Hello Wil,
Just wanted to check in on you, because I'm reasonably certain (though I could definitely be misremembering) that you exist in the same time zone as me - US West Coast - and I noticed that your last few posts have been throughout the night.
Maybe that's normal for you, I don't know, I don't usually pay much attention to time stamps, or maybe you're traveling (in which case, I hope you are having a lovely time).
But if not, and you have been awake through this night, I hope that you are doing okay. And if you aren't now - I'm so sorry if that's true - that you will be doing okay soon.
-Ardin
You're kind to ask. I've always been a late night person. When I was a kid, it was because the only time I was allowed to be me was when my parents were asleep. It was late at night that I could listen to my music, read my books, and not worry about my dad barging in to be cruel to me, or my mom barging in to dump a bunch of emotional bullshit on me. Over the years, my circadian rhythm adapted to what is called Revenge Sleep Procrastination in Japan.
I joke that I am tired all the time, except between 10pm and 3am. It's always been like that, but as I have entered middle age, it's not a joke as much as it is my reality.
I also use my queue to post every 69 minutes (nice) and there are usually around 420 posts (nice) waiting, so if I were to fall into the backrooms right now, there would still be a steady stream of Debbie Harry posts for at least a week.

https://www.gbnews.com/royal/kate-middleton-prince-louis-birthday-picture-royal-family-news
“The couple eventually posted a new photograph in the afternoon, despite having traditionally provided it to the press under an embargo the day before.”
I’m new to the whole process of how the birthday pictures are shared, but from the online articles (especially the above one), it seems to me that the Wales’ circumvented providing it directly to the press this time and only published the picture themselves on social media. If so, good for them!
Hopefully, the media has FAFO’d. And GB News may be salty, but they have no one to blame but themselves.
So how the birthday photos work is that usually the afternoon before a birthday (or a milestone anniversary or a new baby photo), William and Kate will send the picture out to the newspapers/photo agencies/media organizations with an embargo not to release before a certain time. This "certain time" has traditionally been around 10pm London time, which is usually when the UK morning newspapers "go to bed" - i.e., the layout/content is finalized and sent to the printers and the electronic copies are published to the internet/posted on social media.
Because of the time difference (10pm London is 5pm East Coast and 2pm West Coast), American social media tends to make the new pictures go viral on our side of the internet while the rest of the world is asleep. This is why you may have seen some American blogs cheering on Monday afternoon - the UK papers went to print without new photos of Louis for his birthday on the Tuesday front pages.
So then on the day of the actual birthday/anniversary, Kensington Palace will post their "Happy birthday to Kiddo" message with their original photo first thing in the morning to coincide with the locals waking up/reading their morning news. A few hours later, usually around their lunchtime/early afternoon, Kensington Palace does a "thank you for the happy messages" post with a second photo.
What happened this week with Louis's birthday is that Kensingon Palace did not provide the newspapers, photo agencies, media orgs with a new photo of Louis for his birthday. According to Rebecca English, this is because William and Kate didn't want to share photos because either a) it felt hypocritical after spending January through March begging for privacy or b) how the press treated them over the Mother's Day photo and Kate's video message.
But something happened, William and Kate changed their minds about not sharing the photo and decided to post one anyway. They posted the new photo straight to their own social media first, before then sending it out to the news and media organizations.
Why they changed their minds, we don't know. Maybe their office got too many phone calls about it. Maybe their staff reported on all the social media tributes. Maybe there was a ton of mail/birthday cards delivered for Louis. We know that they probably intended to share new photos. You don't have a photoshoot with young kids for the heck of it. My theory is they did the photos, someone got cold feet about sharing photos after what happened last month, and they were on the fence about it until they saw the genuine love, support, and appreciation for Louis (and the family) from the general public.
I'd like to see this being the new MO going forward - pictures released exclusively to their social media first, then circulated to the media (or forcing the media to use the social media copy exclusively). We won't really know till Charlotte's birthday next week if this was a one-off or truly a change in how they handle the media.
On that note...I do kinda feel like we might be getting an anniversary picture this year. With Kate's health issues, they may feel like an anniversary picture would comfort people who are worried about her, and it may be how they thank the public for their support and well wishes. Of course, the caveat being that Kate has felt well enough to be photographed/appear on camera.

It’s very weird to me that they are having it start at 10pm locally. I understand wanting it as a night race, but mostly all west coast sports start at like 7 or 8pm local time. It seems unnecessarily late especially for the latest US timezone and when it will start getting dark between 4 and 5pm
I think the idea was to aim for the cars to run late at night due to the Nevada heat during the day. But also, F1 cars racing at night under the Vegas lights? Gotta sell that glam ✨ aesthetic ✨

time zones are ridiculous!! on Wednesday at 7pm I have a meeting with a guy in Singapore and it's 10am Thursday for him. Also on Wednesday I have a meeting at 10pm (crying screaming throwing up) with the Australia people and it's 4pm Thursday for them. The reason the meeting is at a terrible time for me is so someone in Europe can also join. Guessing it will be Thursday morning for them, probably the same time of day as the Singapore guy from three hours earlier. in my other research group our winter break time zones will include US west coast, US east coast, UK, and India. when i said time has lost all meaning to me since i crossed the date line i meant it.

