Postcards from my past

Come on, come on take a little ride with me You just might trip over some of your own memories, eventually?

I had moved out of my parents' house 2 days after HS graduation, my 1st place was this studio in Lowell, then I decided to move up in the world and got this 2-room place in the center of Fitchburg MA

It was the summer of 1985.

One night I discovered this little door in the ceiling of a closet in the bedroom. It contained drop downstairs to the roof. As far as I could tell it was the only access to the flat roof. The building is still there, it's now part of the Fitchburg Art Museum, corner of Elm and Academy streets. Back in the 80s Elm Street in "the burg" was not the best place to live, my friends at the time nicknamed my place Nightmare on Elm.

Across the street was the Post office and bank parking lot. That's where I would park my 1960 Ford F100 Pick-up and my 1980 Suzuki GS450S. I couldn't see the lot from the two windows I had but if I went up to the roof, I could see all around the building. I spent many nights up there. I don't remember being worried that someone would steal my truck or bike, but I would often go up at night just to check out the lot, and then lay on a folding beach chair my mom gave me, many nights just lying there looking up at the stars enjoying the cool night air.

That little twin cylinder Suzuki was my 2nd motorcycle, my 1st one that I purchased myself. Bike number one was given to me as payment for helping my brother-in-law work one summer. The Suzuki was black with gold mag wheel and a little bikini fairing over the headlight. Even though it was the same size as my 1st bike (450) it felt like a completely bike, my first introduction to a cafe racer style bike.

I was 18-year-old, living on my own and riding my motorcycle as much as possible. I had a few buddies at the time that also rode, but they were also into playing golf and other activities. Slowly as the summer months went on I found myself riding more solo trips then with my buddies. Now keep in mind this was 1985, way before cell phones, gps devices and other gadgets that make exploring so much easier today.

I had paper maps and motorcycle/travel magazines and books. I also had this strong desire to just get out and find places, it's been something I've expressed in my stories in the past, its just who I am. I would load up my backpack with a bologna sandwich some Wachusett chips and a coke, strap it to the back seat and click that little black Suzuki in gear and go. It was a new way to discover and explore. I spent many days riding around central and Western MA finding roads like Mohawk Trail, Route 116 and even took that black and gold bike up Route 100 in Vermont. Then I would wander back to Fitchburg and sit up on the roof on Elm Street and fall asleep under the bright stars.

It was such an amazing summer.

Fast forward to this past weekend and the Old School is Cool 1st Sunday of the month ride to eat in West Boylston. Seeing some cool old bikes and chatting with riding buddies has become such a fun way to spend a few hours once a month. There was a 1991 CBR250RR there, a nice clean RZ350 and several Honda CB's.

Then I saw it, a postcard from my past! A 1980 GS450S, and S! You see the S version of Suzuki's GS line was pretty rare, even back in 1980 it was rare. Most GS were the Standard L models. This one wasn't the black model but that didn't matter. Somehow, I didn't see it pull in, so I wasn't sure who rode it in. I found this table of gentlemen around my age and went up and said, "who's on that GS450?" Probably a little too enthusiastically too, because the owner said, its mine and it's for sale! Want to take it for a ride was his next comment!

Talk about a time machine!

1. cute instastories: not sure when the date or time was, but this was when shane uploaded an instastory of him and ryan playing pool in chicago!! either that, or maybe it's another instastory and it's slipping my mind, regardless they post about each other a lot :D

2. shane "heart eyes" madej: ok so let's be real... heart eyes madej is just a constant at this point LSDKJF. but the moment i marked were these: the zoom screenshot was in a ww+ 103 and in the most recent season of top 5 beatdown!! the zoom one is so cute because ryan was ranting about annoying people in movie theaters and shane was just So Fond

3. the mamma mia mentions were in ww+ 116 :D

4. another weird thing in common: i recently marked it off it in this post right here about the butterfinger moments if you wanna take a quick look

5. blatant flirting on camera: THE ENTIRETY OF BERRY BOYS 2 EPISODE!!! literally that video IS SO MUCH I STG!!! i cant watch it again without collapsing into a million little piece it was JUST OOZING WITH LOVE AND FLIRTING LIKE WTH!!

