TODAY, April 10, 1 PM PT, 4 PM ET***
In February, Facebook friend Kenneth Reaber played talk show Cupid and suggested I connect with Grammy-nominated guitarist, singer, and producer, Rick Vito, probably best known as a member of Fleetwood Mac as if that t’weren’t enough, he sold me with Rick’s tenure with Jackson Browne, alongside Kootch and Kunkel for a tour, with this video from ’82 to bring it home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2WkyiHL-n8&t=50s - babies!  Plus, his work with Bonnie Raitt, his legendary slide work with Bob Seger, and Rick later partnering with Mick Fleetwood to form the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band featuring Rick Vito. Shortly after the release of their CD, Blue Again, Rick was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award in the Best Traditional Blues category as both artist and producer. Not shabby, iffn’ you can git it.
His solo albums began with Atlantic in ’92, after which he began performing worldwide with his own band. He also appeared on hundreds of recordings by such legendary Rock & Roll and Blues Hall of Fame artists as John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, John Fogerty, Little Richard, Leon Russell, Boz Scaggs, John Prine, Delbert McClinton, Rita Coolidge, Roy Orbison, Roger McGuinn, Todd Rundgren, Maria Muldaur, and scores of others.
Rick is the recipient of the  W.C. Handy Blues Award for the song of the year, It’s Two A.M., by Shemekia Copeland, and his compositions have appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, most recently in multiple episodes of Blue Bloods.
A designer of Art Deco and Modernistic guitars, Rick Vito’s Soul Agent Signature model is currently available from Reverend Guitars. This represents the fourth edition of Reverend Signature models bearing Rick’s name and design features.
In 2020 Rick appeared alongside Christine McVie (in her final performance), Billy Gibbons, Pete Townsend, David Gilmour, Bill Wyman, John Mayall, and a host of other musical luminaries in Mick Fleetwood & Friends Celebrate the Music of Peter Green concert filmed in London, available on CD and DVD.
Recently, Rick signed with the Blue Heart Records. His rocking Christmas anthem, “I Was A Bad Boy This Year,” is featured on their 2023 “Jingle All The Way” holiday compilation CD, and his new album, “Cadillac Man” is available now and has been on heavy rotation in the Snicki Mobile.
Looking forward to getting to meet and know this crazy talented, and I can already tell, fun, humble, self-effacing, cool guy! Thanks, Kenneth!

3 February 2024: Band on the Run, Paul McCartney & Wings. (2024 Capitol expanded reissue of 1973 Apple release)
Largesse knows no bounds when it comes to the 21st century McCartney catalog. When he's not issuing his seemingly 59th new edition of mediocre 2020 album McCartney III or abandoning his Paul McCartney Archive Collection program (largesse in reverse), there's always time to squeeze out another anniversary edition, and if you're me you slavishly buy it. (I do not buy every McCartney release, and even if I were a millionaire I wouldn't.) Here we have the third special reissue of Band on the Run. This one is for the album's 50th anniversary; in order to produce some sort of extra that wasn't on the giant 2010 deluxe box edition, they've coughed up an "underdubbed" version of the album. I've not heard it yet, but from what I've read it seems like it might as well be called "the unfinished version before we added all the overdubs in the studio." Whether I find this essential listening or not awaits to be seen, but in the meanwhile, I want my neighborhood record shop to stay in business, so week after week I special-order titles, and here it sits. Above you see the front cover, the hype sticker, and the back cover.
The fine-print information on the album's reverse comes in the form of a sticker. I guess for the underdubbed edition they wanted the cover art to be underadorned.
Tumblr media
Open up the package once and you see this.
Tumblr media
Open it once more and you see the below, with the "Linda McCartney Polaroid Poster" folded up and put in a slot in the middle panel.
Tumblr media
Here is the same view with the "poster" removed.
Tumblr media
Here are both sides of that poster. I couldn't get it to stand up on its own, so we see it at a funny angle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up we see both sides of disc one's slipcase followed by the disc itself. This is simply the Band on the Run album proper, using the original artwork. I've got no idea what mix or master this is, if they did a new one or used an old one. I could look it up, but I'd have to care.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up, the same of disc two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At least McCartney is now back on Capitol where he belongs, and not some expansion-team label that sounds like a hedge fund owns it.
Below we have copies of the three "recent" Band on the Run reissues. At least they seem recent to me, even though the first one here was bought by a much younger me I barely remember. This isn't even one of my favorite McCartney albums. Why do I do this? I suppose a therapist could tell you.
