i don't think the background art in mob psycho 100's anime adaptation gets nearly enough love. it's full of mundane objects depicted in the most exquisite watercolors.

like this electrical pole here. with its giant soup can-like transformer and attendant power lines against a cloudy twilight sky, all shot through with vibrant pink and lilac and creamy butter yellow.

not only does this painting–and it is a painting–bring new meaning to the phrase 'golden hour', it's still one of the most glorious things i've ever laid eyes on. and you might pass one of these utility poles every day without a second glance. since seeing this image? i haven't been able to.

this is a single frame of animation. there are hundreds of thousands more in this series, maybe just as beautiful. i wanted to call your attention to this one. just because.

it reminds me to pay attention.

to notice, and keep noticing, the beauty in ordinary things (and beings!).

out of the 90 or so panels that ONE devotes to the mental fight between shigeo and mob in mob psycho 100's confession arc -- from mob's conscious awareness of shigeo's presence to shigeo's eventual dissolution and assimilation of mob -- just seven show us that the child can actually be heard arguing with himself from the outside.

since the anime concluded its run last year, i've had those panels on my mind. studio bones only animated the largest one and relegated shigeo's speech on it to internal dialogue (much more on that decision here). they're so compelling that i decided to redraw them in my own style.

this is the seventh and last of them. it occurs just before shigeo smacks reigen in the head with a chunk of fallen city in hopes of scaring him off (it doesn't work).

大河ドラマにはなんの興味も無いのだが、偶然（？）再放送していた＜100分de名著　源氏物語　紫式部＞がとても面白かった。私のようにあちこち囓り読みしただけのものであっても、物語全体の構成と恋愛＋政治の時代背景が大変よくわかる。報道機関としてのNHKは最低だが、日曜美術館と新日本風土記、そしてこの番組だけはレベルを維持しつつ続けてほしいものだ。

5時起床。

日誌書く。

洗濯機回す。

朝食。

今日はツレアイがオフ、弁当は作らず。

珈琲。

洗濯物を干す。

空き瓶缶、45L*1。

一人で出勤する。

順調に到着する。

昨日の＜スタディスキルズ＞の提出物（Work102）をチェック、想定通り要求されている書式を満たしていないものが多い（授業名、担当者、日付などのメタ情報）。例年通り、これが次回の授業ネタになるのだ。

水曜日2限・3限は＜情報機器の操作Ⅰ（栄養学科）＞、月曜日と同内容。まずは、タイプライターの写真を見せてキーボード文化を解説する。ネットワークにログイン、例年ならID＆パスワードを記録した紙を忘れる学生がいるものだが、今年は4クラスともそれがなかった。PCとスマホでのメールとポータルサイトの利用、署名の設定、最後にPC所有情況のアンケート、きょうは自宅にPCを持たない学生の数が多い印象。

順調に帰宅する。

履修者名簿の修正ができているのを確認し、GoogleDriveに＜情報機器の操作Ⅰ＞の評価用の名簿を作成する。＜スタディスキルズ＞は木・金の授業を終えてからの作業となる。

外出していたツレアイ帰宅、早めに夕飯準備にかかる。

厚切り豚ロースを昆布に巻いて3日間、そのまま焼くだけで塩味不要で美味しい。焼きビーフン、レタスとトマト、ウルメなど。

that scene in season 1 where teruki hanazawa exorcises ekubo mid-sentence... and shigeo's eyes widen in shock?

i really want to talk about it, specifically the explosion meter accompanying it.

normally, when the teenager's emotions aren't obvious to the audience, that meter relays to us a sense of what he is actually feeling. but we cannot trust the meter here. we see it jump up a few points at teru's 'psycho wave' sending the sleazy ghost to the shadow realms, and remain steady at 50% upon shigeo's recollections of the spirit's unsavory nature. the boy outright tells teru that he isn't bothered. and it's funny!

but shigeo isn't being honest with himself here either.

his face briefly gives his feelings away before resettling into its normal flat affect. (to be fair, what he's really feeling isn't teru's business. this kid is trying to provoke a fight out of him, after all.) after he's basically tortured into exploding, shigeo spends three hours in the pouring rain, searching everywhere for ekubo.

three. hours.

these are not the actions of someone who isn't bothered. letting himself get drenched to the point of sickness,

even though he literally holds the power to shield himself from it,

reads to me like unconscious self-punishment for allowing all this to happen.

after a large chunk of his short life spent denying and fearing them for good reason, shigeo's first impulse is often not to use his psychic powers -- even after his integration at the story's end. i wish this was discussed more, because many watchers cannot fathom why this boy with world-breaking psychic abilities would ever refuse to use them.

also: the explosion meter lying to us / representing shigeo's detachment from his own emotions alexithymia may occur elsewhere in the series as well, especially when he's not close to an explosion; i'm reminded of the tiny dent ritsu's provocation of him makes in it a few episodes later.

since the end of the anime, the seven manga panels in mob psycho 100's confession arc where shigeo and mob's argument can be heard from the outside have taken up residence in my head; they're charging me rent. this is panel four.

directly after shigeo speaks the line above, mob brushes shigeo's hands away from his face in disgust at the sentiment. thus rejected -- again -- by his own self, shigeo then resolves to dispense with mob and suppress him entirely. i chose to emphasize shigeo's understandable ire in this panel. it's obvious from context alone in the manga, but not so much in isolation like this.

