🎶✨ when u get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, and publish. then, send this ask/tag 10 of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool)✨🎶
Woop I got tagged! I love these so thank you so much @bakersimmer for tagging me!
My spotify gets updated sporadically every few months or so with a couple songs I’m obsessed with and then listen to on repeat (i don’t make dedicated playlists) so its a weird mismatch of stuff.
Five songs:
1. Through The Looking Glass by DI-RECT, heard it in the car a few weeks ago and now its my dance song! as in I jam out on it in the shower while pretending im on stage lmao
2. Reflecting Light by Sam Phillips, GILMORE GIRLS! I’ve been rewatching it lately and this song showed up and I somehow noticed it for the first time and absolutely love it
3. Forest Whitaker by Bad Books, the lyrics confused me so I analyzed them and they still confused me so now I just sing along and get the nice vibes.
4. Don’t You Worry Child by Swedish House Mafia, rediscovered the song on tiktok, got reminded of my childhood and singing along, immediately added it to my spotify.
5. I Hope by Gabby Barrett, I have a great partner, I don’t need a break up song, doesn’t stop me from yelling the lyrics dramatically everytime though.
Thank you again for tagging me! I am tagging @justkeeponsimming @starmoonsims @adair-the-bard @nightlifeseries  @sunflowersweetum  @faetheegrey  @yooniesim
If anyone else sees this and wants to participate go ahead and don’t feel pressured if you don’t want to do it! :)

Who Let The Dogs Out (of Great Britain)? Canines in Paranormal Animals of North America for Shadowrun (1st Edition)
A couple years ago I ran a short 3rd Edition Shadowrun campaign over the summer where all of the player characters were Orks or Trolls (the “All-Trog” Campaign). Knowing that in the summer campaigns are like romances (they never last…), I didn’t put a lot of work into developing any unique scenarios, so I just adapted the 1st Edition module Elven Fire.
Tumblr media
In this adventure, the PCs are hired to investigate a recent uptick of Elven gang violence, and having Orks and Trolls be the “good” guys gave it kind of an anti-LOTR vibe. Anyway, there’s a scene where the runners are tracking down a bad guy and trying to keep him from escaping via helicopter. In addition to some supplementary goons to fight, the Baddie had two guard dogs that attack the party.
Me (GM): The two dogs are running at you. What do you do?
Player #1: I… Uh, I shoot the dog.
Player #2: HOW COULD YOU SHOOT A DOG?!?!
Player #1: It’s coming right at me!
Player #2: Yeah but it’s a dog! You don’t shoot a dog!
The combat eventually ended with the runners capturing the baddie and subduing the other guard dog. Player #2 then made this rescued guard dog his pet.
The point is: People Love Dogs. Even in the Sixth World.
Tumblr media
See? You love this.
The 1st Edition core book had the Barghest, and I feel like I have already discussed it, and its mammary glands, SO MUCH. I think that’s partly to do with the fact that, I admit, I had no idea what it was for a while. There isn’t a picture of it in the book, and when I first played I didn’t read its description closely enough to note that it resembles a mastiff. Probably distracted by other information.
Tumblr media
The barghest does show up in Monster Manual II for D&D, sorry, for AD&D (in 1983), but again, no picture. There, it’s some kind of demonic dog-goblin. It finally got a picture in the 3rd Edition D&D Monster Manual, where it’s a weregoblinwolf (a werewolf where the human form is actually a goblin form).
Tumblr media
It smells better in its wolf form.
The Shadowrun barghest drops all of the shapeshifting (though there are shapeshifters, they are animals that take on human form, rather than humans that take on animal form) and goblin (which are HMHVV-infected dwarves) business to just make it a Spooky Dog whose howl paralyzes you.
The barghest is but one example of a common motif in folklore, that of the Black Dog, sometimes ghostly but generally associated with death. What’s interesting is that the vast majority of instances of the Black Dog are in the British Isles:
youtube
Exhibit 1.
While you can find examples of “ghost dogs” in other regions (such as the two-headed Cerberus in Greek mythology, Fenris in Norse mythology, and Forest Whitaker in Jim Jarmusch mythology), it is quintessentially British.
Tumblr media
Exhibit 2?
