a/n: this piece is the soft opening for my kinktober event! it's SFW but worry not! the actual filth will come very very soon. enjoy the read! the title is named after this song
𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬: bound by duty and pact, sebastian has served you and ciel for years. but as forbidden desires grow, the line between lady and servant blurs. on a still night, away from the world's noise, your butler confronts you and you discover that love is both perilous and powerful.
reblogs and interactions are always appreciated ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
You never celebrate your birthday.
Your soul was traded long ago for a hand in retribution so now you'd prefer not to mark the passing of your limited years.
Each year was like another tally of how long it had been since the great fire, a stinging reminder of how long you've survived without your parents.
So while the rest of polite society makes birthdays an extravaganza with galas and banquets, you welcome another year by sending your staff on temporary leave and Ciel with them.
"Go into town and enjoy yourselves."
This was non-negotiable but Ciel understood your reason better than anyone else. So off they went for their annual day of leisure—and bless the beating hearts of your servants for never questioning why you chose isolation as your way of celebrating. Distracting them with the best rooms at the local establishment was partially to blame.
When everything is said and done, the Phantomhive manor is always left sitting in a biting cold, allowing you to finally take in a fresh breath of solitude.
In the dead of night, the manor offered little light aside from the moon peaking through the windows, and with no maid or butler to tail you with a candelabra, your presence would only be known by the sound of your footsteps echoing in the halls.
Each year on your birthday, you were no different from a ghost, only that you had a heartbeat.
You found yourself stopping at the ballroom entrance and after giving an almighty push to the wooden doors, they slowly groaned open.
Refined as it was, any semblance of glamour in this room disappeared when the doors shut behind you. The ballroom looked much smaller without its usual lighting; the shadows cascading from each corner made it haunting—almost derelict. Despite there being no party, you were still dressed for the occasion.
Alone or not, you wouldn’t be caught dead looking poorly.
Your pace remained slow as you strode toward the center, entertaining yourself with painfully accurate scenarios if you were hosting one of your usual gatherings. Poor Finnian would probably be running around, setting forget-me-nots to their respective arrangements; Baldroy would be cooking in the kitchen, trying his best not to light his dishes ablaze; Mey-Rin would be somewhere tripping over her own feet, and as for Sebastian… Well, he’d be making sure it doesn’t get worse than that. As much as it pained you to praise Sebastian, he was always reliable even when faced with the toughest predicaments. Everything always seemed to run smoothly when he was around.
This made you snort.
Of course, Sebastian was reliable. His bustling duties are part of the contract and everyone would suffer if he were to breach it.
Between the clicking sound of your shoes against the smooth hardwood, you thought about how many years had passed since creating your pact. Five years ago, you and your brother had nothing to lose except the one thing that made you humans—your souls. And even that was given up for him to be eternally bound to you.
The pact was purely transactional.
Nothing more, nothing less.
At least, that’s what you’d been trying to convince yourself for the last year. You’ve been through enough adventures together to dull a weak heart. If he held back within the first few years to preserve your professional relationship, you could feel his restraint chipping away the longer you stayed together.
Was it wishful thinking or was a demon truly fancying you?
While the butler occupied your train of thought, you hadn’t realized you stopped walking. You gave yourself a moment to brush away the last of your thoughts and remained in the centre of the floor. The silver moonlight nodded at you through the glass roof and with open arms, you suddenly spun in a complete circle, basking in the empty ballroom in all its glory. At that moment you felt so easy, so yourself, so—
Thump.
You snapped your head toward the sound, your heart racing only a little. It came from the staircase, but it was far too dark to see who caused it or what. All that ease you had just felt left as quickly as it came.
“Who goes there?” You called into the void.
Another thump. Footsteps.
You sucked in your breath, kicking yourself for not carrying at least a dagger. Oh well, you mentally shrugged. In cases like this, at least you had somebody to summon.
With no answer, the figure began to emerge from the darkness as it reached the foot of the staircase and what was revealed made you want to scream a string of curses.
That bloody tailcoat!
You’d be able to recognise who that belonged to even if you wore an eyepatch like your damn brother. “Oh for God’s sake,” you mumbled under your breath.
“Forgive me if I startled you, my lady.”
“What the hell is going on? What are you doing here?! And who's with Ciel?"
"May I suggest for you to calm down—"
"As I recall, I sent everybody on leave. That includes you.”
With a gloved hand over his heart, Sebastian bowed earnestly, “Ciel is being taken care of. I understand your need for isolation but it’s not often good for your mental state, my lady. I thought I could provide you with some company even if you wish to remain stoic.”
“You’re going against an order.”
He approached you slowly as if his sudden presence wasn’t the only thing he had up his sleeves, “I know I am and I know you’re capable of punishment at a later time. I’ll be happy to accept it if that means you get to experience something other than loneliness and silence on your birthday.” With a hint of a smile on his lips, he glanced at the silk scarf you had neatly wrapped around your neck, “Should you feel uncomfortable, you have the power to stop me by force.”
“You’ve gotten quite bold lately, haven’t you?” You crossed your arms and sighed. “So what next? Do I need to walk you through my impressive list of things I do whenever I—”
“There’s no need,” Sebastian took his last step in front of you before the ballroom suddenly came to life. The moon still shone as your main source of light but as if a delicate veil had been lifted, soft, orchestral music rippled inside the hall. There was nobody else aside from the two of you but you felt as though an entire symphony was hiding in the shadows. Leave it to Sebastian to wield the pleasure of music as a weapon, especially when it was the one indulgence you could truly say you cherished.
