On the morning of August 19th 1966, the merchant marine vessel Pelican unloaded its cargo into the port of Los Angeles. Recently declassified information about the Pelican’s ship manifest confirms that the ship was carrying experimental materials for a nascent project Clover. Of the 425 drums of material, only 424 were accounted for. 

While government officials have not confirmed exactly what was in the lost barrel, its contents are believed to be approximately 55 gallons of an experimental substance similar to LSD. 

To anyone with a passing interest in the 1970’s music scene, this will not come as news. Tall tales of a lost ship full of experimental drugs were as common as disco, though the stories have been exaggerated. The most common form of the story features a drunk crane operator loading a shipping crate onto the wrong train, though in reality it was only a single barrel that went unaccounted for. The more outlandish forms of the legend include everything from a daring heist by a crew of rocker-pirates to shadowy government entities vanishing the entire ship for their own nefarious purposes. 

The reality was a simple logistical mixup, a mistake that can be tracked back to a simple addition error on an inventory sheet, an ordinary yet deeply embarrassing mistake on part of the government. Additionally, The information that revealed the lost barrel came alongside a report detailing project clovers lost asset tracking protocol. Protocol that reads as comically naive in hindsight, with guidelines including “monitoring local jazz bars” or keeping an eye out for “feminist thought.” With the benefit of retrospective, it is no surprise that agents were not able to track the barrel. 

Declassification of the Pelican’s manifest prompted an unexpected crossover with another niche legend of the 1970s Los Angeles music scene: the disappearance of the Knights of Altonia. 

Even today, many consider the Knights of Altonia to be a myth, but scant references to their existence can be found. According to a review from a 1977 issue of Jam! Magazine, the Knights of Altonia were a “D-List psychedelic glam metal outfit with more style than skill, known more for their disappearance than their music.” Though a 1997 retrospective from Tempo calls them “A band too ahead of their time to be properly appreciated” noting their flamboyant stage costuming and its significant influence on the aesthetics of the genre. 

To the frustration of music historians seeking to separate fact from fiction, the band featured an elaborate mythology, with each member claiming to be a “Wizard-Knight of the Mystic Tower” who traveled from their world to ours “on a journey through the Nine Realms to find the secret stone.” This has been the source of innumerable urban legends around the band. A common joke among hobbyist historians at the time claimed that the Knights did not vanish, but simply “returned to the Nine Realms.” Information on the band is so muddled that many music historians doubt their existence entirely. In fact, the only confirmed, physical evidence of the band’s existence is a photograph at the bottom of the Jam! Review, it features:

Lead singer and guitarist Donald Hawkins as his stage persona “Zozimos the Wise.” He sports a mane of dreadlocks, and a classic blue wizard hat and robe decorated with yellow stars.The robe is worn open to reveal Donald’s bare chest, along with velvet short-shorts and a pair of thigh-high leather boots. The article states that the glittery bright purple guitar in his hands was named “Excelsior.”

Rhythm guitarist Jon Todachine as “Wan the Witch King.” He wears a deerskin jacket, also open at the front, decorated with what appear to be crow feathers and small animal bones. The theme of bones continues to his belt buckle, which features an as-of-yet unidentified animal skull. This figure is presumed to be Jon, although it should be noted that the broad hat he wears features a curtain of beads that obscures his face. 

Bassist Riley Knox as “Chulainn the Horned.” He wears a full deer skull, along with a lit candle that appears to be slowly melting down over the mask. Most of his upper body is obscured by what appears to be a cloak of leaves. Beneath the cloak he appears to be wearing a pair of Nike Blazers. 

Drummer Marcus Wilson as “Magnus Fire-Weaver.” He wears a viking helmet over intricately braided red hair, a chain-maille loincloth, a pair of medieval bracers on his wrists, and nothing else. 

Most notably, a speaker on stage left is placed upon a large steel drum identical to the ones used by project clover.

A random essay that I wrote about nico for school that i thought i’d share, it’s below the cut!!

