Balloon Art Day 3
Day 1 - Day 2
15. Giraffe - Unnamed
Before I got out of bed today, I whipped out a quick giraffe for a warm up. This giraffe is just a dog with different proportions, but I wanted to make a giraffe for a friend's kid. I didn't prepare at all beforehand, but from a purely balloon twisting perspective, I'm really happy with it. One small detail that doesn't show up super well in this picture is that I made the front legs longer than the back. Giraffes' legs are pretty even, but you can clearly see a downward slope in their backs that can be approximated in balloon form by introducing a length difference. This one stopped living up to my expectations once I tried drawing the spots on. Sharpie works wonders on these balloons, but I didn't have a brown sharpie on hand in my bedroom. I used a crayola marker instead, which you can see didn't really stick at all. Ended up being a bit of a mess!
17, 18, 19. Heart, bow, flower - Mother's Day Ensemble
This heart here is my second attempt. It takes some effort to get a balloon to hold an angle like the one in a heart! Even more effort to do it without any swelling in the joint. You can see that the heart here is slightly inflamed, but compared to the one before it, it looks extremely healthy. Aside from that, the bow here is a little uneven, and the flower was intended to have six petals instead of five (one of them being a tad short), but after struggling a while with how I wanted the heart to look, I decided that today was going to be a "finish it even if it's not perfect" kind of day.
20. Sword
I consider this an important skill in the children's birthday party side of balloon art, and for the sake of possibly making a little bit of money at some point (it's so hard to do things on a just-for-fun basis nowadays), I've resolved to eventually perfect the blade. The challenge of the sword is inflating the balloon just enough that you can still make the few required twists while resulting in a round, inflated tip. Now, the bubble at the front of this one is a bit long, and that's not the challenging part, but I got a little turned around at the start of this one. The tip top is slightly under-inflated. Only slightly, though, so I'm satisfied with this as a first try.
21. Mushroom
This one was also a little sloppy, but it's such a cute little thing that I was really happy to finish it regardless. A developing theme is that I will make bubbles bigger than a tutorial calls for and run out of balloon faster than intended when I iterate the process. This mushroom has a slightly less robust cap than specified in the tutorial I followed, but once again, it doesn't matter too much. I find that it's pretty fun to not measure anything and just work it out on my own when something goes wrong.
22. Corn (failure)
This one involves weaving six balloons at once into basically a tall basket. I couldn't handle that many balloons at once! No biggie though, this was a big step up from what I've done up to this point. The mode of failure was a pinch twist, which is consistently a technique that I'm a little nervous about due to a fear of popping. This time, it was in between a lot of other bubbles and I must have pulled a bit too hard, because the balloon I was twisting did indeed pop. I feel comfortable saying I bit off more than I could chew here, but I'm exercising my jaw every day, so I'll come back around for this one another time!
23. Sword (not pictured)
This one was both to see if I could do it better this time, and because I just wanted to play around. I didn't do it any better this time though. I don't want to sit down for a day of nothing but swords until I get the inflation level to be perfect, but I think that might be the best way to learn. I'll keep working hard, whatever that looks like!
24. Camel - Wendy
Yup, that's right, she's meant to be a camel. I didn't get as much height as I'd have liked out of her hump because the bubbles that make up her torso are slightly different lengths. I was also cutting my balloon length pretty close at the end, because this is one of the rare designs that leaves the very end of the balloon inflated. Her front legs are also longer than her back legs, and not on purpose this time! I don't mind for now though. Hard to feel frustrated when I'm holding a cute little animal that I made!

