okay as far as season four of teen wolf goes i am like. very confused as to what the fuck kate's motive even is? like she came back from the dead and she's screwing with derek and making her berserker servants kill people but like. WHY. ik there was like that one scene with peter where it was implied she wanted to make the argents great again (aka reinstate them to their former genocidal werewolf-hunting glory) but that doesn't make complete sense to me when she herself is now a shifter. or like maybe she's just that hypocritical idk (wouldn't put it past her). but even with that idk it doesn't make SENSE. why did she kill garrett and violet? why did she try to make scott's pack kill him? why did she do all that just to get derek to open the vault? literally what the fuck
if anyone has thoughts please share im at a loss here

50+ Light Novels Celebration: An Overview Of The Shite I've Read Thus Far
I've read a few novels in the past few weeks. 53, to be precise, including the ones I picked up before I started really devouring them in July. With my 50th entry in My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer, I figured I could make a list of everything thus far, grouped into a few general categories. This is that list! I might turn this into a full page on this blog at some point, but for now it's a post.
Let's dive in!
Recommendation Tier [12]
These are novels I'd actively recommend people read. This category is further split up into different sub-categories for the lols, but it's the only one like that. These are all pretty good! Probably the thing to note is that these are according to my tastes, which are pretty niche compared to the average LN enjoyer, I'd bet.
Recommendation Tier: Must-Read [1]
Goodbye Otherworld, See You Tomorrow
Recommendation Tier: Absolutely Batshit (/positive)
A Wild Last Boss Appeared!
Recommendation Tier: Fantasies About Being a Competent Adult Doing Honest, Meaningful Work (And Finding Romance)
Housekeeping Mage in Another World
Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools
The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent
Recommendation Tier: Competent Protagonists Facing Challenges and Adventures
My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter
Secrets of the Silent Witch
Recommendation Tier: Overpowered Teens From Another World Are Kind To Others and Make Family
Making Magic: The Sweet Life of a Witch Who Knows an Infinite MP Loophole
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear
Recommendation Tier: Enemies To Lovers
The Apothecary Witch Turned Divorce Agent
The Disowned Queen’s Consulting Detective Agency
Pretty Good, But Not Like The Above (Or There's Some Asterisks) Tier [11]
I like to think I have category names that describe their contents. These novels were all pretty good or outstanding, but there's something about them that makes me hesitate to recommend them (i.e, rampant transphobia or a romance that fails to stick the landing the way I want, or some other hesitation). These are all just ordered alphabetically from now on, by the way. Too lazy to actually come up with a coherent quality ordering.
7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy?
A Lily Blooms in Another World
Banished From the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside
Did I Seriously Just Get Reincarnated as My Gag Character!?
Hello, I Am a Witch and my Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion
ROLL OVER AND DIE: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword!
Sexiled: My Sexist Party Leader Kicked Me Out, So I Teamed Up With a Mythical Sorceress!
She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man
The Sorcerer's Receptionist
The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash
The White Cat's Revenge as Plotted From the Dragon King's Lap
Anime Nonsense Tier [13]
These are alright. I didn't hate them, but they sure were books I read. Some of these are better than others -- Bofuri is a standout -- but I can't justify putting them in the same tier as ROLL OVER AND DIE so they go here. Honestly Bofuri's mainly here because the MMO world makes me mad every time I think about it.
A Royal Rebound: Forget My Ex-Fiancé, I'm Being Pampered by the Prince!
Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense
Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life!?
The Dragon's Soulmate is a Mushroom Princess
The Drab Princess, the Black Cat, and the Satisfying Break-Up
Forget Being the Villainess, I Want to Be An Adventurer!
Hazure Skill: The Guild Member with a Worthless Skill Is Actually a Legendary Assassin
In the Land of Leadale
Loner Life in Another World
A Tale of the Secret Saint
The Emperor’s Lady-in-Waiting Is Wanted as a Bride
The Invisible Wallflower Marries an Upstart Aristocrat After Getting Dumped for Her Sister!
Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord
This Shit Sucked Tier [12]
This shit sucked -- for one reason or another, I either didn't like it when I finished it, or I dropped it outright. I don't drop stuff easily, but some of this stuff just had me so fed up with everything that I can't muster the energy to go back to them.
As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World
Cross-Dressing Villainess Cecilia Sylvie
Can Someone Please Explain What's Going On?!
The Eccentric Master and the Fake Lover
I Refuse to Be Your Enemy!
I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage
I Shall Survive Using Potions
Prison Life is Easy for a Villainess
Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement
Saint? No! I'm Just a Passing Beast Tamer
The Reincarnated Villainess Won't Seek Revenge
The Strongest Knight is Actually a Cross-Dressing Noblewoman!?
Oh Dear Lord, What The Fuck Tier [5]
This is the category for the novels worse than those in the This Shit Sucked tier. There's only 5, but each of these had some nonsense in it where I probably yelled in my GC and/or tweeted about it and/or wrote scathing reviews of it in my reviews post. I don't often drop a series in the middle of a book, but these are the exceptions.
The 100th Time's the Charm: She Was Executed 99 Times, so How Did She Unlock "Super Love" Mode?!
The Abandoned Heiress Gets Rich with Alchemy and Scores an Enemy General
The Alchemist who Survived Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life
The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor
The Werewolf Count and the Trickster Tailor

The Brits Dilemma
” Prompt: Harry & Y/N go to the Brits. It’s the first time they’ve been away from their baby. Y/N is struggling but doesn’t want to ruin the night for her husband.
Word Count: 1.8 k +
Warnings: Depictions of breastfeeding
+++++++
The award show was going well. It was the first time Y/N had been out in nearly three months besides a few brunch dates and grocery shopping.
Usually, she was pretty confident in what she wore to accompany her husband to all of these flashy events - but not tonight.
Her bump had deflated but she was still attempting to get rid of the stubborn pouch that stayed after the baby had been born. It wasn’t anything out of the norm - just still trying to lose it.
She was breastfeeding and her breasts were much larger than before. They felt heavy and too big for her body. Not to mention, they were constantly swollen and achey. Pads were a must so she doesn’t leak through the tight satin black dress.
The dress was a beautiful custom design by Gucci that complimented Harry’s sharp suit but nothing felt right. It was digging into her sides and made it hard for her to sit on her chair.
The Brits were held in the O2 Arena which wasn’t very far from their London home but she felt like she was lightyears away from her baby. Even though she knew Sasha was in good hands with Anne.
Y/N was so proud of Harry for being up for five - yes, five different awards. It was a record for him and she didn’t want to let him down by complaining. It was his night. He’s been such a devote father - he deserved a break too.
So she swallowed down the anxiety she was feeling about being away from their little newborn for the night along with her worries about her changing body.
There was milling about between the tables before the show got started. Harry had people coming up him constantly - congratulating him on the album, the nominations, the baby.
Married life and fatherhood suited him well. A dazzling wedding band on his left ring finger, a necklace with an S for his daughter, along with her name freshly inked on right above his butterfly tattoo.
The open jacket he wore with is his barely buttoned dress shirt displayed it proudly. It was beautiful, done delicately in a timeless cursive. The font match his wife name that was tattooed on his hand.
He couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t excited to have a night out with his wife. He had Jeff booked a hotel for the night to have some alone time with you while his mum got to enjoy a night with her only grandchild.
Y/N was counting down the hours up until tomorrow when she could go home to see her baby. She should really tell Harry that she wants to go home and not out to a club and the hotel.
But the it just slowly starts to deteriorate further when a bald, plump business exec comes to greet the two of you. He gives his warm wishes about the birth of your child before smiling at Y/N and stating, “The baby weight will come off soon enough.”
Her throat closes up a bit and she self-consciously tries to push her chair closer to the table. It was the last thing that she needed to hear. Confirming all of her worst insecurities.
Harry glares at the man before turning to his wife, “Hey, you look s’perfect, my love. I’m so bloody lucky you’re mine.”
He’s truly trying his hardest to bring a smile to her face but he notices it’s never quite meeting her eyes.
It get even worse when Harry gets his first award, male solo artist of the year.
As she’s standing and clapping for him - she realizes she’s beginning to leak through her nipple inserts.
Y/N excuses herself in the middle of his acceptance speech to rush through the string of tables - out into the corridor. The last thing she wanted to do was for it to show up on a very expensive dress.
The echo of his voice can still be heard, “Love to thank my beautiful wife who makes writing sappy love songs easy and was the main inspiration for my recent album. She also just gave birth to our beautiful baby.....”
She feels awful when she tunes him out, finding the bathroom and hurriedly rushing in. There’s a gorgeous woman standing at the sink, washing their hands.
Fucking Taylor Swift.
Any other time it’d be awkward and uncomfortable - running into an ex who wrote multiple songs about her husband.
But she couldn’t careless right now, “Hi, erm, this is really weird but could you unzip my dress? I’m leaking and - shit that was way too much information.”
But Taylor smiles kindly, “No! It’s okay, totally. No worries. Congratulations on your baby - you look so hot tonight.”
Y/N laughs and thanks her for unzipping the dress before going into a stall and locking the door. She slides her bra straps off her shoulders and disposes of the soaked pad in the sanitary bin.
Luckily, she has a clean burp rag that she gently swipes at her breast - wincing as it brushes against her swollen nipples. Even the soft fabric felt too rough on them.
It’s a minute or two before the bathroom door swings open, “Y/N? Lovie? Are you in ‘ere?”
She feels guilt at the panic in his voice. Managing to croak out, “I’m in here,” before leaning forward to unlock the door.
Harry waste no time in sliding into the stall before latching the lock again. Taking in the sight of his wife in front of him.
“I-I started leaking, M’sorry,” Y/N whispers, she has no reason to feel embarrassed but she is. “I missed your speech.”
“None of that, baby. I’ll give more speeches for you to hear - I only care that you’re okay. I’m sorry y’leakin, lemme help you, pet.”
In true Harry fashion, he takes the rag and turns on the sink - running it under warm water before carefully cleaning his wife up.
“Are they botherin’ you? They look irritated and super swollen, darling,” Harry frowns, a very gentle thumb coming to brush against her nipple. Then cupping her swollen breast in his hand, thumb rubbing at the pink skin.
“Just a little bit,” She lies, they’re absolutely on fire with chafing and skin irritation from the bra she’s wearing. She never thought she’d miss her nursing bras and sports bras this much.
He nods and helps place new inserts in her bra. Who’d think this is what Harry would be doing between accepting awards. Everyone unassuming in the arena.
**
Harry has been four for four thus far into the ceremony. They’d only had him go up and give two acceptance speeches. His hand firmly planted on his wife’s thigh throughout.
When he went up for his second award, the camera zooms in and the crowd coos are he plants a kiss on his wife’s lips before pulling her into a hug - whispering something into her ear the audience can’t hear.
He was much more focused on his wife. He could read her fairly well - he’d like to think. Enough to know she’s having much fun. But he didn’t want to bring it up and make her feel bad.
Harry sees the way she keeps adjusting her bra, fidgets with his rings when his hands in his lap, and not even really looking up while one of her favorite artist - Dua Lipa -performs.
Y/N loved a good party before the baby. So Harry was hoping going to the Brits afterparty would make her feel better and then going back to their hotel room for a some alone time.
**
Y/N has been increasingly quiet when they’re exiting the arena after the final award artist of the year - which Harry had also won.
He was on cloud nine and admittedly a little distracted as he joked and laughed with a small group of friends on the way out.
“Alright, should we all just pile into a cab for the ride to the party?” Nick Grimshaw asks everyone.
Everyone is in agreement - including Harry -as he calls to order one - standing in the blocked off area away from fans and paparazzi.
Y/N wants to tell him she wants to go home to Sasha but when she hears him say, “Can’t wait to get to Exhibit - haven’t been there in forever. One of my favorite clubs.”
She bites her tongue. Harry is enjoying his night out - why can’t she?
In the taxi, she’s sat on Harry’s lap as they make their way to the club. His one hand is on her inner thigh and the other is on her waist holding her steady.
In the morning, she’ll blame her post-partum hormones and anxiety. But she doesn’t even realizing her eyes are filling with tears and when she blinks they spill down her face.
She wouldn’t feel as embarrassed if she wasn’t in the car full of literal celebrities who are filled with adrenaline and excitement. Chattering and drinking from little liquor bottles they’d snuck in their jackets and clutches.
“Y/N, are you alright?” Rita Ora asks from her seat - noticing the streaks ruining your makeup.
She nods pathetically, wiping at her eyes but Harry is turning her to face him. His bright green eyes filled with concern as he studies her face.
The previously very obnoxiously loud cab becomes silent as they try to give the couple a semblance of non-existent privacy.
“What’s happening, dove? Are you hurting?” Harry panics, coming to wipe the smeared makeup away.
“I don’t want to go to the club,” Y/N sniffles, squeezing her eyes shut at how embarrassed she is of her behavior. She would usually never act this way - especially in public. And Harry knows that so it makes him even more concerned.
“That’s okay, pet. We can go have a night in, when the cab stops - we can uber back to the hotel,” Harry soothes, surprised when that brings on fresh tears.
“N-no, I want to go home. I miss the baby, I want to- need to see our baby. I-I can’t do this. My anxiety is through the roof, Harry. What if she can’t sleep? Or isn’t taking the bottle?”
“Baby, breathe, breathe. We can go home. I miss the bub terribly too. Have been worried about her all night.”
Harry tugs his wife into his chest further - tucking her head into his neck as he shoots his friends grateful looks. They all nod, sympathetic and understanding - despite them not having kids of their own.
**
“I ruined your night,” Y/N says softly in the back of the uber home. “I leaked during the show; cried in front of all your friends.”
Harry takes her chin gentle but firm until she meets his gaze, “You didn’t ruin anything f’me. All I care about is you and the baby - not some stupid award ceremony or party.”
He continues on, “You just gave us Sasha three months ago - y’bloody amazing. Best mum, best wife. Sexiest too - know you don’t think that right now but your body literally grew my baby. I get a hard-on everytime I see you.”
They both laugh, Y/N leaning forward to capture her husbands lips in a meaningful kiss of gratitude and thanks.
**
Anne smiles kindly when the two of them arrive home. A very fussy, red-faced swaddled baby coddled in her arms.
“She hasn’t settled for quite a while now - she missed her parents very much,” Harry’s mum tells them, transferring her into her father’s arms. He’s automatically rocking and running his thumb over her cheek.
“Ooh, we missed you. Was Nana nice to you?” Harry coos. Sasha has already quieted and is blinking tearfully up at her smiling father.
“Such a good girl, best girl,” Y/N sighs, leaning in to kiss her downy hair. Harry’s hand coming to wrap around his wife’s waist as they peer down at their perfect little daughter.
Anne smiles at his son and daughter-in-law fawning over their little creation with so much love and adoration.
After a minute of chatting -Harry’s mum makes her way up to the guest room after a long night with a miserable baby. They make their way to their room where Y/N strips out of her tight dress and awful bra.
She sits against the headboard in just a pair of soft cotton panties. Harry is gently shushing her and humming a melody as his wife gets situated. He knew she was anxious to feed the baby.
“That’s it my sweet thing. Y’missed us, hm? We missed you too, bub. Nana said y’wouldn’t take the bottle. Only want your mumma, hmm?” Harry coos, kissing her chubby cheeks.
He’s then giving Y/N the baby, who ferociously latching within seconds and begins eating like she’d been starved for the last week. Making weak little rumbles as she does so.
They both giggle fondly, Y/Ns fingers come to touch her fluttering cheek - memorizing her over and over again.
Harry gets onto the bed and settles next to the both of them. Watching his baby feed in amazement at what his wife was capable of. He smears a few kisses against her bare shoulder - hand on his baby’s back.
How strong she was - as he knew it had to be at least a little bit painful with how irritated her nipples had been. He can tell when she winces every once in a while.
He plants a few more kisses to her warm skin - noticing her eyes getting a bit droopy as Sasha feeds at a slow, suckling pace.
“If I’m being honest, being with you - watching you feed our baby...I’d rather be here than at any club.”
Y/N snorts, rolling her eyes, “Sure.”
Her husband frowns, “M’serious, this is all I need, baby.”
“I love you, congratulation on all your Brits,” Y/N murmurs, pecking at his lips.
“I love you too. I meant it, during my speeches. I wouldn’t have been able to write those songs if you hadn’t inspired me. You’ll and the bab will always be the best muse.”

