Intro
Sleep Token are different, like super major big time different. Softly spoken pop aesthetic meets discordant percussive metal different. Different is great. It tests and pulls at the boundaries by which we choose to asses music by. All in all ST (sleep token) is very close to my heart in terms of what its intentions are and how it tries to achieve it. I worked very closely with ST on the song framing and ensuring that every phase of each song was being presented in the way they originally intended. Much like a prog record there isn’t any sense of an ABAB type repetition that’s common in pop music, instead it’s a textured journey down multiple avenues and pathways, showing and highlighting different perspectives of the song along the way. I could write about this project for some time but I’m very aware that this is supposed to be an engineering / mixing focused blog so I shall move on.
Tracking // Drums
In terms of the space, we ended up at Monnow valley. This happened to be my first ever solo flight session at MV, although nerve wrecking I think it came together rather harmoniously without any negative turns.
The initial outline from ST was to achieve as much as humanly possible without the need for rigid quantisation after the fact. Every play / part, had to emphasis what else was going on. Tricky, but great fun to achieve.
Tracking // Guitars & Bass
All tracked back here at G1, using an array of options like the Kemper, Axe fx and plugin amp sims. The attention wasn’t so much on ‘authentic amp sounds’ but more along the lines of ‘how cool can this sound, can it sound more cool?’ Quite a different approach considering some would be more enclined to try and ensure that ‘this does definitely sound like a 5150’ over what it actually does for the context that it is sitting within (the songs DNA)
** Cool bit, for the end part of TTN, the guitars were tracked 6 times. 3 different takes / tones each side. More tone, more drone.** – George
Bass, I think is a combination of my jazz bass and some software stuff, obviously my poor 4 string won’t handle going down to drop ZZZZ so that’s when the synth stuff needs to kick in, however I do believe at those parts the Jazz is playing the upper octave for that sense of movement and clank.
Tracking // Vocals
How freaking amazing is this dudes voice? Seriously? I used a different mic for each song, each time he sounds amazing. This is what it’s all about, right here. A great voice always sounds great. We used my modded Oktava m319 for one track, the AKG c414 b-uls for another and the sm7b on one more. Who cares what processing went on, just listen to how mega dope his voice is. Can you tell I appreciate his voice? Haha!

S.Q 🩵🎈🦕 ☇✑ The Sun (reversed), Seven of Cups (reversed), Five of Swords, King of Swords (reversed) (bonus card), Nine of Cups (reversed) (bottom of deck) ☇✑ 111, 333, 1313, 2323, life path 5, Aries/Virgo/Gemini/Cancer/Aquarius placements (rising, degrees, 1st/6th/3rd/4th/11th house, Venus, Mars, etc) "rescued"/escape, jade, bottle green, channeled song - The Dull Flame of Desire - Björk (feat. Anohni) ☇✑ the reversals may appear *scary* but HEAR ME OUT wait a damn minute (meme)- how interesting the images I picked, mostly kisses when I was searching (and then I picked the 3rd bc cute socks lol),- they'll be many moments of "renewal", framed like a film the two of you collaborated on to make... the colors blossoming like film developing,- both of you reaching into each other's heart- this will be emotionally mutual. not give and take- instead, both of you becoming ingrained in each other, weaving yourselves into the space around you- it's an intense experience... especially to your heart- I can feel it squeezing itself and beating deeply..and I'm hearing another song- Jóga by Björk ("-This state of, emergency, how beautiful to be - State of, emergency, is where I want to be") I feel this intensity may come as some sort of "relief". like one, or both of you, may have been made to be a ghost, a *stain* on the wall- this could have been due to bullying by peers/family... something about being in this big community and being on the outside of everyone (maybe you or this person experienced this exact scenario- I'm hearing during preschool, church, or maybe even a support group for "struggling"/troubled children...❤️) (*An Echo, a Stain* by Björk- I swear to you all of these songs aren't biased this is coming up naturally.. it's like being played through subway speakers- like her music got chosen as the film's soundtrack-) Good god ANYWAYS- WOO- ok, I want to get into who quote-on-quote (cus free will exists) "your" person is-... I know I already picked so many signs but he may be on the cusps of Capricorn in his placements (sidereal astrology?), or have Saturn placements... Nothing about this young man is inherently "bad", but there are areas (linking back to where his Capri/Saturn placements are) that are karmic, this may come from a family line- as I'm seeing darkness... but it's not- bad... its just shades of color, the shades of color he was brought into- harry potter mention (ik pls hear me out) but it's giving Slyterine energy. your person doesn't have a bad reputation, at all actually, but due to association of certain themes in his life, it would be "easy" to place judgments on him... yet there is something about his (outward?) appearance that- makes anyone who would be quick to judge, suddenly at ease around him. *for example*: maybe he was homeless, or in foster care in his early stages of life, and people may assume from that background that his personality is callus, avoidant, maybe even volatile... but he isn't- he's instead a little shy, caring, and altruistic- this is the type of guy who volunteers at emergency housing shelters -those are the characteristics I want you to look for, as you search through this world & keep an eye out for your person. you have to pay attention to the ones who transform their brokenness. ok- I have got to mention, the downtime you'll share with this person- is so "unique".. it's like you'll be sitting somewhere with people walking around you, and it's like everyone is in fast-forward/blurring, and you two are in this non-blurred bubble, just chilling. because yall own the time and space 🌌around you or whatever~ also this person is an artist of some kind, I'm hearing musicals like guitar/bass/piano/etc, and you'll inspire them a lot, and oh speaking of you'll both be really into certain fandoms- maybe not hp💀💀- but similar book taste is coming through, anime/series/movies, and music! I'm seeing concerts being a regular date for both of you (I'm hearing Ryn Weaver?)!! despite past experiences, I know both of you have built enough inner peace to keep growing~ together❤️.
*i hope this was helpful my darling ♡~ consider leaving a tip on my Patreon if you enjoyed, or follow and become a violet~ doesnt matter to me tho :>~ sending you on your wayyyy, bye bye!!*