National I Love My Feet Day is celebrated on August 17 every year. You might be wondering why feet are being celebrated — well the real question should be ‘why aren’t you celebrating it?.’ We know feet are sometimes associated with being gross, but the truth is feet do a whole lot for us as humans: from carrying our entire body weight to carrying any extra load we carry, like groceries and other heavy materials. Feet are the foundation for the entire body in terms of support, balance, posture, and overall well-being, so they should be catered to.
History of National I LOVE My feet Day
National I Love My Feet Day was invented by Carolyn Jenkins and was intended to be a day in which people not only loved their feet but took proper care of them. Taking care of your feet is of utmost importance for individuals with diabetes or certain circulatory conditions. It is worth knowing that 75% of all adults have a foot problem, and we should aim to drastically reduce that number. These foot problems usually come from wearing improper footwear, such as oversized or undersized footwear as many people still don’t know their accurate sizes.
Footwear choices have to be carefully made as they can create a lifetime of misery if chosen wrongly. As our feet are our primary mode of transport, we often forget how hard they work while they quietly and faithfully help us stand, walk, run, skip, jump and play sports. They take us wherever we want to go — from school to work and recreational sites. They withstand all the things we do in our everyday lives, accomplishing a lot of things our hands cannot.
National I Love My Feet Day serves as a reminder to learn about our feet, share good foot care tips, footwear guidance, foot care, and product information, and partake in activities to help us celebrate our feet and keep them healthy. The inaugural I Love My Feet Day was observed in 2015 after submission by Carolyn Jenkins in May 2015. It has been observed annually ever since and this year makes it the eighth celebration of I Love My Feet Day.

‘Cause You’re A Sky Full of Stars (I’m Going To Give You My Heart)
My fic for Day 1 of Alex Manes Week 2020 | Prompt: Home Can Be A Person

