Why You Should Include Books You Read Your Kids in Your 2024 Reading Goals
If you are like me you make a reading goal every year, in the hopes of finishing your backlog. Then life happens and before you know it the year is almost up and you are nowhere near done. It happens and it’s okay. This year I plan on trying something a little different, instead of lowering my reading goal I’m raising it. Why you might ask? This year I am including books I read to my kid as part…

Another thing I've noticed working as a children's librarian is like... kids get so Paralyzed By Choice and the adults in their lives never really register why. Like, for example, we have little scavenger hunt sheets in the children's section and when a kid completes it, they get to pick out a cute eraser from our prize basket. We also have a little toy prize chest as part of our "1000 books before Kindergarten" challenge for when kids complete 100 books--and kids will spend minutes carefully picking through everything while their parents are shooting us anxious looks like "sorry they're taking so long! I know this is silly and it's completely ridiculous that my child is taking so long to choose between a bath toy and a cube puzzle because these are cheap and arbitrary objects! Hurry up, Harper! Just pick something! You're embarrassing me!!" But in the kids' perspective, they already have so little control over what objects come into their lives, and in this case, the object represents labor and effort on their end, so of course they feel they must choose very carefully. I've always been an anxious and indecisive person, so it's striking to see how being rushed really doesn't help that and really only makes it harder for kids to figure out what they want.

I also signed Cecilia up for the 1000 books before kindergarten program because it was an option on the app we’re going to be using to track mine and Gavin’s reading for the summer program! I am absolutely 100% sure with the way this girl demands multiple books every single night that we have already hit 1000 but it will be a fun challenge anyway to try officially. She will also get prizes for different milestones!!! I explained it to her and showed her the app and how we can scan the books and she made me read 7 books 😂😂😂😂 she kept asking but I had to draw the line somewhere otherwise we’d be doing it until midnight 😂😂😂
I asked Dan if he wanted to sign up he thought about it and then declined 😂😂😂😂

Recently found out about the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge to promote bonding and strong early literacy skills. Intrigued, I started finding and logging books that me and T have read over the past 2.5 years.
In a word: exhausting.
But yay books 📚📖

The CBC 1K Writing Challenge
Captain’s Canadian hit 1000 followers yesterday and as she is Tumblr best friends with someone who used to write puns for a living, she decided to make her first writing challenge a pun itself. Don’t judge me, folks! CBC stands for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. But in this context, it stands for CARTER BAIZEN, BUCKY BARNES and CHRIS BECK. If you know me, you would know that these are my TOP THREE of Sebastian’s characters. So, I had to base my writing challenge about them.
Guidelines:
You do not need to be following me, but it would be cool if you did.
Please reblog if you would like to take part. If not, please give this a signal boost. The more people who see this, the better!
Please send your entries through ASKS. I won’t be accepting them through PMs, reblogs or comments!
WE WANT NONE OF THAT P*DO, IN*EST, NON-CON/DUB-CON SHIT IN THIS HOUSE, OKAY?
Prompts are assigned to certain characters. Please write them for them and ONLY for them. I am doing this to encourage people to write for Carter Baizen and Chris Beck (who are so underrated!) and I am also encouraging Bucky Barnes AUs, specifically because I’m a sucker for them.
I have sixty prompts in total and I have divided them into twenty each. I don’t expect all sixty of them to be taken, but I don’t plan on adding any more prompts to this list.
You CAN have more than one prompt per person as long as  you’re writing for MORE THAN ONE character. You can also add two prompts into one entry. The maximum number of prompts per person is THREE. You can have one of each character or you can have two prompts for one character and a third prompt for a different character. But you CANNOT have three prompts for the same character. Also, if you do commit to writing more than one entry, PLEASE ACTUALLY WRITE THEM!
I will accept both OCs and Reader-Inserts.
You can write a One-Shot or a Series.
Please write a minimum of 500 words. If you write more than that, PLEASE USE A ‘READ MORE’ BREAK! IT SAVES LIVES!
Please tag all of your warnings accordingly!
Please tag me @captainscanadian and #cbc1kwc.
If I do not reblog your post in the FIRST TWENTY-FOUR HOURS because Tumblr ate my notifications, please link me to your post via PMs.
I have decided NOT to have a deadline for this challenge, since deadlines create anxiety and we’re not doing that! Join whenever you want, write whenever you want and I’ll end this challenge when I get through this list... even if it’s ten years from now!
Carter Baizen:
1. “Are you trying to make me to hate you? Because it’s working.”
2. “Boom! That oughta show you not to mess with me!”

