Petals danced around you as you walked under the blooming cherry blossom trees with Peach Blossom Cookie firmly clinging to your arm. You could feel his hands massaging your muscles lightly.

"Your arms are so strong, Y/N Cookie~" He giggled. "But you feel a bit tense, is something the matter?" Peach Blossom Cookie asked innocently. You avoided his eyes with a bit of a pout. He always teased you like this.

"I'm fine," you replied quietly. "Are we almost there?" You quickly changed the subject, sensing that something was off. It made you a bit bashful since Peach Blossom Cookie was noticeably more affectionate than usual. He was a caring and warm Cookie in general, but when he was alone with you his attention became more... intimate.

"Almost~" Peach Blossom Cookie giggled. "It's such a beautiful spot, perfect for a picnic, so I had to take you here." He smiled warmly. Your heart quickened, though you tried to urge it not to at the sight of his lovely smile.

Peach Blossom Cookie pulled out a large blanket from the wicker basket he was carrying. Even though you offered to help him carry the supplies, he insisted on doing it himself and even shooed you away when you tried to assist with setting up the picnic. Peach Blossom Cookie happily prepared the picnic spread, taking great care to ensure everything was perfect and in its place. You didn't understand his commitment to detail for a simple, casual picnic but a part of you appreciated him going through the trouble for you.

Once it was finally ready, Peach Blossom Cookie gestured for you to come sit beside him, patting the blanket with a cute smile on his face. You did as requested, but you were a little hesitant. You tried not to let your mind wander as you sat beside Peach Blossom Cookie, who looked so perfect against the pink falling petals.

Peach Blossom Cookie gingerly picked up one of the peach macarons and smiled.

"I made these for you, my dear. Please, try one," he said softly, his eyes sparkling with warmth. Peach Blossom Cookie offered the delicate macaron, but you found yourself leaning away slightly as he tried to feed it to you, overwhelmed by the tenderness of the action. Heat crept to your cheeks as you felt a flutter in your chest, caught between shyness and the allure of his affectionate gaze.

"You didn't have to go through all the trouble just for me." You muttered, quickly turning away so Peach Blossom Cookie didn't see the blush dusting your cheeks.

Peach Blossom Cookie was a great friend to you and he cared for you deeply. And you cared for him, albeit in your own aloof way. He would be overly affectionate sometimes, but you never really minded. Even now, as his hand remained firmly wrapped around yours, you couldn't help but feel a warm glow in your chest.

"You're my dear friend. Of course, I wanted to do this for you," he answered earnestly. His words gave you a fluttery feeling in your stomach, and you raced to stuff down the feeling as quickly as possible.

"Still... it's very thoughtful of you," you said quietly. You gently placed your free hand over his and gave it a gentle squeeze. "Thank you," you mumbled, feeling slightly embarrassed. Peach Blossom Cookie's face brightened, clearly pleased with your gratitude. He playfully pressed the dessert lightly against your lips.

"Now say 'ahh'~!" Peach Blossom Cookie laughed. This time, you accepted it with a small smile. He waited patiently as you chewed thoughtfully. The crispy, but still soft cookie mixed with the feather-light cream in the middle surrounded a center of sweet peach jam. It was clear that Peach Blossom Cookie had put in a lot of care when making these sweets for you.

"It's really good." You praised. Peach Blossom Cookie beamed at your praise and released his grip on your hand so he could reach out and cup your cheek, brushing a stray crumb or two from the corner of your mouth with his thumb. You felt your heart suddenly jump in your chest as Peach Blossom Cookie leaned forward slightly, his soft face inches away from yours.

"I'm so happy you like them." He whispered softly, his pale dough painted with a bright blush. You felt your whole body tingle beneath his touch.

"Y/N Cookie... there's another reason why I brought you out for a picnic." Peach Blossom Cookie admitted. You stared into his eyes, completely mesmerized. Swallowing thickly, you knew where this was going, and just the thought made your stomach twist with a flurry of butterflies. Peach Blossom Cookie's eyes flickered briefly to your parted lips.

"You mean so much to me, and I realized, that I'm in love with you, Y/N Cookie." He confessed.

You froze as the words sunk in. Love. Peach Blossom Cookie loved you? Your mind was a whirl of thoughts. How long had Peach Blossom had these feelings for you?