That the barghest would exist in North America would not be surprising, given that, over the years, a handful of Brits made their way to America. What’s weird is that Paranormal Animals of North America introduces four new Spooky Dogs that are just re-skinned (or re-furred) barghests.
The Bogie, which makes accidents happen and is allergic to horseradish.
Tumblr media
Hopefully it doesn’t make you spill a jar of horseradish.
The Gabriel Hound, which can make itself almost look human.
Tumblr media
Unlike the Peter Gabriel Hound, which only makes stop motion Claymation videos
The Hellhound, which breathes fire.
Tumblr media
Nothing clever to say here because it’s pretty badass.
Finally, the Shadowhound, which is a hound that creates shadows.
Tumblr media
Perfect for it to run in...
Why are these in North America and not in Britain?
Sure, Paranormal Animals of Europe would come out later, for 2nd Edition, but it introduced precisely zero new British Black Dogs, and these 5 already in existence were only briefly mentioned.
Maybe post-Brexit they decided to shove off across the pond?

10 Horror Movies Starring Your Favorite Avengers, Ranked by Scariness
Superhero actors often make their bones in similar action or comedy movies, if not just other comic book adaptations. But the genre has grown to such a size, and incorporated such a high number of talented actors, that you can find your favorite heroes in some unusually horrific situations. You just need to know where to look and, preferably, what you’ll find when you get there. (Unless you’re the kind of person who likes to roll the dice with their horror movies.)
Here’s ten horror movies starring actors who double-up as members of the Avengers in the MCU, ranked from the least scary to the most.
RELATED: 10 Campy Horror Movies To Watch If You Liked Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark
10 Repentance
Tumblr media
Starring Anthony Mackie (A.K.A. The Falcon), Phillipe Caland’s psychological horror movie sees a life coach, played by Mackie, taking up the job of one-on-one therapy sessions with Forest Whitaker’s deeply troubled renovator. When it becomes apparent that Whitaker’s character suffers from a psychological haunting that may border on the spiritual, and that Mackie’s coach has many demons of his own, their relationship takes a dark turn.
Though mostly more on the thriller side of horror, Repentance does stray into the torture area of things once the situation fully deteriorates. It’s a movie that possesses a lot of the hallmarks of Bad Movie Syndrome but it’s undeniably bolstered by the performances of Mackie, Whitaker and – surprisingly enough – comedian Mike Epps on solid dramatic form.
9 Priest
Tumblr media
Starring Paul Bettany (A.K.A. Vision), Priest is a big screen adaptation of the Korean comic of the same name by Hyung Min-woo. It follows Bettany’s titular Priest (a practically superhuman vampire hunter living in a post-apocalyptic world where his services are no longer needed) on his quest to rescue his niece from a vampire plot.
RELATED: Ranked: Every Version Of Vampires On TV/Movies
Priest, like the comic it’s based on, is really a mishmash of a number of genres from martial arts action to Westerns. Its horror elements go hand-in-hand with the undead monsters at the heart of its story, falling more on the action-horror side of the equation. Fans of the Blade movies will be familiar with it.
8 Gothika
Tumblr media
Starring Robert Downey Jr. (A.K.A. Iron Man), Gothika is the Hollywood debut of acclaimed French director and actor Mathieu Kassovitz. It follows Halle Berry’s psychiatrist as she awakes to a nightmare scenario where she’s institutionalized in her own hospital after apparently murdering her loving husband. Downey Jr. plays a colleague trying to get to the bottom of things in this unusual thriller/chiller.
Gothika's horror, while supernatural in many instances, is mostly psychological but the movie has its fair share of gore in certain scenes. It fits more neatly under the category of 'disturbing' than it does 'frightening', with its central mystery playing comfortably to the conventions of the ghost genre.
7 Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
Tumblr media
Starring Paul Rudd (A.K.A. Ant-Man) in his movie debut as Tommy Doyle, a young character from John Carpenter’s original Halloween movie, The Curse of Michael Myers is the last of a kind of trilogy of Halloween sequels before the series began continually rebooting itself.
Its production troubles resulted in two very different versions of the movie existing for public consumption, each with pros and cons. You could call the original theatrical version scarier, as it adds some much more graphic kills, but the so-called Producer’s Cut has the benefit of making a little more sense.
