Music Bingo
Thanks for the tag @ceph-the-ghost-writer! I only got one, but I'm always on the lookout for new music so I have a lot more to add to the list!
Tumblr media
Like I said, I listen to just about anything, but I figured I'd throw my current obsessions up and see who might know them! It was easier than deciding which 70's artists I would consider my top 16. I'll leave this as an open tag, just to see who wants to have a go.
My bingo card:

Company is a very good musical that I never ever want to see again. I've never had a least favorite musical before. I feel like I am the target demographic for that musical and I have never related less to a story.
I was just reading a reddit thread about the musical and there were mixed opinions, which makes sense. But there was more than one person who said they saw it in their 20's and didn't get it and then saw it again later in life and realized they knew every person on the stage and I'm just like. Please let that never be me.
Knowing this musical is from 1970 helps. Knowing Sondheim was gay but dated women into his 30's, came out at 40, and claimed to have first fallen in love in his 60's helps A LOT. It is a very good musical and I think there is probably a lot to pick apart and say about it. Like if I sat and thought about it for a long time there would probably be some cool analysis I could come up with! And I'm sure people have! But I hate it, it's horrible, and I never want to think about it again. Good night.

I feel like the way fidds and Stan are presented is so interesting like the masculinity they both give feels soooo very intentional and very modeled off of such specific ideals outside of their upbringings. They both come from areas that one would assume to be kind of hypermasculine in very specific ways like for instance a hog farm in rural Tennessee and very clean pressed neighborhood near the Jersey shore but they both kind of find themselves gravitating towards a more lax and artistic kind of vibe, specifically disco. And they still incorporate textures and patterns and staple pieces from the men of their upbringing into it while also branching out towards more flamboyant personas. Like, this is smth I wrote for a fiddlestan diddy a while back:
Stan was masculine in a way that Fiddleford wasn't used to. He was so used to masculinity being used as a shield. Something to hide behind; something rigid and and unchanging. A strict expectation that was the same from man to man, leaving little room for Fiddleford's silk shirts and flared jeans and shaggy hair. But Stanley's masculinity, in his tank top with his mullet and his curiosity, came off as more inviting. More fluid. It felt like a tide that kept flicking up around Fiddleford's ankles, and the looseness made his knees feel weak. Fiddleford licked his lips at the realization of how well they complimented each other.
Like they both have smth abt them that is so obviously “out of place” to a lot of potential random onlookers but is integral to how they feel abt themselves bc this is how they’re choosing to present themselves to the world ESPECIALLY Stan bc he lives so much of his life as a character rather than just as himself bc that’s the only way he feels he can survive bc being himself has hurt him so much in his life. But even when Fiddleford DOES achieve what the normal expectations for a man would be - a wife and a child and a home and a chance to own his own business - he still throws it all away for the chance to be close to ford. Who I think at this point is safe to call a canonically queer character. So there is smth in him that is very willing to forego all the traditional masculinity he’s managed to maintain for the chance to be close to someone who might understand why he feels TRAPPED by that traditional masculinity
“Oh but it was the 70’s, disco was popular, it was fine to dress like that” just… as someone who also grew up in Appalachia with family who were in their 20’s and 30’s in the 1970’s who still would have ridiculed or even threatened anyone who dressed like this… not always. Just because styles are popular in music or television doesn’t mean that they would be acceptable to someone’s upbringing or their peers, and I just know from growing up in the same kind of environment as Fiddleford that it would be likely and realistic that he rly was only able to dress like this BECAUSE of the distance he had put between himself and his family. And the reason I brought up disco specifically being a big source of inspiration for both of their fashion senses, in relation to them both having a kind of queer sense of masculinity, was bc disco was heavily influenced by ppl who were facing social persecution at the time (feminists and gay men and black ppl) and the genre was in itself a sense of community and social liberation. And even when it was at the height of its popularity disco was attacked and forced out of fashion by racist, misogynistic, and homophobic rock n roll fans in what ultimately became a riot led by a popular macho manliness preaching shock jock named Steve Dahl who started the “disco sucks” movement. So like… disco DID have its time in the spotlight, but it WAS still a source of sexual freedom in a time when that was very much not okay. There was a huge evangelical revival going on the 70’s that specifically attacked the small bit of sexual freedom that society experienced in the 60’s, and it was very much a time when ppl were saying that sexual freedom would turn ppl into actual murderers. So even tho disco was commercially successful, it still wasn’t ideal to be associated with it in a lot of places
But also i don’t think EITHER of them are Fem. I do think they’re both masc bc like… yeah. Like I said, even tho Fiddleford’s style is very disco heavy, he IS bringing in those textures and patterns and staples from his upbringing. And the way he was brought up, he would have most likely seen cowboys as the ideal masculine archetype. And while disco was a heated topic in the 70’s, the same silhouettes were still kind of floating around the country scene. Jeans were flared, just not full on bell bottoms. There were wide collared shirts, but not as deep a cut on the neck. And paisley was a pattern that kind of bridges the two groups. So he’s rly marrying the freedom from disco with the flair of 70’s country, which IS kind of a masculine approach to take when flirting with disco fashion. I also think a lot of ppl conflate body type with gender expression (waify, skinny = feminine/fat, broad = masculine) so they see a thinner guy who’s kind of faggy and go “oh he must be Fem” while disregarding EVERYTHING else abt him.
Like what was the point of us getting this picture if you’re just gonna ignore everything but ford’s stupid shorts?
Tumblr media
No parents, no wife, no small town church culture. It’s rly him at his most free and his mustache isn’t even the push broom style of mustache that was commonly associated with cowboys in the early 1970’s. This style of mustache was more associated with bikers at the time, and American biker culture has its roots in the post-war gay community. It’s the same origin as the leather community (as in leather daddy) which is why they share so many stylistic staples. So like… that’s yet another display of affinity towards a more masculine style
I don’t know… I just think they’re both so fascinating & I think considering a character’s wardrobe and styling is rly important to understanding them better

