"Oh and by the way, if you're wondering what I was having for lunch that day, it was a ham sandwich with an apple and potato chips in a bag. I had a soda as well."
I liked the part with the exploration of the mind/body duality.
If 07/27/1978 has even one solitary flaw, it's the middle-endian date format used in its title. Happy Pipe Strip Day to all those who celebrate.

Dvořák 7 (1 submittal)
I saw Dvořak's 8th and 9th symphonies on the list and knew I couldn't let you get away with not including his 7th. It's a hot take, I know, but not only think do I think it bests the Czech maestro's two follow-ups — I also believe it to be the greatest symphony ever written. And I've heard a ton! It's a stormy piece, full of diminished sevenths, that weaves bold Germanic influence (particularly Brahms) and the rustic Czech folk music that defined Dvořak's earlier pieces.
(Timestamps from this recording, with Kubelik conducting the Bavarian Radio in 1978. I wish his '71 recording with the Berlin Philharmonic was on YT but I guess we can't have nice things.)
Dvořak starts off with low rumblings from the timpani and strings, and introduces a terrifically Brahmsian 6/8 theme. The first movement is amazing, if not perfect — setting a high bar for a symphony that somehow still gets *better with each movement*. The second movement, which begins at 11:41, is a phenomenal work of beauty from the moment you first hear the wistful clarinet theme. It first reaches a climax at 14:53, and then later at 18:24. Supposedly, part of the inspiration for this movement was the death of his mother, which makes it all the more impactful. The following scherzo (20:55) does an incredible job of balancing a melody and counter-melody, and the trio (23:27) helps make this one of the best scherzi out there, combining a light touch with a resonant underlying emotional current. However, as good as the first 3/4 of the symphony is, it pales in comparison to the magnificent finale vaguely in sonata form (28:17). Immediately heard is a rising octave theme that collapses to an almost frightening G♯ (tritone in D minor), later developed into a soaring arpeggio theme in the strings (29:07). A more serene secondary theme follows, before leading into the development, starting with the clarinet playing the arpeggio theme at 31:27. The initial octave theme and the arpeggio theme combine at 33:14 to mysterious effect. Finally, at 36:19, the piece ends with a dramatic — though not drawn-out — climax, famously concluding with a Picardy third.

character age headcanons!
♡ before you read | this is entirely my own interpretation of these character's ages, all based around how old I think they would be if they were all released in 2020! this dictates if I read for them or who I may write for the most, so anyone I've decided is under 18 gets strictly platonic/family-like relationships.
my headcanons are based on dialogue and character stories in game (ex. lisa being cyno's senior in school, neuvillette being a dragon, arlecchino being around 16 when freminet joined the house, etc.), and general assumptions to make up for centuries-old characters. any characters who would actually be dead irl are simply based on how old I think they present themselves.
I will be sticking to these ages strictly unless otherwise specified (high school or college aus/aus where age is specified/etc, but the age differences may not change)!
please respect my opinion, and I'd love to hear everyone else's age headcanons (or any others you may have) as well!!

Rollin' Rain and Hard Thunder - A Compilation Film by Swingin' Pig from Swingin' Pig (alternate account) on Vimeo.
PLEASE READ:
Here it is. I spent about a month editing this video together. I ripped the footage from a bootlegged tape of "Renaldo & Clara," a 1978 film that was edited by Howard Alk and Bob Dylan himself. Some snippets are from Martin Scorsese's incredible Netflix documentary "Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story." If you'd like to see "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "One More Cup of Coffee" (both of which are in this compilation) in 4K quality, do yourself a favor and watch it. There are other incredible performances in it that weren't in "Renaldo & Clara."
Anyway, as I was saying, this footage is from a source tape and some of the best quality versions that are available at the moment. Someday these performances will be rescanned, restored and released, but for now, this is what I have to work with visually. I did my best to correct the faded colors, correct the lighting, and sharpen the image a bit, but please realize that this was recorded from a television broadcast in the 1970s, and unaltered since then, so the images won't be perfect.
The audio is a different story, luckily. It took a long time to do, but I successfully overdubbed all of the original low-quality audio (it had a lot of hiss and was broadcasted in mono) with the soundboard recordings released on the Rolling Thunder Boxset. This took longer than I had expected because the footage and audio were sped up in the bootleg tape. But I eventually calculated the difference in speed and was able to synchronize them.
So, please enjoy this labor of love! Below is somewhat of a setlist and some of my personal thoughts on "standout" performances in this video.
CHAPTERS: 0:07 - It Ain't Me, Babe 5:26 - It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry [Excellent, rocking version] 8:32 - Fascinating historical commentary by David Blue 9:20 - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall [released on YouTube and on Netflix's "Rolling Thunder Revue" documentary] 14:15 - Romance in Durango 19:05 - Isis [Incredible performance, superior to the one in the documentary. His voice is sheer power and cuts like a knife. I dare say it's Dylan's best-filmed performance of the tour. The way he moves his arms and hands makes you feel like you're looking into another dimension] 24:20 - Never Let Me Go [feat. Joan Baez] 27:05 - Interesting footage of the revue visiting Niagra Falls 27:32 - One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below) [released on YouTube and on Netflix's "Rolling Thunder Revue" documentary] 31:35 - Sara [Gorgeous version with some beautiful footage I edited together in the beginning. The verse starting at 34:54 has incredible enunciation] 36:21 - Just Like a Woman [This is my favorite version of the song. Just watch listen to the whole thing, uninterrupted. It's just phenomenal. The bridge ("It was raining from the first") is some of the strongest singing I've ever heard from Dylan and then in the subsequent verse, he abruptly drops into this sweet tone. Just phenomenal] 40:32 - Knockin' On Heaven's Door [Beautiful version, superior to the one released in the Netflix documentary. The instrumental at 42:56 gives me chills] 44:35 - An emotional and cathartic ending.
Enjoy this gem while you can!