Nico Hulkenberg, born on August 19th, 1987 in Emmerich, Germany, is a high performing athlete who partakes in the FIA formula1 world championship. Nico holds the record for the most Grand Prix’s started with no podium, currently at 226 as of October 2024. But this does not define Nico’s racing career and I hope to show you why Nico Hulkenberg is still insanely talented, despite his lack of titles and podiums.

In 1997, at ten years old, Nico began his racing career by entering several German karting leagues and championships. He won the German Junior Karting championship in 2002 and won several more in the following years. Nico continued karting for another year until he moved to motor racing to start his journey to Formula one. Though this was a successful move, speaking as Nico would’ve been the German BMW champion until he was deemed of cheating by the Stewards and demoted to a third place finish in the championship in 2005. He moved to formula three after his failure to finish first in the BMW championship, but chose the less competitive German series rather than the European, where he finished fifth after one win. He entered A1 grand prix in 2006-07, where he won 9 races, leading his team from 15th to the champions. He moved back to formula3 in 2007, where he won a few impressive races and overall finished third in the championship with four wins. He followed with another year of formula3, becoming champion while also working as a test driver for the formula1 team Williams. He moved to GP2.

During the off season, Nico scored several poles in the Asian GP2 races, causing an impression on formula1 teams watching the young driver. These pole positions he scored may have been the reason Williams chose him as the first to test the newly modeled FW30. Nico won three consecutive races with ART in the main GP2 series, bringing him to the championship battle with Grosjean, who graduated to F1, leaving Nico to be the first rookie to win the championship since Lewis Hamilton in 2006.

This then led Nico to his debut in formula1 as a full time racer for the Williams team. Nico’s rookie season consisted of him constantly chasing points and performing well, though he was outperformed by his veteran teammate, Rubens Barrichelo, and finished 14th by the end of the season. His best moment of the season was his pole position in Interlagos, which was a complete surprise to everyone, though it did not lead to a win nor a podium.

Nico left Williams after his rookie year and spent one year away from an official seat in 2011, now working as a reserve driver for Force India and usually racing FP1 for the team, then followed by taking a full time seat for the team in 2012. Nico had nearly earned himself several more wins and podiums in his time with Force India, but seemed to always lose them when he was so close to reaching them. Nico finished the 2012 season with eleventh place in the standings before announcing his departure from the team after an earlier signing with Sauber. Nico raced there for the entirety of the 2013 season but had no outstanding moments and finished with a dull season before returning to his previous team, Force India, once again for 2014. The car had benefits from the Mercedes high-classed power unit, and Nico often took it into points but did not get a podium. He finished the season in 9th with 96 points, finishing above his teammate, Sergio Perez, even though the Mexican had stood on the podium that season.

In 2015, Nico continued another season with Force India, where he faced many problems with his car and his own doings. He finished the season in 10th behind Perez, his best finish being 6th in Austria. Nico still failed to receive a podium, but instead won the 24 hours of le mans in a Porsche 919, being the first active formula1 driver to do so in 24 years. 2016 was a similar season where a podium did not come to him, yet again to teammate Perez. Nico finished 10th in the standings, and soon decided to move to a manufacturing team, Renault.

His first season with Renualt was another of the same, followed by constant Q3 qualifying results, trios of sixth place finishes, and DNFs when he was so close to a podium. He finished the season in 10th and scored a total of 43 points. He was a promising contender to help the new Renault team to be a competitive team once again. Nico’s next season with Renault was promising, taking 7th and 6th several times throughout the season, though the pressure from Sainz continued to grow throughout the season. Nico finished the season in an impressive 7th, proving to be the best of the midfielders, finishing just behind both Ferraris, Mercedes and Red Bulls. Nico still was unable to gain a podium, but was beyond ready. For the 2019 season, Nico was no longer racing with Sainz, yet now Ricciardo, who took the higher results for most of the races, where Nico faced pressure from both his teammate and the aggressive McLaren drivers, the rookie Lando Norris and his previous teammate Carlos Sainz, Nico finished the season in an overall 14th with 37 points. A month after Nico had a rough crash, Renault confirmed his departure for the team and their decision to replace him with Esteban Ocon.