Superheroes
Summary: Reader is a teacher with a boyfriend who’s practically a superhero: Dean Winchester. Can their relationship last or will distance push them apart?
Pairing: Dean x Reader
Word Count: 1760
Warnings: None, I think? Fluff.
A/N: This is for @deansdirtyduchess‘s 1000 follower challenge. Congrats, Mel! My prompt was the reader being a teacher, and I just had to grab that one since I’m a Kindergarten teacher. It is also for @katymacsupernatural‘s Wish Upon a Star Challenge, which had one of my favorite Disney Quotes from the Incredibles- “You are my greatest adventure.” It was betaed by @because-imma-lady-assface, who was a MAJOR help in getting me past some serious uncertainty with this one. All of the best parts of this are thanks to her. Also, special thanks go out to @impala-dreamer, who helped without knowing she did because Ash used her transition tips to help me rework some parts of this. So, thanks, Beka! Anyways, I hope y’all enjoy. Please let me know what you think.

Were superheroes real? Or were they just fairy tales? That was the question currently being contemplated by your always inquisitive Kindergarten class.
It had all started with a simple story. You had read the story, just like you did at the end of every year, about the ordinary boy, picked on in school, who grows up to be the world’s greatest superhero. It’s an empowerment story, meant to show your students that they can do anything they set their minds to.
When the story ended and you put down the book, one of the little girls in your class raised her hand. “Ms. Y/L/N? Are superheroes real?
It should have been an easy enough question to answer, and for most people it would have been. But not for you. While you knew you should tell them they weren’t real and keep them grounded in reality, you knew better: superheroes were real. Your boyfriend was living proof.
Dean Winchester was a real life superhero.
You’d met Dean a little under two years ago, 16 months to be exact, but who’s counting? Back then, you’d been just like your students: a non-believer. But, Sam and Dean had changed all that in just one night.
It had started off like any other Tuesday. Another day, another late night at school catching up on the work you couldn’t do when the kids were there. After staring at your lesson plans for over a minute without really comprehending any of the words, you decided it was time for a break.
You pushed your laptop away and leaned back in your chair. You let your eyes drift closed, enjoying the calm and quiet that only happened at the end of the day. Because your eyes were closed, you missed the way the lights flickered, how they went out one by one, cascading down the long hallway and into the classroom where you were sitting; you missed the brief flash of grey smoke in the middle of the room, the flash of something not quite human appearing in right front of you and disappearing just as quickly.
When you opened your eyes, the disturbances had passed, leaving you oblivious to the waiting danger. Determined to get back to work, you picked up your coffee cup only to find it empty. “Of freaking course….” you whispered before pushing yourself out of your chair and making your way out of your classroom and down the hallway to the teachers’ lounge, where coffee was waiting.
You had only made it a few steps down the hallway before the air suddenly chilled around you, alerting you for the first time that something was off. You pulled your cardigan tighter around your body to ward off the chill, but goosebumps still rose on the back of your neck, and not just because of the temperature.
You started to walk faster down the hallway, instinct telling you to get to the teachers’ lounge as fast as possible. You didn’t know why, but you knew you wouldn’t be safe until you got there. You had almost made it to the door, when an ethereal figure appeared in front of you, stopping you in your tracks.
As if from a distance, you heard the sound of your coffee cup shattering on the ground, but you barely registered it. All of your senses were frozen, focused in on the pale woman standing in front of you. You knew instantly, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she was a ghost. It was her eyes, you decided. They were dark. Cold. Empty. Dead.
Before you had the chance to scream, the ghost propelled itself towards you at lightning speed. You closed your eyes and braced for impact. But, the impact never came. When you opened your eyes back up, you no longer saw the ghost staring back at you. Instead, you saw the broad back of a man standing directly in front of you. You peeked around him, but the ghost was nowhere in sight.
The man in front of you turned to you, momentarily distracting you from the danger you were facing with his piercing green eyes. He grabbed your arm, sending a spark coursing through your body and causing you to draw in your breath.
“The iron won’t hold that thing off for long,” he said, gesturing with the crowbar he was holding in his other hand. “Come on. I’ve gotta get you somewhere safe.”
“Wait,” you whispered as the man pulled at your arm. He paused and looked back down at you, a mixture of urgency, concern and kindness in his eyes. “Who are you?”