“Could I come see you teach?”
Spencer looked up from his desk, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “It might be kind of boring. It’s a 100 level Intro to Profiling course.”
She peered over the side of the couch, closing her book. “Well, I don’t know anything about profiling, so an intro course would be right up my alley, don’t you think? And if you’re teaching it, I can guarantee it won’t be boring.”
He scrunched his nose in the way he sometimes did and clicked the cap on his pen once, twice, three times. “If you, um— if you really want to.”
She considered him for a moment before pushing herself up off the couch, coming around it to cross to his desk, perching herself on the corner. “You’ve seen me teach a bunch of times,” she said, knocking their knees together. “It’s only fair.”
He set his pen down and leaned back in his office chair, avoiding her eyes. She pulled her leg back, regretting her decision to ask. “It was just an idea. I don’t have to if you don’t want.”
As she moved to stand, he stopped her with a hand on her knee. “It’s not that. I don’t not want you to,” he clarified. He turned his chair to face her fully, peering up at her with a flush on his cheeks. “I just— I don’t know. You’re such a natural. I’m… awkward. Sometimes they just— stare at me.”
Y/N scoffed. “I’m sure you’re not awkward.” She twirled one of the curls falling into his face around her finger, releasing it into a soft ringlet. “But seriously, if you don’t want me to come, it’s fine.”
He rolled his chair closer and ran his hands up the tops of her thighs. “I do want you to. Really.”
He sat up straighter, craning his neck up towards her, and she couldn’t stop herself from smiling. She leaned down to meet his lips, and his hands wandered up to grasp at her hips. She laughed as he pulled her off the desk and practically into his lap, sliding his tongue into her mouth. She let him take it a little further, his hands traveling under her shirt and up over her back.
When she pulled back to catch her breath, his dazed expression had her heart pounding. Any insecurity that managed to weasel its way into her psyche evaporated every time he looked at her. She ran a soft finger over the bridge of his nose. “Can you take a break?”
“Mhm,” he hummed, standing up and dragging her toward the bedroom with only a little too much enthusiasm.
…
“Okay, can I help you with anything?” Y/N asked, setting her bag down on the lecture podium.
“Actually, yeah. Could you, um— write these topic notes,” he pulled out his notebook and flipped it open, “on that half of the board?”
“You got it, professor.” She accepted the notebook, turning to the board and uncapping the dry erase marker.
They worked quietly together, scrawling his notes across the white board, shoulders brushing comfortably together every so often. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him finish his side, capping the marker and stepping back to watch her.
“This is much faster with two people. I should hire you.”
“You couldn’t afford my hourly rate,” she teased, leaning down a bit to copy the last bullet point.
“Is there a boyfriend discount?” he asked, a soft fingertip tracing down her spine.
She laughed as she capped the marker and set it in the tray, turning to face him and tilting her head in consideration. “Maybe we could work something out.”
He brought his hands to her hips, dug his fingers in, and pulled her closer. “Yeah?” He brushed his lips over hers and stepped forward, nearly pressing her back against the board.
“Mmhmm,” she agreed, pressing a slow kiss to his mouth. She used her hands on his tummy to push him back a little. “But I charge double if you smudge it.”
“Fair.” He smiled and kissed her again, this time bringing his hands up to cradle her face.
“As much as I’d love to kiss you forever,” she mumbled against his lips, “your students are going to be here any minute.”
He groaned and leaned his forehead against hers, and she laughed at his petulance. “I’m gonna go to the bathroom, and then I’ll sit up in the back. You won’t even know I’m here.”
He pulled back with a sigh. “You being here is all I’m going to think about.”
She kissed his nose and stepped around him to grab her bag. “I’ll try my best not to distract you.” She made her way off the lecture platform and up the aisle, turning back to ask, “Oh, office hours are right after class?”
“Yeah,” he confirmed, leaning against the lecture podium. “1:00 to 2:00. The quad is beautiful this time of year, and there’s a coffee shop if you wanted to hang out there.”
…
After her bathroom break, she re-entered the lecture hall as quietly as possible, slipping into the last row of seats and setting her bag down on the desk in front of her. The room was more than two thirds full, with students crammed into the first few rows and then sparsely sprinkled throughout the back half of the room. But she only had eyes for him.
She’d seen him, kissed him less than ten minutes ago, and yet here she was— blushing like a schoolgirl and resisting the urge to pull at her collar.
Even from the back row, she could see the way his suit coat stretched across his broad shoulders, the way the button at the bottom of his cardigan didn’t quite reach, the way his pants pulled taut across his thighs. She’d seen him pick the outfit out of his closet this morning, watched him put it on, even helped him with the knot of the tie. She shouldn’t realistically be this rattled by the sight of him.
But something about the way he set his shoulders back a little, the way his arm moved underneath the fabric as he scrawled an additional note across the board, the way he turned and put his hands in his pockets and waited quietly for the class to settle— felt different.
“We’ve got a lot to cover today. Let’s get started.”
She didn’t pull her collar, but she did remove her jacket— she was suddenly so, so hot, practically sweating— and draped it across the back of the chair. He caught her eye, gave her a small smile, and then launched into a lecture about the foundations of building victimology.
Just as she suspected, he was an absolute natural. Unbelievably knowledgeable of course, but also incredibly enthusiastic and positively captivating. She couldn’t take her eyes off him.
And neither, it seemed, could the class. She scolded herself for the train of thought— of course they’re looking at him, he’s their professor. But he was right when he’d said that they... stare at him. The class was mostly young women, although the ogling seemed to cross gender lines.
She couldn’t blame them. He answered questions with ease and gave witty responses to the devil’s advocate types. His enthusiasm was endearing and charming as hell. And, of course, he looked damn good doing it.
With just over ten minutes left of class, she gathered her jacket and bag, standing quietly and moving into the aisle. She caught his eye as she headed for the door, slightly reassured when she saw a flash of concern in his eyes. She smiled and made a sipping gesture, and he nodded minutely and continued with his lecture.
Fifteen minutes later, she was on her way back down the hallway toward his office, a coffee in each hand. When she turned the corner at 12:57, she was stunned to see that a line was already forming.
“You gotta be kidding me,” she muttered, approaching the crowd of undergraduates.
One particularly perky coed stood directly in front of his door, and Y/N cleared her throat. When the girl turned, she held up the coffees and gestured to the door. “I’m so sorry. I— I’m just gonna drop this off. I’ll just be one minute.”
The girl took a small step back, barely allowing Y/N to squeeze through the door left slightly ajar. It creaked slightly as she stepped through it, and Spencer’s head lifted from where he was hunched over his desk.
“Hey!” He stood and shuffled around the side of the desk.
“Hi.” She forced a smile. “Sorry, I won’t keep you, I just— thought you might like a pick-me-up,” she said, holding out the cup to him.
He sighed with relief. “You’re a mind reader.” He accepted the coffee cup with a grateful smile. She moved to leave, and he lightly snagged her wrist. “Hey.” He slowly pulled her back toward the desk, his eyes darting down to her mouth.
She hummed, and he leaned forward to kiss her, moved his hand up to cup her cheek in his warm palm. He sighed into her mouth and gently tugged at her bottom lip with his teeth before pressing a quick peck to it. “Thank you.” He pressed a final kiss to her mouth with chapstick-soft lips. “I’ll see you in an hour?”
“Mhm,” she smiled again, a little more genuinely. “See you then, professor.”
She slipped back through the door, avoiding the curious eyes of the crowd. The hallway felt tight and constricting, and she was grateful for the way the fresh air hit her as she pushed through the door back out into the quad.
She found an empty seat on a bench and set her coffee and bag down, shuffling through the latter to find her book. She flipped open to her bookmark, sure that she could finish at least two chapters during his office hour. As she attempted to read, however, her mind could not stop turning over the image of Spencer being admired by fifty young, attractive coeds.
She read the same sentence five times before closing her book with a huff. She closed her eyes and tried to slow her breathing, focusing on a deep inhalation and a long exhale. She carefully packed her book back into her bag, opting instead to sip her coffee and watch the bustle of the quad.
It wasn’t that she was jealous, exactly. Jealousy wasn’t the right word. She trusted Spencer wholeheartedly. He was honest and kind, and he made it abundantly clear how much he was attracted to her.
She sighed shakily and closed her eyes against the unexpected tears that she could feel brimming just below the surface. It wasn’t jealousy. It was simply the insecurity that had always been there. Well, not always, she supposed, but long enough. Ten years. Owen had been out of her life for nearly half that time, but the mental scars he’d left her with would probably never fully heal.
She was twenty one years old when they first started dating, and twenty six by the time he ended it. Five years of her life spent with a man who had conditioned her to believe that she had nothing to offer. Her work was insignificant. Her family was low-class. Her friends were irritating. Her laugh was obnoxious. She was immature and loud and annoying and daft. She should be grateful that he was interested in her despite these flaws.
As if he hadn’t made all of that clear enough, he’d ended their relationship by cheating on her— not once, not twice, but consistently for nearly a year. And it seemed that almost everyone had known about it… except for her. That had been the most humiliating part; he’d had this woman in their bed, and she’d been completely unaware. She had cooked for him, attended his work events, slept beside him, subjected herself to his wrath, and never even considered that he could be with someone else.
It took years for her to recover and rebuild. Years before she was ready to date again. It required her to construct a foundation of independence and self-love that she’d never had. And nearly five years later, she finally felt beautiful and strong and worthy.
So why was her mind suddenly replaying every horrid thing Owen had ever said to her? Spencer was nothing like Owen. Spencer was kind, loving, and supportive. He was brilliant, talented, and accomplished.
She pressed her lips together and swiped a hand under her eye, catching the lone tear that had managed to escape. That was exactly the problem. Spencer was all those wonderful things, and suddenly she couldn’t understand why he wanted her.
She pulled out her phone to check the time, huffing out a breath as she realized she’d spent nearly an hour dredging up old wounds. She closed her eyes and repeated her daily affirmation. I am powerful, and I am capable. I respect and honor my mind and my body. I am worthy, and I am enough. I love myself fully, just as I am.
Now she just needed to believe it.
She gathered her things, finishing up the last sips of her coffee before scoping out a garbage can. She tossed her empty cup in the bin on her way back to the building. As she opened the door, the blast of air conditioning cooled her sweaty skin. She stopped by the bathroom to splash her face with cool water, taking barely a moment to look at herself under the harsh fluorescent lights.
She made her way down the hallway, turning the corner to see that there were still three students in line outside Spencer’s office. She checked the time to see that it was technically five minutes past office hours. She dropped quietly into one of the two chairs across the hallway from his door.
The other chair was occupied by a student, quite clearly waiting for Spencer, judging by the heavy sigh that accompanied his glance up at the office door. Y/N almost laughed at the way he aggressively checked his watch, tapping his foot rapidly on the floor.
“Is it— um. Is it always like this?” She gestured to Spencer’s door.
The tapping stopped, and the kid turned to her with another sigh. “Every. Goddamn. Time.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I mean, I get it. I do. But, man. I’m just trying to ask about the structure of the final. This is the third week in a row that I’ve been here and I still haven’t seen him.” He checked his watch again and then ran a hand over his face. “And now I gotta get to my next class. I’m gonna have to leave early next week to camp out,” he joked.
He stood and gathered his things, and Y/N did laugh a little then. “Good luck.”
He waved and headed off down the hallway, and Y/N turned back to see a girl leaving out through Spencer’s half-open door, looking positively dreamy. She barely resisted the urge to roll her eyes as the next girl stepped through the door.
She waited another twenty minutes for the final two students to finish their visits. When the last student made her way out the door and down the hall, Y/N stood and smoothed down the skirt of her dress. She crossed the hallway and peered into his office, knocking on the door frame.
Spencer raised his head with a panicked look, his face softening into relief when he saw it was her. “Hey. Close the door,” he begged.
Y/N stepped into his office and closed the door quietly behind her. She finally took a look around the space— fairly small but tastefully decorated. The wall across from her was one enormous bookcase, filled to capacity, of course. Light filtered in from a single window, and his mahogany desk sat on the far wall, accompanied by a wing back leather office chair. Behind his desk was a low shelf lined with a globe, some other trinkets, and a plethora of picture frames.
“Sorry that took so long.” He ran a hand over his face. “I don’t know why my office hours are always so busy.”
She hummed, crossing to the gigantic bookshelf. “No?”
“No,” he confirmed exasperatedly. “No one else has that many students at their office hours. I asked.”
She laughed a little. “You asked?”
“Well, yeah.” He drew his brows together. “I don’t know if my syllabus is confusing, or if I’m— not clear enough in my lectures, maybe?” He dragged both hands through his hair and leaned back in his chair. “But there are always so many questions, and I mean— there are no stupid questions, but…” He sighed. “Sometimes the questions are stupid.”
She did laugh at that, full and loud. “Well, if my professors looked like Dr. Spencer Reid, I imagine I’d come up with a litany of questions, too. Stupid or otherwise.”
He was quiet, and she ran her finger along the book she was studying rather intently. She felt him moving toward her more than heard it, felt his eyes on her. She couldn’t bring herself to look at him, instead pretending to peruse the titles in front of her, books full of theories that she’d never be able to understand.
“Are you— are you jealous?” he asked incredulously.
“No,” she defended, a little too quickly and voice a little too high.
“It’s okay if you are. Jealousy is— it’s a very normal human emotion.” He cleared his throat. “It’s, um— it’s kind of hot, actually.”
She rolled her eyes, but his confession made her feel a little bit better. He put a hand on her waist to turn her to face him, and she could feel her cheeks burning— hoped he couldn’t see it. She couldn’t quite meet his eyes, instead staring at a spot on the wall behind his head.
“But you know you have no reason to be, right?” He cupped a gentle hand under her chin, finally brought her eyes to his. “Why would I be interested in girls when I already have a woman?”
When she didn’t say anything, he continued, “A woman who brings me coffee, and buys gifts for my fish, and helps me make PowerPoints, and goes to fancy dinners at Le Chateau LaMontagne.”
Her lips twitched into the start of a smile, and he brought his hands down to lace their fingers together. “Who forgives me when I mess up, and lets me cry on her shoulder at 3:00am, and helps me be a better person.”
She sniffed but tried to lighten the mood. “She sounds pretty great.”
“She is great. She’s remarkable.” He tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “I love you.”
And there was that look again. Spencer looked at her like she’d hung the moon and the stars and every single celestial body in the galaxy. Like the answer to every question was contained within her atoms. It was almost enough to have her believing it, too. Maybe someday she would.
She squeezed his hand. “I love you, too.” For now, that was enough.

