1968-1/2 Cobra Jet Mustang GT
April 1, 1968 - THIS DAY IN FORD HISTORY:
On April 1, 1968 Ford unvailed its newest secret weapon, the 428 Cobra Jet. It made its debut in the Mustang at Pomona, eclipsing the competition. Who can argue with the success of the Mustang at the '68, '69 and '70 NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, California? Certainly not us, because the history books (and NHRA records) have been speaking for themselves for more than 30 years.
What hurt the Cobra Jet's development was an ugly United Auto Workers strike that shut down Ford during the fall of '67. Development of the Cobra Jet didn't really get underway until December of that year, with the production of a couple of Mustang test mules, then the limited-production run of 50 Wimbledon White fastbacks produced strictly for NHRA competition. Some of those fastbacks were shipped to professional drag racers, such as "Dyno" Don Nicholson, Hubert Platt, and Gas Ronda, as an opening salvo for the '68 season. These gentlemen went to the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona with their fastbacks and earned Ford some respect. This '68-1/2 Cobra Jet Mustang GT fastback is a gleaming example of what renewed Ford's respect on the street in 1968. It's a concours restoration, right down to the Goodyear Polyglas bias-belted tires.

Gateway Classic Cars of St. Louis is honored to present this very Rare 1968 ½ Ford 2+2 Fastback Mustang GT R Code for sale in our St. Louis showroom. This ride is 1 of 1,299 Non-Shelby R-Codes and 1 of 1,044 Fastbacks produced in 1968. This car comes with the original bill of sale, original title, owners manual, First owners ID card, and other service documents that go back to the date of birth of the car. Powering this beast is the 428-4V Cobra Jet backed by a C-6 3 speed automatic transmission. It is putting power down to the ground by the 9" rear end with 3.91 Traction-Lok Rear Axles. This gorgeous ride is painted Gulfstream Aqua which out of all the Mustangs produced in 1968 only 6% were that color which makes it very rare being a R Code. The car was restored by a man that was honored as a Gold Card National Car Judge because of his restoration work done on Mustangs. This car has been restored to look and drive just as it did when it left Dearborn on July 1, 1968.

Top 8 Ford Muscle Cars That You Should Know About
Ford muscle cars were once some of the best of the muscle car era.
In the 1960’s, Ford basically ruled racetracks across the world. But in the streets of muscle car wars, Ford was still playing catch-up even with the Mustang. It wasn’t until Ford’s 1968 428 Cobra Jet, that gave Ford muscle cars were given serious street cred. If you’re considering a muscle car, or simply want to learn more about these majestic vehicles keep reading. We got you covered with all the information you’d ever want to know about the top Ford muscle cars that defined a generation.
1. One of The Best Ford Muscle Cars: 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E This is one of the most overlooked performance cars from 1968. The 1968 Cougar GT-E, is one of the rarest cars and is incredibly valuable today, and we can see why. If the Road Runner was at the top of bare-bones performance, then the Cougar GT-E would represent the other side of the muscle car spectrum with a price that reflects that. You do not want to overlook this powerhouse of a car. A GT-E package would cost the buyer $1,311 alone, which is almost half of the price of an entire 383-powered Road Runner, when this car debuted in 1967. When the Cougar debuted in 1967, Motor Trend named it Car of the Year. Which came as a shock, as many would assume that title would go to the more gussied up Mustang. These two cars do have the same engine.
2. 1968 Ford Fairlane Torino GT It’s no shock that the late 1960’s inspired a rise of budget muscle cars that spread like wildfire. After the Road Runner’s success, every other muscle car manufacturer raced to get their cars on the streets ASAP. Ford did not want to miss out and redesigned the Fairline Torino in 1968 with a Mustang like fastback that streamlined this car for NASCAR’s speedways. This car’s new shape came in a variety of engine, 289, 302, and also 390. So Ford built 600 of these hardtops with a 428 Cobra Jet and C6 automatics. 193 of these cars come with a 3.91 rear axle ratio. The car itself doesn’t come with much decoration, simply a badge on its front fender.
