Fics I Enjoyed in December - DC Comics Fic Rec List

Fell headfirst back into DC Comics for the first time in years this month. Reread some old favorites and discovered some new gems!

My January DC Comics fic rec list is here!

Heart, Humble by Betty (Mature, 8k, 2005) Jack Drake deals with finding out that Tim is Robin (poorly, and then not so poorly). THEE canon-accurate Jack Drake-focused fic of all time, this is canon in my heart.

Back then, all the boys his age had hero-worshipped costumed vigilantes. Jack supposes they still do.

Exit Strategy by smilebackwards/@smilebackwards (Teen & Up, 13k, 2021) Tim plans to leave a family he thinks he was never really a part of and decides to train Damian on how to run Wayne Enterprises before he goes. Delicious angst, excellent character work, and fun Wayne Enterprises worldbuilding.

Batman needs a Robin and Batman has a Robin. Tim is just extraneous now, vestigial. He’s a bandage over a healed wound. He doesn’t know what he’s hanging on to. Or: Tim didn’t expect his exit strategy from the Batfamily to involve quite so much bonding time with Damian over Wayne Enterprises bureaucracy.

On the Downbeat by medusaceratops (Teen & Up, 2k, 2019) Bruce and Jason talk while waiting in line at a drive-thru (featuring Gotham-typical violence and husborth-typical gorgeous prose). I've always adored husborth's Star Wars fics and I'm so glad I dipped my toe into their DC works, no one's writing hits quite like husborth.

Jason has recovered his sanity, and Bruce and Jason have recovered their relationship; but there are some things that are hard to forget.

A Zoo for Canines by medusaceratops (Mature, 45k, 2019) Part 2 of Zoology; Dick and Jason try to help Bruce recover from addiction. If you're used to fanon Dick Grayson (cheery, friendly, forgiving) you will not find him here - his anger and pain is ugly, raw, and so fucking captivating.

Edit: This fic and the series has since been deleted off ao3, though Part 1 (An Aquarium of Nameless Things) is still up; DM me if you'd like to read it.

Dick, Bruce, and Jason head out to a cabin in the mountains, and they handle things about as well as they handle anything.

All the Roofs of Uncertainty by Kieron_ODuibhir/@kieron-oduibhir (General Audiences, 70k, 2015) Dick almost dies and makes Jason promise to take care of the family for him. A masterclass demonstration on how DC fic can square all the wildly divergent canon versions of Jason Todd into a single compelling character.

For all the blood on his hands, Red Hood was never just a villain. And Nightwing never gives up on family, not for good. (Or: The one where Dick bleeds a lot and Jason argues with everybody.)

The Till-Then From the Ever-Since by Kieron_ODuibhir/@kieron-oduibhir (General Audiences, 85k (WIP), 2020) Kid versions of the whole Batfamily mysteriously time travel to the future! I livetexted a friend the whole time I read this so I could yell about how amazing the character writing is; also I'm wildly impressed with how the author deftly handles tons of dialogue-heavy scenes with like 12+ guys in it without anyone going unmentioned.

It began, or seemed to begin, with Jason. Usually that would have meant something in the order of fire and explosion and probably at least one gunshot wound, but for once (as Tim said, sourly), it wasn't actually Jason's fault.

Discovered silverwhittlingknife through their galaxy brained Dick & Tim meta essays, stayed for every single line of Chapter 2 ripping out my heart and roasting it over an open flame.

You coming over is possibly the only thing that’s gonna stop me from wanting to punch your dad in the face, Dick doesn’t say. My current Christmas Day plans are 1) pace around at home, and 2) try not to obsess about what Bruce is up to, so trust me, you’ll be an improvement, Dick doesn’t say. Tim's alone on Christmas Eve. Dick finds out, and fixes it.

nerve endings by silverwhittlingknife/@silverwhittlingknife (Teen & Up, 5k (WIP), 2024) Post-Catalina Flores, Dick, Tim, and Bruce go on a (canon-accurate) cruise and dance around their open wounds. This is a glorious example of "he WOULD fucking say that", Dick's voice is so canon-accurate that the angst is even more painful i cri

It's all right, even, to have a foreign hand pressing against his skin, testing him, testing his reactions. He keeps his breathing controlled. Just Tim, damn you, it’s just Tim, don’t fuck it up. Dick's on a cruise with Bruce and Tim. And he's fine. Mostly.

