Sooo, after several months of avoiding it in my vid recommendations, I finally decided to go see what Epic: The Musical is all about. And as embarrassing it is to admit, I'm kinda hooked right now. šŸ˜… (I'm currently going through this playlist of various people's animatic interpretations presenting all the songs in order, and I'm only halfway through rn)
Event though I know and care very little about Greek mythology, I gotta give credit to talent where it's due, and Jorge Rivera-Herrans has *definitely* earned it from me. His musical retelling of the stories so far are PHENOMENAL! šŸ˜Š I can't even decide on a favourite song 'cause they're all really good! But some are definitely higher up there than others, and the one I'm currently hooked on is "Ruthlessness". So I just wanna throw in a couple of the animatics artists have done for it:
https://youtu.be/0lsYf_0UGLE?si=Zwdr2dLDbtAOMW9L
https://youtu.be/skVSbITX4kY?si=mVjADvKGnnPiqv_N
https://youtu.be/WOgxiS33tME?si=ZE2pfBkSdPREwpRh
The other two are pretty good but AnniFlamma's version will forever reign as #1 for me~ šŸ˜„ The way they drew/designed Poseidon is just so hot- I-I mean, stunning- I mean, badass- I mean- .... He's hot. šŸ˜³
i know Epic: the Musical! some of my friends forced me to watch it a couple of days before you sent in this ask. i can't find the specific animatic compilation video they showed me, but it had the third version of Ruthlessness in it. i remember that super detailed water animation... that's probably still my favorite, but i can't deny that that horse with human teeth is TERRIFYING, and that gigi's work is peak as always. overall, you have great taste in terms of choosing animatics with backgrounds and ample breakdowns :)
seems we're coming at this from different angles, though. i was pretty into greek mythology as a kid, and i had to read the Odyssey in my sophomore year of high school. therefore, i already knew the basic plot of the musical before i ever heard it, edits they made to the plot notwithstanding. i think i said out loud, "woo, Telemachus time~!" when he first appeared on screen, which is not something you say if you don't already know the story.
still, as both a greek mythology fan and a storyboard artist, i'm glad there's a series out there that's both introducing folks to the Odyssey and giving a bunch of artists an entry point into making animatics. perhaps i'll meet some of these people out in the industry someday. said friend who made me watch Epic has been trying to convince me to board one of the songs myself, but we'll see if that actually comes to pass.
(if i did, i guess it would probably be God Games, as that's the song i remember liking the most. then again, part of the reason why i liked it was because of the accompanying high-octane fight sequences, which are also really difficult and time consuming to board.)
youtube
Another quick Epic mention here just to say that I really *really* wanna see somebody purchase an Aiden & Ally double greeting so they can duet this part of "Done For". With how well they can both sing I just know the combination would be Magical~! šŸ’«šŸŒŸšŸŒ šŸ˜Š (Should probably clarify tho, I think this short was initially a little snippet/teaser before the official release of the Circe Saga, so the lyrics in the finished product are slightest different)
Aiden would be a really good Odysseus, honestly. i don't know about Ally, but i suspect that you won't have to wait too long until someone makes Aiden sing Epic. or, maybe Viester will even just choose to do it himself, who knows.

Top 10 Albums
Ooh this is a good one and probably gonna be mostly nostalgia because I never really listened to complete albums.
I was tagged by @merge-conflict and I am tagging @byberbunk2069 because I KNOW that bitch got albums.
These are not going to be in any particular order like by favorite or anything, just the first ones that really come up for me.
These first two are going to be multiple albums.
1. No Thanks! The 70s Punk Revolution
My mom got this for me for Christmas when I was 13 or 14 and it introduced to me old early punk. She yelled at me once for playing "Oh bondage, up yours!" by The X-Ray Specs too loud. I had already liked some 90s/00s punk from my sister and the radio and stuff I found on Limewire, but this really started it all. It came with a little booklet that had a little mini history and anecdotes about all the bands. I really liked Iggy Pop a lot.
Also, I thought I was hot shit and Different from other punks and would spend hours in a Yahoo IM punk music chatroom arguing with people older than me about what real punk music was.