3. 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator The turning point for the Ford Mercury Cougar happened in 1969 with the Mercury Cougar Eliminator. This car isn’t totally Mustang’s cousin, as it comes from Ford’s slightly more upscale division that came into its own this year. This car not only has a convertible, but also an Eliminator option giving this Cougar some fangs. This car is longer, wider, and heavier than the 1968 version. The 1969 car has the same 111-inch wheelbase wit three more inches than the Mustang, which gives the Cougar more legroom. This vehicle’s body has a different style than the Ford pony, with a sharp crease on the flanks from the nose to each side, This design ends just at the edge of the rear wheel arches, which is not that much different of a design from how the Buick Skylark stood out from the Chevy Chevelle. Similar to the Mustang, the Mercury Cougar had a redesign in 1969, gaining 3.5 inches in length, and 3 inches of width. The Cougar Eliminator has a stripe down its flanks, sporting the word Eliminator with a sizeable rear wing like Mustangs and a hood scoop
4. 1969 Ford Talladega This car is on its own mission. Ford was watching the taillights of faster cars like Mopar and GM muscle rivals in the 1960s and early 1970s. This car was named after NASCAR’s newest superspeedway, Talladega. The 1969 Ford Talladega was Ford’s answer to Dodge’s Charger 500, so Ford built the street version of this car so it could qualify for racing. This car is similar to the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler. For this car to be eligible to race, NASCAR only required Ford to build 500 units. Instead, Ford built 736 all with a C6 automatic, 428 CJ and a column shifter. To make the Talladega, Ford had to extend the Torino’s front ends by 15.5 inches, also adding a 30-degree slant and a grille that’s flush-mounted. Ford then modified the rear bumper with a V-shape and mounted it, altering the rocker panels so the car would have an aerodynamic benefit. This design also staggered the rear shocks. The design has a few emblems of T above the fake gas cap in the center of the tail and door handles. This vehicle comes in three colors, but all have black hoods.
5. 1970 Ford Torino Cobra The Torino was the follow-up to Ford’s speedway superstars. While the 1968 and 1969 fastback Torino might not have done well on the racetrack, at a Ford dealership, this redesigned car jumped 52 percent in sales. Motor Trend even named this series the “Car of the Year.” This new model was a little fragmented with a bolder look complete with a dozen various trim levels, many that were considered to be new. However, these resign really grabbed the attention of automotive media, making this car appeal to America’s high-performance set. The Ford Torino Cobra also has strong mechanical DNA, making it the choice of several 429 big-blocks with Wide Oval tires, four manual gates, Competition Suspension, and a massive air scoop with 429CJ Ram Air. This car also has a blacked out hood and grille, making this car the very height of in this factory-fast time period. This car also comes in a range of comfort options, giving the driver a level of personalization with this car. The 1970 Torino is still a fastback, it just has the style and attitude to take on Road Runners and Chevy Chevelles. The Torino Cobra comes with three brand new 429 cubic-inch engines.
6. 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT Falcons were barely new in Australia in 1975. Since 1960 Ford offered a series of Falcons, with the twin being the Falcon four-door sedans that were sold in America. Since 1962, there were a few Austrailain market changes in design that were made in 1964. Ford of Australia started building its own signature auto-bodies under the Falcon name. It was the 1965 Falcon XP that was a make it or break it car for Ford. This car ended paying off when it was put head to head with its nemesis on the Australian market, The Holden. You might recognize the 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT as the car Mad Max drove, and you’d be right. But that’s not why this legendary Australian car is on our list. It’s because of this third-generation Falcon is legendary in performance for many reasons. Not only does this car look awesome, but it’s also a cross between the 1970 Torino Cobra and the 1973 Mustang Fastback. This car isn’t much different than it’s a generation before, but it does have a new front end and a twin-scoop hood like a Mustang. This car was made for gearheads, as it has a standard 351 Cleveland with 300 hp and a 380-pound torque. This is because of the lack of emission standards that were around when this car was made. These standards have since killed most performance cars in the United States. The 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT is four-speed, with a nine-inch rear end that is fitted with tall gears.
7. Shelby Mustangs The Shelby Mustang is a variant of the Ford Mustang that has higher performance value. This car was built by Shelby American from the years 1965 to 1968. Form 1969 to 1970, this car was then built by Ford. After the 2005 introduction of the fifth generation Ford Mustang, the Shelby was revived as a newer high-performance model, only this time it was built and designed by Ford. The famous 1965 Mustang Shelby GT 350, is a serious performance machine. Some buyers felt this car was too serious, so the next year the car replaced features like the fiberglass hood, adjustable Koni shocks, side-exit exhaust, and Detroit Locker rear diff were either removed, replaced, or just made optional. There was even a Paxton supercharger option in the 1966 design. The GT 350s were ideal for the track. Later the GT 500s were ideal for drag racing, as they were fitted with a 428 big-block. 1967 and 1968 Shelbys were able to go on low 14 second runs of quarter miles. There was also an even faster KR model made as well.
