Hispanic and Latin- American Horror Films:
I wish I could have finished this list for Hispanic Heritage Month, but at least I could still get it done for October.
Sadly, this year marks the passing of beloved Brazilian horror icon José Mojica Marins (aka Zé do Caixão, or "Coffin Joe").
So, I hereby dedicate this list to his memory.
Tumblr media
Please note: Permanent link availability is NOT GUARANTEED.  I wish I could have had more links to offer, but I’ve tried to rely only on free streaming sites (and Youtube, for short films). Tubi TV requires signing up, but it is still 100% free (and it’s also available as an app on IOS, Android, Xbox Live and the Playstation Network).  I will do my best to update links when there are changes.

More of the Same (Halloween Franchise Edition) :
(i did one for people who were complaining about VLD, suggesting other shows to watch that did things the same or better, might as well do a list for my current obsession)
Halloween 1978:
Christine (John Carpenter and Steven King. Besides the Rockabilly music, the rest of the score is very much like Halloween)  Made in 83, but is set in 78. The visuals are very reminiscent of Halloween as well.
The Thing. John Carpenter’s remake of the classic B-movie.
Friday the 13th (Part 1) Intentionally made to be a Halloween Rip-off. The killer twist was one of the better ones, and likely more of a Psycho reference.
Those that Came Before Halloween:
Psycho. The Grandfather of Slasher Movies. Hitchcock. Has Jamie Lee Curtis’s mom Janet Lee in it.
A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick)
Carrie (more Steven King)
Dual (1971)  (Steven Spielberg)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Black Christmas
The Exorcist
The Omen
Rosemary’s Baby
Halloween 2 (1980):
Came out the same year as “The Empire Strikes Back”.... “Laurie, I am your brother.”
My Bloody Valentine (1981) Another “cash grab” Holiday movie. Has another killer twist ending, much like F13 and Psycho. Decent practical effects and outside of the “love triangle” the rest of the characters are pretty well done in that ‘cheesy and dated’ way.
A Nightmare on Elm Street. Debut of Freddy Kruger, bacon-man dream eater.
Alien (1979). Single location. Soulless killer. Sigourney Weaver.
Halloween 3:
An American Horror Story (TV Show). The Halloween name was going to be an anthology of different movies that were going to be loosely connected to each other. This concept wasn’t liked during an era of Slasher Movies.... HOWEVER, this concept was revived under American Horror Story, as each season is set in a new location with new characters and are loosely based on other seasons.
Halloween 4 & 5 (the “child-in-danger” movies)
The Shinning. A dad turns on his family and attempts to kill them while cooped up in a snowed-in ski and retreat lodge in Colorado. The supernatural and mysterious “shine” allows the young son Danny to see ghosts of the past.
IT (TV and Movies): Children of small town tormented by supernatural alien creature that feeds on fear and in disguise as a “friendly” clown named Pennywise.
The Sixth Sense: Child Psychiatrist trying to help his young patient with a supernatural problem. (If Loomis left a sour taste in your mouth Malcolm is more palatable)
The Babadook. Mom is driven to her wits-end by the loss of her husband and the demands of a child with special needs. A mysterious creature called “Mr. Babadook” starts stalking the child and begins to torment the mom.
Child’s Play. Little boy gets the doll he always wanted, only for said doll to have been possessed by a murderer by voodoo magik.
The Ring. creepy child drowns in well, wants everybody to keep circulating the tapes. Mom has to save her creepy son from the ghost girl.
Halloween 6
Hereditary. A dark secret was left dangling over a family after the passing of the grandmother. The mother struggles to get over the abuse and trauma she grew up with, and at the same time cope with issues with her own children. The sins of the past return to consume their lives.
Split (more accurately: Unbreakable, Split, and Glass): A man with multiple personality distorter, one of which being a super-powered cannibalistic killer that demands “pure” women to be sacrificed. Secondary plot of one of the victims growing up living with an abusive uncle.... Glass sees a return of the characters from Unbreakable and Split, but they had been captured and institutionalized... Shyamalan twists abound, and why it is in this part of the list.
Jason Goes to Hell (Friday the 13th), made 2-years prior to H6, has a similar gimmick of Jason trying to kill off his family (a sister and niece we previously didn’t know about), bonkers dark magic, and him chasing after a baby.
Halloween: Twenty Years Later (H20)
Halloween (2018).... yes... recommending a different Halloween movie.
Scream. the movie makes a cameo in the background.
Jeepers Creepers. Killer that comes back every 20-something years.
Freddy vs. Jason. Same Late-90′s to early 2000′s problems with making horror-slasher films too camp. (Child’s Play had the same problems with Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky)
The Blair Witch Project (1999), the movie that killed slasher horror until Saw came out 5 years later. Why “shaky cam” took over horror and action movies.
Halloween: Resurrection
Don’t Breathe. The better version of this movie. YA’s break into this guy’s house to rob him. Only to find themselves in a Murder Home.
The Boy. Woman that is escaping from an abusive relationship is hired by an odd family to take care of a doll that they treat like their own lost son.
Unfriended. If you want more of that cyber-horror, and being a bleh movie.
The Gallows. Takes place at a school...
SAW.  why we have Escape Rooms now.
Rob Zombie’s Halloween (1 & 2)
House of A Thousand Corpses
The Devil’s Rejects
Machete
My Bloody Valentine (2009)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
Nightmare on Elm Street (remake)
Friday the 13th (remake)
The Blair Witch
Rings
Halloween (2018)
The Visit. (when Shyamalan began to be good again) Kids go spend vacation with Grandma and Grandpa, only to discover something is not quite right with them.
Prometheus/Alien: Covenant. Reboot/sequels to the Alien Franchise.
The Prodigy (2019). Child genius turned sociopathic killer.
No Country For Old Men, not a slasher/horror, but Anton Sugur practically qualifies as one.
Widows. Heist action movie of vengeful angry wives.

