Happy New Year to all! If you’re like most Americans, you made a New Year’s resolution or two at the stroke of midnight on Sunday. While many well-intentioned resolutions get cast by the wayside before the end of the month, we’re happy to report that shopping at the farmers market can help you stick to your plan for a fresh start. And, with the Ossining Farmers Market staying open every Saturday throughout the winter months, we hope to make it easier for you to kickstart many common resolutions this coming weekend!
Resolution #1: A Better Diet Unlike the Standard American Diet (which possesses the unfortunate acronym of SAD), many culturally traditional, plant-forward diets, including the widely ballyhooed Mediterranean Diet, have been shown to promote longevity, weight-loss and disease prevention. The Mediterranean Diet can best be described as a style of eating inspired by the food habits and culinary customs of people who live in or near the Mediterranean Basin. Centered around local food, traditional cooking and ingredients that are plentiful in the Mediterranean region, the diet emphasizes fruits and vegetables, olive oil, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and moderate amounts of lean meat, poultry and seafood.
If you’re looking to embrace the Mediterranean Diet in 2024, we suggest making a beeline to the farmers market this weekend! Our farmstalls will be replete with a variety of fresh, seasonal produce including apples, pears, carrots, potatoes, beets, squash, turnips, onions, cabbages and much more. Drop by your favorite bread and baked goods vendors for whole grain loaves and other nutritious carbs. And don’t forget to pick up locally and sustainably sourced, humanely raised meat, fish, poultry and eggs to give your plate an extra protein boost.
Resolution #2: Moving More Getting fitter through more movement is another highly popular and worthwhile New Year’s resolution. If you’re already heading to the farmers market on a weekly basis, why not make the trip part of your regular exercise regimen? Bundle up in your winter gear for a brisk, heartrate-spiking walk there and back or grab your bicycle to pedal the distance if it’s too far of a walk. Not only will this get you moving, but spending time outside in the fresh air during the winter months has been shown to reduce stress, promote healing and increase a sense of well-being. The theory is that exposure to the outdoors increases your levels of Vitamin D, sometimes known as the “sunshine” vitamin, which people often lack during this season. You’ll not only get a nice dose of Vitamin D during the journey to and from the market, traveling through the market while doing your grocery shopping in the open air–instead of inside a supermarket–will give you an additional boost.
Resolution #3: Connecting with Community Being part of a community can have a positive effect on mental health and emotional wellbeing while providing a sense of belonging and social connectedness, so it’s no surprise that many new year’s resolutioners commit to enhancing their community ties through volunteering and other activities. We love that our farmers markets act as community hubs where shoppers can see their friends and neighbors, engage with vendors while learning more about the origin of their food and how it was made, and visit various informational tables run by local groups and organizations whose missions align with that of Down to Earth Markets. As a Certified B Corp with New York Benefit Corporation status, Down to Earth Markets considers the impact on our community, society, employees and the environment with every business decision we make, so we are proud that our farmers markets help foster community spirit.
Whether you are making big changes or sticking to your healthy habits, the Down to Earth team looks forward to being part of your journey in the coming months as we happily anticipate another year of bringing you some of the freshest, most nutritious, locally produced and sustainably sourced food that you can find anywhere.

Choosing the Best Cataract Surgeon: A Visionary Approach to Eye Care
Cataracts, the clouding of the eye's natural lens, can significantly impact vision and quality of life. When surgical intervention becomes necessary, finding the best cataract surgeon is pivotal for successful treatment and optimal visual outcomes. Understanding the qualities, expertise, and considerations that define a top-tier cataract surgeon is essential for patients seeking exceptional eye care.
Expertise and Experience
The best cataract surgeons possess a wealth of experience and expertise in performing cataract surgeries. Look for surgeons who have completed extensive training, certifications, and a high volume of successful cataract procedures. Their track record, years of experience, and patient outcomes are key indicators of their proficiency in handling complex cases.
Advanced Technology and Techniques
Top cataract surgeons stay abreast of cutting-edge technologies and employ advanced surgical techniques. They utilize state-of-the-art equipment, such as femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), to enhance precision, safety, and patient satisfaction. Surgeons embracing innovation often offer customizable options to suit individual patient needs.