It almost didn't seem real, like he was simply teasing you like he had always done. But there was no mistaking his words and they rang true throughout your entire being, making your heart skip a beat.

Before you could even think of a response, Peach Blossom Cookie cupped your face with his hands, and closed the distance between your lips. He kissed you, softly and tentatively as if testing the waters before eagerly deepening the kiss as if he could no longer hold himself back. Your mind went blank, and the only thing you could think of was that you wanted to kiss him back.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Eddie cursed over and over again. He just needed to take a quick piss. He was supposed to just be in and out, but nope.

Motherfucking Seth Davies cornered him in the stall.

“There you are, pretty boy,” Seth purred. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere.” He stroked Eddie’s cheek, but when Eddie flinched away, Seth grabbed his face roughly. “I told you, you are mine. No one else’s.”

Eddie pushed him, but he barely even budged. “Get out of here. You aren’t supposed to be here.”

Seth chuckled darkly. “You see that’s where you’re wrong, princess,” he sneered, pressing their bodies together. “You see this club is exactly five hundred feet from Nightmare Holes. I’ve been coming here for longer than that usurper has.”

Eddie felt a cold sense of dread shudder down his spine. Shit.

“Imagine my surprise when you showed up with the usurper and the little bird with all your little bandmates,” Seth continued. “I knew it was a sign that you were meant to be mine again.”

Eddie tried to push him again. “I’m not anyone’s. I’m not even seeing anyone right now.”

As much as it hurt to say that, it was true. Steve and he hadn’t even gone out on a date yet. Mostly they had hung out, usually with other people there or they were at his tattoo parlor working on the tattoo.

“And it’s going to stay that way, won’t it, peach?” Seth growled.

“Eddie?” Steve called out.

Eddie went to call out, but Seth put his hand over his mouth to silence him.

“Eddie?” Steve called again.

Eddie bit down on Seth’s hand causing him to scream, but he didn’t budge from Eddie’s mouth.

Steve’s eyes narrowed at the stall the cry had come from.

“Hey, just me and the boyfriend having a little fun,” Seth called out. “So if you could give us a minute.”

The door opened and closed and Eddie closed his eyes, tears falling. He couldn’t believe Steve had fallen for that.

Suddenly the door to stall banged down to the ground without its hinges and then was slammed aside. Seth was being pulled off of him and thrown into the basin of the sink.

“What the fuck?” Seth growled, abruptly face to face to the avenging fury of Steve Harrington.

“I told you at Hop’s,” Steve growled, “that you picked the wrong man to target.”

Seth scoffed. “I didn’t think some skinny ass prep could take me.”

Steve shook his head. “I meant Eddie. I would anything to protect him and you are so going to regret this.”

Seth took a swing at Steve, who side stepped it easily. Eddie got out of the stall and came to stand next to Steve.

“I don’t work out as much as I used to,” Steve said, with a raised eyebrow, “now that I’ve been running a tattoo shop full time, but I do enough to keep in shape.”

Steve loosened his shoulders and took a proper swing at Seth. He aimed straight for the guy’s nose. He smirked when he heard the crack.

“The fuck?” Seth screamed. “I think you broke my nose, you fucker!”

“I’m only going to tell you one more time,” Steve warned. “Either get the fuck out or get your ass kicked. Your choice.”

Seth spat out blood from his mouth. “If I can’t have him, no one can.” He pulled out a knife and lunged at Eddie.

Steve grabbed Seth’s extended wrist and twisted it hard. The knife dropped to the ground and Seth tripped over his own feet. He clutched his wrist, screaming as Steve kicked the knife behind him out of reach.

Seth got back to his feet, blood staining the white suit.

“Let it go, man,” Eddie pleaded. “Just walk away and move on with your life.”

“You think he’s going to be any better?” Seth sneered. “It’s all you’re good for slut. To spread your legs for the first pretty boy to bat his eyelashes at you. You deserve to be beaten into submission, because submission is all you’re good for.”

CRACK!

Suddenly Seth was on the floor cradling his jaw.

Steve looked over at Eddie appreciatively. “Wow, baby. That was a good hit.”

