Interesting about this picture is the artist himself. He was born a nobleman in Slovenia, but would go on to join the British Navy elevating himself to the rank of Rear-Admiral. He started his career as a midshipman aboard the roebuck-class 44-gun fifth rate H.M.S. Mediator, serving under Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood (1748–1810). Collingwood was noted for his duty during the Napoleonic Wars, famously, aboard H.M.S. Royal Sovereign, leading one of the two lines of attack during the Battle of Trafalgar, the other being led by Vice-Admiral Nelson aboard the H.M.S. Victory. It was Collingwood who inspired Raigersfeld to continue his naval career, and he would go on to serve aboard H.M.S. Victory, H.M.S. Speedy and H.M.S. San Josef, amongst others. His book ‘The Life of a Naval Officer’, privately printed c. 1830, but more widely distributed posthumously, gives an in-depth account of life in the British Navy throughout the Napoleonic Wars - he also looked to capture this life through his artwork.

On this day (2nd September) in 1685, Alice Lisle mounted the scaffold and was beheaded, the last woman in England to be judicially sentenced in this manner. Lisle was accused and convicted of harbouring fugitives after the defeat of the Monmouth Rebellion at the Battle of Sedgemoor. Upon the death of Charles II the previous February, his catholic brother ascended to the throne as James II. James II’s reign was opposed by many protestants, especially in the West of the Country. Raising an army, James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, the illegitimate son of Charles II, claimed the throne and attempted to depose James. After the failed rebellion, the participants were tried in Winchester during what is known to history as the ‘Bloody Assizes’ . The trials were presided over by Baron George Jeffreys, known to history as the ‘hanging judge’, for his frequent sentencing of execution. It is estimated that during the assizes, Jeffreys gave the sentence of execution for treason to 700 of those involved, or in Lisle’s case those who had sheltered the fugitives. It is also believed that her sentencing could have resulted from her husband, Sir John Lisle’s involvement as one of the judges in the trial and subsequent execution of James’s father Charles I, at the end of the English Civil War. Therefore her sentence in this case possibly was retroactive vengeance. Judge Jefferies - The Hanging Judge

History -

George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys, PC (15 May 1645 – 18 April 1689), also known as "the Hanging Judge",was a Welsh judge. He became notable during the reign of King James II, rising to the position of Lord Chancellor (and serving as Lord High Steward in certain instances).

His conduct as a judge was to enforce royal policy, resulting in an historical reputation for severity and bias.

Jeffreys' historical notoriety comes from his actions in 1685, after Monmouth's Rebellion.

Jeffreys was sent to the West Country in the autumn of 1685 to conduct the trials of captured rebels.

The centre of the trials was based at Taunton.

Estimates of the numbers executed for treason have been given as high as 700; however, a more likely figure is between 160 and 170 of 1381 defendants found guilty of treason

Kirigami, Anime & Remake

Here we are again the latest episode from the triplets of Nerdity, that’s right folks those wacky goofballs have done it again. First up we have Buck bringing us news about new robots using the art of Kirigami. The art of cutting paper, in this case it is cutting and folding paper. This method has been applied to robotics with some awesome results. Now while it is only early days, we ask you to remember the Origami claw we featured a while back. With this in mind you will understand why Buck is excited, and Professor joins in with the excitement. This is just the start of the show and it is already looking fantastic.

                Next we look at the dismal lack of taste exhibited by the foolish bunch of weirdos in Hollywood behind the Golden Globes. That’s right we said it, actually Buck did if any snipers are being sent for reprisals. But seriously, just get those idiots to go look at some of the amazing work in animation out there. It doesn’t have to be all CGI, honestly Hollywood was built on proper special effects. These days they struggle to do anything outside a computer lab. While we are not meaning to insult CGI and the wonders it can produce, why can’t we have some proper animation and anime getting awards. When can we see some real special effects like we used to get back in the day. Not meaning to sound as grumpy as Buck or as old as a Boomer but seriously the talent involved in special effects was astounding.

                Last we look at a remake of Sonic 06 that is actually looking good. That is until corporate lawyers realised they could make money by getting it shut down. Take a moment and open the link, doesn’t that look so much better then what was dumped on the market like so much garbage? The amount of work involved must be mind-blowing, but there may be hope for the future. Want to know what that might be, well you will need to listen in to find out. You thought I was slipping and going to tell you everything, but believe me, there is so much more for you.

VICENTE VYING TO WIN BACK-TO-BACK SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONALS AT AYR

Italian ace Frankie Dettori to shine at Newbury

Vicente, brought down at the first fence in the Aintree Grand National a fortnight ago, is The Leader’s selection for Saturday’s £215,000 Coral Scottish Grand National Scottish at Ayr.

“It was frustrating to see Vicente go at the first fence at Aintree – that’s the National,” rued Vicente’s trainer Paul Nicholls.

Eight-year-old VICENTE (3.55 AYR) who won the Scottish Grand National in 2016, recently bought by Trevor Hemmings, is vying to become the first horse since Androma in 1985 to win back-to-back Scottish Nationals.

“Vicente’s fine after the Aintree Grand National,” said Nicholls.

Vicente, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, looking to land the Scottish Grand National £120,000 first prize, will line-up with stablemates Arpege D’Alene and Vivaldi Collonges over the 3 miles 7 furlongs trip.

Warren Greatrex trained Missed Approach, second to Tiger Roll in the JT McNamara National Hunt Challenge Cup Chase at Cheltenham in March; Arpege D’Alene and Vintage Clouds, trained by Sue Smith, also owned by Hemmings, complete the Scottish Grand National Leader each-way tips.

Stuart Tales Part I 2nd September 1685, execution by beheading of Alice Lisle, the last woman in England to be judicially sentenced with beheading. Lisle was accused and convicted of harbouring fugitives after the defeat of the Monmouth Rebellion at the Battle of Sedgemoor. Upon the death of Charles II the previous February, his catholic brother ascended to the throne as James II. James II’s reign was opposed by many protestants, especially in the West of the Country. Raising an army, James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, the illegitimate son of Charles II, claimed the throne and attempted to depose James. After the failed rebellion, the participants were tried during the ‘Bloody Assizes’ in Winchester, presided over by Baron George Jeffreys, known to history as the ‘hanging judge’, for his frequent sentencing of execution. It is estimated that during the assizes, Jeffreys gave the sentence of execution for treason to 700 of those involved, or in Lisle’s case those who had sheltered the fugitives. It is also believed that her sentencing could have resulted from her husband, Sir John Lisle’s involvement as one of the judges in the trial and subsequent execution of James’s father Charles I, at the end of the English Civil War. The rule of James II however was short lived, three years after the Monmouth Rebellion, James was successfully deposed, during the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688. Jeffreys was captured trying to flee London, while disguised as a sailor. Ironically he was pointed out by one of his judicial victims, and captured. Terrified of the crowd, containing many who had received his judgement, Jeffrey’s pleaded to be protected from them, and the mercy he knew he wouldn't receive from them, as he himself had never shown towards them.