The smile that lit up his face pulled at you, attracting you to him in way no man ever had before. “My name’s Dean. Dean Winchester. I’m here to save you.”
After that night, your life had never been the same. You and Dean had instantly connected, not just physically, but emotionally. You liked all the same things: music, food, jokes, even TV. Everything about him was amazing, perfect even. But that didn’t mean your lives were perfect.
When you’d first gotten together, it was hot. Hot, happy, and blissfully carefree. Your very own honeymoon phase. But, then, Sam and Dean found their next case- one that took them away from you- took Dean away from you.
After that, case after case had kept you and Dean apart, and you missed him like crazy. You stayed in touch via text and Skype, but being away from each other was difficult. Dean came to visit as often as he could, but it wasn’t enough. For either of you.
It all came to a head late one night, after yet another passionate reunion, when you and Dean were lying in bed, tired yet satisfied. Your head was on his chest and his arm was curled around your waist, softly rubbing circles on your bare back. The gentle massage was just about to lull you to sleep when Dean broke the silence.
“I missed you, Y/N.”
“I missed you too, babe,” you replied, gently shifting your hand so it joined your head on Dean’s chest.
“How long was it this time? 4 weeks?”
“Almost 5,” you muttered. “You haven’t had a chance to get back since before that werewolf case in Idaho.”
“Right,” he said, with a laugh. “The extra hairy werewolf case. That one was fun.”
You laughed along with him. “I bet Sam loved all the hair jokes that came along with it.”
“Hey, with hair like that, he’s asking for the jokes.”
You laughed deeply again before changing the subject. “What’s Sam up to this weekend, anyway?” you asked. “Back at the bunker?”
“No, actually. He’s working a case.”
You tightened your lips in confusion. “He is? Without you?”
“Yeah. I wanted to get back here to you. Can’t leave my girl hanging,” he said, squeezing your side. “Besides, Sammy can handle it.”
“Yeah, ok,” you whispered, but a part of you felt guilty. He’d left a case for you. He’d never done that before. And, as happy as you were to see him, you also knew that whoever was in danger out there would be much better off with both brothers out there to protect them.
Your whole body tensed against Dean’s, tipping off immediately to your distress. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” you mumbled.
“Y/N…” he prodded.
“It’s nothing. Or something. I don’t know. It’s just…..I feel guilty.”
“What?” Dean asked, his hand stilling on your back. “Why?”
You sat up and turned away from him. “I don’t know! I guess I just feel bad that you’re here when there’s a case going on. You’ve never skipped a case for me before.”
Dean moved to sit behind you, his hands finding your hips. “Y/N, I love you. I want to be with you. And, like I said, I knew Sammy could handle this one, so I came here instead. This is where I want to be.”
You whirled around to look at him. “But, that’s just it! You’re this amazing man who travels the country saving people and killing monsters, and I’m just me. A regular, boring teacher. How could I ask you to choose me over them?”
Dean smiled widely, the dimples at the corners of his mouth and the crinkles at the edge of his eyes drawing you in. “Y/N, you are my greatest adventure. I never want you to think that you come second to anything or that you’re too boring for my life. It’s just the opposite. You’re everything I could ever want or need. I love you.”
You smiled then, too, and leaned into him, letting him wrap his arms around you. “I love you, too, Dean. I just feel bad that you have to choose between a case and coming all the way out here to visit me. I wish you could do both.”
“Well,” he whispered next to your ear, “I may have an idea to fix that.”
“Oh yeah?” you asked, pulling back to look in his eyes. “And, what’s that? Did one of your angel friends find a way to be in two places at once?”
“No,” he said with a laugh. “But, there is another way. If we lived in the same place, we could see each other between cases.”
Your eyes widened slightly. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” he said, taking your hands in his. “Move into the bunker, with me and Sam.”
“Dean…”
“Before you say no, hear me out,” he said excitedly. “If you lived at the bunker, we could see each other all the time. A lot of the hunts are pretty close by. And, you could even keep teaching. Lebanon has a great school district.” He paused to grin at you. “I researched it.”
“You did?” you whispered breathlessly, overwhelmed by his thoughtfulness. God, you loved this man.
“Yeah. And, you’d be safer in the bunker, too. I wouldn’t have to worry about anything happening to you when I’m away. You could even help with research. You know, if you want.” He paused from his enthusiastic ramble and looked closely at you. “So? What do you think?”
You smiled. “I think I should call my principal and let him know I’m not coming back next year.”
Dean’s face broke into the biggest, happiest smile you had ever seen. “Is that a yes?”
“It’s a yes,” you cried as Dean pulled you into an earth-shattering, toe-curling kiss. After all, who could pass up the chance to live with a real life superhero?