Eddie shook his hand. “Fuck, that’s going to sting like a bitch later.”

Seth stared up at Eddie as if he was seeing him for the first time.

Steve gently took his hand. “Let’s go to the bar and get them to call the police and get ice for both our hands.”

Eddie smiled up at Steve. “Sounds like a plan, sweetheart.”

Seth just continued to stare as if his whole world had been yanked out from under him.

“Actually,” Gareth said from the doorway. “I’ve been on with the police this whole time and I filmed it.”

Eddie and Steve turned slowly to see Gareth standing there, his phone in his hands and cheeky grin on his face.

Seth scrambled to stand up, but it was too late. There was knocking on the door with a gruff voice saying it was the police and to open up.

All three of them gave their statements while Seth tried to lie through his teeth that Eddie had sought him out and cornered him in the bathroom. Gareth just calmly showed the officer the video and one glare from the officer shut Seth up for good.

Gareth then pointed to the knife in the corner of the room. “And you can keep the cell phone, boys. I’m due for an upgrade anyway.”

It took barely a half hour and then they were back out with their friends with a story to tell. And ice for both Steve and Eddie’s hands, of course.

Wayne stayed another week to make sure that the DA didn’t do something stupid again. Thankfully, an election had happened since then and a new DA was in there. One that wasn’t so soft on domestic abuse, assault, and attempted murder then the last one was.

And with the video there was no doubt Seth was guilty of all of the above. Plus the judge ruled that the earlier case could be used in court as a pattern of behavior. When Seth’s lawyer got the word about that and that the video wouldn’t be thrown out, he caved.

Seth was forced to plead guilty to all charges and would go away for ten years without the possibility of parole. When faced with the alternative of going to jail for at least twenty years on the attempted murder charge alone, he took the deal.

This is time Eddie was informed of the deal and agreed as long as the cops actually enforced the protection order this time.

As Wayne was getting ready to go back to Hawkins, he stopped by Royal Pain to say goodbye to Steve.

“Steve! Your future uncle-in-law is here!!!” Robin called out.

Steve came running out of the back where he was watching Argyle and Chrissy tattoo the same picture to see who could copy the style the easiest.

“Robin!” he hissed at her as came up to Wayne. “Sorry about her. She’s been calling for wedding bells since day one.”

Wayne chuckled. “That’s alright. But have you got a few minutes. I’d like to take you out to lunch.”

Steve turned to Robin. “When is my next appointment?”

She pulled up the schedule on the computer. “You have a little over an hour.”

He turned back to Wayne. “Is there some place you had in mind or are you up for suggestions?”

Wayne grinned. “Whacha got?”

Steve laughed. “Oh so many...”

“I wanted to thank you for taking care of my boy,” Wayne said once they had ordered at a good sandwich place and were waiting for their food.

Steve blushed. “I’m just grateful I got to him before Seth did any real damage.”

Wayne scoffed. “I think he did plenty.”

Steve nodded, grabbing a hold of this water glass and rubbing the condensation off with his thumb. “Without a doubt, but he threatened to kill Eddie and who knows what his full plan was.” He fought off the shiver that went down his spine at the thought. “I think Eddie will recover from this, not so much if Seth had actually done something.”

Wayne nodded. “I get what you’re saying now. You’re right. So count me as even more grateful than before.”

He rubbed the scruff on hsi chin thoughtfully. “Why didn’t you try and break down the stall door?”

Steve’s head jerked up in surprised. “The hinges were on the outside because it opened toward the sinks instead of inward. Trying to bust it down would have only made things worse.”

Wayne huffed out a laugh. “So you just what? Removed the screws?”

Steve blushed, ducking his head. “Something like that, yeah.”

“I know you two are going slow,” he said, ���and I appreciate you letting him go his own speed, but boy, you’ve got to kiss him!”

Steve sputtered. “What now?”

“Look,” Wayne said, leaning forward on the table, “I love my nephew with all my heart, but that boy has a tendency to get lost in his head. And don’t think I didn’t notice you wearing that necklace.”

Steve rubbed the pick around his neck fondly. “I know what it means, him giving this to me. He told me. Not right away, but I know that he gave it to me because he feels the same way about me that I do about him.”

“You in love with Eddie, son?” Wayne asked gently.