6. ryan accidentally making a sexual joke about him and shane: WHEW this one was a DOOZY when this came out SLDKJF it was in ww+ 113 where ryan jokes about shane 'dominance humping' him in the office,,,, you read that correctly and yes it did happen DFGFJG here's the clip of that moment :D

7. denny's hug: it was in the top 5 beatdown chain restaurants episode in the most recent season when they BOTH had denny's as number one and they hugged :D

8. an adorable hug: we actually got FOUR hugs in the most recent season of too many spirits... it was so gay so like watch that whole season its SO worth it THE HUGS WERE TOO CUTE

9. they stare at each other like theyre disgustingly in love: ONCE AGAIN IM SCREAMING FROM THE ROOFTOPS THE! BERRY BOYS!! TWO!!! EPISODEEE!!! like literally that video is my life blood at this point that whole video was just them looking at each other like this:

10. ryan calling shane big boy: even though ryan did in one of the ghost files eps, he also did it in one of the episodes in the most recent season of too many spirits!! so watch those eps ;)

11. they go on spooky dates: *gestures at the entirety of ghost files* they also filmed alcatraz on valentines day... so thats a whole ass date if i've ever seen one LSKDJF

12. steven wishing he left watcher: ww+ 108 and 109!! if you watch those, you can so clearly tell that steven wishes he could sink into a hole so he doesnt have to see ryan and shane blatantly flirt in front of him ever again. literally he stares at the camera like he's jim from the office or gregory from abbott elementary sldfjdf

13. shane calling ryan "little guy" + hand holding: these moments were both from the powerpoint party one-off!! that video is such a gem :') while calling ryan little guy he gave him his cape (one of shane's FAVORITE things) as a blanket it was ADORABLE

14. "shut up shane" (threatening): this was from the we try spicy chicken sandwiches feat. korean englishmen video!! ryan says this when shane is sitting on the side relaxing while theyre all dying eating spicy sandwiches DFGLKG

Grande quickly returned to the studio to produce her fifth album, Thank U, Next. The title track hit airwaves in early November 2018, and another chart-topper, "7 Rings," arrived in

January 2019. The album debuted in February to strong praise, alongside a new single, "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored."

In April 2019 the 25-year-old songstress demonstrated her drawing power by becoming the youngest performer ever to headline Coachella, as well as just the fourth woman to earn the honor. Her collaborations from around this time include "Rule the World," with 2 Chainz, "Monopoly," with Victoria Monét, and "Boyfriend," with Social House. Later that year Grande joined Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey for the single "Don't Call Me Angel," from the Charlie's Angels soundtrack.

Grande continued with the collaborations into 2020, her joint effort with Justin Bieber on "Stuck With U" hitting the Billboard top spot in May before she joined Lady Gaga for "Rain on Me" later in the month.

Bombing at Dangerous Woman Tour

In 2017 Grande performed the title track for the soundtrack of the live action movie Beauty and the Beast. In February of that year, she began her Dangerous Woman tour across North America and then Europe. On May 22, 2017, tragedy struck after Grande finished a concert in Manchester, England and a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at the exit of the concert hall, killing 22 people and wounding 116, including many young adults and children. "All acts of terrorism are cowardly... but this attack stands out for its appalling sickening cowardice, deliberately targeting innocent, defenseless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives," British Prime Minister Theresa May

said after the attack.

The pop star responded to the horrific act on Twitter.

Less than a day after the attack, Grande suspended her Dangerous Woman tour. She returned to Manchester 13 days after the attack to perform a benefit concert on June 4 for the bombing victims, enlisting friends and fellow superstars to perform including Bieber, Cyrus, Katy Perry, Liam Gallagher, Chris Martin, and Pharrell Williams. Before the concert, Grande visited fans who had been injured in the attack, and she also offered 14,000 free tickets to people who had been at the May 22 concert.

Grande resumed her tour on June 7th in Paris, posting in Instagram: "First show back tonight. Thinking of our angels every step of the way. I love you with all my heart. Grateful for and incredibly proud of my band, dancers and entire crew. I love you. I love you."

The following year, the singer revealed that she was still feeling the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder from the event. "It's hard to talk about because so many people have

suffered such severe, tremendous loss," she told British Vogue. "I don't think I'll ever know how to talk about it and not cry."

Awards

Among her many accolades, Grande has won six iHeartRadio Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards and three American Music Awards. She has also earned 12 Grammy nominations and one win.