8. 1999 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning The 1999 Ford F-150 SVT Lighting, looks a lot different than these other muscle cars mentioned, but don’t let its appearance fool you. This car can be drag raced at 13.62 seconds at 101.16 mph, making this the faster ride of these muscle cars, which is impressive for a 4670-pound two-wheel pick-up truck. This car is the second generation of the SVT Lightning. You’ll see under its hood that there are hot rod steep sides. There’s also a supercharged 5.4-liter single overhead v-8 cam with a boost of eight pounds and 360 hp factory rating with 440 lb-ft torque. These trucks use a four-speed automatic transmission, a column shifter, and 18 inches, 295mm wide tires. This truck costs about $30,000, from 1999 to 2004 more than 28,000 of these trucks were made.

Custom Muscle Cars
America is considered to be the undisputed king of classic muscle cars.  So what is a classic muscle car?  Not all car enthusiasts agree on the muscle car definition, but we consider it to be a high-horsepower coupe with an occupancy greater than 2 people.  “Classic” is also a relative term.  Although we included a few muscle car models that spanned into the 1980’s, we consider a true classic muscle car to originate from the 1950’s through the 1970’s.  The late 1960’s to early 1970’s were the golden age of the classic muscle car in our opinion as it was prior to oil crisis initiated horsepower reductions and at the height of the muscle car manufacturers one-upmanship.

A Plethora of Upgrades Transform this 1968 Mustang GT Into a Stallion
Way back in the Paleolithic Age, before Ben Franklin invented electricity and Al Gore put it to good use inventing the Internet, people scoured their local newspaper’s classified section in search of cool cars. One such practitioner of this ancient art was New Yorker Brian Commisso, and in 1986 an ad for a certain 1968 Mustang caused his heart to flutter with abandon. “The car for sale was a 1968 Shelby,” he explains, “so I immediately grabbed my buddy and went to see it.”
Brian, who was erudite beyond his years, courtesy of HOT ROD magazine and other, similarly-infallible sources of automotive knowledge, needed all of two seconds to recognize that the very rusty Shelby on offer was genuinely very rusty but not genuinely a Shelby. “I wasn’t interested in the clone,” he recalls, “but the owner had another Mustang under a tarp that caught my eye. Further inspection revealed that it was an original S-code 390 big block with a top-loader four-speed and 9-inch rear end. It was about ten different colors, but it was an original GT, and it was all there!”
Brian Commisso has owned this 1968 S-Code GT since 1986.
Following a successful test drive Brian was able to subdue his enthusiasm sufficiently to induce the seller to sweeten the deal with a shed full of high-performance parts, including 428 Cobra Jet heads, a police interceptor crank, a 2×4 intake complete with carbs, a tri-power setup with all of its linkage, and a set of GT wheels and hub caps. After agreeing on a price, he brought his prize home and immediately began restoring it.
Though he had no formal training, Brian did learn plenty from his father, who worked as a Porsche mechanic in California during the early 60s. Growing up in car-centric Long Island also taught him plenty, including deep appreciation for fast cars and performance modifications. “One of my best car memories,” he recounts, “is from when I was about ten years old. On Friday nights, we would go out to dinner. This particular night, we were out on Sunrise Highway stopped at a light, and the two cars in front of us were revving their engines. I quickly noticed a ’68 Chevelle pairing up against a ‘67 Sting Ray. The light turned green, they went, and I was hooked. The people on the sidewalk watching the action were standing outside of a building called Baldwin-Motion.”
The mostly-stock body hides heavy modifications to engine, drive train, suspension, brakes, and interior.
Over a span of several years, Brian went through his Mustang and systematically returned it to as-new condition, with a few light upgrades added in. In 2001, he began showing the car, starting with a Shelby show at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut. “The show had original Cobras, Daytona Coupes, GT40s, and hundreds of Mustangs, but people swarmed all over my car. I won not only best-in-class but also best-in-show. My girlfriend, who later became my wife, jumped into my arms, congratulating me with the biggest kiss!”
In the ensuing years, Brian continued showing and driving his Mustang, but by 2010, the car began showing signs of wear, so he decided to go through it again. This time around, however, he made far more extensive modifications.
A TCI front and TCP rear coil-over suspension delivers superb handling and ride quality.