Steve pursed his lips and nodded. “Yeah. I really do. But I’m okay going this speed because he’s not the only with hang ups. I had a really bad relationship a few years back that is still effecting everything I do when it comes to relationships. I had a bad tattooing experience where someone tried to sue me and that left me in pieces, too.”

Wayne nodded back. “All right, I can’t say I understand, but you seem to have a good head on your shoulders and I’ve said my piece.” He held up his hands in surrender.

They chatted amicably about their favorite sports teams and Eddie as they ate their lunch.

Wayne paid and they walked out on to the pavement. Wayne called Eddie to pick him up and they continued to chat while they waited.

“Oh come...” Steve said, “you can’t believe they have the team to win it this yea–”

He was spun around and was face to face with the last person on earth he ever expected to see. And really at this point after his dad in his shop, Nancy at the grocery store, and Seth at Hop’s, he really, really should learn by now that the world loves to torment him.

“You absolute fucker!” the man snarled. “How dare you just walk around town like you didn’t ruin my life!”

Wayne immediately got between them. “There is no reason to go around harassing people on the street regardless of what they’ve done.”

The man looked Wayne up and down and scoffed, ignoring him. “I can’t get it covered! I can’t even get it removed because it covers too much of my back! You did this to me, you asshole!”

The man raised his fist to hit Steve, but someone tapped his shoulder. He turned around only to be punched in the nose.

“The fuck!” he screamed.

Steve cocked his head to the side. “Hey-ya, Eds!” he greeted warmly.

Wayne huffed out a laugh. “You always did have perfect timing, boy.”

“Everyone meet Quinn Colburn,” Steve said dryly. “the asshole who kept trying to sue me over a tattoo I did for him. The one the courts kept denying over and over again.”

Eddie grinned. “Ooh...can I hit him again, then?”

Wayne and Steve laughed as Quinn stood there holding his nose.

Quinn spotted Eddie’s tattoos. “I hope you don’t go to this asshole for your tattoos, he’ll fuck up your life.”

Eddie laughed. “Too late, man. I love them!” He pulled off his shirt right there on the street. He tapped his chest. “This was the first one he did for me and I fell in love with his style.”

Quinn’s eyes bulged out his head. “But that’s a small one! He does shit at large tattoos. I even heard that he won’t do them anymore. I wish he had decided to do that before he fucked up mine!”

Eddie turned around slowly. The sword was done, complete with the words scratched out, and most of the right wing was done. “He’s not done yet, but god, I wouldn’t let anyone else touch me after this. He’s my only tattoo artist from now on.”

But that one served to make Quinn angrier. “So what? You can do your friends’ tattoos just fine, but when it comes to strangers, you can’t be assed to do it right?”

“Show them,” Steve bit out. “Go ahead. You think it’s shit, but I never did. Go ahead, show them!”

Quinn turned around and showed Eddie and Wayne his tattoo.

“Wow, babe,” Eddie marveled. “It’s a bit anime, but holy shit that’s wicked cool.”

“You drew that, Stevie?” Wayne asked.

Steve nodded.

“You are very talented man,” Wayne said, with a smile.

Quinn whirled around to face them. “You’re all morons if you think that was good.”

Eddie and Wayne looked at each and shrugged.

“You had your chance to stop him at anytime and didn’t,” Eddie pointed out. “That’s no one’s fault but yours. You can either continue to be bitter or you can move on with your life knowing you have a kick ass tattoo from a kick ass artist. Up to you, man.”

Quinn threw his arms up in the air and stalked off.

Steve turned to Eddie with absolute heart-eyes. “I know it’s not even the same realm as what happened last week, but that’s the second time you’ve come to my rescue. Thank you.”

Eddie blushed. “I couldn’t stand there and let that man continue to harass you.”

“God I love you,” Steve breathed. His eyes went wide when he realized what he’d said.

Eddie grinned. “Right back atcha, big boy.”

Steve blushed a deep red. Eddie grabbed his cheeks and pulled him in for a searing kiss.

He wasn’t sure how long they kissed, but Wayne had to clear his throat a few times to get their attention.

“As happy as I am for you both,” he said with a fond, lop-sided smile, “it is summer out here, and I would really, really like to get out of the heat before I become Kentucky Fried Wayne, please.”

