Hearts and Other Heavy Burdens
Rating: Teen Pairing: Vashwood Summary:
Wolfwood’s entire life has been a curse. From the day he was born to the day he was taken in by Chapel, he’s only had a few respites and none of them lasted. So sure, why not add on an actual honest-to-gods curse by some confused, maniacal loser with brother issues. His life might as well have been over after that since he had no home, no future, and no hope—if not for a friendly tall girl of a spirit and her red-cloaked friend. Though said friend does look suspiciously like the guy who cursed him… Either way, one thing’s for sure: Whether he likes it or not, he’s in for a wild ride.
(An AU loosely inspired by the Howl’s Moving Castle book, though very much its own thing! Updates every Sunday.)

Heyy everyone! Dropping the latest Sketch-a-Wish, one that has been repeatedly requested by my lovely patreon members-- with a caveat! There were frequent requests for two scenes: one where Sophie tells Howl to find her in the future, and the 'There you are' scene in the beginning. I decided to bridge the gap between these two scenes and show something we've never seen before - the secret moment when Howl tracks Sophie down using matching ring he gave to Sophie. If you'll notice in the movie, it's sparkling just as he puts his hand on her shoulder. I thought it would be a fun 'what if' fanart for this off-screen theory. :)

One of my favorite parts about the writing of Howl's Moving Castle is how easy it is to write off all the things from our world at first as him just being a weird wizard™ (also thanks to bestie @jutenium for spotting this I wouldn't put it like that without you!!/pos). Sure, Sophie uses weird descriptions, but readers have every reason to believe them because of the way Howl is presented as a character. When Sophie says he wrote with a quill that doesn't need an ink, you wouldn't think it was actually a ballpoint pen, you would think Howl had just enchanted his quill so that it wouldn't need ink! When she adds that she can't make out a single word, you think he has matchingly terrible handwriting, but in fact Sophie has simply never seen a pen writing. When she sees the mysterious labels on his books, you think he's keeping a lot of obscure magical literature, but it's really just an encyclopedia and a guide like "Top 10 Rugby Tips." When Sophie notices the bottles in Howl's bathtub, you think they're some kind of magical jars where he keeps girl's hearts, but I'm almost certain that they're just 'Dove' and 'Head and Shoulders' that he's enhanced with his spells and put silly labels on. When you read Calicifer singing a song in a language Sophie doesn't understand, you think it's some kind of ancient cipher or code, but it's actually just a rugby song in Welsh that Howl sings when he's drunk. And finally, when you see the terrifying black door, which is completely shrouded in darkness, you imagine a passage to an eerie, mythical place, similar to what Miyazaki showed us - but it's just fucking Wales.

I do want a new adaptation of Howl's moving Castle with Sophie's world being a fairy tale world with dresses that looks vaguely medieval and parodies and/or actual characters that might be referencing other fairy tales in the background (like during May day when Sophie is out for the first time in months, you could see a little girl in red with a basket going ✨ somewhere ✨in the background)
...and then you get to Howl's and some of his clothes are a bit off and he is actually using a very modern pen and if we are modernizing it, there is a phone lying around there or you can see the video games he is making for his nephew in the background but you just put it as fun world building still until you get hit in the face with steel chair with the Wales reveal.
I think it would be fun !

A lil practice in perspective with this piece mostly, so here's Howl and Sophie, who I designed based 50/50 on their book and movie counterparts! I actually would love to revisit this piece and paring in the future, since the book is one of my all time favs