From left to right:
25th Anniversary Edition, which includes a bonus "documentary" CD I'm not sure I've ever played (Capitol, 1999)
The Paul McCartney Archive Collection two-CD edition, which also includes a DVD that I've not watched (I did not buy the super-deluxe edition of this version, which includes even more material) (Hear Music/Concord, 2010)
Their new friend the 50th Anniversary Edition (Capitol, 2024)
Tumblr media
My 9-year-old nephew will want these someday, right?

HAARP & Summer Sonic ‘06 Interview [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“When we started the band, we didn't want to make an album or get on a plane and travel, we just wanted to gig, and playing live was the most important thing. I got in the band to play in front of people.”
Muse has taken on a variety of challenges as a recording artist, but it is their live shows that are their greatest appeal. Here we introduce some of their thoughts on their live shows and their memories of touring and festivals, including the release of “Haarp” in 2008 and an interview with Dominic & Chris at Summer Sonic in 2006.
Interview and text by Hidefumi Harima (Crossbeat) (First published in Crossbeat June 2008/October 2006) pix Yoshika Horita
HAARP interview “It wasn't just about us playing on stage, the audience was equally a part of the show, and seeing the stadium packed with people, I'm sure they were as excited as we were.”
—Did you have a theme or vision in mind when you made “HAARP”? Dominic: The two shows we did last year were the biggest we've ever done, and we wanted to document them on film. It was a monumental moment. We weren't going to put it on DVD at first, but a few months later, we watched the footage again and it captured the excitement and the passion of the event so well that we decided to put it on DVD. The show was a little different from day to day, and I wanted to release both days anyway, so I decided to release Saturday's performance on CD and Sunday's on DVD.
—I'm sure you took time to remember that day again when you were making this film. What do you think those two days at Wembley Stadium meant to Muse? Dominic: It was a wonderful event. When I stood on stage and looked out at the audience, I was moved. All three of us were very nervous. We were all very nervous. We had an elevator that took us up through the audience, and then we walked down the aisle to the stage, and I was both excited and nervous. I enjoyed it once we started playing though. The view from the stage was just amazing. The crowd was great that day, singing along and really getting the show going. It was really moving to see everyone singing along and really enjoying the show from the stage.
—When you entered the venue, what were you thinking and feeling as the three of you stood back to back and took the elevator up to the stage? Dominic: I was thinking about making sure the elevator didn't break down and stop (laughs). I didn't want to stop halfway and have to climb up to the stage. I would think about the first song and concentrate on what I was going to do and what I was going to play. I just wanted the show to go well until the end. I had spent a lot of time working on the set and the production, so I just wanted the show to go smoothly until the end. After that, I just wanted everyone to have fun.
—At first, you must have felt “Wow, what a big venue!” Did you get used to it as you played? Or did the special feeling persist until the end? Dominic: It felt special until the end. Well, we played Saturday and Sunday, so maybe Sunday was a little more relaxed. But we all talked about it, and even though we did it once on Saturday, when we went on stage on Sunday, we were still like, “Wow, that's huge!” It's hard to get used to that. You have to do it in a venue like that over and over again.
—What did you think when you saw the video of the audience and the aerial view that you couldn't see from the stage? Dominic: It brought back that feeling. I intentionally let it sit for a while. After the show, everyone was still in a high state of excitement. The excitement didn't die down for weeks. I personally watched YouTube videos (laughs), and I was moved by them too. They were amateur videos taken by the audience with cell phones and such, but they were taken from the audience's point of view, so I could feel what was going on there. Of course, the cheers and singing are louder than our sound, but it was very moving to see everyone singing along from the first song.
—Of course, both days were great, but were there any moments that you personally felt were special? Dominic: There were many. Of course the first song was really special. There was a lot of excitement in the audience. Especially the main riff at the end of the song, when the crowd went into a frenzy, so much so that we almost had to stop playing. “Feeling Good” was also a nice touch. It was the first time I was able to relax a bit because it was a slower song, and the audience got into the swing of it with a big chorus. Then came the giant helium inflated balloons with acrobats hanging from them, again a slow song, so we could forget we were on stage and just enjoy the show.
