Cruella, the story of a puppy slaughter

As the puppies killer said: “I am a woman. Hear me roar” — Yiks. No. Please. No.

An analysis of CRUELLA, Disney's next mistake.

The main problem with this movie is that it would be highly difficult to make people empathize with a woman who kindnapp puppies to slaughter and skin them for a new coat.

It's not a story about a witch who make a sleeping curse on a newborn baby because she wasn't invited to her baptism. It was easier building a story of love betrayed behind Angelina Jolie's Maleficent, while is not as easy explaining why Cruella is so obsessed with killing domestic animals for their fur. Dogs are human's best friends and people hate when dogs are in danger in the movies. People will never empathize with Cruella as they did with Maleficent.

However, the actress chosed to play Cruella de Vil in Cruella is Emma Stone. I was very surprised when I discovered she was her who played Baroness Abigail Masham in The Favourite, because I thought it was Margot Robbie (Why the hell there are so many Hollywood actress that looks perfectly alike?). I loved to hate Emma Stone's character in that movie, but here we have Disney. Dislikable characters as protagonist are not their mark.

Critics said that this version of Cruella de Vil is a mixture of Ocean Eleven and The Devil Wears Prada (well, wasn't the 1996 live action too a mixture between that two movies?).

Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. Emma Stone's character is a lowly department store worker, that befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson, wearing her deceased mother’s locket, which was lost at the Baroness’ estate the night she died. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Some elements to notice here, that we will see more in details later: Baroness von Hellman is clearly a noble woman of foreign origins (German, maybe? Or Dutch), in her name there is the word “Hell” that we probably remember for Cruella's family estate, “Hell Hall”. Cruella too seems to come from a foreign noble family, in her surname we see the predicate of nobility (de - Baroness' one is von). This is curious, but I don't know how relevant would be in the plot.

Cruella director Craig Gillespie previously directed I, Tonya, which followed figure skater Tonya Harding. While not excusing Harding’s actions, that film takes a comedic look at her life and audiences could see how her struggles informed the deeply flawed person she became. You never root for Tonya Harding though. But Cruella is a Disney movie and it is not Disney’s way to do that kind of thing or to have an unlikable protagonist, they are selling as a new-wave feminist icon.

Let's see more of Cruella's evil in her main rapresentation in media:

1 - The book

Not a lot of persons know it, but Disney's classic 101 Dalmatians of 1961 was based on a book of the same name written by British author Dodie Smith in 1956. It was originally serialized in Woman's Day, an American magazine, as The Great Dog Robbery, and details the adventures of two dalmatians named Pongo and Missis as they rescue their puppies from a fur farm.

In this book is firstly intruduced Cruella De Vil. She is a former classmate of Mrs. Dearly, the dogs owner, who was a menacing school girl and was expelled for drinking ink (let's remeber this detail, because it's important).

Cruella is depicted as a pampered and glamorous London heiress, the last of her prosperous and notorious family, who appears wealthy but is in fact heavily in debt. She is married to a furrier, whose first name is never mentioned, even by Cruella, and it appears she married him solely due to his occupation rather than because she loved him. When Mrs. Dearly asks Cruella what her married name is, Cruella retorts that—in contrast to the usual patriarchal custom—she has made her husband adopt her surname as his own, in an effort to carry on her family name. She and her husband have no children. Cruella is portrayed as the tyrannical figure in the marriage, and her husband as a meek, subservient man who seldom speaks and obeys his wife entirely. He supplies Cruella with extravagances, such as the white mink cloak she often wears with skin-tight satin gowns and ropes of jewels in contrasting colours, such as a black dress with ropes of pearls, or a green dress with ropes of rubies.

At a dinner at Cruella's London house, the Dearly couple noticed Cruella's odd eatings behavior: all her food is strangely-coloured and tastes strongly of pepper. When Mr. Dearly comments she might find her mink cloak too warm for a summer's evening, Cruella laughs that she never finds anything too warm; she constantly stokes a roaring fire and complains of being cold despite the unbearable heat.

This details of Cruella's life behavior are very symbolical: coldness in literature is associated with death and corpse (in the brithis poem, The Unquiet Grave, the dead-sweetheart of the protagonist has “clay-cold lips”), while pepper in popular superstition has lot of meaning.

In her name and appearance we can found also a reference to the Goddess Hela, from which came the word Hell, who is described as half young and half old. She is the queen of Hell, were lies the persons who die for an old age and not gloriously in battle.

Peppers are considered the “demon’s spice” in southern Italy. However, in Naples you can find red horns talismans, which resembles a hot pepper, used for personal protection, or to protect your car or your house from the evil eye and gossipers. But the twisted talisman is meant to represent a phallus, not a hot pepper, so the strength and fertility associated with the symbol are associated with good luck.

Another one says that you should never hand a hot pepper directly to a friend—superstition has it that is will bring discord into the friendship.

So, Cruella is always cold as a corpse and loves eating the “devil's spice”, that brings discord if it was served to a friend. This is very significant and seems to anticipate more scaring informations Dodie Smith served to us.

