6 Ways to Deal with Period Cramps
Tumblr media
UGH cramps — depending on your body and what card you drew in the Menstrual Lottery of Life, period cramps can range from cancel-your-plans painful to just a little uncomfortable. (When mine are really kickin’ it feels like the Uterus Chainsaw Massacre all up in my bod. Not ideal.)
But cramps happen for a reason: That gut-punch you feel is your uterus contracting, meaning it’s squeezing and moving. This makes your uterine lining which is mostly what period blood is made of — move off the walls of your uterus.
So cramps have a purpose, but that doesn’t mean they don’t suck. The good news is there are a few ways to help your monthly uterus nightmare chill out:
Track your cycle
Knowing your period’s around the corner is one way you can be prepared so cramps don’t catch you off guard. Maybe that means planning a hot date with a heating pad and Netflix, or making sure you’re stocked up on pain relievers around your crampiest days. Keeping track of your cramps and other period symptoms can help you and your doctor find the best remedies for you. Planned Parenthood’s free period tracking app Spot On is an easy, private way to keep tabs on your cycle and whatever PMS symptoms you’re having.
Look into hormonal birth control
Hormonal birth control methods — like the hormonal IUD, implant, pill, patch, ring, or shot — can really help with cramps, PMS, and other period problems. If you have hella bad cramps that ruin your life every month (or even if you just want a lighter, easier period or no period at all), hormonal birth control can be a real menstrual GOAT. Our Spot On app also has birth control reminders and handy tips n’ tricks to help you get the most out of your method.
Take over-the-counter pain meds
Taking basic pain medicine like ibuprofen (like Advil), naproxen (like Aleve), or acetaminophen (like Tylenol) is probably one of the easiest and most effective ways to deal with mild-to-moderate cramps.
Exercise
I know, I know. When our nethers feel like they’re full of knives, the last thing many of us want to do is work out. But moving your body and getting that heart rate up releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins that can make you feel better. Even mild exercise like stretching or taking a walk can make a difference.
Feel the heat
Snuggling up with something warm — a heating pad, hot water bottle, your cat  — on your belly or lower back can help soothe cramps and achy muscles. A hot bath can also feel heavenly when there’s a riot in your uterus.
Have yourself an orgasm
It’s true! Orgasms — whether you have them on your own or with a partner — can be a tried and true cramp-helper. They send blood rushing to your downtown area and release feel-good hormones called endorphins that act as a natural pain killer and mood-lifter. So go on, give yourself a treat…for your health!
Cramps are a pretty normal part of periods, but if yours are so painful that it’s hard to do everyday things (like go to school or work) and over-the-counter medicine doesn’t help, talk with your doctor or go to a Planned Parenthood health center. Cramps that are super bad can be a sign of more serious health problems. And you shouldn’t have to suffer every month. Your nurse or doctor can help you manage the pain and put those cramps in their place.

My former U.S. Track and Field teammate Tori Bowie, who was found dead in her home in Florida on May 2, of complications related to childbirth at 8 months pregnant, was a beautiful runner. She was effortless. At the Rio Olympics, I ran the second leg of the 4 x 100 relay. Tori was the anchor. When she got the baton, I remember thinking, “it’s over.” She just accelerated. When she crossed the finish line, I couldn’t wait to run over to her to celebrate. It was her first, and only, Olympic gold medal.
She also picked up a silver (in the 100-m) and bronze (200-m) in Brazil. The next year, at the 2017 World Championships in London, Tori won the 100-m title, earning the title of “world’s fastest woman.” Tori started out as a long jumper. So seeing her thrive as a sprinter was a huge deal. She was just such a bright light, and people were getting to see that.
Tori grew up in Mississippi and had this huge Southern accent. She didn’t take herself too seriously. You felt this sense of ease when you were around her. I last saw her in early 2021, in San Diego, where she was training. She gave me the biggest hug; something about her spirit was just very, very sweet. I felt her sweetness come over me that day.
Tori was 32 when she died. According to the autopsy, possible complications contributing to Bowie’s death included respiratory distress and eclampsia—seizures brought on by preeclampsia, a high blood pressure disorder that can occur during pregnancy. I developed preeclampsia during my pregnancy with my daughter Camryn, who was born in November 2018. The doctors sent me to the hospital, where I would deliver Camryn during an emergency C-section, at 32 weeks. I was unsure if I was going to make it. If I was ever going to hold my precious daughter.
Like so many Black women, I was unaware of the risks I faced while pregnant. According to the CDC, in 2021 the maternal mortality rate for Black women was 2.6 times the rate for white women. About five days before I gave birth to Camryn, I was having Thanksgiving dinner with my family. I mentioned that my feet were swollen. As we went around the table, the women shared their experiences during pregnancy. My cousin said she also had swollen feet. My mom didn’t. Not once did someone say, ‘oh, well, that’s one of the indicators of preeclampsia.’ None of us knew. When I became pregnant, my doctor didn’t sit me down and tell me, ‘these are things that you should look for in your pregnancy, because you are at a greater risk to experience these complications.’
That needs to change, now, especially in light of Tori’s tragic passing. Awareness is huge. Serena Williams had near-death complications during her pregnancy. Beyoncé developed preeclampsia. I hate that it takes Tori’s situation to put this back on the map and to get people to pay attention to it. But oftentimes, we need that wake-up call.
The medical community must do its part. There are so many stories of women dying who haven’t been heard. Doctors really need to hear the pain of Black women.
Luckily, there’s hope on several fronts. Congress has introduced the Momnibus Act, a package of 13 bills crafted to eliminate racial disparities in maternal health and improve outcomes across the board. California passed Momnibus legislation back in 2021. These laws make critical investments in areas like housing, nutrition, and transportation for underserved communities. Further, several pharmaceutical companies are making advances on early detection and treatment of preeclampsia.
Three gold medalists from that 4 x 100 relay team in Rio set out to become mothers. All three of us—all Black women—had serious complications. Tianna Madison has shared that she went into labor at 26 weeks and entered the hospital “with my medical advance directive AND my will.” Tori passed away. We’re dealing with a Black Maternal Health crisis. Here you have three Olympic champions, and we’re still at risk.
I would love to have another child. That’s something that I know for sure. But will I be here to raise that child? That’s a very real concern. And that’s a terrifying thing. This is America, in 2023, and Black women are dying while giving birth. It’s absurd.
I’m hopeful that things can get better. I’m hopeful that Tori, who stood on the podium at Rio, gold around her neck and sweetness in her soul, won’t die in vain.

