Spring 1990 Demri and Layne by Krista Kay.

Some of the photos come from the book "The Dark Room".

Demri painted the blue bubbles and did some art in some of the photos.

As for what Demri is wearing in photo 3, Krista remembers: “The dress was Demri's. Actually, it was more of a brocade white top, I think. The veil was mine. I can't remember what Layne said, but it got him a momentary stern look from Demri and he deserved it. I love his smile here.”

About the last photo, Krista says: "A close-up of a Demri & Layne contact sheet printed in 1990. Dusty, faded, poor exposure, Layne blurred, the beast to her beauty, and Demri lit up in a lost moment. For me, it was always Demri & Layne, not Layne & Demri. They were a pair but Demri would richocet energy and the spotlight always seemed to find her while Layne was introverted, watchful. I want to share a brief glimpse of a treasured soul on the day we lost her. Hopefully, she gained peace on this day. By the way, I always forget the significance of October 29th until I see the IG reminders. ♡" [October 29, 1996 is when Demri died, aged 27, because of an overdose after being clean for years.]

Demri and Mara were soul sisters, according to Mara.

💬 Mara Whelan: “We have a moon that my kids know as a Demri moon – when it’s just a sliver of a fingernail of a crescent. That was her favorite time of the moon.”

 “She was the most beautiful soul that ever existed. What I would do to feel her hand in mine again.”

“Layne got Sadie as a kitten from me. He always wanted to have a baby girl with Demri and name her Sadie. When Demri found out he had named his kitten that she was furious because that name was supposed to be reserved for the daughter that clearly they would never had. I am glad he didn’t wait to use the name.”

but here's the story !

And I'm also sharing many never before seen photos that I have.

Just because Michele A. Mangiapane Gardner and her groups are so fckn awesome!!!

This was a common scene in our crew apt

We were always around the bands either doing sound for their gigs ,going to the lake,or just kicking it at the apt smoking herbs and playing video games.

Our hours were from 3pm to 6am

And sleep Was almost impossible.

Sometimes the floor and corner w my hands over my ears was the only way to sleep or rest ( as seen in pic)

All the Aic ,SG,and MLB and all.their friends would often hang at our Apt where our sound and lighting crew were living at the time for about a 5 year period or so.

Or sound and lighting crew consisted of about 10 guys ,my father brother and I were in the crew as well and we used 2 upper floor Apts in this building

Demri and Layne lived in the next apartment to us. Those 2 love birds!

In the building next to us was our small music warehouse whare we stored our sond gear, and which had about 12 bands storing their gear and practicting / reheasing there,

ALice in chains/ Motherlovebone/Soundgarden/ Living color and other local Seattle bands

In this photo the guy in the background works w our sound and lighting co his name is Mikey H

My brother is sitting right next to Layne but he's cut out of the pic from first angle,

The other pics are our crew and bands hanging at our crew apartment.

This was my family's life for a while.

I know this blog is for Demri's career, but I'd like to know something about her personal life. What was her relatioship with the other AIC members? And their girlfriends? Do you know? Thank you very much, you have a lovely blog here, very underrated, I hope more people find it and share it, as sadly today Demri is more remembered bc her Layne/AIC connexion or drugs than for her own careers.

I actually don't know, there's very few photos of Demri with AIC members or their girlfriends.

This is the only photo of her with the band (plus girlfriends that no one seems to recognize, from the 1991 MTV Awards). They look all in friendly terms:

She was touring with the band when they were opening for Van Halen. She stopped doing that when it became "an issue" (so I've read, I suppose it means drugs).

There's some photos of Demri with Sean Kinney (aka the funny drummer), from 1990 and 1991:

She was also close to his sister Melinda (in 1988 by Randy Houser):

No photos with Jerry, aka "The Riff Lord" (who was the closest to Layne, like matching tattoos, lived together before AIC signed in, etc), but with one of his girlfriends at a time (he dated multiple women, saying he doesn't believe in monogamy), Krisha Augerot. They actually worked together, so maybe Krisha met Jerry through Demri?

Krisha (and Jerry, but not in this photo) would join Demri and Layne with Fabiola and other friends for drumming circles at Magnuson Park. This is from 1989 (all the info here...):

Demri also joined AIC in 1992 when took regufee at theJoshua Tree park flying over the LA riots after the murder of Rodney King by the police. I've just seen pics of Demri and Layne,no other band members or their couples.

I don't know anything about Mike Inez, he replaced Mike Starr in 1993, but I don't think she was close to him...

It would be interesting to know more about her friendship with the band and the other girlfriends. I'm pretty sure when they were touring together the women had so fun visiting all these cool places and cheering backstage or, in Demri's case, front row!

I’ve been busy a busy gal once again. Yesterday I knocked out 3 oversized tags. 1 large “Chatty” Demri & 2 medium AiC mags. I still have some finishing touches on the AiC mag tags. I’m going to work on even smaller versions of those sizes. Once I have enough made, I’ll put them up for sale.

Just finished this and very much enjoyed it . The experience of reading a story like this and then having all the music in hand to listen to chronologically and so much video (interviews , stories , shows ) available on YouTube was just cool . Can’t say I was ever a fan of Alice at the time (1990-) and in fact really dismissed them as a metal band . I came across something on TikTok about Demri and got sucked in to her and Laynes tragic rock love story and pulled the thread from there. In some ways I wonder if not being familiar made it an even more fun experience unearthing so much material . I now have 5 more grunge related books and a list of my favorite AIC and Mad Season songs and albums . RIP Layne and Demri . I keep trying to edit that song list but I keep finding more to put on it . I like the wierd older experimental shit they did when Layne was probably pretty strung out —-

One of the benefits of borderline hoarding/sentimental fixation is the unintentional time capsules you create when you hang on to nearly everything. Going through old file cabinets (if you’re the sort to have multiple file cabinets filled to max capacity with old papers) is like an archeological dig. Way in the back of a dusty metal cabinet in my basement, surviving countless moves and 35 years, sits a couple notebooks from college. One has marginalia with my scribbles to “Call Demri” and another has held a contact sheet for the end of a roll of film. I’ll bet it’s from 1990.