If you've followed our homeschool journey, you know how important the library is to us. Starting with Lapsit Storytime when Trinity was an infant to completing the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge, and now the Mensa Reading Challenge, we can't be without library resources even as fulltime RVers. This can pose a challenge, but Georgia and some other states offer out of state library cards. Since we'll be spending a good amount of time in GA annually, I paid a mere $25 for a card. You can check out up to 50 books at a time at our branch, have access to all digital databases, and it can be used throughout GA and in a number of reciprocal states around the USA. If your unique situation calls for a library card outside of your locale, take advantage of the Georgia Public Library System or the like! 📖📘📚 https://www.instagram.com/p/B8sYIqcpzUS/?igshid=7ji6hbelhu6o

Check out this cool interactive idea for families that challenge parents to read 1000 books to their child before they start kindergarten. If you already read books to them every night, then good for you! I strongly believe that reading to your child often is very important to their developmental process. @bloomingtonlibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/BthD-cLBL68/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1vmj6zxrwgt87

11 Facts
rules: Tell your followers 11 random facts about yourself and tag 11 people. Tag backs are allowed but if you do get tagged again you must not repeat any of the facts you mentioned in the previous round. The facts can be absolutely anything, whatever comes to mind first.
1. I dropped a lamp on my foot when I was 11. I was trying to get a duffel bag out of my parents closet to pack for vacation and the l lamp was on top of it. I really needed stitches but refused to get them. I had a butterfly bandage instead and couldn’t get in the hot tub or go ice skating the whole time we were in Gatlinburg (which, for anyone that doesn’t know, is a touristy town in the mountains of Tennessee that was recently devastated by forest fires).
2. I have two dogs -- a chihuahua (Lucy) and a corgi/spaniel mix (Tucker). Lucy is technically my sister’s dog and Tucker is technically my brother’s. But ask both dogs, and I assure you, if they could talk, they would tell you they’re mine. They’re the neediest little beasts (and are currently both lying on my bed under my covers). I love them though.
3. I’m currently working on a challenge for myself and my nephew of reading 1000 children’s books before he starts Kindergarten in the fall. We’re currently at 574/1000. I feel like I’ve successfully made him love books.
4. When I was in the 8th grade, I watched Bonkers and part of The Lion King every night before I went to bed.
5. I once hit a bullseye on a dartboard in a bar with my eyes closed -- there were two witnesses to this, my friend Emily and my Greek professor.
I spent quite a bit of time trying to do it again, but, well, eyes open, eyes closed, I never even got close.
6. I won a Halloween costume contest in the 2nd grade for “Most Creative Costume.” I was dressed as Cotton Candy.
7. I once climbed on the roof of an ancient ruin in Egypt with my friend Emily after we had explicitly been told not to.
The view was amazing.
8. I never drink, really, mostly because I don’t like alcohol.... so, because I had one once before and liked the taste of it, I once ordered a Long Island Iced Tea for dinner; I was eating with classmates and professors -- not thinking that the previous time I went back to my dorm and like instantly fell asleep. I barely drank any of it, but I’m still embarrassed.
9. While watching Lord of the Rings in theatres, I dropped my own ring under the seat and spent a fair amount of the movie looking for it.
During the same viewing, of the third movie, a woman in front of me asked her date “What’s the deal with the ring?”
10. I stayed up until 5 a.m. watching The Muppet Show because I couldn’t sleep before my final exam of the year/I was also supposed to leave on vacation the next day.
But, anyway, I was deeply offended to learn, after receiving The Muppet Christmas Carol for Christmas this year, that the rest of my family hates the Muppets.
11. I want to write a YA novel.

How to Find Your Strengths, Pursue Your Passion, and Rule the World in 2020
Our boss cleared her throat. “I’m sorry, but I have some bad news.”
She paused, looking down at the stack of papers she was shuffling in her hands. She looked back up at us. She started to say something and then stopped, looking back down at the papers.
That’s when we knew we had lost our jobs.
Newly married and with bills to pay, I was scared.
“What am I going to do? How am I going to tell my wife?”
Hands shaking, I picked up the phone.
“Hi sweetie!” my wife answered, excited but surprised to hear from me. “Is everything okay?”
“Tell her there’s nothing to worry about,” I said to myself.
“Tell her we’ll be fine. Tell her I’ve got this. Tell her…”
“No,” I finally answered after a long pause.
“But it will be.”
Success Stories are Often Preceded by Tales of Woe
Before he became the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan was a high school sophomore licking his wounds after getting cut from the varsity team.
Before he became a millionaire CEO, Jon Morrow was recovering from a horrible automobile accident and wondering what he was going to do with his life.
And before I became the Editor-in-Chief at Smart Blogger, fulfilling my dream of writing full-time so I could work from home and spend more time with my family, I was just a boy…
…standing in front of a girl…
…asking her for directions to the unemployment office.
Life rarely takes the path we think it will take. All too often, it sends us on detours filled with potholes, road construction, and pedestrians who refuse to use crosswalks.
But here’s the thing:
Some of life's greatest opportunities are in the detours.Click To Tweet
Getting cut from the varsity team made Michael Jordan work harder. Jon’s accident afforded him time to learn everything there was to know about blogging. My unemployment led me here.
If I hadn’t lost my full-time job, I wouldn’t have leaned on freelance writing to make ends meet.
Knowing random baseball trivia wasn’t a payable skill. Neither was earning an income as a male model, no matter how devilishly handsome my wife says I am.
I turned to writing, a hobby I dabbled in from time to time on the side, out of desperation. And, to my surprise, I discovered — not just my passion, but — the thing God put me on this earth to do.
Of course, my story isn’t unusual. The paths people take to discover their strengths tend to have unique twists and turns.
The good news?
If you’ve yet to find your strengths, knowing the journeys taken by others can help you find your own way.
How 13 Influencers Discovered Their Personal Strengths (+ Lessons Learned)
Over the last several years, I’ve reached out to successful people I admire and asked them one simple question:
How did you discover your strengths?
Some (I’m looking at you, Weird Al) never got back to me. But many did.
Here’s how they responded (and how you can use their experiences to find your own strengths):