出勤すると、まず窓を開けて換気する。少々天気は悪いが、いつもの中庭を見て驚いた。このところ桜にばかり目を奪われていたが、欅の緑がずいぶん濃くなっている。10日前の画像と比べると明らかだ。そう思うと、校舎の向こうの千里北公園の緑もずいぶん変化してきている。一年で一番好きな新緑の季節の到来、背筋が伸びる気がするね。

5時起床。

日誌書く。

洗濯機回す。

朝食。

珈琲。

火曜日だがツレアイは午後から友人宅へ行くというので、3人分の弁当を用意する。

可燃ゴミ、30L*1＆45L*1。

ヤクルトさんから野菜ジュース購入、同時にO姉も登場、今日から火曜日は一緒に出勤することになる。

交通量が多く、少し時間がかかった。

火曜日は3限・4限＜スタディスキルズ（看護学科）＞、O姉と同時進行だ。いつも通り、私の方で進行プログラムと配付資料を用意し、昼休みに打合せをする。彼女ももう5年目なので、安心して任せることができる。

出欠確認・座席指定、教員の自己紹介、シラバス説明、大学案内、高校と大学の違い、最後に教科書の＜Work1　自己紹介から始めよう＞のWorkshop、仕上げは前に出て一人ずつ自己紹介してもらう。3限のクラスは進行が悪くて少し時間が足りなくなった。ともあれ、欠席者がいなかったのにはホッとする。

帰路は巡業、買い物をするというO姉と拙宅で別れる。

ツレアイも友人宅から帰宅したばかり、私が買い物に出るつもりだったが、代わりに走ってくれた。

私は夕飯準備、彼女はココに点滴をする。

今夜は在庫消化の揚げ物、手羽中の唐揚げ・サツマイモの天ぷら・独活と人参葉のかき揚げ、そこへ見切り品のコロッケと竹輪の磯辺揚げ。

on first watch as an anime-only, i remember feeling like ritsu kageyama's descent into evil in episode seven needed a little more air, more space to breathe. i... no longer do. if that slide down the slippery slope feels a bit sudden, there is a reason; and if you know what to look for, it's not actually all that sudden. bear with me here.

from the first episode, the anime sets ritsu up as shigeo's kind, solicitous younger brother. we don't see much of him for the first three episodes, but when we do, he's making bids for shigeo’s attention: helpfully straightening his spoon when it bends and deposits a bite of his dinner on the dining table; noting that he seems out of it and offering himself up as a confidant at least twice; checking in on him in the morning so they can both leave on time. (i actually love the anime for doing this. ritsu doesn't even show up as a character until maybe the middle of the manga's second volume?) except for the spoon, shigeo gently turns him down every time.

and yet. the interview ichi mezato snags with ritsu in episode four confirms a distance between the kageyama boys. you are not seeing things here. he initially refuses her desire for detailed information about shigeo’s powers, only indulging her to find out what shigeo’s been up to. ritsu holds those powers in such awe that he uses a rather hyperbolic phrase to describe shigeo for her: '世界の基本', or sekai no kihon, literally the standard for [his] world.

after he coldly walks out on her, she reviews what little she’s gleaned from their chilly meeting: he's hawt, at the top of his class, athletic, very popular... all things his older brother decidedly is not. the story establishes a duality here between ritsu’s image—indirectly revealed through mezato’s notes—and the reality of ritsu, sat hunched across from her, sullen, barely tolerating her until she coughed up the information she promised him. later on that evening, we see just how deep ritsu's awe goes... or rather, how snared up it is in resentment and envy as he attempts in vain to bend a spoon, just like shigeo did when they were younger. all the trophies of others’ esteem already gathering dust on his shelves don’t mean shit if he can’t have this.

ritsu intercepts shigeo as he leaves for class the next morning: no student council meeting, so an opportunity to actually talk to him. this is rare, his brother notes. and of course dimple is haunting shigeo. when the specter comments on their apparent closeness, the boy side-eyes him hard. this can easily be read two ways: ‘why the hell are you talking to me when no one else can see you?’ and ‘man, fuck you for sticking the knife in deeper.’ ritsu doesn’t ask about the cult meeting here or ever in the entire series. was he really all that interested in mezato’s news? no, he only wants to know why his brother doesn’t use his powers anymore. and this is the first time they’ve talked about this.

it’s such a neat little mystery, these breadcrumbs the story leaves for us until ritsu’s formal introduction in episode six. even though they share the same home and appear to be on friendly terms, the kageyama brothers may as well live on opposite sides of the planet. we don’t even get a sense of why this state of affairs exists until episode five, where teru chokes the breath out of shigeo and his pissed-off soul levels teru’s school before catapulting him into the stratosphere to reflect on his sins: several years prior, shigeo nearly killed ritsu (and possibly ended three much older boys) in an accident neither boy understands; fragments of memory flash before his eyes as his consciousness shorts out.