For 2020, Nico failed to find an official seat to race with, and everyone had deemed this as his retirement. He returned as a reserve and test driver for Racing Point in this year, and replaced Perez twice after the Racing Point driver tested positive for Covid19. One race was unsuccessful after an issue with the car, and the next he finished 7th. Nico did not race in a formula1 car again, other than occasional testing and reserve, until 2023.

He returned to the sport with Haas, racing alongside Kevin Magnussen. This was a complete shock to everyone both in the sport and watching. He replaced 7 time world champion Micheal Schumacher’s son, Mick Schumacher, who did not receive a seat for 2023. Nico finished the uneventful season in an overall of 16th, his highest finish being 7th. Most of his races resulted in no points, but he outperformed his Danish teammate who finished the season with a mere 6 points compared to Nico’s 9.

The 2024 season, which is not finished by the writing of this document, Nico is tenth in the standings, right behind both Mclarens, Redbulls, Mercedes, Ferraris and one Aston Martin. Nico has had a swell season, constantly making it into the points and having 31 points for the season. He has finished all races, minus Monaco where he DNF’d due to a battle between Kevin Magnussen and Sergio Perez, where the spinning car of Sergio took Nico out with it.

Now that I’ve given you a full recap of Nico’s career and its lack of wins and even podiums, I’m going to explain why he is a talented driver, if his results didn’t do it for you. Nico was described as “the best driver that never was” by Frederic Vasseur, the team principle of Scuderia Ferrari, which is a lot coming from a person who owns a team with 16 world championships to a driver without a single podium. Haas has been around since 2016, having 6 drivers, and Nico has been the most consistent driver out of all of them, finishing constantly around 10th-5th, which I personally believe is beyond impressive. Even though Nico has just recently stepped up to be a constant Q3 contender, he has always been known as a threat to everyone else in the mid-pack. I also believe it is a matter of the car Nico is driving. Though he has managed to bring all of his midfield cars to their best results, he lacks the powerful car to challenge the Redbulls, Mercedes, Ferraris and no McLarens. It was later revealed that in 2014, if Mercedes hadn’t signed Lewis Hamilton, they would have taken Nico. I think this would have absolutely made Nico a champion. The multi time junior champion was thought to be the next world champion, and could’ve done so just with a faster, more powerful car. Nico has an adaptable and quick driving style, adjusting to anything thrown at him. I mean, it takes a pretty adaptable driver to have driven for 7 teams, right? His driving style in early GP2 days and rookie year was so aggressive and he drove the car to its limits to keep it in its grip limits, but modern tires required smoothness that his driving style did not fit. Nico is an early breaker and is insanely talented when it comes to managing the pedals, though his style changed from aggressive to smooth to be kinder for the tires, he is great at qualifying for his quick one-laps, where he’s constantly on the grip limit.

The difference between Nico and his teammates, Magnussen in specific, is the fact that Nico breaks earlier than the Dane, leaving him with less speed on the turns and giving him a better exit than Magnussen, where he then accelerates faster by a quicker ability to full throttle. Even through the chicane, he can hold out a faster speed through all parts, including the quick turns, which gives him an overall faster time compared to his teammate. He keeps a higher minimum because of this. He decelerates way harder and gets a huge advantage on the turns.

As Nico is a veteran driver on the grid, third oldest behind Alonso and Hamiltom, he is experienced, more so than some of the younger drivers. Nico doesn’t rely on dangerous and harmful driving, yet his smooth and level headed mannerism and his very important adaptability that draws teams in to consider the German as a contender for a seat. If anything changes in the race or doesn’t go how Nico had wanted it to, he is quick to adapt and continue out the race with the challenges or changes that were thrown at him.

While most drivers are described to be all bark, no bite–like Norris, who talks himself up then ;proceeds not to perform in the way he said he would–Nico is quite the opposite, all bite no bark. This goes in the sense that the veteran driver is insanely humble and quiet, doesn’t speak up and is not very boastful. This also goes on the track. Nico is speedy and there’s no telling that he’s behind you until he’s pressuring and takes a late break overtake.