Steve laughed. “I’ll see you tomorrow at the shop?” he whispered into Eddie’s space.

Eddie nodded. “Yeah, baby. I’ll be there.”

Steve watched as Eddie and Wayne walked to Eddie’s van, a goofy grin on his face.

Finally saw Furiosa in theaters & we have Opinons.

Hello Homer. Welcome to The Iliad and The Odyssey. While that conflict starts with an apple, this conflict begins with a peach. Both are catalysts for a decades long saga culminating redemption and the restoration of self. Obviously the plot points are not one for one and Max & Furiosa both take the role of Odysseus at different times in the story. (if anyone reads this, please be kind it's been a hot minute since i read either the Iliad or the Odyssey and i'm going off memory here and it might be intertwined with Troy: Fall of a City which is not quiteee faithful to the source material but i've also seen it an unhinged number of times.) Oral Tradition: The History Men are stand ins for "Homer" or the many storytellers whose tales we attribute to Homer. With the fall of civilization, knowledge and stories are shared by the History Men much like the traveling storytellers of the pre-modern world. George Miller has said Max could be seen as a mythological figure, which tracks with the narration by the History Men as Homeric stand ins.

Random Greco-Roman References: Praetorians, Imperators, Scrotus' attire, the relief sculptures on Jack's War Rig, Cheedo being told to "Wring your hands and tear your hair" in the ancient greek style of grieving. Fruit as the Catalyst: Apple vs Peach. The Trojan War begins with an apple. Discord is pissed she doesn’t get invited to a wedding. Paris chooses Aphrodite, Aphrodite promises Helen who isn’t actually available and Chaos Ensues. Furiosa takes the peach, not outrightly forbidden to eat, but far from the safety zone. Both instances are the catalysts that start their respective conflicts. Furiosa also evokes the imagery of Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Siege: Like the Achaeans, Dementus is unable to capture any stronghold in the Wasteland without trickery. The actual Trojan Horse: capturing the War Rig and disguising his men as War Boys to gain entrance into Gas Town, otherwise impenetrable. Fury Road has that Trojan Horse as well, with Max taking on the role of Odysseus suggesting the group return to the Citadel with the War Rig. Forgetting yourself & Hidden Identity: Odysseus' men eat the lotus flowers and forget their desire to return home. Max has suppressed his identity and lost himself to the ghosts of the wasteland. He hardly knows what is real and what is not. Odysseus washes up on shore and does not reveal his name at several points in the story. Seems he learned his lesson with Polyphemus and does not reveal himself without caution, especially upon his return to Ithaca. Max does not share his name with Furiosa until the very end of the story. ("What's your name, What do I call you?" "Does it matter?") Max is haunted by the ghosts of his past, by those he could not save & the mistakes he made. Max has wandered the Wasteland alone for so long, he has lost sense of himself. He is feral, "reduced to a single instinct, survive." A Long Journey: The Odyssey is a 10 year long journey home from a 10 year war; Odysseus has been away from Ithaca for 20 years at the end of the Odyssey. Albeit Odysseus fucks around A LOT, some is his fault some isn't. Furiosa states she's been away for 7,000 days plus the ones she forgot to count. (19+ years.) Max has been wandering since 1979/1980. Coming Home: In the end Furiosa, like Odysseus, fights for her home, even though in her case it wasn’t the home she longed for. Max, coming back to a sense of self, helps Furiosa & the Wives fight for a home to come back to. Odysseus & Telemachus fought to rid Ithaca of the suitors; Max & Furiosa fight for The Citadel, to free it from Imortan Joe. Praetorian Jack as a stand in for Hector of Troy: Hector was the pride of Troy, it's greatest warrior. Jack is the best driver to run the Fury Road. Revered by their respective cities, these warriors are both slain in battle. Jack's death scene is a clear allusion to Achilles desecrating the body of Hector after Hector's defeat. Achilles drags Hector's body behind his chariot while Hector's widow Andromache watches from the walls of Troy. I would argue the relationship between Furiosa and Jack is romantic, specifically due to his death scene. You have Jack's body dragged by the motorbikes with Furiosa, taking on the role of Andromache, forced to watch. (I also can't hear without my subtitles, but when they are about to be executed and she touches his chest and he touches her face, I s2g she says "Jack, my Jack." which has nothing to do with the Trojan War, but is absolutely implying a romantic relationship. You will not be able to convince me those two didn't bang after he stitched her up in the grotto. Please.)