Hello! Can I have some hc with a protective mama Reader with Naib, Helena and Bane. They are my precious baby. I haven't play this game since season 13 and I miss them so much ahhhhhhh 😭😭. Thank you, have a nice day ❤❤🌷 (sr, my English is not good)
✨ Your English is wonderful dear ✨
[Naib Subedar, Helena Adams, Gamekeeper] S/O Is Overprotective
Tumblr media
✨ As a reminder, my works will always include gn!reader unless specified by the requester! ✨
———————————————————————
[Naib Subedar]:
* You had been at the manor for quite awhile now, and were a rather nice person, getting along with most other survivors, and even some of the hunters to boot.
* It was quite surprising actually. You’d walked in the first day with a tough-guy attitude and gruff personality, and you didn’t seem like a very approachable person.
* Then, some survivors such as Victor and Emily started worming their way into your heart. Liam [Lucky Guy] and Norton were some of the first people to offer you a seat at the dinner table, and from then on you were one of them.
* You had scars, though most could tell they were more physical than emotional, from some sidejobs you used to complete for a gang on White Sand Street—robbing people and competing in fights with rivals.
* You quickly learned that most people fought back. Rival gangs always intruded on your own territory, and you were always left on guard, defending the last remnants of your livelihood and your sanity.
* Maybe that’s why you’re so protective over your things. Never letting anyone enter your room, never letting anyone see the pain you hide. Opening up to people enough to make allies, but never enough to show secrets.
* Now Naib…. Naib helped you out a lot. It seemed he understood you, far more than others. For some reason, he was always there for you, watching your back when needed, acting like a shield at times—sometimes literally.
* You never really understood at first, how he seemed to know you so well. From what you knew, he came from halfway cross the world, from Nepal, in India—a child, a soldier, a weapon.
* You guessed his life was rather similar, and assumed he’d come to the manor for quite the same reasons but, it was hard to see through the scowl on his face.
* At some point, you began to recognize the signs, the irritation, the avoidance. You recognized the silence, and the stiffness that came from Naib when he ate and smiled and nodded at their questions. You saw the signs of a brother, somebody just as lost and broken as you were.
* Children in the bodies of adults, forced to live life too fast and too furiously. Damaged and done in, waiting for someone to save them, but too scared to cry for help.
* Unwilling to hurt others again, unwilling to change.
* You grew wary—observant—of him eventually. You joined in more matches with him as teammate, and sat next to him often at dinner. When you noticed he didn’t eat as much, you grunted in concern. When he fell asleep in odd places, you’d bring him a blanket.
* It got to the point where he found out about your help, and tried to dissuade you from wasting your time.
* You never really listened. In fact, your worries only increased. Others might not have recognized, but you saw the signs of fatigue and death written in the lines of his face. You’d seen it every day back on White Sand.
* He gave up on making you give up, tired of attempted persuasions. Eventually began returning the favours—Naib is the type to have a ‘you watch my back, I’ll watch yours’ mentality.
* Everything you’d do for him is returned in kind. It annoyed the rest of the manor to no end because the giving and receiving eventually reached limits unheard of.
* You’d throw yourself on a rocket chair to save him, and next game you’d have your own personal bodyguard tracking your every move.
* He’d never admit it, but he appreciates all you do for him, and hopes you appreciate his efforts in making your life a little better too.
* Though your protective tendencies know no bounds, he hopes you’re a little more cautious with throwing your life on the line for him like that. This is a death game after all, be more careful…. please?
* At some point, the whole manor hopes you two could just get together and kiss it out in some storage closet. If you’re dating, what’s the need to be so consistent in you’re protective tendencies? Then you’ll always be together, which means nothing can ever happen to either of you!
* To be fair, that’s what most of them thought until an incident after the confession, where Naib wouldn’t let you out of the medical ward for a week due to a few hairline fractures.
* Please Naib! Emily begs you to let her use the examination table! You’ve hogged it for 5 days and she needs it to identify the infection spreading on Aesop’s leg! Vera broke her nose! William sprinted into the gymnasium wall and shattered his kneecaps! Please leave!
* You once set fire to a couch because Naib stubbed his toe on it.
* Please stop it you two, Freddy can’t budget for anymore furniture, and we’re fresh out of chairs.
———————————————————————
[Helena Adams]:
* Oops! Oh no her glasses! Aww shucks, Norton knocked them right off her face and onto the hardwood floor. She can’t find them because she can’t see, whatever shall she do?
* [S/o]! Please, she needs your help!
* You come in running with a pair of pliers, five bottles of anti-grease spray, and a box of extra lenses and a screwdriver.
* Oh how wonderful! You fixed her glasses—again—and saved her from the task of shuffling herself on all fours looking for them! Her hero!
* Helena…. praises you to say the least. You’re her best friend, her confidante, her…. big and strong, sometimes dumb partner!
* She adores everything you do for her, and tries equally as hard to do things for you that make your life necessarily easier, though it’s harder with her condition.
* She met you around the same time as everybody else, during your first days in the manor. Really, she didn’t actually know you were there until she bumped into a voice she didn’t recognize and became surprised.
* You quickly learned about her blindness, and made it your goal to form a friendship with her based on your willingness to help her around and get closer to her—she was very kind after all.
* Your protectiveness stemmed from the inherent feeling of a need to help guide and provide for Helena, much like a spouse would… jk, unless 👀….
* At some points, you were berated by her for your incessant protections, most of which made her feel highly dependent, which she didn’t like.
* She liked the feeling of being independent of others and being recognized as an autonomous, capable being. Especially considering what she came there for, it was a blow to her pride to be led around and pushed aside all the time.
* When she revealed these feelings to you, you had surprisingly promised her to cease in most areas of monitoring—however you still consistently check up on her—and settled into the realm of a relationship with her.
* Helena meets somebody who respects her opinions + acknowledges her intellect + isn’t a dingy asshole? Sign her up and slap on a ring, she’s marrying this person (eventually).
* She knows that your tendencies stem from a place of need and want, and tolerates most of them. Deep down, she likes being taken care of by someone who knows she can take care of herself. She really does love you.
* When you’re actually in a relationship with each other, you make sure to watch each others backs, more so you than Helena (because she can’t ‘watch’ per say), but you get the point.
* There was once an incident in a duo’s match where Helena became stranded on the Lakeside Fishing map. The terrain is rough, with piles of fish everywhere, randomly placed boxes and walls, and the barrels are bad enough when they don’t form a blockade.
* Her navigational skills, as good as they are with all her previous experience and staff, couldn’t for the life of her figure out how to move her way around a mess of box paths, pallets, and fishing stands.
* Most other survivors were occupied or dead—it had been a hard match against Jack the Ripper and Guard 26—and she was barred from reaching any form of help.
* So she screamed your name as loud as she possibly could across the map, and ended up attracting the attention of BonBon instead. During those moments where she could hear his clanks and heavy metalloid footsteps stalking towards her, the tick of a time bomb in hand, she heard a screech in the distance.
* A fierce battlecry—you came raging from around a windmill, propelled by William’s football and packing heat with a flare gun. BonBon, now stunned twice, stood there in astonishment, before chasing after you, who had grabbed Helena in your arms, running off at full speed.
* Your stamina bar, indicated by a small tab on your character, was running low, and you wouldn’t be able to run at full speed for another minute or two, having used your ability to buy time. Stopping near a closet, you lean down to place Helena on her feet, telling her to hide.
* Her blood trail was invisible from not actually having run anywhere, and she did as you said, making you promise to come get her when it was safe.
* You gave her a smirk and a small nod, assuring her that you would, before leaning in for a peck on the forehead as you shoved her into the locker.
* If only you could see her flushed in embarrassment.
* Leaving her to fangirl in the locker, you form a decoy in your arms—result of your max rescuer ability—and ran off once more, taking off around a corner just as Guard 26 reached your previous location, chasing after you and ‘Helena’ in hopes of landing two more kills.
———————————————————————
[Bane the Gamekeeper]:
* How does it feel to love a deerman? Good? Okay!
* Bane as you know is a little…. rough around the edges so-to-speak, and he has a lot of edges.
* Once you get around all the hooks, chains, and bear traps, and beneath that creepy-looking deer head of his, he really is such a sweet guy!
* At least you think so. In reality, he still acts like a complete dick to everybody else, and only shows his soft side around you, but that’s because he knows he can trust you with his lands, animals, and secrets! All those others out there only wish to hurt what he—you—have, and he’ll make them pay for it.
* Honestly, in order for him to have fallen for you so hard to have let his guard down around you, you probably would have had to be at your most vulnerable point in life, or a hunter yourself. Like a scared prey animal, uncertain of its future, waiting for something to happen, and somebody to help, or a huge predator, ready to strike out at any moment.
* Once you worm your way into his cold dead heart, there’s no way out for you. He’ll keep you close, as he doesn’t want you to be poached away like his precious animal friends from the past. He knows how cruel humanity can be sometimes.
* When you come to find out about his less-than-kind history, it’s all you can do to pity him. Your sympathy knows no bounds, and you become clingier, though he quite honestly likes it.
* You don’t want what happened to him to occur again, and with all these other traitors and murderers in the manor, you’re afraid of what the others could do.
* You keep to his side a lot more, take walks with him in the garden, and enjoy tranquil picnics from time-to-time on Lakeside. Anything to keep him close to you and away from all the pain.
* Bane can obviously see what your doing, and noticing that your protectiveness doesn’t yet border on the insane, he allows you to continue in your devotions.
* It’s honestly sweet sometimes how you both adore each other so much, even if you know that one day one or both of you will have to leave. Whether it be through death, disappearance, or another means such as escape is a question of time, and one that neither of you know the answer to.
* If you’re also a hunter, than both of you know that while you two are happier now than either of you were in life, that your individual deaths and worths will eventually determine your fates—whether that be a happy afterlife, or an eternity of endless wandering.
* It’s well known that you’ll both disappear the day the game ends, your souls being put to rest as they should’ve been however long ago. Until then however, you’ll continue to hold on to and vehemently protect the relationship the two of you have, and you’ll fight until your soul vanishes from the earth for what you have to remain that way.
* Now, if you’re a survivor, this is where the relationship can be a bit difficult.
* Avidly defending the actions of your boyfriend during and after a match to the rest of your survivor buddies isn’t a very good look for you, or your reputation. It’s been many times where you’ve almost been chased out of the dining room because somebody was pissed at you for costing them the match, or being the only one spared instead of convincing Bane for a win or tie.
* As they say, if you can’t beat em’, join em’. Some survivors, such as William, Kreacher, and Freddy, have more than once suggested that if you loved a hunter so much, you should become one to be with him. Dating the undead almost crosses the line of what is humane. Aesop thinks you’re kind of cool.
* The hunters over on Bane’s side hate you more. Are convinced that you’re the sole reason that Bane goes friendly sometimes (even in matches without you in them), and that your relationship takes away from his brutal and violent persona and nature.
* Violetta and Michiko are the most tolerant of you, mainly because you gifted them silk and a hand fan for Christmas once when they wished for them in their letters.
* All-in-all, basically everyone blames you, but you keep going forward because who cares about all the nasty bi*ches in the world, am I right?
* Once, to prove the integrity and devotion of your relationship, you set Freddy’s room on fire and locked Kreacher in a closet. You looked Bane directly in the eyes and kneeling before him stated, “I have committed arson for you m’lord.”
* You couldn’t see it because of his deerish head and all, but Bane really went “Heart eyes motherf*cker.” on you in that moment.
* You love animals and set things on fire to prove your loyalty to him? Ticket for one please, he’s riding the simp train all the way to the station.
* Just, please don’t accidentally burn down the manor, he wants to spend as much time with you as possible before he disappears.
* Also don’t joke around with your life, it’s too precious, even when you tackle your own teammate or risk getting hit by Ganji’s cricket ball to save him from being stunned.
* He doesn’t want you dying before he does—has already he supposes—or disappearing without a trace.
* You promise you’ll stick with him until the day you finally leave this wretched place.

The Miys, Ch. 151
This chapter has been one that I have been dying to write for a while. I was worried that @baelpenrose would resist the idea, but he very much thought it was hilarious. As always, his input and riffing on this chapter has very much made it better and better.
However, it also made the chapter longer, lol. But there is just no way to trim it down without losing something that makes it all work, so this week is nearly double my normal length... break everyone’s heart, right? ;)
“I don’t like these numbers,” Parvati grumbled - as much as she was capable of grumbling - as she scrolled through the final counts of approval ratings on her and Hannah’s inaugural Food Festival.
The statistics had been dropped into our inboxes that morning, in the static of about a thousand other notifications now that Derek had finished the stress-test. Also included were the results of the last three invasion-prep drills, which I was in the process of scanning over.
“How bad are they?” I asked, half listening for a number. The drills were trending better, which was a good sign that the moves were effective.
Dismissing her display with a gesture of disgust, she sighed. “Seventy-four percent approval rating.”
I arched a brow and glanced over. “Did you adjust for those who did not attend?”
The glare she sent me wasn’t seen so much as felt. “Of course I did. First thing I ran…”
“Are you filtering by the day the comments came in?”
“I -” Bingo. She huffed. “No! These are intended to be ratings for the entirety of the event!”
I started scrolling through my own statistics. “Chart them out by the date the ratings came in, filtering out everyone who didn’t actually attend.”
A pause. “Oh… Oh! It’s showing ninety-three-point-four now!”
“Et voila,” I murmured. Louder, I clarified, “People like to weigh in early, and those who object in general tend to speak first.”
“I see that… how’s it going over there?” she asked, smoothing her braid over her shoulder as she turned to look at me directly.
“We are improving with every drill, marked upticks since the relocations. Arthur should be here in about - “ I glanced at a clock, “Seven minutes to go over next steps.”
Alistair breezed over to swap my empty bulb of cold coffee for a fresh one of water. “The appointment is in fifteen minutes.”
Parvati beat me to the punch.  “He is also compulsively early, meaning…. Six minutes now.”
He rolled his eyes hard enough that I wanted to giggle. “He doesn’t even have the decency to be fashionably late. Appalling.”
Surely enough, Arthur paged at the entrance - out of some sort of manners I accidentally instilled in him - exactly five minutes prior to our scheduled appointment. As he breezed into my office, he managed a half-assed glare at Alistair for abruptly turning away and focusing on my schedule rather than his usual tendency to get a beverage for any newcomers. “Okay, updated data on drills isn’t what I want it to be.”
I laughed. “You’re joking, right? Your team and Michael’s haven’t gotten past deck four by more than three percent in the last seven exercises.”
“Any percent above zero is unacceptable,” he grumbled. I chalked it up to the indignity of being forced to get his own tea from the console.
Almost as though to spite Arthur, Alistair made a point to set a refreshed water bulb in front of everyone except the professor. “There are guards on the other levels for a reason,” he suggested drily.
“And I would rather those guards be idle, thank you,” Arthur threw back in a near-venomous tone.
“Us guards would rather be prepared for any eventuality, which you may do well to plan for in your petty drills.”
I didn’t even try to intervene. Clearly there was some blatantly disagreement between my  admin and my friend, and I was exhausted from trying to make them cooperate.
“If I’m doing my job, you should be so grateful as to be idle,” Arthur drawled.
Alistair scoffed. “As if being left to rest and get fatter than a Christmas goose is a blessing…”
“You’ll live longer!”
“And get lax in my duties, which I will not stand for!”
“Get fat! Get lazy! LIVE! I don’t care! I’m not going to be lax in my duties to allow you the opportunity of getting practice at fighting.” Standing, Arthur buried both hands in his hair, but it looked less like he was running his fingers through it than pulling on it. “Are we really discussing this when we are training to fight in living body condoms?”
“I need to defend the Archives!”
“And Michael and I need to defend everyone! Us doing our job means you don’t need to do yours.”
My neck snapped back at the vehemence in his tone. This wasn’t their normal sparring… they may have never truly gotten along, but even in the beginning it was never so vicious.
To my further alarm, Alistair took a long stride forward and stared down his nose at Arthur. “We both know that she - “ his hand flung out to point at me “is either the luckiest or unluckiest person in existence. You can’t really believe that, in an actual assault on this ship, that she won’t be in danger. Which will place Tyche, the Archives, Derek Okafor, and Samuel Richardson in equal danger. You aren’t an idiot, you know this.” The hand pointing toward me turned, and time seemed to slow down as he stabbed Arthur in the sternum with it, punctuating each of his next words. “Stop lying to yourself.”
“Poke me again, and the finger comes off.”
“I would dearly love to see you try.”
Hannah and Parvati had jumped to their feet when Alistair approached Arthur, but were now slowly moving around to my position, safely behind my desk. Hannah hissed at me through clenched teeth, “You had to tell them to fight it out.”
“I thought they would use a gym, not the damned office,” I hissed back.
Before she could respond, Alistair spoke again. “You aren’t the only one on the Ark who wants to protect everyone. You need to trust us to do our bloody jobs.”
“The last time I trusted anyone else to protect people, I lost fourteen students,” came the ground out response. “I’m not backing down on this.”
“You will, or I will sedate you and strap you to a medical berth for the next four months.” Alistair stepped back and crossed his arms with finality.
A trickle of nerves ran down my spine as I watched Arthur clench his fists and release them. “You think the solution to everything is to tie it up, I swear.”
“Stop changing the topic. I am deadly serious, Farro.”
Arthur turned away from him, waving him off. “Try something else, you would never just sedate me for months on end.” Before we could stop anything, Alistair leapt forward and put Arthur in a headlock, only to be immediately flipped over the other man’s shoulder and onto the table. “Tch. Sloppy. I know you can do better.”
“I thought you wanted me to get fat and lazy,” Alistair grunted as he sucker-punched Arthur in the stomach and rolled for the other side.  Once on his feet, he eyed Arthur carefully as he circled the table. “You stubborn ass, you know I am right.  You are putting everyone in the lower levels at risk by not running preparedness drills with them, because you don’t want to factor in the fact that one of the offensive teams could fail.”
“We don’t have the luxury of failing, so no. If we do our jobs correctly, everyone who matters will be safe at the other end of the Ark.”
They didn’t seem to be at each other’s throats anymore, but the arguing wasn’t getting anywhere. “Guys - “ I tried.
Both men turned and practically screamed at me with their glares to stop talking.  Oookay. I held up my hands in surrender and decided to let them sort it out their way.
Damned if the console wasn’t on the other side of them, though. I couldn’t even get popcorn and a drink.
Alistair blew a harsh breath through his nose. “If you won’t include the lower decks in your drills, I will start sparring with Jokul.”
“He would kill you,” Arthur barked in the most miserable laugh I’ve ever heard.
“God forbid,” Alistair mocked. “If I were gone, who would make your tea in the morning.”
“The same person who picks up the socks that magically appear all over my quarters every day, obviously. Worthington, I’m serious, he could really hurt you. He has really hurt me. And Charly.”
That last part was dismissed with a wave. “Madam Charles the First put the fear of herself into him.”
“And you haven’t. He could kill you by accident, and he’d never forgive himself.”
“Maybe that wouldn’t be the case if you would let me train more!”
Arthur groaned and ran a hand down his face. “You are an adult, we’ve talked about this. Train all you want, with whoever you want - Charly, Sophia, Tyche… hell, train with Evan or Michael, I don’t care. Just, not Jokul.”
When did they talk about this? I wondered. It had to be during a sparring session or something, because it definitely wasn’t in my office during one of our meetings. A glance at Hannah showed she was watching everything unfold like it was the most riveting show she had ever seen, and Parvati’s squint of consideration wasn’t much better.
“As you said, I’m an adult. Perhaps I should take your advice, and train with Charly - “
“See - “
“- and Jokul. She will make sure I don’t get hurt.”
Arthur flung his hands up in frustration. “You are so stubborn, I swear!” Growling, he paced in a circle. “Fine! Train with Charly and Jokul. IN the bivouac suit, though! And I don’t want to hear a word when you end up confined in a med bay yourself.”
Alistair’s smug grin showed just how much he seemed to care. “At least I would be spared of picking up the trail of dishes that seem to follow you around.”
“For the love of - they are my quarters! Mine! And I don’t want to hear about it when your bloody socks are constantly getting lost behind my sofa!”
Oh. Oh no. Nonononononono.
“My socks can go wherever they fucking want to, when I am constantly cleaning your disgusting whiskers out of the sink!”
“You know what would fix you having to clean whiskers out of the sink? I could just stop shaving altogether. How about...that…” Arthur trailed off and very slowly turned toward the three of us behind my desk with a look of dawning horror.
And I tried. I really, really tried not to laugh.  I could feel my face reddening, my chest aching with the effort of holding it in.
Hannah’s snort was my undoing. As soon as that tiny noise escaped her, all three of us erupted into hysterical, stomach-cramping, tearful laughter.  I felt stabbing in my arm as Parvati dug her nails in, trying desperately not to fall.  Unfortunately for her, Hannah grabbed me at the same time and all three of us toppled to the floor. The sight of Arthur rolling his eyes and crossing his arms only made me escalate from laughing to shrieking in hysterics and relief.
I couldn’t speak for the other two ladies, but I thought the two men were going to end up killing each other… At no point did I think they took the other option when I told them to either fight it out or….
I gasped for breath, trying to get myself under control. Wobbling to my feet with the help of my trusty desk and a couple yanks to free my shirt from Parvati’s desperate clutching, I pointed between them. “This… how long? Can’t believe… didn’t figure it out.”
“Not everyone is as… public… as you, Conor, and Maverick are,” Arthur snarked at me. “You know, private lives should be private and all that?”
“Must be for you,” I confided in Alistair’s direction, where he had turned his back to our fit.  “He’s never not told me when he was dating someone. Or thinking of dating someone. Or potentially interested in seeing if he was interested in dating someone… Best friend privileges and all that.”  While I waited for Alistair to respond, my mind whirled through all the things I had brushed off before but were very obvious in retrospect.
Glancing at Arthur for a hint yielded nothing but a flat stare that all but declared in flashing lights You Aren’t Stupid.
I tilted my head at that, and kept thinking. There had been genuine animosity on Alistair’s side in the beginning, and not a small amount of needling on Arthur’s.  So I knew it wasn’t something that had always been going on. My mind came to a screeching halt, however, when I remembered something - the day Alistair, Tyche, and I decided that, when I vacated my position on the Council, they would vacate roles as well to leave behind a ‘clean slate’. “Four years, holy shit,” I gasped. “Four years!?”
Finally, Alistair moved. His back was still to us, but his arms went limp by his sides, and his head dropped down toward the floor. “It would be unseemly to have the new Councilor of Education in a relationship with the attache to the Councilor for Resources and Engagement. Or formerly in a relationship, should things not end well.”
“And since he won’t be taking his position until we are on Von,” I put together, “You are okay to serve out the rest of my term, just not Hannah’s or Parvati’s.”
“Correct.”
“Huh. That makes sense,” I admitted before hopping up to sit on my desk, the chair being a lost cause on the other side of two women who were still sniffling and giggling on the floor. “I learned a lot today.”
“Uh huh,” Arthur confirmed drily. “And it had better stay in this office.”
“What?” I managed a pretty convincing confused face before pretending to realize what he meant. “Oh! The relationship thing. Yeah, cool, whatever. That’s not what I was talking about, but you’re good.”
“Dare I even ask what you meant?” Alistair ventured, finally turning around so that he could give me a warning look.
“Uh, isn’t it obvious?” I asked, shaking my head and spreading my hands, palms up. When they both just stared at me, I finally broke and grinned. “Dude. You two are freaking slobs.”
The squeaking noises coming from the vicinity of my feet told me that no further work would be getting done for the rest of the day.