Nico Hulkenberg is seen as a champion in waiting and the career he deserved never came to him. He spent years being crowned champion, winner, podium sitter, then entered the sport he’s been waiting his entire life to be in, to never stand on even the lowest step of the podium ever again. Nico had won Le Mans, and sometimes I start to wonder if his career was fit for WEC instead, and how it would’ve changed if he stays. June 14th, 2015, was the last time Nico had ever sat on a podium, and it wasn’t even for the career he loved most. Nico never succeeded, and his talent was left to waste and rot and never seen for what it truly was. Nico truly was the greatest driver that never was.

Absolutely <3 in fact, you can have many cool facts on Jo On her 8th birthday (7th April 1993) , Ellen gave her a diary and William gave her bow and arrow set with Jo saying Ellen had one when she was young.

In 1994, she took a piece of paper from John after he forgot it thinking it was for her. On the 19th of September 1995, she declared she wanted to be like her dad and she started calling it her journal in January of 1996.

In 1997, she punched one of the boys in school because he wouldn't leave her alone to the point he went down hard. On the 15th of June 1997, she began training with someone called Shawn.

January 17th, 1998 is when she meets Gordon and on her blog she writes " One thing I know for sure - I'm definitely NOT gonna call him "Uncle Gordon". :-)."

6th March 2001 is when she meets Ash (called Miles in her blog) but says that he isn't as cool or hot as Gordon.

22nd August 2002, she sneaks out on a case with Gordon and Ellen finds out and gets pissed (basically like the No Exit episode).

10th April 2003 she calls herself an official hunter!

18th March 2005, she and Miles place Jo's entries onto a site only for hunters.

Her last entry being on the 16th of June 2006 where she drops her email in case anyone wants to talk to her and asks for Rick (a love interest) to get into contact.

── tldr: matty, born in maine to a struggling single mother, faced hardship early in life. his mother's erratic relationships and eventual abandonment when he was ten left him traumatized. raised by his uncle, matty spiraled out of control during his teen years and was frequently in trouble with the law. his side business of selling some w**d to a small amount of local customers supplied him with some pocket money, but money was always tight, and with relentless pursuit for cash it's a surprise he managed to graduate at all. bogged down by his upbringing, he gave up on life before it really started and thought his life would always consist of working in his uncle's diner, but when the latter died suddenly of a heart attack, matty faced true introspection for the first time when he found his father's name on the back of a piece of paper while cleaning out his uncle (and mother's) things. he decided to seek him out – for reconciliation, for revenge, who knows? and shortly after arriving to the city, he started to try and find an in with the syndicate in order to climb up in life. when in rome, right?

── full bio: matty didn’t have an easy start in life. born in maine to a single mother, lani, the woman struggled to hold down a job that allowed her to take care of her baby. they lived paycheck to paycheck for a few years until she saw no other option than to return to her hometown, where her brother had a diner. when she worked at benny’s as a waitress, things were better for them, but lani was perpetually exhausted trying to raise a child all by herself, and to escape the harsh reality she would flutter from man to man, always getting swept up in empty promises that would leave her heartbroken when she inevitably ended up alone again. when matty was ten years old, his mother decided to follow after her then-boyfriend, leaving her child with her brother and leaving both benny and matty in the dark about her whereabouts or plans to ever return. obviously, this abandonment was traumatic for the young boy. benny was good to him, albeit entirely out of his depth, but despite his best intentions, matty spiraled out of control – first out of grief and pain, but later, in middle and high school, he became nearly unhinged as he found ways to deal with the realization he was left behind. benny tried his best to keep his nephew in check, but the boy was tough, skipping school, getting into street fights, and - on a few occasions - getting arrested. nothing seemed to stick to him, until eventually, even his uncle had enough, and gave him an ultimatum when he was a senior: clean up his act, work in the diner and make sure he graduated, or move out. matty knew he couldn’t be self-sufficient yet despite various illegal side hustles, and so reluctantly, he began bussing tables at the diner, doing just enough in school to get by, and keep himself to himself just enough to stay under the radar of the local boys in blue. it worked: he managed to graduate (barely), he was reliable (enough) at work, and with age, he seemed to find some stability. that was, of course, until november 3th, when his entire life was shaken once again. it was incomprehensible, the suddenness of his uncle’s heart attack, but the chaos that ensued over legalities and formalities only added fuel to the fire, though it wasn't until the end of the month that matty reached a breaking point, while he was cleaning out his uncle's house and found some of his mother's things – including a name he didn't recognize on the back of a picture he'd never seen before. it didn't take long for matty to put two and two together, and for the first time in his life, he could redirect his anger to a person he didn't also love. his father. even the word itself sounded dirty. he wasn't sure if it was anger or jealously that he felt when he googled his father's name and saw a successful man, but whatever it was, it sparked a fire for the first time in the young man's life, and before he knew it, he'd packed up his pickup truck and was on the road. without much of a plan and driven only by a desire to finally have a better life, he disappeared into the night and headed down to the city to try his hand at the less than savory world of the big apple. and for a man with few morals, the syndicate might just be the perfect starting place.