Comprehensive Eye Care Approach
The best cataract surgeons prioritize comprehensive patient care. They conduct thorough evaluations, considering each patient's unique eye health, lifestyle, and visual goals before recommending treatment options. A holistic approach involves educating patients about their condition, discussing available treatment choices, and addressing concerns to ensure informed decision-making.
Board Certification and Credentials
Seek surgeons who are board-certified and have received specialized training in ophthalmology, particularly in cataract surgery. Board certification signifies that the surgeon has met rigorous standards of education, skill, and competency in their field, ensuring a higher level of expertise and quality of care.
Patient-Centered Care and Reviews
Exceptional cataract surgeons prioritize patient satisfaction and comfort. Patient testimonials, reviews, and recommendations serve as valuable insights into a surgeon's bedside manner, communication skills, and the overall patient experience. Positive feedback from former patients often reflects the surgeon's commitment to compassionate care and successful outcomes.
Collaborative and Supportive Team
A proficient cataract surgeon works alongside a skilled and supportive team. A collaborative environment fosters seamless coordination, enhances patient care, and ensures a smooth surgical experience. Support staff who are knowledgeable, attentive, and empathetic contribute significantly to the overall patient journey.
Transparent Communication and Personalized Care
Effective communication is paramount. The best cataract surgeons prioritize open dialogue, providing clear explanations about the procedure, potential risks, and expected outcomes. They listen attentively to patient concerns and preferences, customizing treatment plans to address individual needs while setting realistic expectations.
Ongoing Follow-Up and Postoperative Care
Top cataract surgeons offer comprehensive postoperative care and follow-up appointments. They monitor patients' progress, address any concerns or complications promptly, and provide guidance throughout the recovery process to ensure optimal healing and visual rehabilitation.
Referral and Recommendation
Seek recommendations from trusted sources, such as optometrists, other healthcare professionals, friends, or family members who have undergone successful cataract surgery. Referrals from individuals with firsthand experience can offer valuable insights into finding a skilled and reputable cataract surgeon.

😲 Well there’s your problem …. Not to mention the gaping wound in the fuselage 😳. The caption printed on the rear of the original image states” Crew members inspect the first major battle damage suffered by this B-17 Flying Fortress in 65 missions. One of the giant three-bladed propellers was torn from its hub by a near miss flak burst on a recent bombing mission over Germany. The heavy blades scarred the engine cowling, and ripped into the metal fuselage, narrowly missing the likeness of the Supreme Commander, before plummeting earthward. The Fortress was forced to leave the bomber formation after dropping its bombs, and came back to base alone. “Ike” was christened by General Eisenhower with a bottle of Mississippi River water. The intense day-after-day pace of the bombing offensive against targets in advance of Allied ground forces, oil refineries and communication centers left little time for the 5th star to be added to the “General’s” uniform. The Fortress is a member of the 91st Bombardment Group, commanded by Colonel Henry W Terry, Ossining NY. Crew members pictured here are (L to R): S/Sgt Conrad L Loheoefer (21), Amarillo Texas; T/Sgt Earl A Jones, Pennsgrove NJ; S/Sgt John Mikesell, Washington PA; 1LT Menford M Borgeson, Midway City, CA and S/Sgt Irvin W Kline, Norfolk NE” From what I could find, all pictured survived the war with Conrad Loheoefer passing away only in August last year. 🌎www.iloveahangar.com Feel free to repost but please remember to tag us 👍😊 #aircraft #airforce #airshow #avgeek #aviation #aviationdaily #aviationgeek #aviationhistory #aviationlovers #aviationphotos #avnerd #instaaviation #militaryaviation #militaryaviationphotography #oldairplanes #warbird #warbirds #b17flyingfortress https://www.instagram.com/p/CUcmRgjBDCR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Pope Francis Names Two New Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS)
Fathers William (Bill) Muhm, CAPT, CHC, USN (Ret.), and Joseph L. Coffey, CAPT (Sel), CHC, USN, to be ordained bishops by Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio on March 25
The Holy See announced January 22, 2019, that Pope Francis has named two new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS). His Holiness elected Father William (Bill) Muhm, Captain, Navy Chaplain Corps, titular Bishop-elect of Capsus, and Father Joseph L. Coffey, Captain (Select), Navy Chaplain Corps, titular Bishop-elect of Arsacalitan.