—You said, “I want everyone in the audience to feel as if they were in the front row.” Do you think you achieved that? Dominic: We did everything we could. I really wanted to make sure that the experience was the same for everyone. We tried to make the audience look at the stage, not only at the screen, but also at the content, the size of the stage, the videos, etc. We put screens on both sides of the stage, but we also put a screen in the center. We put screens on both sides of the stage, but we also put a lot of interesting and artistic effects in the center of the stage. By naturally drawing the audience's attention to the stage in this way, I feel like I am a part of the show. However, when the stage is that big, the band looks small. That's why I made sure that our sound reaches all the way to the last row.
—You have released “Hullabaloo” and “Live from Absolution Tour” as live videos. What is special about “HAARP”? Dominic: The show itself was different, to say the least. There was something special about it compared to other shows. There was a special atmosphere in that stadium, a special energy. It wasn't just us playing on stage, the audience was equally a part of the show. Everyone enjoyed being there, and was happy to share the same space with so many people. I'm sure the people who came to see the show were just as excited as we were to see the stadium filled with people. The DVD captures exactly that, everything that happened on that day, in that place.
—There are many great live albums. Whose album is your favorite and whose album inspired you the most? Dominic: I really liked David Bowie's “Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture”. At the time I didn't realize it was a live album. The sound and music were that good. It was even better than the studio version of “Ziggy Stardust.” Also, Rage Against the Machine was my favorite live band, so I had a lot of pirated copies of their live shows.
—It seems like you are already working on new songs, how are they feeling so far? There seems to be a wide variety of songs coming out, from electronic ones to orchestral collaborations. Dominic: It's too early to tell. Whenever I start writing a song, I have a lot of ideas, some of them are electronic, and some of them are like a 15 minute long epic suite. I have so many other ideas, I honestly don't know what it's going to be like. What will be different this time around is that we will probably do all the recording and production ourselves. We also built our own studio, so it will be different from the past. We will have more freedom and less time constraints, which will make it easier to experiment. We'll have more freedom and less time constraints, which will make it easier to experiment.
—You said last fall, “Normally I'd need some time away from the tour to relax, but things are a little different here. I'm restless.” What do you feel is the source of this increased creativity? Dominic: There are moments when I have this creative impulse, but if I really want to get it right, I have to think about it carefully. Because the songs we write on tour reflect only who we are at that moment. We have never recorded songs that we tried out live, or songs that we wrote at the end of a tour, for the album. When we listen to them back when we are making an album, it feels like it's a drag on the previous work, or even if it's not, it sounds old-fashioned. By taking the time to calm down and think about it, we are able to approach the new album with a fresh mindset. So, there are some ideas that came out during the tour, but I don't know if they will be used for the album or not.

Summer Sonic ‘06 “Fortunately, we don't get bogged down too often on tour, because the three of us are like childhood friends. If there's a problem, we can figure it out together.”
—Some bands get tired of touring. Why is that not the case with Muse? Chris: Well, I think it's because the live shows are more important than anything else, and we formed the band to play in front of people. Music means different things to different musicians. Some people like to write songs anyway, but don't really want to be in front of people. …… Or they're like classical composers who create first and foremost and don't think about going on tour. In our case, when we started the band at 14 or 15 years old, we just wanted to gig rather than make an album or get on a plane and travel. Then we started to realize how much fun and how important it was to be in the studio.
—Do you have any memories of your first tour? Chris: We signed with Maverick right before Christmas of 1998, and we started touring in January. We were like, “Okay, this is going to be a big change!” But the first show we played, there was no one there (laughs). It was no different than playing in my hometown in the middle of nowhere, only I started going to other cities (laughs). I had been dreaming of going to other cities to play for at least 5 years, so it was very exciting to make it happen.
—What would you like to say to Madonna now? Chris: I think the label (Maverick) is a tax break for Madonna (laughs). I don't think she's involved in it (laughs).
—Which is your favorite country you've toured? Chris: Japan comes in second or third. It's interesting how far apart the cultures are, and the Japanese food is delicious. What I don't like is being in Japan without being able to speak Japanese (laughs). If I could speak Japanese, you would probably be number one.
—What are some of your favorite distractions while on tour? Chris: The three of us are like childhood friends, so fortunately we don't get bogged down too much on tour. If there is a problem, we know it right away and can work it out together. If we can take even one day off and go home, it's a great distraction. The other thing is to absorb the city. I get stuck in hotels and tour buses all the time and get bored, so I need to get out. And then there is golf (laughs).
—Muse and golf seem a long way from each other. Chris: I've played a few times. I'm a good tour manager. I've played in Japan, too, in the Osaka area. I hit the grass more than the ball (laughs).