He would never admit it, but she was. She knew it as well. The minute she flashed her big blue puppy dog eyes, she got whatever her heart desired from Noel. Mary was not a fool for this trick however and has had to have multiple talks to Noel about toughening up and being a bit more strict with her, but he can't help it. Molly looks just like her mother and Noel can't seem to see through it. She was a very expressive young girl, always doing some sort of art or sport. She took a liking to her mother's song-writing and has helped her on many occasions writing tunes for her father or other famous celebrities. Molly was named after her mother's maiden name, Quinn, being Mary's previous surname. This was because her mother and father had recently gotten married after finding out they were pregnant with their daughter. Mary was devastated to say the least, when she realised that Quinn wasn't going to be her last name, and that it was now Gallagher. Of course, it was her decision to change her name but it still upset her nonetheless. So Noel went to the nurse while Mary was feeding their wee one, and gave her the name. The rest was history.

For starters, he was born prematurely and scared the life out of his parents. He almost died, something about his lungs not breathing properly. Noel was trying to see what was wrong with his son but the nurses wouldn't let him even hold Beckham. He eventually decided to just pick him up, ignoring the words from the nurses, and held him against his bare chest like he had done with his other 3 children. Like a miracle, Beck started breathing normally, matching his breaths to his fathers. As he grew up he became more and more rambunctious, only ever having the energy of a mosh-pit at all times. The amount of times he's woken his parents up is too many to count on a hand, the amount of times he's gotten in trouble for not staying still in class is too many to count on a hand. Beckham never got any smack from his parents though, of course not, he's their miracle baby. Noel and Mary are just happy that their little boy has the lung capacity for all the gleeful screaming and running around he does all the time. When he was a teenager he stopped all the girl's hearts too. No one was every pined after more than Beckham Eoin Gallagher in his high school. So much so in fact, he had 3 dates to the prom because he was too nice to say no. He switched them out every little bit, and never got caught surprisingly. His future wife, Natalia, was the school's prom photographer and has photos of him with all 3 dates and will never fail to use it to her advantage.

He had a strong relationship with his twin sister, Cecilia, and they were stuck together like glue. They had gotten split apart in year 2 at school, and it was such a mess Mary had to go in there and try to negotiate with the principal to put them back together. They had been in the same classes up until high school, this is when they wanted to be as far apart from each other as ever. Kieran ended up befriending Jackson Hughes, Mary didn't like him too much. He had gotten better after his mother started him up at therapy, he started gaining his relationship back with Cecilia, and is all together better now.

She had many times offered to help tutor Kieran, but gave up when she could feel the glare he gave her from across the dinner table. Celia couldn't stand being so distanced from her built in best friend. When Kieran had nearly died, she stayed by his side the whole time in the hospital, not even leaving to go to school. The two eventually reconnected and became closer than ever. She became a journalist in The Sunday Times when she was 19 years old and is quite well-known in England.