URGENT: Congress about to pass a mass censorship and surveillance bill under the guise of "protecting children"
May 13 2023
The Senate has been in a "do something!" mode regarding children's online safety. They're using this as an excuse to push for widespread internet censorship and surveillance. The EARN IT Act, has a slimmer chance of passing with widespread opposition and some senators saying they won't vote for it. TLDR;The real threat is actually KOSA (s.1409), the Kid's Online Safety Act, which will mass censor and surveill the entire internet by giving all 50 state attorney generals the power to remove content that is "harmful" for kids, and force you to upload your govt ID online to access the internet. I'll explain how it works below the action items but it's absolutely urgent that anyone who likes having a free and open internet fights back. It's all hands on deck, because this has so much public support it's insane:
HOW TO FIGHT KOSA
CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES & THE COMMERCE COMMITTEE
This is a link to the Senate Commerce Committee phone numbers and a call script to read off of. (202) 224-3121 connects you to the congressional hotline
Opposition is getting drowned, and these upcoming weeks will be heavy for lobbying and they're using young people to do it. We NEED to show these senators that young people are actually opposed to this and don't want it.
2. Sign these petitions
Open Letter Against KOSA
Petition 1
Petition 2
Petition 3
Petition 4
Resistbot: Text PHJDYH to 50409
3. Spread the word.
The opposition is getting absolutely drowned online. Dove has nearly 100k signatures to push for KOSA. Influencers on tiktok are pushing for this without ever having read the bill. Fucking Lizzo is sponsoring it. If you have twitter, reddit, tiktok, are in any community, SPREAD THE WORD, PLEASE.
Here is a linktree with all the above petitions for easy shargin: Link to linktree
HOW KOSA WORKS
First, KOSA pressures platforms to install filters that would wipe the net of anything deemed “inappropriate” for minors. This means instructing platforms to censor. We saw how these filters impacted websites firsthand with tumblr in 2018, with not only blocking all adult content but also sfw queer content such as suicide hotlines, art archives, wiping out entire blogs because they had queer fandom related posts, etc. Places that already use content filters have restricted important information about suicide prevention and LGBTQ+ support groups. KOSA would spread this kind of censorship to every corner of the internet. And who gets to decide what is and isn't harmful for minors? Oh don't worry, just every single state attorney general and the FTC, which is appointed by the president. You know, the same attorney generals that just banned gender-affirming healthcare under the guise that it "ruins mental health" of minors. This is why the Heritage Foundation was one of the first to sponsor the bill because they can use it to censor trans content, and Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is it's co-author.
Second, KOSA would ramp up the online surveillance of all internet users by forcing websites to use age verification and parental monitoring tools. Yup, that's right. Now every single person who wants to access the internet has to upload their govt ID online to third party apps that get hacked all the time. You queer in a red state? You undocumented? You an activist? Have fun getting all your online activity and metadata attached to your govt ID.
Over 90+ human and LGBT rights groups agree that KOSA is dangerous and updates to the 2023 version won’t and can’t address the big problems with the bill. This bill has MASSIVE bipartisan support, and the authors Blumenthal and Blackburn (yes, that Blumenthal that's pushing the EARN IT Act, and who also sponsored the RESTRICT Act and SOPA/PIPA if you remember) are using the tragedy of mothers who lost their kids to online harassment and young adults who've been traumatized online to lobby for it, and got Dove the company to use a bunch of influencers to push for this under the guise it prevents eating disorders...I wish I was lying. There are already 30 co-sponsors.
It is all hands on deck. I'm dead serious when I say if this bill is passed it is the beginning if not end of the open and free internet.