Fathers Muhm and Coffey will replace Auxiliary Bishops Richard B. Higgins, who is retiring this year, and Robert J. Coyle, who was transferred last year as an Auxiliary to the diocese of Rockville Centre, NY. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, will ordain the two priests bishops in a solemn Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Monday, March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.
Commenting on the appointments, Archbishop Broglio said: “The Bishop of Rome has once again looked with pastoral solicitude on the global Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and recognized the need to assure adequate care of the 1.8 million faithful entrusted to her. I am delighted that both candidates have accepted to serve in a new way. They bring vast experience and deep pastoral solicitude to their new role.”
Father Muhm said: “I’m greatly honored and humbled to be chosen by our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Father to be a bishop of the Universal Church and an auxiliary bishop of the AMS, which provides Catholic ministry and spiritual services to VERY important Americans: service members, members of their families, cadets and midshipmen, civilians stationed overseas, and veterans at VA Hospitals.”
Father Coffey said: “I am humbled and honored to have been chosen by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, to assist Archbishop Broglio in his duties as the chief shepherd for the AMS. I am extremely grateful to my three shepherds from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, Justin Cardinal Rigali, and Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, who have given me the necessary permission to serve on active duty in the US Navy Chaplain Corps for these last 17 years.”
Here follows additional background information on the two bishops-elect.
Bishop-Elect William (Bill) Muhm
Bishop-Elect William (Bill) Muhm, son of the late James and Anne Muhm, was born in Billings, MT, in 1957 and raised in Denver, CO. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Business Administration from Colorado State University in 1980. He attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, RI, and was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Supply Corps in July 1981. After graduating from Navy Supply Corps School, he served aboard USS BELLEAU WOOD (LHA-3), making two Western Pacific (WESTPAC) deployments, and an assignment to the Naval Air Engineering Station in Lakehurst, NJ. After release from active duty, he worked as an accountant. From 1986-1989, he also served as a Navy Reserve Supply Corps Officer.
In 1989, Father Muhm entered the minor seminary for the Archdiocese of New York, under the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program (CSP), a vocations partnership between the AMS and participating U.S. dioceses and religious communities. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seminary (Dunwoodie) in Yonkers, NY, and was ordained a priest in 1995 by John Cardinal O’Connor. Father Muhm served in the Archdiocese of New York at parishes in Ossining and Staten Island. From 1996 to 1998, he served as a Navy Reserve Chaplain with Fleet Hospital 22.
In 1998, Father Muhm returned to active duty as a Navy chaplain. His assignments included Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan; USS WASP (LHD-1), making an extended post-9/11 deployment in the Arabian Sea; postgraduate studies at Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, CA; Training Support Center Great Lakes, IL; 1st Marine Division, deploying to Anbar Province, Iraq; U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD-6)/CTF-76, homeported in Sasebo, Japan; 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Camp Lejeune, NC; and II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune. Father Muhm retired from the Navy on May 1, 2018.
Bishop-Elect Joseph L. Coffey
Bishop-elect Joseph L. Coffey, son of the late Dr. William F. X Coffey, M.D., and Roseanita Schubert Coffey was born in Rochester, MN, on May 31, 1960. He is the fifth of nine children and the proud uncle of 46 nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews. He was raised in Philadelphia and is a life-long fan of all the Philly sports teams.
Father Coffey graduated from La Salle University in 1982 with a double major in English/French which included a year of study at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. After college, Father Coffey worked as a grade school teacher, a ski instructor in Switzerland, and in the automobile industry in Germany and Belgium for five years.
Heeding a call to the priesthood, he attended St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree (MDiv) and was ordained in 1996 by Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua. He earned a Master of Arts (MA) in Moral Theology, also from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in 2000.
While still in seminary, Father Coffey was given permission by Cardinal Bevilacqua to enter the U.S. Navy Chaplain Candidate Program in May of 1992 with the rank of Ensign. He stayed in the Navy Reserve for the next nine years.
Following ordination in 1996, Father Coffey was assigned as an Associate Pastor to St. Katherine of Siena parish in Philadelphia, PA. After five years in parish ministry, he was given permission by Cardinal Bevilacqua for full-time active duty as a Navy Chaplain in September of 2001.

