The Vignette Problem and a Potential Fix - An entirely Undirected Frustration Ramble

OK- Preface, this is a ramble in the key of meta, NOT a well thought out considered meta in inself. please read accordingly

Lets be honest, Vignette was a shit MC for this story

When measuring Vignette up against the other MC’s (Philo, Tourmaline, Imogen, Agreus), she comes off as infantile and naive, framed by her very teenage rebellion, her obligatory hetero romance with Philo (which is at least passably developed if lacking chemistry) and her poorly developed ‘childhood sweetheart runner-up’ romance with Tourmaline. Her convictions never really felt like core values, but rather exercises in reactionary frustrations. She is not a mover and shaker of this conflict, she is someone caught up in the motions. To be more unkind, Vignette is a plot drain, fixated on moral absolutes and flipflopping between personal/romantic allegiance in a way that makes her seem like a child, when compared to her firmly grey counterparts (namely Tourmaline and Philo). Scenes with her and Tourmaline or Philo almost border on uncomfortable because of how emotionally immature she is in comparison to the two of them- where they deal in complex moral quandarys, she deals in snap judgments and ultimatums..

Characterwise, Vignette doesn't read like a 1st gen war refuge (in the fantastical sense). Not that there is a right or wrong way to behave as a refugee, but there is a notable gap in her understanding of Fae relations to the Burge that make no sense for her age, education, previous relationship with a half fae Burgish soldier and plot relation to the conflict (as a member or Tirnanoc academia and later as a director of refugees to safety) Tourmaline on the other hand does read as a 1st gen refugee- she comes across as that mixture of scarred, ferrety, grateful, and yet cyclical persona that makes sense. Philo as a scarred veteran also fits with Tourmaline’s generation in this sense- he’s haunted, jaded, empathetic, hunting for belonging as a mixed species person caught adrift between his heritage and his socialization. Tourmaline and Philo read like they are from the same generation of a conflict. It’s frustrating we don’t see more of the two of them because in a non-romantic sense they bounce really well, and I would love to see a world without V where the two of them have to team up and come to see each others worlds- Philo’s hidden ancestry, and Tourmaline’s more brutal dark connection to fae magic

Vignette reads like the 2nd generation. That’s a powerful story in its own right- the frustration and restlessness of a person born outside their heritage, acutely aware of the rich cultural heritage they are owed, but both unable to access it, and dammed and ridiculed for embracing it. It’s a valid story BUT a very different one from that of a brand new refugee. This 100% wouldn’t automatically make her a bad character, but when placing her against Tourmaline and Philo, her reactions and understanding of her political situation often read as hopelessly simplistic and idealistic. If you separate her by generation though I think they would have been more nuanced- a display of nationalistic frustration in the place of complacency. Vignette comes across like the child of refugees who feels cheated out of their rightful identity, angry about being forced to live a small life on the fringe, when she knows the beauty and power of her for-bearers. It’s a characterization that works, but not in the context of placing Tourmaline and Philo as her contemplates

I think it would have worked better if Vignette was Philo’s daughter, her mother being Philo’s lover and Tourmaline's bestfriend/lover. That would account for her dissonant perspective from the war generation of Philo and Tourmaline, while also making space for her difficult personal connection to the two if her mother/Philo & Vignettes lover had died after Philo left.

Is Rose Quartz a war criminal? I see that term bandied around so much for her that it feels like a given that she's a war criminal, but I'm wracking my brain and I can't... actually recall any real war crimes that she committed.

I'm talking objective war crimes, by the way, not war crimes by Homeworld's (the fascist government's) standards. It's literally legal for the Diamonds to shatter (split a person's soul into shards of ceaseless torture) their citizens, I don't value their definition of morality, lol.

How is it canon when it’s unrequited u make no sense whatsoever is it delusion or memes

first of all- 'unrequited' means distinctly not returned. Dean's stunned lack of response in the moment was not a rejection of Cas' feelings, and should not be considered as such. therefore, Destiel cannot be considered unrequited.

second of all- Cas' love for Dean has been confirmed many times on multiple different occasions, by both Misha and Jensen themselves, as well as Robert Berens, to be romantic love. that is not up for interpretation. based on that fact alone, it is canon. whether or not Dean's feelings are ever explicitly and/or verbally expressed does not change the fact that Castiel is canonically in love with Dean Winchester. that makes it c a n o n.

third of all- the fact that Dean's feelings have not yet been verbally confirmed is of very little consequence when compared to the monumental amount of very compelling evidence suggesting that he does, in fact, return Cas' feelings, even if Dean himself hadn't yet realized it at the time of the confession.

if you have watched this show and actually picked up on the frankly staggering amount of very clear context clues, it is quite obvious that, aside from his brother, Castiel is the most important person in Dean's life, full stop.

i don't have the patience right now to list every single instance that suggests Dean's feelings for Cas are mutual; there are far too many. but i will remind you of the most significant ones:

when Cas died in the s12 finale, Dean mourned that loss unlike he had done with any other character death up to that point in the series, and the way in which Dean grieved Cas was very purposefully portrayed in such an undeniably different way than how Sam grieved Cas. even the loss of his mother seemed to almost pale in comparison to the immense weight of Cas' sudden absence in Dean's life. Dean mourned Cas like a spouse rather than like a brother or family member; it is known as the 'widower arc' for a reason.