wishful thinking — harry potter
pairing: harry potter x female!reader
request: Hey you know the dancing scene between Harry and Hermione in the deathly hallows part 1? I was wondering if I could request a one shot with Harry but he's dancing with the reader instead, and when they stop dancing Harry confess his love for her and kiss her?? ❤️❤️❤️ It would be awesome if you could do it!
a/n: probably not gonna be able to post as much as i used to since i’m starting an online summer program thing tomorrow :(
Tumblr media
It gets overwhelming, sometimes, the whole Boy-Who-Lived business. The only one to ever survive the Killing Curse, the boy who defeated the Dark Lord before he could even walk and talk, savior of the wizarding world—Harry Potter.
Whenever people say his name, they either speak of him as if he's a saint or an annoying teenage boy desperate for attention. It's either he's the slayer of Lord Voldemort or that kid who thinks too highly of himself just because he got lucky enough to not die. He's many different things to many different people depending on which side of the story they heard and who they heard it from.
But Harry is.. well, he's Harry. Just Harry.
And Harry is a boy like any other. Harry doesn't spring up out of bed and start plotting Voldemort's downfall; he's a seventeen-year-old boy who finds joy in things like spending summer days playing Quidditch and joking around with his small circle of friends out by the Hogwarts courtyard just like anyone else. He loves and hurts and hopes and laughs—just like anyone else.
And Harry feels pain, too. Just like anyone else.
But what sets Harry apart from an ordinary teenager is that his eyes have seen far too much death than anyone his age is supposed to. Harry has witnessed it countless of times knowing that some, if not most of them were his fault. He has loved people only to lose them in the end; he has carried the burden of grief on his shoulders for as long as he can remember. And after all of those losses, it's only inevitable that he starts noticing:
Everyone close to him dies. One way or the other.
So when he starts noticing his heart growing too close to her—when he finds his gaze lingering on her far longer than necessary, when images of her smiling face sneak into his head in the dead of night—Harry decides to put a stop to it. He has to, while it's still early.
But feelings like these don't just go away. No matter how hard Harry tries to convince himself that [Y/N] is a friend just like Ron and Hermione and every other, his feelings linger like an echoing noise inside his head that surfaces whenever he lets his guard down; loud and incessant and unwilling to go away.
And so two years pass with him having a tug of war in his head between letting himself succumb to his feelings or pushing them away to protect her. Because really, no matter how much he feels for her, he is scared that one day he will wake up and hear that she has been captured and killed like so many before her, just because she is close to Harry.
He wishes he could be selfish. He wishes he could think to himself that, okay, you've been through a lot and you deserve this—you deserve to love and to be loved, but he can't risk putting her life on the line like that. He has risked far too much and lost too many—he can't add her onto that list.
Except it doesn't get any easier to restrain himself.
Every waking moment he spends with her he is left in disbelief because Harry has never thought that he could feel this happy and this miserable at the same time. Happy because he feels like he's at home and at peace, but miserable because he knows he can never have her.
Harry wonders if he will ever let himself feel love the way it's supposed to be felt someday.
He wonders it now, sitting in silence with her in the tent they've been sharing on the run for quite some time. It's at times like these that everything that has happened to them for the past few months starts to pile up on his shoulders; terror and pain and loss that has been set aside too often but now demands to be felt.
They've run from Snatchers and escaped the clutches of death more times than Harry can count. Each time, he inches ever so closer to losing her, as he has feared for so long. And he feels it now, stronger than ever before—the fear.
He stares at her from a few feet away. [Y/N]'s gaze is fixed on the floor, eyes gazing absently. She looks tired. Her cheeks have gone hollow and there are tiny scars on her face and on her arms that hadn't been there months ago, some fresh and some just beginning to heal. Harry wants to reach out and press his lips to each one of them in turn like this will somehow heal them, one by one.
But instead he sits there, staring, hoping against hope that she can't see the love threatening to burst right out of his chest.
It's the kind of love you hold between your lungs and your ribcage and hope that no one can see it glowing through your skin. The kind that you keep to yourself. The dangerous kind.
But the night is quiet and so are the pair of them. There is a song playing on the radio. [Y/N] and Harry are the only living, breathing souls for miles and miles aside from a rabbit or two, and there are no Snatchers around nor anyone hoping to kill them.
For the first time in a long time, Harry feels like he is allowed to breathe.
So he pushes away all of the burdens resting on his shoulders. He will acknowledge them at a different time. For now, he isn't the boy destined to bring about the Dark Lord's downfall, and for now, he isn't trying to protect anyone. [Y/N] included.
For now, he is just Harry, and there is nothing else in the world but him and [Y/N] and faint music crackling through the radio.
Harry gets to his feet and walks over to her. It takes [Y/N] a brief moment to realize that he is standing in front of her. Once she has snapped herself out of her reverie, she looks up at Harry, who has his hand held out.
"Care for a dance?" Harry asks her, and his voice is quiet but there is a ghost of a weak smile on his lips.
She blinks once. Twice. And then she lets out a long breath, nods, and lets Harry take her hand and pull her to her feet to the middle of the tent.
They are slow, at first. Hesitant. Neither of them quite know what they're doing—Harry definitely doesn't. The practice he received from McGonagall for the Yule Ball all those years ago is of little use, so he finds himself stumbling a little on his feet and repetitively stepping on [Y/N]'s toes by accident. But somewhere along the fifth time he does this, [Y/N] starts laughing—and once she starts, she can't seem to stop. So Harry starts laughing, too. And then he raises her arms and twirls her, over and over, laughing all the while as they dance erratically to the music until she spins back into his arms and stays there, hands on his shoulders, his on her waist as the song fades to a close and the moment of uncontrolled joy vanishes.
[Y/N] rests her head against his, silent.
Harry closes his eyes, waiting for her to pull away but not really wanting her to. As if she has heard him, she stays where she stands. And then, quietly, as though this brief moment of peace will slip away if he speaks too loud, Harry whispers, "What if we just stay here?"
She doesn't respond. Harry knows why—because it's impossible. There are too many people counting on them; too many lives to be saved and too little time. But Harry hopes, anyway, because it brings him even the slightest bit of comfort to envision a world where there is only him and her.
"We can grow old here together," Harry says, voice soft, and his chest aches. There's a lump in his throat and a painful prickling feeling behind his eyes as he keeps going, "We can stay and hide here until the war blows over." He doesn't mean it. But Harry can't quite have what other young boys do—normalcy and love and a life safe at home—so he is at least allowed to imagine. "We can stay and stop trying to find Horcruxes—stop trying to kill You-Know-Who."
"And leave everyone to die," [Y/N] finishes quietly. He both hears and feels her take a deep, shuddery breath; his grip on her waist tightens.
Harry wishes the world was different—or at least his. He never wanted to be famous. He never wanted his parents, nor anyone, to die for him. He wishes he could have grown up with a family he felt safe with, wishes he could have had more than a few months in his mother's arms and that he could take back all of the lives that had been sacrificed for him. And most of all, right in this moment, he wishes with all of his heart that he could love as freely as he wanted without having to worry about the consequences.
But those are just wishes, and nothing in the world can grant them. Not even magic.
Maybe that's why, when he pulls away and leans his forehead against hers, a single tear slips out of Harry's eyes. It's not like he doesn't know; he has known for a long time that some things in life he just can't have. But he's frustrated and desperate and the love in his chest that he has been trying to reign down for so long finally spills out and has him admitting, voice a hushed whisper, "I love you."
And then his lips are on hers, hesitant and slow and gentle, and it feels like finally as much as it feels like I can't do this.
He half-expects her to pull away. But she only moves his lips over his, just as slow. Harry tastes salty tears on his tongue—wonders whose tears they are, his or hers—and then she breaks away a little and replies in a mere whisper into his lips: "I know."
And for now, Harry thinks to himself, that is enough.

