Best Silver Age Teen Titans stories (according to me)
Narratively Significant to the Teen Titans
Teen Titans (1966) #53 "In the Beginning": The original Fab5 team formation story
Teen Titans (1966) #50-52 "The Coast-to-Coast Calamities", "Titans East! Titans West! And Never (?) the Teens Shall Meet!", "When Titans Clash": The first time Titans East and Titans West were defined (with the first massive team up of 15 Titans):
Teen Titans (1966) #34 "The Demon of Dog Island": Babies' first friend-got-possessed-now-we-must-save-them story!
Interesting Storylines
Teen Titans (1966) #17 "The Return of the Mad Mod": Honestly, I love this story for being the first story where the problem is solved by everyone but Robin because I was so used to the modern stories of Dick being the only one allowed to have a brain
Teen Titans (1966) #37 "Scourge of the Skeletal Riders": They legitimately face off with what seems to be the four horsemen of the apocalypse, maybe evade death, and got their bus fixed by the horsemen's blacksmith? It's all completely unexplained! (Fun to tie in with the implication that they may be immortal though!)
Teen Titans (1966) #38 "Through These Doors Pass the Bravest Titans of Them All": Explores Dick, Donna, and Mal's dreams and insecurities which is fun and it's a little funny to me that all the redheads (Lilith, Wally, Roy) escapes this exploration
The Brave and the Bold (1955) #102 "The Commune of Defiance": A story about civil disobedience portrayed in a good light where the Titans participate!! A story about improving a neighbourhood!!! It's so good I actually teared up a little. If you read nothing else, read this!!!!!!! I'm obsessed with this story actually!!!!!!!!!!
Teen Titans (1966) #41 "What Lies in Litchburg Graveyard": Another story with quite heavy exploration of the history of slavery in America. Is it accurate and sensitive enough? It's like really not my place to say but it seems to be written to teach people at that time about the impacts they have Mr Jupiter raised by a cool black lady which is cool to me!
Fun and Games~
Teen Titans (1966) #9 "The Big Beach Rumble": They have cute sweaters and scooters and fun, who doesn't love a beach ep?
Teen Titans (1966) #11 "Monster Bait": My favourite Fab5 story from here really, just fun and silliness
Teen Titans (1966) #13 "The TT's Swingin' Christmas Carol": A Teen Titans adaptation of the Christmas Carol, who doesn't want to see KF, A-lad, and WG as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Future?
Teen Titans (1966) #19 "Stepping Stones for a Giant Killer!": They clown the villain SO much in this one it's just fun
Teen Titans (1966) #27 "Nightmare in Space" (with optional pre-reading of #26 "A Penny for a Black Star" which is the set up): Teen Titans go to space to rescue a lost friend and Donn befriends some funky little cute aliens, what is there not to love?
Teen Titans (1966) #32 "A Mystical Realm, A World Gone Mad!": You get to see the JLA as knights which is very funny and it has lots of Wally and Mal moments in the silliest possible form

Carmen Jane Plant
Tumblr media
Carmen Jane Plant is the daughter of Maureen and Robert Plant. She works as a professional dancer and teaches belly-dancing and ethnic dancing. She produced the 2018 show ‘The Serpent Slayer’.
Early Years and Family
Tumblr media
[Robert, Maureen, and little Carmen at the family's farmhouse near Kidderminster, Worcestershire, 1970]
Carmen Jane Plant is the eldest children and the only daughter of Led Zeppelin's frontman Robert Plant and his wife Maureen née Wilson. She was born on 21st October 1968 in Birmingham, England and has two younger brothers, Karac Pendra Plant and Logan Romero Plant. She has a younger half brother from her father's side, Jesse Lee Plant aka Jordan Plant.
Carmen is of Indian descent from her mother's side and of Romani descent from her father's. The 1972 Led Zeppelin song, “The Ocean,” actually references Carmen in one of the lyrics: "‘I’m singin’ all my songs to the girl who won my heart/She’s only three years old but it’s a real fine way to start".
Tumblr media
[Robert with his children Karac and Carmen at their farm, filmed in 1973 and seen in Led Zeppelin film's "The Song Remains the Same", released on 1976.]
During the 1970s, she attended the Elmfield Rudolf Steiner School in Stourbridge, West Midlands.
On October 2007 Robert admitted he regrets staying on tour throughout the 1970’s because he feels his daughter grew up without knowing who he was. Robert claimed she once mistook him for a burglar after he came home from a particularly long tour: "What I recall for the first two years is my daughter not really knowing who I was and getting rather agitated when I came back off tour, as she thought I’d come to rob the house."