2. This 15 disc set of 80s new wave I downloaded off of whatever torrent program
When I finally got my first iPod and iTunes was a thing, BitTorrent was also becoming more in vogue and replaced Limewire for me. I only torrented entire discographies. There was this 15 album set of 80s New Wave music. So, both of these compilations are very important because my taste in music will always be punk and 80s new wave at its core.
This set introduced me to Erasure (and so did my drum teacher), Army of Lovers, all the classic stereotypical 80s pop hits and even some dark wave bands!
3. The Postal Service - Give Up
This was one of the first albums I ever listened to all the way through. I listened to it on my CD player when I was flying to Minnesota to visit my online boyfriend when I was 16 to lose my virginity. (Don't ask, my mom let me get away with some weird ass shit). And it was the first album that made me realize, most albums should probably be listened to all the way through because they have a whole story. This one is about a guy dealing with a bad break up.
4. Reel Big Fish - Cheer Up!
I don't care if it makes my a ska poser, I love this album. I think it's one of the albums I bought with my own money from Hot Topic. I just love all the songs on it and loved the album art. Drunk Again is a song very near and dear to me. That and their cover of New York, New York are my favorites to absolutely belt out in the car.
5. Fatboy Slim - You've Come A Long Way Baby
One of THE first albums I EVER bought with my own money (okay when I say "own money" I mean my allowance). I had to have been 13-15? At the Fiesta Mall (RIP) Hot Topic in Arizona with one of my friends. One of the other albums I bought will be next.
I only like Right Here, Right Now, Rockafeller Skank, and In Heaven (still get "Fatboy Slim is fuckin' in heave / fuckin' in heaven / fuckin' in heaven" stuck in my head.)
6. Short Music for Short People - Fat Wreck Chords Compilation Album
The other CD I bought in that same shopping trip. I later would go on Limewire and find the full versions of songs. It introduced me to a lot of my fave punk bands and I still get some of the little bits stuck in my head from time to time.
It was a promotional album released by the studio Fat Wreck Chords. The gimmick was 101 artists with 30 second or less songs.
It also introduced me to Gwar!
Unfortunately, the album isn't on Spotify but a kind soul curated a playlist with all of the songs that were on the album.
7. Slipknot - Iowa
My first kinda real boyfriend gifted me this album and a custom mix CD that included songs like Seether by Veruca Salt, a song by Matthew Sweet I can't remember and some others. We watched Cabin Fever at his house. He held my hand walking me home and it was very sweaty and clammy. He eventually became my biggest bully at school lmao
I listened to this album all the time at school/on my way to school in middle school when I was depressed.
8. The Distillers - Coral Fang
A BFF I met in middle school who was SO fucking cool and always had funky makeup, she was never shy to express herself. I love her SO much. My first kiss with another girl was my other BFF who has been my BFF for the longest since we were like 8. And then the other one was the first girl I ever fooled around with. We were watching Totoro while she was fingering me in bed at her grandma's house. We also made out and she fingered me while watching Braveheart.
ANYWAY, she introduced me to this album on that same trip. I wanted to sing like Brody Dalle and always wanted her haircuts too.
An honorable mention here is Tribute by Tenacious D, we shared earbuds while listening to it on my CD player and swinging in the hammock on the roof during a nice breezy summer night.
9. Weezer - The Blue Album
I was a HUGE Weezer fan when I was younger and I'd draw their little funky W on all my notebooks next to the anarchy symbol lmao
This album just has the most songs I like. This, The Green Album, and Pinkerton were my faves.
You can find me at karaoke belting out Say It Ain't So.
10. Cake - Comfort Eagle
Shadow Stabbing was the opening track in the film Orange County and I really liked that move as a kid for some reason. I love Comfort Eagle, Fashion Nugget, and Pressure Chief about equally. But just like the Weezer album, this one had more songs I liked.
I was like top 0.1% of listeners for Cake on Spotify Wrapped for like three years in a row. I know all the lyrics to almost all of the songs on those three albums and probably have the most songs out of any artist on my driving playlist.

Hey! New fan here. I'm not quite sure where to start. There's so much content. Any tips?
Hello there, I'm so sorry, it took me an eternity to answer you...