Red Letter Day by silverwhittlingknife/@silverwhittlingknife (Teen & Up, 42k (WIP), 2022) Dick is sure the cryptic scribble in his agenda refers to something he's supposed to do for Damian, but he can't remember what. Mostly about Tim and Dick s l o w l y mending the post-Damian rupture in their relationship, but the whole family is here and Jason, especially, is fucking hilarious.

Dick Grayson, stressed pseudo-parent to a preteen assassin, tries to solve the case of Damian’s Mysterious Wednesday. He never expected it to help him fix his relationship with Tim, too. (… Though only after everything fell apart first.)

Gonna Be A Better One (A Thousand Miles To Your Door) by Traincat/@traincat (Teen & Up, 18k, 2011) Tim and Kon keep dating even after Jack forces Tim to retire as Robin. I reread this fic annually and every time am delighted to rediscover how funny and heartwarming and squee-inducingly kind it is, pure Timkon perfection.

In which Tim quits being Robin, Kon refuses to quit Tim and Ma Kent is full of relationship advice.

last light in a darkened room by bigdamnher0/@bigdvmnhero (Not Rated, 6k, 2024) Tim finds a distressing video of Robin!Dick and wishes that things were different. The whole fic, particularly Tim manifesting a happy ending in the bathroom, is a gorgeously crafted tragedy such that you're left kind of awed at how thoroughly massacred your heart and soul are post-read.

Tuesday morning: a video was uploaded to one of the deep web black markets. The footage, shot on those grainy vintage camcorders. But Tim knew that boy in the thumbnail; his eyes had memorized him, the heft and shape and dazzle of him, imprinting like an afterimage. Or: a brother is a witness; there's your tragedy.

2025 Book Review #12 – Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Pérez

I don’t read much in the way of non-historical nonfiction, but I am very much known as A Reader by friends and family – and so, I usually get at least one very buzzy bit of pop-nonfiction every Christmas or birthday. This was from my sister, and I opened it having never heard a word about the book or (I thought – I do in fact vaguely remember some of the campaigns she talks about organizing in the book) the author before. Having read it, the book is perfectly fine – though it feels more dated than the 2019 publication date really justifies. To a great extent it feels like a distillation of early 2010s feminist blogging and discourse, which is to say not much of it really felt new enough to be worth a whole book for me.

The book is polemic through and through, divided into sections that each advance and apply the central thesis to a different subject or area of life. That thesis is the severity – and severe impact – of what Criado Perez calls the ‘gender data gap’ – the lack of sex-disaggregated across a wide range of fields, and a general disinterest in analyzing what data there is to determine how women are impacted, or the degree to which their interests are taken into account, by any given policy of phenomenon. There’s no pretense of disinterested objectivity, and you can at points feel evidence being bent and angled just so to best suit an argument, but it barrages you with enough data points in any given chapter that I always found at least a few to be both new and compelling (something like a quarter of the book’s page count is taken up by its voluminous citations and end-notes).

The book’s main goal is convincing you that the data gap is a) real and b) bad. The former it manages to do pretty convincingly in most cases, the later it sometimes struggles to convincingly explain to the satisfaction of anyone but demographers and statisticians. Still, it does a better job than any other book or essay I can recall explaining actual specific and consequential concrete harms what it terms ‘male as default’ thinking actually causes in the world, both in terms of data gathering and in, e.g., manufacturing protective equipment or user interfaces to fit an ‘average’ user that are somewhere between inconvenient and entirely useless (if not actively dangerous) for a large fraction of women trying to use them.

Every section of the book is focused on that central thesis, but there are a lot of tangents as well – reading it really did feel like a ‘best of feminist blogging’ at points. Often in a good way, occasionally not (we can all hope and pray that some day the 2016 Democratic Primary will finally end). It all did leave it feeling oddly dated not even because it’s especially old or because the problems it discusses have all been solved (lol) but just because the particular style and aesthetic of discourse has so thoroughly fallen out of fashion.