Brian wanted dramatically more power than the GT’s original 390 produced and found it in a 526 cubic-inch FE engine built by Dave Kogan at Kogan Motorsports in Island Park, New York. The foundation of this impressive power plant is a CNC machined 356 T6 aluminum block topped by medium riser aluminum heads. The bottom end includes a billet steel Eagle crankshaft and Eagle forged 4340 H-beam rods with ARP 2000 bolts. Domed 13:1 Mahle pistons complete the rotating assembly. A Comp Cams valve train, including a solid roller camshaft grind, roller rockers, dual springs, and 2.250-inch intake /1.750-inch exhaust valves fill the A-356 alloy heads. Originally built with a single plane intake and  Holley carburetor, Brian later decided to go with an eight-stack Weber intake manifold and TWI fuel system that includes TWI throttle body, mass airflow sensor, fuel rail and injectors, and an Aeromotive A1000 pump. The whole setup is managed by a FAST XFI 2.0 controller. A March Performance FrontRunner kit drives all accessories, including a Shelby water pump, 100-amp alternator, and Vintage Air A/C compressor. Spark comes from a FAST ignition box working with an MSD coil and distributor. Waste gas is sent on its way courtesy of custom made, Jet-Hot ceramic coated, long-tube headers, 3-inch pipes, an H-pipe with side cutouts, and Borla mufflers.
The 1968 Shelby Brian Commisso went to look at was a clone, so he cut a deal to buy this car instead- a genuine S-Code 390 GT.
Joe Rutner, of South Shore Performance in Freeport, New York, dyno-tuned the engine, unleashing a potent 747-horsepower at the flywheel, and 650-horsepower to the rear wheels, which is considerably more than double the 325 horsepower the car’s original 390 engine delivered. The big mill’s twist goes through a Hurst-shifted, TREMEC TKO five-speed via a dual-disc McLeod clutch and aluminum flywheel. For safety’s sake, the clutch package resides in a Lakewood scatter shield. A custom driveshaft links the TREMEC’s output shaft to a Moser rear end, built up with 3.73:1 gears, a locker differential, and 31-spline axles.
In keeping with the plan to upgrade this Mustang’s complete performance envelope, Brian addressed its inherent suspension and steering deficiencies. The original front suspension gave way to a TCI Engineering Pro Touring IFS arrangement, which features custom, 2.5-inch drop spindles, a 1.4-inch anti-sway bar, divorced steering arms, heliarc welded cradle and control arms, rack-and-pinion steering, and QA1 coilover shocks.
The 1968-1/2 Cobra Jet hood scoop isn’t factory, but it looks right at home on this car.
In the rear, Brian chose to go with a Total Control Products g-Bar 4-link setup, which lowers the rear of the car 2.5-inches to match the front. QA1 coilovers and a 0.75-inch sway bar help keep the rear wheels planted at all times. A ten-point, welded-in roll cage ties the whole chassis together and adds considerable structural rigidity, further enhancing the car’s handling prowess.
For stopping power, Brian turned to Wilwood. Slotted and vented 12-inch rotors are squeezed by four-piston calipers in both the front and rear, courtesy of a power-assisted 1-1/8-inch bore Wilwood master cylinder.
The Wilwood disc brakes on all four corners deliver excellent stopping power.
The car sits on BR series wheels from Vintage Wheels, patterned after the pin-drive, knock-off wheels that carried GT40s to victory at Le Mans and elsewhere in the 1960s. These wheels, which are pressure cast for greater strength, measure 17×8 in front and 17×10.5 at the rear. The fronts wear Sumitomo 225/45-17 tires and the rears are shod with Mickey Thompson SS rubber measuring 275/40-17. All four corners have 4.4” backspacing and that, combined with rolled fender lips all around, keeps the tires clear of the bodywork.
Aside from the rolled fender lips and a 1968-1/2 Cobra Jet hood scoop, the only other body work done to this car was a new Dynacorn quarter panel, installed to address minor rust. The rest of the sheet metal was rust free and straight, so all it needed was normal surface preparation for paint. That, and the paint job was done by Keith at K & M Autocraft in Deer Park, New York. At Brian’s request, the car’s original Highland Green color was slightly modified with the addition of light metal flake.
BR series wheels from Vintage Wheels are patterned after the pin-drive, knock-off wheels that carried GT40s to victory at Le Mans.
Brian turned to Sunrise Auto Upholstery in Lynbrook, New York to upgrade the interior in both form and function, while still retaining an overall vintage look and feel. Leather covered Corbeau seats provide far more support than the originals, and the high backs include slots for RCI Racing shoulder straps, which are part of the car’s 3-inch wide, 4-point harness. A 15”, 9-bolt Moto-Lita steering wheel looks right at home, as does the full complement of AutoMeter Sport Comp gauges.