First of all, welcome to the fandom! When it comes to managing the gigantic amount of BTS content that exists, I can only advise you to take your time: navigate the content, watch what catches your eye, and leave the rest, maybe for later. For a long time now, Big Hit has aimed to offer a variety of fan experiences so no matter who you are, you can find something you really enjoy. Maybe it'll be the documentaries following the group during world tours or the cooking game with chibi versions of the members, it's up to you.
I'll try to give a few tips depending on what you may be interested in:
1 - You're here for the music
YouTube, streaming apps, and albums are your friends!
An easy start is the Hybe playlist since it has all their main tracks. Then if there's a song you really like, you can try and go for the album.
If you want more info about a song/album, you can check my blog post about it, it should have lyrics translations, filming places, a list of the referenced works and nods to other things, as well as some more trivia.
Then it's time for the documentaries (they're listed here among other shows) and the special performances to witness unique versions of your favorite songs paired with incredible choreo. Lastly, collaborations with other artists complete their discography.
2 - You're here for the members' personality:
Their variety shows, behind-the-scene videos, and socials are the way to go!
The iconic one is of course Run BTS!, which started in 2015 and is still going strong nowadays with the Run Jin! version, a show packed with laughter, treason, and games no one understands. But the true OG remains the Bangtan Bombs (Eng trans). Each video is a time capsule of the boys at each point of their career.
Once you've gone through all that free stuff (should take you some time though), the paid content is the logical next step: from the adventurous Bon Voyage to the relaxing In The Soop, you once again have the freedom of choice.
3- You're here to collect:
Merch and characters are the rabbit hole you're looking for!
BTS merch, products advertised by BTS, HipHop Monsters, BT21, TinyTan, you can buy them all! If you're like... super duper rich
4 - You believe there are rabbits baking cakes on the moon:
Welcome to the theorists' world (ļ¾‰ā—•ćƒ®ā—•)ļ¾‰*:ļ½„ļ¾Ÿāœ§ a.k.a the BU.
It's pretty much dead now, some people expect new things for 2025 but there's no guarantee. It's a fiction set up in the BTS MVs that then got extended through web comics, novels, and a web series.
That should be it. I didn't mention a lot of things (the Festa, the solo works, the DVD packagesā€¦) but it should cover your bases and it's mostly free and easily available. I think you'll naturally come across the rest during your time in the fandom (there are tons of compilations and curated extracts). I think that's one of the nice things about BTS, you always discover something you had never heard before even when you're an experienced fan!
To stay up-to-date, don't hesitate to follow official accounts, as well as a few translators. You can also check r/bangtan on Reddit, there are often new fans asking for help/recommendations there, it's probably more complete than what I could come up with on my own.
And of course if you want to ask something else, I'm still here (and promise, I'll try to answer sooner)
See you! šŸ’œ

my good friend @puyopuyo milk tagged me in a music game :)
Ok. 4 Albums i been listening to a lot
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guilty Gear -Strive- - Necessary Discrepancy
I really like the entire Guilty Gear series ost and have been getting into them a lot, but this specific album that has some of the Season 1 pass DLC tracks is my favorite, Mirror of the World (Baiken), Trigger (Giovanna), Drift (Happy Chaos) and Like a Weed, Naturally, as a Matter of Course (Testament) go so fucking hard (and are great character lore/storytelling)
Drug Church - Cheer
Tumblr media
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Score/soundtrack)
Nostalgia aside I really love the song choices, it's got a nice blend of sorta indie vibes while also having classic rock, the Beck original stuff is great, having like 4 Sex Bob-omb songs (and they all sound exactly like a garbage indie band) is a gerat touch :) One of my favorite film scores, Juno is also pretty high up there
this is... JUNGLE
Compilation Jungle CD set from the 90s, super epic :) i def recommend trying to find a physical release or even just getting it on a program like Soulseeker, has an awesome blend of different artists both well-known (Peshay, LTJ Bukem) and more obscure, and the third album's 40 minute Mix is dope as shit, all of the tracks (including the mix!) show up on my Stream Jungle playlist
And yep, I do have a physical copy :) one of my proudest purchases in the past few years, i treasure the set a lot
Tumblr media
Hm..... I tag @cromerholt @charlottan @tumbwr @scwambledeggs and @hools :)

1980s Synthpop Playlist (YouTube)
Tiny update this week for this great and eclectic playlist that I'm slowly continuing to build up over on YouTube, with a somewhat obscure add from the legendary UK synthpop/new wave/post-punk/alternative dance band New Order. Back in 1986, these guys released their fourth album, Brotherhood, and on that album was a terrific piece of intense electro-influenced synthpop called "Angel Dust." However, in that same year, "Angel Dust" would receive a largely instrumental remix treatment too, called "Evil Dust," and that remix would never actually appear on a New Order album until a re-release of Brotherhood in 2008.