However, in the book Cruella has white Persian cat, but she admits she detests and only keeps because of the cat's value. The cat hates Cruella, longing to avenge her many litters of kittens (all of which Cruella drowned).

Cruella de Vil is selfish, she doesn't like animals at all and abuses them with no sign of emotion. The abuse of animals is part of so-called homicidal triad or Macdonald triad. This theory in criminology refers to the idea that there are three signs that can indicate whether someone will grow up to be a serial killer or other kind of violent criminal: being cruel or abusive to animals, especially pets; setting fire to objects or otherwise committing minor acts of arson; regularly wetting the bed during childhood or teenage years.

This is quite interesting, because Dodie Smith in the book gives us some very disturbing details about de Vil family: in Chapter 10, titled “What They Saw From The Folly”, Pongo and his mate Missis travel to Suffolk at the ancestral home of the de Vils, Hell Hall. Here, they meet Colonel, an old Shepard dog, who tells them a very scary story:

“Your husband has asked me to tell him the history of Hell Hall. Now come and lie down.��

Pongo was as anxious to see the puppies as Missis was, but he knew they should sleep first, so he coaxed her to lie down. The Colonel pulled the straw round both of them.

“It’s chilly in here—not that I feel it,” he said. Then he sent the cat to start collecting food for the next meal, and began to talk in his rumbling voice.

This was the story he told.

Hell Hall had once been an ordinary farmhouse named Hill Hall—it had been built by a farmer named Hill. It was about two hundred years old, the same age as the farm where the Sheepdog and the cat lived.

“The two houses are quite a bit alike,” said the Colonel, “only our place is painted white and well cared for. I remember Hell Hall before it was painted black and it really wasn’t bad at all.”

The farmer named Hill had got into debt and sold Hill Hall to an ancestor of Cruella de Vil’s, who liked its lonely position on the wild heath. He intended to pull the farmhouse down and build himself a fantastic house which was to be a mixture of a castle and a cathedral,and had begun by building the surrounding the wall and the Folly.

(The Colonel had heard all this while visiting the Vicarage.)

Once the wall, with its heavy iron gates, was finished, strange rumours began to spread. Villagers crossing the heath at night heard screams and wild laughter. Were there prisoners behind the prison-like wall?

People began to count their children carefully.

“Some of the stories—Well, I shan’t tell you just as you’re falling asleep,” said the Colonel. “I didn’t hear them at the Vicarage. But I will tell you something—because it won’t upset you as it naturally upset the villagers. It was said that this de Vil fellow had a long tail. I didn’t hear that at the Vicarage, either.”

Missis had taken in very little of this and was now fast asleep, but Pongo was keenly interested.

“By this time,” the Colonel went on, “people were calling the place Hell Hall, and the de Vil chap plain devil. The end came when the men from several villages arrived one night with lighted torches, prepared to break open the gates and burn the farmhouse down. But as they approached the gates a terrific thunderstorm began and put the torches out. Then the gates burst open—seemingly of their own accord—and out came de Vil, driving a coach and four. And the story is that lightning was coming not from the skies but from de Vil—blue forked lightning. All the men ran away screaming and never came back. And neither did de Vil. The house stood empty for thirty years. Then someone rented it. It’s been rented again and again, but no one ever stays.”

“And it still belongs to the de Vil family?” asked Pongo.

“There’s only Cruella de Vil left of the family now.

Even if it is not written openly, we can easily understand that Cruella de Vil ancestor was a serial killer: he murdered and tortured people in his house. He was a dangerous, insane guy with a tail and seems also he can summon storms to save his own life.

Remeber that “Cruella de Vil” is a pun of the words “cruel” and “devil”, an allusion that is emphasized by having her Suffolk manor nicknamed “Hell Hall”, but in the book this is more evident because of the fact that Cruella's ancestor seemed to be a real life demon. Above I made a reference to the predicate of nobility, that is present in Cruella's surname too. Title of Nobility may be composed by two parts: the Title itself (Baron, Viscount, Count, Marquess, Duke or Prince) followed by its Predicate (of, de, von) which indicates a geographic or allegoric name. So, we have Baroness (title) + von. In Cruella's case we have only “de”, so we can deduce she is part of a lower grade untitled nobility from a foreign State, maybe France: de Vil, could be a contraction for “de Ville”. “Ville” in middle age French means farm or village, while in modern day French means city or town. And Cruella's is deeply connected to a country house in Suffolk that was nicknamed “Hell House”.

Couriosly, this detail would ring a bell, expecially if you are familiar with classic Gothic literature. So, you probably have noticed that the surname “de Vil” is also a literary allusion to Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), in which the realty firm Mitchell, Sons & Candy write a letter to Lord Godalming, informing him that the purchaser of a house in Piccadilly, London is “a foreign nobleman, Count De Ville” (Chapter 20, Jonathan Harker's Journal, LETTER, MITCHELL, SONS & CANDY TO LORD GODALMING) and also in Chapter 26, where Jonathan Harker and Van Helsing, during their hunt for Count Dracula's new hut, they met a jew lawyer that have received the order from a “Mr de Ville from London” to deliver a mysterious box in a castle in the nearby. Count De Ville, however, proves to be an alias for Count Dracula himself and the mysterious box is his coffin. More relevant could be the fact that Dracula has the power to summon storms too.