Since getting the car back on the road several years ago, Brian has relished every moment with it. He’s had great success showing the car, both locally and out of state, and has enjoyed every bit of its fantastic performance, with a memorable ticket or two to prove it. Whether sharing it with others on a show field, or winding up that big block Shelby and running through the gears, this car is exactly what he envisioned when he set out to build his dream Mustang.
The 526 cid Shelby FE engine delivers 747.5 horsepower to the flywheel.
A March Performance FrontRunner kit drives all engine accessories.
TCI Engineering’s Pro Touring front end kit includes custom 2.5-inch drop spindles, a 1.4-inch anti-sway bar, forged spindles with bolt-on steering arms, a hand-welded crossmember and control arms, rack-and-pinion steering, and QA1 coilover shocks.
The interior has stock overall look and feel, but is significantly upgraded with AutoMeter gauges, a Hurst shifter, leather covered Corbeau seats, RCI Racing harness, and a 15-inch Moto-Lita steering wheel.

10 Forgotten Muscle Cars That Deserve to Be Restored
by James Derek Sapienza
Source: General Motors We all know the story; it started in 1964 with the Ford Mustang. No, wait — I mean the Plymouth Barracuda. Or the Pontiac GTO. Or was it earlier with the Pontiac Catalina SD? The ’50s Dodge D-500 maybe? Debating the origin of the muscle car is like debating over the first rock and roll record; everyone you talk to has a different opinion, and no one is exactly wrong. Let’s just say that by the early ’60s, a generation coming of age fell in love with high-performance midsize cars coming out of Detroit, and for a few brief years, performance ruled the day. Naturally, the good old days seem to look better with each passing year, and as the book was written on the muscle car, a fair amount of contenders fell by the wayside.
Tumblr media
1. 1964 Studebaker Avanti R3
Source: Auctions America The Avanti isn’t generally counted among muscle cars, but then, Studebaker was never exactly considered a performance powerhouse to begin with. But the fiberglass Avanti had a long hood, short rear deck, and 289-cubic-inch V8 a full two years before the Ford Mustang did. In 1964 (after production officially ended), Studebaker bored out nine V8s to 304 cubic inches, slapped a Paxton supercharger on them, and dropped them into remaining Avantis. The result was a 171-mile-per-hour rocket, which the company claimed made it the fastest production car in America. This R3 was sold by Auctions America in 2010 for $96,250. With the collector market being what it is today, good luck finding one this cheap ever again.
Tumblr media
2. 1965 Pontiac 2+2
Source: General Motors As far as classic muscle cars go, the ’65-’67 GTO is remembered to be about as big as they came. But with the success of the GTO, Pontiac wanted to take its go-fast formula to an even bigger car, which became the ’65-’67 2+2. Based on the full-size Catalina two-door, the 2+2 had its own unique 338-horsepower 421-cubic-inch V8, and in High Output guise, power jumped to 376 ponies, which when tuned right could rocket from zero to 60 in a mind-bending 3.9 seconds. Bigger, plusher, and often faster than its smaller stablemate, the 2+2 deserves a lot more love from speed freaks.
Tumblr media
3. 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone
Source: Ford For ’60s Ford products, the Mercury Comet was about as basic as they came. Closely based on the Ford Falcon, the ’64-’65 Comet could be livened up with Ford’s famous 289-cubic-inch V8. But for those who wanted more from their Mercurys, Ford built 50 Comet Cyclones for the dragstrip, complete with fiberglass hood, fenders, doors and front bumper, plexiglass windows, and the same 425-horsepower 427 V8 found in the Shelby Cobra. In ’66, Mercury introduced the production Comet GT with the 390 V8, and while they’re capable compact muscle cars, they couldn’t hope to match the insanity of their big block predecessor.
Tumblr media
4. 1968 Ford Ranchero 500
Source: Ford It’s been long overshadowed by Chevy’s iconic El Camino, but the Ford Ranchero was America’s first car-based Ute. And while Chevy was offering the 396 V8 in its muscle trucks, Ford upped the ante in ’68 and made its restyled Ranchero available with a 335-horsepower Cobra Jet 428 V8. Unfortunately, a lack of weight over the rear wheels made the hot Rancheros a handful to drive, so very few were built with Ford’s biggest motor. While it seems like every surviving El Camino happens to be an SS model, we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen a Cobra Jet Ranchero. Come to think of it, we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen any Ranchero.