Where "Evil Dust" did first appear though, was on a 1986 various artist compilation called Funky Alternatives Volume 1 that was released in the UK on a label called Concrete Productions. And in 1988, the song would also re-appear on a CD-video single for one of New Order's biggest ever hits, "True Faith," of which only 6,000 copies were ever pressed. And then in the mid-to-late 90s, the song would find itself on a handful of other budget various artist comps too, including a 1997 double-disc called Hypnotic State, put out by the usually not great, California-based Hypnotic Records, which is where I first encountered it.
So, for such a highly beloved, revolutionary, and era-defining band, this New Order song currently only has just under 30,000 plays on YouTube across a handful of uploads, which is very low, considering just how massive and devoted their fanbase is!
New Order - "Evil Dust"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, as it currently stands, we're now at 11 songs in this playlist that end up totaling 55 minutes. And there's a couple terrific tracks on here that are nowhere to be found on Spotify too: the "Pecky Plus mix" of Glasgow band Secession's "The Magician," and one of my most favorite synthpop tunes of all time, the "Kalimba mix" of German band Cetu Javu's "Have in Mind," which feels like a quintessential closeout/roll-credits type of tune for any kind of 80s-set coming-of-age flick šŸ˜Š.
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!
Like what you hear? Follow me onĀ SpotifyĀ andĀ YouTubeĀ for more cool playlists and uploads!

my favorite indie songs
My favorite blog post we've been assigned so far this semester was to explain our favorite songs. I chose to rank my top five songs from the 2014 Tumblr Girl era because there are too many songs I like to compile into a top five list.
In this blog post, I want to compile my top five indie songs. I've always been a lover of indie and alternative since I've been able to stream my own music. Ever since I can remember I've listened to artists like Foster the People, MGMT, and The 1975. I'm not trying to seem "different" from everyone else, but I never was truly drawn to rap music growing up. I love the soft, abstract, and light sounds that make up the indie genre.
Here are my top five indie songs of all time...
#5 "Walking on a Dream" by Empire of the Sun
youtube
This is a classic indie anthem, especially in the summertime. "Walking on a Dream" is without a doubt their most popular song, but there are countless other indie classics from EOTS. This song reminds me specifically of my freshman year of high school. Football games, my first homecoming, and spending countless sleepless nights with friends (before we were all employed and busy).
#4 "Loving is Easy" by Rex Orange County
youtube
Like many other fans, this was the first song of Rex Orange County that I'd heard which made me a fan. The tune is so soft and catchy that there's quite literally no way to dislike it. Alex O'Connor's voice is distinguishable and perfect for indie ballads. "Loving is Easy" reminds me of 2018 when indie became the trend. Kanken backpacks, checkered Vans, scrunchies, and HydroFlasks were all the rave when this song was popularized. Other good Rex Orange Country songs are all from his older albums (in my opinion). During 2018 I was also listening to his songs "Apricot Princess", "Never Enough", and "Sunflower".
#3 "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn and John
youtube
I LOVE this song. No indie fan could ever hate it because of its sheer catchiness paired with light and airy sounds. I remember listening to this song in the car with my friend who'd recently gotten her license. We were all sophomores during the 2021 "return to normality" post-Covid school year and it was easily the best school year. We went to campus every other day, so each day that the majority of us didn't have school we'd spend its entirety together having sleepovers almost every night. As soon as we all began to get our licenses we felt so grown up and invincible. This song pays tribute to my friends and me as we lived in naivety and bliss. I think any of us would pay hundreds of dollars if it meant we could go back to being sixteen-year-old girls.