“I’m guessing this is your doing?”
He extended his hand as a subtle invitation, bowing as he did.
“Guilty as charged, my lady.”
Slightly reluctant, you accepted his hand but not without question. “Are you trying to butter me up with a dance?”
“That depends on whether or not it’s working,” He answered as he pulled you into a gentle waltz. You both move with natural elegance, light on your feet while the music ebbs and flows, and the melody feels familiar to you like you’ve done this many times before. You’ve danced with a handful of Dukes and Barons but nobody has ever led you around a ballroom as gracefully as Sebastian. He whirled you in a full circle and then pulled you close to his chest. You huffed in response.
Sebastian resisted the urge to smirk, finding your flushed expression rather cute.
“I take it that you are displeased?”
“No,” You dropped your shoulders, “But dancing with my butler wasn’t in my playing cards for tonight.”
“Yet here we are, waltzing in the ballroom,” he twirled you again before settling his hand around your waist, “Consider this a birthday present, my lady.”
You stared at Sebastian with confusion. He was the strangest person you’ve ever known. Despite him being the embodiment of somebody’s nightmare, you felt safe around him, but even more so when your eyes met.
You hated it.
“And why gift me something this year? What’s so different from previous years?”
After all, he wasn’t always so stubborn.
He slid his hand to your lower back to gently dip you; as he reeled you back in, he held you closer than before, only stopping when your faces were inches apart. From here, he could smell a hint of your perfume and he could have sworn he felt your heartbeat. He hesitated for a moment as a tinge of guilt succumbs him, “Would you mind if I told you something… personal, my lady?”
You answered curtly with a nod.
“This year is different for two reasons. The first is that you’ve haunted my thoughts for quite some time now. And the second is that… you look especially beautiful tonight.”
Your feet had stopped shuffling at this point. You stood before him, ignoring that your heart had skipped a beat, “What are you trying to say?”
His eyes flickered over your face while his mind flicked over all the possible things to answer. Instead of responding to the question, he changed the subject slightly.
“My Lady, have you ever been in love before?”
“I can’t say I have,” you blinked at him. “And what do you know about love, demon?”
You couldn’t help but assume that his version of love was wicked and cruel. You’ve seen him exploit the human condition more times than you could count.
“I won’t pretend I’m an expert at love but in my long life, I could say I know things about it that you would hardly believe.” Sebastian smiled to himself, amused at the irony of being called a demon when these feelings were the most human they'd ever been. He traced small circles on your waist while shifting his other hand to the crook of your neck, never breaking his gaze as he freed the knot that kept your scarf in place. The scarf was discarded onto the floor but neither of you cared to look. “I’ve seen it in all forms and colours. Love is beautiful, despairing, and everything in between. Love can ruin everything you’ve ever built. It can be your biggest weakness or your greatest weapon. But more importantly, I know what someone looks like when they’re in love.”
A brief silence followed as he allowed himself to take your hand once more and he could feel your grasp tighten so faintly when his lips hovered over your skin, “Pact or not, you have me wrapped around your little finger. But something is killing me. Would you like to guess what it is?”
It was unbecoming of him but he kissed the back of your hand, leaving the pact mark on your exposed skin glowing — ultimately betraying every feeling you tried to suppress. You swallowed thickly before playing it off with a laugh.
“No. Enlighten me instead.”
“As you wish.”
Sebastian hummed as he began swaying you into a much slower version of a waltz, holding you so close you touched at the hip. He lifted your chin, forcing your eyes to meet his, but he was almost left entranced by how ethereal you looked with his mark on you. It wasn’t the first time seeing it but it was the first time he allowed himself to imagine the many other ways he could imprint you.
“Well, my lady, you have no idea how maddening it is to serve you, to watch over you, to constantly want to touch you, to hold you, while knowing that I cannot. It is pure agony. You could call that love, could you not?”
You were barely able to continue speaking, the feelings you had also been hiding were threatening to bubble at the surface, “Well, I suppose you could.” While you rocked from side to side, he thumbed the skin around your jaw as if to ease whatever thought was wracking your brain.
Suddenly stepping away from you, Sebastian said, “Pardon my rudeness, but this is a reminder that my senses are far sharper than a human’s—” he then twirled you in three spins, and when you faced him for the final time, he caught you by the waist, “—so is it safe to assume you carry the same burden as I?”
This brought your waltz to a slow stop but the music continued to quietly play as if the ballroom became a whimsical world unto itself. As you got back on your feet, you rested your hands on his chest while your head hung low. It always frustrated you a great deal that he could read your soul like a book. All you could do was chuckle—earning a brow raise from the butler—but when you finally decided to look up at him, what remained of that chuckle was a rare and defeated smile.
“You caught me,” you confessed.
In truth, he was surprised. He didn’t think your answer would come so easily, even letting out a quiet laugh of his own. Not counting your sadistic grins while you and your kin carried orders at the behest of the Queen, this was the first time he had seen you smile so genuinely in his presence—he couldn’t help but marvel at you. He found himself captivated by it but soon realised that despite your smile, you were just as flustered.
“I knew it,” Sebastian failed to prevent himself from squeezing your waist. No matter how many centuries had passed, humans always felt so fragile to him. You opened your mouth in a silent gasp but he leaned towards you, his voice a low whisper in your ear, “Now, I must tell you something else. However, you may deem it inappropriate.”