In an interview for the People magazine (December 20 1976) Robert explains: "Carmen used to think she had two fathers—the one whose singing she heard through the speakers and the one on whose knee she was sitting. They [Carmen and Karac] love it when I come back to tell them tales."
Car accident and Karac's death
Tumblr media
[The Plants with Scarlet Page (C) in 1976]
Carmen was also a passenger in Robert and Maureen Plant's car involved in a road accident on the Greek island of Rhodes on 4 August 1975. Maureen was driving a hired Austin Mini with her husband and their children plus Scarlet Page. The Plant family were seriously injured when the car skidded off the road and collided with a tree but Scarlet Page was unhurt. In the back-seat, Carmen suffered a broken wrist, cuts and bruises. Scarlet's mum Charlotte Martin and Maureen's sister Shirley Wilson, who were following in the car behind managed to get medical help.
In 1977, Carmen also became ill with the same stomach enteritis which took the life of her younger brother Karac Plant, aged only 6.
Personal Life
Tumblr media
[Carmen and Robert in 1988]
On 21 November 1989, Led Zeppelin reformed with Jason Bonham on drums, for Carmen's 21st birthday party at Hen & Chickens public house in Oldbury, West Midlands. They performed 'Trampled Under Foot', 'Misty Mountain Hop', and 'Rock and Roll', with Chris Blackwell and Phil Johnstone in support. The Nashville Teens and Jimmy Page's daughter Scarlet Page, were also in attendance.
Tumblr media
[Carmen with Charlie Jones]
Carmen Plant got married to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's bass player Stephen Charles "Charlie" Jones (born 13 Oct 1965), at St. Peter's Church, on 18 May 1991. Their wedding reception was held in a series of marquees at Robert's farm at Kidderminster. Roy Harper's song 'Evening Star' was written for Carmen for the occasion.
Carmen and Charlie Jones have three children, their eldest a daughter named Sunny Plant-Jones (born 1993). The family lives in Bath, Somerset.
Professional Career and Recent Years
Tumblr media
Carmen Plant Jones works as a professional dancer and teaches belly-dancing and ethnic dancing. She was tutored in belly-dancing by Serena Ramzy, wife of Hossam Ramzy who performed in Page and Plant's "No Quarter Middle Eastern orchestra". Carmen Plant has appeared at the Rivermead Womad Music Festival, Glastonbury Festival, and with the Babylon Arabic Ensemble.Carmen continues to carry on the family’s musical legacy through Middle Eastern-inspired performing arts. In a 2018 article about her dance production ‘The Serpent Slayer’, Carmen Jane Plant acknowledges her fortunate upbringing: “I come from a musical family, obviously through my dad, my husband, and my children as well. Thanks to my dad, I grew up listening to an alternative and eclectic range from a young age and that really provided the inspiration for me to get involved with all kinds of music. It’s all that I’ve known really, so it’s great that I can put this all in to practice.”

The science of time travel
This is my first post so please share any thoughts on what I should improve? What is time travel
Time travel is a commonly spoken about science fiction concept, but what actually is it? An object time travels if the difference between its departure and arrival times, measured in the physical world, does not equal the duration of the journey the object went through. In other words, an object time travels if it is moving at different points in time.
This concept is regularly explored in various films such as “Back to the Future” using the “Flux Capacitor”, as well as in Doctor Who with “The TARDIS”. In both of these cases, an object is used to allow the characters to go back or forwards in time, but will time travel ever be possible?
With the rate at which different areas in science are being explored, discovered or further developed, scientists are now curious whether or not we would actually be able to time travel ourselves. What kind of laws would we potentially be breaking and what kind of ethical issues would be prevalent?
Special relativity
Albert Einstein, arguably the greatest physicist of all time for incredible progress in various fields in theoretical physics, published a research paper in 1905 stating multiple groundbreaking discoveries, one of which was that the speed of light in a vacuum was constant and could not change and is approximately 299,792,458 m/s. The second being the formulation of the most famous equation in physics: E = mc², which explores the idea that mass is equal to energy.
Thirdly Einstein further asserted that Physics was the same for all observers regardless of how fast they were moving; and finally, he challenged the notion that time was absolute and could not change by explaining  that time is not absolute and varies depending on the observers and their motion.
This new understanding of how the universe functions would lead scientists into a new age of incredible discoveries and thought provoking possibilities such as the idea that time travel may be possible!
What is the 4 dimensional world
In order to answer this question, we will have to create an understanding of the world around us, especially that of space-time. In 1908, Hermann Minkowski proposed a framework that would change physics forever. 3 dimensions of space (length, width, height) as well as an extra dimension of time, making a 4 dimensional world. This hypothetical construct would allow the possibility of time travel, as we now know that time is a dimension that could possibly be overcome!