6 Silent House
Tumblr media
Starring Elizabeth Olsen (A.K.A. Scarlet Witch), Silent House is another psychological horror movie but presented in a very unique way. The movie, like the original Uruguayan movie La Casa Muda from which it’s adapted, is presented as one continuous take. Meaning there are no visible cuts as it follows its main character, played by Olsen, in real time.
RELATED: The 10 Most Haunting Ghost Movies Of The 2010s, Ranked
It follows Olsen’s character’s nerve-racking journey through an old family home as instances of trauma from her past begin to manifest around her in a ghostly fashion. It’s overall style and presentation will seem familiar to lovers of modern horror video games.
5 The Cabin in the Woods
Tumblr media
Drew Goddard’s hugely entertaining monster mash horror comedy doesn’t skimp on either the frights or the laughs. As the title suggests, it riffs on the conventions of the supernatural slasher genre, with a just pre-career-explosion Chris Hemsworth (A.K.A. Thor) perfectly cast as the stock jock. But The Cabin in the Woods evolves into an examination of the horror genre itself, eventually folding in every type of phobia and thing that goes bump in the night that you can think of.
Things get progressively wilder and wilder as the movie progresses, leading to a parade of highly creative kills in a blood-soaked finale.
4 The Midnight Meat Train
Tumblr media
Based on a short story from Hellraiser and Candyman creator Clive Barker, The Midnight Meat Train stars Bradley Cooper (A.K.A. Rocket Raccoon) as a photographer who falls down a deep and dark rabbit hole of grisly murder when he seeks more shocking photo opportunities on the subway system at night.
The Midnight Meat Train is a movie that starts out pretty dark but there’s not much that can prepare you for how just how horrifically weird things get. Gory, macabre, and not necessarily a movie you should watch if you want to look at Bradley Cooper the same way ever again.
3 28 Weeks Later
Tumblr media
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s sequel to Danny Boyle’s game-changing, rejuvenating, surprise zombie hit 28 Days Later surprised audiences in its own ways. To get a truly original-feeling genre movie of that type was shocking enough the first time it happened. But to get a sequel that amped up the scale and the action and the threat, while keeping the emotional intensity at an incredibly high standard, was something that beat phenomenal odds.
RELATED: The 5 Scariest Zombie Films (And The 5 Funniest)
Jeremy Renner (A.K.A. Hawkeye) plays a US military sniper overseeing the rebuilding of London after the zombie apocalypse of the first movie. When things go bad again, a chain of shocking, visceral, events plays out as he attempts to protect a group of survivors.
2 Oculus
Tumblr media
Starring Karen Gillan (A.K.A. Nebula), Oculus was a landmark moment for both director Mike Flanagan (adapting the movie from an earlier short film of his own) and Gillan on their journeys into the spotlight. The movie’s classical American horror story, about a haunted mirror standing in as a traditional metaphor for the horror of losing one’s grip on reality, established Flanagan as a filmmaker able to weave complex character-based horror stories with real staying power.
Effective in its build-up, but never afraid to take the terror to dark and delirious places, Oculus is a movie that accomplishes a lot with relatively little and showcases exactly why Flanagan would go on to be trusted with several Stephen King adaptations.
1 Under the Skin
Tumblr media
Scarlett Johansson (A.K.A. Black Widow) plays an alien Siren on the streets of Scotland, hunting for prey to seduce and lure back to her lair to be slowly digested, in Jonathan Glazer’s one-of-a-kind sci-fi nightmare.
Johansson’s unflinching performance sees her interact with a number of non-professional actors in key sequences throughout the movie, often on the street with hidden cameras, and it intensifies the otherworldly feeling flowing through Under the Skin. Whether it be the tone of the scenes, or Mica Levi’s haunting music, Under the Skin is all but guaranteed to mess with your brain in one way or another.

Star Wars The Bad Batch: What You Need to Watch Before Starting the Show
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The Bad Batch is the newest animated chapter in the Star Wars saga. Set immediately after Revenge of the Sith, the show explores the rise of the Empire from the perspective of a group of “genetically mutated” clones who never fit in with their own kind and fit in even less after Order 66. Unlike the rest of the Clone Army, the members of Clone Force 99 (the official designation of the group nicknamed “The Bad Batch”) are unaffected by the secret inhibitor chips implanted in their brains, which quickly puts a target on their back, especially after they refuse to execute Jedi on the battlefield.