Diagnósticos contraditórios,soluções ineficazes.
Tumblr media
E nisso reside todo sentido em colocar no extraterreno, no mágico, no milagre neopentecostal parcela do governo, do poder administrativo brasileiro.
Pedro Augusto Pinho, administrador aposentado.

Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights in 5 minutes
This album was a mainstay for my circle of friends during high school. Its actually almost too good
She was all right because the sea was so airtight, she broke away
She was all right but she can't come out tonight, she broke away
—Stella was a diver and she was always down
When I'm feeling lazy, it's probably because
I'm saving all my energy to pick up when you move into my airspace
You move into my airspace
And something's coming over me
I see you in the doorway
I can't control the part of me that swells up when you move into my airspace
You move into my airspace
—Say Hello to the Angels
The icing on the cake to this legendary group, of course, was their impeccable fashion sense.

20-26 January 2020
This was a busy week preparing for the re-opening of the garden with our Heralding Spring event. Beds were primped, paths raked, pots arranged, labels cleaned and kokedamas made and hung.
Tumblr media
Our volunteer group Growing Friends spent all Friday getting their tent full of spring bulbs ready for the galanthophiles and everyone else who loves spring bulbs. One job I had this week was to assemble the bulb theatre which will house Galanthus, Iris and Narcissus over the next few weeks.
Tumblr media
Nell made some nice woodland planters with snowdrops, fern, rocks and logs.
Tumblr media
Friday we had a staff lunch to say goodbye to Michael, who is moving on to bigger and better things after gracing the garden for a quarter century. His proper farewell is next Friday evening, and by all accounts, it is going to be a big send off.
I am feeling much better and I finished my three weeks of antibiotics on Friday. Friday night the gas company knocked on the door, thankfully just after I finished making a delicious risotto for dinner, and had to turn off the gas. There is a big hole at the end of the street to try to fix a problem of water getting into the gas mains. It is expected to be off until Tuesday. Thankfully Ann has a back-up electric immersion hot water tank, so at least we can take hot showers, and a few electric room heaters. I was looking forward to making my favourite lasagne for lunch next week; with all the ingredients in the refrigerator and the oven being gas, means I just get to dream about it...
Plant of the week
Caprifoliaceae Lonicera elisae Franch.