Minkowski described time as being a worldline, a path that traces its way through space-time, allowing physicists to imagine the past, present and future. He then built on this idea and proposed the idea of the block universe which is an idea regarding how we interact with time. Time is a part of this line that we are travelling on, with the future being in front of us and the past behind us. What implications does this have however?
If time does operate in this way, then that would mean we could interact at different points of this line, going to the past or future, making time travel possible.
General relativity:
Einstein, 13 years after his theory of special relativity was published, created a new framework for gravity, going against Isaac Newton’s idea that gravity was a ‘tug of war’ between two objects, explaining that objects with a great mass curve space-time.
This was proved by an astrophysicist called Sir Arthur Eddington who travelled to principal islands, west of Africa, and photographed many stars during an eclipse. During an eclipse, light would have bent due to the high gravitational potential energy of the sun, also called gravitational lensing. If the location in the night sky of the stars was different during the eclipse to a normal day, then Einstein’s theory would be proved correct. Sir Eddington compared the photos during the eclipse to the regular night sky of principal island and gravitational lensing was clearly evident, proving Einstein to be correct.
In the movie Interstellar, when Cooper is about to go onto the water planet (Miller's planet), the characters speak of the idea that 1 hour on that planet equates to 7 years on earth, so they would have to move fast; but how does that make any sense? This can be explained by general relativity. Miller's planet was orbiting a black hole which contains something called a singularity. Singularities are regions of space which are infinitely small with infinite density, meaning the singularity warps space-time to such a high amount that time is slowed down because of it, explaining the difference in time between Miller’s planet and earth.
This new view of the bending of space-time due to an object's mass would be greatly beneficial to understanding time, but why exactly is time linear? Why does it go in one direction?
The arrows of time
Time described by Minkowski’s block universe theory could also be adapted into multiple arrows, namely the thermodynamic arrow of time, the cosmological arrow of time and the psychological arrow of time.
The thermodynamic arrow of time deals with the second law of thermodynamics, that being in a closed system, an object will always tend to a higher entropy. Entropy is the degree of disorder in a system. In thermodynamics entropy will always increase. You can imagine a jigsaw puzzle; there are far more options for the puzzle to be out of order than in the correct order. In the universe, entropy will always increase. This is clearly seen by how galaxies are accelerating away from us. If entropy was decreasing, those galaxies would be trying to come closer together into their original state. This arrow of time therefore states that entropy will continue to increase.
The psychological arrow of time explains how we consciously experience time. When we first become conscious, we perceive time from past to present, with the future going to happen, but why is that? Why don’t we experience the future first? For instance, if you remember yourself knocking a glass off of a table, you recall the sequence of events (how it happened) rather than imagining the glass breaking and then returning to the table.
Causality is key to understanding this arrow of time. Causality means that a cause must always happen after the effect, and we do psychologically recognize that causes happen before their effects. If we were to experience the future first, it would disrupt our understanding of cause and effect. The order in which we witness events shapes how we remember them and navigate through time. For example, if you saw the glass on the table and then suddenly it was broken on the floor, this would create confusion about what just happened.
If we therefore were to time travel, would the psychological arrow of time then affect our memories, or would causality remain?
The cosmological arrow of time explains the expansion of the universe. No matter where you are in the universe, every other galaxy will be moving away from you, except for galaxies with a strong enough gravitational pull, such as the Andromeda Galaxy, colliding with other galaxies. This has been proven by red shift, which is the wavelength of light hitting us from distant galaxies, slightly shifted to the red part of the electromagnetic spectrum, meaning the light is being bent to a slightly different colour that we should see, as those galaxies are accelerating away from us.
These arrows of time would therefore have to be pointing in the same direction in order for time to go on how it does. What I mean by this is that the thermodynamic arrow of time could not result in entropy decreasing, or in the cosmological arrow of time, the universe cannot not expand as this would mean that these two arrows of time are pointing in different directions. This then creates the question, what effect would time travel have on the three arrows of time.
Time is not absolute
Time can vary for different observers based on their motion (their velocity) as well as their interactions with gravitational energy.
Imagine that from the moment you were born, both you and your mother wore watches that would never run out of time or need batteries. After twenty years, if you compared your watches, the different paths each of you took would result in tiny differences in the times displayed on the watches.
These tiny differences in time are caused by time dilation, which comes from two main factors: the relative velocities of each person wearing the watch (as described by special relativity) and the differences in gravitational energy between both of your locations (as described by general relativity). In other words, the different velocities at which you both walked, as well as the different amounts of gravitational potential energy you experienced, would lead to different time readings on your watches.