A shiver went down your spine and even though you were aware you were alone, you quickly glanced around the room nonetheless, “As if this wasn’t already beyond inappropriate but be my guest.”
Sebastian carefully considered his next words but there was no way for him to conceal his desire any longer—he called your name but his voice was dripped with something you couldn’t put your finger on. “You’ve become so intoxicating, like sweet poison I willingly drink.”
Your eyes widened in surprise. All the words you had prepared died on your tongue immediately. Sebastian always prided himself on being a butler worth his salt, so in the years that you’ve been together, not once has he let formalities slip. You took a moment to think about the events that led you here and embarrassingly, the warmth you were already suffering with, deepened. He wasn’t addressing you as the Lady of the House nor as a butler. He was speaking to you as Sebastian Michaelis, a love-struck fiend.
His fingers brushed against your forehead gently, moving the hairs away from your eyes, studying you intently with a faint hint of wonder in his stare. He had always done his best to hide his attachment but you felt his arm around your waist growing more possessive,
“And seeing you smile—the sight of you is just mesmerising. It unravels me.”
You could feel the confusion and irritation and your mind melted down by his show of affection. “I wish the world would give me more to smile about,” you muttered in a heartbeat.
As if your body had a mind of its own, you caressed his cheek and it was cold in comparison to your skin.
“How damned am I to only smile in the presence of the wicked?” You continued.
He closed his eyes and leaned into your hand—a low, contented hum slipped past his lips. If he could drift into a dreamless dream like this, he would.
“Ah, but are you damned or destined?”
Under the cloak of night, you moved your hand against his lips, making his eyes flutter open in surprise.
What do you think, Sebastian?
Now, it was his turn to smile. Sebastian began placing trails of hot, forbidden kisses down your fingers; you tasted soft and warm, drawing him in like a secret only the two of you shared.
When he saw how all of the sharp edges and hard masks you used to hide behind were gone, he desired nothing more than to take you, hand in hand, towards a place with no promise of light. Despite it defying all conventions, Sebastian whispered with sincerity you had never heard from him before,
“A soul such as yours is so very tempting. Be it that you are doomed, I will enjoy burning with you to the fullest.”

1. Belgium approves four-day week and gives employees the right to ignore their bosses after work
Workers in Belgium will soon be able to choose a four-day week under a series of labour market reforms announced on Tuesday.
The reform package agreed by the country's multi-party coalition government will also give workers the right to turn off work devices and ignore work-related messages after hours without fear of reprisal.
"We have experienced two difficult years. With this agreement, we set a beacon for an economy that is more innovative, sustainable and digital. The aim is to be able to make people and businesses stronger," Belgian prime minister Alexander de Croo told a press conference announcing the reform package.
2. Spain makes it a crime for pro-lifers to harass people outside abortion clinics
Spain has criminalized the harassment or intimidation of women going for an abortion under new legislation approved on Wednesday by the Senate. The move, which involved changes to the penal code, means anti-abortion activists who try to convince women not to terminate their pregnancies could face up to a year behind bars.
3. House passes bill to federally decriminalize marijuana
The House has voted with a slim bipartisan majority to federally decriminalize marijuana. The vote was 220 to 204.
The bill, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, will prevent federal agencies from denying federal workers security clearances for cannabis use, and will allow the Veterans’ Administration to recommend medical marijuana to veterans living with posttraumatic stress disorder.
The bill also expunges the record of people convicted of non-violent cannabis offenses, which House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said, “can haunt people of color and impact the trajectory of their lives and career indefinitely.”
4. France makes birth control free for all women under 25
The scheme, which could benefit three million women, covers the pill, IUDs, contraceptive patches and other methods composed of steroid hormones.
Contraception for minors was already free in France. Several European countries, including Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway, make contraception free for teens.
5. The 1st fully hydrogen-powered passenger train service is now running in Germany. The only emissions are steam & condensed water.
Five of the trains started running in August. Another nine will be added in the coming months to replace 15 diesel trains on the regional route. Alstom says the Coradia iLint has a range of 1,000 kilometers, meaning that it can run all day on the line using a single tank of hydrogen. A hydrogen filling station has been set up on the route between Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervörde and Buxtehude.
6. Princeton will cover all tuition costs for most families making under $100,000 a year, after getting rid of student loans
In September, the New Jersey Ivy League school announced it would be expanding its financial aid program to offer free tuition, including room and board, for most families whose annual income is under $100,000 a year. Previously, the same benefit was offered to families making under $65,000 a year. This new income limit will take effect for all undergraduates starting in the fall of 2023.
Princeton was also the first school in the US to eliminate student loans from its financial aid packages.

𓉸ྀི HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 𓉸ྀི
Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, has a rich history rooted in ancient traditions and diverse cultural practices. While today’s Halloween is known for costumes, trick-or-treating, and eerie decorations, its origins reveal a complex tapestry of customs from various cultures.
Origins in Samhain
The origins of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, observed by the Celts in Ireland and other parts of Europe over 2,000 years ago. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a time when the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to be particularly thin. On the night of October 31st, the Celts believed that the souls of the deceased returned to the earth. To honor these spirits and protect themselves, they lit bonfires and wore costumes, often made from animal skins.
The festival held significant agricultural importance and was imbued with spiritual beliefs. The Celts thought the presence of the dead could bring either fortune or mischief, prompting rituals to appease these spirits. It was common to leave food and drink outside homes to satisfy wandering souls.