Clone Force 99 find themselves in the middle of a sea change they don’t fully understand, as Palpatine declares himself Emperor and the Clone Army turns evil. To make matters worse, Admiral Tarkin (the future Grand Moff of A New Hope) sees the clone forces as obsolete and wants to replace them with a new Imperial army. On the run and without purpose, the Bad Batch will have to carve out a new future for themselves in a much more hostile galaxy.
In many ways, The Bad Batch is really a sequel to The Clone Wars, which spent much more time chronicling the lives of the soldiers than the Prequel Trilogy ever did. But that doesn’t mean you’ll have to watch all of The Clone Wars to understand what’s going on in The Bad Batch. In fact, all you need to know about Clone Force 99 is pretty much covered in the series premiere, “Aftermath.” That said, if you’re one of those fans who likes to be really thorough, here are a few other movies and TV episodes you should watch to get the full backstory of what’s going on in The Bad Batch:
Revenge of the Sith
To be completely honest, Revenge of the Sith is the only thing you’ll really need to have watched to understand what’s going on in the first episode of The Bad Batch. In fact, the first half of “Aftermath” takes place around the same time as the third act of the Prequel Trilogy closer, with the Bad Batch witnessing the atrocities of Order 66 with their own eyes.
Revenge of the Sith shows us Order 66 from the point of view of newly-anointed Sith apprentice Anakin Skywalker as well as the many Jedi who are about to get executed across the galaxy. We watch as Anakin, now known as Darth Vader, massacres his former brethren inside the Jedi Temple on Coruscant (even younglings), while masters like Aayla Secura, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Plo Koon are slaughtered by their own clone forces.
The Bad Batch are confused as they watch the other clones turn on their Jedi general, and refuse to partake in the extermination. It’s the scene that truly sets up Clone Force 99 as the heroes of this story.
Later in the episode, fans also get to see another key moment from Revenge of the Sith from the clone perspective. This time, the Bad Batch gather with the rest of the Clone Army on Kamino to watch a hologram of Palpatine declare the formation of the first Galactic Empire. It’s almost a complete word-for-word recreation of the scene in the movie, complete with the voice of Ian McDiarmid.
If you want a better sense of the gravity of Order 66, and how Palpatine’s machinations led to the fall of the Republic and the Jedi, you’ll want to watch this movie.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
The Clone Wars Season 7 Episodes 1-4
While I’d even count “The Bad Batch” arc of The Clone Wars as optional, it is technically the first Star Wars adventure starring Clone Force 99. In this season 7 arc, Hunter, Wrecker, Tech, and Crosshair team up with Clone Commander Rex and Anakin to rescue Echo, a clone soldier who was once thought dead but has actually become an involuntary pawn in the Separatist war machine.
These episodes flesh out how the genetic mutations of each member of the Bad Batch makes them unique, and how these abilities sometimes cause friction with the “normal” clones. Hunter and his team are more individualistic, more prone to breaking the rules, which doesn’t earn them many friends within a society that expects them to follow all orders without question.
The second half of this arc also acts as an origin story for how Echo became the fifth member of the Bad Batch. It’s a pretty gruesome tale, but there’s also plenty of action if you want to see just how efficient Clone Force 99 are when it comes to blowing up droids.
The Clone Wars Season 7 Episodes 9-12
The final four-episode arc of The Clone Wars, titled “Siege of Mandalore,” is also the best of the entire series. While it doesn’t feature the Bad Batch at all, it does give us yet one other perspective on the events of Order 66. This time, we see the massacre from the point of view of the heroic Ahsoka Tano, Commander Rex, and the scheming Maul, who’s declared himself ruler of the Mandalorian home world.
The arc begins as a straightforward mission led by Ahsoka and Rex to capture Maul once and for all, but plans quickly change when Darth Sidious sets Order 66 in motion. While we all know the twist is coming, “Siege of Mandalore” still provides a shocking and exciting conclusion to Ahsoka’s story on The Clone Wars, while also showing the true cost of war.