Can Time Travel Really Happen?
Now that we know the science behind time as well as space, we can make the hypothesis that time travel is theoretically possible, but definitely not with the current level of technology we have. But are there any one way tickets into the future? What about wormholes?
Wormholes
A wormhole is a hypothetical structure, connecting different points in space and different points in time. A wormhole is often imagined as a shortcut through space and time. It was first conceptualised after Einstein released his famous field equations in 1915 which connect the geometry of space-time to the matter within. A wormhole can be described as a tunnel with two ends at two separate points in space-time.
If wormholes were to be real, time travel would be possible as you would be able to travel between two completely different regions of space, very far away, instantly, or even go forwards or backwards in time.
Unfortunately Wormholes have not been identified yet and still remain only a mathematical possibility. Many scientists have uncertainty about whether or not they exist because they also pose another issue, that being that they require negative energy as said by Kip Thorne in a 1988 paper, which is only possible in black holes.
Lets now say that we were able to use negative energy and keep the wormhole open, another problem arises, we still would not be able to choose which part of space or which part of time we would like to enter from as well as if the time we are entering from has kept to our causal arrows of time, creating multiple other issues that could lead to you never coming back to your original timeline.
Are there any other ways of time travel?
Quantum weirdness
In the tiny world, particles do not function in the same way as larger objects. Quantum particles undergo very strange processes that would be normally impossible. One of which being Quantum Entanglement.
Quantum entanglement is when particles become connected in such a way that even over vast distances, they will still be connected. For example, let's say you have a pair of gloves and are packaging the left glove to be sent to a person called Bob and the right glove to be sent to a person called Alice. When Alice opens the package and discovers the right glove, she can then infer that the left glove will be with Bob, even though he could be miles away.  This is similar to how quantum entanglement works. Both particles do not need to know where they are as they would always have that connection that is built into the particles.
This new idea of particles being able to interact over incredibly vast distances instantaneously goes against the notion of causality, but they do open doors we can go through to attempt to dream of time travel by simulating quantum entanglement experiments. Over time we may even be able to instantly teleport objects or even people to the past or future due to the great distances we would be travelling over, basically teleporting us into a different time!
Ethics with time travel
Time travel would be incredibly useful in many fields such as to not repeat any horrible histories that may occur in the future or to be able to use discoveries we have made in the future, now, improving our modern technology by many centuries worth, but what about the ethics surrounding this?
A famous paradox created by time travel is the Grandfather Paradox. If you were to travel to the past and kill your grandfather/grandmother, one of your parents would never be born, meaning you would never be born so how could you kill your grandfather/grandmother. This paradox cannot be explained just yet, but there may be a solution to this that scientists are overlooking.
Another ethical issue would be that an immoral person may end up going to the past or future in order to cause havoc, such as causing a war or even a world war. This would then change the future or past entirely!
A final ethical issue would be the idea that travelling to the future or past could also potentially lead to the breakdown of your body to an atomic level (such as going between locations using quantum entanglement, where you would have to become particles to interact with other particles far away). Would this then lead to the death of your consciousness? Or the death of your current self entirely? These questions cannot yet be answered as we do not have the correct understanding of the brain and consciousness just yet. Is consciousness brought about by evolution in animals, is it a naturally occurring biological state, does it exist physically (could we interact with it directly?) or is consciousness more confusingly caused by the wavefunction collapse in microtubules, as said by Roger Penrose. Answering the question of what consciousness is would be able to answer one of the questions on whether or not time travel is ethically moral.
Is time travel currently possible
Unfortunately we do not have technology advanced enough to even simulate any form of large, real occurrences of time travel (such as the uses of quantum entanglement), however, the field of physics is more popular and vibrant than ever, meaning these areas of research are ongoing and breakthroughs are just around the corner, potentially bringing us closer to time travel.
As we continue to delve into these incredible and thought provoking ideas, we have to stay in the present before we can get ready to explore the future!

Series masterlist here
Your flight was leaving in three days. You had to tell him.
“Jake?”
He looked up from where he was stirring pancake batter on the counter, flecks of flour dusting his pajama top. You thought back to your first date at the coffee shop, and how frazzled he had been because he was late. It seemed like eons ago. You had been different people back then.
Perhaps it had been more simple.
“Yeah baby,” he said, “what’s going on?”
You fiddled with your fingers in your lap, recrossing your legs on the barstool. Ellie was upstairs in her room, fast asleep. Jake’s eyes roamed over your face, a frown appearing as he took in how anxious you were.