Random Dr. Clef hcs but i havent read his wiki in ages so these might be canon for all i know (they wont.)
Uh he can change his eye position to wherever he likes, and he WILL gaslight you into thinking his eye was always in that placement.
He can also switch his eye colours around if he so wanted to, he just doesn’t usually do that one.
Heh…. Cleft lip….
Has no idea how to play a viola, even though thats the only instrument that can play an alto clef (i think?? Idk much about music). He might even ask you what the fuck a viola is.
American+Polish
Any pronouns, but most people use he/him
He’s gay, lads. He snogs MEN. Actually he’s bi……………… maybe…. Idk I don’t get paid to go into more detail…
His birth records has been faked so many times that no one knows his actual age. Some say he’s 30’s, some say he’s in his 20’s, some say he’s in his 70’s, basically any age you can think of, he has probably had it in his records.
HATES modern pop music, LOVES toxic by Britney Spears(not all that modern tbh)
Anyways my phone is gonna die, its on 3%, I’m typing this instead of going back inside and being in lesson.

Frick it, we ball
KISMET HEADCANNONS for some future fan stuff I wanna make... Goes with this post kinda
Under a cut because it's LONG (the fixation has been REAL)
Gen
They band was formed shortly after the events of Trolls 1. It's the only way they make sense in my mind's timeline.
Branch was trying to get more involved with Troll village without relying on Poppy to connect him with people. He formed his own group of friends, and they became Kismet after realizing how much they enjoyed harmonizing/performing together.
These guys give me frat boy energy for some reason. They just collectively become more chaotic when they're around each other. Yes, even Branch. He and Hype play hot potato with the braincell because otherwise, nothing would get done in this group.
As they got to know one another, teasing one another became their primary love language. Lots of jabs and quips will fly among them when they're together, but they each know it's all in good fun.
Branch
Branch kept his involvement in the band a secret because, well...y'know. He has complicated history with being in a boyband, so he wanted to explore his feelings about Kismet without being bombarded with input from people outside the group.
He's fond of his friends and genuinely enjoys being a part of the band though! He just wants to be sure he's a part of this boy band because he's happy being with them and not because he's trying to recapture something he'd lost 20 years ago.
At first, the others were (understandably) hurt by Branch's desire to keep his place in the band a secret, but after he explained his reasons, they were willing to support him.
They were absolutely thrilled when he finally becomes open about the band though!
During the secrecy period, when he performs in Pop Village, he hides his identity behind a disguise that somehow works (Branch, every time it works: "wtf????"), and he goes by a stage name.
Hype
Officially the group leader, but he's more of a mediator than anything. He relies on the rest of the group to give their input for any big band decisions, but he coordinates band meetings, schedules gigs, and works out compromises if there's any group conflicts.
He and Branch had been childhood friends before The Incident(s) estranged them. Back in the Troll Tree, they'd been neighbors whose parents (Branch's grandma; Hype's mom) set up on frequent playdates, so they'd been really close.
They reconnected after the events of movie 1, Hype introduced Branch to Trickee and later Boom. Trickee brought in Ablaze and the rest was history.
Hype is a social butterly but he's otherwise one of the more calm personalities in the group. He feeds off of other people's energy and is a bit of a people-pleaser. Luckily, he's pretty good at finding the right crowd to run with, otherwise he'd probably land in so much trouble.
Boom
Hype's cousin, and a big party person! Before the band took off, he DJ'd at a party venue in Pop Village. That same place was also where Kismet got their first gig!
He loves loud music and flashy parties where he can shine on the dance floor and make memories people he may only know for a night.