Dean was nearly suicidal up until the very moment he learned that Cas had come back. when Cas inevitably returned, the sudden change in Dean's demeanor was so immediately apparent and extreme, it gave Sam whiplash.

in the final seasons, Dean no longer showed much if any interest in having any romantic or sexual partners, a stark contrast to earlier seasons. the last committed relationship he had was with Lisa, which was quite a few years prior. this is in direct contrast to Sam, who had several romantic love interests over the course of the show (Jess, Madison, Ruby, Amelia, Eileen). the role of closest person to Dean other than Sam was always filled by Cas, the only difference being the lack of romantic label.

Dean and Cas' relationship has been directly paralleled in multiple different instances with canonically romantic couples, the most significant ones being: Sam and Jess, Cain and his wife Collette, John and Mary (during the widower arc), and Sam and Eileen in the final season.

additionally, directly following Cas being taken by the empty, Sam's attempts to call Dean were completely ignored, despite Dean knowing that his brother needed confirmation that he was alive. the sole thing occupying Dean's mind at that moment was Castiel; nothing else in the world mattered.

like genuinely, i don't think act 1 Silco would have ever forgiven Vander. Nor should he. He forgave him in the alternate universe, and at the very least, Silco is a professional... he'll keep their personal things away from the children. Maybe it's more complex than that. Maybe he still receives treatment. Maybe they still have terrible days. We don't see them, it's not our business anymore.

But it IS important to note that in that universe, shimmer isn't a thing. It isn't adding to Silco's paranoia and intensity. They have access to better resources, they have hope.

act 1 Silco couldn't. The universe of Arcane couldn't be that way. the circumstances were different. not just from Vi dying, even before that. Without hextech and without shimmer, life was different for everyone.

That's why it's a completely different universe. It's not What Could Have Been if Silco had forgiven Vander, it's what could have been if EVERYTHING had been different.

We can theorize on what happened, what reason Silco had to forgive Vander, but... I think Jinx was wrong, the letter wouldn't have been enough.

But it was in that other universe. Because there was hope in that universe.

If I see one more person saying that the castle moves in the book because Howl is evading taxes I'm gonna force every Ghibli fan to READ THE BOOK. Or at the very least not post about it online.

For all we know Howl pays MORE taxes as a result of having multiple residences and living in TWO UNIVERSES.

This also applies to people who say Diana Wynne Jones was Welsh, or the striking amount of people with the false recollection that she came up with the claim that the movie is how Howl tells it, and the book is how Sophie tells it.

These people spread rumours better than Michael in Market Chipping.

can we get a katelyn mackenzie who isn't just there as a plot device or an addition to aaron's character. can we get a katelyn mackenzie who isn't just there for good advice and comfort, can we get a katelyn who doesn't just calm people down and always have a plan and she gets angry when she's lied to or ignored and she argues back and she doesn't always know what to do or how to help and she loves aaron but she also knows what she's worth and she won't settle for less than that. i know she's not much in canon but we have the power of fanfiction we can make her so much more. let her speak. let her be a character. let her play a role that isn't just the girlfriend of the side character or the pissy ex or the fridged love interest. let her not forgive and not be perfect and let her fight back and let her be angry and let her not always fix aaron's problems for him What i'm saying is katelyn mackenzie deserves better

Immensely goofy how Tim Drake was explicitly intended to be/written with the purpose of being a much more likable and palatable Robin than Jason and then right out the gate in A Lonely Place of Dying we get the twofer of him going "WHOA really you mean it was the totally respectable guy openly trying to buy out the circus and praying on its downfall who was sabotaging it, NOT the employee spiraling over the prospect of losing his job who Dick explicitly told me it wasn't? Anyone would've guessed it was that clown chump, you're an awesome detective Dick!" and the infamous (to me) "If one cop gets taken out it doesn't matter because the police system is so expansive and unstoppable that it's become a faceless symbol more than a group of individuals, and that's what justice is. We need to be like THEM as heroes :D" Like I think overall he's decent enough but did they even try with that introduction? In what way was this the best shot at likable?