26 deaths in 3 US convents, as nuns confront the pandemic
LIVONIA, Michigan (AP) — At a convent near Detroit, 13 nuns have died of COVID-19. The toll is seven at a center for Maryknoll sisters in New York, and six at a Wisconsin convent that serves nuns with fading memories.
Each community perseveres, though strict social-distancing rules have made communal solidarity a challenge as the losses are mourned.
Only small, private funeral services were permitted as the death toll mounted in April and May at the Felician Sisters convent in Livonia, Michigan — a spiritual hardship for the surviving nuns.
“The yearnings, throughout the pandemic, were to be with our dying sisters and hold our traditional services, funeral Mass and burial, to comfort each other,” said Sister Mary Christopher Moore, a leader of the Felician Sisters of North America.
For weeks the Livonia nuns went without Mass and dined in shifts, only one per table.
Those and other restrictions have eased in recent weeks as regular activities slowly resume.
But strict social-distancing rules remain in effect at the Our Lady of the Angels convent in Greenfield, Wisconsin, which provides memory care for nuns of the School Sisters of St. Francis and the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
Nearly all communal activities have been suspended since March, and the 40 remaining residents are not allowed to see visitors, said Michael O’Loughlin, communications director for the School Sisters of St. Francis.
“The changes are confusing for the sisters — the loss of their religious activities has been very difficult, with no Masses or daily Rosary in chapel,” he said. “They do not understand the virus and find it difficult to stay confined to their rooms.”
At the Maryknoll Sisters’ center in Ossining, New York, as at the Greenfield convent, there have been no new coronavirus cases in recent weeks.
“Thank God things are stable,” said a Maryknoll spokeswoman, Chelsea Lopez. She said 177 sisters are still residing there and abiding by health officials’ recommended social-distancing protocols.
Story continues
In several important respects, convents share some of the same health vulnerabilities as nursing homes, the hardest-hit sector in the U.S. in terms of COVID-19 deaths. In many cases, their populations are elderly and live in close quarters with one another.
“We realize that our communal lifestyle makes us, along with other religious communities, a target for this virus,” Sister Mary Christopher acknowledged back in May.
In Livonia, some of the nuns who survived COVID-19 infections have continued to experience weakness and respiratory problems, according to Sister Mary Christopher. Though in-person Masses have resumed, some of the sisters continue to participate via closed-circuit television or other electronic devices.
The 13 deaths — more than 20% of the convent’s population — have been a huge blow for the surrounding community, where the nuns played important roles. Those who died ranged in age from 69 to 99; they included a librarian, a nurse and several teachers.
The Felician Sisters “have been taking care of people in our community literally from cradle to grave,” said Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan. “Now we have less nuns that are available to work in the hospital, less nuns that are available in our teaching institutions, less nuns that are out there taking care of making sure our souls are protected.”
Brosnan, who took over as mayor of the city of about 93,000 in January, cited the nuns’ role in a school, a university, a hospital, a home for retired clergy and a hospice, all within walking distance of their Livonia compound.
“They’re responsible for my education through grade school,” she said. “They’ve educated my husband. They educated my three children. We put our hearts in their hands.”
At Our Lady of the Angels in Wisconsin, the nuns who died in March and April had retired years ago. Some moved into the facility when it opened in 2011.
Among them were Sister Josephine Seier, 94, who had been with the School Sisters of St. Francis for 79 years, and Sister Mary Francele Sherburne, 99, who spent 34 years as an English professor at Mount Mary University.
The eldest was Sister Annelda Holtkamp, 102, who spent 33 years at St. Joseph’s High School Convent in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
According to her order, Sister Annelda grew up with six siblings on a farm in St. Paul, Iowa, walking more than 4 miles each way to the Catholic school she attended.
In her 20s she joined the School Sisters of St. Francis. Her first duties were working in a convent laundry facility.
Her last assignment was at St. Mary’s Convent in Chilton, Wisconsin, where, according to the order, she was known for her embroidery skills: “I could make almost anything,” she said after winning ribbons at the county fair.
O’Loughlin praised the work of Our Lady of the Angels’ staff as the pandemic took its toll — working double shifts without any days off for weeks.