Peak ADHD Energy™. He's a chatterbox. He has no volume control. He tunnel visions so hard, he becomes that B99 headphones meme. The man has cool guy syndrome, no doubt about it!
For the creation of the Band earliest albums, Boom took charge as the producer. He loves messing with music, mixing and remixing sounds on his free time and experimenting with the genre.
Trickee
A thrill-seeking menace to society. He's adventurous and loves taking huge risks for the adrenaline rush. He's the type of guy who would go down a waterfall in a barrel or ski down a dangerous mountain just to see if he survives it.
Everyone in the band is in agreement about protecting Trickee from his own shenanigans. They are 70% of his self-preservation senses.
He also loves a party scene and can often be found with Boom leading the charge towards any good time.
You know that sense of dread before performing in front of a crowd? The way your belly flips and your heart races and you're sure you're shaking hard enough for everyone to see? Trickee lives for that shit when he's in the band. The jitters can get to him, for sure, but afterwards, the man is LIVING from coming out alive on the other side, and he's sharing that thrill with everyone else in the band!
Ablaze
A Rock Troll who has lived among the Pop Trolls since he was a teenager. He stumbled across them while looking for a place to belong, and despite what he was raised to believe about Pop Trolls, he came to love their warmth and friendliness. So he moved in and let everyone assume he was just an odd-looking Pop Troll.
He an Trickee are housemates (podmates?)--not for romantic reasons but because they're longtime friends. When Trickee moved out of his family's home, Ablaze invited him over, and they liked the living arrangement enough to keep it permanent.
At first, Ablaze isn't open about his identity as a Rock Troll, but as he grew closer with the other members of Kismet, he came out to them. By the events of Trolls 2, he's open about being a Rock Troll.
Ablaze's personality sits somewhere in the realm of both chaotic and laid back. On the outside, he's usually pretty chill, but if Boom or Trickee have trouble afoot, Ablaze is usually there egging them on in the background, much to Branch's dismay.
He becomes extremely energetic when he's performing. The more exciting the song, the more vibrant he becomes! The energy is one of the reasons he loves pop music so much, but he can also get hyped from performing rock music. He gets kinda intense though lmao.
The first time the rest of Kismet sees him jamming to rock, they're like "OH. He's definitely a rock troll O_O" They support their rock-n-roll brethren 🤟😔
He has a special interest in fire, particularly fireworks. Back in Pop Village, he even made a business of it, making small rockets, sparklers, and other celebratory items for all your Pop party needs.
Anyway that's all the headcannon stuff I'll share for now. Hope y'all liked reading xD I'm really hoping my attention span will stick around long enough for me to share more in the future, because this fixation has been A Time™/pos

it's possible I made an extended playlist to give context to the classical (non-technically speaking) music in OFMD, with the pieces listed in historical/chronological order, and in the context of their full pieces (mostly - I'm not literally going to put entire operas on there, but symphonies and concertos have mostly been finished)
and it's possible that that playlist is ten hours long
and it's possible you can find it on spotify right now, and that below the cut is the full chronology
(edit: corrections welcome btw!!!! i am by no means a music historian, nor have any higher level music education, just a lifelong association and interest <3 if you know better than me, PLEASE let me know so it can be more accurate!)
N: most of the Vivaldi pieces don't really have any dates I could find, so they're just sort of scattered through the first few decades of the 18th century. and yes, technically the opening Corelli isn't in there, but I think putting another La Folia in is important for the context of s2!