Really hope the next Mad Max takes on a different ancient Saga. Here's hoping for Mad Max with Beowulf vibes.

Preface:

My zombies are not dead, they are infected with a disease which makes them hungry, they are not decomposing or mindless, they are driven insane by the pain of hunger and the things they’ve done so in a sense they die. They are loosely based on a book called ashes by Ilsa J. Bick, a very good angsty zombie book with very little romance.

This fic is set in the north west of England, to make it plausible for the MC to stumble upon the 141. Being Scottish myself I would love to make the MC Scottish and move the fic to the highlands, but I want some feedback on that.

TW: Death of a friend/sister, skinny reader (she fattens up), a lot of gross descriptions of zombies and death, angst lots, smut in later chapters.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from living 6 years in a zombie apocalypse it’s “waste not, want not.” That was the thought that kept me from gagging at the smell of the jacket that I shook rotten skin off of. Rising I looked down at the skinny, pale ‘woman’ I’d pried it from. had she done the same? How many people have died in this jacket? Would I die in the cold, spend years wandering, Killing others, feeling a deep painful unending hunger?

I looked down at her failing body, before the fall of humanity these jeans would have been 2 sizes too small, the shirt about 3 or 4. I’d lost all shape, hadn’t had a period in years, my skin looked a shade darker thanks to the many layers of dirt that clung to me. I once took pride in my appearance, now my crowning achievement was surviving for this long by myself.

Taking one last sweep of the shop I found a grey eyed boy, looked about 19, his cheeks sagged and the bags under his eyes were bulging, purply red. His pale cheeks were littered with peach fuzz and tear stained, his nose a pudgy red from his quiet sobs. He groaned in pain as he pulled a skinny rat apart, sucking on the small bones. He looked up at me from his crouched position and growled, his primitive brain deciding if he should run with his meal or if he could take me. He twitched his way to his feet dropping the rat at his feet.

Before his skinny legs could take him to me I’d pulled the gun from my waistband and shot a few small holes through his chest. He let out some muffled whimpers as he crumpled to the floor, I followed him to the floor. I had grown to feel very little but when they looked so young it hurt. I stroked his thinning hair and shushed him whilst he hacked up blood and shook.

The trek back to base was long but quiet, the marshy ground of the north west sucked my feet deep into the ground, the ‘suctiony’ sound that emitted from dragging my feet drowned out my own thoughts. As the base came into view my steps hurried, eager to get inside, it was tuesday (possibly) which meant it was my allotted bath day, due to the difficulty of moving the water from the various rain collectors and the calories it cost, I allowed myself a bath every two weeks. 

The hard metal door bit at my reddening fingers as I fumbled with the keys, reminding me I needed to organise them somehow. I huffed at the effort it took to pull the second interior door open and closed, it had been ripped off its hinges and now scratched across the cold linoleum as I dragged it about. When I finally got inside I relocked every door I walked through to get to the innermost rooms of the base. Whilst people were rare- some zombies in the early stages retained the ability to open and close doors. 

I went to the woodburner and warmed the deer from the outdoor freezer. Most livestock like cattle and sheep were almost hunted to extinction by the zombies but some animals like deer and rabbits remained too fast for zombies. But not me and my gun. I cooked the whole leg, I’d refreeze the tougher bits and keep them for on the go.

Whilst the deer cooked I used my pot to boil some water for my bath. It was more of a sponge bath really, getting fully naked and into a slippery tub was inviting trouble. I used some watered down fairy liquid and an old PT (psychical training, yeah I did cadets so I’m qualified to tell you all about it) shirt to scrub at my skin, one limb at a time.

I pulled one leg out of my jeans leaving the boot and jeans scrunched so I could haul them back up if I needed to. And it was a good thing I did as I was picking dirt out of my scabby skinned knee, I heard a scrapping. My blood ran cold and I almost wept at the sound. 

Scrambling to put my jeans and boots back on. With each creak of a door opening and closing and the low raspy voices of men my hands shook more. 

