my guess was the "no cash for ass" line was mostly about the girl surprising him with requesting money (but actually requesting his soul) after they had already agreed to a date

I tend to agree. I just love the idea that his relationship to this is beautifully complicated, like. Mostly that he's positive and supportive but also that he's streetwise and experienced enough to be cognizant of the dark underbelly that exists.

You can almost feel the tension in everyone’s body when Steve says the line above. Then Danny walks away and Steve watches him. The look on Steve’s face gets me every time. It’s almost worse that Danny seems to be quietly worried about Steve. There’s no yelling, no Danny calling Steve a Neanderthal. Just Danny walking away because Steve is going on a suicide mission. And Steve knows he fucked up. But that’s not the biggest problem on his plate right now.