“The staff focused on all aspects of caregiving and, because of restrictions, also had to do their own shipping and receiving, housekeeping, pastoral care, maintenance and technical support,” he said. “They truly are heroes who have been going above and beyond the call for months.”

We sat down with some leaders in the company community of biohazard restoration that’s often referred to as crime scene cleanup, to explore an essential top of salaries and wages. As most of you might of seen with recent news coverage talking about the high salary and wages of a few of the professionals in this business. We chose to have a deeper look into this controversial company and see exactly what will be the salaries like and do they really deserve these high salaries. For excess of a 10 years, a single dangerous cleaner of crime scene cleanup in Midland has helped establish regional Crime scene clean up to near and far municipalities of taxpayers who are in require. Pictures of Midland Crime scene cleanup present our cleaners functioning in extreme states to clean up following grotesque fatal injury and grotesque fatalities which are not straightforward to check out but depict the actual nature of a crime scene. Statistics from the Physicians and Hospitals in Midland present that infectious diseases are rising and new details hits the news feeds our facebook feeds every day demonstrating us that individuals are not just concerned any a ton more about HIV but also new strands of Hepatitis, Ebola Virus, MRSA, as well as strands of Bird Flu proceed to propogate around Earth. The good news is we don’t see as numerous exotic circumstances in Midland of the United States, but we still have our fair share of risks. First we decided to get on the record with a few of the owners of a crime scene cleanup company in Midland Texas to discover whether the salary we are hearing about are accurate. What we found will surprise you and can make you want to look for crime scene cleanup jobs in Midland. With a salaried position you may have more duties and may be looking at a supervisory position. With a supervisors jobs you could be getting paid a salary anywhere from $40k to start to over $70,000 plus benefits. With cleaners that have experienced crime scene cleanup schools in Midland Television displays like NCIS provide a false impression of what occurs when blood is at a home. Many television exhibits and films alike share scenes depicting murdered victims being eliminated from a crime scene within body baggage from the law enforcement. They even often will show friends gathering collectively with their buckets of cleaning soap and water to cleanup the blood following the dead body is eliminated. This is much from reality and what really must be completed to properly clear up a crime scene; far out of what Crime Scene Clean Up Midland must perform and has brought on several folks to genuinely feel as though they must attempt to do it themselves. Although, we ought to emphasis that the pay for anyone doing crime scene cleanup in Midland Texas may vary drastically. הקהילה היהודית של סמילביצ׳י – Smilavichy – Смілавічы
You can find a “former” synagogue, probably built in the later 19th century, that is now (or was recently) a sewing factory. There are also old wooden houses which were part of the Jewish shtetl, and as in many towns in the region, these remain in use. The house of Soutine’s father Zalman Soutine, was apparently located on Minskaya Street (now Republican Street). There is a Jewish cemetery, and a monument marking a mass grave from the Holocaust.

חיים סוטין – Chaim Soutine
CHAIM SOUTINE born Chaim Soutine, son of Salomon and Sara, January 13, 1893, Smilavichy near Minsk, Russian Empire – August 9, 1943, Paris

Until 2012, in the homeland of Soutine in Belarus there was not even one of his paintings. The painting “The Great Meadows in Chartres” (presumably the year 1934) was acquired on February 8, 2012 at Christie’s auction for Belgazprombank. In 2013, Belgazprombank acquired at the Sotheby ’s auction a picture of Soutine’s Eve (sales price of $ 1.805,000), recognized as the most expensive painting in Belarus.
Smilovichi has recently reclaimed Soutine and there is now a permanent exhibition installed at the Art Center for Emerging Artists about his life and art, titled “Spaces of Chaim Soutine.” The exhibition is comprised of three spaces.

OSSINING, N.Y. – When Kristine Deleg decided four years ago to put her daughter into long-term care at a New Jersey nursing home, she thought she was getting the best of both worlds: continuous medical care for her persistently ill child at a facility less than an hour from home.
But when Elizabeth Poulos – who could not speak and struggled with lifelong respiratory issues, stomach problems and seizures – died Tuesday, the 16-year-old became the latest casualty of an adenovirus outbreak at Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, New Jersey, that has claimed the lives of seven children and sickened a dozen more.