Acting

The pop diva returned to television with a guest appearance on Scream Queens in 2015, and she hit the big screen in a cameo appearance in Zoolander 2 in 2016. She also starred as Penny Pingleton, Tracy Turnblad's best friend, in NBC's Hairspray Live! in December 2016.

Grande has also become a popular host of Saturday Night Live, bringing her musical and acting talents to the show, including uncanny impersonations of fellow pop divas Britney Spears, Shakira, Rihanna, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston in a skit spoofing the streaming service Tidal.

Grande went public with her romance with her "The Way" collaborator Mac Miller in August 2016. The pair split in May 2018 after almost two years of dating. Hidden Beauty of Siniloan

October 30 year 2016, our family decided to go to a place where we can unwind. My mom is working at the Schools Division Office and guess what? They will be having a hiking at October 30 also, so we decided to come with them. Hiking with the higher officials of DepEd, it’s kinda awkward but it’s okay. I thought that I will be having a hard time socialize with them but I was wrong, they are amazing and very friendly that made our adventure more memorable.

The experience we’ve had before during and after our hiking was irreplaceable. I remember when were on our way to Siniloan, I vomited because the roadgoing to Siniloan was very curved and I feel so dizzy that time. That was an epic experience for me. When we finally reached our destination, we’ve had our orientation about the do’s and don’ts during hiking. The tour guide told us that the hiking will last for hours. I was so shocked that time, “Will I survive this?” I said to my cousins and we started ranting about it. During our hiking, I and my cousins kept on asking our tour guide, “Kuya we’ve been walking for almost five hours, when we will reach our destination? We are so damn tired”. Our tour guide was a liar, because he kept on saying that were near but the truth is were not yet near. After walking for almost six hours, finally we’ve reached our real destination, I thought it would be a normal hiking experience but I was wrong, the perfect flow of the water from the peak of the mountain turned my poker face into a very amazed one like a kid. A very beautiful twin waterfalls. I was so amazed and overwhelmed. We didn’t care how tired we were because the crystal clear water of the falls encouraged us to swim.

After that very tiring day, I realized that it’s okay to be tired because it’ll be worth it, and I realized that God’s creation is really a blast.

Self-Obituary

“If I could just turn back the time, I will correct all of my mistakes and wrong decisions in life.” As a teenager, we are known to be vulnerable, we are soft and weak that’s why we tend to do things that were not good for us and others.

I overthink, and overthinking kills my happiness. I usually think negative thoughts, which hinders my productivity because all that I think was everything that I do is a failure. I distanced myself to others and even to my parents and friends. I always feel that I’m such a disappointment to everyone. I always sleep late, staring at the ceiling and thinking of some random thoughts.

Everything’s a mess. Everything in me was a mess. I let other people come and go, I let them hurt me and leave me hanging on air. I made some quick decisions in life that brings a huge impact on what I am as of now. I am slowly dying.

Everything we do has an equivalent consequence. I nearly died not physically but emotionally. “If I could just turn back the time, I will correct all of my mistakes and wrong decisions in life.” We can’t deny the fact that the past are still ghosting us. Some will say that if they will be given a chance to change everything from the past, they will change some decisions they did; but I do believe that I will not be here today if I changed some events from the past.

Every little thing that I did before has been a great part as who I am today. Life is short and we should not be regretting about everything we did before. We make mistakes and I think it

is the stepping stone for us to achieve our goals. We grow from different aspects and I think it’s normal.

We can no longer go back to what we once were, but we can make the best of a bad situation and appreciate everything instead of regretting from the past and everything

(Ir)rational investing

Summary

Human beings are generally not rational, and as an extension of that, they often do not make sound choices.

Emotions do have a place in successful investing.

Our emotions are all-encompassing and need to be acknowledged in our investment-making decisions.

 INVESTORS (AND HUMAN BEINGS) ARE NOT ALWAYS RATIONAL

In particular, those who invest purely on how they feel emotionally about an investment, not an objective assessment by a trained analyst, a witty television personality like Jim Cramer, or even a Wall Street Journal article with a certain hell-bent opinion on your garden variety S&P 500 sector. And the fact that many of our decisions in life are based on our emotions, it can be extrapolated that many investment decisions are driven by emotions as well.  To be sure, ad nauseum, this could be seen in the late 1990's and early 2000’s when by the mere fact that a particular company had a presence on the Internet, which was still considered a new and exciting idea, meant that it was worthy of huge commitments of capital both by retail and institutional investors alike (yawn).