WIP Excerpt - Aaron Hotchner x teen!reader
I thought I would share just a little snippet of a project I'm working on. It's a series about Aaron meeting a teenager on a case who ends up being involved, and there's just something so familiar about her...
Reader does use she/her pronouns.
Tumblr media
Everyone had that one touchy subject that seemed to bring back memories of events and cases past. Everyone knew that J.J. was the one who was affected by cases involving children.
But this time it was Hotch who felt his chest restrict with each new fact presented. With every body found the pressure of solving this case felt ten times heavier on his shoulders.
On his nightstand, the alarm clock’s neon blue numbers read 3:22 A.M. He was pacing around the hotel room, mind racing a mile a minute. The facts and theories of the case were incredibly confusing. Everytime the team got close, something drastic changed and they were at square one.
Four young, innocent girls were dead, and a fifth was going to be soon if they didn’t shape up.
Hotch glanced out the window of the third story room to see a small diner in the plaza across the street. On its left there was a tobacco store with big yellow block lettering covering the window pains with advertisements promoting vapes and discounted cartons of Mavericks. To its right there was a laundromat, with a few letters of the sign tilted from rusted out nails crumbling away instead of holding it fast. The glowing blue and pink sign on the diner read “open 24 hours”, though it flickered out every few seconds. Glancing at the clock on the wall, he sighed.
Nothing was getting done in this small room, and the diner would have coffee. He had heard before the coffee from 24 hour diners was always better. He doubted that to be true, but at least it would be caffeinated.
He grabbed the coat off of the chair in the corner of the room, and quietly left, locking the door behind him.
It was a short walk across the street. He pushed open the door, and a bell jingled.
Soft sounds of 70’s music filled his ears. His eyes found a pastel yellow and mint green jukebox in the corner. It was your typical retro themed diner. Checkerboard flooring, blue and pink booths and tables, milkshake decals on the wall, and a long bar that a waitress was cleaning with a rag. With the typical 50’s decorations and colors, but 70’s music playing and newspapers from the 80’s on the wall, the establishment seemed to lack a general knowledge on what decade it was supposed to be emulating. Nonetheless, there was a pot of coffee sitting behind the counter, and it wasn’t like this was the strangest 3 A.m. experience he had ever had.
Hotch looked away and sat at the counter, waiting patiently for the waitress to meander her way over to him. She finished wiping down the section of counter she had been working on and dropped the rag in a basket beneath the counter. Finally, she looked over at him.
20-24 year old girl, medium build, round face, brown eyes, umber skin, and dark black waves of hair. She shouldn’t be working alone at night, he thought. Not with a killer on the loose.
“What can I get for you?” She asked, all but rolling her eyes. Her name tag said “Marisa”.
“Just a coffee please.” He said quietly.
“Black?”
He nodded.
As she went across the room to fill up a mug, he took a moment to revel in the peace he rarely got to feel while on a case.
The soft lighting and low music was almost comforting, in an odd way. He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled.
Marisa set the mug of steaming coffee in front of him. “Just brewed a new pot, so you’re lucky.”
“Thanks-”
The jingling of the door interrupted him.
“Marisa, darling!” A feminine voice cooed.
The waitress had a look of annoyance flash across her face before she quickly covered and plastered on a smile.
“Julie, welcome in. Go ahead and take your usual booth. I’ll get you a coffee and… I’m so sorry sweetheart, what’s your name again?”
“Y/N. I’ll have orange juice, please.”
At the mention of her name Hotch looked over his shoulder. Y/N was dressed in a pair of plaid pajama pants and an oversized hoodie. Her shoulders were hunched and as she sat down in the both, she immediately curled into the corner, like it was supporting her. Dark circles hung under her eyes and as he watched, she put a hand up to her mouth to hide a yawn.
It was early Thursday morning. And unless there was something going on that he didn’t know about, she had school in four hours. What was she doing up?