#2 "ILYSB" by LANY
youtube
Each one of these songs has a specific time in my life it's associated with. This song holds the most prominent memories for me. My best friend and I used to spend hours together listening to indie hits and reading...this is embarrassing...fanfiction of our favorite celebrities together. What else is there to do when you're eleven-year-old middle schoolers with iPhones and laptops that have unrestricted Internet access? We would sit side by side and share the cute stories we'd found with each other. It must make sense now as to why I'm so good at navigating Tumblr; I've been using it since I was eleven. Unrelated to being typical tween girls, this song will definitely be on my wedding playlist. I just think it's cute not only to sing to a partner but also to a best friend.
#1 Flashed Junk Mind by Milky Chance
youtube
What else is there to say besides I ABSOLUTELY LOVE EVERY LITTLE THING ABOUT THIS SONG! No, the lyricism isn't as sentimental as "ILYSB" but this was one of my top listened-to songs throughout my teens. I saw one of my celebrity crushes at the time (2017 Finn Wolfhard in case you were curious...specifically 2017) post about how he liked it, and of course, I had to follow suit. I doubted how much I'd like this song though. It's the ideal summer anthem with a funky beat and easy-to-follow lyrics. There's nothing to dislike about "Flashed Junk Mind" or Milky Chance as a band. If you like this song and want something a little slower, check out their song "Stolen Dance".
I love everything about the indie scene. The music, the fashion, and the emotions connected to it. Indie as a genre can provoke feelings of joy, heartbreak, and passion. These songs, along with others, will definitely be the songs I play loudly on a Sunday afternoon until my kids beg me to turn them down. Spoiler, I'll only turn them up.

I had such a fantastic time on my Celtic Invasion of County Mayo. I kept a personal blog on the trip that Iā€™ll publish in the coming weeks. You can also find pictures scattered across my different profile pages.
If youā€™re thinking of going, I think my favorite things were the cliffs on Achill Island. There were some stunning views. And my absolute favorite was Downpatrick Head. There were more stunning views, but there was a blowhole that went under the cliffs which made it interesting to see too.
Next month, Iā€™m launching a Kickstarter for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Iā€™m raising money for some album pins to promote the show. I would really LOVE your support.
You can follow the Kickstarter campaign through the website.

I got a private message from Bob on Patreon which I felt needed addressing in a public format:
ā€œMarc: I am going to end my Patreon sponsorship of your podcast. The cursing on your podcasts irritates me and I don't think it syncs up with celebrating Irish culture nor a fun, family oriented atmosphere.
One example: the Magic Dragon podcast Ā -Ā  - Ā Forkroot "Coyotes at the Dump" from Water & Shade, about 20:16 mark.
So rather than me being irritated and you being irritated at my reaction, I'll wish you the best, but I sure don't get where you are going.ā€
I did respond to Bobā€™s comment, but I thought Iā€™d address it here too. I did catch that explicit word in Forkrootā€™s song. Unfortunately, I was not listening closely to songs right before I headed out on vacation. They were the type of band that I did not expect to hear foul language from. So yes, I messed up.
I am terribly sorry for anyone who had to endure the explicit language. As you should know, I do my best to keep episodes of the podcast family - friendly. And as I told Bob, if you ever hear explicit language on the show, please please email me ASAP so that I can correct that error. I rely on your generosity to help me catch these problems.
I caught the language problem a day after the show went live and removed the song from the public version of the show. I left it in the Music - Only episode on Patreon, but that song was removed, also from the Celtic Top 20.

music asksā€” 5, 11, 13, 28!
oh, man. this was fun but i accidentally spent the last 3 hours excavating old playlists and re-listening to a bunch of stuff. also i think i forgot to eat dinner? heheheeeee
5:A song that needs to be played LOUD
The first thing that came to mind was the acoustic/live version of Cloud Cult's Chemicals Collide. This is not even my favorite song of theirs but I have this in my car and I always turn it way up so when the rest of the instruments come in around 1:45 I can get my hair fully on end.
