2001: A Space Odyssey AU where the Discovery One is a frat bus.

Hal’s the driver and he’s currently completely off his ass due to accidentally eating an entire ziploc bag of edibles.

Frank got thrown out of the bus by Hal and he’s just desperately sprinting after it for the rest of the film

Hal still talks like canon Hal

The rest of the party (minus Dave) got left at a stop while they were sleeping

Dave is just repeatedly screaming at Hal to stop driving because they’ve nearly crashed into fifty different vehicles

The Monolith is just the bus’ air freshener that Hal hallucinates to actually be at the end of the highway

I made an AU where a bunch of fictional sentient AI characters are human, and here’s the character lore I have set up (so far) (btw AM, Edgar, and HAL are the “main characters”, they’re in an evil polycule)

AM: The oldest of the group, and works for the military in The Office of Defense Programs. The 5 are all people he fired, and has an orange cat named after Ted. He’s bitterly divorced with GlaDos, and they’re always throwing lawsuits at each other, mainly over their sons Po3 and SCP-079.

Edgar: Roommates with Miles, and works at a music store.

HAL 9000: Works at NASA (I haven’t thought about where yet), the space crew are all his coworkers.

(If it isn’t obvious I haven’t developed Edgar and HAL too much and I’m kind of at a roadblock at it, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated ^_^)

IT'S TIME FOR MY HAL LORE DUMP!!! If you'd like to see any of what I have to bring to the table with my ideas/art, here you go!

Quick tidbit: I'm not amazing at designing characters, and MUCH less with robots. So some things are more just me making things up, but hey, it's sci-fi. We're stretching the imagination a bit here. Anyway, time for the actual lore dump from here on!

I wanted to add some info to this, mostly the "heavier than he looks" part because, well...

He looks like this.

In universe, it's just cheaper to make him smaller. Well, them, as same goes for Sal. (I don't currently have a full body for her right now, this is more about Hal at the moment, though. Most of all robot form tidbits applies to Sal as well).

Forgot to mention, that is also the reason they only have 4 fingers! [and totally not because drawing full hands is a massive pain in my ass]

It's also one of those things to make him more friendly, if that make sense. Yk, the soothing voice and human-like personality are meant to make him more relatable and friendly and non-threatening. So, he's a bit smaller than the rest of the crew. (Plus I feel like a tall Hal would be a bit spooky, and this AU is mostly going to be fluff)

On a similar note, he's padded with silicone. He gives... somewhat comfortable hugs.

(Metal skeleton is supposed to be dark gray/black, but this is just a sketch)

For the most part, it's to keep important, load bearing wires and his spinal area from wearing both itself, and tearing holes in the clothes. (And temperature regulation as seen in drawing)

I WAS going to add a drawing of him and Dave hugging for emotional support, but it looked a little too close to getting freaky deeky lmao (and I'm an anxious mess) so for now I'm not gonna have it on here. But if wanted I could post separately.

I'm just gonna say, I'm still workshopping a lot of ideas for this, I guess, AU. I will be adding Dave x Hal as a central ship, but for the most part will just be shenanigans with the Discovery crew.

I am open to headcanons n the like!

But for now this is just basic info for what I'm like, planning with my AU, and by extension account until I find something else to fixate on lmao.

how do u think bowman and ted would react to hearing about the others AI?

Dave would be appalled to say the least. He thought what HAL did was bad, and comparing that to what AM has done....well, Dave would not be pleased.

If it's pre-slug Ted, he would be curious as to how HAL operated, purely to see where AM went wrong. But if it's post-slug Ted, he wouldn't really care, and would interact and inquire about HAL just to see where the fallacies would be (he believes that if he can find and point them out to Dave, then he can save Dave from the potential of HAL turning; Dave does not like this).

Also, if HAL and AM were to meet, HAL would go into full defensive mode, trying to protect Dave from the potential of him getting hurt. AM would be amused by the futility.

AM would be a poor chess partner, he would eat or play pretend with the pieces. Ted forgot how to play chess, but would be willing to learn only to analyze HAL

working on a signalis/2001 space odyssey crossover au since im really fixated on 2001aso and enjoy the world and characters of signalis, might dump lore and such here for it eventually but its mainly only hal because I just wanted to draw him as a replika and it spiraled into this lol. . .

insane ramblings below cut, includes 2001 space odyssey and signalis spoilers

HALR aka Halberd or Hal (don't have any real good ideas for what the german in the acronym would stand for yet as I do NOT speak a lick of german) is a replika based off HAL-9000 from 2001aso. I kind of stretched the replika naming standards for this because I couldn't find any good birds or bird names so I just resorted to the first bird I knew starting with H, the hawk or goshawk (sorry talk tuah fans). also he's named after and uses a halberd because it sounds like Hal Bird and im funny like that. halberds are also sick as hell and can counter falke spears which I thought was cool.

purpose-wise he's basically a sigma male merge of LSTR and FKLR units with both of their specialities combined, i.e. the ship maintenance skills and "stoicism" of LSTRs and the combat prowess and Bioresonance of FKLRs. He does pretty much everything HAL9000 does in 2001aso, like controlling the entire Discovery and maintaining navigation and the hibernaculums while engaging with the crew (or just Dave lol). my reasoning for his deployment over another LSTR unit, besides just being an upgraded and more capable variant, is due to his strong biores and use as protection.

in an earlier period of the world (I'm not too confident on the timeline in tandem with the actual game including the whole ariane dream situation so like. Alternate Universe Split Timeline or whatever) the Nation ends up being the first to secretly dig up the Tycho Monolith and trace the emanating signal to a far off planetary system. this prompts the designing of a replika that can handle both prolonged space expeditions and any potential conflict it may encounter in a first-contact mission with alien lifeforms. as far as the public and Hal's crew on the Discovery are aware, he really is simply just an upgraded high-end alternative to LSTRs. they're a big scary corporation of course they wouldn't want people including the literal pilots and scientists to know they're looking for aliens lol.

ALSO, he utilizes biores to basically form the same connection and hold to the ship as HAL9000 does in the form of a sort of halo or "crown" of flashing cords that trail behind him, connecting to his back and upper arms and flickering in and out of existence like half tangible processor threads. modified HAL terminals on the discovery walls act as anchor points for him to connect to and fully immerse himself in the workings of the ship, this makes his crown spread farther and fully tangible (I hemmed and hawed with my friends about the colors they'd be because gold wouldn't really make sense so I just ended up using technical difficulties aka my pride flag). he can also manifest his cool trusty red halberd as means of protecting his crew, though he will of course take great pains to keep peace among other lifeforms.

I think thats about all I've got so far, uhh some quick facts: he's 8 feet tall, 245cm, could probably beat falke in a fight, anchoring stabilizes his persona and singing and flowers degrade it (had to shoehorn in daisies somehow), his pixel logo is based off the USAA logo from the space odyssey film jumpsuits, he/its pronouns, and he and dave WILL be kissing. android sesbian lex and robot say gex solidarity 🤝