Transition to Halloween
By the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints' Day, intended to honor all saints and martyrs. The evening before became known as All Hallows' Eve, which eventually transformed into Halloween. The Catholic Church's efforts to Christianize pagan practices led to a blend of religious observance and folk traditions, paving the way for the Halloween we recognize today.
In the 19th century, Halloween began to gain traction in the United States, especially among Irish immigrants fleeing the Great Famine. These immigrants brought their Samhain customs to America, which evolved into practices like guising—children dressing in costumes and going door-to-door for treats. This practice laid the foundation for modern trick-or-treating, which became widely popular by the early 20th century.
Halloween Today
Modern Halloween features a variety of customs, including costume parties, haunted houses, and trick-or-treating. The holiday has transformed into a significant commercial event in the United States, with billions of dollars spent annually on costumes, decorations, and candy. This commercialization has shifted some aspects of the holiday away from its spiritual origins, emphasizing entertainment and community engagement.
Cross-Cultural Parallels
While Halloween has distinct origins, many cultures worldwide celebrate similar festivals that honor the dead and explore themes of the supernatural. These celebrations reflect local customs, beliefs, and historical contexts.
Dia de los Muertos (Mexico)
Celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a vibrant holiday honoring deceased loved ones. Families create ofrendas (altars) adorned with photographs, food, marigolds, and candles to welcome back the spirits. This celebration blends indigenous beliefs with Catholic traditions, emphasizing joyful remembrance rather than fear of death. Festivities include parades, traditional dances, and the creation of intricate sugar skulls, symbolizing the connection between the living and the dead.
Obon (Japan)
Obon, celebrated in mid-August, is a Buddhist festival honoring the spirits of ancestors. Families light lanterns to guide the spirits home and engage in traditional dances called Bon Odori. Offerings of food are made at gravesites and altars, reflecting the belief that ancestors return during this time. Obon emphasizes gratitude and respect for ancestors, mirroring Halloween's focus on honoring the deceased but with a stronger communal aspect.
Chuseok (South Korea)
Known as the Korean harvest festival, Chuseok occurs in late September or early October, providing families with an opportunity to gather and pay respects to ancestors through Charye (ritual ceremonies). Traditional foods like songpyeon (rice cakes) are prepared, symbolizing gratitude for the harvest. This celebration emphasizes family ties and respect for heritage, akin to the familial aspects of Halloween.
Hungry Ghost Festival (China)
Celebrated during the seventh month of the lunar calendar, the Hungry Ghost Festival honors spirits believed to return to the living world. Families prepare offerings of food, incense, and paper money to appease these wandering souls. Performances, such as Chinese opera, are often held to entertain the spirits. This festival underscores the importance of honoring ancestors and reflects cultural beliefs about the interconnectedness of the living and the dead.
Pchum Ben (Cambodia)
This 15-day festival, occurring in September and October, honors deceased relatives through offerings and prayers at pagodas. Cambodians believe that during this time, the gates of hell open, allowing spirits to receive offerings from the living. Families gather to share meals and remember their ancestors, emphasizing communal ties and respect for the deceased, similar to the communal aspects seen in Halloween celebrations.
The history of Halloween is a complex interplay of ancient traditions, religious practices, and cultural adaptations. While it has evolved into a festive occasion marked by fun and frivolity, its roots reflect humanity’s enduring relationship with death and the afterlife. The global parallels found in other cultures emphasize a universal desire to honor those who have passed, highlighting both shared values and unique interpretations of life and death. As Halloween continues to evolve, it serves as a vivid example of how cultural practices can transform and adapt, preserving essential human connections across time and geography. Understanding these connections deepens our appreciation for Halloween, revealing it as part of a broader human narrative that spans cultures and centuries.

For the last couple weeks in town, residents will have noticed that the town has slowly been putting up their fall decorations, with pumpkins taking their places at front door steps, paper ghosts in the windows, and even a few scarecrows around the square!
There will be plenty of family-friendly fun, but perhaps the most anticipated part of the festival will be the Halloween costume party held at Sharky's, our Monster Mash! Once again there will be a costume contest with plenty of prizes! More info will come later in the month.

Read about what you’ll learn on the haunted tour HERE
Neighborhoods:
Trick-or-treating will obviously take place on Halloween night, so make sure you have plenty of candy for all the little gremlins of our little beach town!
Halloween decorations on the lawns and houses of anyone wanting to participate (feel free to make posts of what those decorations look like and tag our aesthetics blog!)
Part Two:
Sharky's Monster Mash:
Sharky's will once again be holding their annual Halloween party, The Monster Mash! This will be part 2 of the event, so we'll let you know when it's time to post costumes and threads for this one!
Please feel free to make posts of your character's Halloween costumes and tag our aesthetic blog as well as tag it as #ab.halloween , as well as put your character's name and the name of who they're dressed as in the description! And if you're doing a couple's costume, make sure you tag your partner in there as well! This helps us admins keep up with everything!
Like last year, we'll reblog all the costumes to our aesthetics page and we'll make a masterlist of them all where muns can vote for their fave costumes!
Categories will be: best costume, best couples costume, funniest costume, sexiest costume, most creative costume!
A second post will be made for this part of the event, giving all the dates and more info on the party!
RULES: (this will be expanded on during part 2!)