It was nearing sunset when Alex pulled his jeep beside the familiar, fading colors of Michael’s white-and-blue truck and cut off the engine. Looking around from where he sat in the driver’s seat, the place hadn’t changed in the decade since he’d last been here. He had been a hopeful 17-year-old in love, high on dreams of the future, carving A M into tree bark.
Alex chuckled under his breath. They hadn’t been brave enough to add the plus or a heart. With only two letters, it could easily be mistaken for Alex’s own initials, but Michael had left an empty space between with whispered promises of someday and after.
Someday, if they were braver.
After, when they’d be adults and free.
It was a sweet kind of irony that the reason they had always came here then was the same reason he was here now.
Michael had always found comfort in the desert.
Alex stepped out of the jeep, the uneven sand beneath his feet sinking in greeting. He sent a quick prayer of thanks that he had the sensibility to put on boots this morning - his prosthetic would be hell to deal with if sand got in it - before locking the car and heading forward.
A heavy breeze brought the sound of tree leaves ruffling, their healthy emerald color shimmering under the orange desert glow. It also brought sharp clinks of glass hitting rock from where Michael sat facing the sunset.
His body was a dark shadow against the tan background, the light illuminated stray curls escaping from under his trademark black cowboy hat. It reminded Alex of a scene in an old western.
Michael had to know he was here - he couldn’t be so drunk that he missed the loud rumble of Alex’s jeep - but he hadn’t turned around. Alex supposed that means he has to go to him. Though if he’s being honest with himself, the only somewhat flat part of the stone that can be used climb to Michael looked a lot more daunting at 28 than it had at 17.
Probably because the last time he’d climbed up and down that rock it had been with two steady legs and a sober Michael to lend a hand.
Banking on familiarity with the path and muscle gained from a decade of military training to compensate, Alex ducked under the tree blocking his way and started up. It was slow going, frustratingly slow, but he made it to the top without any injury to himself or his leg.
“You climbed up.”
Alex took that as an invitation and sat down, his legs (all one and a half) joining Michael’s in dangling off the edge. “I did,” he answered.
Michael grunted and offered him a bottle. “Whiskey?”
Alex took the bottle from him but shook his head. “I shouldn’t. One of us has to drive back eventually.”
“Then give back the bottle.”
Alex tipped it over the edge, far enough that sand would cushion the fall and it wouldn’t break. If the level of whiskey and the bottle opener he had scene in the truck were any indication, Michael was at least three shots past tipsy. He didn’t need to drink anymore.
“Or do that,” Michael scowled.
“You’re drunk enough already. It’ll be hard enough to climb off this rock sober, I don’t want to have to carry you.”
Michael flung a hand forward, “That’s what jumpin’ is for.” Obviously, his tone said.
Alex raised an eyebrow and gave the rock a kick with his bad leg. Boots were okay for walking, but they couldn’t keep all the sand out if he took a 15-foot drop into it. This was a new prosthetic too, and his doctor at the vet hospital in Albuquerque would kill him if he ground down the joints in less than a month.
Michael’s face clouded over, jaw clenched shut.
“We gonna talk about why you’re up here?”
”I like the view,” he drawled, tipping his hat with a playful smirk.
“You seem upset,” Alex prodded.
Michael snorted. “You’d think. I’m not.”
“Oh?”
Michael’s eyes crinkled in the corners. “Really, I swear,” he laughed. “Look,” he whispered, pointing head of them.
The sky was glowing.
As far as Alex could see, the sky was a myriad blue, purple, and pink shades. Where the sun still hit it, the sand, so often harsh and burning, reflected the colors back to the sky as if it was waving to an old friend. The rest formed a black contrast that seemed to deepen each shade. They set in comfortable silence in their oasis, watching the colors merge and morph on the horizon as sun inched down lower.
“Before I joined the Air Force, I assumed I’d never leave the west coast. I wanted to be a musician, so kid-me just knew that all I’d have to do was go to L.A. and never leave. I’ve never even been to L.A.” Alex remarked to himself, eyes still on the horizon. But in between the camouflage of fatigues and the gunpowder smoke, I saw so many different people, so many cultures.” He let his awe fill his voice as he spoke. “And I’d catch myself missing this ... empty desert that I grew up miserable in.”
Michael glanced at him with a confused smile.
“What?”
Michael shook his head softly. “I never thought of Roswell as home. I didn’t even live here until I was eleven. And Max and Iz tried their best but,” he shrugged.
“But you wanted to search the desert for pieces of an alien spaceship,” Alex finished. Michael wanted to leave. He still does, and Liz might have destroyed his best chance at Crash-Con.
“I worked so hard. The consul Liz destroyed would have killed a lot of people and I don’t wish it had, don’t get me wrong,” Michael rushed to say, alcohol slightly blurring his words together as he tried to speak too fast.
“It’s okay to mourn a dream,” Alex reassured him. He tried to project acceptance and comfort instead of the sick loneliness that always settled in when he thought about Michael leaving Earth.
“No, you don’t get it,” Michael exclaimed, knotting his fingers in his hair and knocking his hat behind him in the process. “I’m not mad, not pissed, and I should be so that’s why I’m drinking on a rock on a Monday.”
He must have scene a puzzled look on Alex’s face because he started to clarify.
��You said when you were a kid and home in Roswell, you wanted to see the world and once you did, you missed home, right?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Alex nodded. How did that have to do with anything?
“I always felt like I was already seeing the world and I was always missing home, even if I didn’t remember it. I don’t know when it changed but when I realized that consul had blown up and I hadn’t even tried to save it, I just ran off to help you and then Maria?”
He gestured to the whiskey bottle laying in the sand. “Yeah, I’m mourning, but I’m mourning my chance to see my past and to visit that world. I don’t feel like it’s my home anymore.”
The sky had lost its color now. If the sunset had been an old western, this was a black-and-white picture movie. Everything he saw was monochrome, washed out in grays and blacks.
“Roswell still sucks,” Michael continued. “but that’s okay. It’s not my home.”
Alex took a deep breath as if steadying himself for the answer. “What is?”
Michael met his eyes with a steady gaze. He looked confident, the slight glaze and wide eye-look from alcohol making his irises shine as if the moon itself was looking at him under the colorless sky.
He smiled sadly. “Home can be a person, Alex. I found mine when I was seventeen. It’s just taken me a little while to realize it, is all.”
Oh. Oh. Alex didn’t say anything, just stared at Michael in wonder. He didn’t think he could speak if he tried. He never expected, he, that - he never expected this. That he loved Michael more than Michael loved him was a fact that he had come to terms with. He didn’t know what to do with this.
Would Michael regret this in the morning?
Alex knew he was too afraid of the answer to ask.
After long, Michael’s face lit up with relief. His emotions had always changed often and quickly, even when they were kids. He understood the need, of course, to project a feeling you thought someone wanted from you, but unlike Alex, Michael seemed to actually feel it.
“You don’t need to respond. Really, you already have,” he pointed out.
Yeah, maybe.
“Let’s just lay here, yeah?” He leaned back, head to the sky.
Alex joined him, still silent. Words echoed in his head, each thing taking on a new meaning he hadn’t seen before.
They’re my family, Alex! All right, maybe. But you’re mine.
I loved you. And I think you loved me.
I know you loved me.
I know what he means to Alex
You are the best of me.
“In a little bit, I’ll be sober enough to move you down,” Michael whispered. “Until then, the stars are out.”
He meant float him down off the rock with telekinesis, Alex realized. For some reason, the notion warmed him almost as much as Michael’s earlier confession had.
Alex nodded, and they lay together under the stars illuminating the sky, Michael’s low humming joining the sounds of desert coming to life.