‘brother, you’re home late, sopping wet. here’s a towel. are you hungry? you seem down; is everything OK? if you need to talk, i’m here for you.’

instead of turning down this bid for connection like all the rest and turning inward again, shigeo actually opens up. he apologizes for the accident—for the first time—then asks for some clarity, since his memories of it are broken. and ritsu clenches the knob to his brother’s bedroom door tighter. he lies to his face, tells him to ‘get over it already.’ this after asking shigeo to confide in him again, no less: too terrified to be honest with him, too used to being shot down. this boy is soaking in fear he has no context for, and he heads downstairs to soak in it alone. shigeo at least has reigen to process his own fears with, though he never trusts the man enough to take full advantage.

ritsu has no one.

he’s already keeping up appearances at home and has been for years; over the course of the spring cleaning big cleanup arc, we learn the extent to which he’s been doing so at school.

(all those expectations of him weighing him down for so long… he can’t hold out forever.)

student council vice president tokugawa calls him out on trying to melt into the scenery like his brother; his considerable gifts make that impossible. said gifts, however, are so ego-dystonic for him that they’re yet another part of Ritsu Kageyama’s Big Lie. the academically-gifted, popular sprinter so many of his fellow students swoon over isn’t real: why does everyone praise him for things anyone could do? he doesn’t actually have friends, just associates. who cares about charisma? why does everyone think he’s perfect when the only thing he truly wants will never be his? and why does his locker leak chocolate every valentine’s day?

gentle reader. are you still wondering why he snaps when he finally gets his wish? and why it looks the way it does?

久々の出勤、9/1（金）以来のことだ。事務組織の再編でメールボックスの設置場所が変わったので、朝一で確認する。研究室に入って窓を開けて換気、をを、秋の空だ。前期の授業は9クラスあったが後期は5クラス、その分自分の時間が増える。ゆっくり焦らず、後期の＜宿題＞に取り組むことにしよう。

5時30分起床。

日誌書く。

洗濯機回す。

朝食は久しぶりのそば定食、そば湯に無農薬レモンを浮かべるととても香りが良い。

火曜日だが出勤なので、弁当を4人分用意する。その間に、ツレアイが洗濯物を干す。

可燃ゴミ30L*2。

往路は吹田ICを利用するので、距離は少し長いが走りやすい。

まずはタイムカードの整���、先週の有休消化申請をする。

今日の仕事は「授業改善報告書」の作成、前期末の学生による授業アンケートの結果を踏まえてフォーマットを埋める作業。9クラス分あるが、特に問題となる指摘はない。早々に仕上げて、メールで提出する。

図書館のTさんとSさん来室、お土産を届けてくれた、感謝！

先日購入したICレコーダーのレビュー、amazonから掲載したとのメールが届く。これで販売先からギフト券が届く（はず）。

Kindle で『MIX』、最新作の21巻までたどり着いた。『タッチ』の後日談、おじさんには面白い。

弁当を食べ、名神の情報をチェックすると事故渋滞。とは言え、今日のミッションは済んだので退出する。

茨木ICから入り、桂川PA手前からノロノロ運転、普段より30分近く余計にかかってしまった。

今夜は Apple のイベント、iPhone15の発表があるはず。もちろん、私は高いびきの時間帯だが、iPhone14が値下げされるだろうから現状の価格を調べておく。

ツレアイは午前中の訪問2件、昼には帰宅していたので仕込んでおいた＜無水地鶏カレー＞の味付けを頼んでおいた。

イワシの丸干しを焼いて冷酒で乾杯、昨日の内科受診を無事に（？）終えたので見逃していただきたい。

初回放送日: 2023年9月11日 シャーロック・ホームズ・シリーズでは、ささいな出来事の裏に大きな犯罪があり、重大事件と思われた出来事が実は平凡な人間の弱さから発しているという皮肉が描かれる。 赤毛の人だけを募集して不思議な仕事を依頼する奇妙な出来事の裏に巨大な犯罪が潜んでいたという顛末（てんまつ）を描く「赤毛組合」。恐ろしい誘拐事件にみえた犯罪が、実は妻に自分の秘密を隠すために行われた夫のとっさの行為だったことを描く「唇のねじれた男」。事件の表層と真相の反転をドイルは見事に描いていく。第二回は、人生や出来事が一筋縄ではいかない多層的なものだというコナン・ドイルの洞察に迫っていく。

続いて久しぶりに桂枝雀のDVDを楽しむ、「質屋蔵」「あくび指南」、無条件に笑えるのが嬉しい。

片付け、入浴・・・のはずが、お酒が効いて途中でダウン。