Green Grove from the Saturn 3D Blast played on shuffle, and for a short while I legit thought it was a Lost World track... The Saturn soundchip is really good??
Yes! The Saturn was using PCM CD quality audio being read straight from the disc, so composers could use the exact synthesizers they wanted! The Saturn in particular used a Yamaha YMF292 chip that had modes for both FM synthesis and PCM audio, as PCM could take up a lot of space on disc. That 5th-gen era of consoles (PS1/N64/Saturn) was a really experimental time where a lot was happening. (It's also a great Wikipedia rabbit hole to fall into...time to close a couple tabs...)
I've done Act 2, so why don't we cover Act 1?
I do like the soundfont used for this whole soundtrack, it has such a lush and clear sound. The rhythm section is so nicely set up--piano in the background with a bright bass and active drums. There's some low synths in the very back as well that sparkle deep in the mix--like how water can sparkle under moonlight. The melody is a muted but flowing violin synth. The bridge section has some nice chordal movement, followed by a gorgeous piano solo that flows into the turnaround.
Oh, and before I forget--Richard Jacques is the composer on this, and this track quotes a song he would later write for Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast--listen to this, then listen to It Doesn't Really Matter, especially the chorus! The vocals are preformed by T.J. Davis, who also worked with Jacques on the Sonic R soundtrack. I love seeing composer and artist continuity, especially in SEGA!

"Walking on the Moon" is a reggae song by British rock band the Police, released as the second single from their second studio album, Reggatta de Blanc (1979). The song was written by lead vocalist / bassist Sting. It went on to become the band's second No. 1 hit in the UK.
The video was shot at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in 1979. It features the band playing their respective instruments near a Saturn V moon rocket (although Sting is seen with an electric guitar, not bass) intercut with some NASA footage. It was directed by Derek Burbidge.

Awesome, recent PBS (!!!) special on Guitar Wolf, with loads of live action and a couple good, brief interview segments.
Guitar Wolf explaining how he decided on the new bassist after Billy Bass Wolf passed: "Anybody can play guitar... but very few people have explosion personality."
This 25-minute flick is from a series of short live band mini-docs called Subcarrier, "produced by Alabama Public Television in Birmingham, filmed exclusively at SATURN."