The psychology of rational and irrational investing lies in some concepts such as fight or flight.  Or, more specifically, our adrenal glands which help regulate our response to stress.  An awareness of the fight-flight-freeze response, and thus how our adrenaline helps and hinders our judgements, is important on so many levels, inside and outside of the daily grind of the stock market.  For example, how you deal with your temperamental ten year old not wanting to do his homework every night or trying nicely to ask your significant other to scooch over on the couch so you can stretch your legs a little more.  Both subtle, but real, examples of how we deal with our brimming emotions.  Fight or flight is an unconscious physiological reaction to stress. Basically, most of us are not always aware that we are reacting to external stimuli. At the office, whether it is someone we don’t care for walking by our desk, in the summer, an annoying yellow jacket buzzing around our head, or the dizzying daily events like seeing analysts’ reactions to disappointing guidance by Salesforce and then the stock plummeting 20 points after the session close. We react to these things in different ways, depending on the event, and depending on the person. For example, some folks do not care who walks by their desk at 9 am every morning or whether or not that person is someone they’d like to invite out for a drink after work. Others brood when a colleague of whom does not share the same political views about tax policy or climate change saunters past their cubicle with that same, annoying, shuffling walk at lunchtime every day. That is the essence of fight or flight. An event that causes an emotional disturbance due to our primal nature to save ourselves from being harmed or killed. Yep, that’s the one. When you’re watching Squawk Box one morning and Joe begins (again) to expound on why bond yields are headed upward, your fight or flight response could be: Hyperinflation! Oh geez, let me log on and sell 90% of my position in Tesla, move that into an Aggregate Bond Index fund, and put on a total return swap to hedge myself against a global depression. Is that rational? This investor doesn’t think so, but it’s all relative.

Other market watchers experience that same stimuli and react to it in different ways. It is likely due to a number of factors, including biology, nurture, and nature.  If you’ve been a trader since the 1980’s, your environment has conditioned you to experience stimuli such as this and have a certain, relatively muted, reaction. This could be said even in the event of a terrorist attack, another pandemic, or even a nuclear exchange (potentially). So, what some folks view as rational or irrational, others see it differently.  And rightly so.

Some may remember theGlobe.com which went public in November of 1998. The company was originally founded for programming the website itself. The day of the IPO the share price climbed from $9 to as high as $97, and at the end of the trading day, the company was valued at $840 million. The high valuation did not come from an objective or quantitative assessment. It was based on little more than the excitement and emotions investors had about making a quick buck based on a novel idea, with most not even knowing what the novel idea was, and to an even lesser extent, how the company was going to turn a profit. After the euphoria of the new Internet economy subsided, theGlobe.com stock eventually traded down to 10 cents a share in 2001, thus shrinking the valuation to a mere $4 million in the span of three years. Everyone knows that the dot-com bubble burst, the stock market crashed, and the S&P 500 index went negative for three consecutive calendar years from 2000 – 2002.  Conversely, who could've known the NASDAQ would rebound in 2003 and rise over 50%?  Probably more than you think.

This is not to say that factoring in emotions into investment decisions, or into life in fact, does not have its merits. In mid-2007 Apple released its first iPhone with a similar euphoria to the dot-com era.  The stock has since appreciated from a split-adjusted $5 per share to its current $116 price.  A great long term investment.  Is Apple the exception to the rule?  You could argue both sides.  Many will also remember a certain Mr. Blodget exclaiming that Amazon is on its way to $400 a share (gasp!).  That was December of 1998.  At the time, many said that would never happen and we're headed for a bubble, which we were.  However, we really couldn't have known at the time that Amazon's far reaching influence would include Wholefoods, a streaming service, and selling golden glass roses targeted towards Valentines Day.  And most know that although it took several decades, Amazon stock now trades around the $3,000 per share mark.  So, an extremely (or what seemed to be) emotionally-charged recommendation by a new analyst at the time, made many savvy long term investors a lot of money.  But not necessarily considered savvy investors at the time.  Cisco is a another dot-com survivor.  Their stock price declined 86% from its peak during the bust.  It currently trades at a 14x's multiple with a 3% dividend yield.  Hardly a high flyer.

