03x07 - Blind Alleys, Clogged Roads
TW: Discussions of racism and suicide in terms of the 80's when this was written and recorded.
Ted tries his hardest to get a man to agree to let him use his office - for free - as a vantage point to watch over one of the boats at the docks for an official obbo. The freeholder is difficult and won't commit or give them a key.
A man enters to complain about racial abuse being directed at him and his family. He has reported it many times to both the police and council and claims that the police involvement makes it worse but it's never taken seriously. Unfortunately, his comprehension of English isn't the best so it takes a while for him to explain what he actually wants - to be moved to a new house. To do so the council has told him that he must keep reporting things to the police to get them to make that recommendation to allow him to be rehoused. The police claim they can't do anything and he has to keep contacting the council - it's typical buck-passing that still goes on now. He doesn't seem to understand that the police can't just say there and then that he has to be moved and Taffy has to explain that he has to tell the council directly that he wants to move. He tries to ask Viv to speak to him because Italy (her parents are Italian) is closer to Asia than the UK and he thinks that they'll understand each other more(!)
Roy and Mike are in court but it has been adjourned for an hour and a half because they didn't take information they weren't asked to take with them before they left the station. Their barrister is worried that it now looks like they have something to hide and are fiddling with evidence. Perhaps they'd learn to tell the police what they require from them before they get in the courtroom next time (!). They return to the station to retrieve the information they require.
When returning to the court, Roy's questionable driving rears its ugly head again after he has a prang with a taxi. Roy shouts that all taxi drivers are the same and that he deliberately cut across and braked. The bloke admits that he did brake, but that was to avoid doing what Roy did and running into the back of another vehicle. To be fair he isn't wrong - Roy was the one who overtook a line of traffic and went into the back of him at speed but... yeah. You try telling Roy that. Another claims he will report him and that there are witnesses. Roy scoffs and tells the group that taxi drivers are 'worse than the mafia'. The original driver takes a swing at him so Roy nicks him for breach of the peace after Mike stops him from actually hitting Roy. Another tells Roy he was driving too fast and is out of order so he nicks him for obstruction and sends Mike off to the court to get the case done whilst he deals with it. ♀️😂 He starts insisting that the taxi is going to go down the nick and be gone over and if anything is wrong he'll do him for it.
Jim is asked to deal with a drowning. The man has had a bang on the head which Ted claims could be due to the tide banging him about but Jim isn't so sure because the corpse was 'a real mess' and something doesn't add up. Ted suggests that likely means it wasn't suicide because those who attempt it invariably jump from the middle of the bridges to avoid hurting themselves or doing themselves an injury on obstacles or shallow water.
Jim tells Roy that the suicide is a bit dodgy so Roy asks Ted to step up for him. Ted points out he has to find a vantage point for an obbo but Roy snaps that this is more important so to find the time for it - and everything else.
Nick is called to a newsagent where two men are fighting and one is armed with a knife. He gets his hand slashed and uses his truncheon to break the fight up, calling for backup quickly. Nick and Yorkie bring the two men who were fighting back to the station.
June and Viv wind Reg up that there's 'juicy gossip' but won't tell him what it is to his frustration. Later at lunch they tell them they want a creche setting up because they're allowed one under PACE and that they might be considering trying for a baby each. "Like I said last night to Jack. There's no point trying for a baby til I've talked to Reg." "....Who's Jack?"
Jim tells Roy that things are still not adding up about the suicide. He was wearing an ill-fitting suit that didn't match and the labels cut out. The underwear is tatty, filthy and full of holes. There were strange things in his pockets that made out he lived at an address where he'd never been heard of. The current residents had been there over 12 years. There was also a postcard, the stamp has been used but there's no such address so how was it delivered? No one recognises any of the names either. There was a bus pass but no picture and it was really out of date. The 'suicide note' is very poetic and doesn't really sound like one - it's more a (not so) motivational quote you'd see posted on Facebook.
Jim tries to leave the station to follow up on another case and finds that he's pretty much jammed in due to a protest by black cabs who keep circling the station because of Roy's behaviour.
They're jamming up the one-way system as much as they can and causing no end of issues for the officers. When asked they tell them that "Galling Galloway" has acted out of order and they're protesting.
Taffy loses his temper when the Asian gentleman returns to report another attack and is replaced by Alec who tries to work it through with him. Bob says that it is a known rough area and everyone who lives there suffers and Alec suggests that he could be complaining just to get a better standard of accommodation.