This reference to vampire could also be found in the 1961 version of 101 Dalmatians, in the songs Roger writes when Cruella make her first appearance on the screen: in the last lines of the song, Cruella is called “this vampire bat, this inhuman beast”.

So, as we have seen Cruella's coldness in the previous lines, her sunerme that sounds a lot like Dracula's alias, her mysterious ancestor with a tail, supernatural powers and a passion for torture people, there are so many details that allow us to think she is more than a common human woman.

2 - 1961 Adaptation

Keeping in mind what we said above about Cruella's peculiarities in the book, it's not a surprise observing that Cruella's appearence in the 1961 version of 101 Dalmatians is very unique, if compared to the other characters: Cruella looks more like a skeleton than a human being: she is very underweight, boney, with high cheek bones and a very pale - white - skin tone that make contrast with the pink one of other characters, and her face has a huge resemblance with a skull and the green smoke that surrounded her while she holds her cigarette add a supernatural atmosphere at her look.

Taking a look way back into the 1950’s, we first get a glimpse of green associated with evil and magical powers in Sleeping Beauty (1959), where the color green is continuously used as a harbinger for Maleficent's evil: the green glow around her castle, the curse of the spinning wheel illuminates a bright green, even in her dragon form she breathes an acid-green flame! So why green? Green can mean a number of things: it can be associated with growth, healing and nature, but it can also carry some negative connotations.

Obviously, Disney is not trying to conjoin those qualities with their most evil characters, so we take a look at the negative aspects this color carries: greed, envy, and sickness. All of these traits fall under the character of Disney villains. In Cruella’s case, after having her offer to buy the puppies denied, she is filled with resentment (envy) towards the Dearly, ultimately exacting her desperate need to have a new Dalmatian fur coat (greed) by becoming obsessed (sickness) with kindapping and murdering puppies.

Enter Cruella and her companion – the color red, that is rapresented by her car. The association of color red to Cruella's car emphasize her personality traits.

Even if though and brave heroes are supposed to wear red capes, red is more commonly featured in character designs for villains. Red, as well as green, is often associated both with heroic and villainous qualities.

Red is violence, anger, and aggression, and it frequently indicates danger. Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination, as well as passion, desire, and love. Dark red is associated with vigor, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath. Red is associated with hell and the devil.

There’s no denying that a character like Captain Hook from Peter Pan or Jafar from Aladdin are determined, bloody, but anger influence their characters designs as well.

In the book Cruella's car was black and white, like her hair, but producers choose red as color to evidence Cruella's personal evil: wrath, danger, blood and also determination. The inspiration for Cruella's car comes from 1936 Alvis Speed 20 SD Drophead Coupe and 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royale 'Weinberger Cabriolet'.

This is relevant because in a lot of scenes Cruella is drawn driving in a dangerous way: she is pretty reckless when it comes to driving said car, such as making drifting turns in the streets, driving extremely fast in snowy conditions, and sometimes running other cars off the road. However, she always blames a near accident on whoever is on the receiving side of the accident. The car is shown to be very resistant to damage. We can easily say that Cruella's car is her alter ego, her driving style says a lot of her personality: she is reckless, she doesn't care of others, she is determined into chasing her schemes and she would do everything to obtain what she want. Her inability to control her car is reflective of her mental state. Her obsessive desire to acquire the Dalmatian puppies heightens as she leers over her steering wheel, speeds through city streets and bulldozes through fences in her single-minded pursuit. As the animated film neared its climax, her driving became all the more reckless, causing imminent harm to those around her, but also her appearance looks more inhuman than ever: her eyes are red and completely insane, her hairs looks more uncontrolled, messy, they fly around her head, like Medusa's snake in head. Her unchombed hair testifies that Cruella doesn't care anymore or her look. One driver yells out “Crazy woman driver!” when she nearly pushes him off a cliff.

This is important because, Cruella surname could be a reference to Dodie Smith's old car, it is also believed that the inspiration for the name began in 1939 when Dodie Smith purchased a new Rolls-Royce 25/30 "Sedanca de Ville" motorcar in which she and her pet Dalmatian "Pongo" frequently travelled, which also formed the basis of the cartoon imagery of Cruella's own motorcar.

At the beginning of the 101 Dalmatians II the car is shown to be largely intact, albeit heavily damaged, from the wreck at the end of the first film. The car falls apart as Cruella drives away after being denied entry to a furrier's shop, until there is nothing left but the engine, the frame and a seat. It is not seen again after she abandons it. This reflects the changes of Cruella's fortune and life: she looks desperate, her life is ruined, she isn't allowed to enter in luxury fur shops anymore due to being on probation for her previous crimes. Now she is not a rich and fashionable heiress, she is a well-know dogs thief and no-one wants to have something to do with her, plus at the radio there is a popular song of hate about her going on. The car is devasted because Cruella is devasted.