Zara was unable to fall back asleep. She could feel when Obi Wan finally succumbed to his own exhaustion and it set her on edge. She looked around quietly, keeping tabs on his signature across the building. There had been hope she could find her saber, but he must have stashed it away somewhere.
When she looked down to see her boots by the door, she decided she had no other choice. She couldn’t stay with her captor. There was a lack of clarity she wanted to rip out of her head even if it meant doing something risky. She told herself that Anakin wouldn’t sit around and wait at the mercy of anyone. It wasn’t her normal avenue of actions but hers obviously weren’t working. She shut her eyes and spoke like a mantra that Anakin would want her to fight. He would want her to escape.
Zara quickly pulled on her boots and grabbed a large jacket by the door. She could feel the chill coming through the door but knew that was the only time it was going to happen.
“I am a Jedi knight. I can do this. I can get back and warn the counsel. I can save Anakin.”
She winced when the cold hit her face and she realized then Obi Wan would feel the air change. She pulled the door shut and started running off in the direction she thought they had come from. There were still some footprints, but it was hard to follow. Snow had drifted over part of their journey, so she stopped to look around. Between the cold and running, her chest was heaving trying to pull in air.
“Zara! Zara you are going to die trying to run off like this!”
She whipped around to her captor having already caught up to her.
“I can’t stay here! I can’t let you manipulate me and hurt Anakin. I won’t!”
“You’re smarter than this!”
“Let me go! If you have one shred of decency in you, let me go!”
He stood up tall and shrugged his jacket off, letting it fall to the ground. He tossed something to Zara, and she caught it quickly, gasping when she realized it was her saber. She looked back up at him as he ignited his blood red blade.
“Fight me. If you can best me, I’ll deliver you back to the temple myself.”
“And if I don’t?”
“Then you stay here and stop trying to get yourself killed.”
She looked down at her saber and considered what he was saying. She had yet to actually see him fight.
“Letting me go would be directly going against your Master.”
“It would.”
“Then why offer me this?”
“If I can’t best a new Jedi Knight then I don’t deserve to keep her captive.”
Resolution washed over her. She ignited her blade and a sick smile spread across the Siths face. She carefully pulled off her own jacket and set it down, not taking her eyes off her enemy. He spun his saber a few times easily and fluidly.
“Come on, darling, it’s cold out here. Time to get this over with so we can get back in the warmth of our home.”
Zara wanted to snarl but instead closed her eyes and took a deep steadying breath. She let herself feel everything within the force. She trusted herself and her abilities. When she opened her eyes, she had a new look of determination. She no longer looked at him as Obi Wan, lost Jedi. He was Lord Veth and he needed to be defeated.
Veth was the first to move forward, quicker than she expected, and their sabers clashed together. He gave her a dangerous smile and broke away, quickly striking again with a fury she was not prepared for. She was able to block every swing, but it frustrated her she couldn’t turn it, so she was on the offensive. She could tell he was holding back and only pushing forward to keep her unbalanced. He felt her frustration and laughed when they locked their sabers together again.
“Darling, have I told you how stunning you look in my clothes?”
In frustration, Zara shot her arm out, using the force to push him back. He was able to keep himself on his feet as he immediately moved forward again. With a grin, Zara raised her hand again and a bright light emanated around her. Veth shielded his eyes, temporarily caught off balance.
“Little knight you surprise me.”
“Stars, do you ever shut up?”
“How rude, we were having such a good conversation. How long are you going to keep this up? I’m stronger than you are, sweetheart. You aren’t going to best me in battle.”
She knew he was right. Between fighting off the cold and trying to use the force so much she was getting exhausted. She stepped forward a few steps, hoping the blinding light would protect her movements just a bit. When she dropped her arm and ceased the blinding light, she quickly brought her saber down. Veth seemed to be expecting it when his arm shot up, using the force to wrap tightly around her throat.
“Now, now. That wasn’t very admirable. You are so much better than cheap tricks.”
He kept the force on her long enough that she dropped her saber and clawed at herself. He watched her struggle until tears welled in her eyes.
“Do you yield, darling?”
She shook her head and he sighed in annoyance. He let go, letting her crash to the ground with a thud. When she tried to move further than up to her knees, she realized that he was still using the force to keep her in place.
“I’m not killing you. Nice try though.”
He held his saber up to her chest and watched as the red danced off her face.
“Yield.”
“Why? You said you won’t kill me.”
“I can maim you. Maybe cut one of your legs off so you can’t run anymore. You only really need one hand. Hope you get my point.”
She glared up at him in defiance. He sighed and moved the blade forward, pressing it against her shoulder. Zara cried out from the burn and he shifted his weight, clearly annoyed.
“I’m not really into torture, dear. Please just yield so we can go inside.”
“No.”
“Fine.”
He reached forward and touched her head, rendering her unconscious instantly. He caught her and pulled her limp body close to his. Once he made sure he had both sabers he started towards the cabin.
“You have so much to learn, little knight. Hopefully you can accomplish that without many more scars.”
---
Zaras eyes fluttered open to immediately seeing the fireplace. She took inventory of her body and other than the tingle of warming limbs, she seemed to be okay. There were blankets under her as padding on the hard floor and a pillow under her head. When she shifted, she realized that the blankets felt way too soft against her skin. She peeked under the blanket to see that she was wearing nothing but her breast band and underwear.
“Your clothes were wet. Not that you believe anything I say but nothing unfavorable happened to you. I may be a monster, but I am not that type.”
She turned her head to look at him. He was sitting leaning against the wall wearing fresh clothes and his hair was wet where it fell in front of his eyes. She sat up slowly making sure one of the blankets was wrapped around her still.
“I placed a bacta patch on your shoulder. It shouldn’t scar too badly.”
She nodded and continued to look at him.
“Surprised you didn’t put force binders on me.”
“Why? The force is the only reason why you didn’t die out there. I don’t think you understand how inhabitable this planet is.”
“You’re mad at me.”
He sighed and brushed his hair back, finally making eye contact with her.
“I’m disappointed that you would be that reckless. You easily could have died.”
“What does it even matter? You accomplished your goal either way. Anakin is at the mercy of your Master and I am out of the picture.”
“You.. Zara I have met many beings in my travels in my life. I have traveled to many planets and seen wars rage around me. Up until I saw you on the battlefield, I had only ever known of one person that cared so deeply for life. It.. got her killed and the galaxy is darker for it.”
“The one you were in love with?”
He nodded and pulled one knee up so he could rest his arm on it. Zara caught herself wanting to console him but kept still. Master Windu had told her multiple times that her compassion could be dangerous. She didn’t want him to be right, but she was trying to figure out how to console her Sith captor.
“S-Satine. Her name was Satine. I was a padawan still when I went to Mandalore to protect her.”
“She was a Mandalorian?”
“Yes, the leader actually. She needed help because she saw a brighter future for her people. A future free of war and loss. She saw peace when no one else could, myself included.”
“Is that why you fell?”
He scoffed and shook his head.
“No. I told you, the Jedi did that to me. Though finding out she was gone did contribute to my anger.”
“I still don’t see how this connects to me.”
“The first thing I noticed about Satine was the fact that she cared so deeply. When faced with opposition she didn’t want to raise a weapon, she wanted to figure out how to stop everyone else from doing so. I followed you and Anakin on one of your first missions. It was the first opportunity that I could get to you without a Jedi Master sensing me the moment I landed.”
“That was nearly two cycles ago.”
“I know. I stood where I could keep the high ground in case you two noticed me. I expected you two to run in with absolutely no plan.”
“That’s what Anakin wanted to do.”
He nodded and she smiled softly at the memory.
“You though, darling, you had a plan. You had a plan to keep every one of your clone troopers safe. Clones. Quite literally made to be dispensable and replaceable. Yet you talked to them and listened to them. Your plan was good. Not strategic or quick, but it was the path of least resistance.”
Zara’s face fell and she sighed.
“I lost three troopers that day. The counsel let me know it was a success but all I felt was heartache. Life had been lost.”
“I saw that too. You don’t look like her nor do you act like her. Not really. You have the same heart though. I thought it was one of a kind but here you are, shining so brightly it’s sickening.”
Zara laughed and wrapped her covered arms around her legs, resting her head on her knees.
“Wont your Master find you weak for not killing me?”
“No. I told him I could turn you to the dark side.”
“I won’t.”
“I know that, sweetheart. I knew that from the beginning. I also knew that his greed and lust for power would see two incredibly young and strong force users under his control. He only needs Skywalker. He won’t pay as much attention to you. You’re just a bonus.”
“That’s.. devious.”
He chuckled and finally smiled fully.
“What else do you expect? I thought that’s all you saw in Sith.”
“You’re openly deceiving your Master.”
“The end goal of a Sith is to overpower their Master. We don’t work with them. We don’t trust them.”
“That sounds like a very lonely life, Obi Wan.”
He gave her a genuine smile. It was free of malice and ulterior motives. Zara couldn’t help but smile back at him, feeling a strange sense of peace flowing between the two.
“So is a life devoid of love and connections. We have two different types of master’s that lead us to the same cruel fate.”
Zara wanted to argue with him. She wanted to tell him that she was happy being a Jedi and didn’t mind the compromises she had to endure because of it. There was a line she had recited a thousand times when faced with questions about her chosen life. At that moment she couldn’t seem to form it into words.
“Your silences speak volumes, Jedi.”
“So do your actions, Sith. Where does that leave us?”
“I suppose we can figure it out tomorrow.”
“Why rush it? Doesn’t seem like either of us are going anywhere anytime soon.”
“How right you are, little knight. A Jedi and a Sith climb into a ship.”
Zara laughed and grinned at her own joke.
“And somehow find a way to understand each other.”
“For now.”
“Right. For now.”
---
Zara wished she wasn’t comfortable. As she laid next to the fire wrapped in comfortable blankets, she felt warm which was something she had been missing for days. The two had fallen into a comfortable silence. When she heard Obi Wan sigh, she turned to look at him. He looked much less comfortable than when she had woken up.
“Are you okay?”
He startled and looked at her, nodding.
“I’m fine, darling. Don’t fret about me. It’s unbecoming of a Jedi Knight.”
She huffed out a sigh and looked at him closer. She noticed the small tremors in his hands.
“You’re cold.”
“You are so rather perceptive.”
“Is your room warm?”
“Not particularly.”
She looked at all the blankets she was wrapped up in and felt guilty.
“Why don’t.. why don’t you come over here?”
His head snapped up at her question and it made her stifle a laugh.
“I can see that you’re cold. Instead of being warm in your own home you’re making sure that I am.”
“What kind of host would I be if I let you freeze to death.”
“Veth.”
“Again, not that kind of monster. Can’t imagine freezing to death would be very comfortable.”
“Can’t imagine? Looks like you are right now.”
He chuckled and went to retort but Zara wasn’t having it.
“Obi Wan.”
He fell silent and looked at her.
“If you can’t look at it as an act of kindness, look at it as an act of self-preservation. You want me to make smart choices, right?”
“Self-preservation.”
“If you die, I’m stuck on the planet with no idea where your ship is. Sitting in the house with a frozen Sith doesn’t sound fun.”
He chuckled and got up, walking over to where she was curled up by the fire. He slipped his outer shirt off and hesitated. Zara held open the blankets, so he climbed in, making sure he wasn’t touching her. When he let out a sigh at the heat she smiled.
“Between the fire and how warm it is in here you should be comfortable soon.”
“It’s already leagues better.”
“Good.”
He looked at her steadily enough that she could see all the shades in his eyes. When he wasn’t threatening or yelling at her she thought that they were almost beautiful. He reached up and gently pushed her hair back, his fingers grazing her skin.
“Stars, Obi Wan, you’re freezing.”
“I’ll survive.”
“You’ve really got to stop running out into the cold chasing stupid Jedi.”
He smirked and nodded, looking down as Zara took his hands in hers.
“Not to be crass, but you would get warmer if you weren’t wearing your clothes.”
He chuckled and shook his head.
“You’re taking all my lines, sweetheart.”
“Just self-preservation, remember?”
“Right. Not an ounce of kindness.”
“For you? Absolutely not. Never.”
He hummed and slipped his shirt off before doing the same with his pants. He was left wearing only his own underwear making it easier for Zara to see just how discolored his skin was.
“Veth, now who is being foolish.”
“I like it better when you call me Obi Wan.”
“Well, Obi Wan doesn’t sound like a fool. So, when you’re acting foolish then I’ll call you by a foolish name.”
He chuckled and shifted closer. They both told themselves it was to get more heat. Both were convinced that the only reason the other was close was to ensure they survived. Survival was smart. Sharing a bed with a sworn enemy was not. So, the easiest way to deal with their situation was to convince themselves that everything was simple.
“Then what do I call you when you’re being foolish?”
“Hmm. You usually call me Jedi.”
“It is one of the worst insults I know.”
“Watch it.”
They both laughed and Zara yawned.
“Get some sleep. Please don’t bolt out the door again.”
“I couldn’t escape without waking you regardless. You’re on the outside of this blanket cocoon. I’d have to uncover you.”
“Very true.”
“Turn around. Face the fire so you can get some heat from it.”
“You could just tell me I’m ugly.”
“Shut up, Veth.”
Obi Wan chuckled and rolled to his right, reveling at the heat of the fire on his face. He didn’t want to admit it, but he had been rather cold. When he felt a small arm wrap around him and Zara’s body press against his back, he had to stop himself from flinching. He felt her rest her forehead against his upper back and nestle in. He could have groaned at how warm she was but absolutely didn’t want to scare her off.
“Maker you’re cold. Next time you kidnap someone bring them to a more temperate planet.”
He chuckled and gently moved his arm, so he could place his hand over hers.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Good.”
He felt her nestle in deeper, getting comfortable up against him. He smiled to himself when her sigh danced across his skin right before she fell asleep. He knew that he should be trying to turn her to the dark. His Master would be furious at his weakness. The idea of trying to corrupt someone so light and kind was repulsive to him.
He could feel her breath steadily fan across his back as she slept peacefully. He hated the Jedi, that much was true. He would never be able to go back nor would he be able to escape the darkness that held him so tightly. Zara didn’t make him forgive the Jedi, but he found himself forgiving her for being one.
It had been a very long time since Obi Wan felt anything but contempt for another living being. He could hardly remember what it felt like to have someone’s arm wrapped around him, no matter the circumstance. He tried to tell himself that he shouldn’t feel anything but the physical sensation of warmth.
The truth though? That warmth meant everything to him.
---
When Zara woke, she didn’t want to open her eyes. She felt warm and comfortable regardless of how sore her body was. She nestled her face into the warmth in front of her and let out a sleepy sigh. When she felt something shift, she froze.
“Did you forget you fell asleep next to me?”
She opened her eyes and found herself looking directly at Obi Wan’s bare chest. He had his arms wrapped around her, holding her close to him.
“I guess I did. Uhm. Sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry. We are both warm. Survival, right?”
She nodded against him, tentatively letting herself nestle back into the heat surrounding them.
“I didn’t.. I didn’t wake you at all I hope?”
“If you had any nightmares they didn’t show. Do you have them most nights?”
“Sleep isn’t something that is usually peaceful for me.”
“Perhaps there was enough darkness around you that your mind didn’t need to manifest any of it.”
Zara looked back up as he looked down, locking eyes with her.
“Your darkness is.. different.”
“Oh?”
He had an amused look on his face but the hesitance in his eyes told Zara that he was uncomfortable. She shook her head and looked back down. They had come to a tentative peace, but he was still dangerous. A different type of darkness didn’t mean it wasn’t dangerous. Obi Wan gently hook his finger under her chin, tilting her head back up.
“You have nothing to fear, darling.”
“We both know that isn’t true.”
He hummed as he ran his thumb across her bottom lip.
“I suppose you are correct. I don’t want you to fear me though. I will not harm you outside of necessity. Now tell me, what did you mean?”
Zara took a steady breath, willing down the nervousness and trepidation. She wasn’t used to being close to people, let alone someone who was an enemy of everything she stood for. She was vulnerable which was something she just was not comfortable with.
“That first day that I saw you, when you confronted Anakin and me. I felt your darkness. I felt it long before I saw you. I’m no stranger to the dark side but I also have never felt it the way that you carry it. You’re dark but.. you’re not chaotic. I see you calculating everything. As much as you say that I am different for my reverence for life, you are different too.”
“You picked all that up when we met?”
“I picked up on it but the longer I’ve been around you the more I see it. I’ve run into other Sith. I’ve fought them. Their energy was hard to be around because it was so unstable.”
“Are you saying I am less of a Sith?”
“No. Your eyes let me know that truth. It’s not that you’re light.”
He chuckled and moved his hand, so he was cupping her face.
“Your darkness is strong. It’s powerful but it isn’t all consuming like the others I’ve come across. You have a control over yourself that rivals even some of the strongest Jedi I have known.”
“Hmm, that almost sounds like a compliment.”
“I guess it is. At the very least it’s an admittance of me being taken by surprise. You are.. not what I expected.”
“Neither are you, darling. Neither are you.”

First Time (Young Remus Lupin x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: Remus’ and (Y/N)’s first time together.
Pairing: Young Remus Lupin x FemReader
Warnings: Maybe language? Smut in the next part. Kinda insanely cheesy 😬
A/N: So I started writing and it’s already a little longer than my normal imagines so I decided just to split it up! Requests are still open! - S
——————————————————————
The Shrieking Shack wasn’t a very pleasant place to be, it was dark and dusty, with broken furniture and torn tatters of fabric for curtains in almost every room. There was also the fact that it was haunted, or it must’ve been because if Albus Dumbledore encouraged the rumors then there must’ve been some truth to it. There wasn’t, but only a handful of people knew that and with there only being one secret entrance to the building it was unlikely to change. Luckily for (Y/N) she was one of those people.
(Y/N) didn’t visit the shack as much as James, Sirius, Peter and Remus did (Remus did not agree with her helping on the full moon).... or at least she hadn’t in the past, but this month she thought she might’ve frequented it more than the boys ever did. Of course, none of them really fancied being there; it was visits of necessity rather than pleasure. However, (Y/N) hoped to change that at least briefly for one of the boys.
Remus took note of her sudden absence in the common room and during meals. There was only about a week before the next full moon and he’d barely seen his girlfriend since the last one. Whenever he asked James or Sirius they would both shrug and suggested playfully that she simply wasn’t into him anymore. Remus knew that they were joking, and he tried to dismiss those thoughts especially whenever she was around (however brief those periods would be), but it was hard. Remus never quite thought she was sane for wanting to be with him; she deserved so much better. So maybe she was finally wising up... maybe she even already found someone else. There was only one irrational way to get to the bottom of this: follow her. And he had to admit he wasn’t pleased to see her use ‘immobulus’ on the Whomping Willow and dip down into the passage that it hid.
(Y/N) looked back at the room and smiled. It had taken a good bit longer than she had originally planned, but she finished and that’s what mattered. Maybe she could even convince Remus to sneak out with her tomorrow night. She’d given herself the task of taking one of the small rooms in the Shrieking Shack and giving it a good makeover. It probably wouldn’t last, she knew how intense Remus’ transformations could get, but her goal was to just give him one happy memory in the otherwise dank home.
“What’s this?” Remus’ voice startled (Y/N) and she jumped a bit. It didn’t take her very long to compose herself though and she beamed at him like a child on Christmas.
“Surprise! I’ve been working on this for awhile, took longer than I thought and I was gonna show you tomorrow night... What do you think?” (Y/N) shuffled a bit, she knew Remus well enough to know she could probably hand him a stone and he’d pretend it was the most thoughtful thing in the world, but she was still a little nervous waiting for his response.
Remus took a minute to take in everything. She’d clearly worked hard and he didn’t want to miss any details. She had chosen a small bedroom on the second floor and not only cleaned it up but gathered lanterns and fresh bedding. In the corner he could see a small table with an assortment of candies and different bottled beverages which looked to be Gillywater and maybe Firewhisky (he was sure that she had help from Sirius, James and Peter on acquiring that since it wasn’t allowed on Hogwarts grounds by students at least). He also spotted a few pillows and blankets spread across the floor as a makeshift seating area.... honestly he was speechless and he felt his stomach drop thinking about what he’d thought she was up to earlier.
That wasn’t the look she was searching for, “I- I’m sorry! I can put it all back the way it was-“
“No! It’s perfect, like maybe one of the nicest things anyone has done and James, Sirius and Peter had to keep a mandrake leaf in their mouth for a month for me,” Remus chuckled a bit, “I just feel bad... I kinda thought you were cheating on me or planning on breaking up with me.”
(Y/N) wrapped her arms around Remus, “I suppose I have been a little secretive lately so I’ll let it slide this time. However, I should hope you would know that I would never do that.”
“Why did you do all this?” Remus questioned. He definitely appreciated her effort, but he wondered about the reasoning. While he would never let her see him firsthand, she’d seen the aftermath of his condition and she knew it wasn’t a gentle one... he was covered in scars and bruises and didn’t want her to be upset if he was unable to control himself and keep the decorations pristine.
“Oh! Well, I know you don’t really like being here and of course that makes sense, but I thought maybe it would be nice to make a couple of good memories here since it’s been a big part of your life.” (Y/N) let him go and began twiddling her thumbs a bit, “I mean... I also thought we’re at a pretty good point in our relationship where... you know?”
Remus went a little rigid, it wasn’t that he didn’t have that desire. It was just he didn’t really want anyone to get THAT close to him, he had felt somewhat guilty about even getting involved with her (everyone told him how stupid he was being and he gave it a shot). He was happy he ignored those feelings because he truly was in love with her and although he knew they were children in most people’s eyes he couldn’t imagine himself with anyone else. But still, this would change everything probably and there was another thing: the scars. He didn’t like that she could see the ones on his face... he shuddered to think how repulsed she’d be when she saw that it didn’t get better. No. He knew that was silly, she wasn’t that type of person but his insecurities still crippled him. “It’s not that I don’t want to, you know that right?”
“I know and please don’t take what I’m about to say the wrong way. If you’re not ready that’s fine and we can have a nice night regardless. I just want you to know that I’m not afraid or worried about anything. I love you... all of you, including the parts you don’t want me to see.” (Y/N) shot him an encouraging smile, “I don’t mind waiting.”
“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to try...” Remus gave in. He still didn’t want to make any promises in case he backed out; he did have the tendency to over think things and get in his own head.

Heaven In Hiding - Bryce x MC | Part I
Book/Pairing(s): MC x Bryce
Word Count: Part I - 1196 words (oops)
Rating: 18+ due to swearing and mature scenes in later chapters of the fanfic.
Summary: This fanfic is based on the imagined scene after Bryce asks MC to leave separately in the latest open heart: Third Year Chapter.
Category: Mini series, somewhat angst but also fluff later on!
Warnings / Trope: Swearing, mature scenes
Since there are rumours that Bryce’s chapter this week wasn’t plot related and people are disappointed (including me!) I’m gonna do a small dabble in what I would follow up with that scene and the aftermath of how Bryce was so it makes some sort of sense. I haven’t written in a while as I’ve been super busy so I’m nervous to post this but anyway! Also excuse the gif quality, I like using them to set the scene but it came out a bit blurry. They’ll be posted everyday over the next week. :) Hope you enjoy! ❤️ let me know if you wanna be tagged!