We can agree on how important our emotions are in our personal lives.  We care deeply about our loved ones.  Some harbor distain for past and present politicians.  Depending on who you ask, is any of this productive? Or, just a plain waste of thought that lasts all of ten seconds.  

As we all know, the emotions leading up to the housing bubble and financial crisis of 2008 caused banks to lower their lending standards.  The bubble came from lenders and homebuyers thinking that real estate would always go up and the exuberance surrounding that.  If a home doubled in value in two years, would you buy it?  The resounding answer was "yes".  Same idea time and time again.  Ultimately real estate went down and the bubble burst. Many large lenders and small homeowners went bankrupt.  Moreover, the left over carnage resulting from our exuberance often goes unnoticed.  Nomadland is a recent movie that won best picture for drama at the Golden Globes.  During the opening it states that in 2011, due to a falloff in demand for sheetrock, a plant was closed in Empire, Nevada after 88 years.  Within six months, "the Empire zip code....was discontinued."  A tragedy for many of whom relied on real estate construction just to stay alive.

The reality is that most investors know they invest at the wrong times and for the wrong reasons, and still do it.  In The Behavior Gap - Simple Ways to Stop Doing Dumb Things with Money, by Carl Richards, the author states, "....friends and colleagues...know their impulses to buy and sell are dangerous."  And during market downturns, Mr. Richards opines, "It's okay to be scared, but it's a bad idea to act on your fear."  Fear may be our most important emotion when it comes to affecting our investing mindset.  How else do you account for such extreme market volatility?  Certainly part can be attributed to fear.  Fear is a byproduct of our fight-flight-freeze response.  Fear was essential to our ancestors for survival purposes.  Faced with a rattlesnake, our fear caused us to do something, instantaneously, preserve our lives, and perpetuate the human species.  A survival mechanism.  But is it still useful?  When it comes to investing, not so much.

So what can our emotions teach us about investing? If we're too exuberant, we can cause bubbles. If we are too fearful, we may burst bubbles.  Maybe too many of us watch too much CNBC (fact), and our emotions may get intensified sitting on the couch as helpless spectators.

The question for most of us? Where are our emotions taking us now?  Are we bubbling up at this very moment?  When is this bubble coming and what will be the focus?  Government debt?  Student loan debt?  According to some, maybe it's a Tesla bubble bursting.  The more we understand our own emotions and how they affect our daily functioning, the better our investing decisions will be.  Keep in mind that we're all different and many folks have the utmost control over their emotions.  Consequently, those who can do that will earn higher incremental returns and live a longer, healthier life, with more fruitful finances. -Neil

On the rest of the tops the tonnage limit was also 35 tons, but those who fought there was only allowed to use one non-Orcus Mech (in addition to all their Orcuses) Trouble here was, the Orcus is perhaps the least numerous Mech model in use in the Galaxy. Just like the AxeBot, it have a better elite Mech (Keradon) in the same tonnage bracket. And the 35 ton Craftsmen Zadok is in many ways better as well. Heck, even the regular 35 ton Holmes have a better precision. So for a lot of Commanders, this would be a PointMech event where they just had their best sub-40 tonner present. For some reason I still have an Orcus tucked away on the loft of the hangar, perhaps there are some packrat genes involved? But in this case, perhaps those genes would give me a leg up on the opposition? I was still busy in both the Circuits and the Waves. So instead of stripping the formation to just the legal Mechs for the climb,  said Orcus and an escorting Novum was incorporated into the main formation. A quick trip to K4 and a couple strikes saw us grab the top, and I left the crew there to hold at all costs and get me some footage of the action. But fatigue overtook me, and I nodded off. It was not until much later, after the event had finished, that I finally woke up and got back to the arena. The weekend saw two very different box office pairings to differing demographics as the rough sex "Fifty Shades Freed" ended the trilogy on a high along with family-friendly "Peter Rabbit." Oddly enough, the one that wound up getting controversy was "Peter Rabbit" over its food allergy treatment. Sony Pictures had to issue an apology after backlash hit when some felt it treated people suffering from food allergies too lightly. The scene in the film shows the villainous Mr. McGregor, who suffers a blackberry allergy, being pelted by Peter Rabbit and his furry friends with the fruit. One berry fires into McGregor’s mouth and he begins to go into anaphylactic shock before stabbing himself with an EpiPen. Some parents who saw the movie were outraged by the scene suggesting it depicts bullying of someone with a food allergy. In a joint statement to the New York Times, Sony Pictures and the filmmakers said: “Food allergies are a serious issue. Our film should not have made light of Peter Rabbit’s archnemesis, Mr. McGregor, being allergic to blackberries, even in a cartoonish, slapstick way. Luka Doncic’s Mavericks have the best offense in NBA history*

Good morning. Let’s basketball. Ricky O’Donnell here filling in for Ghostface Ziller the rest of the week.