Tumblr media
5. 1969 Chevy Kingswood 427
Source: General Motors Back in the ’60s, you could order virtually any option you wanted on a car, and companies would actually build it for you. So imagine you’ve got a growing family, and your Corvette just can’t handle them. What to do? Buy a Chevy Kingswood station wagon with Rally wheels, hideaway headlights, seating for seven, and the same 390-horsepower V8 found in your ‘Vette. Only 546 buyers opted for the big V8 in ’69, but a number of 427 Kingswoods spent the next decade making their mark on the drag strip.
Tumblr media
6. 1969 Oldsmobile Rallye 350
Source: General Motors When gearheads think of outrageous muscle cars from 1969, the Pontiac GTO Judge easily sits at the top of the list. But while the Judge has gone on to become a legend, Oldsmobile’s analog, the Rallye 350, is all but forgotten. Like the Judge (at least at first) it was offered in one outrageous color (Sebring Yellow), had color-matched wheels and bumpers, a spoiler, and a fiberglass hood. And compared to Olds’s top-dog 442, the car’s 310-horsepower 350-cubic-inch V8 made it significantly lighter, allowing it to scramble from zero to 60 in seven seconds and run the quarter mile in a respectable 15.27 seconds at 97 miles per hour. Just 3,500 Rallye 350s were built, making it one of the more obscure muscle cars to ever come from GM.
Tumblr media
7. 1969 Ford Torino Talladega
Source: Ford Half a century on, the Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird and Dodge Daytona get all the love when it comes to NASCAR homologation specials. But in 1969, Ford tried its hand at aerodynamics too and built the Torino Talladega. Starting with a Torino Sportsroof, Ford worked with the Holman-Moody race shop to design a sleeker, longer front clip and rear fascia for the car. The Talladega was honed in the wind tunnel — a relative novelty for the era — and powered by the 429-cubic-inch V8 found in the Boss Mustang. Production was over by March; Ford only built 754 of them and they were barely advertised, but the slippery cars dominated during the ’69 season, winning 29 races. In 1970, however, the 200-mile-per-hour Superbird ruled NASCAR, and the Talladega’s time in the spotlight was over. Today, the Talladega (and near-identical Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II) are bargains on the collector market compared to the beak-nosed Mopars.
Tumblr media
8. 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ
Source: General Motors The second-generation Grand Prix is largely remembered for its role in popularizing the Personal Luxury Coupe segment, but in its early days, it was one of the hottest cars on the street. With a long hood (the longest hood of any production car in ’69, in fact) and short deck, the Grand Prix was available with Pontiac’s 390-horsepower 428-cubic-inch V8, allowing it to scramble from zero to 60 in 6.5 seconds and run the quarter mile in 15 seconds at 97 miles per hour. Its combination of luxury and power made it the Grand Prix massive hit for Pontiac; within a few years, any semblance of performance would be gone.
Tumblr media
9. 1970 Chrysler Hurst 300
Source: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles As early as 1970, Chrysler die-hards were feeling nostalgic for the 300-letter series, which ended in 1965. The 300-series carried on, but performance had taken a back seat as mid-sized muscle cars had picked up the go-fast mantle. Chrysler tried to recapture the magic for ’70 by outfitting a 300 coupe with the interior from an Imperial, a fiberglass hood and decklid, a 375-horsepower 440-cubic-inch V8, and a Torque-Flite automatic to handle all that power. At 18.5 feet long and 4,400 pounds, the big Chrysler could still make zero to 60 in 7.1 seconds and run the quarter mile in 15.3 seconds. With just 500 built, the Hurst 300s rank as one of the rarest Mopar muscle cars of all time.
Tumblr media
10. 1971 AMC SC/360 Hornet
Source: Chris Andrews Productions via YouTube In the ’60s, AMC’s red, white, and blue Rebel Machine and SC/Rambler muscle cars failed to move the sales needle for America’s last independent automaker, but they sure caused a scene wherever they went. For 1970, the company had introduced the compact Hornet and Gremlin to replace the Rambler, and with them came the SC/360 Hornet. With an available 285-horsepower 360-cubic-inch V8 under the hood, the small Hornet could hit 60 from a standstill in 6.7 seconds, and run the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds at 97 miles per hour. But in 1970, displacement still ruled the day, and despite being cheaper than a Plymouth Duster 340, AMC found just 784 buyers for its smallest muscle car. We think it’s aged remarkably well, and would love to take one of these ’70s-era sleepers to the drag strip.