In what could charitably be attributed to that datedness, or less charitably lead one to have dire suspicions about where the author’s politics have gone since publication, the complete absence of any mention of trans issues was striking. Like, literally complete absence – issues of race, nationality or (once or twice) sexuality were at least nodded at from time to time, even if this is not exactly a richly intersectional text, the concept of someone being transgender simply never comes up. Which is a bit disquieting as you read it, given how liberally the book uses essentializing language about sex and gender (the chapters on medicine especially often read like men and women are different species entirely). Hardly overtly hateful or anything but the book was published in 2019, it’s not like trans issues were unknown at the time – you’d think they would have been mentioned once or twice in terms of drug effects and how symptoms present if nothing else (but they do make broad and general statements about physical ability or height a bit more awkward, I suppose – maybe I should count my blessings there was no section on women’s sports).

Anyway yeah, interesting enough book. Would never have read it if I didn’t receive it as a gift, but hardly a waste of my time to. I’m not sure it’s going to convert anyone who isn’t at least a bit concept to the idea of gender-bases analysis on its own, but if you find yourself needing to do so it at least provides plenty of arguments and evidence to use.

JK's birthday 2019

Let's talk about JK's birthday in 2019.

I know it's a long time ago, but I got to thinking about it again and it just filled me with joy. And who am I to deprive you guys of some delusional joy as well? Right?

So, I think I am actually going to start from the end on this one.

JM flying half way across the world, from Paris...

to be with JK on his birthday only to have to fly out the next morning to Hawaii with Sungwoon.

And he does this all by surprising JK, who was not expecting him to be there with him, as he knew JM was in Paris, sly JM even sending him a kind of generic happy birthday message from Paris. You know, making sure JK KNOWS that he is still there on the streets of Paris all while JM was already on his way to be with him.

JM loved to tell us all about it in his Riad live (you know, the one he also told us how happy he was with the surprise birthday celebration JK arranged for him during their concert there, oh and the same one we got him eying his "manager").

Moving on.

Or perhaps moving back would be the proper way of putting it.

All of this happened on JK's birthday itself at night time (JM tells us he arrived back in SK 8-9 pm). But see, JK started off his birthday for us.

Wait. Was it for us? Or more so, was it only for us? Or was it perhaps also meant for that one person that wasn't there on that day. The one person that was in Paris, and whom JK believed was not going to be spending his birthday with him. The one person that flew half way across the world to surprise JK, and he sure did.

I know at this point I could be considered to be reaching a little bit, but hear me out here. Yes, JK was sending Army a message (well a few of them as you will see), but I do think that within those messages (this is something that those two are so good at), he was also sending another message, and it wasn't just for us. Although you could argue that in a sense it was also for us (letting us know who was on his mind at that point in time).

So here we go.

JK posts on Weverse on the eve of his birthday. This is just after midnight, specifically at 00:22 or 12:22 am KST.

This one is clearly for Army (not the one who declares himself to be Army).

Following that, JK moves on to Twitter, where he tweets twice exactly 40 minutes later. 2 tweets, one minute apart from each other.

If we look at the date as 1.9.19 then we have the 13-10 and 1-9 as well. Go figure.

Who knows... maybe if we look into it a little further we will have more facts that can show us either way.

Could definitley be meant, once again, for us. Even though he already thanks us for making him happy. But what if this time it wasn't meant specifically for us. I mean, he already thanked us in a long message only 40 minutes earlier. What if the earlier one was for us, and this one here, with the timing of the posting, was meant for a special someone else, who happened to be far away from him.

Perhaps his choice to split his posts, his thanks, was because they were meant for 2 different recipients? Perhaps, this was just like him splitting up his White day live in 2023 into 4 segments. Each one of those segments with a clear purpose and you could also say a specific audience (at least for one of those 4 the intended audience was not us).

Yeah, I know, call me deluded. Call me crazy and call me whatever, but you know, I really don't think it's that far fetched.

And even more so when within a minute he tweets again. This time he uploads his gift - a snippet of his song Decalcomania.