Luka Doncic has been the biggest story in the NBA through the first 20 percent of the season. Part of that is because the 20-year-old is putting up historic individual numbers that have positioned him as an MVP front-runner. The other part is because his Dallas Mavericks just keep winning and are scoring at obscene levels as they do it.

The Mavs won their fifth straight game on Sunday evening, beating the Houston Rockets 137-123. Doncic was as brilliant as ever, finishing with 41 points, 10 assists, six rebounds, and a decisive W over James Harden in the head-to-head matchup. Luka didn’t do it all himself, though. It’s time to recognize that the team around him looks pretty good, too.

Tim Hardaway Jr. went off for 31 points. Kristaps Porzingis, who has struggled for much of the year, chipped in one of his better games in a Mavs uniform with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Add in Delon Wright, Seth Curry, Jalen Brunson, Maxi Kleber, and Dwight Powell, and it feels like someone different is stepping up to finish off all the open looks Doncic creates every game.

Dallas is No. 1 in offensive efficiency by a mile right now, scoring 117.4 points per 100 possessions via NBA.com. That’s nearly four points better than the second best offense (... the Wizards!) and nearly six points better than Houston’s No. 3 offense. Last year’s Warriors set the record for offensive efficiency with 115 points per 100 possessions. Yes, that means Luka’s Mavs are currently the best offense in NBA history, or at least since 1973 when basketball-reference started tracking. (The basketball-reference numbers differ slightly from NBA.com but still have the Mavs as the best ever)

In their last three games, the Mavericks have dropped 142 points, 143 points, and 137 points respectively. This group is a far cry from the on-paper talent of prime Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, but with Luka at the controls, the Mavs are scoring even more efficiently, at least through the first fifth of the season. This team looks for real.

The NBA is talking with the players’ union and broadcast partners about significant schedule changes that include an early-season tournament, a play-in tournament for the final two postseason seeds in each conference, and the reseeding of matchups in the conference finals of the playoffs, per Woj and Zach Lowe. Ziller writes that this is pro-active and interesting, but there are more than a few issues to sort out first.

Drank’s Postseason Rotation Preference

“PLAYOFFS?!?” you scream, in the most Jim Mora-way possible. “WE’RE TALKING ABOUT PLAYOFFS?!?”

Case in point:

LITERALLY PLAYOFFS. LITERALLY GUMBY.

The playoffs are literally two weeks away, and while the Dodgers have been doing whatever they can to sabotage their playoff aspirations, all media sources inform Drank that the Dodgers have already clinched a playoff spot, and are merely a single win or an Arizona loss away from bypassing the play-in game, to the actual tournament of pain. One more win, and the Dodgers’ odds of winning a World Series skyrockets to 12.5%, which is about where it would have been had the Dodgers won 116 games anyway.

I guess we do actually have to talk about playoffs! And now that the Dodgers are pretty much in this tournament of pain, they might as well try to actually figure out the best method to getting wins, preferably at the rate they were getting wins in June and July, and not the last 4 weeks.

To begin, let’s focus on the starting rotation. The rotation had 94 qualified candidates before the year, and then injuries dwindled that number down to roughly 8. Let’s start with the obvious.

GAME 1: CLAYTON KERSHAW

Literally Clayton Kershaw. Need I say more?

Okay, literally Clayton Kershaw not hanging sliders up in the zone to Aaron Altherr. That Kershaw is a bad Kershaw, that really needs to avoid showing up in the postseason, or I might ban the internet and its hot takes from my house forever.

The good news is that, relatively speaking, Kershaw is pretty much the best pitcher in baseball again. And he won’t be pitching on 3-days rest. That’s a start.

GAME 2: YU DARVISH

Darvish has been maddeningly inconsistent since being acquired on August 1st, which at least is better than being Mattingly consistent. His fastball touches 97, his breaking pitches have wicked movement that at least will play as unhittable, and he will lose control of all of his pitches at random times.