After two years of chasing each other, whispers from friends and stolen moments, Casey Valentine can feel herself falling for Bryce Lahela. Casey is waiting for Bryce to tell her how he feels but after an intimate escape to the garden roof, Casey realises what and who she wants most in the world may hurt her more than anything else.
Song: Strange Love - Halsey | Everybody wants to know about how it felt to hear you scream. They know you walk like you're a god, they can't believe I made you weak. We wrote a story in the fog on the windows that night but the ending is the same every damn time.
Casey felt as though there was a lump in her throat and had that awful sinking feeling in her stomach when the words, “we wouldn’t want anyone to see us would we?” left Bryce’s lips. They had been certainly more than friends for the past two years of their residency. Casey knew the moment she saw Bryce and his stupid smirk that she wouldn’t be able to resist him. His confidence and the way he was able to make her pulse race with just his words was intoxicating. But ever since she had been let into his life a little, meeting his sister and listening to him vent about his parents, she realised that Bryce often used his confidence as a shield to hide his vulnerability. Which only made her fall for him even more. After the events that took place at the hospital where she almost died, she really thought that she could be in love with Bryce Lahela. She was falling in love with the surgeon with the best hands and the sexiest smirk. She wondered if Bryce had felt the same, but knowing that he had some walls up, she thought it would be best to let Bryce express his feelings when he was ready. She was sure he would, soon enough.
That all changed the moments those words left his lips. Casey stared at him, her eyes searching for something. She wasn’t sure what, a look of love? Affection? Something. Anything. But Bryce was stiff. He looked at her, a look in his eyes that she had never seen before and couldn’t quite work out. It was like the Bryce she knew and cared for wasn’t in the room. Like the man in front of her was a shell.
“Uh, I’ll go first.” Bryce awkwardly blurted out, rubbing the back of his neck. Casey scoffed.
“No. It’s fine. I’ll go.” Casey shook her head and pushed herself past Bryce, slamming the door on her way out.
Bryce knew he had fucked up. He groaned, his first meeting the wall slightly as he punched it in frustration. His breathing was heavy, and his eyes were closed as he tried to calm himself down. ‘You’re a fucking dumbass’ he thought to himself. After a few moments of cursing under his breath, he straightened his jacket and walked out of the garden roof.
Casey had already gotten back to the party, but she wasn’t in the party mood anymore. She was terrified that she would burst into tears in front of everyone. She sighed as she went to the drinks table, pulling herself a large glass of champagne and downing it in one go. Her thoughts were racing in anger, frustration and slight heartbreak. Get a grip of yourself, Casey. You knew Bryce always had a bit of a reputation and every goddamn nurse in this hospital flirts with him. Why would he stick to just you? Breathe.
Jackie walked over to Casey, laughing at the fact the glass in Casey’s hand had lasted a mere 5 seconds before being downed.
“Well, if this is what you’re going to do to get this party started, then I’m all in.” Jackie joked, clinking her glass with Casey’s. Her laugh faltered when she saw Casey’s weak smile in reply to her joking.
“Wait, what’s wrong?” Jackie raised her brow at Casey.
“Nothing. I’m just not feeling too good.” Jackie knew she was lying. Casey’s eyes trailed behind Jackie, landing on Bryce who was looking around the room. Their eyes met and Casey couldn’t help but tear her eyes away from him.
“Would it have anything to do with the fact you and Bryce were both gone for the last 45 minutes?”
“I can’t do this. I’m going home.”
“Whoa wait, let me come with you.”
“Nah, honestly, I need some time alone. And anyway, who’s gonna force Elijah and Aurora to do shots if you’re not here?” Casey laughed weakly, putting her bag over her shoulders. “I’ll text you when I’m home. Ok?” Jackie nodded, pulling Casey into a hug.
Casey hastily walked out of the hospital, the cold air hitting her as she walked home. The cold, fresh air was welcoming. It made her feel calmer than she had felt in the hospital. She just wanted to go home, curl up into her bed and cry it out. She’d be fine by tomorrow. At least, that’s what she hoped. Wishful thinking.
When Casey had finally gotten home, she slid her dress off and threw on her dressing gown, grabbing a bottle of wine out of the fridge to pour herself a glass. She sat at the kitchen island, staring out at the world beneath her from the penthouse window. She thought about the people going about her lives, which made her think of her residency. She knew it was coming to an end this year, something she has been in denial about for quite some time. She didn’t want to leave her friends... or Bryce behind. She always thought that maybe her place on the diagnostics team may help her stay close to home. Close to Bryce. As Bryce popped into her mind, she sighed gently and put her head in her hands. ‘How unfair is it that the only person you ever want to talk to when something goes wrong, is the one person who hurt you so you can’t go to them?’ Casey thought to herself. When something went wrong in the hospital, Bryce was the first person she’d text or find. When something went wrong outside the hospital, all it took was for Casey to text Bryce a “🖕” emoji for Bryce to know she needed to vent. He always replied within minutes. Even if it was to tell her he couldn’t reply but would as soon as he could.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. ‘That’ll be Sienna’ Casey thought, laughing to herself as she prepared to deal with a very drunk and Disney singing Sienna. She opened the door, and her breath hitched when she looked up.
Bryce was stood at the door, his hair a mess as if he had been running his hands through his hair, a look of regret on his face.
“W-what are you doing here Bryce? I don’t want to talk to you.” Casey mentally cursed herself at her voice cracking.
“Case, please.” Casey scanned his face. He was the only one that ever called her Case. Casey wasn’t sure whether she even liked that nickname, but coming from Bryce, she loved anything that came from his lips. Especially something that was unique between them like her nickname. She could have sworn her heart fluttered when she sent Bryce a funny hospital meme whilst being sat next to him, and whilst waiting for him to see it, realised the name for her in his phone had changed from “Casey Valentine” to “Case”.
As much as she was angry and hurt by him tonight, she couldn’t let him go. She couldn’t bear to see the pain on his face. She opened the door slightly and stepped aside, giving him permission to come inside.

Hewoo im the yan!fem reader x trey anon uwu Ahhh omg thank you so much i love how it turned out 🤧🤧🤧
Also since youre accepting requests for valentines, i would like to request another yan!fem reader and trey again if you dont mind. I reread the new prompt list and i saw actually "3" prompts that i think could be connected somehow (?) Theyre actually prompts 73, 74 and 232. But if youre not comfortable with doing it, its ok uwu Anyways thank you again, Mia-san 🙇‍♀️
(Ohh and before i forget again, its up to you if you wanna do it in sfw or nsfw im fine with either hehehe)
(You’re right they do kinda sound connected! Sorry this isn’t nsfw I wasn’t feeling when I was writing >_<) 73. “If I hurt myself, will you take care of me?” 74. “I love it when you take care of me. I think I’ll hurt myself more just so you could do it forever.” 232. “The thought of you not talking to me makes me want to drive a knife through my skull!” (Trey Clover x Yandere! Fem S/o)
Trey was trapped. Not physically of course, no physically he looked to be as free as a bird. But emotionally and mentally? Oh, his being was essentially kept captive under lock and key. Who was the holder of the key? Why his crazy ex-girlfriend (Y/n) of course! Well, she was his crazy ex-girlfriend in his mind… in her mind, she was his quite sane and current girlfriend. It was not an understatement to say that the bespectacled male lived day to day in fear of when the young woman would go on a murderous killing spree.
Luckily it seemed that day was still far off in the future as (Y/n) current hobby was getting Trey to baby her. It had started with an innocent enough comment, during their mandatory hour of cuddling in the evening the young woman had said “If I hurt myself, will you take care of me?” catching the boy off guard causing him to stutter nonsensically for a few moments before finally answering “Yes, I would but I’d rather you didn’t go hurting yourself” to her question. The next day he’d been called to the nurse’s office and found (Y/n) was lying in a bed with a mysterious stab wound and a playful grin. Trey had wanted to call her out for maiming herself but didn’t dare cause a scene while there were other people present who might get caught in the crossfire of the young woman’s erratic behavior. He’d spent the next few weeks barely away from the girl’s bedside as he took care of her like the diligent boyfriend he was forced to play the role of.
I love it when you take care of me. I think I’ll hurt myself more just so you could do it forever” (Y/n) cooed as Trey helped her change the bandages around her stomach: removing the blood-soaked gauze, washing the skin, and then rewrapping her middle with fresh dressing. “I can’t wait until we’re old enough to get married, baby and you can be my sweet little househusband” the girl went on in a dreamy tone as she tenderly stroked the boy’s face with one hand.
“Why? Why are you doing this? Why would you go to such insane lengths (Y/n)?” Trey said with a sigh not really expecting the girl to give him any kind of answer at all. “Because you’re mine silly, everything about you belongs to me and only me. And yet… people keep trying to get between us and ruin what we have together. It pisses me off beyond belief and I just want to kill all those annoying assholes so we could live our lives without their constant harassment night and day” the girl said in a hiss as her face darkened with displeasure.
”But if I did that then you’d get very angry with me and might decide to not talk to me and I can’t bear to let that happen” (Y/n) went on her expression softening into a pout. “The thought of you not talking to me makes me want to drive a knife through my skull! I can’t help it, my life wouldn't be worth living if you aren’t in it” she went on staring at Trey with big eyes. The boy sighed again, he knew he was being manipulated but what could he do about it? Better to keep her happy so nobody, including her, got hurt...  THE END

Could we please get some relationship headcanons for Ezra, Juvia and Mira?
Hello! I’ve been taking so long recently it’s soooooo annoying but the good news is that camps almost over and so is my algebra class. Hopefully I’ll be able to write more soon. I really loved this ask anon so thank you so much for being patient. It’s not as long as I would have liked but I think it does it’s job. Anyways I think I’m gonna take some time after cleaning out my inbox to write up something in a different fandom cause I haven’t had the chance yet. Hopefully if I write something fresh I can get back in my mojo and open up my requests again. Anyways I hope y’all like these since I really enjoyed writing them.

- It’s no secret that the armor changing red-head known as Erza Scarlet was a fierce warrior but what nobody ever knew was how she was with her darling s/o
- For such a wild and commanding woman, Erza was surprisingly gentle with you, letting you take control of the situation more often than not
- Date locations, meals, clothes, activities, jobs even, all of it was your choice
- Unless of course you wanted to do something that was to dangerous or risky
- That was when Erza stepped in and helped you consider another option
- Still she appreciated anything and everything that you decided to do
- It was quite obvious that Erza loved you very much
- Everytime she went away on a job she would make sure you had a communication lacrama and something to eat for the week, money and other essentials
- Then she kissed you goodbye and left for her mission
- Erza was never gone long so you never had to worry but you still found a way
- When she came back from her job she always brought you a gift
- Sometimes it was flowers, sweets you could share, a monster horn, jewls, silks and other expensive things
- And everytime she asked if you liked them you told her that her coming home was the best gift of all
- Y'all had an unnecessarily sappy relationship and it seemed to annoy many people around you but the knew better than to speak up lest the great Titania raise her blade to their necks
- Being together with Erza meant you had a close friendship with the rest of team Natsu, even going so far as to help Erza sneak into Lucy’s house with the rest of the group and have sleepovers
- Y'all had fun together but at the end of the day it was just the two of you laying together on the floor pretending that Natsu and Gray weren’t snoring
- As you fell asleep Erza would watch you and thank whoever was out there that she had gotten so lucky, even with such a nasty start her life was turning out to be perfect ❤️

Juvia:
- Juvia is a… unique kind of lover
- She talked in third person, acted suspiciously when you were around other guys and girls, and was always giving you anniversary gifts when it wasn’t really an anniversary
- But this was just another part of her charm and another reason you loved her
- It took very little time to get together at all since she is so persistent with her attempts at wooing her beloved
- In the beginning you were a little nervous since you guys rushed into a relationship but once you were together Juvia let you take it as slow as you wanted
- It started with nervous pecks on the cheek and maybe hesitant hugs that you should have limited but wanted everyday
- Soon you became more comfortable with physical affection and all the praise she gave you constantly
- You didn't need any reassurance that she loved you but Juvia did
- Her whole life people found her rain gloomy and she was worried that you would find rain to be gloomy as well but she was pleasantly surprised to find that you enjoyed the rain
- Maybe you didn't want to stand in it for hours on end but watching the rain through your windows with a mug of something warm and a blanket around your shoulders was very peaceful
- Juvia would join you and you would tell her that you loved the rain and that you loved her more
- She would probably pass out afterwards with hearts in her eyes
- This water mage is a hopeless romantic
- If you give her flowers or chocolates she might die of happiness
- Forget that if you give her anything she’ll die of happiness
- Expect many at home dates where no one can look at you or ‘flirt’ with you or steal you from her
- (she’s got some lowkey yandere vibes but there only minor lol)
- You’ll probably watch some pretty exciting movies together so she can watch the emotions on your face change
- Maybe even something scary so you can grab her or she can grab you (whether or not she’s actually scared ;)
- Dates will be super chill over all and even though she’s not the most chill person it’ll still be a chill relationship
- All Juvia wants is for you to be happy and with her that's the happiest you’ll be ❤️
Tumblr media
Mira:
- Mirajane Strauss would be super fun to date
- Like really fun
- You probably had a crush on her for a while before she pulled the classic ‘my shifts over at ??:?? You wanna go grab a bite’
- She would take you to a casual but still nice restaurant (the kind where you don’t have to dress up but it’s got good food)
- You guys would talk and eat and you’d tell yourself over and over again it was just a friend thing cause obviously someone as cool as Mira wouldn’t like you but then when she walked you home she would say “that was fun we should go out again sometime”, kiss you on the cheek and walk away
- Mira is smooth
- Y'all almost fainted when she did that
- After that you guys would go out regularly and when you didn’t have time to go out she would let Kinana take the reigns and Mira would make you your favorite drink for free
- You guys would chat and flirt and everyone in Fairy Tail would give you guys looks and winks
- People still catcalled Mira but anyone smart knew that you were hers and stay away from you cause the she devil is possessive
- Friendship was fine but the second some random guest crossed a line Mira would probably shoot him/her one of her famous glares and they’d head for the hills
- And if you were hurt… dear god help their souls
- Mira would probably go full devil on them
- She wouldn’t hurt them too much though but only because she knew you didn’t like it when she did that
- Afterwords she’d take you home to her know private apartment (Lisanna got herself her own place) and snuggle with you and make you food
- And gosh is Mira’s food good
- If you guys have a fight and Mira wanted to apologize she would do it by making your favorite meal and dessert
- You could never say no to Mira’s cooking yet somehow you never gained any weight
- It was magical (probably literally)
- The other Strauss siblings came with Mira
- It was a full package and you didn't mind, in fact you enjoyed the sister like bond you had with lisanna and the laughs you shared with Elfman
- Friday was family night so all 4 of you would get together and play a game or watch a movie
- Mira loved you most in those moments
- When she looked around and saw the pure domesticity of the situation it helped her forget all the nasty stuff in the world and focus on what was important, the people that she loved
- Including you ❤️