Eight Standouts from the 2018 Jaguar Simola Hillclimb’s Classic Car Friday
KNYSNA, South Africa — First held in 2009, the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb has grown into one of South Africa’s premiere automotive events, with Jaguar joining starting in 2014. Over 17,000 people attended the 2018 edition, bringing much-needed revenue to the town of Knysna, which was badly battered by wildfires last June, mere weeks after the 2017 Hillclimb.
Due to a variety of factors, not the least of which is geography, South Africa’s classic car scene is a motley mix. Among the entries were plenty of Brits bearing the MG, Mini, and Lotus marque plus a grab-bag of Germans and Italians, homologation specials, and even bits of classic American muscle.
In all, 64 cars participated in the Classic Car Friday completion, from pre-war racers to air-cooled 911s and even an E34, divided up between eight classes. Many gathered in town for a show the day before the start of the event. Here are eight that stood out among the rest:
1959 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
At first glance, this red convertible looks like any other well-kept ’59 Corvette. Give it a second look, however, and its rollbar and racing seat will send your eyebrows rising. While that could mean anything with the hood down and the engine off, the owner left the hood open during the pre-event classic car show, betraying his car’s secret: a 5.7-liter LT-1 V-8. Classic American muscle is rare in South Africa, let alone 50s Corvettes with modern engines, so this car could very well be the only one of its kind in the country. The car finished sixth in the H8 class with a time of 54.788 seconds.
1984 Ford Sierra XR8
This South African native was one of two cars that bore the standard for the 1980s, the other being a 1988 BMW 325i. A South Africa-only homologation special created for competition in Group A racing, the Sierra XR8 is powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 from the Mustang mated to a Borg Warner T5 transmission. Only 250 were made. It finished tenth in the H7 class with a time of 56.230 seconds.
1963 Ferrari 250 GTE
No proper classic car gathering would be complete without a vintage Ferrari, and here that role was filled by this 1963 250 GTE. Though the car looks good enough to sit on the lawn at Pebble Beach, Hannes Pickard instead preferred to drive it in anger up the 1.2-mile course, posting a time of 56.230 seconds, finishing fourth in its H2 class.
1979 Porsche 911 Targa RS
Along with the mandatory Ferrari were several just-as-mandatory air-cooled Porsche 911s. While the ducktailed blue-and-white 1973 911 RS Rally made a strong case for inclusion here, as did a pair of 911 RSRs (a ’69 and a ’75), my personal preference for 911 Targas meant I had no choice but to go with this 1979 911 Targa RS. It finished ninth in the H7 class with a time of 55.836 seconds.
1968 Pontiac GTO
A late-60s Goat is just as unlikely of a find in South Africa as a 50s Corvette, and yet, here was this 1968 GTO. Though the factory engine was a 400 cubic inch V-8, this one was billed as having a 6.5-liter (397-ci) one. Packing the second-largest displacement of any vehicle competing in the 2018 Simola Hillclimb, the black-and-orange Pontiac posted a time of 1:00.412, taking first place in the H3 class. It also served well as a prop for a photo-op with South African comedian Mpho Popps, who made my stomach hurt from laughter for much of the weekend.
1972 Jaguar E-Type
Just like a choice had to be made between several Porsches, a similar decision had to be made between the two Jaguar E-Types on hand—the blue ’66 and the maroon ’72. While the earlier E-Type is easier on the eyes, the edge goes to the man brave enough to race a twelve-cylinder vintage Jag—the ‘72 boasts a 5.3-liter V-12, while the ‘66 features the 4.2-liter I-6. It placed second in the H3 class with a time of 1:06.338 seconds.
1978 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint The Sprint was the coupe version of the Giugiaro-styled Alfa Romeo Alfasud front-wheel drive subcompact. The car got its name from the south Italy factory in which it was built and the joint venture between Alfa Romeo and Finmecanica that built it. This ’78 Alfasud Sprint was powered by the 84-hp 1.5-liter flat-four. While that’s not much go, there’s not much for it to pull, either, as a stock sprint weighs about 2,000 pounds. The car finished third in the H6 class with a time of 1:03.856 seconds.
1972 BMW 3.0 CSL
The name BMW 3.0 CSL is one that needs no introduction to those familiar with touring car racing. Unveiled in 1972, the 3.0 CSL was a lightened version of the E9 3.0 CS made as an homologation special for the European Touring Car Championship. In all, 1,265 were made. This AC Shnitzer-worked example, was billed as having a 3.4-liter I-6 instead of the original 3.0-liter, however, which certainly helped when it came to running up the hill. He took top honors in the H7 class with a time of 48.159 seconds and fifth overall with a Classic Conqueror time of 48.062 seconds.