“Nat? What’s wrong?” He dropped the whisk and bowl on the counter, stepping to the left and coming to stand on the other side of the kitchen island, his hands reaching across the granite top.
You took a deep breath and lifted your gaze to his. He deserved to hear it all. “I have to go to New York on Tuesday. For work.”
“Oh,” he said, raising an eyebrow. “That’s it?”
You shook your head.
“How long will you be gone?”
A week, maybe more,” you said and you watched Jake’s face fall, opening a crater in your abdomen, all of your hopes and dreams quickly falling into that black abyss.
“A week is nothing, sweetheart,” he said, reaching out and grabbing one of your hands in his. “You’ll be back sooner than you realize.”
“It’s not just that,” you said and your fingers tightened in Jake’s grip as he clamped down. “My boss, Patrick, asked me to lead a due diligence team on our capital markets arm as we expand from the New York practice out here to San Diego.”
“Natalie,” Jake whispered, his face glowing. “That’s amazing! I am so proud of you.”
You tried to choke back the tears that were threatening a flood. “Thank you.”
“Why don’t you look happy?” he asked tentatively.
“In order to do that, I have to be in New York one or two weeks a month,” you said and the realization began to settle on Jake. You felt his hand go limp in yours.
“For how long?”
“I’m not sure,” you said, your voice beginning to wobble. “At least this quarter. Could be longer. Could be a whole year.”
Jake sucked in a breath and you looked up at him through the tears that had started to flood your lash line. “Oh, honey,” he said, walking around the granite island and pulling you into his arms, your face pressed flat against his broad chest, his fingers brushing through your tangled bedhead. “Don’t cry, sweetheart.”
After a moment, you pulled away, wiping haphazardly at the tears staining your cheeks. “I’m sorry.”
Jake chuckled and shook his head. “For what? Being successful at work? God, you have nothing to apologize for, baby. You’re a star. A fucking rockstar.”
“I know you’re looking for someone who can be here for you—” you started and Jake cut you off.
“Nat,” he murmured and his tone was deep. Solem. “I would never tell you that my needs are more important than yours. This is your career. This is the culmination of everything you’ve worked for. I’m not going to stand in your way.” He took your hands in his and smiled. “We’ll be here when you’re done. Don’t worry about me and Ellie. We’ll be here waiting for you, honey. I promise.”
Jake took your face in his hands. He was tender and sweet and you knew he meant what he was saying.
Or at least he thought he did. Maybe he didn’t realize that what he was saying was a direct conflict to what he truly wanted. “Nat, I’m not going anywhere. I love you.”
“I love you, too,” you whispered hoarsely.
Jake pulled you to standing, one hand across your lower back, the other cradling the back of your head. His green eyes were soft, small wrinkles forming around the corners as his mouth turned up in a gentle smile. “I’m proud of you, honey. We’re only ever just a phone call away.”
You were afraid to open your mouth, for fear that all that would come out would be sobs. So instead you wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him in closely. Felt the warmth of his hands on your waist, the tenderness of his lips, the way his body molded into yours. You savored Jake, committing him to memory. Letting his touches build, praying the memories of his hands on you would be enough to tattoo them in your mind. So that when you were gone a part of him was still left on your skin.
***
“Hey baby.”
You held a hand up to the glass. The conference room had a clear view facing north, with One World Trade slightly off to the left, the Brooklyn Bridge to your right. Even though it was closing in on midnight and you were running on fumes and stale office coffee, you had to admit how beautiful the cityscape was.
“How’s it going?” Jake’s voice practically melted through the phone. He barely slept, something you had learned early on in your relationship, and that made phone calls across the three-hour time zone difference slightly easier to organize. He always made himself available to you if he wasn’t in the air.
You sighed into the phone. “The same. It’s going to be a long few months. The team here is good, but they’re not happy about the expansion or integration, and there’s a lot of holes to patch before we announce this firm-wide.”
“If anybody can do it, it’s you,” he said and you smiled, taking a seat in one of the rolling chairs near the large wooden conference table. “How are you, honey?”
“I’m OK,” you said and it was only a half lie. You were drained and exhausted and you wanted to go back to California. Climb into Jake’s king sized bed and have him cradle you in his strong arms. You wanted to eat donuts with Ellie on the beach and feel the smooth breeze of fresh ocean air in your hair. New York was for some people, but it was not for you. “Tired and missing you, but I think we’re finally getting somewhere. I just can’t believe I had to be here every month for who knows how long. This city is something else.”
“Bad?” he asked.
“Just, dirty,” you replied and Jake’s laugh bounced through the receiver. “I literally watched a man throw up on a pile of garbage bags and then just straighten up and keep walking. And everyone around just watched him do it, and then went on their way. It’s insane. I think you could get murdered on the street and nobody would look twice.”