I’ve discovered all my strengths by making myself uncomfortable. What I mean by that is that all my life — on a pretty regular basis — I’ve put myself into these situations that made me deeply uncomfortable.
It meant living in a country where I didn’t speak the language; jumping out of a plane (with a parachute!); speaking in front of hundreds of people, and more.
Every time I do something that expands my personal comfort boundaries, I discover some strength I didn’t know I had.
It turns out I am more than capable of learning a new language. And facing my fear by jumping out of a plane was fun! And people enjoy my presentations when I speak.
If I’d never made myself try those things, I wouldn’t have discovered those strengths.
[On pursuing your passion]
It’s funny, more than using my strengths to pursue my passions, I think I’ve used that sense of “just go for it!” to pursue my passions.
The “nothing ventured, nothing gained” approach has served me well both in my personal life and in my business life.
That’s why I’m continually pointing people toward taking action. At some point, you have to take everything you’ve learned and step out and apply it.
Go ahead — jump out of that plane. There’s a beautiful view on the way down. 🙂
— Pamela Wilson Founder of Big Brand System
The Lesson
No one likes to be uncomfortable.
But, if you force yourself to be uncomfortable from time to time, you’ll find you’re capable of more than you could’ve ever imagined.

Just Do It
I discovered my strengths from the simple yet powerful quote: ‘If you want to be…do.’ – Unknown.
I wanted to be a Podcaster, so I just had to Podcast. As I podcasted my way to the now over 1000+ episodes of EOFire, I uncovered strengths I didn’t even know I possessed, and it all stemmed from DOING.
— John Lee Dumas Host of Entrepreneurs on Fire
The Lesson
Want to know a surefire way to never find your strengths?
Do a whole lot of jack and squat.

Know Your Limits
You discover your strengths by trying new things. Eventually you will find out what you are good at and what you aren’t.
It’s almost like experimentation…
[On pursuing your passion]
Whatever you are passionate about, you want to use your strengths to move you forward. No one is a jack of all trades, so focus on using your strengths to help you accomplish your goals. As for what you aren’t good at, find other people to help you out in those areas.
— Neil Patel Co-founder of Neil Patel Digital
The Lesson
Knowing your strengths is great, but knowing your weaknesses is equally important.
Those things you suck at (whatever they might be)? It’s okay to ask a friend (or find someone on Google or LinkedIn) to handle them.

Be Willing to Look Stupid
I discovered most of my strengths as a child. I was always a curious little fellow, trying out different things, making messes, never afraid of looking stupid or making a mistake. To me, it was always part of the fun.
I think that’s the biggest part of discovering what you do best: the willingness to look stupid. If you try 100 different things, you’ll suck at 95 of them, and you have to be willing to put up with the failures until you find the areas where you are genuinely gifted.
Personally, I realized I was a gifted writer really early. I was reading books and writing stories before I even got to kindergarten. For me, it was as natural as breathing. I can’t imagine struggling with it.
I think everyone has something like that. You just have to keep trying new things until you find it.
— Jon Morrow CEO of Smart Blogger
The Lesson
A byproduct of discovering the areas where you excel is discovering, through sometimes embarrassing mishaps, the things you’re bad at.
If you can power through the stumbles, you’ll eventually get to enjoy the successes.

Do What You Love
By trial and error. I think we are notoriously bad at knowing what we are good at. I realized my strengths were a combination of what I loved doing, but also what I was good at and what was useful to people.
When I think of strengths, I think of things that give me energy, don’t take it. So I am constantly looking at what I’m doing and asking, “Is this fun? Does it energize me?” If not, how can I turn this into something that is fun and energizing or move on to something else.
We only have so much time on earth, so we might as well spend it doing things that are worth our time. For me, doing what I love (even on days when it’s difficult) is something I have to make room for.
— Jeff Goins Best-selling author of Real Artists Don’t Starve
The Lesson
Oftentimes, the quickest way to find your strengths is to ask yourself a simple question:
“What do I enjoy?”
True, there are no guarantees you’ll have a natural talent related to your passion. I’ve met many a baseball fanatic who couldn’t hit their way out of a wet paper sack.
But if you love something, if it energizes you, there’s a reason. And, sometimes, that reason is you’re good at it — even if you’re blissfully unaware of this fact.