However, the first we see of Cruella is her silhouette perfectly framed by the front door glass window. The first time, the door area is a little on the green side, in the next shot of the same BG it is almost earthly brown. The important thing here is, that the door is in the shadow and the outside is brighter than the inside, yet parts of the walls are in a faint pool of light. In spite of all that, Cruella is not seen in silhouette (darker than the surrounding background area) but brighter than anything else.

As if to make way for her, yellowish green cigarette smoke precedes her in bullying Anita and Pongo. It’s interesting how Roger’s white (therefore not nasty) smoke never bothers anybody during the film. We see immediately that Cruella is into fashion (from the car to the cigarette) and not humble about it. She must have money to fulfil her selfish needs. She is not the family type and therefore no good by the other characters’ standards.

Like the red of her shoes and gloves, acid green is completely absent from the rest of the films color palette.

It’s very interesting how Cruella is always in the pool of light pushing everybody else out of it. From the moment she arrives, Anita is pushed to the side, making her reside on the sofa (her favourite spot).

Perdi is promptly hiding when the car arrives, because she (as Anita’s dog) knew her already. Upon seeing her car (“must be Cruella, your dearly devoted old school mate”), Roger closes the curtains to visually shut her out (the lighting doesn’t change, but we feel more protected). After Roger has started singing, he too hides, leaving Pongo and Anita to deal with the excentric woman. It always works to generate anticipation of a character’s awfulness by having other characters hide at the sound of his/her name.

Roger, a music composer in this film, has written a score but cannot find the lyrics and their guest, Cruella de Vil, will be his inspiration. We observe the “sinister connotations” that this aristocratic French surname has (devil/evil).

The feeling of impending threat will increase in the following stanzas. In the context of familiar use, with second person verb plural, Cruella is described as the supreme spirit of evil (“At first, you think Cruella is a devil”), but the verbs of perception (realize, see, watch,) a metonymy (her kind of eyes) and a symbol (underneath a rock = infernal place, hell) make us perceive the sinister feelings even more powerfully.

After two common nouns denoting either diabolic qualities par excellence, antonomasia, (“this vampire bat” = Dracula), or sadistic nature (“this inhuman beast”) and “She is like a spider waiting for the...kill”, which anticipates her wicked intention to kill the puppies.

Special effects of the second entrance of Cruella are quite immaginative: during the lightning flash for a few frames only, we see Cruella as a complete silhouette while the BG is just darkened in. Apart from that, Cruella is again completely in the light (the fixed lighting from before has been adjusted to spotlight the backdoor). Her beige coat stands out even more against the blue surroundings.

Now the wall behind her is a lot darker than before. There is simply no pool of light anymore. Again Cruella looks more like a walking fur coat, as her grey skin color doesn’t contrast too well with the rest. These three frames show some strong lines of action by the way. The red lining is mostly concealed now.

It’s also interesting how the beige clothed puppy is much less saturated than before, because again, Cruella is dominating everything.

"Fifteen. Fifteen puppies! How marvelous! How marvelous! How perfectly... Ugh! Oh, the Devil take it, They're mongrels! No spots! No spots at all! What a horrid little white rat!"

A famous part of Cruella's behavior is her not being that smart: she is dumber than a dog (ok, Pongo and Perdi are way smarter than real life dogs) and also doesn't know anything about puppies. This is an element present also in Dodie Smith's book, in fact also in the book, Cruella had a very disgusted reaction seeing for the first time the new-born puppies of Pongo and Perdi. Did she really expect Roger and Anita to sell them after saying the things she did? Yes, yes. Roger and Anita know her and they aren't surprise at her reaction, but Cruella is a woman that isn't used to be given a no as an answer, she obtains always what she wants and she doesn't see any problem at making to Roger a very generous offer for the puppies.

“Blast this pen! Blast this wretched, wretched pen!”

Cruella doesn't have a lot of patience. For anything. That includes a pen not working right away so she can write a check for Roger and Anita to purchase the newborn puppies. Plus, while trying to get the pen to work, she gets ink on Roger and Pongo, further irritating the two.

Now we see that the inside of Cruella’s purse is also red. Her head is always in the shadow part of the BG. Her beige coat makes her look much stronger than Roger who with his bleak green and brown is closer in value to the background. But Roger has to face her this time. With the ink spots, he even looks like a human equivalent of Pongo as he is reluctantly articulating what Pongo would say to Cruella, could he speak. Like so many times in this movie, Roger seems almost paralyzed.

After Cruella has taken in that Roger indeed is not going to sell the puppies (“that’s final”) she gets really angry and completely loses her temper. Look at her coat and her hair. The red lining flashes while tearing the cheque.

“Why you horrid man...You....You...Alright, keep the little beasts for all I care! Do what you like with them! Drown them!”, Cruella screams to Roger, when he refused to accept her check and sold the puppies to her.