Therapy Exercise #3 Fog Mood Boards
Autumn greetings, students! It's that time again, where the air gets crisper and our surroundings become a little more bewildering. Fall is upon us and soon so will be the fog! It would serve students well to prepare for the upcoming unprecedented weeks of October. Thank you, Deans Beau, Lee, and Tate
Your therapy exercise this month will assist in getting ready for our spooky annual tradition of "The Fog" that starts on October 1st
Sit with each of your characters and think of something fun that the Fog will do to them. Perhaps transform them into some fun supernatural being, give them some kind of power or infliction. Are they haunted by specters of their past? Or a werewolf? A ghost? When you have an idea, send a request to the main to both claim your idea in the case of repeats, and get it approved.
Once approved, you will make mood boards to represent each of your characters' Fog Inflictions. Set the tone, paint us a picture, get spooky with it.
The due date for mood board submissions is to be September 30th! Just before the event begins.
If you have questions feel free to send and ask to the main or DM a mod, and we will assist as best as we can!
Happy Haunting, Ghost, Ghouls, and Supernatural Entities!

Mary Anne Talbot - a female Soldier and Sailor
Mary Anne Talbot is one of the women who have the adventure of serving at sea disguised as a male sailor. She was born in London on 2 February 1778, the illegitimate daughter of William Talbot, 1st Earl Talbot. Her mother died at birth, her presumed father when she was four years old. She was brought up by a wet nurse at Worthen in Shropshire until she was five, after which she attended a private boarding school in Chester, run by a Mrs Tapperly, until she was 14. The only relative she knew was an elder sister, an Hon. Miss Dyer, who also died quite young in the birth of her child in 1791. She enlightened Mary Anne about her presumed parentage before her death and left her a handsome fortune of £30,000 sterling. From this fortune Mary Anne could have had an annual income of 1500 pounds, but her sister's chosen guardian, a Mr. Sucker, did not provide for her further education, but gave her to Essex Bowen, a captain in the 82nd Regiment of Foot.
Mary Anne Talbot, by G. Scott, after James Green, published 1804 (x)
The latter took her to London, where he made her his not-so-voluntary mistress in 1792. But already in the autumn of 1792 he was to go to Flanders and simply took her with him. To this end, he passed her off as an errand boy, who took her to St. Domingo as John Taylor. From there she went to Flanders, where she was now listed as Drummer Boy. As such she took part in the capture of Valenciennes on 28 July 1793, where Captain Essex was killed. She now deserted the regiment and made her way through Luxembourg to the Rhine, until in September 1793, out of necessity, she signed on as a cabin boy to the captain of a French lugger called Le Sage. The lugger, according to her account, had been captured by Lord Howe in the Queen Charlotte, and "Taylor" (as she still called herself) was assigned to HMS Brunswick 74 guns under Captain John Harvey (1740-1794) as a powder monkey, in which capacity she took part in the great victory of 1 June 1794, but was severely wounded by a grape shot that shattered her left ankle.
Captain Essex with his footboy John Talbot (x)
She spent four months at Haslar Royal Naval Hospital in Gosport. She then became a midshipman on the Bomb Vessel Vesuvius. However, this was captured off Normandy by two French privateers. As a prisoner, Taylor remained in Dunkirk for 18th months. After her release, she signed on with the American ship Ariel under Captain John Field, sailing to New York in August 1796. In November she returned to London on the Ariel. There she was picked up by a press gang in Wapping. In order not to have to re-enter the Royal Navy, she revealed her true gender, whereupon she was discharged. She then haunted the Navy's pay office for some time, and various donations were collected for her. But she was intemperate and spent her money frivolously. The Duke and Duchess of York and the Duchess of Devonshire, it is said, interceded for her.
Mary Anne Talbot resisting a Press Gang, by John Chapman (x)
After a series of employments including a gig as a jeweller's assistant or a performance in a small theatre in Tottenham Court Road in the Babes in the Wood, and a stay in Newgate from which she was rescued by the Society for the Relief of Persons confined for small Debts, her misfortunes forced her to take refuge as a domestic servant in the house of the publisher Robert S. Kirby in St. Paul's Churchyard, who recorded her adventures in the second volume of his Wonderful Museum, 1804 and continued her story in The Life and Surprising Adventures of Mary Anne Talbot, 1809. After three years' service, a general deterioration, caused in part by the wounds and privations she had suffered, rendered her unable to work regularly, and she was removed to the house of an acquaintance in Shropshire at the end of 1807. There she remained for some weeks, and died on 4 February 1808, aged 30.
Mary Anne Talbot, by G. Scott, after James Green, published 1804 (x)
Perhaps some of you have noticed that there are certain similarities to Hannah Snell. And in fact, her story is very much in doubt. Because there are great inconsistencies with the times and the ships that she had given in her biography. Because there is no Talbot on the ships listed and there was no Talbot on the Vesuvius at the time it was captured, and the capture itself is also questionable because the ship was not off Normandy at that time but in the West Indies. Whether she just mixed things up here or whether they were chosen to spice up her story is questionable, and it cannot be ruled out that this story was a product of fantasy.

The 10 Most Anticipated TTRPGs For 2024!
EN World's annual vote on the most anticipated titles of the coming year, and yes, some games have appeared on this list in previous years.
10 Tales of the Valiant (Kobold Press)
1st appearance Kobold Press joins the 'alternate 5E' club with this rewritten, non-OGL version of the game! A million dollar Kickstarter last year, and a new one for the GM's book going on right now, Kobold Press announced this as 'Project Black Flag' during the OGL crisis of 2023, but being unable to trademark that name opted for Tales of the Valiant instead. The system, however, is still called the Black Flag Roleplaying System.