The events of “Siege of Mandalore” happen somewhat at the same time as the first episode of The Bad Batch so watching this arc should give you a fuller picture of everything going on at the end of the war. We also know that Rex will appear on The Bad Batch, so these episodes are a good primer on who he is, too.
Other Clone Stories
When it comes to a franchise as expansive as Star Wars, I truly believe you should just watch the stuff you enjoy as opposed to sitting through every single episode or movie just to check off boxes. (For example, in my opinion, you can skip most of The Clone Wars in general and just watch these episodes.) But if you’re hellbent on being a completionist, you can also add Attack of the Clones as well as the first four episodes of The Clone Wars season 6 to your watchlist.
Attack of the Clones covers the start of the Clone Wars as well as the conspiracy behind the creation of the Clone Army. For a chunk of the movie’s runtime, we follow Obi-Wan Kenobi as he tracks a Separatist plot to assassinate Senate Padme Amidala. Once he learns the name of the bounty hunter trying to kill Padme, this leads him to Kamino, a distant planet where scientists are hard at work creating a massive army for a war to come. It’s in this movie that we learn that Jango Fett provided the genetic template for the entire Clone Army, which is why all the soldiers look just like him.
Interestingly enough, The Bad Batch indirectly addresses how that template has been stretched thin in the eyars since the opening salvo of the Clone Wars. It explains why new clones like the mysterious Omega are so different to the original template as well as why the Bad Batch developed genetic mutations.
Recurring Kaminoan characters on the animated series like Lama Su and Taun also made their first appearances in Attack of the Clones. Kaminoan scientist Nala Se recurred on The Clone Wars.
Meanwhile, The Clone Wars season 6 episodes 1-4 focus on a clone named Fives. After a clone trooper slays a Jedi on the battlefield, Fives is thrust into a conspiracy involving a plan to mind control the Clone Army with an inhibitor chip, the same one that will eventually force the clones to execute Order 66. Fives plans to uncover the truth behind the chips and reveal it to the galaxy before it’s too late. You can pretty much guess how that went…
Fennec Shand and Saw Gerrera
These next ones are also optional.
The trailers for The Bad Batch have already revealed that assassin Fennec Shand will appear on the show. This fan-favorite live-action character played by Ming-Na Wen was first introduced in The Mandalorian. Without spoiling anything, Fennec goes through her own kind of transformation on the live-action series that will likely be further explored on The Book of Boba Fett, where she’ll share top billing with Temuera Morrison’s beloved bounty hunter.
In The Bad Batch, we’ll get to see Fennec decades prior to her adventures on The Mandalorian. What was she up to years before she crossed paths with Din Djarin? We’re excited to find out!
And finally, there’s Saw Gerrera, another character we know will cameo on the show. He was first introduced in The Clone Wars season 5 episodes 2-5 and later appeared in Rogue One, played by Forest Whitaker. When we first meet Saw, he’s leading a rebellion against Separatist invaders on the planet Onderon. But, as Saw will learn on The Bad Batch, the fight for freedom just leads to another system of tyranny when the Empire comes into power. It’s a painful truth all of the heroes of the new animated series will be forced to discover.

My Thoughts on Black Panther
With Guardians of the Galaxy, the first one that is… It hit enough of the key nostalgia points for my childhood that no movie would ever be able to realistically top. There have been better movies made, naturally, but it connected with me on a level that goes right into the core childhood youth of mine, that used to sit up and watch cheesy sci-fi movies like Starcrash and Spacehunter: Adventures into the Forbidden Zone, and a love for interstellar space dramas like The Last Starfighter, all in one fell swoop. GotG was a movie that spoke to me as a (then) 39 year old nerd that has craved this kind of science fiction adventure for nearly two decades. And it delivered. So for the sake of all fairness, I am removing the first GotG movie from my statement here.
Now, for some dumb reason… Probably love for the media that inspires them… I try to see every single comic book movie that gets made. I haven’t seen them all, but I’ve seen a lot. Including some obscure bullshit you’d be like “Wait, they made a movie of THAT?!” or even more so “Wait, THAT was based on a comic?” So I try to be fair and watch as many as I can. Not just superhero movies, but even those based on independent and smaller, lesser known books, like American Splendor, Road to Perdition and Ghost World. And it kind of goes without saying that the Marvel movies are generally all pretty damn good, and even their weakest entires, like Thor: Dark World or Iron Man 2 is still very watchable.