Captioned: "This... Please look forward to it".

{Side note, we still are even though we will never get the full song seeing that he had deleted it.}

Like seriously, how can we miss this? And nope, you can't make up this shit either.

And here we have JK, on his birthday, following his tweet only one minute earlier thanking "you" for making him happy. Who he means by "you", well that I'm sure many will assume is his fans. At this point, seeing what came before and definitely what came after, I am easily convinced that it wasn't necessarily that "you", but the "you" that was about to surprise the shit out of him later that day.

So yeah, I'm finding it hard to conclude this is all a coincidence, seeing JM himself told us it's not...

As for Decalcomania. Well, that one requires a post all of it's own.

One more thing before I go.

JK's 2019 birthday was a big one. It happened when the band were on break. When JM was using this time to travel with friends (not that they didn't spend time together, JK basically tells us that in BV4). A time with a couple of yucky dating rumors. A time of self reflection. This was a break where JK had his hand tattoos done, and surprisingly (NOT) added that very 'inconspicuous' J just above the M after his birthday.

So yeah, this here my friends, is a hill, or even more so a mountain, that I am climbing up and are pretty confidently willing to die on...

Jikook Week 49 Complete (12/11-19/11/2024)

Their 49th week in the military is now complete. Today we are looking back at this week in 2019. On the 12/11, BTS headed to Helsinki to film the Winter Package 2020.

After arriving in Helsinki, they started filming with some friendly competitions and the formation of the teams that would explore the city together later. JK was paired with Namjoon, J-Hope, Jin and Jimin were the second team and Tae and Suga were the last team.

They then set about making snow globes each of which would be gifted later to another member whose name they had drawn from a Christmas sack. Here are the finished items.

Day Two - Their second day began with a shoot in the rain. I know this series of posts is all about Jikook but can we stop a moment to appreciate the peak fineness of Kim Namjoon here?

Deep breath while energetically fanning my face & back to Jikook.

What strikes me as I watch the filming of the Winter Package is that Jikook are rarely put in the same sub-unit for photos. If you just saw the pictures without the video you would never have a clue how behind the scenes they can always be found together.

In the first shoot we see them talking about how JK is filming what eventually became GCF Helsinki.

The 2nd location was a ski resort, and there, they are accompanying each others shoots and giggling as they dance together in the snow.

This was the first time JK had ever been to a ski resort...

....but it certainly wasn't the last.

That evening they wrote letters to ARMY. After a very long day filming, and being the beautiful soul that he is JK's emotions spilled out of him as he read his own extremely heartfelt letter. Jimin, JHope and Joon tried to make him feel better first by hugging him and second by changing the focus away from him to more comic things.

Day Three The next day BTS took the ferry to Suomenlinna for another photoshoot. Jimin was stunning with his grey hair and a long red coat.

Jungkook was also pleased to have his human hot water bottle on hand to warm up his hands.

This was followed by unit shoots at the hotel & on the magical night streets of Helsinki.

Day 4 was set aside for unit activities. JK and RM went to shoot at a park by the sea. Jimin went to a local market with Jin and JHope where he bought himself a fetching new winter hat.

Their last activity was an exchange of gifts in the local park. Presents were distributed as follows: Jk to Tae, Tae to RM, RM to Jin, Jin to Jimin, Jimin to Suga, Suga to JK, JHope to JHope.

On 16/11 BTS arrived back in Seoul. A busy but enjoyable few days for everyone concerned.

So, theres now a new article from the Sun, and it’s honestly hilarious how bold they’re being. Like, they’re not even trying to sell us a love story any more. No “forever and always,” no “Louis has found The One.” Nope, it’s straight-up, “This is probably good for her career.”

I mean, at least they’re honest?

They’re literally hyping Zara for “dating up” and calling this relationship a “clever move” to help her focus on her “true passion”—music. LUCKY in love Zara McDermott has scored herself a pop prince after she was snapped on a date.

And we can reveal the secret reason she’s growing close to new man Louis Tomlinson, 33.

The Love Island beauty, who split from ex-boyfriend Sam Thompson over Christmas, was pictured with Louis at a hotel in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, just days after One Direction fans began speculating they were an item.