youtube
11:A song that you never get tired of
The Killers - Human
youtube
13:One of your favorite 80ā€™s songs
okay this is kind of a silly answer because there are certainly other songs from the 80's that really hit with me as an adult. BUT, I'm gonna go on a lil' journey here. When I was like 11 or 12 I think, I spent at least one summer obsessively listening to four or five tapes on my dad's walkman. Just...constant. From what I remember, the albums in rotation were Paul Simon's Graceland, the absolute banger compilation Simply Mad About The Mouse, and I think some Jimmy Buffett? (side note I just googled to make sure I spelled his name correctly and seeing his full name on the wiki page gave me the same feeling of consternation as when I first heard the words Charles Entertainment Cheese strung together). But the most important one was without doubt the Beaches soundtrack (released in 1988 or 89). Now, to this day, I still have never actually seen Beaches. But I know that soundtrack down in my toes. My favorite song from it is and has always been: Otto Titsling. You're welcome.
youtube
28:A song by an artist with a voice that you love
oh god there are so many. i spent so much time cycling through a bunch of faves trying to pick, and really what I'm left with is decision fatigue and awe at the expressive power of the human voice. here's one: Nina Simone - I wish I knew how it would feel to be free.

My Favorite Records of 2022
Tumblr media
Hi. I made another list.
First thingā€™s first. I apologizeĀ for the lack of music recommendations and runs on my Instagram this year. Thrice had a pretty busy touring schedule, and with the kids back in school the local virus carousel was BRUTAL. Seemed like we got to sample a new strain of the crud literally every other week. Itā€™d rip its way through the house, weā€™d send the kids back to school, theyā€™d bring a new batch of snot home a few days later,Ā and itā€™d start up all over again. Rinse and repeat.Ā It was hard to get out there and run with all that going on. Also: Blame where blame is due ... I got a little lazy when I wasnā€™t picking up goopy Kleenex or horking up some crud of my own. Iā€ll be back next year. (Hopefully.)
An-y-waaaaay ...Ā
I did manage to listen to a lot of new music despite "the circumstancesā€, and I have compiled all of my favorites for you here. There's a pretty clear cut Top 5 this year based on play counts, but the rest of the list didnā€™t really make sense to rank because this shitā€™s really all subjective anyway. I broke the list into categories that made sense to me, at the time, for organizationā€™s sake. Each record has link to the band/labelā€™s Bandcamp or website, so please please PLEASE support the artists you love beyond just streaming their music.
Playlists with a song from each record are below. I know itā€™s a lot of music. I know itā€™s all over the place. I know you donā€™t have time to listen to five-and-a-half hours of music.Ā At the very least,Ā Iā€™d suggest at needle-dropping through the entire thing and earmarking some stuff to check out. Thatā€™s how I find a good chunk of this stuff.Ā
And please let me know what you dug this year and think I should check out!
Hope you all have a safe and happy holiday season. See you next year!
PLAYLISTS
My Favorites of 2022 Playlist (Spotify)
My Favorites of 2022 Playlist (Apple Music)
My Favorites of 2022 Playlist (Tidal)
THE TOP 5
Tumblr media
Elder - Innate Passage
No contest here. This is a clear cut #1 for me. Fifty-four minutes of absolutely glorious, wholly transcendental, life-affirming, dreamy/heavy metal-adjacent prog. As a musician, I can tell you firsthand how hard it is to write a long song that doesnā€™t *feel* long. These fellas routinely crank out high-quality 10-minute-plus jams that youā€™ll hope never end. Queue this up and take it for a run, a long walk, or a long drive and youā€™ll see what I mean. Itā€™s magical. And yes, it came out late in the year, but I havenā€™t been able to stop listening to it or thinking about it since, and I donā€™t see that changing for a long while.
Tumblr media
Meshuggah - Immutable
Itā€™s damn near impossible to find the right words for this band, let alone this record, but this is absolute wizardry, yet again, from the best metal band that has ever existed. Pure face-melting heaviness.Ā They routinely reset the bar for what heavy music can and should be, and Immutable is no exception. It might even be my favorite Meshuggah record ever.
Tumblr media
Museum of Light - Horizon
Ultra-heavy, sludgy, dynamic, meditative, push vs. pull, melody vs. dissonance post-rock in the vein of Kowloon Walled City, Shiner, Traindodge, and Torche. The songwriting is so clean and efficient, and the record as a whole is just a gorgeous, perfectly crafted arc. Itā€™s perfect.