I mean, I had some issues with Spider-Man Homecoming, but I didn’t hate the movie. And if it was one, I’d watch it again. There’s plenty to like about it. Doctor Strange was basically a magical retelling of Iron Man’s origin all over again… But there was enough fun in it to make me like it a lot. Ant-Man wasn’t perfect, but it was funny and I actually liked it more than Avengers: Age of Ultron. Thor: Ragnarok? The more I think about that movie, the more I love it. So when the Marvel movies are weak, they’re still pretty good. And when they are good, they are exceptional.
So, with all that said, what is my thoughts on Black Panther?
It was the greatest comic book movie I have ever seen. It’s certainly one of the best movies I have ever seen.
This was a 2 hour and 15 minute movie and it did NOT feel that way. It was well written and it was engaging. The superheroics take a total backseat to an actual Shakespearian Epic about family legacies and betrayals. I was drawn into the world of Wakanda and I never questioned it once. Usually in a lot of comic book movies… And really a lot of movie genres to be honest… There’s this lull point, there it kinda drags a bit. GotG had it. So did it’s sequel. All three Cap movies did. All three Iron Mans. Ant-Man did. The Avengers did. Power Rangers, Wonder Woman, all three of the Disney Star Wars movies… But roughly around the latter half of the second act, things drag a bit. Usually taking it’s time to have the hero shown to the world and stuff. Black Panther does not have that lull point. It was engaging the entire way through. The biggest problem with the movie is that I never thought T’Challa was in danger, because I knew he was in Avengers: Infinity War. And that’s one of the movie’s greatest strengths is that there is no real connection to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Or sure, there’s Ulysses Klaue and Agent Ross from earlier movies. But they’re treated in a way that if you do not remember then at all… It’s okay. There’s no cameo’s by Iron Man or Captain America. No mentioned of the Sokovia Accords or the Infinity Gems. This is entirely it’s own movie. Only the post-credit stinger has any major connection. And really, by this point in time with the Marvel movies, that should be obvious. (And who’s in it should be obvious too.)
The acting? Jesus, these actors and actresses are all amazing. Chadwick Boseman is a king and hero that anyone can look up to and respect. He is masculine in the most non-toxic way possible. You can feel is frustration and his anger to the situations he’s put in. And Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger… Jordan is an amazing actor, who’s talents only grow every year. He is up there with Loki and the Vulture as one of the most defined villains in the Marvel movies. More importantly, you can actually understand, even sympathize, with him. He’s still a bad guy, but you get where he’s coming from. He won’t get it, because it’a comic book movie… But he deserves at least an Oscar nod for the role. Both the characters of Nakia and Okoye (played by Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira respectively) both are amazing scene stealing characters. But the highlight of the movie was Letitia Wright as Shuri, T’Challa’s younger genius sister who’s responsible for the advance technology that Wakanda enjoys. Her enthusiasm is endearing and addictive. Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett… Look. EVERYONE in this movie is amazing and they sell their roles convincingly.
Was there anything bad about the movie?
No. My God, no. That’s…
Look, me and my wife saw the movie this afternoon, and it’s not 1:30 am as I’m typing this. I’ve been giving it a lot of thought, and even trying to analyze the movie, the closest I can come to with giving it any harsh criticism, is that a lot of the overall plot forms, we have seen in other superhero movies before… But even then, we haven’t seen it like THIS. Ever since I saw Fruitvale Station, I knew Ryan Coogler is a super talented director. That movie was awesome. Creed was probably the second best Rocky movie ever made… And depending on my mood, may be the best one ever made… And it doesn’t surprise me that Black Panther was this good too.
Bottom line: Black Panther is an amazing movie. Whether or not you consider it to be as good as I do is up to you.
But I’m willing to bet you are probably going to have a good time.
Wakanda Forever.