Though it’s still very early days, onlookers said they looked a happy couple as they giggled while drinking cocktails and eating fish and chips.

The pair stayed at the £315-a-night hotel before travelling to London the next day.

The stunning duo have all the attributes to become the new showbiz power couple, thanks to his huge global One Direction fanbase and her ties to the popular Love Island and reality TV market.

And a romance with Louis finally gives Zara, 28 - who has always dreamt of her own chart-topping music career - a firm footing in the music scene. 

Not only that, but some say Zara has seriously upgraded - from love with an E4 reality favourite to a multi-millionaire global superstar.

Finding romance with Louis follows Zara’s pattern of "dating up" - a clever move of falling for ever more successful, high-profile men. 

A source said: “Zara’s undoubtedly hot property in her own right and one of Love Island’s most successful breakout stars.

“She’s always done well to reinvent herself over the years and has been prepared to make the necessary changes to her career and personal life to take things to the next level. 

“But while her modelling and TV work have progressed, her true passion - music - has taken a bit of a back seat.

The former civil servant regularly showcases her impressive voice on social media, which is no surprise to those who tuned into Celebrity X Factor in 2019 and watched Zara perform as part of No Love Lost.

But she hasn’t been able to replicate the musical success of bandmates Wes Nelson and Samira Mighty, who are now fully focused on careers in the music business.

Wes is a bona fide solo star with a number three hit and a collaboration with Craig David, while Samira has had her music played by Radio 1 and reached the top five of the UK club chart.

Since her X Factor stint, Zara has turned her hand to making serious documentaries such as Uncovering Rape Culture and Inside Ibiza, the latter of which took a look at the dark side of the party island.

Though Louis previously stated that he wasn’t interested in anything to do with Love Island, he seems to have changed his mind after his siblings endorsed Zara.

Fans recently noticed how heartthrob Louis began following Zara - who was already Instagram friends with his twin sisters Daisy and Phoebe, 20, as well as his older sister Lottie who is a makeup artist to the stars. 

There’s even been speculation Zara’s next TV project might involve the siblings and that this is how the pair met. 

But regardless of their professional connection, the Tomlinson girls paved the way for Zara and Louis to begin dating by giving her a glowing review.

An insider said: “Louis is so famous that meeting a girl authentically on a dating app or down the local pub is practically impossible.

“He’s very close to his sisters and knows they have his best interests at heart.

“The fact they have actively given Zara their blessing says a lot about her character.

“It’s been a very difficult past few months following the death of Liam [Payne].

“He realises life is too short and Louis is determined to make 2025 a positive year for himself and live life to the full - and Zara could play a major part in that.”

Despite being worlds apart, it appears opposites do attract as Zara and Louis’ backgrounds couldn’t be more different.

Working class Doncaster lad Louis’ journey to superstardom began in 2010 when he applied to the X Factor as a solo artist.

During the process, show mogul Simon Cowell pieced together rejected hopefuls Louis, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik to create One Direction.

Though they didn’t win the series, they were its breakout stars and went on to become the biggest boyband in the world.

Just five years later, the shock departure of Zayn marked the beginning of the end of the group.

At the same time, Zara was embarking on a promising career in the civil service as Operational Officer and Correspondence Drafter for the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Two years on, as Louis released a top 10 solo track with Bebe Rexha, Zara became a Policy Advisor for the Department for Education, before going on to find her first taste of fame in the Love Island villa the following year.

During her time in Majorca, Zara had a sizzling romance with tall, dark and handsome Adam Collard, widely considered the ultimate Love Island hunk.

The relationship was short-lived in the real world though, with Adam insisting it had naturally run its course while Zara said she would always hold a special place in her heart for him.

It didn’t take long for either to move on and just months later Zara started a relationship with Made In Chelsea’s Sam Thompson, with the pair posing for loved-up selfies on social media.

However, the romance was dealt a huge blow early on after it emerged Zara had cheated on Sam with top music executive Brahim Fouradi - an associate of Simon Cowell’s - while competing on X Factor.