When I first compiled this list, it was really for my own benefit so I could have a quick reference to all of the major American muscle cars produced between the mid-60s and mid-70s. Basically, the most popular makes and years for that golden age of high displacement muscle machines. Now it’ s time to pass it on to you good folks, so you have a quick reference to start to see the most popular muscle cars at a glance. Now, I know there will be a couple of exceptions here and there missing, so if you see any that are not included, please comment below so that we can add them and make the best list on the net of all things muscle car. Top 8 Ford Muscle Cars That You Should Know About
Tumblr media
Ford muscle cars had been once some of the best of the muscle vehicle era.
In the 1960’ s, Ford basically ruled racetracks across the world. But in the streets associated with muscle car wars, Ford had been still playing catch-up even with the particular Mustang. It wasn’ t till Ford’ s 1968 428 Cobra Jet, that gave Ford muscles cars were given serious street cred. If you’ lso are considering a muscle car, or perhaps want to learn more about these majestic automobiles keep reading. We got you covered with all the info you’ d ever want to know concerning the top Ford muscle cars that will defined a generation.
1 . One of The Best Ford Muscle mass Cars: 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E This is probably the most overlooked performance cars from late 1960s. The 1968 Cougar GT-E, is among the rarest cars and is incredibly precious today, and we can see why. If the Road Runner has been at the top of bare-bones performance, then the Cougar GT-E would represent the other side from the muscle car spectrum with a cost that reflects that. You do not wish to overlook this powerhouse of a vehicle. A GT-E package deal would cost the buyer $1, 311 alone, which is almost half of the cost of an entire 383-powered Road Runner, whenever this car debuted in 1967. When the Cougar first showed in 1967, Motor Trend named it Car from the Year. Which came as a surprise, as many would assume that title would certainly go to the more gussied up Mustang. These two cars do have the same motor.
2 . late 1960s Ford Fairlane Torino GT It’ s simply no shock that the late 1960’ ersus inspired a rise of budget muscle mass cars that spread like wildfire. After the Road Runner’ s achievement, every other muscle car manufacturer ran to get their cars on the roads ASAP. Ford failed to want to miss out and redesigned the particular Fairline Torino in 1968 using a Mustang like fastback that efficient this car for NASCAR’ t speedways. This car’ s brand new shape came in a variety of engine, 289, 302, and also 390. So Ford built 600 of those hardtops with a 428 Cobra Plane and C6 automatics. 193 of such cars come with a 3. 91 back axle ratio. The car itself doesn’ t come with much decoration, merely a badge on its front fender.
3. 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator The turning point for the Kia Mercury Cougar happened in 1969 with the Mercury Cougar Eliminator. This particular car isn’ t totally Mustang’ s cousin, as it comes from Ford’ s slightly more upscale division that will came into its own this year. This vehicle not only has a convertible, but also a good Eliminator option giving this Cougar some fangs. This particular car is longer, wider, plus heavier than the 1968 version. The particular 1969 car has the same 111-inch wheelbase wit three more in . than the Mustang, which gives the Cougar more legroom. This particular vehicle’ s body has a various style than the Ford pony, using a sharp crease on the flanks from your nose to each side, This particular design ends just at the edge of the trunk wheel arches, which is not very much different of a design from the way the Buick Skylark stood out from the Chevy Chevelle. Similar to the Mustang, the Mercury Cougar had an upgrade in 1969, gaining 3. five inches in length, and 3 ins of width. The Cougar Eliminator has a stripe down its flanks, sporting the word Eliminator with a significant rear wing like Mustangs along with a hood scoop
4. 1969 Ford Talladega This car is definitely on its own mission. Ford was viewing the taillights of faster vehicles like Mopar and GM muscle tissue rivals in the 1960s and earlier 1970s. This car was called after NASCAR’ s newest superspeedway, Talladega. The 1969 Ford Talladega was Ford’ ersus answer to Dodge’ s Charger five hundred, so Ford built the street edition of this car so it could be eligible for a racing. This car is similar to the particular Mercury Cyclone Spoiler. For this car to be eligible to competition, NASCAR only required Ford to construct 500 units. Instead, Ford constructed 736 all with a C6 automated, 428 CJ and a column shifter. To make the Talladega, Ford had to lengthen the Torino’s front ends simply by 15. 5 inches, also incorporating a 30-degree slant and a billet grille that’ s flush-mounted. Ford then modified the rear fender with a V-shape and mounted this, altering the rocker panels therefore the car would have an aerodynamic advantage. This design also staggered the trunk shocks. The design includes a few emblems of T over the fake gas cap in the heart of the tail and door holders. This vehicle comes in three colours, but all have black hats.