Hello Supercult West! This is Supercult South Bad Movie Professor Cameron Coker (BS in “Kumite” with a minor in “Championship Level Bullshit”) and I’m reaching out to you from across the country to help hype the true story of an American Ninja, Bloodsport!
youtube
Bloodsport is a 1988 Action, Drama, Biography starring the muscles from Brussels himself, Jean-Claude Van Damme from infamous Cannon Films. It’s a virtually plotless excuse for nut punches and shirtless fisticuffs. It’s clichéd, over the top, but nonetheless an exciting athletic showcase from everyone involved. On Rotten tomatoes it holds a 39% critic score, but a 74% audience score, it was nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst New Star, and it’s the film that kicked of Van Damme’s career and inspired the Mortal Kombat video game series. His first credited appearance in a film just two years prior was as “Gay Karate Man” in the 30-minute-long comedy, Monaco Forever.
BUT, did you know that Bloodsport is actually the true story of 1956 Toronto born martial artist/clandestine CIA operative, Frank W. Dux?
Directed by Newt Arnold, second unit director for some of the best films (Godfather 2, Bladerunner, Abyss) and primary director for…well this.
Hey! I’m meditating here! I’m meditating here! Up yours you SOB!
Donald Gibb, who plays Jackson, also played Ogre in Revenge of the Nerds!
Don’t forget, it’s not Frank Ducks, it’s Frank Dux, like “put up your dukes.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASNRZrqllbc
Did you know Forest Whitaker is in this film? Yeah, Oscar Winner Forest Whitaker! I mean he doesn’t high-kick anybody but- oh, you’re walking away…
“Aren’t you a little young for full-contact?” “Aren’t you a little old for videogames?”
In a 1980 Black Belt Magazine interview titled “Kumite: A Learning Experience”, Frank Dux revealed the truth behind his experiences. Not only was Kumite a real full contact martial arts tournament held in a private location every 5 years, but Dux did in fact receive an invitation to the event and win the 1975 Kumite. The real tournament that Dux attended was held in the Bahamas rather than in Hong Kong, but many of the other details are correct, according to Dux. Dux really was an inexpendable soldier in the U.S. Military who distinguished himself in clandestine operations in Vietnam before joining the CIA.
youtube
youtube
Regarding the Kumite tournament, Dux said, “My involvement in that tournament was part of a plan, launched in 1975, to infiltrate the criminal organizations that organized the fights. The original idea was to participate in the Kumite tournament and make a few contacts. We initially assumed I would lose, but eventually I became one of the best Kumite fighters to ever participate in the event.”
youtube
youtube
Dux’s instructor in the film is a composite of two individuals: Jack Seki and Senzo Tanaka, though Dux meeting his instructor during an attempted break in was the producer, Mark DiSalle’s idea as a clever screen time saving device. Dux’s friend Ray Jackson, played by Donald Gibb, is also a composite of two people: Richard Robinson, a jujitsu black belt and Swedish Karate champion Kurt Peterson.
Tumblr media
Dux said that the then 50-year old actor Bolo Yeung’s character in Bloodsport, Chong Li, is based on a real person as well. Dux said that the real Chong Li openly admitted to blinding Dux during their fight, like what is depicted in the film, however in reality the blinding incident was purely accidental due to beads of sweat rather than intentionally thrown powder.
youtube
youtube
Dux himself was the fight coordinator for Bloodsport and announced that Van Damme was not nearly in good enough shape for the film and put Van Damme through a 3-month training program. Van Damme a 20-something martial arts champion in his own right would later say that it was the hardest training of his life.
Tumblr media
Why did Frank Dux reveal these secrets in the Black Belt magazine interview? As an open challenge encouraging other to fight in the Kumite circuit I championed. Now that is truly badass.
youtube
youtube
youtube
…Or it could all be a complete fabrication by a professional bullshitter trying to sell his books and promote his martial arts system, FASST™/Dux Ryu. Most martial-arts enthusiasts view Dux’s claims of competing in secret tournaments as complete fiction. It is now widely accepted that Frank Dux lied his way into Hollywood, was never in any branch of the military, let alone the CIA, and that even his personal brand of martial arts as well as his alleged tournament victories and records are products of Frank’s imagination! Is ANY of this ridiculously awesome tale true? I don’t flipping know. But it sure made for one awesome, over-the-top, ball-punchingly spectacular Jean-Claude Van Damme film!
You only get killed at Kumite if you f*%@ up!
Supercult West is proud to present, Bloodsport!