Closeup Headcanons.
01. scalp. |So basically: He’s got a good clean scalp. Nothin dry or falling out, healthy over all. Hair starts from the left and moves right.
02. hair.
He’s got a lotta hair, it grows fairly quick but nothin unmanageable. He’s got a good thick head of wavy hair that makes for one hell of a bed head. Other wise it’s brushed off neatly to the right. Hair kind of climbs down his neck a bit and perks up in the back. He likes to keep the back of his heady a little mowed down so he doesn’t have too much hair weighing on him to make em feel hot n’ sweaty. It thins out a bit around his ears into a softer light material feeling less like hair and more like fur with little tufts poking out from his ears. usually kind of messy and frilly around his ears.
03. forehead.
Nothin much to talk about here. It’s usually covered by his hair anyways.
04. temples.
Probably one of the places he squeezes every now and again when some idiot starts opening their fat mouth. While mostly obscured by hair it’s easy to at least rub one i without sticking your hand through a fat head of hair.
05. eyebrows.
He’s got thick but manageable eyebrows. Grows in a darker color than his hair and naturally curled into a slight glare, nothin he can control which makes it a bit uneasy to look at when he’s got a blank expression. Over all well kept. Appearance is a lot when in a business like this.
06. eyes.
His eyes are orange, a bright ember kind of color which go to a more golden look when magic is in play. They’re usually over shadowed by his hair giving him a rather intimidating stare with the help of those reflective mirrors in his eyes giving them a bit of a glow in the dark. Pupils work like cat eyes going from big black dots to thin slits.
07. ears.
Ears poke out from the top of his head. They’re a bit big and end in a rounded pointed end. Very sensitive to sound and being blown into and usually perked up when possible. Having anything put over them is a quick way to make him uncomfortable. Probably the softest thing on his more notably the back of his ears. Doesn’t appreciate when anything is put into his ears and are generally what gives him expression.
08. nose.
He’s got a good nose on him, not too big, not too small, and it has a great sense of smell. Able to detect anything he’s familiar with up to 20ft. Has a little color on the tip of it and a deep scar that rolls across it giving it a slight indent where the blade had sliced deep. Not noticeable until you give it a closer look though.
09. cheeks.
He doesn’t have bright cheeks but there’s differently some color to it. A few smaller scars have marked them up but nothing serious. Light soft hairs grow faintly on the sides of his cheeks can’t really be pointed out until you feel it for yourself.
10. lips.
he’s got nicely shaped lips, they tend to be a little chapped, has a scar or two running through them and tend to frown when relaxed. Though expressive when he does move them giving him a great wide smile when he needs it.
11. teeth.
He’s got sharp ones folks. Each one of them have a pointed end, His canines are rather big even given a smaller but noticeable second pair on his top row of teeth. As you reach further into his mouth his molars bend inwards in a sharp point. If he managed to get a good bite on anyone those inward facing teeth are bound to at least take a chunk with em. They’re brushed pretty well giving him a good pearly smile.
12. mouth.
He’s got a big mouth. Opens up wider than most humans could ever dream of makes it easy to get around his big canines and lets him shove quite a bit of food in there before his cheeks are full.
13. jaw.
Strong jaw, the kinda jaw that can be a table if need be. Littered with spiked dark red stubble.
14. chin.
I’d say he has a pretty good chin, not huge but broad with a very slight dip in the middle of his chin, nothin to make it too noticeable but it’s certainly there. Also littered with dark red stubble.
15. neck.
(back and front.)
He’s actually got a pretty long neck, it’s thick to match his muscular body and pretty exaggerated in the neck area. Down the back of his neck grows a trail of hair that generally goes from red to a purple color towards the start of his back. Mostly untouched besides a few scars that run up or down from other places.
16. collarbones.
Sturdy collarbones exaggerated by his muscular body. A few scars scrape down the area but nothing serious.
17. shoulders.
(muscles.)
A very stiff and tight area for him. Being top heavy gives him quite a bit of tone up there and the place he tightens up when out in public or at the rink to maintain posture.
18. shoulders.
(joints.)
The shoulders themselves has a good shape to them. Purple fur sprouts from here curling outwards into thick tufts that are well brushed and wavy on his shoulders. Usually put over his clothing. As it goes out towards his arms the fur thins out into red hairs. Probably has some big scars hidden under the fur given it’s a common place to get hit.
19. upper arms.
Upper arms are well built. Hams if you will. Could probably crush skulls i I’m honest. Also littered in red hair that grooms off to the side away from the body. It’s soft and nice to touch. Also littered in a fair amount of scars.
20. elbows.
Sturdy and well callused things rough all around really.
21. forearms.
Maintains the same kind of muscle his whole body has. The tops of his arm and around the wrists is where his fur grows bleeding out a bit onto his hands. Wavy purple fur sprouts and grows up his arm a ways before breaking into red arm hair. Usually strapped down by bandage wrap and arm guards.
22. wrists.
His fur grows around his wrists. Nothing much else to say.
23. palms.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Add ginger, onion, garlic, chili peppers, lemon, Lime, turmeric, and cayenne into a mason jar.
Pour apple cider vinegar in the jar until all the ingredients are fully covered and the vinegar reaches the top of the jar. You want to be sure all the ingredients are covered to prevent spoilage.
Use a piece of natural parchment paper under the lid to keep the vinegar from touching the metal, or use a plastic lid if you have one.
Shake jar to combine all the ingredients and store in a dark, cool place for 4-6 weeks, remembering to shake the jar a few seconds every day.
Store from 1- 8 weeks ( the longer you store it the stronger the potency and taste), use a mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain out the solids, pouring the vinegar into a clean jar. Be sure to squeeze out as much of the liquid as you can. This stuff is liquid gold
Add honey to the liquid and stir until incorporated. ( if you wish, for newbies this might help with the taste.
Taste your fire cider and add more honey if needed until you reach your desired sweetness.
Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator or in a cold, dark place.
Drink 1-2 Tablespoons when needed. I take a shot first thing in the morning/ after my workout, and before bed.
Set it into a cool, dark place and let the vinegar become infused with the ingredients for about a month. I do go really heavy on the Chili during the winter and only use ACV organic ( buy at life store in Norway). If it is your first time, I suggest you start small and dilute your ACV with 50 % water. I am going to store this for about 4 weeks, as I am running low on the one I made the last time, but I normally store for about 8 weeks.
HOW TO USE TIPS:
Take a shot (about 1-2 Tablespoons) straight up.
Dilute the fire cider tonic with warm water or juice.
Swap vinegar in a salad dressing for fire cider
Drizzle over steamed veggies.
Use as a marinade for meat, etc.
Use as a hangover cure. ( not for me LOL)