9. Mothership 1E (Tuesday Night Games)
3rd appearance On this list three years running, the boxed Mothership 1E game should be coming out this year! This is sci-fi horror at its best -- you can play scientists, teamsters, androids, and marines using the d100 'Panic Engine'. Yep, it's Alien(s), pretty much.
8. Monty Python's Cocurricular Mediaeval Reenactment Program (Exalted Funeral)
2nd Appearance Exalted Funeral made quite a splash when they announced this game last year, which went on to make neary $2M on Kickstarter. And how could they not? It's Monty Python fergoodnessake! A rules-lite gaming system, spam, a minigame with catapults, spam, coconut dice rollers, spam, and an irrepressible Python-eque sense of humour. Did I mention the spam? It was at #10 on this list last year, but it's claimed to #8 this year.
7. Daggerheart (Darrington Press)
1st appearance From the Critical Role folks, Daggerheart is a new fantasy TTRPG with its own original system coming out this year with "A fresh take on fantasy RPGs, designed for long-term campaign play and rich character progression."
6. Cohors Cthulhu (Modiphius)
1st appearance It's Ancient Rome. It's Cthulhu. It uses Modiphius' in-house 2d20 System. You can be a gladiator, a centurion, or a Germanic hero. Did I mention Cthulhu?
5. Dolmenwood (Necrotic Gnome)
1st appearance The British Isles, a ton of folklore, and a giant Kickstarter--Dolmenwood is a dark, whimsical fantasy TTRPG drawing from fairy tales and lets you "journey through tangled woods and mossy bowers, forage for magical mushrooms and herbs, discover rune-carved standing stones and hidden fairy roads, venture into fungal grottoes and forsaken ruins, battle oozing monstrosities, haggle with goblin merchants, and drink tea with fairies."
4. Pendragon 6E (Chaosium)
4th appearance Last year's winner was on this list waaaaay back in 425 AD, and it's still here! Well, maybe not that far back, but it's shown up in 2021 at #4, 2022 at #3, 2023 at #1, and now 2024 at #4! What can we say? People are clearly anticipating it... still.
3. 13th Age 2nd Edition (Pelgrane Press)
2nd appearance 13th Age is over a decade old now, and was our most anticipated game way back in 2013. Now the new edition is coming! It's compatible with the original, but revised and with a ton more... stuff! 13th Age 2E was #3 in last year's list!
2. The Electric State Roleplaying Game (Free League)
1st appearance Free League is always on these lists, and for good reason. This gorgeous looking game is described as "A road trip on the verge of reality in visual artist and author Simon Stålenhag's vision of an apocalyptic alternate 1990s".
1. Shadow of the Weird Wizard (Schwalb Entertainment)
3rd appearance First announced by Rob Schwalb a couple of years ago, this is a more family-friendly version of his acclaimed RPG, Shadow of the Demon Lord. SHADOW OF THE WEIRD WIZARD is a fantasy roleplaying game in which you and your friends assume the roles of characters who explore the borderlands and make them safe for the refugees escaping the doom that has befallen the old country. Unsafe are these lands: the Weird Wizard released monsters to roam the countryside, cruel faeries haunt the shadows, undead drag themselves free from their tombs, and old, ancient evils stir once more. If the displaced people would rebuild their lives, they need heroes to protect them. Finally at the top of the list after being #7 in 2022, and #6 in 2023!

This challenge is open to Fluff, Slice of Life, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, and Smut for all Ikemen Games, including Ikemen Prince, Ikemen Sengoku, Ikemen Vampire, Ikemen Villains, Ikemen Revolution, and Ikemen Genjiden!

Please label your fic with the suitor(s) you are using and which ikemen game they come from!
Please also label which genre your fic falls under (ie., Fluff, angst, hurt/comfort/slice of life, smut) and any appropriate content warnings
You can use as many or as few lyrics as you want from a song to use as inspiration! You can also combine songs if you're feeling fancy. Just make sure to list the titles of the song(s), as well as the lyric(s) you're using in your fic in the description.
Example:
Prompt - No. 11: "Love Like Ghosts" Lyric - "Yes I know that love is like ghosts, only few have seen it but everybody talks"
Please use the tag #Cozytober Follower Celebration on your fics so that I can find and reblog them! Please also tag my blog @randonauticrap to make it even easier for me to locate them and add them to the Masterlist! If I haven't reblogged your fic by the end date of the challenge, on October 31st 2023, it probably means I have missed it, so please DM me with a link to your fic and I will reblog. Vievecor City's annual HALLOWEEN PARTY is finally upon us!
The demons of Vievecor City have decided that the entire day and then some has been dedicated for this year’s party. Guests are invited to enter the Vicium starting from 10pm on Oct 30th and are welcome to stay until the morning of November 1st.
Once guests enter the Vicium entrance, they will be transported to a different world called Nightspire Vale. The vale encompasses the grounds surrounding Nightspire Castle, the castle on the hill that looks like something straight out of a fairy tale world.
