Green Grove from the Saturn 3D Blast played on shuffle, and for a short while I legit thought it was a Lost World track... The Saturn soundchip is really good??
Yes! The Saturn was using PCM CD quality audio being read straight from the disc, so composers could use the exact synthesizers they wanted! The Saturn in particular used a Yamaha YMF292 chip that had modes for both FM synthesis and PCM audio, as PCM could take up a lot of space on disc. That 5th-gen era of consoles (PS1/N64/Saturn) was a really experimental time where a lot was happening. (It's also a great Wikipedia rabbit hole to fall into...time to close a couple tabs...)
I've done Act 2, so why don't we cover Act 1?
I do like the soundfont used for this whole soundtrack, it has such a lush and clear sound. The rhythm section is so nicely set up--piano in the background with a bright bass and active drums. There's some low synths in the very back as well that sparkle deep in the mix--like how water can sparkle under moonlight. The melody is a muted but flowing violin synth. The bridge section has some nice chordal movement, followed by a gorgeous piano solo that flows into the turnaround.
Oh, and before I forget--Richard Jacques is the composer on this, and this track quotes a song he would later write for Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast--listen to this, then listen to It Doesn't Really Matter, especially the chorus! The vocals are preformed by T.J. Davis, who also worked with Jacques on the Sonic R soundtrack. I love seeing composer and artist continuity, especially in SEGA!

I got to play the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D Flickies Island (or 3D Blast if you’re in North America) at a retro console section at PAX! I’ve never played this particular version so I was so happy I’ve finally been able to play it! Love this version’s special stages, much better than the Mega Drive.

A sketch inspired by Sonic 3d Blast. I always wondered if they would ever remake it, or make a sequel of some kind.

Sonic 3D Blast (Prerelease, Unused), Sonic 3D: Director's Cut (Rom hack)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The unnamed Crab enemy appeared in one prerelease screenshot of Sonic 3D Blast, although does not appear anywhere in the final game, and was removed from the game's data at some point.
It would later return in a rom hack for the game created by Jon Burton, the game's original programmer. Here, it can be found as an enemy in the game's second zone, Rusty Ruin Zone.

Hey all! I love to give more love to the Saturn 3D Blast soundtrack, so let's go for something smooth today.
This is a mellow track that still incorporates the overarching motif in a subtle way. It's not direct in the melody, but you can feel it there in the progression and the way the music gestures. I love the whirling synth pads, as well as the piano that punctuates the dreamy melody lines. And of course, there's the vocal hits as well to add to the otherworldly vibe. Halfway through, the bass really punches up, as does the melodic presence, and ends on a nice out of key chord before we hit the turnaround on the loop. The drums are an anchor here, keeping the same groove while the rest of the tune pools around us. Great to chill out to!

#365DaysOfVGM Day 191:
Rusty Ruins Zone [Act 1 & 2] (Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island [Saturn, 1999])
Out of all the Sonic franchise music in this list, both Acts of this zone earn my top favorite label! Act 1 fulfills the emotion and nature on top of some nice Synth, I just hafta hand it to that Piano Roll at the very beginning! What you get afterwards are a mix of Synth Strings and reverb-filled Pianos, with a subtle Bass and mysterious “voices” on occasion, all piecing together a peaceful yet mysterious environment that implores you to explore!
Act 2 is where it gets even better in some regards! A faster Drum rhythm, a Piano that trades some of its reverb for energetic melodies, indicating an increased level of intensity and emotion, while preserving the beauty of Act 1 to its fullest, plus a bit of Saxophone, cuz why not? That’s probably why I love certain PMD dungeon themes in their “2nd half” variants too; they know a lot on how to keep the intended atmosphere in the midst of the chaos that “spiced up” versions of earlier tracks usually introduce, with little to no exceptions, all while standing out in their own right.
As the final track to represent the Sonic franchise, of course I’d pick the most atmospheric one to end it on the best note according to my personal preference; if this game’s got your preferred style of Sonic music, you might wanna stick around, because detailed atmospheres like this is what my music taste ultimately centers around! And if not, my VG music masterlist I’m planning to present early next year, has lots of other Sonic music as favorites; 6 entries wasn’t even close to fitting them all, so you can look forward to that too! ¡Adiós!
(Length before loop [Act 1]: 2.5+ minutes, [Act 2]: 3+ minutes)