If you are like me and your sinuses are always seeking revenge on you, I suggest bringing sinus meds or headache/pain reliever just in case things start acting up on board. Also, pack whatever you prefer for a sleeping aid whether it is sleepy tea, melatonin, or the hard stuff.
04. Get a Good Seat:
Keep checking and re-checking your flight map to keep an eye on any available rows. If an entire row is available, try to move to one of those seats in hopes of having an entire row to lay down and pass out during the flight. If a row isn't available, take an aisle seat. With a good supportive pillow, it won't matter where you are seated, but your legs will thank you for the ability to easily get up and walk around.
05. Stay Charged:
Make sure that all of your electronics are thoroughly charged! Most flights now offer laptop plugs and USB plugs for charging. But, every now and then, you will inevitably be in the one seat that isn’t working so always be prepared!
06. Bring Sufficient Entertainment:
Of course movies and games are offered in flight. A recent flight that I was on was having issues with the entire entertainment system. This is a great reason to always have backup options like books or games on your devices or just a good old deck of cards will do the trick!
07. Download in Advance:
If you are planning to read on your phone or kindle, make sure you have everything downloaded and ready to go in advance! You can also download entire albums or playlists in spotify so make sure to do this in advance as well!
08. Take the Specialized Meal:
A little tid bit from a vegetarian: Select a special meal. You can do this in advance through your airline. Doesn’t matter what you chose… gluten free, vegetarian, etc. You will always get served first. Special meals are handed out at the start of meal time. On long flights, when you start to get inevitably hungry, this can be a game changer!
09. A Good Pillow is Key:
This is really important. The ones given to you on board don’t really count for anything. The main idea is to support your neck well in the hope that you have a nice sleep.
10. Pack A Survival Kit:
Hand cream for the dry skin, hand sanitizer for that sneezing person next to you, eye masks for those travelers that keep the windows open, and ear plugs for all of those rather loud announcements that only seem to come on once you have fallen asleep!
11. Pack a Mini Bathroom:
Pack a travel tooth brush, moisturizing chapstick, face moisturizer, under eye cream, and a small deodorant. At least once during the flight you will want to freshen up! For this reason, I also like to bring a small hand towel to rinse my face.
12. Bring a Good Headphone Set:
I have mentioned this before in other articles. For me, headphones really help to block out distractions and noises when you want to focus on work or fall fast asleep, whichever comes first.
13. Eye & Ear Covers are a Must:
If sleep is your goal, then a really comfortable eye mask and great ear plugs are the way to go. They do offer cheap small ones on board, but I recommend bringing your own and testing it out prior to your flight. While ear plugs are handed out, again, I recommend getting the top of line ear plugs that really block out noise.
14. BRING FOOD!!!!!!!
The meals on the plane are perfectly fine, but they are just airplane food. Bring healthy snacks and buy a healthy meal in the airport to have on hand! I am a HUGE advocate for not getting on the plane without snacks and a full meal. I can’t tell you how many times a flight I was on had to circle the landing airport for an extra hour waiting to land or had to sit on the tarmac just waiting to take off. Having food with you and not having to only rely on the inflight meals is a MUST! Plus, you will be able to insure that you have healthier immune boosting options.
15. Wear Comfortable Clothing:
This goes for any flight but is particularly important on long hauls! Because your legs will start to get uncomfortable, you will want to bend them or curl up in your seat. Make sure to wear pants that allow for this and wear a top that you know you will feel comfortable enough to fall asleep in!
16. Stay Warm:
Make sure to bring enough layers to stay warm! You are given a small blanket but as with the pillow, it is quite thin. I recommend a nice wrap or long coat to snuggle up with. Also, nice thick socks will make a huge difference! The floor of the plane along with the windows seats are usually the cooler parts of the plane.
17. Spare Outfit:
For those REALLY long hauls, bring a change of clothing like a spare top. Around hour 8 or 9, you will be wanting to freshen up or just change it up. This is also great if you are planning to hit the ground running once you land.
18. No Caffeine & No Alcohol:
I know. I know. Trust me. I know how much this one sucks, but caffeine and booze are de-hydrating. Being up in the air is already quite drying on your body so it is ideal to make hydration the main focus and avoid elements that have the opposite affect.
19. Sleep on Schedule:
Set your watch or device to your destination time and try to only sleep during their sleep hours. This can be a huge help in adjusting to a crazy time zone!
20. STRETCH YOUR LEGS!!!!
This is the most vital tip for surviving the flight and the accompanying jet lag. Even prior to the flight, make sure to stand as much as you can and loosen up your limbs. Walk around the airport, do some yoga stretches, whatever works best for you. The main focus is your legs. Sitting in the same position for an extended period of time is rough on your knees, joints, and circulation. Once on board, make sure to get up and walk or even just stand around as much as you can.