Listen and Learn
Often people focus on their weakness and spend most of their time trying to get better. In my case, I do the opposite. I try to focus on my strengths and see how I can get even better.
I have discovered my strengths through variety of means. Sometimes it was just a gentle nudge from someone else telling me that I was good at something. At other times, it was from my quarterly reviews of what went well and what didn’t.
— Syed Balkhi CEO of Awesome Motive
The Lesson
If someone pays you a compliment, don’t assume it’s empty flattery. They might see a strength in you that you’ve to discover about yourself.

Try New Things
I discovered my strengths by trying new things, thinking about what I’m passionate about, considering what things I do that really make me feel energized, asking friends for their input, and challenging myself to keep stepping outside my comfort zone.
[On pursuing your passion]
Honestly, my strengths and my passions are mostly intertwined. For instance, I love writing. I can’t not write. I always say that if you were to leave me on a desert island with nothing, I’d find a stick and writing my thoughts in the dirt. I just can’t help myself.
I also love encouraging and cheerleading other people. So one of the ways I use my writing is to challenge and champion women to be the best versions of themselves that they can be. It’s the perfect mesh of both my strengths and passions.
— Crystal Paine Founder of Money Saving Mom
The Lesson
Want to find your strengths? Want to land your perfect job someday? You have to be willing to try new things.
Your comfort zone may be nice and cozy, but if you never branch out, you’re never going to grow.

Wear Many Hats
Honestly, it took me a little while to understand what my strengths were.
When I created StudioPress, I was wearing many hats, so I had to run all facets of the business. Through that experience I was able to determine the areas I enjoyed, and areas that I think I was strong in.
— Brian Gardner Founder of StudioPress and Minimologie
The Lesson
Finding your strengths can be a numbers game. The more things you take ownership of, the quicker you’ll discover the things you enjoy and — even better — the areas where you excel.

Remember That it Isn’t a Quest
Like anyone, really — I stumbled upon my strengths by sheer accident.
I think discovering strengths isn’t really so much a specific quest we undertake: “Today, I’ve decided to discover whether I’m excellent or terrible at playing billiards.”
I think people find their strength more by undertaking an activity out of fun, interest, curiosity, need or obligation, and then realizing after the fact that, hey, they have a knack for it.
For example, I didn’t realize writing was one of my strengths until I’d written several pieces. I didn’t realize determination was one of my strengths until years of perseverance proved it so. I didn’t realize quick wit was a strength until… you get the picture!
[On how to follow your passion]
It’s more than just using your strengths, really. You can know your strengths, and apply them to your pursuits, but you also need to be aware of your capabilities and interest levels of said strengths.
It’s like this: I’m strong in math skills, but I don’t like math much, and it doesn’t really interest me — so naturally, it makes more sense to delegate number-crunching to my accountant.
That sort of self-awareness is a crucial element of successful entrepreneurship, and that’s why with every project I undertake, I don’t ask whether it falls within my strengths; I ask whether I’m the right person, or whether someone else would be better suited to the task.
— James Chartrand Owner of Men With Pens
The Lesson
People rarely find their strengths on purpose. Usually, it’s a happy accident.
Live your life, choose a career path, and reflect on your journey from time to time. Inevitably, you’ll discover you picked up a strength or two along the way.

Challenge Yourself
From an early age I’ve had a knack for figuring out how things work and using that understanding to build scalable processes. Even with little to no subject matter experience.
It seems obvious to me now, but I only discovered this about myself in my mid-20s.
Although, looking back, I can see the signs – I dismantled my Dad’s VCR when I was 3-4 years old to try and figure out how it worked.
I taught myself to build websites using Dreamweaver when I was 12 and launched an online record label when I was in college.
When did I discover my strength exactly?
In 2012, I landed a job at a marketing agency based on my experience of building niche websites.
For reasons I didn’t understand at the time, I was put in charge of developing processes & systems for a new service offering.
I was the guinea pig. The canary in the coal mine.
I had to figure out whether the service could provide an ROI for the client, whether it was profitable, how our team would implement it, and the tech stack that would power it.
Feeling like I was in over my head? That would be an understatement.
But I persevered and got the job done. So well, that I became the go-to person for solving marketing-related challenges.
And eventually it hit me. Jason, my boss, figured out what my strength was back when he first interviewed me.
Here’s the thing:
Progress isn’t easy and personal development doesn’t magically happen. The pressure was real and there were moments when I did feel like pulling my hair out when dealing with nightmare clients.
Sure, there were moments where I felt like throwing in the towel but I pushed through and I’m glad I did. After all, we don’t know what we’re capable of until we’re challenged.
— Adam Connell Founder of Blogging Wizard
The Lesson
One of the best ways to discover what you’re made of is to apply a little pressure.
Will you sink?
Or will you discover a strength you never knew was inside of you?