The Scottish actor David McCallum was born on 19th September 1933.
Born as David Keith McCallum, Jr in Maryhill, Glasgow, the second of two sons of Dorothy Dorman, a cellist, and orchestral violinist David McCallum Sr. When he was three, his family moved to London for his father to play as concertmaster in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Early in the Second World War, he was evacuated back to Scotland, where he lived with his mother at Gartocharn by Loch Lomond.
McCallum won a scholarship to University College School, a boys’ independent school in Hampstead, London, where, encouraged by his parents to prepare for a career in music, he played the oboe.In 1946 he began doing boy voices for the BBC radio repertory company. Also involved in local amateur drama, at age 17, he appeared as Oberon in an open-air production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Play and Pageant Union. He left school at age 18 and was conscripted, joining the 3rd Battalion the Middlesex Regiment, which was seconded to the Royal West African Frontier Force. In March 1954 he was promoted to Lieutenant. After leaving the army he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (also in London), where Joan Collins was a classmate.
David McCallum’s acting career has spanned six decades; however, these days he is best known for his starring role on the police procedural NCIS as medical examiner as Dr. Donald “Ducky Mallard. I first really remember McCallum for his role in another US show, The Invisible Man which ran for 13 episodes in the 70’s. McCallum by then was a veteran of many TV and Film roles, starting in the 50’s including Our Mutual Friend and The Eustace Diamonds, in the 60’s he was in several ITV Playhouse shows before moving across the Atlantic to take roles in The Outer Limits and his big break as Illya Kuryakin in several incantations of The Man from Uncle.
His most notable films were The Greatest Story Ever Told as Judas Iscariot and of course Ashley-Pitt ‘Dispersal’ in The Great Escape.
As well as the aforementioned Invisible Man in the 70’s he took time to pop back over to our shores to star in two quality series, as Flt. Lt. Simon Carter in Colditz and Alan Breck Stewart in an adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson’s, Kidnapped.
The 80’s saw him team up with the lovely Joanna Lumley in Sapphire & Steel and several guest roles in the likes of The A Team, Hart to Hart and Murder, She Wrote as well as a one off reprise of Illya in the TV movie The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Fifteen Years Later Affair.
The 90’s saw David in Cluedo and Trainer on our TV screens over here and American science-fiction series VR-5 in the states..
During the last 20 years or so he has been in the kids TV show, Ben 10: Omniverse as the voice of Professor Paradox and of course Donald Horatio “Ducky” Mallard in a remarkable  436 episodes of the popular NCIS.
David has been married twice. He married his first wife Jill Ireland in 1957. They met on the set of the movie Hell Drivers. Together, they had two sons and a daughter, Paul, Jason and Valentine, with Jason being the only one who was adopted. In 1963, David introduced Jill to his co-star on The Great Escape, Charles Bronson, and she left David and married Charles in 1968. In 1967,
David McCallum passed away aged 90 on September 23rd last year, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Katherine McCallum, his sons Paul McCallum, Valentine McCallum and Peter McCallum, his daughter Sophie McCallum and his eight grandchildren. NCIS paid tribute to him in an episode called The Stories We Leave Behind when the tagents find comfort in working on one of his unfinished cases. The episode features clips from several old shows.

Nobody asked for this but last night I couldn’t sleep and my only thought was ‘wait what kind of music does the firefam listen to????’. So, here are my opinions:
Bobby: dad rock. I mean it. 70’s and early 80’s music is his jam. Even at his most depressed he still accepted to go to a Springsteen concert with the probie. David Bowie is like his hero tho.
Athena: she still listens to the same stuff she used to listen to while in college and before Emmett died. Late eighties/early nineties RnB mostly.
Hen Wilson: I feel like her playlist would be a bit all over the place time wise BUT what all the artists she listens to have in common is that they’re either self-made women (particularly self-made black women) or big sapphic names in music. She loves Rihanna a lot, but Chappell Roan has been on a loop in her ears in the last couple of weeks.
Karen: I could make a joke here and say that she listens to lots of musicals but I won’t do that. She mostly likes instrumentals, quite stuff she can listen to when she studies or works. Her favourite album is the OST to Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Chimney: he does not have a favourite genre, his playlist is the current Top 50 and he has an incredible memory for them. He loves EVERYTHING. I know you guys like to believe Buck is a Swiftie, but Chimney is the one who has been listening to her religiously since Day 1. Fun fact no. 1: the only times he did not keep up with the top 50 was when Kevin died and when Maddie left for Boston. Fun fact no. 2: one day he came into the 118 singing Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter and the rest of the firefam did not know what to do with that fact.
Maddie: BALLADS BALLADS BALLADS BALLADS.
Eddie: This man cannot get himself to listen to new music to save his life. Most of the songs in his library are songs he just stumbled upon on the radio or that were part of soundtracks. For this reason, there are lots of Spanish songs from his silly little telenovelas in there. He mostly loves poetic songs. For some reason, he cried for like 30 minutes straight while listening to Dos oruguitas from Encanto for the first time
Buck: he doesn’t really listen to much music. He used to have this playlist for the gym but now that he trains at the station he loves listening to the people that he loves moving around him. When he’s driving he puts on a podcast and he tries to learn something new everyday.
Tommy: Bobby but like 20 years later. Rock music from the late eighties and early nineties. He cried when he heard that Guns n’ Roses where splitting up and was the first in line to buy Chinese Democracy when Axl Rose finally released it. He loved Kurt Cobain. He still listens to Foo Fighters. He LOVES Metallica. Enter Sandman was his favourite song for a long while but now for some reasons his favourite song is Patience by Guns n’ Roses.