Tips on a Cholesterol-friendly Diet
As we’ve all have probably heard, we have two types of cholesterol. We have HDL’s (high-density lipoproteins), more commonly known as “good cholesterol”, and LDL’s (low-density lipoproteins), which are more commonly known as our “bad cholesterol”. Cholesterol is a necessity to the body. However, when we put too much cholesterol into our bodies, it can be detrimental. Not only does high cholesterol put many at risk for different types of heart disease such as coronary artery disease, cholesterol can accumulate and stick to the walls of our arteries, which causes the arteries to become more constricted and narrow, which can obstruct blood flow. (MedlinePlus, 2018) Although there are different medications to regulate a person’s cholesterol levels if they suffer from high cholesterol, a person’s diet is an even healthier and effective approach to controlling cholesterol levels, and for some it can even eliminate the need for cholesterol medication all together.
Diet choices that can help regulate cholesterol levels include consuming more sources of soluble fiber, eating more fruits and vegetables, and increasing intake of omega-3 fatty acids. (Mayo Clinic, 2018) Other ways to control cholesterol levels include limiting intake of foods with high levels of cholesterol, limiting salt intake, and limiting alcohol intake. (MedlinePlus, 2018) Consuming more soluble fiber such as oatmeal or oat bran, fruits such as pears, bananas, oranges, prunes, and apples, and different types of legumes such as kidney beans, lima beans, black-eyed peas, lentils and chick peas will effectively lower LDL levels. (MedlinePlus, 2018) Increasing our intake of omega-3 fatty acids can be done by eating more fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring and trout). Although it won’t necessarily lower LDL’s, omega-3 fatty acids are a heart healthy necessity that can potentially help increase your HDL’s, as well as provide many other heart healthy benefits. (Mayo Clinic, 2018) Limiting intake of foods that already have high amounts of cholesterol include eating less egg yolks, animal organ meats (such as liver), shrimp, and most whole milk products. Limiting salt and alcohol intake will help control blood pressure as well as help to avoid weight gain which can lead to high cholesterol. (MedlinePlus, 2018) When trying to regulate cholesterol levels through diet it is also imperative to avoid fried foods as well as extremely processed foods. Another crucial aspect to adjusting a person’s diet is also how they choose to prepare the foods that they’re eating. For example, eating more vegetables and fish is a positive choice, but can quickly become counterproductive if the food is always being served fried. For those out there that are suffering from high cholesterol, healthy diet adjustments could be the key factor to regulating cholesterol levels and decreasing the risk for different types of heart disease in the future, while potentially eliminating the need for medication.