—What is the best country you have been to and why? Dominic: Japan is pretty high on the list. The culture is totally different and the people are great. France is also very enthusiastic, and they are very loud. The country itself is beautiful. And Russia was interesting. It's a country that not many bands go to, so it was interesting. I'm looking forward to going to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, China, and South America for the first time on this tour.
—Who are some of the best bands you have toured with? Dominic: I would have to say the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who we toured with around the time we released “Showbiz”. We were very young and we learned from them how to play big arena venues. Millionaire and Soulwax from Belgium and The Exit from New York were also great.
—You meet a lot of bands at festivals. Dominic: Queen was cool. David Bowie came to our show in New York and visited us in the studio. It was a strange feeling. The Strokes and I got together at the Big Day Out in Australia and talked a little bit. Metallica is also a combination that I would never have thought of under normal circumstances. But they are nice guys (laughs).
—I heard that your most memorable festival experience was Glastonbury in 2004. Dominic: I think Glastonbury was one of the first festivals we saw because it was close to where we grew up. We got to play at a festival like that. We started out on the rookie stage, but then we got to be on the main stage as headliners…… Compared to Oasis and Paul McCartney (who were headliners for the other nights that year), we weren't quite there yet. I think the performance itself was great, because people who didn't know us at first seemed to become fans by the end of the show.
—Right after that show, your father passed away unexpectedly……. Dominic: It was like going from the top of the heights to the bottom, and it's still hard for me to remember some parts of it. I try not to think about that event and the live performance together. The performance was great and I will never forget it. My father's death was very painful, but I try to put it out of my mind.
Translator's Note: Yeah, I'll admit that the last part of this interview is painful even for myself to read as well.

PowerPC Macs won’t let you install OS X to a USB drive or choose it as your startup volume, although there is a work around for that. PowerPC Macs running any version of the Mac OS prior to 10.4.2 cannot mount GPT volumes. Both PowerPC and Intel Macs can boot from APM (Apple’s old partitioning scheme) hard drives, which is the format you must use to create a universal boot drive in Leopard. Only Macintel models can boot from GPT hard drives. Intel-based Macs use a partitioning scheme known as GPT. Mac OS X includes support for remapping the Windows alt and option keys to option and cmd respectively. Apple says buyers can plug in their favorite USB keyboard and mouse – or buy Apple’s offerings. The Mac mini doesn’t include a keyboard or mouse. On the rear, just enough ports to do everything important. On the front, there’s just a slot-loading optical drive (and for the first time, it’s a SATA SuperDrive) and a power light. The tiny Mac mini (6.5″ square, 2″ high, 2.9 lb.) has a minimalist design. Like the Early 2009 model, this Mini has five USB 2.0 ports (up from four on pre-2009 Intel Minis), two monitor ports, and FireWire 800. The Intel-based Mac mini looks like previous models from the front, but the rear is different. And for power users, there’s now a server version with a second hard drive bay in place of the optical drive.įor those who need more processing power, you can order the Mac mini with a 2.53 GHz or 2.66 GHz CPU. Just seven months after overhauling the Mac mini, Apple made some small improvements: The base speed is now 2.26 GHz, 2 GB of RAM is the norm, and the 160 GB hard drive holds more data than the 120 GB drive found in the previous version.

Jenna Coleman on DVD/Blu-ray in North America (June 2022 edition)
Once in a while for the benefit of my fellow Jenna Coleman fans in North America, I’ll do a quick rundown of what TV shows or movies featuring our favourite actress are available in DVDs and Blu-rays - and what are not. In reverse chronological order (drama productions only). Spoiler break to respect timelines:
The Serpent (2021): Has been out on DVD in the UK for a while, but sadly it seems to be an example of a Netflix series that isn’t getting a physical release over here. Doesn’t bode well for her upcoming series, The Sandman though its predecessor American Gods was released to home media, so who knows. (The upcoming film Klokkenluider? Not even going to try and guess that one. The War Rooms hasn’t even started filming yet as far as we know.)
A Separate Peace (2020): This was an online play by Tom Stoppard Jenna did via Zoom mid-lockdown. A one-time shot, it’s unlikely to get any sort of re-release. I saw a copy of it kicking around Youtube for a while but no longer. A review with clips from it can be found here.