"and im going to keep on loving you"
@jegulus-microfic // day 31: lock // 465 words
very very lightly implied nsfw content? blink and you'll miss it
“Well love, this is it.” James says as he walks into their first house. Their house. Our house, James likes the sound of that. “Our house.”
Regulus walks through the front door taking in the beige walls and ugly couch and is already envisioning how to bring the space to life and make it not just a house, but a home. “Excitement isn't even the right word to describe what I’m feeling right now. I am so much more than just excited.”
“Me too Reg.” James looks around the house once again, really taking in the space that is theirs now. “It needs a bit of work, but I’m ready.”
Smiling, Regulus sits down on the crusty couch and orders some food for a little ‘celebratory night.’ “Nothing fancy, but I did manage to snag some champagne.” He says, holding up the bottle he stashed in his tote bag.
“Perfect.” James leans in to kiss Regulus, but Regulus pulls away.
“Not so fast love,” he wags his finger at James, “the food will be here in less than 20 minutes, and do you not remember what happened last time we got carried away when we ordered food?”
“But-”
“No buts.”
James nods, albeit a bit disappointed. “Well, at least I can kiss you wherever I want now. No more hiding in bedrooms because Sirius didn’t want to see us.” They both laugh, because they do remember the many nights that James and Regulus would kiss domestically in the kitchen or living room, and Sirius would audibly gag.
“And, we don’t have to lock our bedroom door at night either.” Regulus smirks.
“I like the way you think Reggie.”
Their food comes shortly after, and they pop open the bottle of champagne. Regulus gives James a green light, and James can’t take his hands off of Regulus. It feels a little gross doing it on the dirty couch, so they take it up to the bedroom, where they don’t lock the doors.
/ / /
Years and years and years later, people would talk about the couple who lived down the street, who were so clearly in love. People would watch the two men adopt a daughter, and foster more than one cat.
People would catch them dancing and kissing and laughing in the rain, and then reading and laying next to each other in the sun. And if you were inside, you could see them baking in the kitchen and having dance parties in their living room to old 70's and 80's music.
They would hear screams of joy when they had their friends over. They also hear the long phone calls at night when one of the two had to be away for work.
But whatever it was people saw and heard, they could feel the love.
well, this is it folks, the end of this little vingette series! i had a lot of fun growing thier realtionship, and kinda watching my verison of them come to life <3 until next time lovlies!!

"Early Mornin' Rain" (1971-1972) + "Aloha From Hawaii" bonus performance (1973)
Recorded by Elvis Presley on March 15, 1971 at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee · First released on the album Elvis Now on February 20, 1972.
RECORDING SESSION Studio Session for RCA March 15, 1971: RCA’s Studio B, Nashville. With a three-album agenda before him, Elvis arrived on the first day of the sessions with a runny nose and aching eyes. Yet he was determined to go ahead, and his enthusiasm seemed inspired by an unlikely source: contemporary folk music. The spate of home taping he’d done during the soundtrack years reveals that Elvis had been tuned in to the folk boom since the mid-’60s, and it was through the sweet harmonies of Peter, Paul and Mary that he was introduced to songwriters like Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot. With Charlie and Red he’d harmonized for hours on songs like “Blowin’ In The Wind” and “500 Miles”; now Elvis had been listening to Peter, Paul and Mary’s interpretations of songs like “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Early Morning Rain,” “(That’s What You Get) For Lovin’ Me,” and Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and “I Shall Be Released.” Eager to work with similar textures himself, Elvis picked up on a suggestion from Charlie Hodge and brought in a male-female quartet, the Nashville Edition, to help on the sessions. The rest of the evening was devoted to Peter, Paul and Mary’s two Gordon Lightfoot numbers, “Early Morning Rain” and “For Lovin’ Me,” both grounded in the same sound: Restrained brushes from Jerry Carrigan’s drums, blended with a simple, effective bass line from Norbert Putnam. “Are you gonna play something with me?” James Burton prodded Chip Young, initiating a friendly duel between the two on acoustic guitar licks. Charlie McCoy (“the fastest harp in the West,” as one of his later solo albums dubbed him) took the solos. Each of the songs was true to its genre, but they lacked the feel the singer brought to any song when he was at his best. Elvis was having trouble. “Give me a Kleenex or something,” he asked Charlie, snorting in every pause, struggling to keep his nose clear and his voice open. After the evening sessions he checked into a Nashville hospital for treatment of what turned out to be secondary glaucoma. Elvis had been having problems with his eyes for the last few years, and no one who watched him record that night was surprised at his hospitalization.