That left Deleg, 52, wondering why the private care center didn’t tell her about the outbreak until Monday – nearly three weeks after Elizabeth was admitted to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey, and just one day before she died.
Deleg of Ossining, New York, never had an issue with her daughter’s care and said she was blindsided with the sudden lapse.
“I never suspected any sign of trouble,” she said. “That’s why I’m really shocked.
“You know that these kids are frail. It’s not like you and I,” Deleg said.
Elizabeth Poulos — who could not speak and struggled with lifelong respiratory issues, stomach problems and seizures — died Oct. 23, 2018, because of an adenovirus outbreak at the Haskell, New Jersey, long-term care center where she lived. (Photo: Courtesy of Deleg family)
“There was definitely a breakdown in communication …When you’re dealing with this type of situation and you’re dealing with these children that are so fragile, that’s something you have to do right away,” Deleg said. “I didn’t know the scope until literally the day she passed.”
How the virus wormed its way into the 227-bed facility, which provides treatment for severely debilitated and medically fragile children among others about 25 miles northwest of New York City, is difficult to know, New Jersey Health Department officials said Wednesday.
Adenoviruses are common viruses that affect the lining of the airways, intestines, eyes or urinary tract and are responsible for some colds, coughs, sore throats, pinkeye and diarrhea.
The illnesses are usually mild, but they can be deadly for people like Elizabeth. New Jersey’s state health commissioner, Dr. Shereef Elnahal, said the virus strain has a devastating effect on children with weakened immune systems.
Since 2015, the center had been cited for several deficiencies that could lead to the spread of infection, and it failed at times to properly supervise patients and handle medical equipment in a sanitary manner, according to state inspection reports.
But the center’s administrator said this week that staff members have taken all available infection control and prevention measures to protect clients’ health and safety.
The Wanaque Center is licensed to care for 92 children and 135 adults and can care for more than 60 children who depend on ventilators to breathe. But the state has barred the center from taking new patients until the outbreak ends.
Deleg said she is trying to pick up the pieces.
But she still can’t grasp the center’s lack of transparency. She would have dealt with things differently if she had known about the outbreak, she said.
Still, she’s unsure if her daughter would have survived, given the virus’ effect on Elizabeth’s exhausted immune system.
“My daughter couldn’t fight this anymore,” she said. “I think it was too much on her. She just fought a good fight. But one day I said to her, ‘You know what? I know you’re done. I know you are, sweetie.’ She couldn’t tell me in words, but I knew.”
Elizabeth Poulos, left, celebrates her 16th birthday in a party earlier this year with her mom, Kristine Deleg of Ossining, New York, at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, New Jersey. (Photo: Courtesy of Deleg family)

SITElab 11:
Jacob Hashimoto: The Dark Isn't The Thing to Worry About
SITE Santa Fe presents a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Jacob Hashimoto from October 5, 2018 – March 24, 2019. This exhibition features a range of new and recent works as well as a site-specific installation that integrates SITElab’s unique architecture. The exhibition, entitled The Dark Isn’t The Thing To Worry About, explores the balance of the natural world, and Hashimoto’s longtime fascination with the intersections of painting and sculpture, abstraction and landscape. Exploring these intersections, Hashimoto creates distinctive works comprising hundreds of bamboo and paper elements strung together and suspended, forming complex layered compositions. His accretive works reference video games, virtual environments, and cosmology, while remaining deeply rooted in art-historical traditions, notably landscape-based abstraction, modernism, and handcraft.
Central to the exhibition is an immersive installation made of brightly colored, and intricately patterned handmade Japanese rice paper “kites.” Clustered together in a cloud-like canopy suspended from the ceiling are layers of white, black, red, and yellow geometric tiles interspersed with bold and multi-colored patterns. Cured with resin, each piece is rich with a density and luster akin to encaustic or stained-glass, transforming the dynamic triangular space of the SITElab gallery.
Jacob Hashimoto Is generously supported by Karen & Steve Berkowitz and the patrons of SITE Forum.
About Jacob Hashimoto:
Jacob Hashimoto was born in Greeley, Colorado in 1973 and is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He lives and works in Ossining, New York. Hashimoto has been featured in solo museum exhibitions at MoCA Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Schauwerk Sindlefingen in Germany, and the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art in Finland.