Considering what Cruella ultimately planned to do with the puppies, the above quote was a major red flag. Roger did good, standing up to her and declaring she'd never get any one of the puppies. Cruella, however, clearly isn't used to not getting what she wants. Her reaction to not getting what she wanted was quite dark and disturbing in itself. This scene is relevant, because we see how Roger is the strong character of the couple, while Anita seems to be too kind and waek willing, and Cruella knew it, that's because she tried to push Anita into sell the puppies, when Roger denied the first time. However, Roger imposed his willing and won the first round, so Cruella rushed off the house in anger and Anita sweetly thanked her husband to protect the puppies. I wonder what would happen if it was only Anita, when Cruella tried to buy the puppies.

After that, Cruella smashes the door off screen and Pongo is barking at her until lightning strikes again. After that, Roger and Anita never see the “Devil woman” in person again.

All in all, her second appearance can be seen as an escalation of the first. She not only gets more out of control (she’s contradicted by Roger that acts as Pongo alter ego, while Perdi is totally absent in this scene, because she knows that Anita cannot protect her) but also breaks the glass (foreshadowing the many broken windows of Hell Hall). Colorwise, her fur is contrasting the blue stronger than the brown of the living room. Her appearance in front of a black plane is also more dramatic than in front of the pale grey outside. This time she didn’t even ring the bell before she entered.

However, back there were the 60s and people were more conservative than nowadays and Cruella personalities, compared with the two other female models hase some worrisome issues:

1 - Evil Indipent woman Vs happy housewife in late 50s - early 60s. Cruella's 1961 version is not married, is financially independent and unabashedly assertive. At the onset of the second wave feminist movement, as women’s rights began to challenge male authority, de Vil’s most empowering traits appear in an unhinged form. She seems all the more threatening when compared to the 1950s femininity of unassuming and newly married housewife Anita Dearly, who welcomes a large litter of Dalmatian puppies into her home. The American society in the 1950’s was mainly founded on the ideology of the housewife, shaped by magazines and other media targeted to women. After the Second World War, marriage was the main goal for girls; family life was their major aspiration, and the manifestation of a “perfect” existence, but many of whom lead a lonely and restricted life. Therefore, their fight for autonomy started. The role of women in American society changed dramatically in the 1960s. At the beginning of the decade, women were portrayed on television and in advertisements as happy homemakers, secretaries, teachers, and nurses. Women who did not get married were depicted as unattractive, unfortunate spinsters, and those who asserted themselves were dismissed as nagging shrews. Women were to strive for beauty, elegance, marriage, children, and a well-run home. Meanwhile, popular culture ignored the fact that all women did not fit the mold that tradition had proscribed for them. Many were challenged by Betty Friedan's 1963 book, “The Feminine Mystique”, which described the frustration of many women who were unfulfilled by their efforts to conform to society's ideal of femininity, living for their husbands and children, and neglecting their own ambitions and dreams. “My only true love, darling. I live for furs. I worship furs! After all, is there a woman in all this wretched world who doesn't?”, says Cruella to her high school friend Anita, who is now a newly married woman and soon-to-be mother too. Cruella's one true love in life is fur. She never goes anywhere without her precious fur coat and matching handbag. Cruella often makes fun of Anita's lifestyle; she doesn't understand Anita's appreciation and love for the simple things in life. She doesn't need furs to make her happy, and that's something Cruella could never relate to. Yes, it's quite sad that the only thing Cruella really loved was fur, but screenplayers wants to be sure that viewers understand well that it was she - Cruella - that was missing out on some of the greatest parts of life, not Anita (who is a wife and soon a mother too). Nowdays we, compared to the 1950s or 1960s, know that people can pursue their happiness in different ways: being parents or not, in a couple or not, with friends or with a partner, or also alone, in a career or in a family. But this, back at the time, wasn't something people understand well yet.

2 - Smoking is a bad habit - for women. Cruella is a woman who smokes. Roger too smokes, but his smoke doesn't bother anyone, his smoke is white and socially acceptable, while Cruella's one is green and nasty. This is largely explained by the fact that in 1950 or 1960 youngest adult generation were born at a time when smoking was still predominantly a male habit, and were in early adulthood when a majority of men and increasing numbers of women smoked, before the health risks of smoking were widely publicized. This generation was in late childhood and early adolescence during the Second World War (1936 - 1945) when male smoking was almost ubiquitous and women began to smoke openly in large numbers, but smoking at the time were considered a more manly behavior.

3 - Crazy woman driver stereotype. Cruella recalls the stereotype of bad woman driver. Perhaps because depictions of crazy or even evil women behind the wheel are deeply rooted in American culture. And they are not innocent. In fact, for more than a century, such depictions have been a way to undermine women’s push for social and political equality. In the 1920s driving was a way for wealthy women to asset their autonomy from their husbands and families and in the 1950 and early 1960, women drivers were not that common as nowadays.

So, yet the first Cruella had a little shape of feminism in her roots: she was portrayed like a negative model of femininity, in contrast between of the positive one of Anita.