As they turn to return to work, Taffy shouts for them to help and shouting is heard as a man tries to perform a citizen's arrest of a 13-year-old who graffitied his car. The boy is racist to the man saying he should stay in his own part of the world. Whilst they wait for the car to be brought around for Bob to look at, Bob calls the boy's father who insists he's going to take out a summons because they're illegally holding his boy in his opinion. Tom leads him out to see the graffiti and the father simply clips him around the ear for spelling it wrong (!).
Nick is angry that he can't press charges on the man who sliced his hand because the suspects are backing each other up, saying it was an accident that only happened because Nick put his hand on the knife which makes it two against one.
Jim brings in a tearful woman who has been assaulted and gets her a sweet tea. He locates Viv and asks her to speak to her, explaining that she's been mugged. Viv cleans her up and arranges to ring her office to let them know that she's been held up.
Finally, Ted manages to get the freeholder to agree to an obbo on Friday night but he is unable to trace any more information on the 'suicide' victim. Roy snaps at them all to redo what they've already done and make more effort. Ted says they won't get to the bottom of the murder/suicide because it's a setup and likely a Government department or Foreign Government getting rid of an embarrassment and disposing of him 'officially'.
June continues winding Reg up about wanting a creche and that it needs decent washable vinyl wallpaper and roller blinds or curtains and fully carpeted. Reg is concerned because there's not enough in the budget for what they want to do.
The next day, Viv is sent undercover to try and catch the mugger with Bob claiming that she almost makes him want to take up mugging.
Brian speaks to the Asian man and his wife about the racist attacks as another has happened when he was on his way home. Brian has met his match as his wife is not about to let things rest when he takes their statement.
Reg has a visitor who has been sent by the yard - a man has arrived to quote for redecorating the rec room!
A taxi drops off the driver who had an issue with Roy the day before. He has a petition of over 1000 signatures and he's going to make a formal complaint about him. In the meantime, a man tries to get into the taxi who has just dropped him off and the driver tells him he's not for hire. The man is having none of it and tries to press him to take his fare to the stock exchange. The driver who had issues with Roy threatens to drag him out so Bob urges him to be sensible.
Viv walks around the London Castle area in an attempt to catch the eye of the mugger. Initially no one bites but, finally, a man in a motorbike helmet charges her and Viv fights with him. He manages to get away and Jim chases after him into a tube station but runs the wrong direction which initially lets him get away but he tracks him down on tube train and manages to drag him off as they fight.
Tom claims to Brian that Nick won't get a prosecution against the man who slashed his hand because it's the word of two against one and one - the victim - was sat bleeding from a wound that later needed 12 stitches caused by his brother-in-law and still said that Nick only got cut because he caught the knife with his hand rather than actually being lashed out at. Brian insists that Tom press charges against the man for cutting Nick. Tom snaps that he's in charge of the custody office and Brian says he's in charge of the station. "Shaw went above my head, I can go above yours!" He calls Nick into his office and reads him the riot act about daring to go above his head to Brian Kite.
The pathologist can only tell them that the man was hit once on the head with a very heavy item and it killed him. There is no record with missing persons and no alcohol in his system. There was a packet of cigarettes on him but he wasn't a smoker and there were ticket stubs all paid in cash in his pockets so he didn't seem like a lonely man.
Thankfully the man who they had in court at the start of the episode that required the books that Roy and Mike weren't told would be needed has been found guilty. Mike is in Roy's bad books still however for using one of the taxi's present to get to the court - even though he was under a time constraint!
Bob tells Roy to call the taxi thing an accident and back off from charging the man because when it reaches court the taxi drivers will all stick together. "You been talking to Kite?" Roy frowns, Brian having told him the exact same thing. "What you going to do? Blame it on the Tory Government? (ha! rather topical for the real world right now too!)
Roy is called back to the station to speak to Brownlow. In the office is a Super from Special Branch - he's told to drop the 'suicide' because Special Branch is going to take it over. He's also ordered to hand in all paperwork... it would seem Ted had been onto something claiming it was something official.
June and Viv are in fits as they tell Bob about Reg's terror at them having children. June says Reg had lectured her about how improper it was to bring a baby into the world out of wedlock. "So we said alright Reg, we'll have the wedding in the Federation room." Viv laughs. June smirks, "I said, I'm not having a party in there, not with those disgusting walls and carpets." Thanks to being crafty, the girls have managed to get the recreation room redecorated!