TIME ZONES ARE CONFUSING TO ME, WHEN DID DEBUT APPRECIATION NIGHT START? WHAT TIMME ARE PEOPLE ONLINE
debut appreciation started at 10pm est, which is also when bingo night and selfie nights kick off, but i have been informed it’s a really shitty time for europeans
i’ve noticed tumblr tends to kick off around 8:30pm est and then stays pretty active until 2:30pm est
the translations that i have memorized are:
england is five hours ahead(? you add 5 to the number like if it’s 3est it’s 8 england time) of est?
west coast is 3 hours behind est (3est is noon pst)

I'm gonna make a tourist ad for Australia real quick
Here's some irl experience scale
The lower dot is Melbourne (me!) and the higher one is Brisbane (my grandparents!). I have driven up to brissie many times in my life. Probably ten times? If you pack the car Friday morning and leave after work and just immediately gun it north you can get past the Victorian border by like 10pm. Get up early and drive absolutely all day on Saturday can pass all of NSW. Talking like 7am to 8pm driving only. Sleep as close to a NSW/QL border town as possible and, again, drive first thing in the morning. Can usually get to my grandmother's house 90 min north of Brisbane for lunch.
But if you wanted to stop off? And see things? I'd give that distance a week alone and then wouldn't say I'd seen Australia. That's only half the east coast. Highlights on that route for me (as experienced on either separate trips or slower ones) in particular are parks observatory, Sydney rocks, Australia zoo, ACT, Blue mountains, Namadji, Byron bay spas, surfing, and the hume highway's planet installation. Those are just my picks, it's not everything
That's skipping everything inland of the road, btw. So you haven't even seen those states. You've barely scratched Vic and QL. You missed Victoria's great ocean road and Dandenong ranges and wine region and the Grampians and the Otways and the silo tour! The silos are a day and night on their own. You also didn't see the city, that's a whole day or two. Melbourne's got the pokey little galleries and bars, you gotta put time aside to explore, not just hit the main attractions like the ngv or melb museum. Oh and Silverton, with the mad max cars! Gotta see Silverton.
I live in Vic so I know more of the cool stuff here, but it is everywhere. And did you really see Australia if you didn't go to the top end of Queensland and eye a fern distrustfully in case it's a cassowary? Or get spooked by a croc story in Darwin?
Okay, here's a tourist map I found. Try and spot Melbourne and Brisbane then apply the drive length of that to the whole country. Even if you just do the coastal, it's over a week non stop. And that's not seeing the country, that's passing it by. And there's stuff in the middle you gotta do! And fucking Tasmania! MOMA my beloved.
And you can't have the country and skip western Aus. Like, are you really gonna skip whale spotting and wine region and quokka island around Perth? And there's stuff in-between the east and west coasts!
Like Adelaide and Darwin and Uluru and Coober Pedy, I love Coober Pedy. Town built into an old mine in fuck off nowhere? All the hotels are underground. It's awesome. Opals everywhere. And you're only a day or so drive from Uluru (seven hours one way)
And like, you just gotta love the long drive. Two days of open red sand and desert shrub then suddenly you hit wine region? Beautiful, breathtaking, how can this exist on one island?
I'm gonna be one of those retirees that takes six months off in a caravan to drive the country. I'm looking forward to it very much
In their defence, a lot of it is sand.

I went to Europe ages ago. I was still a teenager and spent nearly all that time in England, a few days in Paris. In London, we stayed at a hostel with some real characters. They were overbooked and stuck us in a staff room, with a Canadian named Duane, a girl from Minnesota named Melody who was only squatting there, and Patsy, a 35 year old Irish drug dealer who was nominally the maintenance man, but really after 10pm, kids would get lost in the labyrinthine hallway upstairs while we slept and bang on the door all hours of the night shouting “PATSY! PATSY! Have you got any X?” I would wake up in the middle of the night to him and his supplier cutting and snorting drugs on my bottom bunk. Or the whole bed shaking like a washing machine with me riding on top and some girl whispering “Patsy… Patsy… Ohh Patsy…” down below followed minutes later by thick drafts of hash which would get into our clothes and follow us as Dan and I walked around seeing the sights. We saw on a map a place called Land’s End, on the south western edge of the island, so in the interest of milder cartographical extremities than our bunkmates might have found interest in, we went out west to see it. Taking busses to cities here and there, walking into pubs, asking where the nearest place to stay might be, sleeping together on a bed in some house on a random street in a foreign country. We got to Penzance and travelled along the coast. I forgot where we slept that night, I remember breakfast. I’m forgetting the entire trip through Oxford, Salisbury, Avebury, and all that. Well, we decided to hike the rest of the way through Cornwall to Land’s End in Sennen. It was excellent to see the country that way. Giant yellow hills in gray fog, lightly drizzling over us, our packs eating our shoulders, then the end of the world, with its silly gift shop and the most beautiful cliffs, red green and calcium white. Not as beautiful as California, I should say. That is unmatched in my experience. But extraordinary. Avebury is so much better than Stonehenge and its phony headphone tours and roped off monoliths. Walking all day through farm yards, touching the silver stones, following the trail in the hush of the sunset. Actual witchcraft. We walked around the garden of the Salisbury Cathedral, I swear the whole town was closed that day. Just the hoot of an owl as we approached. I don’t think I had ever seen Dan so superstitious. Oxford College itself had an interesting yellow atmosphere about it that separated it from the town, where we stayed with an older woman who might have been half-muppet, some kind of Jim Henson creation. We got shouted at by a homeless man and talked to him for a while to calm him down. I was always making a fool of myself on the road there. I remember that morning on the bus in Penzance opening a plastic package of muesli and accidentally tearing through the entire side sending granola everywhere. Dan couldn’t even look at me.