She was a cruel, indipent not-married woman, who murder puppies and drives very bad. Feminism, or at least women's indipendency, was seen in a very negative way by late 50s and early 60s Hollywood producers, screenplayers and drawyers. And, well, yes, they were all guys.

How someone could appreciate indipendency and determination in a woman who wants to turn human's best friends into fur coats? No one could. We were thought to love dogs, we grew up with dogs in our houses, they were our game companions. Dogs are not food, dogs and domestic animals are not what we accept as fur in our coats. They are friends. It's not surprising that most of Western states banished the use of cat and dogs fur in industry, as well as the importation and commercialization of goods made of cats and dogs fur. In our mindset there isn't any comprehensive attitude toward animal abusers. We cannot be comprehensive with Cruella de Vil, even if we are more closed to her than Anita's perfect 1950s life.

(im gonna go with the stance she nearly made it through the mirror. Also since we dont know what Divus’s UM might be I went with the power “Once Upon A Time” version of Cruella De Vil had ie control over beasts and humans. The dalmatians are called Dylan and Dolly after the characters of the same names from 101 Dalmation Street) (Yandere! Divus Crewel x Fem! S/o)

(Y/n) had been so close, oh so very close to getting home. She’d been carefully planning this for months, getting the supplies she needed from the headmaster, and studying the spells necessary with her friends Ace and Deuce. All while trying to hide what she was doing from the probing eye of Professor Divus Crewel. For reasons she couldn't fathom, the man had grown attached to her. Honestly, she wouldn't have minded being a teacher’s pet, if only there wasn’t such a heavy emphasis on the pet part of that term of endearment. She could not ignore the way he looked at her anymore, like he owned her, like she was an animal. (Y/n) refused to live like this any longer than she had to, and tonight she’d hoped she would be free at last. Too bad that wasn’t gonna happen. Instead just as she was about to take a step through the magic mirror something bit down on her leg and dragged her back. When she looked to see what the thing was, it turned out to be a dalmatian. The first spotted dog was soon joined by a second who bit down on her other leg and the pair began dragging the girl away from the room of mirrors. The dogs only let go of (Y/n) once they’d returned to their master’s side. “Where’d you think you were going Puppy?” Divus said with a smirk, a tendril of green smoke wafting from his lips as he used his Unique Magic to command the dalmatians to sit at his feet and await further instruction. “You wouldn't try to leave this school without giving me any warning now, would you? Only a naughty puppy would try to run away from her master so crudely” he added bending down to grab (Y/n)’s chin. “I wasn’t doing anything wrong Professor Crewel” (Y/n) squeaked trying to turn her head so she wouldn't inhale the green mist pouring from the man’s lips with every breath he let out. The smoke was heavy in the air, possessing a weird fragrance that made it more and more irresistible the longer it was breathed in. “I swear I wasn’t trying to leave the school promise” the girl added frantically, her breathing quicking with panic. “Now, now puppy. Lying to your master will only make things worse. I’ve been lenient with you so far, allowing you more free will than what is safe for such a vulnerable young thing like yourself. Alas, I don't think I can tolerate that any longer, until you learn some obedience I’m afraid you’ll have about as much free will as dear Dolly and Dylan here” Divus said, the two dalmatians at his feet lifting their heads as their names were spoken. (Y/n) opened her mouth to protest, plead, anything! Only to have Divus suddenly kiss her and transfer mouthfuls of the green mist into her system. The girl went limp in the man’s grip and it was easy enough for the male to sling her over one shoulder and carry her off to his chambers for some disciplining. The dalmatians jumped to their feet following after their master with wagging tails… THE END

I think our worlds are connected in some way, you see, the great seven are fictional characters in my world and they're known as "Disney villains", also, not to mention that literally every single one of you looks like a disney character. For example, professor Crewel is pretty much the male and younger version of Cruella De Vil from "101 dalmatian street", the dorm leaders beside Kalim are awfully familiar to the great seven too, for Kalim's case he's more similar to the sultan from "Aladdin the king of thieves", Jamil is similar to Jafar, aka the sorcerer of the sand which is also from the same movie as the sultan, Azul is the male counterpart of Ursula, the "benevolet" sea witch, even the twins!! They're obvious human(more or less) of Ursula's eels Flotsam and Jetsam! I could go on hours with this. I even met Mickey Mouse! Which is also a character that belongs to Disney, the company that owns the villains in my world. I personally think that the company must have something to do with it. How's it goin' my dedicated pups? The 5th Anniversary celebrations may be over, but in case some of you have been curious, I'll give you a special behind-the-scenes look on the 5th Anniversary group-shot that me and my pet human's sibling @AstralBlocks had worked on together and break down how it all shaped up to the final product!

Let's dive right in, shall we?👀🔍

Here are Astral's sketches of 101DS' background/recurring characters that I drew off of. They basically made them as a base outline for me to use as a reference, and I offered to color each of them separately. Of course, there are several versions where Astral drew a few characters together in one group, with the Royal Corgi family being the prime example. Though not all of them were completely sketched, I was able to the make out the outlines to draw over and color in.