One of the most fascinating things in history is how often something was invented, some idea was realised, and… someone else had come up with the same idea at the same time. Known as multiple discovery, simultaneous invention, even (appealingly) “railroad time”--Alan Moore has hypothesised that there exists a plane called “ideaspace” where we visit to bring back ideas, and sometimes people come home with the same thing in their bag.
It’s what makes me think that had Tomohiro Nishikado not designed Space Invaders in 1978, someone else would have. Not exactly the same game, no, but something essentially similar. The history of video games is littered with rip-offs, but it’s also interestingly littered with almosts and not-quites, like people took a trip to idea space, tried to bring home the excalibur of ideas but only came home with a broken off bit of the hilt.
We’ve seen it already. Avalanche… isn’t Space Invaders. Air-Sea Battle, an Atari 2600 launch title features a few modes that… aren’t Space Invaders. But they’re not a world away.
I suppose that’s what makes Super Breakout so interesting. Nishikado was so obsessed with the original that in many ways Space Invaders was his “take” on Breakout, and when Ed Rotberg tasked with making a sequel to Breakout he would, mere months after Space Invaders was released in Japan, release a version of Breakout where in one mode, Progressive Breakout, the bricks slowly move down the screen towards the paddle.
(Heck, it’s starting to sound like Tetris, actually.)
Now, I can’t say for sure that Ed Rotberg hadn’t seen Space Invaders; but dates don’t line up with enough time for him to have seen it (very early) and to incorporate it into Super Breakout; it’s more likely to have been inspired by Avalanche if anything–tearing off the same bit of idea space.
It’s really with Super Breakout that you can see the genius leap that Tomohiro Nishikado made. He didn’t need the intermediate step of “bricks moving down the screen” or “falling rocks” he went straight to enemies marching forward, shooting lasers.
By comparison, Super Breakout feels every bit the incremental improvement, if you can call it that; of the three modes here only Progressive Breakout has the spark of anything, with the other two extremely nothingy ideas. Cavity is just Breakout, but there are two extra balls held captive in the brick formation, and when you release them you can try and keep them alive. Doubles is… well, you’ve got a second paddle further up the screen which matches your first paddle’s horizontal movement, and there are two balls straight away.
That’s it. Really both are things that would barely be interesting as temporary power-ups in a later clone, and the things you might expect (different block patterns, etc.) are nowhere to be seen–not that it particularly matters, the game is as brutal as ever with it’s tiny paddle (although I was able to get blocks to bounce off the top row in Progressive Breakout, so that’s something. I mean my score has reached the hundreds, now!)
Will I ever play it again? I’m less interested in playing this than I am the original, honestly.
Final Thought: The weirdest thing about Super Breakout was chosen for Kid Stuff Record’s “The Story of Atari” book and tape/7-inch sets, which recounted the stories of Atari games such as Asteroids and Star Raiders. Apparently written based entirely on the cover of the Atari 2600 version which features an astronaut. Seems like the kind of thing that probably should have stayed in ideaspace, but what do I know.

Dvořák 7
