I segreti delle persone

Vorrei non venire mai a sapere alcune cose che mi farebbero cambiare l'idea che ho di loro. Mi piacerebbe vivere in una bolla dove tutto va in un modo a me adattabile, in cui niente mi impaurisce o mette a disagio. Per niente intendo niente per davvero. Dove nessuno mi risponde in un modo che io trovo sgarbato, dove tutti sono esattamente come me li aspetto. Dove so gestire tutto - qualsiasi cosa - nel miglior modo possibile. Dove di conseguenza non soffrirei mai e nessuno mi farebbe mai del male. È una visione molto egoista, ma ci vivrei bene davvero.

Forse dalle altre persone mi aspetto troppa trasparenza e sincerità, e sono io quella sbagliata. Penso spesso di essere una persona con una mente elastica e aperta, per alcune cose credo di esserlo davvero, ma ci sono sempre delle altre cose che nella (o alla?) mia mente non vanno bene. Ho dei principi personali troppo rigidi o non ho fatto abbastanza esperienze che hanno cambiato il mio modo di vedere le cose? Per carità, non sono una persona bigotta. O almeno credo. Però alcune cose largamente diffuse nella società odierna, sia che ho avuto modo di conoscere/vivere sia che non ho ancora vissuto, non mi piacciono oppure non mi immagino nemmeno facendole. Oh, ma è semplicemente essere qualcuno con dei gusti diversi, siamo tutti diversi. Lo so, e a me sinceramente piacciono i miei gusti, ovviamente - il mio genere musicale preferito, la mia percezione della realtà oggettiva, il fatto che mi interesso di arte, e tante altre cose. Ma in questo caso sto parlando di altro, ovvero comportamenti sociali (si era capito?). E se fossi una disadattata?

È tutta una questione di "credo di essere così", e sinceramente lo odio, perché "credo" non è "essere". Quindi torno sempre a farmi questa domanda: chi sono io?

E sapete una cosa? Sono tremendamente stanca e arrabbiata di non avere mai risposta. Preferire essere una persona superficiale che non pensa a queste cose, piuttosto che stare così.

Last June marked a huge turning point in my life. I had completely lost my way - I was a shell of a human being and my understanding of my identity was completely upended - I had lost the motivation to do anything with my life - I lost the will to get out of bed, to maintain relationships, to take care of my physical and mental health.

My demons in life are anxiety, depression, and engrained learned toxic behaviors. About three years ago, a genetic test revealed that my body is unable to produce adequate serotonin and dopamine due to a missing enzyme. I started on medication and went to therapy - which was long overdue. The most powerful tool I gained was reframing (shoutout to Jen) which essentially involves identifying something that is making you feel a negative emotion and rewiring your brain to have a different reaction. It’s a long process but it is so worth it.

Last June I realized that I had to make some drastic changes right away or there were going to be severe and irreversible consequences. Since then, I have taken my degenerative joint condition seriously and lost 40 pounds. I’ve stood up for myself and rediscovered my voice. Using the principles of reframing, I have rebuilt myself into someone I am proud of. I made so much progress but I still have a long way to go.

Unfortunately, the current pandemic has triggered a resurgence of my demons. It’s been a little over six weeks since I started working from home and social distancing strictly - I’ve began to slip into old and comfortable but toxic habits. I’m at another huge turning point in my life. Previously, very small things were able to knock me off course - this worldwide pandemic will be a thorough and rigorous test of the person I’ve rebuilt myself into. For me, if I can maintain my good habits and continue to grow as a human during this time, it will mark a huge personal success.