Chapter 5 here we go!!!
The next morning, you woke to find Ben missing from his hammock. You rolled out of yours, careful to land on your feet, and then headed upstairs to the deck. The morning was misty and chilly. You shivered and hunched your shoulders as you pressed on. You found him at the bow, looking out over water, clouded by fog. His expression was hard. Distressed. You placed a hand on his shoulder to alert him to your presence. You felt his muscles relax beneath your touch as he turned to face you.
“Good morning,” he said shortly.
Is it? You questioned.
He shook his head. “No...no, I suppose it isn’t.”
Talk to me, you insisted. Why are you so upset by this?
“Because,” he said. “A king is supposed to protect his people. To run his kingdom with knowledge and care. Until I joined Behati, I didn’t know anything that was going on. I feel...stupid. And completely unprepared for the next step in my life.”
Well, you know now, you said, trying to be encouraging. Maybe now when you do get home, you can explain what you’ve seen to your father and work together to fix it.
“That’s another thing that’s bothering me,” he said. “I don’t like to think my father knows about this and is ignoring it, but what if that is the case? What if he isn’t ignorant and he just doesn’t care? What do I do then?”
I can’t say for sure, since I don’t know him, you signed. But if he's anything like you, then there is no way this information wouldn’t affect him. Look at how your heart is hurting for your people. If your father has half your heart, it will shock him, and he will do everything he can to correct it.
A hint of a smile passed over his lips.
“I hope so,” he said. “But who knows when I’ll be able to get back to him?”
You aren’t Behati’s prisoner, you reminded him. I’m sure she’d take you back home if that’s what you wanted.
He shook his head again. “No, not really. She’s so close now to finding Sycoria. And I’m not ready for this adventure to end yet. Crazy as it’s been, and as much danger as I’ve encountered, I’ve never had so much fun.”
You raised a questioning eyebrow at him.
“It seems completely mental, I know,” he chuckled. “But...before, I was looking at the life that was being handed to me. It was soft and comfortable in the palace. With a pretty wife who would take my word second only to God’s, and give me heirs. I’d do the same things every day, with the same people, without any idea of what goes on beyond the palace walls. It was frightening. Running away from that - especially the marriage - was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
You don’t want to get married? You wondered, a little dejected.
“I do someday,” he said. “But right now it just felt like a way to trap me and keep me right where I was. I barely even had a taste of freedom.”
Believe me, that I understand, you signed.
“Controlling parents?” he asked.
You nodded. A controlling father, mostly. My mother died when I was little.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “What happened to her?”
Pirates, you told him, because you couldn’t say “humans.”
Ben heaved a sigh. The wind blew and you shuddered.
“Cold?” he asked.
You nodded, hugging yourself. He offered a gentle smile as he shrugged off his coat and draped it over your shoulders. You smiled gratefully at him. Then, he did something you did not expect. He pulled you into his arms and held you there. Your soft gasp was lost in his shirt as you rested your forehead against his chest. His embrace was warm and comfortable. You could hear his heart beating.
“The world is cruel,” he said heavily. “I’ve seen a great deal of wickedness and devastation since I left home, but I must say that you, Y/N, have been a bright light.”
Your heart skipped a beat at his words and you felt heat rise to your face.
“Despite all you’ve been through, you’ve remained kind and gentle,” he went on. “You’re genuinely the sweetest person I’ve ever met. I know it’s only been a couple days, but you’re a very precious friend to me.”
You looked up and beamed at him. He held your gaze and seemed to inch closer. Your stomach turned at the thought. Was he going to kiss  you? Already? You were definitely fond of each other, but was it love? It certainly felt like the beginnings of it.
He pressed his lips to your forehead. You released a breath of relief. As badly as you wanted to kiss him - and you knew what was at risk if it didn’t happen - now was not the time. He was vulnerable, and he needed support. It would have felt like taking advantage of a weak moment.
“You’re freezing, you should get out of the wind,” he remarked as he pulled away.
I’m warmer with you, you returned. Besides, I miss the sea.
His brow furrowed. You had not meant to make that thought apparent, so your mind raced to come up with how to back track.
I just mean that I miss my old life, you signed, going vaguer.
“Tell me about it,” he said. “Goodness, you’ve listened to me ramble on about my nonsense long enough.”
You smiled. What do you want to know?
“Let’s start with where you’re from,” he said.
It’s a whole other world, you signed. Beautiful in some ways and completely frustrating in others. I had interests my father didn’t approve of, and eventually I was punished for doing something I considered to be the right thing. I knew I had to get away.
“That’s the worst, isn’t it?” he said. “Feeling like your parents are just trying to control you.”
Especially when they say it’s just because they know what’s best, you replied. How can they know what’s best if they don’t listen?
“Honestly!” he agreed. “All we want is the choice to make our life for ourselves.”
Absolutely, you signed. It’s about freedom.
“Thanks for this, Y/N,” he said. “For listening and sharing. It’s been a real treat.”
You smiled again. Whenever you were around Ben, no matter how serious the discussion got, you always ended up smiling. You hoped that was how it would always be.
The sun began to rise over the water and the air warmed up. You returned Ben’s coat to him just as Behati was emerging from her quarters to address the crew.
“Ladies and Benjamin!” she began excitedly. “We now have the way to find Sycoria!”
Everyone cheered, including Ben. You clapped enthusiastically. Maybe if Behati was successful, you’d be free too.
“I’ve waited years for this moment,” she continued. “I’ve been a prisoner on my own ship all these years, but no more. But I wouldn’t be the captain I am without each of you. I collected my crew carefully, choosing those who I knew could work with me, and bring a fresh perspective. You have all proven more than worthy. Before we take on this final stretch of our journey, I’m letting you all celebrate. Our next stop is Dram, so you can all enjoy the Mermaid Festival, and then, we go after Sycoria with everything we’ve got!”
The crew cheered again. You shot Ben a questioning look. You had never been to a human festival before, and to hear they had one dedicated to mermaids was both scary and intriguing.
“The mermaid festival celebrates Saint Asenora,” Ben explained. When your face lit up with recognition, he laughed. “My mother is named for the saint, but is not the saint herself. They both come from Dram, and my mother got her name because she was the first girl born to the Duke’s family there since the time of the saint.”
That’s incredible!
“We’ll dock in Dram tonight,” Behati said. “So you’ll have the whole day to celebrate tomorrow.”
You counted it up in your head. That would mean after the festival, you would only have another day with Ben.
Why is the saint celebrated at the Mermaid Festival? You asked.
“Because the legend goes that Asenora was a mermaid, and she fell in love with a human man,” he said. “She went to a witch to make her human, and the witch did it, but at great cost to Asenora. Her new legs were painful, and if the man did not love her in return, she would become sea foam.”
You swallowed. That hit a little too close to home.
What happened with the man? You asked.
“She found him, but he was already married,” Ben went on. “His wife was not as beautiful as Asenora, but she saw the smile on his face, and knew he was happy. Unwilling to disrupt his peaceful life, she sacrificed herself to the witch’s fate.”
That’s a horrible story, you signed with a pout.
“It doesn’t end there,” he said. “God had seen what Asenora did, and that her love was pure. He saved her spirit, and named her saint of the sea. Sailors across the kingdom pray to her for safe passage. Every year, they celebrate her at the Mermaid Festival.”
Well, that’s not so bad, you signed. But it’s still sad she never found love.
“Perhaps,” he said. “But lots of good came of it.”
You shrugged. Makes sense.
You and Ben spent the day together, working, talking, and laughing. Ben found himself impossibly more attracted to you as time went on. All he wanted was to be by your side. As he watched you help Ari with a rope, the way your face scrunched up in your way which was so cute. Your bright smile and sparkling eyes. The goodness and openness of your heart.
He felt a hand on his shoulder which drew him out of his stupor.
“Y/N,” Behati said. “How do you feel about her?”
“She’s great,” he answered bashfully. “Really helpful and sweet and patient and -”
“Pretty?” she finished.
His cheeks got pinker.
“She’s beautiful,” he said.
“There seems to be a real connection there,” she observed. “She likes you too.”
“Captain, what are you getting at?” he asked pointedly.
“I’m saying that what I see is the beginning of what we call love,” she said. “And I think you should pay attention to that.”
He blinked, astounded. He had never thought about it like that. But his attraction and appreciation of you definitely stood out to him. He had never felt that way about a woman before. But love?
“I dunno if we’re there yet,” he said with a shrug. “But I...I really like her.”
“I’m glad to hear it,” she replied. “Show her a good time tomorrow.”
“I will,” he said. I’m actually excited for it.”
Behati smiled, nodded, and then left him to his work again. She walked over to you.
You beamed at the captain as she approached, but it faltered at the look on her face. She looked serious.
“Y/N, come with me to my quarters, we need to talk,” she said.
What’s this about? You wondered.
“Just come with me,” she insisted.
You put down your things and followed her. You shot Ben a questioning look as you passed him, but he only shrugged. He watched you disappear into Behati’s room.
“Hey, Ben,” Ari said. “Don’t you think that a sweet, charming girl that’s right in front of you might be better than some mystery woman you aren’t even sure exists?”
He sighed. “I suppose…”
Inside, Behati  sat on her desk, facing you. You stood before her, a questioning expression on your features.
“We’ve never addressed this, but I did see you that day you rescued Ben,” she began. “And you didn’t have legs. You were a mermaid.”
You looked at the floor and nodded.
“And I know Sycoria gave you your legs,” she said.
You nodded again.
“What was the price?” she asked. “And what are the conditions of your agreement?”
You took a deep breath. Then, you explained everything. How you’d always been fascinated by humans, that night you listened on the side of the ship and that was how you were there to rescue Ben. You told her your father punished you for it, and then you went to Sycoria to become human. You even told her the limits of your spell. That after the festival you would only have another twenty-four hours to get Ben to kiss you.
“Well, you’re in luck, he likes you,” she said. “How do you feel about him?”
I’m starting to fall in love with him, you signed. He’s so brave and kind and caring. And we both value freedom and love. It feels like we’re meant to be.
“You very well may be,” she agreed. “The only thing is Ben is still caught up on the woman he thinks saved him. I think you should tell him the truth. During the festival.”
You nodded. I agree. I want to be totally honest with him so that he doesn’t feel tricked.
“I like that,” she said. “To get this going, I’ve got something for you.”
A present?
She smiled and then crossed the room to her wardrobe. You watched eagerly as she opened the door, reached in, and pulled out a gorgeous gown that was on a hanger. Your mouth dropped as you looked at it. It was stunning - gold thread with soft pink lace and delicate frills along the sleeves and neckline. You had never seen such a garment.
“Wear this,” she said with a smirk. “That should put some serious hearts in his eyes.”
But if it’s yours, how will it fit me?! You wondered.
“It was actually part of a plunder I took a few years back,” she said. “I think it looks about your size. Dresses never suited me anyway. But they do suit a princess.”
You grinned. Thank you so much.
“You’re welcome,” she said. “Shall we try it on?”
You nodded enthusiastically.
Behati had everything that went with the dress - the undergarments, corset, and even gold slippers to match it. As she finished lacing you up, you finished letting your hair out of the braids. Then she walked you over to the mirror that was on the wall. You gasped.
“My, my, you’re stunning!” she cried. “Look at you, gorgeous!”
You blushed, flattered by her praise, especially since you found her so beautiful.
Thank you, you signed. I really feel like a princess now.
“You look like one,” she said. “You are one. Ben is a lucky, lucky prince.”
You blushed deeper.
“We’ll be docking soon,” she said. “Stay in here as long as you like. I’ll have Ari and Kay get you dressed tomorrow.”
You giggled together, and then she departed. You looked at yourself again, twirling gently back and forth. You pictured yourself on Ben’s arm, looking like you actually belonged there. The way this dress would shift and move, the way it would swirl as you danced. The festival became a whole lot more exciting.
When you docked at Dram, You had changed back into your crew clothes, but the dress was carefully packed and with Ari. Behati also handed Ari a pouch of gold to pay for rooms at the inn. She whispered some instructions into Ari’s ear that you guessed were about the dress. The captain shot you a knowing smile, and then you were all off into town.
Dram was much more peaceful than Henrietta. There was a heavier military presence and the people were clearly wealthier. Most of the women had jewels around their necks and fingers. Their dresses were made of luxury fabrics, and most of them were escorted by a man.
Not that there wasn’t poverty. There certainly was. The shopkeepers and merchants were dressed similarly to yourself and Behati’s crew. Although, the dress you knew was waiting for you would make you fit in right along with those fine ladies.
The inn was not too far from the dock, and Ari went to check you all in. The innkeeper gave Ari the keys, and she began assigning rooms. Your stomach turned when she said that you and Ben would be sharing.
“Strictly for space,” Ari said. “You see, everyone else is rooming with their partners.”
You nodded slowly. I suppose that’s alright. Ben?
“If you’re comfortable, Y/N, then so am I,” he said.
There was a reassurance in his voice that eased you.
“Y/N, come to my room tomorrow morning,” Ari said. “For your gift from Behati.”
She handed you the room key and winked. Ben looked between the two of you, confused.
“What?” he questioned. “Behati’s given you something?”
You nodded. It’s not important right now. Let’s just get to our room.
He agreed, and you walked upstairs together. You went to the room indicated on your key, and you turned the lock. You opened the door and walked in. The room was nice and cozy but to your horror, there was only one bed.
There must be a mistake, you signed. Ari would get us separate beds.
“Relax,” Ben replied, though he was also nervous. “I’ll go downstairs and see if there’s another. Wait right here.”
He left, and you stood in the doorway, anxiety coming off of you in waves. Being so close to Ben - sharing a bed - that would create a whole other level of intimacy between you. You didn’t have much time to fret before he returned.
“Sorry, no luck,” he said. “Between the Mermaid Festival guests and now us, all the other rooms are booked.”
You nodded and swallowed.
“If it makes you uncomfortable, I can sleep on the floor,” he offered, scratching his neck.
No, you signed. We can share. That is, as long as you’re okay with it.
“Of course!” he said, and at the look of surprise at his enthusiasm, he collected himself. “Sorry. I just, uh...I dunno, I like being close to you, Y/N.”
You smiled. I like being close to you too.
It was getting late, so you both got ready for bed. Ben watched as you slowly shed a few layers of clothing. He found himself blushing at the sight of your bare shoulder, and the soft skin there. He resisted a brutal urge to walk up behind you and press his lips to it.
He shook his head and began to take off his own clothes. You peeked over your shoulder and tried to not drool as his shirt came off and you saw his body. He had tan lines from his work and time with Behati, but it did not take away the appeal of his strong build. You happily would have thrown yourself into those arms.
“Are you ready?” he asked, bringing you back out of your thoughts.
You nodded stiffly. He allowed you to get in the bed first, and you hesitantly pulled back the blankets and slid into the spot. As he followed suit, you became acutely aware of his body heat beside you. You looked resolutely away from him, so you wouldn’t make him uncomfortable, but you felt his eyes on you as he settled in.
He chuckled. “You can look at me, you know.”
You turned your head in his direction, but your eyes remained fixed on the sheets. His forefinger and thumb came to your chin, and he gently lifted your face to his.
“Look, I understand that this is a bit uncomfortable,” he said kindly. “But I think we should focus on the positives. At least now, we have time to talk without any interruptions or worrying about anyone overhearing us.”
Should we have worried about that before? You asked.
He shrugged. “I dunno. But I like that it’s just you and me now. So tell me something new about you.”
You smiled. You considered confessing to him now where you really came from and the deal with Sycoria, but it still felt too crazy. And you wanted to know how he felt about you before taking the risk. So you talked about other things to pass the time. You talked with him until your eyelids grew heavy. You settled yourself against him and rested your head on his shoulder. Sleep took you. Ben watched you ease into slumber and admired your peaceful expression for a while before it came for him as well. He slipped out of consciousness with his arms around you.
You woke the next morning warm and cozy in Ben’s embrace. It was so comfortable you almost didn’t want to get up and go anywhere. But you were excited about the festival. And you thought it might be the perfect place for you and Ben to have your first kiss. And you could finally tell him everything.
Ben’s eyes fluttered open and met yours gazing at him. He smiled lazily.
“Morning,” he said, his voice gravelly from sleep.
Good morning, you signed back. I’ve got to get to Ari’s room, but I didn’t want to disturb you.
“I wish you could stay,” he said through a yawn. “You’re so cozy.”
You grinned. I’d be content to stay here with you for days, but we do have a festival to see.
“That’s true,” he conceded. “I’ll come get you in an hour, yeah?”
You nodded.
To your own dismay, you got out of bed, dressed quickly, and went down the hall to Ari’s room. Ben drifted back off for a bit, but found himself missing the feeling of you next to him.
When you got to Ari’s room, she, Kay, Sharna, and several other girls were in there waiting for you. Ari flashed you a knowing smile.
“How was your night?” she asked.
It was….nice, you signed with a sheepish grin. He just held me all night.
“Awww,” Sharna cooed. “What a sweetheart he is.”
“Well, let’s get you dolled up for your sweet man,” Ari said.
They all jumped in. While Ari was getting you dressed, the others were helping you with your hair. You really felt like a princess, but not the kind you were in the sea. The kind from storybooks. Only, you didn’t have servants. You had friends.
Before you knew it, there was a knock at the door. Ben had arrived. Ari went to answer it, and she allowed him in. When he saw you standing there, in that elegant dress, with your hair curled and styled, and just a hint of rouge on your cheeks and lips, his jaw dropped. The breath was stolen out of his body, and his face grew warm.
“Y/N, you - I - wow - you look….you look…” he sputtered.
“Beautiful?” Ari finished.
“Yeah,” he said, eyes still locked onto yours. “Stunning, actually.”
You flushed under his gaze and tried to relax. Somehow, you were more nervous around him now. It felt like he was properly courting you or something. The feeling only grew when he bent at the waist and bowed to you, extending his hand.
“Y/N, I would be honored if you would allow me to escort you to the festival today,” he said.
You took his hand, and he looked up. You beamed at him and nodded. He grinned back, losing the dignified air he’d created, and you were back to normal. Only, there was a real feeling of couplehood blossoming.
He began to lead you out the door. Ari wished you good luck and said they’d be around if you and Ben needed anything. You both waved to her quickly, and then you were off.
Ben took the lead, since he had been to the festival before. It was mostly local vendors selling products relating to the legend. People were everywhere, shopping and talking. Children darted back and forth, collecting candy and toys. Laughter and music floated through the air. Ben took you first to get a seashell crown to wear.
“That really suits you, Y/N,” he said, placing it carefully atop your head.
Thank you, you replied.
You continued walking. It shocked you to witness how fascinated humans were by mermaids. There was mermaid art, mermaid jewelry, mermaid themed food. None of it was accurate, but it was certainly amusing to you.
You stopped at another booth, where you purchased a pendant for Ben. It was silver, hung down to his chest, and had a perfectly round pearl at the end. It was delicate, but still looked handsome on him.
“Y/N, you don’t have to do all this,” he said, admiring it. “This is much too kind a gift.”
You have been most kind to me, you replied. I want to show you I’m grateful to know you.
He pulled you close and kissed your forehead.
“Thank you so much,” he said.
You beamed at each other.
Exploring the Mermaid Festival took most of the day, but it was a whole day you got to spend with Ben. You talked, laughed, shopped, and got to know each other. In the afternoon, you went to the town square to see the dancing.
A group of string players were creating a jaunty and upbeat tune. The dance was known to the citizens, as they were all in step with each other. You even saw Ari and Kay out there together. Ben looked over and saw your eager expression.
“Would you like to dance?” he asked.
You nodded so hard, he laughed.
Taking you hand, he led you out. You got a bit nervous since you had never danced before and you didn’t know the steps.
“Don’t worry,” Ben said, as if reading your mind. “Follow my lead, and keep the beat in your head.”
His reassuring smile made you forget all apprehension. You leapt into the crowd, one hand in Ben’s, the other on his shoulder, while his free hand took your waist. Nothing else mattered. You danced and danced, and whether or not the steps were right was of little consequence. You were in Ben’s arms, moving together, with laughter in your eyes and on your lips.
The song came to an abrupt, but jubilant halt, and you stopped, breathless and smiling. Ben was similarly delighted. Then you both burst into laughter.
“That was great, Y/N!” he praised. “For someone who once struggled to walk, you’re a helluva dancer!”
You smirked. Well, I think with dancing, it’s about having the right partner.
He blushed and smiled in that way that absolutely melted you. Then, the music began again, this time much slower. You watched all the other couples return to the floor.
“Do you know how to waltz?” Ben asked.
You shook your head. He quickly showed you a box step, and you told him you trusted him. So, he took you out again.
The waltz was smooth, with a romantic sway that was exactly what you had envisioned for the dress. You were much closer to Ben now - chest to chest. Both of you were rosy cheeked from the previous dance, but your breath was evening out. Your heart rate on the other hand was picking up rapidly.
“Y/N, I…” Ben began, but trailed off.
You poked him insistently in the shoulder. He met your eyes and you questioned him with a slight downturn at the corners of your mouth.
The truth was, as he looked at you now, the only thing on his mind was kissing you.
“I can’t begin to tell you how much I like you,” he said. “I think...it’s becoming more than just a liking, if you know what I mean.”
You did, but you wanted to hear him say it. You furrowed your brow and looked confused.
“Y/N,” he said again, and as the music slowed to a stop, so did your feet. “I think I’m starting to…”
He was leaning in again, and this time there was no confusion about where he was headed. He was going to kiss you. Properly. And you were more than ready to accept him. To break this curse and regain your voice so that he could know truly everything about you. And you weren’t scared to tell him anymore. Because you knew that he loved you.
Your eyes began to close as you got closer to each other. You felt his breath hot on your face. His lips just barely began to touch yours. Just a little closer. A little closer and then…
“Time for the mermaid tears!” cried a young boy who came bounding between you, forcing you back a few feet.
You tried not to look annoyed because it wasn’t intentional, but the moment was gone. Ben cleared his throat and looked at you.
“Well, I suppose we can’t miss the mermaid tears,” he said.
What’s that about? You wondered.
“It’s when we all go to the beach and make a wish,” he explained. “Everyone takes a bit of sea glass, makes a wish, and throws it into the sea. The sea glass is meant to be Asenora’s tears she shed for her lost love. But we give them back to her - and you let go of whatever is weighing on you - then she’ll grant your wish. According to the legend.”
Does it have to be right now? You asked.
He chuckled. “Yeah, it’s always right at sundown.”
How quickly the day had flown! You weren’t ready for it to be over, but maybe, once you got back to the room, there would be another opportunity for him to kiss you.
With a sigh, you took his arm and headed for the shore.
All the jewelers were handing out the pieces of sea glass as each person approached. Yours was a deep blue, which reminded you of home. Ben’s was a soft green, and matched his eyes. You walked out to the sand, kicking off your shoes about halfway to the water. You let the ocean come and swallow your feet.
You decided you were letting go of your old life in the sea. Where you felt trapped by your father and had no control. Your wish was for Ben to try and kiss you again. You hurled the sea glass as far as you could. It disappeared inside a wave. Then you looked at Ben.
“Go ahead back to the inn,” he said, still holding his sea glass. “I need a moment.”
You placed a comforting hand on his arm, nodded, and began walking back. He watched you go, making sure you met up with Ari and Kay, before you were out of sight among the crowd. Then he looked back over the water.
His heart was torn. He was certain that he loved you, but he could not forget about the woman who saved his life. It clawed at him, made him feel guilty for falling so hard for you. But how could he help loving you? Even if there was someone out there he owed a debt to.
That was what he was letting go of. He was releasing himself from the burden of having to love someone for that reason. If he ever found that woman, he would see his debt repaid. But he was committing himself to you. His wish was only that you loved him in return. And that you would have a long and happy life together.
He realized that he was now alone on the beach. He reared back to throw the stone into the water, when a voice caught his attention. He turned around and saw a woman walking toward him. At first, he hoped it was you, but he knew it was not your silhouette.
“Benjamin,” the woman said.
Her voice was intoxicating. He noticed an odd, purple and gold glow coming from a shell around her neck. It hypnotized him so that he dropped his sea glass without even hearing it hit the sand.
Behati was whistling to herself as she walked near the stern of the ship. She had a great view of  the beach from her spot in the harbor, and she had seen you and Ben making your wishes together. Now, as she was making a second round, a foggy glow caught her eye. She stopped and watched.
A woman she had never seen was talking to Ben. The woman was certainly beautiful from what Behati could tell. But when the glowing fog went straight into Ben’s eyes and his body went rigid, the captain knew something was horribly wrong. The woman began to lead Ben into the sea, walking right into the waves.
“BEN!” Behati screamed, but he paid her no mind. “BEN, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!”
He continued to ignore her. Then Behati watched with dread as the prince’s head vanished beneath the inky black surface of the water. A wicked cackle echoed through the air. A laugh Behati could never forget as long as she lived.
“Sycoria!”