She's absolutely spoiled in every way, and she likes to get what she wants. She is in no way though, a brat about it. Penny, being the youngest and by a good amount of years, had a lot of her parents attention. Mary always dotes on her because it's her last baby and she just wants to cherish it as much as she can. Noel just can't say no to a little girl her wants a pretty pink dress and princess shoes. Yes, her parents were getting old, and yes, that sucked for her, but her siblings always stepped in when her parents couldn't. In fact, Penelope was the closest with her oldest sister Molly and older brother Beckham. They adored her. She was born to be a princess and every one knows it. She became really into fashion at a young age, and she is now her own little fashion icon. Gen Z took a liking to her unique outfits and she blew up on tiktok. She often got Noel to join in on her tiktoks too, which people loved! He was very gentle with her, he didn't mind being goofy if it meant Pen would giggle away. Everyone thought it was precious. Penelope is also known for tricking people into thinking Oasis was getting back together, showing her Uncle Liam and Aunt Sarah whenever she could in videos just to make her father mad. Mary did put an end to this if you were wondering.

For the non-UKers out there

@imstressedx pinged me for a summary of the UK Secondary education system the other day, and I thought I'd add it as a post in case other people could make use of it (along with some other specific dates for episodes).

There may be some slight inaccuracies as the English system I went through is a teensy bit different to NI, but for broad strokes it should be accurate enough for most cases:

Secondary school runs from age 11 through to 16, with some schools like Our Lady Immaculate having an attached/integrated sixth form college for 16-18 (there are also standalone colleges, which aren't called sixth form, for students who's schools don't have them attached, or have more specialist courses - I went to one such standalone myself). This is different to an American/Canadian college, which is equivalent to our University (or "Uni", as most people would refer to it as, colloquially)

The girls are just starting their GCSEs in S1, which is technically Year 11 in NI but they would be referred to as 4th years. They're Year 12/5th years in S2, and would have taken their GCSE exams (usually between 7 and 10 subjects) in the May before S3E1.

Once they passed (barely in Michelle's case), they would pick 3-4 subjects to study as A Levels in Sixth Form, which lasts two years. Lower Sixth is where they would do AS courses, which are half of a full A Level, and would then continue to do the same subjects (possibly dropping one like I did) as A2 courses in Upper Sixth. In general, these would just be called "A Levels", rather than A2s.

At the time of Derry Girls it wasn't compulsory for them to do Sixth Form (mandatory schooling only went up to the August after they turned 16), so any of them that failed could've gone straight to an entry level job. They could've also done other courses depending on what was offered in Sixth Form, such as a vocational certificate or BTEC, which are for less classroom based and more practical skills.

Summarised as thus:

4th Year/Year 11 - 14-15y/o - GCSE - S1E1-S1E6 (S2E1 takes place in the summer holidays between S1 and S2)

5th Year/Year 12 - 15-16y/o - GCSE - S2E2-S2E6 - Exams take place in May, S3E1 takes place in the summer holidays between S2 and S3

Lower 6th/Year 13 - 16-17y/o - A Levels (AS Courses) - S3E2-S3E5 - AS exams take place in May

Upper 6th/Year 14 - 17/18yo - A Levels (A2 Courses) - S3E6-S3E7 (Interestingly, despite S3E7 saying it takes place a year later, it's only 6 1/2 months later)

We can also go a step further, and get some exact dates for episodes. We know all of S1 and S2 from Erin's diary, but there's certain things in S3 that we can use as markers.

S3E1 takes place on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd of August 1996 (GCSE results day was 22/08)

S3E2 ends with Jenny and Aisling on CiN, which aired Friday 22nd November (the girls followed Mary on the Tuesday before, which would be the 19th of November)

S3E3 wouldn't have been before Easter 1997, as Barry's operated seasonally and reopened for the year then.

S3E6 is the only other episode (aside from "The Agreement") with a definite date, obviously having Sean's death take place on 31st October 1997.

S3E7 ended on Friday 22nd May 1998. Erin and Orla's/Jenny's parties likely took place Saturday 16th May