“Be safe, OK?” There was an urgency in Jake’s voice. Fear. “I worry about you, all alone out there.”
You laughed. “Jake, I’m twenty-seven-years-old. I can take care of myself, I promise.”
He paused. “Wait, what do you mean you’re twenty seven?”
You bit your lip. “My birthday was last week.”
“Nat!” There was pure shock and hurt in his words. “Baby, why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it,” you said. “I was going to New York, we were busy. Jake, please, it’s fine.”
You could perfectly picture him shaking his head. “Honey. I wish you woulda told me.”
“I’m sorry.” You practically whispered it.
“Don’t be sorry, baby,” Jake said softly. “But expect a party when you get home to make up for the fact that I missed my girlfriend’s twenty-seventh birthday party.”
“Jake,” you whined, “please. I hate big parties.”
“Then just us,” he said.
“And Ellie.”
You could practically hear his smile on the other end of the line. “The three of us. We’ll make a day out of it. Do all of your favorite things.”
“How about Saturday?” you asked. “I’ll be home late Friday night, but I can pop over Saturday morning.”
“We’ll see you on Saturday, sweetheart,” Jake said softly. “I love you. Now go back to your hotel and get some rest, OK? Text me when you get to your room.”
“I love you,” you replied.
“Goodnight princess.”
***
You didn’t make it home on Friday, or Saturday and when Sunday rolled around, they asked you to stay another week and you had no choice but to accept.
Jake was understanding when you called him three days in a row with another departure date and another excuse at hand. He was understanding when he had to cancel the special funfetti cake he had made at the local bakery, and when he had to tell Ellie that you wouldn’t be home over the weekend but that he would take her to fly kites on the beach himself on the next warm day.
Jake was all too understanding when you called him in tears night after night from the stress of the expansion.
It was once you had been in New York for three weeks straight that his patience began to wear thin.
“Why don’t we just come out and visit you?” he asked.
You held the phone to your ear, pacing around the glass wall of the conference room. It was late, most of the team had gone home. You had doordashed a bottle of wine to go with your SUGARFISH bento box that lay half eaten on the shellacked wood table. “I don't know if that’s such a good idea.”
“Why not?” There was impatience layered into his tone. “Nat, it’s been almost a month.”
“I know it has,” you said tiredly. “I’m very aware of how long it’s been Jake.” Your pelvis ached for him and no matter how many times you slipped beneath the covers at night and pressed your hand between your legs nothing could compare to the way Jake made you feel. “It’s just that I don’t even know how much time I’d have to see you guys. It’s not that I don’t want you here, it’s that I don’t want you to fly all the way across the country for just a few hours here and there together.”
“But we’d see you a little bit,” he said with exasperation. “That’s better than nothing.”
“Jake, it’s just not a good idea.” In the distance, you could have sworn you saw a light flicker somewhere in the hallway.
“Jesus, Nat,” Jake sighed. “Fine, forget I asked.”
“Jake—”
“I have to go,” he interrupted. “I’ll talk to you later.”
Before you could open your mouth to reply, the line was dead. You turned around, mouth hung open in shock, to see Peter standing at the door of the conference room, a box of cookies in his hands.
“Is this a bad time?” he asked.
You shook your head and he stepped inside, putting the box down. Peter Reinhardt was one of the younger associates on the capital markets team in the New York office. Compared to some of the other members of the team, he was shockingly intelligent and capable, something you valued highly in a colleague.
“Cookie?” He slid the box over to you and you popped open the top, selecting an oatmeal M&M one and biting into it with a sigh.
“Thanks,” you said, sitting down in the closest seat and crossing your legs. “Why are you still here?”
He gave you a weak smile. Peter was the embodiment of the New York finance guy: slacks, white button down shirt, company vest with Patagonia branding, beat up Gucci loafers. He slicked his jetblack hair and had pearly white teeth. You had actually watched one of the paralegals trip over herself the other day when he smiled at her in the break room. “Reviewing some of the ops briefs. Those guys really don’t know how to write a contract.”
You laughed, tossing the rest of the cookie into your mouth. “Tell me about it.”
Peter fiddled with his hands on the table. “Do you want to talk about it?”
“Ops? I’d rather eat my own leg,” you replied glibly.
He shook his head. “I meant that phone call that I walked in on. Obviously didn’t go like you had hoped.”
You thought about it for a second. Despite being in New York for almost an entire month, you had yet to really bond with any of your coworkers. Most of them had their own lives and families and friends already, and it didn’t help that you spent most nights in conference room C eating takeout and pouring over legal documents. “I just didn’t expect to be here this long,” you said finally. “I thought it would be a week every month but I’ve been here almost the entire month of April and it’s just, it’s wearing on me.”