Tumblr media
Holy Fawn - Dimensional Bleed
The heaviest, prettiest, most infectious batch of post-rock/metal Iā€™ve heard in a long while. Dynamic shifts that are pure catharsis. A band that has the ability to give you euphoric chills one minute, and bring you to tears the next, headbanging all the while. Their first LP blew me away, and I wasnā€™t sure they could top it, but they totally have.
Tumblr media
The Beths - Expert In A Dying Field
This record was an instant pick-me-up this year. A much-needed salve amidst all the stress and anxiety and depression the world can throw your way these days. Twelve preposterously hooky jams, that will put a smile on your face and a bounce in your step (even when the lyrical content dips into darker themes). It totally rules.

a playlist of songs from drarry fics
i get a lot of music from fic, whether a song or an artist is influential to a specific scene, or is even just simply mentioned by a character. some of them really stuck with me, so iā€™ve compiled a short list of my favorites :)
spotify playlist
1. Dreams - The Cranberries
Far From The Tree by aideomai
THAT scene, if you know you know! itā€™s so hard to talk about this fic without giving away spoilers, but letā€™s just say Draco dances to this song with a female character who totally stole my heart. itā€™s impossible for me to listen to this song and not daydream about a certain 90s themed party.
2. Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls
The Ordeal of Being Known by @lou-isfake
of course Harry put this song on a mixtape, of course he did. i just about lost my mind when i listened to it at the same time Draco did. and it just fits the narrative of this fic so well! i could have chosen from the many songs and artists mentioned in this fic, but for me this was a no-brainer.
3. Boy With a Coin - Iron & Wine
and a special mention:
4. You Are A Runner And I Am My Fathers Son - Wolf Parade
The Man Who Lived by @e-sebastian
sometimes an author just has to describe Draco turning up a song on his stereo in passing for me to immediately hop over to spotify. which is exactly how Boy With a Coin became one of my favorite songs! i also became obsessed with Wolf Parade last year after reading about Draco wearing their band t-shirt a couple of times in this fic, which is how i eventually discovered ā€˜You Are A Runnerā€™ and accidentally made that song a Drarry headcanon. read the lyrics and tell me you couldnā€™t write a fic based on that song!
5. Ray of Light - Madonna
(Un)wanted by @aibidil
in a fic centered around the theme of loss, this small moment of joy stood out to me. this fic also mentions a lot of music, but i just love the image of Harry and Hermione dancing like idiots to Madonna.
6. Age of Consent - New Order
Criminal by @the-sinking-ship
this is my favorite song from a chapter i consider to be a significant point in this fic. a high point of UST and drunken silliness (aka letting their guards down, i live for those moments), a change in dynamic that sets the rest of the story in motion. this song represents that for me, and gets an immediate hell yeah if it starts playing when i shuffle my entire spotify library.
7. Svefn-g-englar - Sigur RĆ³s
Let It Fall by @buildyourwalls
i honestly read this fic ages ago and it isnā€™t super fresh in my memory, but i remember how often music was incorporated into the story. it introduced me to this Icelandic band and every time i hear this song i have no clue what theyā€™re saying but i feel Dracoā€™s grief and guilt and uncertainty. i can imagine so clearly Harryā€™s longing and persistence. this band was only really mentioned in passing but it made its mark on me.
8. Modern Love - David Bowie
Modern Love by @tackytigerfic
i apparently live under a rock and was never properly introduced to David Bowie until i read this fic and looked up the song itā€™s title comes from. i wanted to put this song at the end of the playlist because it sounds like it could be on the soundtrack of a movie as it rolls to the credits (a quick google search tells me itā€™s been in a bunch of movie soundtracks lol). god, what i would do to see this fic as a movie. an absolute masterpiece by Tacky, a moving story about friendship with superb world-building. i could daydream about this fic to this song all day long.