EFFECTIVE SPELL: Guests will also be overcome with the Nightspire Spell once they enter the Vale... The costumes they are wearing will now cause its wearer take on traits and drive of the character they are portraying! The knowledge that they have to achieve their character's goal at this party is now ringing in everyone's heads... This Nightspire Spell will be in effect as long as guests remain in Nightspire Vale. (OOC: ALL CHARACTERS WHO ARE ATTENDING THIS EVENT NOW HAVE ONE GOAL AND THAT IS TO COMPLETE THEIR CHARACTER'S GOAL AND PLAY OUT THEIR FAIRY TALE! Players can choose how affected by this spell their characters will be when it comes to personalities, but every character must be affected by the innate desire that their chosen characters are driven by in their fairy tales. [e.g. The Scarecrow really wants to possess a brain; or Ariel wants human legs to experience the human world and find her Prince; or Captain Hook wants to get rid of Peter Pan and find treasure.] Characters who are from the same story will be more drawn to each other to act out their fairy tale stories. [e.g. Prince Eric and Ariel; or Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.] Princes and Princesses will be more drawn to each other (depending on their sexuality) if they do not have same story counterparts. Villainous characters will be more motivated to do bad things to good characters in accordance to their fairy tale stories. [e.g. Pirates will want to steal treasure, witches will want to curse princes or princesses.] Characters who have non-human forms will not be able to revert to their human forms unless they can find a creative way to do so! [e.g. Ariel will be in mermaid form unless she can find a witch/fairy to grant her legs; or The Frog Prince will remain a frog unless he can find someone willing to kiss him.] If two of the same characters exists, they will become rivals to see who can reach their goal first. Characters will retain their original species even with this spell in effect and will have access to their physical strength and/or magic but will be unable to reverse this spell. If you have any questions, just ask the admin!)
Party guests will find themselves at the start of a YELLOW BRICK ROAD the moment they are transported to Nightspire Vale. They will have the freedom to explore the surroundings for the duration of the party. This road leads anyone who does not stray from it to Nightspire Castle.
(OOC: Characters can interact with each other all along the Yellow Brick Road before heading to Nightspire Castle as the final destination.)
THE MARKETPLACE is situated along the Yellow Brick Road. Guests are greeted by stalls selling all kinds of wares ranging from fresh produce, alcohol and even trinkets and souvenirs of Nightspire Vale. The stall owners are all demons or their affiliates who have volunteered to man these stalls. These NPCs are not affected by the spell that is enveloping Nightspire Vale because they are each wearing charms that protect them from it.
PARTY EVENT: At a stall called 'Bag O' Tricks', guests will be able to purchase spell bags that contain specific spells to use on fellow party guests for fun! They can do so by throwing these bags at others and the magic within each bag will explode onto it's target on impact. The spells are as follows:
👻 Haunted: Muse is now experiencing their worst fears and insecurities as if they were ghosts, haunting them at every step. To make things worse, no one else can see them… This spell will last for up to 3 hours. 🖤 Love’s Keen Sting: Muse becomes obsessively jealous of a person of the anon’s choosing, believing them to be a romantic rival. This spell will last for up to 2 hours. 🍺 Deliriously Drunk: Muse becomes excessively drunk for a specified amount of time, acting oddly and hallucinating occasionally. Muse may react to drunkenness however they please. This spell will last for up to 4 hours. 🐸 Spirit Animal: Muse has turned into an anon-specified animal. If unspecified, mun can choose. Characters will not lose the drive of their fairy tale characters even after being turned into animals. Animals can only communicate with other animals. Characters who are already animals for this event cannot be affected by this spell. This spell will last for 4hrs. 💬 = No More Lies: This punch makes the drinker tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. This spell will last for up to 6hrs. (OOC: Players can either choose the type of spell bag they want to purchase or are welcome to send the different emojis to other willing players. Players are allowed to have more than one effect in play at any time. All magic effect timelines are for player reference only and will only affect the character in-game.)
A MAGIC GARDEN is situated just off the Yellow Brick Road closer to Nightspire Castle. In this garden sits a glowing pond where guests will be able to make wishes to help them along on their fairy tale journeys. Each guest is limited to 2 wishes each and they have to kneel down next to the pond and place their hand in the water to make their wish. The wishes are not guaranteed to be granted, so use them wisely...
(OOC: This location is for players to help characters further along in their fairy tale journey. Characters can wish for anything as long as it is to help them on their quest to complete their fairy tale. Wishes can range from an NPC Prince Charming, to a spell to defeat their enemy. Players who wish to use their wishes should go to the OOC Discord dice rolling channel, state their character's wish and roll 2 d6s. The wish is successfully granted if they manage to roll 2 of the same number. Players are welcome to get as creative as they want with their character's wishes within reason! Characters cannot wish for the Nightspire Spell to be broken or ineffective. Characters can choose to give their wishes to other characters.)
At the end of the yellow brick road is NIGHTSPIRE CASTLE, the final destination for all of our fairy tale guests. All party guests will be instinctively drawn to this castle towards the end of the party because they know that there is a Grand Ball that is taking place within!
(OOC: For event purposes, all characters must enter this castle by the end of the party no matter what and will have to play out their respective endings before the event is over. See below.)
For guests who managed to complete their fairy tale character's story, the castle that welcomes them will be decorated in whites, creams and gold as if to celebrate the HAPPY ENDINGS that take place! The promised Grand Ball will take place in this version of the castle for guests to enjoy.
(OOC: If your character manages to successfully complete their character's fairy tale story, they will be able to use this castle to play out their happy endings! The castle will manifest whatever your character needs from rooms to objects to NPCs to finish their tale. All characters who were able to complete their fairy tale stories will be able to interact with each other at the Grand Ball until the party is over.)