From the refs that Astral had sent me, Astralblocks had done a spectacular job in doing justice to the designs for animals in the show, making sure they reflect 101 Dalmatian Street's charming art-style, including a few like the ducks and the rapping pigeon.

Since not many of the background characters barely had any screentime or speaking role, there were a few instances I gave Astral the creative liberty to pose the characters and expressions the way they see them to give them more dimension and personality based off of their designs. (Taking the three cats from "The Waow of Miaow for example")

There were also several times where some BG characters would come out as inaccurate due to a lack of refs I have given them. With the Afghan hound and the little grey-blue, puzzle patterned pup as a few examples. Despite that though, fixing them up wasn't much of a problem for me!

Speaking of which... Now we go through that characters that didn't make the cut in the final poster. Like the bats from "Dotty Dancing" and the Talent and the gray pup that I mentioned. There were several of them that didn't make the cut due to time constraints and the rush to get it done. Though, with the exception of Mr. Fuzzy's girlfriend Lucy. I had COMPLETELY forgotten to add her to the poster by the time I had finished it. (The one that I did color in)⬇️⬇️

And that's all I have to say about the BG character sketches! All in all, Astralblocks is a true natural in talent when it comes to sketches.

I'm still grateful for them for lending me a paw in working on this project together in time for the show's 5th anniversary! Hope you dedicated pups enjoyed the behind-the-scenes of this poster! Until next time Peace!✌️

One of my OCs, Brock, actually has quite the backstory, based off of a nightmare I had. So when he was 18, he was sent to live with his grandmother for a while, and his grandmother was really abusive. Also living there at the time was bis baby cousin, Vanissa. It all culminated when the grandmother’s boyfriend (I told you, it was a very nonsense dream) broke into the house in the middle of the day with a gun and threatened to shoot them. He ended up shooting Vanissa, who I think I made 6. This experience had a very negative effect on Brock, and he actually tried committing suicide, but his parents found out and immediately took him out of the house and got him the necessary help he needs, so he’s fine now.

Speaking of Brock, he actually used to be a Sparklecare OC! I grew quite attached to him and didn’t want him to experience present-tense trauma, so I made him a regular OC.

I made an OC, Inky, a Tasmanian Tiger with multicolored markings, to be nothing but a mascot for a fictional pen brand.

I have made 48 Bugsnax OCs. I don’t even use them, the game just really boosted my creative drive for a few months. Two months, to be exact. I made 42 characters in two months and made 6 more 2 months later.

Brock has 6 siblings. 2 boys, 4 girls. I never updated their designs from their Sparklecare phase though.

A lot of my personal OCs are just humanized versions of an OC I got really attached to. Brock used to be a Sparklecare OC, one used to be an Uglydolls OC (I made six of those, by the way), another was a random character from a few test drawings of exaggerated body types, and another was a kittydog OC that I decided to make half-human.

Also, the now-humanized UD OC has 8 Squirmles (worm on a string) pets that are actual animals.

I made a 101 Dalmatian Street OC based off of Trolls World Tour since I watched shortly before making her. She’s rock themed and has marking that look like a mask and fingerless gloves, despite being a Dalmatian. Her name is Dexi.

I have an alarming amount of one-shot OC that I made just to get them in a physical form. I honestly don’t see much personal use for them and I don’t know if anyone else has that problem too.

I have counted, and I think so far I made about 283 OCs. And I’m not even sure if I counted correctly.

Sorry if these are a bit lackluster, I don’t put much that info into my OCs unless I’m really attached to them

A surprise ask game! List 10 facts about your ocs and then tag 5 other people to learn things about theirs!

(I actually got this a little while back but forgot about it, since I’m getting tagged a lot this week, figured might as well do this one too now lmao)

I decided to pick 5 characters with 2 facts about each, as I have so many lol

1. Yoruga’s name, Yoruga Shirushi, is not his real name, but the name he chose for himself after leaving his birth family behind.

2. Yoruga is basically his bestie Kiyoi’s wingman, often helping him with his crush issues (and he does do the same with the said crush who’s also his friend lol. It’s basically that Toothless meme of hiccup being in the bush like “You’re doing great buddy!”)

3. Azul, (one of my older characters I haven’t drawn that much lately, I’ve abandoned my boy oh no :(( ) used to be single and not meant to have a love interest, but then I realized his dynamic with Diojas (another oc of mine) was far more fun than shipping Diojas with Azul’s brother, so I changed it lol

4. Azul has changed the least visually from his first appearance out of all of my characters; I only really upgraded his outfit somewhat.

5. Toshiko’s voice claim is Rukia from bleach; their personalities are somewhat alike, with both appearing serious at first glance, but also having this kind of awkward side to them.

6. Toshiko is often VERY embarrassed by her little half-sister Akiko’s shenanigans (they share the same dad but have different mums, their parents had/have a polyamorous pan relationship, which means the mums were a couple too, not just a case of a dude with two wives), though she does actually genuinely appreciate her efforts in trying to bond with her.