Formerly an International A&R Manager for Cowell’s label Syco, Zara’s ill-judged tryst with Fouradi hinted at her desire to fall for the bright lights and trappings of the music biz.

After the extraordinary success achieved last Christmas with Wonka and the one arrived in 2024 with Dune: Part 2, the star with A Complete Unknown opened to 12 million dollars in 3 days and 24 million dollars in 5 days: fourth in the ranking certainly, behind the box office kings Mufasa and Sonic 3 and Nosferatu in third place, but still a screaming number for the Searchlight Pictures label, which produced the film distributed by Disney, given that it is the best debut ever after the 2019 merger with the House of Mickey Mouse.

The Last Page

-Christmas 2014, I recieved SEVERAL sketchbooks for Christmas. I had just gotten into art, and my parents wanted to encourage that. -For whatever reason, the first day I went to draw in the first of my sketchbooks, I wrote on the cover: 12/28/14 through / / -Over the years these sketchbooks slowly filled with drawings. But at some point around 2019 or so, I attempted to pivot to digital, and something made me feel… Guilty. I resolved that I wanted to fill all of at least one size of sketchbook. For the foreseeable future, those hundreds of pages would be my project, and I would lean into traditional art until then. -It's been about half a decade since then. I've had a lot of highs and lows in life, and things have changed a lot. I've grown and improved at art a LOT, and my approach and feelings about art in general are much different than what they were all those years ago. But, at last, I made it. Page 410. Page 40 in the latest sketchbook. So I've drawn this drawing in that last page, to commemorate that project, but also to look forward to new horizons. -I plan on exploring digital art now. I want to get to know the medium. I'm actually quite sure I will be making some shitty art for a while until I figure it out! But I'm oddly excited for that prospect. I've never been content in art when I'm not pushing myself. It's going to be a new challenge and a new adventure. Is it my only option? No. I have other sketchbooks in other sizes. I could always fall back to my comfort zone. But this is what I want right now, and I can't wait to start on a new adventure.

I haven't been posting about any of the 2024 Holiday, Christmas or other seasonal Barbies in any of my new release round-up posts, because I wanted to save them up for December. So now I can't put it off any further - it's time to talk about them.

So to start off with, the 2024 Holiday Barbies - this year, a five-doll release.

The series has been ongoing, albeit with a few different names over the years, since 1988. In 1988 and 1989, this was released only as a white blonde Barbie. From 1990 onwards, Mattel began to release two dolls a year, with both a white blonde and an AA Barbie. In more recent years this has expanded even further.

The 2024 dolls in particular were moderately controversial, not because of the dolls themselves, but because of Mattel using generative AI to create the box design. The earliest I could find someone discussing this was from Stella Brown in mid July, but this was officially discussed by Mattel and Adobe in October. (Technically, actually, this article from June also discusses Mattel using generative AI in their designs: but it doesn't specifically mention the 2024 Holiday Barbie, the first Barbie about which I saw widespread press about Mattel actually using it.)

But the Holiday Barbies are far from the only seasonal Barbies Mattel has produced this year. There's also the third entrant in the much newer annual series, 12 Days of Christmas, as designed by Bill Greening.

This series is a 12 day countdown, featuring a Barbie and a number of Christmas accessories, including a wreath, candles and gingerbread cookies.

I'm always charmed by vintage-style collectors Barbies, so I can't think of much to say about this. Would I pay premium price for them? Probably not. But I like looking at them, and like that they exist.

Also the third installment in a collectors series - though this one identified as the third and final - is the Bob Mackie Holiday Angel.

I'm always a big fan of any Bob Mackie doll, as he has such a distinctive style that just shines through. My biggest quibble is Mattel coyly branding this as "Holiday", as you can see the Christmas influence all over it.

Worth noting also that while this is very specifically branded as a Bob Mackie doll, Bill Greening is credited as co-designer!

And last but not least (or at least, I think last... there's so many I'm concerned I've missed one) is the Mariah Carey Holiday Celebration doll.

For some people, Mariah Carey is practically unanimous with Christmas, so I can't very well fault them for this. Designed by Angel Kent, this doll specifically pays homage to "All I Want For Christmas Is You".
