yeah so the fun thing i meant to share is that i was researching anglo-saxon charms for uh, inspiration for my william of lanchester wip, and i came across these four charms for finding stolen things (or cattle).

basically there are three incantations (well, more like two, one of which survives in two slightly different versions) and also this thing:

and all of these charms feature a cross in some capacity, the logic in the incantations being "may i find my stolen stuff like st. helena found the holy cross" (+ two of them also add "may the thief be exposed like judas' betrayal was exposed"), which reminded me a lot of the spell to see your enemy in jsamn.

(and on some level i do think that drawing a cross on some water to see a vision is an intuitive enough idea that susanna clarke could've just come up with it on her own, but even if that's the case, a nice parallel there)

#realized as i was fact-checking myself on this that they treat this spell differently in the show where it's basically just scrying #and the part where the 4 quarters mean earth+heaven+hell+faerie or england+ireland+scotland+wales is also not in the book #which is a bit of a shame bc 2 of these charms also invoke the 4 cardinal directions so it would be another parallel to how the spell works #but anyway i'm totally using this in my fic. and the show lore too bc it's sexy #john uskglass running off again and william lanchester using the charm to find him like a lost sheep! it's very cute i think #also if you're wondering what the letters in the Thing mean the answer is possibly nothing and probably we'll never know #at least from what i've read so far which is. 2 articles #if anyone has a source that says otherwise please share.......#mari rambles #jonathan strange and mr norrell #john uskglass

Thank you! Basically, when I was younger I had the delusion of “memorise every country in the world or else you’re a bad person,” followed by, “learn a brief history of every country in the world within 8 years or else you’re a bad person.” I learned in the order of history-mythology/religion-clothing, and I ended up loving the traditional clothing around and in Iran, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Mongolia, Bhutan, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, etc. It’s fairly difficult to find information about clothing in English, so I mostly pull from Hanfu for Cinder. Currently, I pretty much design how people would wear one today, ignoring old colour rules, pairing it with hair/accessories from separate dynasties, keeping bangs in hairstyles that otherwise would not have them, and sometimes adding in things that are more fantastical than historical. I would love to one day make futuristic designs, but I want to do that tastefully and respectfully, so, for now, I’m sticking closer to current-day interpretations.

#sorry for the word spam #Borders have changed so much that I don’t know the proper group names for things that are the same in several countries #or the same in certain time periods but different later on #so I felt it was safest to name a bunch off the top of my head #I can’t watch certain shows anymore #I could excuse The Gilded Age because I hate all of the outfits in it #I tried Lupin (2021) and don’t even get me started on what they did to that necklace #not only did it not look anything like the real (and immediately destroyed) necklace #but it also looked nothing like the one Napoleon gifted to Marie Louise!!!#there’s an aoqun design for her that I’ve had in my head for 2 years but I can’t pull it off correctly #and it was blue #it seems my default is the red qiyao ruqun #it’s so hard to find good info I’m sorry if I’m referring to anything wrong #Ireland is also surprisingly difficult to find clothing info #pretty easy to understand once you find it #but idk why it was that hard in the first place #apart from the majority of the fabric decomposing #ask

#mfw a movie has irish slang in it and i am familiar with it instead of usamerican stuff #i have Some Thoughts on the setting of inisherin + the time period given the givens abt the aran islands #but nothing concrete. might meditate on it #like ok im no scholar on the aran islands ive been there a couple times ive read a couple articles thats it #but like. the tourism leaning into their image of Old Irish Villagín With Sheeps And Stone Walls basically overruns its reputation #and the islands have leaned hard into the tourism and portraying themselves as True Irish Old Villages or whatever #and thus settles the situation where like. everything about the islands pander to the tourists #the islands themselves are not doing well as places to live iirc #aging population people moving away lack of amenities and funding and resources that arent Tourism #its a gaeltacht but the tourism business mandates knowing english etc etc etc lotsa shit #like i had a school friend from an island and she was always unreachable on breaks bcos the island didnt have wifi #SO! the islands around ireland suffer from lack of facilities while bending to tourism bcos they gotta #BACK 2 BANSHEES to be clear inisherin isnt an actual island but it was filmed on inish mór and very clearly based on the arans #i like the island setting bcos of the sense of isolation it gives i think it was a good choice for the movie #HOWEVER its like. you know the thing where all irish media needs to be set in the old times #when we were all wearing aran wool jumpers and playing our little instruments and being cute historical dotes #yeah. that. compounded with the aran islands wicked having to play into that in the present day #like banshees itself isnt that bad an offender. the island setting just makes it more obvious and you could tick lines off on a bingo sheet #(shoutout to the obligatory civil war reference)#where was i going with this. im tired of weird 'back when ireland was ireland' shit being Thee thing to make art abt #this is why young offenders is the best piece of irish cinema this decade. i need to rewatch the young offenders

so wait, since i was just reminded of the recorder thing donna talked about in the giggle, i now have a question for uk ppl: do yall learn the recorder in school? like in a music class? and like how much do yall have music class over there?