Peter nodded. “For what it’s worth, you’re doing the work of like ten guys so I have to believe that you won't have to be here that much longer.”
“I wish,” you groaned, leaning one elbow against the table. “My boss in San Diego is kind of a dick. He gave me this position as a test. He thinks I’m going to end up costing the firm maternity pay and he doesn’t want to keep someone that he doesn’t view as a hard worker.”
Peter’s face froze. “I didn’t even realize you were married.”
You shook your head. “Oh, I’m not. He’s just reading between the lines and drawing his own conclusion.”
“So the person on the phone was …”
“My partner,” you replied. “His name is Jake. I feel really guilty that I haven’t been able to see him since I got here.”
“I’m sure he’ll understand,” Peter said. “If he understands work pressure.”
You chuckled. “He’s a Navy fighter pilot, so yes, I think he understands.”
“Wow.” There was genuine shock in Peter’s voice. “A fighter pilot? He better be hideous to counteract it or else there’s no chance for us other guys.”
You opened your phone and pulled up a photo of you, Jake and Ellie that had been taken on Valentine’s Day and slid it over to Peter. “Sorry to break it to you,” you murmured. His eyes widened as he took in the photo, and then he squinted.
“Shit,” he muttered, “you weren’t lying. Who’s the kid?”
“His daughter, Ellie,” you said, pulling the phone back. “She’s four.”
“A kid? That’s big,” he said and it was reminiscent of what Rebecca had said the first time you told her about Jake.
You nodded. “Yeah, but she’s a little peach. She’s the least of my concerns.”
“So you have concerns.” Peter pulled out a chocolate chip cookie and nibbled at one edge.
“I mean, who doesn’t?” you said and it was freeing to talk to someone about Jake who had no context about anything. Who didn’t know about Lizzie or Margot or your history with Sam. It felt like a fresh start. “I’m eight years younger than him. Sometimes I think it’s fine, and other times it terrifies me. Not the age difference, but just like life. I love Ellie to pieces, but am I ready to be a stepmom? Drive carpool and plan birthday parties and make sure she does her math homework and chaperone sleepovers? Is that really where I want to be at twenty seven? Shouldn’t I be out partying and getting wrinkles that I immediately get botox for when I turn thirty? I still feel like a teenager sometimes, how am I supposed to be somebody’s mom?” You grabbed the bottle of wine and poured more into your glass before pouring another glass for Peter and scooting it over toward him. “What if I go back in a week or two weeks and she’s completely forgotten about me?”
“Four-year-olds are smarter than that,” he said and you frowned. “I have a nephew,” he replied and you nodded. “Besides, you need to stop asking yourself where you should be right now and just focus on what you want to be doing. If you want to be a stepmom, then do it. If you want to stay up all night and go clubbing, do it. Stop thinking about what other people expect of you or need from you. What do you want?”
You raised the glass of wine to your lips. When was the last time you let yourself ask that question?
What did you want?
***
You were exhausted, still wearing your work shift dress with the sky high pumps, your legs shaking as you knocked quietly on the door.
After a moment, Jake pulled open the wooden door, surprise splashed across his face. “Honey?”
He stepped forward and pulled you into his arms in a tight embrace, so tight it felt like your lungs might collapse at the pressure. And when he pulled back, his large, warm hands came out to stroke your cheeks, cradling you as he smiled.
“You didn’t tell me you were coming home today,” he whispered and you realized how late it was, and that Ellie was definitely asleep.
Jake pulled the door closed so the two of you were standing on the porch, your legs still wobbly in the heels. “It was a last minute decision,” you said after a moment. “I have to fly back tomorrow.”
“Natalie,” he said and there was so much pain laced into that single word. “Baby, really? Can’t you stay just one day at least?”
You pulled back, crossing your arms over your chest. “Jake, I don’t think this is working.”
He froze. “What do you mean?”
You shook your head. “I’m not what you need,” you said softly. “I’m not here. I know you, Jake. I know what you need from a partner. I know what you deserve. I just don’t think that’s me.”
Jake’s eyes darted around your face. “Tell me you’re joking.”
“I’m sorry.” It came out strained and thin.
“Nat, this isn’t funny,” he said and there was realization threaded through his voice. “I’m not laughing.”
“Jake, it’s not a joke,” you whispered. You reached out to touch his arm and he pulled away instinctively. “I’m just trying to do what’s best for you.”
He shook his head. “No, you’re not,” he rasped. “You’re taking the easy way out.”