Inside No. 9 (2020): There’s been DVD release of Season 5 (including Jenna’s guest appearance) in the UK, but in North America the show isn’t well known so no release here as yet. When the recently announced American remake comes out, will it spark a Region 1 DVD or Blu-ray of the original?
Corporate Monster (2019): Filmed way back around 2010, but held for nearly a decade, it’s only been made available on Youtube. Sometimes short indie films turn up on DVD, though, especially if the director goes on to bigger and better things, so you never know.
Tumblr media
All My Sons (2019): The live stream of Jenna’s West End debut play (see above, with thanks to gifmaker @oswincoleman) was delayed until early 2020 for North American fans and unexpectedly got a streaming rebroadcast during lockdown. But National Theatre Live doesn’t tend to do DVD or Blu-ray releases, so don’t hold your breath to see this in any formal release.
Victoria (2016-19): All 3 seasons are available on DVD in North America (I’ve seen box sets of the combined seasons), but there’s no Blu-ray of S3 over here as far as I know. All are also available in the UK. The PBS edits (which include extra scenes in most regular episodes) have never been released, but may still be viewable online in the US on PBS’s website (which can’t be accessed from Canada so I can’t check).
The Cry (2018): DVD release in NA and the UK. Not overly common, but available. No Blu-ray though.
Thunderbirds Are Go (2017): Jenna did a guest voice for the first episode of Series 2 of the CGI remake series. It’s on DVD in the UK, but so far it’s only available on streaming here.
Me Before You (2016): Widely available in DVD and Blu-ray here. Sadly, I tend to see it in Wal-Mart $5 special bins these days.
Doctor Who (2012-2015; 2017): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray. Twice Upon a Time was released on its own if you want her cameo. If you want her extra scenes as Clara (things like the Doctor Who Ultimate Guide minisode and her cameo in The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, you may need to invest in the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi box sets. Good luck finding her DW audio story “The Time Machine” on CD, but I think you can still order a download of it from places like Big Finish (her only other known audio book, The Secret Garden, is also a rarity on CD but I think Audible has it, along with a 2018 audio drama of A Christmas Carol in which she plays a role; it’s not on CD.
Death Comes to Pemberly (2013): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray over here, though I think as with Victoria it’s the UK edit that we got in North America, not the PBS version which may or may note have extra scenes (I’ve never been able to verify).
Dancing on the Edge (2013): Again, widely available on DVD and Blu-ray here.
Room at the Top (2012): I won’t rehash the rights issues that delayed its broadcast for a year and make it unlikely to ever get a DVD or Blu-ray release anywhere, but you can stream it on both sides of the Atlantic.
Titanic (2012): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray. Just don’t mistake it for that little home movie James Cameron made back in the 90s.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011): It’s a Marvel movie - you can likely get it in 4K too (possibly the only Jenna release in that format). Just remember - she’s in two scenes but you might need the 4K version to see her in the second one.
Waterloo Road (2009): Jenna was a cast member for Series 5, which is on DVD in the UK. North American fans are able to watch her season on officially sanctioned YouTube uploads (still available but with the series revival I’d search for “Series 5″ specifically to skip recent uploads). DVD release has begun in North America by Acorn, but looks like only Series 1 so far.
Emmerdale (2005-09): Not a chance. You can find clips on Youtube but Jenna appeared in more than 400 episodes of the soap and the only soap opera I know of to be released in entirety on DVD was Dark Shadows.

Hi! I think I remember you posting about "making" your own computer? I'm sorry to bother you with something like this, but was it difficult? Would you say you have to know a lot about how computers work to do it? Thanks!
Heck yeah!!! Oh man!! Gosh guys can I talk to you about building computers and how EVERYONE willing to do some basic googling is almost certainly capable of this I promise?
Welcome to:
Tumblr media
Okay okay okay so let me spin you a li’l yarn: I was in optometry school in 2010-2011ish and I had been living up to now on prebuilts, mostly laptops, but DA2 was recently out and gosh darn it I wanted something I could play a proper game on. A friend of mine had a 10yo daughter who wanted to build a computer herself, and he told me if I’d buy the parts, he’d walk both of us through how to do it (what really happened was the 10yo built my first computer and I watched and brought drinks, so–no, I wouldn’t say you have to know a lot about how computers work to do it!).
The physical requirements are some basic manual dexterity & arm strength (you gotta be able to manipulate some tiny things and put some pressure on some connections) and you will most likely need to lift up to 15 pounds, although you can limit that if you go for smaller components. The ability to bend forward and twist and reach will also probably be necessary, although some careful planning can also likely mitigate that.