Beoplay H6 Headphones
Bang & Olufsen (B&O) (stylized as BANG & OLUFSEN) is a Danish consumer electronics company that designs and manufactures audio products, television sets, and telephones. It was founded in 1925 by Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen, whose first significant product was a radio that worked with alternating current at a time when most radios were run on batteries. In 2004, the company opened a factory in the Czech Republic where it employs approximately 250 staff producing mainly audio products.
Peter Bang (1900–1957), son of Camillo Bang, a successful Danish businessman, showed great interest in radio technology from an early age. After graduating as an engineer in 1924, he spent six months working in a U.S. radio factory. Upon his return to Denmark, he teamed up with his friend Svend Olufsen (1897–1949), whose parents made the attic of their manor house in Struer in Jutland available for experiments. When they officially opened their business in 1925, Bang concentrated on the technology while Olufsen dealt with business. There were a number of successful developments in the 1930s and 1940s.
The Beoplay H9s don’t neutralize quite as much noise as Sony’s pair, but that also lends them a more natural feeling.
It was, however, many years before their business became significantly profitable. The firm suffered a huge setback towards the end of World War II when its factory at Gimsing in Struer in Northwestern Jutland was burnt down by pro-Nazi saboteurs as punishment for the management’s refusal to collaborate with the Germans.
Undeterred, Bang and Olufsen rebuilt the factory, producing electric razors until 1955, and then going on to develop a range of radio, radiogram, and television sets, later influenced by designer Ib Fabiansen when he began work for the company in 1957.
In the 1990s B&O opened dedicated B&O stores selling directly to users instead of selling through retailers. Production of audio separates was discontinued in favor of mini-type audio systems sold, as was usual for B&O, at a price higher than the industry average.
For a pair of closed-back headphones (which, mercifully, doesn’t leak out much sound at all), these do a terrific job of making music, movies, and games sound wide and expansive.
B&O has a distinctive design appeal that Wired described as quality media delivery via striking objects. Their work with radios and loudspeakers led them to value high fidelity musical reproduction uninfluenced by technological limitations; in Danish Ærlig musikgengivelse, meaning honest music reproduction. To this end, psychoacoustics was important to designing and testing B&O products.
By 1960 Bang & Olufsen had begun its foray into global markets with star designers Henning Moldenhawer and Jacob Jensen. B&O hires designers rather than directly employing them in the company. David Lewis, who became involved with B&O in 1965 then went on to design most of the company’s products after 1980. In 1978, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City held an exhibition dedicated to Bang & Olufsen designs. It is known to give its designers a lot of free rein.
It’s also been discussed that Apple’s iPod design was inspired by Bang & Olufsen’s BeoCom 6000, a wireless telephone designed by Henrik Sørig Thomsen with a wheel to scroll.

🌻!
(I left most of this under a cut, because it’s long ahhhh - just me going on about Shakespeare headcanons for an AU I want to happen. Thank you for allowing me the space to ramble - I appreciate it)
My current brain project is figuring out how I would adapt a 1970s-2000s H6 Cycle, and yes - I won’t shut up about it on here because the Henry VI plays are my favorites for forever and all time (they were the reason I made this blog in the first place, so... you know).
I’ve thought to myself again and again... is this even worth thinking about? Trying to mesh the 1440s-70s with the 1970s-2000s might look incredibly messy in reality, which is fair. It might be information overload, also fair. But besides being aesthetically entertaining for me to think about (can you imagine the costumes? Like... I need someone with artistic ability to draw a 70s punk rock Joan of Arc), I feel like this production would raise questions about leadership and party in-fighting. Most of my research thus far (in this little project to keep my brain entertained in the times of furlough and productivity limbo) has been around the 1990s. “Weak” and “ineffective” are adjectives repeatedly thrown onto both Henry VI and John Major, and for pretty similar reasons: both were too nice, they couldn’t make decisions because they were trying to keep everyone in their respective governments happy. While the relationship between these two figures is not one for one, it does have me interested in the implications of indecisive leadership.
The English Shakespeare Company staged Henry VI Parts I and II in 1990, part one being a combination of Shakespeare’s 1H6 and 2H6, while part two was 3H6, which is how these plays are normally staged if not each done separately. They had somewhat of an Edwardian flavor to them, but the comparisons between Margaret of Anjou and Margaret Thatcher were there (played by the kickass June Watson). The comparisons are valid, and I feel like would color my production as well. Thatcher and Major were pretty well linked in the 80s, but the 90s saw a fizzling and estrangement to their relationship, just like Henry and Margaret by the end of 2H6 and start of 3H6, and I feel like I would want that to inform their characters in the adaptation. I highly recommend giving those ESC plays a watch if you haven’t yet - one of my favorite H6 productions, I won’t lie. (I linked them up at the top of the paragraph). I also think that these productions prove that a modern H6 Cycle can be done, and it can be done well.
I’ve also been watching a ridiculous amount of Spitting Image, which was a satire puppet show television series that aired from 1984 to 1996 in Britain. I originally found the show a little over a year ago while researching about British quiz culture (University Challenge’s host Jeremy Paxman was frequently featured on Spitting Image), but I recently rediscovered it while taking a class on modern Britain this semester. While watching some of the earlier clips I couldn’t help but feel that millionaire MP Michael Heseltine might be a good inspiration for Richard, Duke of York. Frequently shown as a suave, but manic politician thirsting for power, Heseltine and York seem to be pretty good fits for one another. It can also be said that how John Major was depicted on that show has many similarities to Henry VI - a bit clumsy (but in an endearing way), constantly stressed and overwhelmed, indecisive, one without much control over his party.
My brain has no idea what to do with the York brothers, but more research will hopefully get us there. My instinct is to connect them with the new Labour government of 1997, but I’m not sure if it’ll totally work. I’ll get back to you on that. There’s obviously still a lot to work out, but I would really like to see a production like this at some point. (Thank you for allowing me to ramble! ahhh)