Basically, since becoming a Dodger, Darvish has showcased why he has both A) the highest K/9 rate in baseball history, and B) why the Marlins could tag him for 9 runs in a 3-inning span.

The good news is that these regular season results don’t really mean anything. The other good news is that Darvish has the ability to put up a damn fine box line score even if he has no semblance of control with all of his pitches (see his last start in San Francisco). The bad news is that I really, really want good Yu Darvish to show up in October, and I have no idea if that is how it will actually play out.

Be good, Yu.

GAME 3: RICH HILL

Rich Hill is like the left-handed Yu Darvish, in that when his stuff is on point, he has the ability to take a no-hitter into the 9th inning... and sometimes even the 10th inning, before the season then spirals out of control. But unlike Darvish, Hill pretty much relies on 2 pitches in 2 parts of the zone. When it is working, it is an absolute thing of beauty.

In 2017, Hill has had lapses where he loses control, where he might walk 2 or 3 batters in an inning or give up consecutive home runs. When he is on, though, he is arguably the best #3 starter in a field full of really good #3 starters. Going to need that deception to play well, and going to need Hill to play well with the majority of his playoff starts likely to be on the road.

GAME 4: HYUN-JIN RYU

Just like we thought, another dominant left-handed... wait a minute, this guy didn’t make the All-Star team!

You might be wondering why the actual 4th best starter isn’t listed as the 4th best starter. I’ll get to that reasoning in a second. For now, note that Ryu has been perfectly fine as a starting pitcher, who has a .310 OBP against the first two times through the order. Expect 4 or 5 innings out of Ryu, then move onto the next piece.

Yes, I understand what Dave Roberts said. HEAR ME OUT, DAVE.

SUPER HYBRID RELIEVER LEFTY PERSON THAT HAS BECOME VERY VALUABLE FOR POSTSEASON TEAMS: ALEX WOOD

There it is!! Alex Wood--who led baseball in ERA for much of the season, who had elite strikeout rates for most of 2017 compared to the other elites in the game, who even got the anti-NERD crowd excited with his 15-3 record--should come out of the bullpen.

But not in any bad way at all. This is actually quite a prestigious role, if you have only paid attention to how postseason baseball has played out the last few years.

Let us start with the role Andrew Miller played in the 2016 MLB playoffs, when it became cool to be a reliever who could come in during the 5th or 6th inning instead of the 9th. The ability to put out potential fires and massive threats in games where every out and every run is absolutely crucial, is absolutely crucial. Terry Francona and Andrew Miller proved exactly why the save stat is the dumbest fucking stat of all time, because Miller really earned the save (and really, the win on several occasions) by coming in for 2 innings during the middle of a baseball game and shutting down the opposing team’s best hitters, at a moment where the game was pretty much on the line.

That role proved to be so effective, that the Dodgers elected to spend $80 million on a relief pitcher, which I would have never guessed would have ever happened with this front office. That role even proved to be so effective, that the Dodgers were rumored to be dangling some valuable pieces of the farm to bring in another potential dominant lefty reliever in Zach Britton--who was not even good enough to pitch in the 2016 AL wild card game!!

And the carry-over is obvious, as teams are already focusing on implementing that strategy for October. The Yankees, for instance, have like 7 different elite relievers that they can use at any time, and not just have to rely on Chapman metaphorically lodging bullets into garage walls in the 9th inning. The Red Sox have discussed using once-dominant-but-now-injured-a-lot lefty David Price in this role as well. Andrew Miller also figures to be Andrew Miller again come October.

So, if you are the Dodgers, why not Alex Wood?

Mind you, this is not for a loogy position--not when Tony Watson and Tony Cingrani have pitched as well as they have since being acquired. I am talking about using Alex Wood for 1-2 innings in 3 or 4 games of each series.

When Wood first moved to the bullpen to start the year, his fastball velocity touched 93. To pair that with his improved backdoor slider, opposing hitters had no chance. Then, as Alex Wood moved back into the rotation and kept his dominant form, his innings piled up again. Then, as his innings piled up, well...

You can clearly see from this handy chart and screengrab that as time has gone on, Alex Wood’s pitches have gotten less fast. That is a problem, coinciding with a few lackluster starts recently, which has contributed a little bit to the team’s terrifying downfall.