Tumblr media
I think I have pictures of the actual build process somewhere, but regardless, it resulted in this bad boy that served me well for about nine years. I was shocked to see how easy it was to put together, honestly; if you can follow a Lego assembly book, you can put a computer together. With tools like PCPartPicker that have built-in compatibility checks to make sure all your pieces fit, it’s a piece of cake to put together a parts list that you can feel really good about. You just pick whether you want your motherboard to come with fancy lights or not (hint: rgb is unironically cool & i’ll fight anyone who says otherwise).
In the end, you’ll need a set of basic components. You’ll need:
A case to put all the pieces in
A motherboard, the circuit board of the computer that connects everything, basically the heart of the computer
A CPU, the brain of the computer that determines processing power, or basically how fast it can do math and direct traffic
a CPU cooling system, which can be either mechanical fans or liquid cooling, gotta keep that baby chill; may or may not come packaged with the CPU depending on what you get
A graphics card (aka GPU), the thing that makes video games look pretty (and what will probably be the single most expensive item in the build depending on how good you go)
RAM, a short-term memory processing component that comes in different amounts (4gb, 8gb, 16gb, 32gb, 64gb if you’re a madman) depending on how fast you need your short-term memory to work. Good RAM allows you to do things like open a bunch of Chrome tabs at once, run Photoshop at the same time you’re listening to youtube videos, or process the demand of loading up a host of enemies in Mass Effect. Most everyone these days can get by just fine with 16gb of RAM, which is what I have.
a hard drive (or the new, faster, more expensive version, a solid state drive) which functions as your long-term storage bins. This is where you save documents, images, and install your programs. These come in tons of sizes–the larger your files are, the more storage space you’ll want. I always put at least a terabyte of storage in my builds.
a power supply unit or PSU, which gives the electrical juice for everything to run
a monitor (the more hertz, the smoother the video will be - you’ll want either 60hz or 144hz depending on how much your number of frames-per-second matter to you)
a keyboard and mouse
speakers or headphones or both!
Optional addons:
RGB lighting for everything :O
an optical drive (aka something to put DVDs, Blurays, or other physical CD disks into)
fancy liquid cooling pipes
additional case fans; most cases come with adequate fans, but if you are using the computer in a room with poor ventilation or you find that certain components are running hot, you can install additional fans
coincidentally you can also get fans with RGB lighting too
cable extenders when you are going for a specific color scheme
So it can definitely all look overwhelming at first, but when you start to look at how everything is laid out, you’ll notice some trends. Look at these motherboards, for example.
Tumblr media
These are just four random motherboards I pulled off Newegg, a commonly used computer parts purchasing site. Sure, the colors are a bit different, but the layout between them…is all basically the same! Here, I’ll draw it out.
Tumblr media
In just about every modern motherboard you buy, this will be the rough layout. Everything else is window dressing–what kind of GPU you get, what kind of CPU you get, whether your RAM lights up cool colors or not. Your motherboard will ALWAYS include a map that has extensive descriptions of what each connection does.
Much, much, much more under the jump!
Tumblr media
Most of these you won’t even need!
There are always some compatibility things to consider–as I mentioned, PCPartPicker can help you figure out a lot of these–but the biggest one to care about is the CPU. There are two major companies that make CPUs, AMD and Intel. They both have pros and cons on the chips they make, but right now, AMD makes a family of CPUs called Ryzen that both outperform and are cheaper than Intel’s current leading brands, the i7 and i9 lines. Intel was king of the hill for a long time, though, and their CPUs are still really good quality, so some people still go with them over the cheaper alternatives for now. (There are some reports of black screens with the new Ryzen lines, but as I’ve never owned one, I can’t personally speak to how common that is.)
Regardless, once you pick which family of CPUs you want to go with, AMD or Intel, you just have to pick an Intel-friendly or AMD-friendly motherboard. This is always specified in the description of the motherboard. I own the Asus z370 motherboard, so here’s what it says in the description for CPU:
Tumblr media
Anyway, once you’ve picked all your parts and had everything shipped to you, it’s literally just a plug-n-play, step by step until everything’s plugged in. Your motherboard manual will also include recommended order of installations, too, and often how to install them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It helps to remember that the manufacturers of all these parts understand that they are expensive, and they really DON’T want to make them hard to install! Broken or difficult pieces during installation means that the customer is upset, and upset customers ask for refunds and lose brand loyalty.