Meet the Manefish, Caristius macropus
Named for their distinctive shape, macropus means large foot. This fish was observed in Monterey Bay 483 meters (1584 feet) deep in August of 2018. Manefish grow to be 35 centimeters (13 inches) long, but this individual was likely a juvenile measuring only about four centimeters (1.5 inches). They love to dine on siphonophores. Despite that, scientists think they may have a symbiotic relationship with the siphonophore Bathyphysa conifera, with the siphonophore providing shelter while the fish munches on their parasites.
Senior Research Technician in the video lab, Kyra Schlining selected this fascinating fish as one of her favorite moments because it’s so rare. MBARI has only filmed this animal twice, and Kyra was lucky enough to spot it on one of the many expeditions she’s participated in! “Spotting this little guy was particularly memorable because in over 20 years of watching deep-sea video I had never seen this animal before! We happened to be listening to “Who Can It Be Now” by Men at Work, and the fish was swimming perfectly in time to the beat. Everyone in the control room laughed until our faces hurt! We paused to watch the fish rock on until the song was over then continued on our research mission,” Kyra shared.

Can you get STDs from kissing?
Tumblr media
Someone asked us:
What STD’s/diseases are transmitted through JUST kissing? How can you prevent giving/receiving them?
Only one STD can be transmitted through regular ol’ smoochin’: oral herpes. There’s a lot of fear and misinformation floating around out there about herpes, but I promise it’s not as scary as it may sound.
There are two different, but similar, types of herpes: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 is the type that usually causes oral herpes — also known as cold sores. When someone gets herpes through kissing, it’s almost always HSV-1. Nearly two-thirds of people on the planet have HSV-1 —  that’s literally billions of people. Many get it as a kid from a peck on the lips from a family member.
One of the most important things to know is that, for almost everyone who is living with it, oral herpes is really not a big deal at all. Even though herpes stays in your body for life, the symptoms (if you have any) are harmless.  You may get small sores in or around your mouth every once in a while, but that’s pretty much the only symptom. Many people find their outbreaks get shorter and less noticeable as time goes on. Some people only have one outbreak their whole life. And sometimes people don’t show or notice any symptoms at all — in fact, most people who have herpes don’t even know it.
As far as prevention goes, the only real way to guarantee that you’ll never get herpes through kissing is to … never kiss anybody on the lips, ever. Because herpes is SO common, and many people don’t even know they have it, it’s impossible to totally eliminate your herpes risk without avoiding kissing altogether. Obviously kissing is a pretty popular activity, so the choice is up to you if the risk of cold sores is worth it.
If you already have oral herpes, the best way to prevent passing it on is to avoid lip contact with others whenever you have cold sores or think you might be getting an outbreak. This means don’t kiss anybody on the lips, don’t share eating utensils, and avoid touching the sores (if you get fluid from the sores on your hands you can spread the virus to others or to different parts of your body). It’s also possible to pass HSV-1 to someone’s genitals. So if you have a cold sore, avoid giving oral sex to anyone or use a condom or dental dam. Herpes can spread even when you don’t have sores, so there’s no surefire way to guarantee for sure that you won’t give oral herpes to someone you kiss. But try not to stress out — so many people are living with oral herpes. The odds are high that the person you’re kissing already has it, too.

Therocephalians were a group of synapsids very closely related to – or possibly even ancestral to – the lineage leading to modern mammals. They were a diverse and successful group of carnivores during the latter half of the Permian, but suffered massively during the "Great Dying" mass extinction, with only a handful of representatives making it a few million years into the Triassic.
Tetracynodon darti was one of these rare Triassic therocephalian survivors, living in what is now South Africa around 251 million years ago. Only about 25cm long (~10"), it had slender limbs and strong claws that suggest it was a scratch-digger. Its long snout was lined with pointed teeth, and it was probably an active predator hunting by snapping its jaws at fast-moving prey like insects and smaller vertebrates.
Its combination of small size, burrow-digging habits, and unspecialized diet may be the reason it scraped through the Great Dying when most of its relatives didn't – but unfortunately it seems to have been a "dead clade walking", disappearing only a short way into early Triassic deposits.