Should guests not complete their fairy tale story or fail in their quest to complete as the party comes to an end, the castle they enter will be drenched in blacks and purples and a heavy and sombre atmosphere will be felt in the air around them. This version of the castle will make guests play out the BAD ENDINGS of their characters.
(OOC: If your character does NOT manage to successfully complete their character's fairy tale story, they will be trapped in the castle to play out their bad ending before the party ends. Players can get creative and come up with their own versions of bad endings for their characters should they wish to do so! Characters who have to play out bad endings will not be able to interact with each other or anyone else until the party is over.)
RULES:
Our Halloween Party Event will run from Oct 27th, 12pm EST to Nov 3rd, 12pm EST. In-game, everything will happen from the night of Oct 30th to the morning of Nov 1st. Players can choose how easy or difficult their character's quest is going to be by using the information in this post as well as interacting with other players and their characters. Should players not wish for their quest to get too complicated, they can make use of the Magic Garden, but wishes are granted depending on luck of the dice. Players are free to choose whether to participate or not, but it is highly encouraged for everyone to do so. Characters who do not know of the supernatural world will have to sit this event out but they will not be penalised for low activity. Once the event has begun, we ask players to only post starters which are related to it. Please tag all new starters with #vchalloween2024 and #vievecorcitystarter and @vievecorcitystarters. The open starter rules still apply! We advise players to place prior threads on hold during our event week, however, this is not required. Thank you for reading and HAVE FUN!

You will not have to pause any current or future threads! But we do ask that any new threads about Fright Fest isn't posted after November 1st!
The activities listed upon were just some of the ideas! The sky is the limit here, honesty. Anything that could fit within celebrating Halloween and fall could very likely be taken place here. So, if anything else comes to mind that makes sense, go for it!
If your muses got kids, they would absolutely enjoy this. If your muses like Halloween and spooky stuff, they will absolutely enjoy this. If you looking to be scared or just have some fun with the little ones, go for it!
Have fun!

Fansubs released for Mysteriet på Greveholm!
The Olsson family has decided to rent a big house on the countryside for Christmas. But after going to the wrong address and meeting up with some robbers, they instead get the keys to the abandoned castle called Greveholm. Once the family has moved in, the children discover that two ghosts have haunted the castle for centuries...
Merry Christmas in advance! This year I’ve decided to translate a julkalender; a type of TV series created annually in Scandinavian countries, with one episode released every day from the 1st to 24th of December. Since its release in 1996, Greveholm has been consistently held in high regard, even getting ranked as the second best Swedish julkalender of all time in a 2016 poll. Personally I had a lot of fun translating the dialogue here.
Greveholm is currently available for free on the service SVT Play; I have written instructions on how to access it and the subs here! You can also download the subtitles from Opensubtitles(.com/.org) and use them for your own DVD rips as well - though there might be a slight desync if you do so.
Also, special thanks to @fiskprinsen for sending me their subs of the first 16 episodes! A lot of the time I ended up doing my own thing and just glancing at the other subs, but it was still a huge help for this project.
#mysteriet på greveholm#fansub#english#I should probably mention that the series got several licensed games based on it...#and for some reason the first game was translated to several languages including English despite the series never getting exported#This translation still called the castle Greveholm so I didn't change the name of it here

EVENT 008 {OCT 1ST- NOV 5TH} HALLOWEEN IN AURORA BAY
Spooky Season is officially upon us, and after the eventful year Aurora Bay has had so far, the town officials wanted to start the holiday season off with a bang! And so, what better way to do that than to extend festivities for an entire month!
Starting Sunday October 1st and lasting the entire month, Aurora Bay will be completely transformed into a Halloweentown fit for the movies, with all stores and buildings in town pitching in! But decking out the town in pumpkins and cobwebs is just the beginning.
Every weekend this month Sunset Drive-In will be hosting movie nights with back-to-back Halloween movies (earlier showings are family-friendly while nighttime is for the scares!)
And if movies aren't your thing, no worries! Because the fun isn't stopping there. For the entire month, the town will be hosting plenty of fun autumnal activities to get into the spirit, including a pumpkin patch, haunted house, a mile-long corn maze, mulled wine and cider stalls, and a haunted hayride! Not to mention a not-so-haunted hayride in the day for the kiddos, spooky facepaintings, and candy pop-up spots all throughout town for some early trick or treating.
Everything in town though will be culminating to Halloween weekend!
During the daytime, along of course with trick or treating in the evening all throughout town, we're inviting all parents to trunk or treat in the Elementary School parking lot and to deck out their cars!
And then during the night, Aurora Bay residents are invited to Sharky's for their annual Halloween bash! Doors open at 9 with the party going on all night. Prizes will be given out all night and of course-- costumes required!
OOC INFO BELOW:
Here's our next event! and this time we decided to do things a little differently! Firstly, this event will be going on for the entire month! We will still be allowing non-event threads throughout. Secondly, it will be done in two parts.
Part One will be all the activities going on daily in town throughout the month- giving everyone ample opportunity to plot and play! The pumpkin patch, corn maze, haunted house, and hayride will all be running daily, while the movie nights will be weekends only.
Part Two will be the costume party. Part two threads can begin starting on October 27th and going until the event time ends on November 5th.
as this will be going on all month, all threads can of course continue! we are asking though for any starters pertaining to the event to please be tagged with aurorabay.halloween
if anyone would like to host a stall or have their establishments host any specials either at the grounds or in their own places (i.e. restaurants, stores), feel free!