#this is a very interesting topic for me as a music educator from the us #ik a guy from ireland and he said there was no music class in schools for him and like not the same country BUT same island #(as northern ireland. not the others in the uk but still)#and its so wild and fascinating music education is a fascinating field and the way we do it in the us seems to be largely vvv unique to us #for clarification on how things are different so ppl have a better idea on how to answer my question lol:#in the us music class is standard in elementary schools and most places have general music until abt 5th/6th grade (year 6/7)#(general music = basics- music games learn recorder SOME notation-reading; often classroom instruments eg boomwhackers claves maracas #orff instruments if you're lucky/from a school district that isnt poor. also some world music)#its less standardized after that and not every school will have music after middle school but concert bands and choirs are both huge here #choirs start right on the heels of general music classes (sometimes start earlier + students elect to be in choir instead of general music)#bands USUALLY start in 4th grade (year 5) but sometimes can be later 5th/6th (year 6/7) or even 7th (year 8) (WAY less common)#depends on the state generally 4th is most common i think (choirs start at around the same time i think so probs 4th but choir isnt my area #orchestras are weird bc theyre a lot less common but can commonly start younger bc of one of the big approaches to music ed (suzuki method)#so like maybe 3rd grade (year 4) maybe 4th w/ band (year 5) but i have a friend who teaches at a private school #& said they have 1st/2nd graders (year 2/3)!! orchestra is also not my area though #also marching bands: vv common! usually just in hs (starting 9th grade / year 10) bc it supports the football team at games #but starting in 8th grade (year 9) is also common (sometimes even 7th / year 8)#theres two different styles: collegiate/show band and competition. former is very rah rah pop music etc; competition is more abstract #show bands are clearly designed to entertain whereas competition is designed to be more impressive and tell a story #so more impact moments abstract shapes/lines on the field and has movements - opener ballad closer (fast-slow-fast)

i must not get upset at my lack of an irish accent. getting upset at my lack of an irish accent is the mind killer. getting upset at my lack of an irish accent is the small despair that brings complete ego collapse.

#i have no fucking idea where it went #my theory IS: autism led to TV obsession during Formative Years and due to the fact there is a Lot of american tv i picked it up from that #so i neutralised my accent before it could form #which is a pain in the ass because my parents (my mother in particular) have pretty notable accents #and then theres me. neutralised vaguely-american sounding johnson #and now i have to live with the fact that multiple people throughout my life have genuinely thought i was american #despite the fact i have left ireland exactly 2 times #god ffffuuuucking damnit

Not me legitimately looking up flights to Ireland for a last minute near-mental-breakdown solotrip...

#i don't even know why i feel like i'm about to have a mental breakdown but yeah I feel like i'm gonna have one lol #so why not have it by literally running away for a couple days to ireland #i say as if i've ever taken a plane by myself and didn't only just got over most of my flying fears less than 2 years ago #and haven't only ridden a total of 7 flights in my entire life #and have a job providing me with disposable income #(though i do have plenty of savings but that's for paying the coop transfer fee for my late grandma's apartment)#(i haven't touched that amount in years because i needed it to stay. theoretically i could MAYBE spare a couple thousand)#(but i don't know the cost of the apt transfer and since i'm unemployed I don't know when i'd be able to recoup it)#(also i've applied to a billion jobs that could theoretically reach out to me at any time so that's another drawback)#i'm in a month-ish long break from therapy and it's not even been a week and i'm already on the verge of a meltdown this is great #well. kind of fitting. when i started with my most recent therapist i literally said in my first meeting #'i don't know what i'm doing with my life. i might run away to new zealand' and now when i meet my new one #it'll either be 'i'm 3 seconds away from booking a last minute trip to ireland' or 'got back from a last minute trip to ireland'#at least i'm consistent in my need to run away from my life without either therapy and/or a full time job to ground me