this might be a big ask so it's okay if you can't answer it, but I was wondering if you could help me narrow down some old music to listen to, esp Frank Sinatra and Elvis since I think you have knowledge/reference with both of them? I'm interested in exploring things but there's A LOT and idk where to begin!
i love that you asked this, it's well-established that nothing in the world makes me happier than recommending/sharing music that is special to me, of any kind and from any time! it definitely is a LOT of content to take in, and hard to sort where to look because there's not only so much work across their catalogs, there are also all the compilation albums. if you have apple music, a simpler way to start is the essentials playlists, they don't include everything that i would myself, but they're good overviews! (ep, fs). and i'll use spotify links on these for you in case you have that instead <3
there are such a vast amount of individual songs that it's difficult to choose exactly where to point you!
with frank, first of all, nice 'n' easy is one of my favorite albums of all-time. like it's at the top of my list with red and rumours for Albums Needed to Understand Me. i think the best overview of his earlier years (when he was signed to capitol records, before he formed his own label, reprise), is this one. songs for swingin' lovers, in the wee small hours, and come fly with me are also fabulous. ring-a-ding-ding is so much fun. for an overview of his later career and the reprise years, nothing but the best has some great songs!
with elvis, i am actually doing whole album explorations myself! i've basically just always had a bunch of hits in my collection rather than full records. and my fave songs feel so obvious (can't help falling in love, love me tender, suspicious minds, fever, always on my mind, a little less conversation, i'm coming home, there's always me, it's now or never, that's all right, are you lonesome tonight, baby let's play house, surrender, burning love, that's all right...). the album if i can dream that they remastered/recorded with the royal philharmonic is absolutely gorgeous. this one is a collection of #1's, there's the recording of the '68 comeback special, something for everybody and from elvis in memphis are great.
i'd also highly recommend looking into ella fitzgerald if you like frank's music, because she's wonderful too. the industry was structured differently then - i used to have a wider breadth of knowledge that i could tell you about all of this, it's faded out of my head over the years, but you'll find many of the same songs recorded by different artists because songwriting and vocalists weren't quite as personally interconnected as they are now, and popular music was very much comprised of the songbook standards, so artists would essentially license songs from a given writer and put their own spin on them, rather than all releasing their own individual things. (this is notable, for example, with elvis and hound dog, which often is erroneously criticized. big mama thornton did record her rendition first, but the song was created by and belonged to two jewish songwriters, jerry leiber and mike stoller. it had already been covered multiple times (including by a white vocal group, which was how he encountered it initially) when elvis heard it, liked it, and chose to adapt/record it. (i searched around for info for you and there's more informed elaboration on that here!) a rich legacy of american music from the earlier crooners and jazz artists lies with jewish composers, both on radio and on broadway (and at the time, those often overlapped), so you'll find many of the singers recorded gershwin, irving berlin, lorenz hart, rodgers and hammerstein, sammy cahn, frank loesser, etc. and then there were other prominent writers like the incomparable cole porter (who has been covered sensationally by lady gaga and tony bennett!), johnny mercer, etc. then elvis was very inspired by and had immense respect for black artists/writers, r&b and gospel, so you get an infusion of all of those backgrounds and influences. (frank and elvis were both very openly supportive of artists of color around them and tried to help open doors, as marilyn famously did for ella as well. it was such a complex time, and i think it's important to keep those aspects in mind and remember the many voices and legacies that were playing their parts!) both of those men (and bing crosby, who helped pioneer the single, among other things), and their many contemporaries, transformed music as a whole, and that still resonates powerfully to this day, even in places where we might not realize it.
i hope this helps a little! šŸ’— the best thing you can do, honestly, is just dive in and explore, you're guaranteed to find gems and specific songs you love, and there's so much to spend time with and to enjoy.

[How do you sort your music?] also [A favorite piece of music memorabilia you own.]
1: I managed to complete my Nine Inch Nails' The Slip-era badge collection with two visits from my favorite record store. Another one could be my Consumer Electronics shirt I purchased through Philip Best (over e-mail). "Wear with pride", he said. And wear it I did. At least 40x.
2: These days, I make lots of personal / seasonal mixtapes for myself. That all started when I was in community college and had an idea to make a music diary of sorts. So I started compiling them based on when I discovered them: season of the year. It used to be that I'd combine songs from multiple cassette (radio) dubs into one 120-minute tape. Those allowed me to easily remember and reference specific songs, artists, or events should I ever want to write up on them. I still do it to this day. Now, it's all digital (MP3) and through my iPad.
The same for my radio show - and more. I take lots of discoveries from many music sites, upload them into said iPad, and throw them in based on genre. In there, there's a 'yellow' playlist where songs need auditioned and if they make the cut, they end up going to the 'green' playlist where I know what needs to be edited and finally played for broadcast.