Tumblr media
It also helps to understand that a lot of these connections are based on certain standards–I didn’t realize until I was rebuilding my current machine that these holes set for screws really do work with just about everything you get, as long as it’s the same generation, because motherboard manufactures WANT you to have the flexibility to go any attachment brand you like and still be able to use their board to mount them.
So, you pick your case and open it up, and you put the motherboard down on top of all the little screw holes until they match, and then you screw all the screws down firmly.
Old rig, partially disassembled:
Tumblr media
New, in approximately same state:
Tumblr media
(One of the reasons I went with this larger white case than a smaller, slim case like my old one, is because this nicer case has what’s called “cable management;” that means there’s a built-in back area behind the motherboard where all my cables can be jammed without messing up the “aesthetic” of the glass window. My first build obviously did not have that, as seen in that first picture at the top of this post, so I had to just jam my cables wherever I could fit them so that the sides would close, haha.)
Anyway, you can see that the motherboard is just screwed in where it should be, and my CPU is already installed where it should be. I haven’t mounted the cooler for it yet because I needed to clean off the old thermal paste and install new thermal paste before doing so. My two sticks of RAM are also mounted in the top right in the motherboard’s recommended configuration & locations for two sticks (vs. one, vs. four).
Then, with the cooler in place, it looked like this:
Tumblr media
So the cooler I have is liquid cooling in a closed system (the thick black tubes running right to left) which is attached to a fan that mounts in place of the white fan on the left from the previous picture. It was as simple as unscrewing the old fan and putting the new one in its place. I think I even used the same screws. The fan is powered by that thin cable running along the top of the case that plugs into a little socket on the motherboard labeled “CPU Fan.” It was as simple as just finding the right plug; it doesn’t even have directionality, just a three-pin socket, so it doesn’t even matter which way you plug.
Already it’s looking like a proper computer! And because this case has cable management, I took a picture of what it currently looked like from the backside.
Tumblr media
This case is cool because it has a neat set of connectors mounted on the back of this little hideaway to connect the case fans. I could have run the white fan cables through to the front of the motherboard for them to get power/marching orders, but it was cleaner aesthetically to attach them here in the back. Nothing wrong with connecting them on the front, though–that’s what I did in my original build!
Tumblr media
You also might have noticed I’ve mounted the PSU in that white case by now as well. It’s the large black and red box in the bottom corner, seen best from behind. The white case comes with what’s called a PSU shroud, which just means there’s a fancy white cover over it to keep the ~aesthetic~ when viewed from the front side.
Tumblr media
The next step is to mount the graphics card!
Tumblr media
There’s instructions in your manual as to exactly how these mount, but it really and truly is just removing the dust cover brackets where you need to, and then a delicate plug & play, pushing that big guy in until you hear the click! (Click good, snap bad. Haha. I’ve changed out these cards several dozen times and never broken one, though!)
You can also see the ugly red-tipped cables plugged into the GPU and the motherboard, both on the right side. These come from the Power Supply Unit (they are all permanently connected in most brands, and look basically like a squid’s tentacles–once you have your items mounted onto the motherboard, you just look for the connector from the PSU with the right number of pins and plug it in!)
Tumblr media
This guy is the worst. He is fat and hard to maneuver and always requires SO MUCH FORCE to click into this delicate bendy board and your heart will ALWAYS be in your throat as your fingers shake from how hard you’re having to push to sink it, and it will ALWAYS eventually go in but you’ll hate every second of the doing. I hate you, 24-pin EATX. I hate you so much.)
The next thing I did was mount my optical drive (because yes, I still own one), my hard drive, and my solid state drive.
Tumblr media
The hard drive and SSD both serve the same purpose (long-term data storage), but the SSD is much faster and uses newer technology. It’s also more expensive for the amount of storage you get, so I have a 256gb SSD that holds my operating system, my heavily-used programs like Firefox and Photoshop & Premiere, and one or two video games I play the most that I would like to load as fast as possible. This is the drive that can allow me to restart my whole system in less than five seconds.
The hard drive is 1.75 terabytes and holds everything else: fics, pictures, videos, music, other games, etc. They mount onto the racks with pre-drilled screws. The optical drive just slides into the socket snugly until it hits the back of the rack.