“Easy?” Your voice was raised, and you stopped for a moment and looked up toward Ellie’s room to make sure you hadn’t disturbed her. The room stayed dark beyond the window. “Fuck, Jake, you’re making this harder than it needs to be. And it’s already so hard. I want what’s best for you, OK?” The tears had started to fall. “That’s not me. Not anymore. Don't you understand? This is killing me, Jake. But I won't be the reason you're not happy."
Jake stepped closer, his green eyes narrowing, his voice low and sharp. "Why do get to tell me what's right for me? You're the woman I love, Natalie. You're my girlfriend."
You shook your head. “Not anymore, Jake. I'm sorry.”
A/N: OK guys — this is it, this is THE breakup. I've had some comments saying there's too much up and down with the two of them, but I do think that's just how relationships go a lot of the time. In this case, this is the breakup for Jake and Nat, so apologies in advance for the angst. Not a huge spoiler but I promise they will get their happy ending!

His mother was 40 years old when Jesse was born. Jesse grew up in a very rough home in Morgantown, West Virginia. Jesse’s father, who was mentally ill, was a violent man and was abusive to Jesse.
At 13, his father died leaving his mother to take care of him and his brothers. At the time, things weren’t easy for Jesse and he didn’t think life held much hope for him. While Jesse had his struggles, he had dreams too. He wanted to be a ventriloquist and he found books on ventriloquism. He practiced with sock puppets and saved his money until he could get a real ventriloquist dummy. When he was old enough, he joined the military.
The military recognized his talents and placed him in the entertainment corp. He toured the western Pacific Islands as a comedian as part of a G.I. variety show called "Stars and Gripes.” It was there he was able to share his talents with fellow soldiers. In 1946, he was discharged with the rank of Technician Grade 5, which was the equivalent then of a Corporal. During his military service, Jesse was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with 4 bronze service stars), Army Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge (with an M1 Carbine), and Honorable Service lapel pin.
Through his military service, Jesse gained confidence and found that he had a talent for making people laugh. In spite of his early struggles, Jesse became one of the best-loved characters of all time. For it was Jesse,...Jesse Don Knotts who brought us Barney Fife!

Claudette Colbert - The Perfect Star
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Claudette Colbert (born Émilie Chauchoin in in Saint-Mandé, France on September 13, 1903) was a French-American actress who became one of the few major actresses during the Golden Age of Hollywood who worked freelance, independent of the studio system. With her impeccable makeup, trademark bangs, and stunning legs, she became known as "The Perfect Star" during her heyday.
At three years old, Colbert emigrated to Manhattan in order for her parents to pursue more employment opportunities. She studied at Washington Irving High School, which was known for its strong arts program and made her stage debut at the historic Provincetown Playhouse. Intending to become a fashion designer, she attended the Art Students League of New York. While studying, she appeared on the Broadway stage in a small role in The Wild Westcotts (1923).
After appearing in plays in Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston, and Connecticut and the London's West End, producer Leland Hayward casted her in her first film role in 1927. The following year, she signed with Paramount Pictures, where she made films in both French and English.
Colbert's career was boosted when she played the supporting role as a femme fatale in Cecil B. DeMille's historical epic The Sign of the Cross (1932). In 1933, Colbert renegotiated her contract to allow her to appear in films for other studios. This resulted in her most memorable movie, the screwball comedy Columbia Pictures' It Happened One Night (1934), which won her Academy Award for Best Actress.
In 1936, Colbert signed a new contract with Paramount, making her one of Hollywood's highest-paid actress. Colbert spent the rest of the 1930s alternating between romantic comedies and dramas. Still, she found time to volunteer with the Red Cross and participate in the Hollywood Victory Caravan during WWII.
In 1940, Colbert was offered a new contract with Paramount; she declined and continued to work as a freelance artist, securing roles in several prestigious films and television broadcasts in her later years, even winning a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Series in 1988. Colbert also intermittently appeared in Broadway productions, most notable in The Marriage-Go-Round, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress Tony Award.
After retiring from acting in 1987, Colbert divided her time between her Manhattan apartment and her 18th century beachfront home in Speightstown, Barbados, nicknamed Bellerive, where she passed away at 92 years of age after suffering from a series of strokes during the last three years of her life.
Legacy:
Won the Academy Award for Best Actress for It Happened One Night (1934) and nominated two more times: Private Worlds (1935) and Since You Went Away (1944)
Is the only actress to date to star in three films nominated for Best Motion Picture in the same year: It Happened One Night (1934), Cleopatra (1934), and Imitation of Life (1934)

An attempt to rank my top 100 movies growing up.