Face the Roadblocks Head On
Discovering my strengths comes in two steps:
1) Knowing what goal I want to achieve; 2) Then accepting every roadblock as a personal challenge & opportunity to gain experience.
No true growth comes without opposition.
Sadly, humans desperately try to avoid what’s uncomfortable.
But what would you do if you knew you could not fail?
That’s where my own perspective differs from most:
What others call failure’, I call “success in motion.”
[On pursuing your passion]
I find it a little ironic (and also humorous) that every skill developed during my hardest challenges in life became critical to achieving my successes today.
Being forced to learn podcasting & editing skills to create Wanted Hero shows for readers allowed me to earn $12K a day for a corporation disgruntled with their current media company.
Having to learn various web skills to build my Wanted Hero sites helped me secure dozens of jobs, including a high-paying annual contract requiring only 90 minutes of my time per month.
The best result of all?
Welcoming opposition in my life has provided the skill set to write, publish and promote my fantasy creations to the world.
— Jaime Buckley Author, father of 13, and creator of Wanted Hero World
The Lesson
Not every roadblock should be avoided. Some offer valuable life experiences that’ll help you grow and, yes, discover your strengths.
Also:
When you hustle, when you put in the hard work, new job opportunities have a way of presenting themselves to you.

Take Advantage of Opportunities
Luck played a big role in finding out my strengths, and I learned that my strengths were quite different from what I’d always thought about myself.
I used to think I wasn’t creative, and I definitely didn’t have a talent for writing, but years ago I was working in corporate marketing and good content became key to my job. No one else wanted to write blog posts, so somehow I ended up writing our company blog. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it.
After taking Jon Morrow’s guest blogging course in 2011, I got published on Copyblogger and KISSmetrics and I had to admit to myself that I wasn’t so bad at writing. I became braver at trying out new things, and learned I had a knack for teaching and coaching. Who would have thought that I’d create a business to teach people how to write better!
— Henneke Duistermaat Founder of Enchanting Marketing

When job opportunities present themselves, take them. You never know when life is putting you on a path of self-discovery.

1 Month, 3 Years, and Many More to Go
Tumblr media
Pablo has been with us for a month now.  Being a new parent to a living child, a newborn, in particular, has been challenging and rewarding at the same time. People have asked me, “Is this what you thought it would be like?”  I reply, “It’s better.”  One of the things Baby Pablo and I have been doing is going to storytimes and reading books together.  Our local library, St. Louis County Library, has a program to read 1000 books to your child before he or she enters kindergarten.  We’ve read close to 60 books so far, many of them favorites from my wife and my childhood.  I’ve also been reading Pablo The Jesus Storybook Bible.  I want Pablo to grow up with our faith and come to love Jesus the way we do.
One thing I have been reflecting on though is how just a few years I ago I was really struggling with my mental health, my work, and life in general.  The end of my 20’s and my early 30’s was wrought with hospitalizations for suicide attempts, ECT, and I went on disability for my mental health.  I was at one of my lowest points in life, but God didn’t leave me there.  My low point wasn’t my last point as one of my former pastors has said.  Things turned around, but not right away.  First, I got stable on my medications and with therapy.  I also received many supports from a community mental health organization.  I started working with supported employment and ultimately found my own part-time job. I got involved in a faith community.  I prayed.  I played music and started a band called Recovery.  I did NOT focus on dating that much and resigned myself to a life that would probably be spent single by focusing on friends and family. As I began to regain my mental health and work life, I started dating.  It didn’t work out at first, but eventually, I met Kelly who is now my wife and mother to my children.
For me, the road to recovery has been a very long process. Throughout it, I had many struggles and obstacles to overcome.  Sometimes I didn’t think I would make it.  Reflecting on this recently I became aware of a mental health and suicide prevention advocate who died by suicide this past week, Amy Bleuel.  I thought about how easily this could have been my story.  What makes my story different from hers?  Why am I here and thriving when others aren’t?  I don’t have all the answers to those questions, but I think setting small goals along the way, having a good support network, and working hard has helped me live in mental health recovery.  I think faith and God’s intervening work in my life and story plays a huge role in being where I am today as well.
Today, while I still live with a treatable mental illness that is being treated and am disabled, I live a meaningful life.  I am Christian, a husband, and a father.  I am preparing to be our son’s primary caretaker as my wife goes back to work in the coming months.  I’m learning, I’m teaching, and I’m listening.  Life is complex.  It’s messy, and it’s hard.  But life is beautiful and full of hope and meaning.  If you think your story is over, or you're struggling right now, hang in there.  Life does get better.  Your story can change.   Sometimes it changes with smalls steps, and sometimes life changes very quickly.  Remember to love life and those around you well.  If you need to reach out for help don’t hesitate. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is always there 1-800-273-TALK. Remember to hope. Remember to dream.  Recovery is possible.