5. 1970 Ford Torino Cobra The Torino was the followup to Ford’ s speedway megastars. While the 1968 and 1969 fastback Torino might not have done well at the racetrack, at a Ford car dealership , this redesigned car leaped 52 percent in sales. Managed speed even named this series the “ Car of the Year. ” This new model was obviously a little fragmented with a bolder appearance complete with a dozen various trim ranges, many that were considered to be new. Nevertheless , these resign really grabbed the interest of automotive media, making this vehicle appeal to America’ s high-performance arranged. The Ford Torino Cobra also has strong mechanical GENETICS, making it the choice of several 429 big-blocks with Wide Oval wheels, four manual gates, Competition Suspension system, and a massive air scoop along with 429CJ Ram Air. This car also has a blacked out hood and grille, creating this car the very height of within this factory-fast time period. This car can be purchased in a range of comfort options, giving the driving force a level of personalization with this vehicle. The 1970 Torino is still a fastback, it simply has the style and attitude to consider Road Runners and Chevy Chevelles. The Torino Cobra comes with 3 brand new 429 cubic-inch engines.
6. 1973 Kia Falcon XB GT Falcons were barely brand new in Australia in 1975. Since 1960 Ford offered a series of Falcons, using the twin being the Falcon 4 doors sedans that were sold in America. Since 1962, there were some Austrailain market changes in style that were made in 1964. Ford associated with Australia started building its own personal auto-bodies under the Falcon name. It was the 1965 Falcon XP that was a make it or even break it car for Kia. This car ended paying off in order to was put head to head with its nemesis on the Australian market, The Holden. You might recognize the particular 1973 Ford Falcon XB GRAND TOURING as the car Mad Max went, and you’ d be correct. But that’ s not the reason why this legendary Australian car can be on our list. It’ s due to this third-generation Falcon is legendary within performance for many reasons. Not only does this car appearance awesome, but it’ s the cross between the 1970 Torino Cobra and the 1973 Mustang Fastback. This particular car isn’ t much different compared to it’ s a generation just before, but it does have a new front end plus a twin-scoop hood like a Mustang. This car was designed for gearheads, as it has a standard 351 Cleveland with 300 hp plus a 380-pound torque. This is because of the insufficient emission standards that were around whenever this car was made. These types of standards have since killed many performance cars in the United States. The 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT is four-speed, with a nine-inch rear end that is fitted with high gears.
seven. Shelby Mustangs The Shelby Mustang is a version of the Ford Mustang that has increased performance value. This car had been built by Shelby American from your years 1965 to 1968. Type 1969 to 1970, this vehicle was then built by Kia. After the 2005 intro of the fifth generation Ford Mustang, the Shelby was revived as being a newer high-performance model, only on this occasion it was built and designed by Ford. The famous 1965 Mustang Shelby GT 350, is a severe performance machine. Some buyers experienced this car was too severe, so the next year the car replaced functions like the fiberglass hood, adjustable Koni shocks, side-exit exhaust, and Of detroit Locker rear diff were possibly removed, replaced, or just made optionally available. There was even a Paxton supercharger option in the 1966 style. The GT 350s were perfect for the track. Later the GRAND TOURING 500s were ideal for drag race, as they were fitted with a 428 big-block. 1967 plus 1968 Shelbys were able to go on lower 14 second runs of one fourth miles. There was also an even quicker KR model made as well.
8. 1999 Kia F-150 SVT Lightning The 1999 Ford F-150 SVT Lighting, looks a lot distinct from these other muscle cars described, but don’ t let the appearance fool you. This vehicle can be drag raced at thirteen. 62 seconds at 101. sixteen mph, making this the faster trip of these muscle cars, which is amazing for a 4670-pound two-wheel pick-up pickup truck. This car could be the second generation of the SVT Super. You’ ll see under the hood that there are hot rod high sides. There’ s also a high performance 5. 4-liter single overhead v-8 cam with a boost of 8 pounds and 360 hp manufacturer rating with 440 lb-ft rpm. These trucks utilize a four-speed automatic transmission, a line shifter, and 18 inches, 295mm wide tires. This truck expenses about $30, 000, from 99 to 2004 more than 28, 1000 of these trucks were made.