Adding fiber to a diet will help the digestive tract function properly. Additional benefits include reducing the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. A male should get fiber between 30 to 38 grams of fiber a day. A female should get between 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day. Mediterranean diet is a diet that was based on the eating habits of countries that bordered the Mediterranean Sea (Mediterranean Diet, 2019). The benefits of this diet is that most of the fat is coming from the monosaturated fats from the olive oil which does not raise blood cholesterol levels like saturated fats do. There aren’t much saturated fats consumed in the Mediterranean diet. The diet alone is not enough to stay healthy so incorporating exercise or physical activities into the diet will be very beneficial to the health (Mediterranean Diet, 2019). Some research has shown that by following the Mediterranean diet, it can help with weight loss, lower cholesterol, improve rheumatoid arthritis as well as reduce risks of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and various cancers (Godman, 2019). The diet consists of:
fruits, vegetables, bread, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds – (high amounts)
olive oil (monounsaturated fat source)
dairy, fish, poultry (low to moderate amounts) – less red meat is consumed
eggs (about 4x a week)
wine (low to moderate amounts)
water (plenty is best)
Instead of:
Crackers, chips, pretzels and ranch dip
- TRY: Celery, carrot or pepper strips and salsa
White rice
- TRY: Quinoa
Sandwiches with white bread or rolls
- TRY: Sandwich fillings in whole wheat tortillas

Burdock Root Benefits: How Can You Use This Powerful Plant?
Today, more and more people are discovering the health benefits of burdock root, particularly for skin, digestion, and detoxification. What's more, you can enjoy this little-known gem as a tasty root vegetable!

Sprinkle with Himalayan pink salt.
Bake for about 10 minutes.
Once browned on the bottom, flip and bake the other side for 5 to 10 minutes.

You can purchase dehydrated burdock root herbs — which may contain just the root or other plant parts — or make them yourself. Once dried, you can steep it in tea, add to a recipe, or grind and add to a capsule.

1 burdock root
Directions
Wash thoroughly.
Cut the roots into small pieces with a paring knife or grate the root.
Arrange the root pieces in a single layer on a baking sheet to dry in the sun for 3 or 4 days, or bake them at 250 F for 4 hours.
Dried roots will keep in an airtight container for up to a year.

You can purchase pre-prepared burdock root tea or use dried roots you've harvested yourself.

Place burdock root strips in a teapot.