I went mad with his ignorance. I show brutal violent threat and scorned him for near half hour in cause of his failing VPN and system update. I didn't mean hurts but remind him his work, his future indispensable with high tech including internet, while his mom and his grandma actually not equipped it, for their cheap work mainly related with primitive tools. my son show resolve when we went for lunch and shower, even after I bought him extra fruits. on way returning to my dorm, I pray God to let it the hard time for us to defeat, to slaughter our enemies by hand and will. I beg Holy rewards us thicker after the adversity and allow us to stick out of the dark curtain and smile. in the night I felt guilty upon my son, and boring and sad for shopping online. I bought my son a spring trousers with cellphone pocket. I also ordered myself one but run out of money. so I entreated my kid brother to pay. but the contemptible man enlist my phone number into his blacklist to evade confrontation with me. God dad, last Monday after my ICBC monthly credit statement revealed ¥700 left under account, I immediately renew zhone 19th domain, billingzhu.com for my 2nd son, to its longest life span, 5 years for ¥511. dad God, there is only one thing unfinished in 2016 as annual, woz's 12 domains renewal. grant us financial freedom to do the job. bring me sooner my Royal China to sustain my offspring. bring Asoh Yukiko, my Crowned Queen from Japan, to home my new family. bring 2017 new monument for ever growing mission to revitalize eastern Asia, for the grace and persistent commitment of Chinese and Japanese for thousand years forged in Ming Dynasty under my ancestor's title, Zhu's. thx dad God, for the snowing night yesterday and this morning so quiet in sober.

dreamt of complicated time space pair. after 2 busy days at dorm, heat gathered in central China gradually melt. my nose ran water a lot, and shit softly, too. last night I perceived erotic dream drove by full sperms, but in fact I didn't wet last night. rather, in dream I got insight of time-space tangle. I saw a dynasty broke down and lots of strange behaviors, like soldier don't know who to obey, court women don't know how to survive in riot era. I saw my Nankai alumni went class while I drift wild. I saw when time dissolves, events in space can be floating around, losing their sequence. the result and the cause in different time location can't be replaced, otherwise there will be forecast, in time travel paradox. these days hard economy again pestered me. I only gain a much shrinked ¥3000 in 2016 as year end bonus from QRRS, my once and long time employer, comparing near ¥7000 in 2015. a policy gain, aid for poor staff, ¥1000 offered to me by labor union. I handed over to dorm canteen at once, and next day I had to borrow ¥200 again for living expense. now I have debt ¥1000 to local contacts, and my anual renewal of zhone domains yet complete. ¥2000 will do the job like a breeze. then again every month I will fight for dinning out twice a week with my son woz for gathering, and my pills will add another ¥100. in the 3rd hometown flight tour, I almost broke up with my kid brother who contempts me and cheats me into endless waiting his aid. now my salary, at its best around ¥3000, barely afford our lifestyle including credit debt penalty. but, God, how I lucky in such failing economy maintaining such a small burden of investment! and watch the grand produce of my endeavour and willful. God, dad, I see so many affirmatives in holy message. please firmly attach me onto faith of Christian. bring me sooner my Royal China to fasten the falling treasure. bring me Asoh Yukiko to put together the Empire dream and stipulation. grant me financial independence to safeguard our startup so strong online.

the night before yesterday I gave my son a lesson, for he too open and vulnerable upon cheap offers. this night I felt blessed when we ready to sleep. I first dreamt in art college saw many students and computers running a software likely robohelp or tin?in. its a series tools including 3d modeling, illustration, and presentation. in dream I felt glad to fetch my pastime skill and sharpen them. I felt that would more or less let me more energetic. then in my hometown village, facing neighbor village there are 2 modern office malls where once rice field. many small companies rent space there and share introduction multimedia, project management or progress report online there. I still dwelling on the robohelp and thought about app as service, or the functions of presentation. I tried hard to sync our data or put our running data into the app. the detail of program very lengthy in dream, even cross the intervene of getting up to pee. 2 days ago I finally got informed that our train ticket booked, after more than 60000 times bidding online by our travel agency, ctrip.com. so last unease resolved and we really needn't hurry, just as holy affirmed. my son once repulsive upon my teasing infant of my nephew's, a 16 month old boy, after I told him why I glad to help infant with empowering them with full heart support, he forgave me and I thankful for his considerate. his willful pal, the grandson of my 2nd elder sister, also quit hijacking my son with all flattery. I also openly talked about fault of my 2nd elder sister whose family less attractive and colder in heart, with her husband and daughter-in-law. the daughter-in-law is a slim tall woman with adorable configure and I tried to help her when she loathe to chores. I hope they don't pitfall like some of my relatives. after all, we are family from my passed grand father, God in heaven now. this is a sunny morning with clouds. hopeful it will more shiny later. God, dad, bring me sooner my Royal China to home my offspring, to guest my concerned. bring me financial independence to liberate some of my relatives trapped in wrong idea and habit. grant me adequate fund to renew our domains, the last task unfilled upon new year 2017.