The point is, maybe it would not be the worst idea to put Alex Wood in the bullpen, where maybe you can find that uptick in velocity once again. If you assume Wood pitches 1-2 innings in relief in 3 games of the NLDS, then what you are really banking on is that Wood pitches 4-6 innings with the 93mph fastball, as opposed to 5-6 innings with the 91mph fastball. You are spreading out Wood’s value across the middle innings for multiple games, as opposed to pitting all of Wood’s value into 1 game, as unconventional as that sounds.

Oh, and in case you have not been paying attention to the last 4 weeks, middle relief has been sort of a clusterfuck tire fire. Maybe, in those games, relying on Wood to pitch the 6th and 7th innings before handing the ball to Morrow and Jansen is not the worst idea.

Of course, this does not mean anything if Wood can’t get his fastball velocity back up. But, in Drank’s opinion, it is the best, most wisest solution. Particularly also made by the fact that Ryu and Kenta Maeda have been perfectly acceptable rotation figures this season, despite their recent struggles as well.

Also, like Andrew Miller, Alex Wood is left-handed. Their first names both start with the letter A. They are pretty much clones of each other.

So, maybe, consider that.

What is Garrett? Garrett designs and manufacturers turbochargers for OEMs and the aftermarket, along with electric-boosting and connected-vehicle technologies. The company has 13 engineering facilities and 13 factories around the world, and it has local presences in many fast-growing countries, including India and China, helping situate it close to its major customers, the OEMs.

While Garrett has been under the Honeywell umbrella for years, many investors may not know that much about the company. Here are three things that you should know as the company is spun off.

Turbochargers aren’t just for accelerating quickly — they actually improve engine function in a number of ways, including improving drivability and increasing power. But they’re also useful for decreasing CO2 emissions and boosting fuel economy, two key areas where consumers and governments are demanding improvements. Those demands are only going to grow in the future, putting Garrett in the driver’s seat.

Such demands have helped Garrett put up 7% organic sales growth in the first half of 2018, and should help the company continue to grow over the next half-decade.

Management anticipates sales growth of 4%-6% through 2022. This revenue visibility is helped by the long lead times required to become established as a supplier, and the fact that OEMs set up only one supplier per engine because of the highly customized nature of turbochargers — so getting “locked in” to a product is important, since it provides a more defensible position.

Moreover, Garrett also benefits from favorable tailwinds from the growth of cars and the increasing use of turbochargers, even taking advantage of the sharp rise of the electric hybrid segment.

Despite its attractive operating characteristics, especially for an incumbent provider, Garrett has a mixed bag in terms of its financials. The good news: The company has negative operating working capital. In other words, its suppliers provide the working capital needed to run Garrett’s business. That’s a very attractive feature.

For most businesses, growth requires investing more money into working capital. In Garrett’s case, however, suppliers more than offset its investments in inventory and accounts receivable. For the first half of 2018 Garrett had net negative working capital of $425 million.

EBITDA of $513 million over the last four quarters, Garrett’s debt-to-EBITDA is a bit too high at 3.25 times. So one of the company’s priorities over the next couple of years is to move gross debt down to around two times EBITDA. That puts a buyback or dividend on the back burner for now.” data-reactid=”110″>On the negative side, Garrett has a fairly high level of debt coming out of the spinoff. The company is taking out $1.66 billion in debt, and kicking up a dividend of $1.63 billion to Honeywell. With consolidated EBITDA of $513 million over the last four quarters, Garrett’s debt-to-EBITDA is a bit too high at 3.25 times. So one of the company’s priorities over the next couple of years is to move gross debt down to around two times EBITDA. That puts a buyback or dividend on the back burner for now.

Here’s a nasty little surprise, though: Garrett must make quarterly payments to Honeywell as part of Honeywell’s ongoing asbestos liability. Garrett currently carries a liability of $1.32 billion on its books, representing 90% of Honeywell’s asbestos obligation.

It’s important to note, though, that while Garrett is footing much of the bill, the legal liability remains with Honeywell. The two companies have a 30-year agreement, and Garrett will not have to pay more than $175 million in any one year.

While this is a surprise, it’s useful to think of it as another expense on Garrett’s income statement. However, these payments will not be tax-deductible. So that’s another wrinkle in the situation.

Still, for the moment, the when-issued stock is very thinly traded, and whether it goes up or down in the short term has a lot more to do with post-spinoff trading dynamics than the company’s long-term success.