And when I heard the noise that I knew to be the particularly squeezy door to the room I’d claimed as my own, I almost turned the gun on myself. There were at least 2 men and they knew there was a woman living here.

Steeling myself and setting my footing I readied myself in the middle of the room, no hiding the only power I have is I am pointing my gun at the single door to this room.

The kitchen door moved to open easily and a silhouetted figure pulled every shadow from the room and they pooled at this man's feet, he stood easily a foot taller than myself. The imposing figure took up almost the entire doorway. Although there were no shadows, it was only him, he dressed all in black, tactical gear and a dark balaclava covered his entire being. This man may be death itself.

“Fuck off.” A man wriggled around ‘death’ “Nae way!” barreling towards me a man not as tall as ‘Death’ but just as large wrapped strong arms around me.

My plans crumbled and I lost any ability to remain calm or strong were lost to me. “Please! Please there are guns, ammo, food! If you leave me alone I- I’ll tell you where” the words were choked out of me and my sweaty hands shook looking for my gun. 

The man pulled back but I couldn’t see through the tears that blinded me “It’s- It’s me Johnny” the voice and name were familiar. Strong hands snaked up my arms and held me at my shoulders “oh, darlin’ we’d never hurt you” he put a hand on my cheek and slowly brought my eyes to him. I almost gagged on my tears looking at him, my best friend's older brother, I looked at him and saw her. Alex, my other half, our whole lives attached at the hip, her death had hurt more than any of the rest. 

“Oh Johnny, I’m so sorry” his excitement at seeing me faded to the most hollow I’d ever seen a man. We sank to our knees together, forgetting the man in the doorway. I pushed our brows together “It was quick, I did it” I whispered to him, as I saw the small tears slip down his cheek.

Halliel sat down on the bench in front of the harbour, coffee cup in one hand and pastry bag tucked into her pocket.

The sun was shining. It hadn't stopped shining since she'd arrived in Shutora with all her belongings in tow, four days ago.

It was out over the sea, climbing to be overhead. The tide was in.

On the far side of the harbour there was a ferry, passengers still exiting.

Halliel ignored them, ignored the town at her back. Eyes on the horizon beyond the harbour, where the sea became one with the sky. "I'm all moved," she murmured. "And everyone's gone. This is it."

A new start, she'd reasoned. Fewer memories to trip over out here, but still close enough that everyone could visit.

Clarice had made it sound like she would be over all too frequently.

An angelic with soft, brown-grey wings cupped loosely to their back bounced up from the boats docked in the harbour in an almost familiar gait, a bag swinging from one hand. They paused, turned, holding a hand to shade their face to look around, even though they wore sunglasses.

Halliel looked away before their eyes met.

"Hey! Could I trouble you for some directions?"

Halliel held back her sigh as the angelic looked down to catch their bag before it slipped entirely from their grasp. "Maybe. I only know a little of the area."

"That's alright." The angelic grinned, closing their eyes as they pushed their sunglasses up onto their forehead, into their tousled soft peach hair. "I don't need anything precise." They met Halliel's gaze.

Halliel sucked in a breath, almost crushing the coffee cup in her grip.

They'd never been able to change their eyes.

"Syn?"

They tilted their head. "Who…?"

"Sorry," Halliel replied. "For a moment, I thought…" She shook her head.

She'd seen the - the aftermath. Been at the funeral.

They wouldn't have left it, left her, this long if they'd… survived.

"It happens." They shrugged, swung their bag up onto their shoulder. "I'm Iden. You're new here as well?" They folded their wing around their bag to keep it in place, showing black dots on the tips of their longer feathers.

Halliel nodded.

"Oh, great! Maybe we could explore it all together? Harder to get lost when there's two of us, right?"

Halliel stood, causing Iden to take several steps back. "No, I don't - I have plans," she said, lying.

"Oh. Oh, that's fair enough." Iden blinked, face falling before they recovered, smiling. "Yes, alright."

"Sorry," Halliel said, automatic rather than heartfelt. "Maybe-" she cut herself off.

"Maybe," Iden agreed. "Enjoy your plans."

Halliel made some kind of reply before she strode off, picking a direction and definitely not fleeing the scene.