"Early Mornin' Rain" PRIOR RECORDINGS AND RELEASES Gordon Lightfoot wrote “Early Morning Rain” in 1964 but only recorded the song himself later, releasing his recording on the 1966 album "Lightfoot."

HONORABLE MENTIONS Going to more experimental recordings, more Rock and Roll was put into the tune by the groups The Grateful Dead and We Five. The Grateful Dead recorded the song in 1965 but their recording was only released in 2001 on the album The Golden Road (1965-1973) and again on the album The Birth Of The Dead in 2003. Here's their version:

We Five released their cover still in the 70's on the album Catch The Wind (1970).

ELVIS' VERSION (1972) With Elvis’ version, Gordon Lightfoot’s most famous song features the male-female quartet The Nashville Edition. The studio version was recorded in March 1971 and released almost a year later in February 1972 on the album Elvis Now.
youtube
ALOHA FROM HAWAII (1973 — U.S. AIRING) "Early Mornin' Rain" is one of the inserted songs on the Aloha From Hawaii TV special. A live performance of Elvis' 1972 release was specially taped onstage at the H.I.C Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii, following the January 14, 1973 concert, with no audience at the venue anymore. The footage - along with 4 more bonus tracks - was requested for the US airing by NBC (April 4, 1973). In total 5 songs were live performed by Elvis in January 14, 1973 in addition to the concert setlist itself. They were almost all Hawaiian-themed songs taken from the soundtrack album "Blue Hawaii" released in 1961 ("KU-U-I-PO", "Hawaiian Wedding Song", "Blue Hawaii" and "No More") with the exception of one, "Early Mornin' Rain". However when the concert aired in the U.S. on April 4, 1973 (NBC), the live performance of "No More" was left unused while "Early Mornin' Rain" apparently was a definitive track for the American airing of the 1973 Elvis special, for some reason. Director Marty Pasetta used split screens to show Elvis singing (he is alone on screen, no musician was shown behind him as usual for his live performances) while the rest of the screen was completed with scenes filmed in Hawaii - from staged romantic scenes to Hula dancers - showing the peaceful beauty of the island. Below we have the raw footage and then the final edit that aired in the U.S. television post concert.
MUSICIANS: Guitar: James Burton, John Wilkinson, Elvis Presley, Charlie Hodge. Bass: Jerry Scheff. Drums: Ronnie Tutt. Piano: Glen D. Hardin. Vocals: Kathy Westmoreland, The Sweet Inspirations, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, Joe Guercio and His Orchestra.
youtube
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Since "No More" was the only other non-Hawaiian-themed song to be taped for the Aloha From Hawaii airing in the U.S., I wonder what made Marty Pasetta decide to chose "Early Mornin' Rain" to complete the final cut of the Aloha special for the U.S. audience. Considering "No More" has the Hawaiian feeling present in its sound, which would make the song fit very well on that TV special and the vibe of the 3 other songs selected as - per say - bonus material, why it was left out? Perhaps it was a request from Elvis? Or either a request from the Colonel Parker and RCA Records, in a try to boost the sales of Elvis' last contemporary album released previously, in 1972, in which that song was released? I haven't read any books specifically about the Aloha From Hawaii yet, so if you happen to know something about the selection of the songs for this extra portion of the Aloha From Hawaii special, please, share it in the comments.
All I know it that I was really happy to see "Early Mornin' Rain" performed live on the Aloha From Hawaii special because I absolutely LOVE Elvis' recording of this song. I think Elvis' cover of that classic Gordon Lightfoot penned-tune remains oddly underrated.