All of these use a standard connector called a SATA cable which runs between the back of the drive to a SATA socket on the motherboard. Most motherboards come with at LEAST six or seven of these connector slots, and some come with more. They look like this:
Tumblr media
and are pretty universal. Any kind of extra storage or drive you want to add to your computer will probably connect with a SATA cable. I think my motherboard, my SSD & HD, and my case purchases all came with a pack of loose SATA cables of different lengths to be used for whatever I wanted.
The rack each drive is mounted to came installed with the case and pre-drilled with screw holes (and provided screws) for attaching either the HD or SSD in every slot. Because this case is all about aesthetic, it also comes with two vertical SSD mounts on the back of the case if you wanted to remove the right-side rack altogether, but as I mentioned, I have the optical drive, so I couldn’t go with that option.
So now we have all the major pieces mounted! The last set of connections are a collection of small fiddly pieces that all plug in roughly the same area and do things like light up the case’s LED, provide that startup beep, connect the USB sockets on the case’s front to power, etc. This is by far the section that takes me the longest because I guarantee I will ALWAYS plug at least two into the wrong socket and not have a beep, or my audio won’t work or something until I go back and reconnect them.
Tumblr media
The next thing was to plug in my monitors and…see what happened when we hit the power button! (Monitor connections just plug directly into your graphics card in the back of the case.) And here’s what happened!
youtube
So it turned out when I was connecting my SSD (which has my OS on it), I was pushing on the little connector while sitting on the back side of the case. I thought I had the thing in the socket, but what I’d actually done was jam the connector just under the lip of the motherboard (that is, not connected to anything at all, just hanging in open space). Once I realized, though, it was an easy fix!
The last thing I wanted to do to complete the clean white look I wanted was to replace those UGHLY red PSU cables with what are called “cable extenders.” I bought some white ones on Amazon; because most PSUs’ cables are permanently attached at the box, you plug your cable extenders into the other end and then feed them through the case, so that’s the only portion visible. The ugly PSU cables are still there at the other end of the white cables, just hidden in the cable management area behind the motherboard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent some time fixing up the cables to curve exactly how I wanted them to, then picked my LED RGB colors and closed up the open side with the glass wall. All that was left was to plug in my mouse/keyboard/speakers/headphones/mic/webcam, etc., and we were done!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ta-daaaa!
The first build I did, the one in the blue & black case, took us about two days due to some unexpected problems. First, we were trying to salvage an old CPU from my HP prebuilt to save a little money. Unfortunately, they used basically no thermal paste to connect it to its fan, and when we were trying to get the fan off, it actually tore the CPU out of its socket and bent a bunch of its pins. I ended up going to Best Buy or something and getting a replacement off the shelf.
The other issue I had was that I foolishly didn’t back up my files, and lost a bunch of them in the rebuild (including my Hawke’s original run through the DA2 game :( :( :( ) Always back up your files before ever going in and messing with your case!
Over the years I replaced a bunch of components in it, which is why it lasted me so long, but the transfer into the new case only took me about three hours, and that was with a bunch of breaks throughout. I probably could have done it faster if I hadn’t wanted to savor it, haha. The cable management for the backless desk took a lot longer, though! (…and a LOT of zip ties.)

I do set my new build on a small glass stand (again, from Amazon) because Hamlet’s pretty sheddy and I wanted to keep airflow as good as possible. I’m limited on how many case fans I can install since I have the optical drive rack taking up a lot of space on the right, but I could install new fans on top if I wanted. My temperatures are great, though (I monitor with CoreTemp & GPUTemp, as well as my motherboard’s built-in temp monitoring software), so I don’t need to unless I decide I need more RGB.
Anything I might want to add, I run through PCPartPicker to make sure it’ll fit what I already have. For example, my parts list looks like this (full view and complete parts list available at this link):

ANYWAY.
If you are patient, if you can fit small Lego-like pieces in labeled sockets, and you are a decent googler, you can build your own PC. It’s really, really hard to do serious damage to components nowadays, even if you plug something in wrong. There’s a bunch of resources, though, and I’d recommend the following places to start:
newegg.com - parts for sale, getcher parts here
pcpartpicker.com - put your list of components together, and it’ll flag any compatibility issues or known problems
https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/ - great starting point for new builders, tons of advice and how-to’s for every step of the process, and a decently responsive community to help troubleshoot any issues you might have
And I obviously love doing this kind of thing, so if there’s anything I can help with, I’m more than happy to try! Just let me know, and I hope this was helpful!