7. Jurou’s relationship with his mother was strained at first (this is a recent story update for his BG story I’ve decided to make, as the current one needs too much suspension of disbelief in some aspects) and he can still sometimes be a bit harsh towards her.

8. Designing him was super hard, but once I got it he became one of my favorite characters lmao, Spider Dad is just too much fun to draw

9. Belladonna is probably my most well-rounded villains so far, lot of her actions/reasoning feels fairly believable and human, namely bad choices/bad stuff humans can do willingly. It all also ties well to her personality and feels consistent without too much need for suspension of disbelief; I still need to work on the other ones more in comparison. (this is all stuff only in her bio so far, but I do want to draw some things pertaining to it eventually)

10. Belladonna is one of the few villain characters in this “story” that if this was a real manga/comic, she would not get redeemed in the end, namely because I feel her character doesn’t require it. Unlike some others, all the bad things coming her way were caused fully by her, by her own knowing actions, by her refusal to take responsibility, and even now she doesn’t necessarily regret them. (not saying you can’t redeem characters like this, but I personally wouldn’t feel the need to do that for her in my own story lol)

The service is billed as a mix of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, “Star Wars” and National Geographic, and while the other brands are great, they weren’t locked away in a “vault” for years on end when you just wanted a VHS copy of “Beauty and the Beast” for Christmas. One of the biggest benefits of the service is access to Disney’s theatrical animated films, along with the campy collection of Disney Channel Original Movies, series and a few gems from the 20th Century Fox studio that Disney acquired this year.

Disney+ includes more than 7,500 episodes of television and 500 movies, which might make choosing just one childhood classic difficult. Animated treasures

‘Hercules’

Before you dive into the heavy hitters from Disney animation (and we have several on this list), take a moment to enjoy one of the most underrated films from the “Disney Renaissance” of the 1990s: “Hercules.” The powers and adventures of the Greek gods are brought to life in the film, which uses a gospel and jazz score and original music to bring it all back down to Earth. Definitely a hero, not a zero.

‘Aladdin’

Please, we beg you, ignore this year’s Will Smith remake of this story and stick to the one with a brilliant voice performance from Robin Williams. There are few times in animated films where the vocals and animation feed off each other in such wonderful ways, and it’s infinitely better than a guy covered in blue makeup.

‘The Little Mermaid’

While you’re forgetting “Aladdin,” forget ABC’s “live” version of “Mermaid,” too. The original 1989 film, in all its hand-drawn glory, is all you need to be “part of that world” (get it?). The music, by the legendary team of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, is among the best Disney’s ever produced, and it’s worth revisiting just to hear the songs in context again.

‘101 Dalmatians’

One of the movies that feels like it was sealed in the vault forever (in part because of Glenn Close’s later live-action films), “Dalmatians” is a veritable explosion of puppy love and good boys and girls. The film has a great villain and an even better villain song. If Cruella de Vil doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will.

‘The Aristocats’

“Dalmatians” is for dog people, and “Aristocats” covers cat people. One of the more under-the-radar Disney films, “Aristocats” is sleek and sweet with a great soundtrack. Released in 1970, it’s a little dated (though not as dated as other Disney films), but still full of cool cats.

Live-action films that aren’t remakes

‘Escape to Witch Mountain’ (1975)

No offense to Dwayne Johnson, but there’s no beating the original version of this paranormal tale about two mysterious orphan siblings with powers and a mad millionaire chasing after them. The retro special effects and action sequences just make the the whole film better.

‘Heavyweights’

Though not a Disney Channel original, this Ben Stiller comedy aired on the network so often in the 2000s you wouldn’t be remiss for thinking it was. The sometimes problematic story of young boys sent to a torturous fat camp run by a psychotic fitness instructor (Stiller) is a celebration of individuality and adolescence. That Stiller makes an incredibly hilarious bad guy is simply gravy.

Millennial DCOM Favorites

‘Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century’

There is, and never will be, a better Disney Channel Original Movie than this campy sci-fi classic, about a girl raised on a space station who faces a tough transition to life on Earth. The film portrays a version of the 21st century with a distinctly 1990s flair (all the cars are Volkswagen Beetles), its own catchphrase (Zeedus Lapidus!) and a boy-band tune that you won’t get out of your head anytime soon (“Supernova Girl”).

‘Smart House’

This 1999 movie beat “Black Mirror” in depicting technology as dangerous instead of empowering. Before we had Alexa or Siri, this Ryan Merriman DCOM asked, “what if Alexa could cook and had separation anxiety?” Come for the dance parties, stay for Katey Sagal (“Sons of Anarchy”) as the human embodiment of the Smart House.

‘Quints’

Millennial fans of Disney Channel may know Kimberly J. Brown better from the “Halloweentown” films, but “Quints” is just as worthy a use of her Disney charm. The movie follows 14-year-old Jamie (Brown), who hates being an only child until her mom gives birth to (you guessed it) quintuplets. Diaper humor is mixed with some surprisingly deep insights about forging an identity as a kid, and what you want and need from your parents.