Todays rip: 13/11/2023
BUSTER HAND
Season 4 Episode 1 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips Volume A
Ripped by Zoom
youtube
Yesterday's post on World Out There covered a very particular specialty by ripper Jamangar - arranging songs into the style of Undertale/Deltarune's music. The instrumentation and overall sound of Toby Fox's music is of course iconic, yet there's another half to the equation that's equally as fun to see played with - the distinct melodies and tunes that those instruments play part of!
I've explored this a bit in the past with kris gaming and SUNGORE, yet for as good as those are (SUNGORE especially, good fucking lord) they're missing that one key ingredient that I love to see in melody swaps: when the instrumentation used sounds like it could only ever be from that game. I feel like the N64 was home to a lot of these sorts of games, due to its lack of CD playback - the sampling used by developers to give their games that musical oomf needed to sound on par with what was on PlayStation and Saturn, has resulted in some of the most immediately-recognizable soundscapes in gaming. Be it Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards, or the topic of today's rip: Super Smash Bros, and BUSTER HAND.
Before Smash Bros. were to become known for its absolutely insane quantity of music and having people from all over the industry collaborate on contributing remixes, the original Super Smash Bros. already had such a striking soundscape, with instrumentation unlike anything I've heard since. The instruments only really sound vaguely like equivalents in the real world, occasionally trumpet-like, occasionally like marching drums, and many times something wholly its own. Final Destination carries that torch further than anything else in the game - its shredding guitars sounding almost like whirring meteors whizzing by in the distance, its bass so throughly un-bass-like, yet setting the scene althesame. With that rock-solid of a foundation, BUSTER HAND doesn't need to do more than it sets out to in order to be a distinct and lovely treat to the ears - every part of Deltarune's Rude Buster is here and accounted for under this bizarre, yet immensely rocking set of instruments. The handling of the bassline and guitars in particular always help sell any Rude Buster arrangement, and they're handled absolutely perfectly here.
Zoom unfortunately had a falling out with the SiIvaGunner team a few years back, and to my knowledge now goes under a new alias and doesn't wish to be associated with the channel any longer. It was a personal affair that I wish not to intrude on, and thus I won't look for let alone link to their socials as I typically do. Yet I hope wherever they are out there on the internet, they can be proud of the work they did on SiIva's first four seasons - producing several of my all-time favorite rips in the process.

BCMC — Foreign Smokes (Drag City)
Tumblr media
Each of the four pieces on BCMC’s Foreign Smokes, a full-length collaboration between the guitarist Bill Mackay and the multi-instrumentalist Cooper Crain, begins somewhere small — a few investigatory notes from Mackay’s guitar, a warm drone from Crain’s keys. Ideas are trotted out, the pace and intensity accelerating when both players latch onto something. There is little in the way of pyrotechnics, though the music never stands still or bogs down. This is improvisation as exploration and exchange; one player cuts a trail in a few directions, giving his counterpart options; gesturing with a question, rather than dictating anything.
At the outset of the third track, “Ripple in High Tide,” Mackay bends a few short notes, while Crain sets twinkling touches around the margins. They go on like this until a prodding two-note bass pattern rises up and marches forward. It is a steadying presence, a clockwork plunk of pebbles producing the titular wavelet. Mackay’s picking remains relatively plain, allowing Crain an opening to send shafts of glimmering synth down over the proceedings. Crain’s part established, Mackay takes another step, playing each note just a bit harder, sending the echo farther out. Halfway through, Mackay locks into step over the bassline, walking his guitar into compact bursts as synths sway and sparkle and the organ drone applies greater and greater pressure. This model for playing off of each other — a sonic wall built one intriguing stone at a time — allows either one of Crain or Mackay to incite the action without overshadowing what they’re creating together.
A pearly organ riff emerges from the opening ease of the last song, “Sunset Saturn.” After a few bars, Mackay joins in, sending picked guitar notes tailing out into the reddening sky. The pair trade the spotlight over a persistent drone until they’re deep in conversation; Mackay’s guitar is vivid and peaceful, strumming over a meandering organ which builds to a pleasant bluster, Crain letting loose like a cosmic prog-rocker. Throughout Foreign Smokes, Crain plays with great vitality and without ostentacion, allowing his parts to grow organically from the scene he and Mackay are forming, with the tangible excitement of ad hoc realization. Like his work in Bitchin Bajas, the space illuminated by his music is liable to shift; the ground you’re standing on is still solid, but look up and your surroundings have swirled and warped. What begins in tranquility can quickly turn sordid and eerie, dropping you somewhere more brambled and complex by the end. Sometimes, however, there’s unease from the start. Track two, “The Swarm,” is underlaid by drawn out minor synth chords, which are soon joined by tense squiggles of guitar. Fuller, ostensibly more charismatic guitar and organ parts strive to break through over the top, but the song’s anxious feel breeds on these shifting keys and billowing textures; the bright and the palpable unsettled by hoots from a threatening forest.
The sound of Foreign Smokes is deceptively straightforward considering the rich ambience and evocative moods the pair achieve. While it rewards multiple listens with novel wrinkles – cymbals that settle into the mist, a flinty synth stab that might’ve been shorn from a Depeche Mode chorus  – and is fleshed out and dramatized with a supporting array of synthesizers, the album’s greatest bounty is gathered from the immediate and simple interplay between Mackay’s lightly affected guitar and Crain’s similarly stripped down organ. The first time through, you hear Foreign Smokes in the familiar voices of those instruments, piped and plucked from around the corner, music filling a room you’re not sure you’ve reached until you’re at the center of it.