APPEARANCE: Danica is a juvenile female with thick, auburn hair that sweeps down to her shoulders which she wears up in a bun or ponytail and amber colored eyes. Standing at a height of 170cm, she is broad-shouldered and narrow-hipped, fairly muscled and not very well-endowed. Her fair skin is heavily freckled, as if someone generously sprinkled breadcrumbs on a plate, and the stress and small numbers of sleeping hours of the past years have painted crows feet and dark circles permanently on her eyes.
As a soldier, Danica wears the standard uniform with the badge of the Survey Corps. When off duty she dresses in a loose, boat-necked green shirt with the sleeves rolled up, black opened vest, black tights and knee-high sturdy boots.
PERSONALITY: Danica is a reserved, mature, pragmatic and intelligent girl whose caring heart and kind nature have hurt her heavily after the fall of Shiganshina.
As a child she was open and expressive, unafraid of taking risks and getting hurt. Surrounded by people she loved and who loved her in return she led an idyllic childhood. Unafraid of work, she was completely in her element when helping around her foster family's bakery or later in her apprenticeship.
From an early age she showed restraint over her anger, not wanting to hurt those around her and preferring to just back down from an argument, although she couldn't always keep a lid on her emotions. For her to get really angry took a good reason or a buildup overtime, but when it happened she would stop caring about the feelings of others and use her words to strike where it hurt most. After reducing others to tears, Danica would feel ashamed and renew her effort to temper herself. Her self-restraint was noted by her foster family who encouraged her to always be levelheaded.
Sensitive and empathetic to those around her, Danica craved a greater understanding of people and the world in general, although she never entertained thoughts of going outside the walls. She was content with her lot in life, with her work and with her family and friends, even if they weren't related by blood. Despite wondering now and then who her real parents were she never gave it much thought as in the end she felt it didn't matter.
After the fall of Shiganshina, Danica retreated into herself, becoming listless and apathetic. It didn't help that the Beckers blamed her for living, while their daughter did not and had ceased all relations with her. That the only person in her life who remained committed soon afterwards suicide when both of them were drafted among the refugees for the culling of '46 made things even worse for Danica. She felt abandoned, lonely and depressed. Her thoughts and dreams gave her no rest, when she wasn't thinking about Adele (the Becker's daughter), she was thinking about Gigi (a seamstress and friend).
The world felt old and decayed, she was constantly tired and weary and only got up every day out of bed because she could not stand the thought of wasting away. It also helped that her new employer in Trost had taken a liking to her and had started her on a crash course in medicine, to increase her chances of coming back. Not wanting to disappoint him or to be useless she persevered. A larger part of her simply didn't want to die.
The horrors of the expedition that came from both Titans and people who had nothing to lose and no restraints anymore, left a lasting mark on Danica. Unable to view humanity with kindness or concern anymore, Danica grew to have problems relating to those around her. The loss of the man who had helped her and later her partner in crime only made her sink further in her depression. Had Hannes and one of his officer not been notified of Elia's body and found her alongside him, Danica might have just remained there until she wasted away. Hannes kindness however rekindled something inside Danica who realized she still wanted to live and that she was tired of being tired, sad, weary, guilty, ashamed, lonely and always having to start again.
Her decision to join the Garrison changes after the Battle of Trost however when she begins piecing the puzzle in front of her and realizes that things are not what they seem. Wanting to learn the reasons behind the war, but more so about the Colossal and Armored Titan who had ruined her life she decides to join the Survey Corps, even if she would come to regret it.
HISTORY: Radek Orlov was a Military Police officer whose affair with Danica's mother, the youngest daughter of a noble non-Eldyian clan affiliated with the ruling government, saw him transferred to the Survey Corps when it was discovered Francine was with child. As for Francine, herself, she was forced to go into hiding until Danica was born then give her up so that the Murphy's wouldn't be affected by scandal and that her engagement to the eldest heir of another noble clan could go through.
(rowan) you say her mother, francine, is from a non-eldian clan. that isn't possible, as all the residents within paradis are eldians. even the members of the ruling government are eldians
Francine's father wasn't completely without mercy however, even if he sent Danica as far away as Shinganshina, he also arranged for his bastard granddaughter to be taken in by a foster family as well as an apprenticeship to a seamstress when she reached her tenth birthday.
Danica grew up with the Beckers, knowing nothing of this, in a cheerful, lively and loud environment. She was best friend's with the Beckers middle daughter, Adele and often time helped around the family's business, the bakery. From an early age she developed a curiosity for herbs, brought on by Beckers varied recipes that included them and when she left their household for Madam Girard's, she was very happy to receive a book on botany from them. This passion slowly turned into gardening which became her hobby, as she would from there on always keep a small pot to grow mint in it (using the leaves alongside baking soda to wash her teeth or to chew to keep her breath fresh).
At Madam Girard's, a local seamstress of some renown inside and outside Shinganshina, Danica would spend most of her days sewing alongside her teacher and the other girls in her employment. Despite the long hours of work, she grew quite close to the other girls, the two she roomed with, Yulya and Gigi, especially. Whenever given free time, she would more often than not find herself in their company or visiting the Beckers. Sometimes Yulya and Gigi would join her at the Beckers and soon Yulya and the Becker's oldest son, Gregor grew close to one another much to Danica's great joy, as she had been the one to introduce them.
(rowan) i think it should be noted that just because danica is apprenticed with the seamstress, it doesn't mean she lives with her. it just means she basically has an internship, and will treat it like a job, except she is only getting paid in knowledge/experience. if this was a farm, i could understand having to live there, otherwise i find it kind of weird.
STORY: On the day the Colossal Titan appeared, Danica and Adele were out together. The frightening sight made them lock hands. When the breach occurred, Danica was blown back by a piece of falling debris. Adele was not so lucky and Danica was left to stare in shock at the disembodied arm she was holding hands with. Her best friend being a mere smear on the floor, Danica was on the verge of going into shock when she was jostled by the panicked surge of the fleeing crowd into dropping the arm and running. To this day she cannot remember how exactly she managed to escape to the boat, but when she came to all she could do was tremble and cry.
Upon arriving in Trost she tried to find anyone she knew and eventually stumbled upon Gigi who was quite a fright, having been witness to a Titan devouring Madam and crushing Yulya underfoot. Eventually Danica managed to reunite with the Beckers who asked about Adele. Claming up, all Danica could find in her power to do was shake her head much to the family's horror. Asked to leave and not come back by a grieving mother and father, Danica went off and she and the Beckers never spoke again. Returning to Gigi's side, the two of them eventually found work, Gigi with a local tailor and Danica with a doctor thanks to her knowledge of sewing and botany.
(rowan) i can understand grief making the beckers react unfairly and out of emotion, but considering they've raised danica since she was a baby and have treated her like she was their own, i'm surprised by their reaction. it makes it seem like they never loved her in the first place. if that's the case, i think their behavior towards her should change a bit, and danica should come off as a bit more neglected. since before it seemed like they loved and cared for her.
When the culling in 846 was called, both Gigi and Danica were drafted from among the refugees. Gigi unable to cope and fearful of a terrible death, hanged herself, much to Danica's horror as she was the one to find her friend.
(rowan) while i think this is an interesting idea, during the culling, only men were selected out of the civilians to take part in it. the women and children were left alone. it doesn't state that specifically, but if you go back to look at the images about the event, you don't see any women or children. just the male civilians and the members of the survey corps.
even if that wasn't the case, however, i don't see why gigi and danica would be selected. the world needs children to grow and take place of the older generation. they also need women to keep the walls populated. so why would two young girls be sent off to die, when the government knows they could be potential future mothers? it makes more sense to weed out the old, since they're going to die anyway.
this is just my take on it though! since nothing is officially stated regarding the people they selected among the civilians, you're free to do as you like.
Dr. Owen, despite his gruff and cantankerous personality, was in his own way of great help to Danica especially concerning the upcoming expedition, emphasizing that her medical knowledge no matter how limited might just be her ticket home. As it so happens he was right and Danica was placed among the soldiers of the Survey Corps, alongside their own medics when the expedition began.
Danica would be among the few civilian survivors who returned from the culling. Changed by the horrible things she had seen and the many wounded she could not save, Danica decided she would never again step a foot outside the safety of the walls and that she would not pursue a career as a doctor. Returning to Dr. Owen to take her few belongings back, she was dismayed to find out from his neighbors that the old man had died, knifed for trying to break up a fight.
Alone and without anything to her name, Danica is forced to sleep on the unsafe streets. In the days to come, unable to find employment and going hungry she begins stealing food to survive. Soon she encounters a young boy, Elia, a thief and pickpocket, who suffers of pneumonia. Like her he is a refugee forced by circumstances into such a life and his sickness makes it even harder to find honest work.
The two of them team up to survive and grow quite close to one another, Elia going as far as to teach Danica parkour so that they can make easier escapes during their heists. This partnership does not last as Elia takes a turn for the worse and dies one night. Once more alone, Danica realizes that nothing in her life has had any stability ever since Shiganshina, that the past year had been nothing but hunger, pain and suffering. Weary and tired of this lifestyle, but not knowing what to do she remains alongside her friend's body until two Garrison officers come upon them.
Elia's body is taken away and one of the men who found her, Hannes takes Danica to a pub for a hot meal, going as far as to secure a job for her there as a washer in the kitchens. The kindness shown to her, leaves Danica in tears and she decides then and there to enroll in the military the coming year and join the Garrison on her graduation.
When the time comes she signs with the 104th Cadet Corps. The intense training as well as her own continued practice of parkour, leave Danica exhausted more often than not at the end of the day. Despite her growing skills, she does not care much about grades as she is still quite set on the Garrison and makes sure to put in enough effort to pass, but not overtake anyone. More concerned to learn how to defend herself, she focuses only on improving herself without putting effort into any exams, not caring about the instructors opinions that she could do much better. This coupled with her own reserved nature, her inability to connect to her peers or relate to their worries, paint Danica as stuck up and someone who thinks she is better than everyone else. When she eventually learns how others perceive her, she is both mortified and distressed. Until that moment she had not realized how much she had changed the past two years and as the situation is something of her own doing and she has no idea how to change, Danica remains on the outside more often than not. Eventually as team building exercises are introduced, her natural abilities as a leader shine through and her relationship with her yearmates becomes friendlier, although she is still seen by most as stuck-up.
(rowan) danica seems like she doesn't care about the people around her, and she is only focused on reaching her goals. i thought she also didn't get close to people, as a way to protect herself, since up until now everyone she was close to either left her or died.
that brings me to wondering why all of a sudden, danica cares how others perceive her. since she never took time to get close to her yearmates, i find it weird that she suddenly cares about what they think of her.
unless, her becoming "mortified and distressed' has more to do with herself, and her realizing how much she has changed. and less to do with her finding out what they think of her.
this is just an observation i made when i read her backstory and etc, so i could be wrong in the assumption. either way, i hope me pointing it out helps in some way.
Graduating outside the top ten, Danica is stationed alongside the other cadets in Trost. Despite having lukewarm relations with most of her yearmates, she is buoyed with happiness, knowing that she would join the Garrison soon. This is remarked by the rest of her teammates: Vera Fermi, Leon Mikaelsson, Theo Durand, Kathrin Beckert and Felix Grey. Assigned to patrol the six of them, get to know one another a bit better but the appearance of the Colossal Titan puts a quick stop to Danica's joy and her first honest attempt in years to make friends. Her reaction isn't missed by the rest of her squad, who despite their shock and horror have an easier time, never having seen titans before and still somewhat optimistic as to their own chances. They manage to get Danica moving to HQ where they receive their orders. Despite her shaking, Danica is aware enough to order Theo Durand to requisition additional gas canisters and blades to carry as the possibility of running out is quite high. She assigns him and Felix Grey to divide the burden among themselves, placing the remaining Vera Fermi, Leon Mikaelsson and Kathrin Beckert as the scouting/vanguard of their squad, with the two logicians and herself as a medic behind.
Surprised but seeing the merit of her idea, they prepare and head to their assigned position only to find that the Titans had advanced. Realizing that the first line of defense had fallen, Danica has an outburst of nerves, cursing everything in sight. Devising a plan to separate and pick them off one by one, using her and the logicians to lure them in while the three assigned to the vanguard take them out works for a while. But as titans fall, her squad mates become overconfident and bite more than they can chew. Vera is caught and Leon and Kathrin jump to her rescue. They are promptly killed by titans and Felix and Theo try to make a break for it, overcome by fear. Their mistake costs them their lives but allows Danica to use their death to make her escape. She doesn't stop until she finds more of the 104th cadets and as they hopelessly watch the advancing enemy, Danica is filled with dread. Unable to stop wondering how much time they have until the Armored Titan appears, Mikasa's sudden arrival and lousy speech emboldens her and she joins the rest of her yearmates in making a break for HQ to resupply. (Things go more or less as they did in canon at HQ)
The Rogue Titan's leaves Danica without words, more so after Eren emergence.
Keeping a close eye for the appearance of the Armored Titan as they flee for the safety of Wall Rose, Danica makes a few realizations:
The Armored Titan was nowhere in sight.
The Colossal had appeared as suddenly as it did in Shiganshina and just as suddenly dissipated, much like the Armored.
Eren's titan form was already discomposing when he emerged.
(rowan) i thought danica didn't remember much after the fall of shinganshina? i thought she just remembered her friend dying, and then somehow making it to one of the boats and arriving at trost?
that being said, i find it weird just remembers something like the armored titan appearing, nonetheless disappearing. especially considering the chaos that was taking place. it'd be hard to keep track of something like that.
Although her mind is in a jumble and she hasn't yet come across what exactly is wrong with this picture, she asks Mikasa and Armin to allow her to stand with them when defending Eren. Despite their skepticism about her intentions and Mikasa's threat that she would die if she were to make a move for Eren, she is allowed to defend him to the panicked Garrison. Once Commander Pixis arrives on the scene and agrees to Armin's plan, the three ask Danica why exactly she stayed with them. The only thing Danica thinks to say is that "The Armored Titan hasn't appeared." This confuses them, until Armin straightens all of a sudden as of just now noticing the same thing. Both Armin and Danica come to realize that the Armored Titan might not appear at all, that those two titans had already found what they wanted.
(rowan) very confused as to why danica would want to put her life on the line for people she doesn't know. i'm surprised she even knew their names lol but it just seems very random for her to want to suddenly stand in defense of eren. what is she gaining? what is the point to it?
also, her assumptions revolving around the titans are weird. at this point, no one knows anything about the titans other than the fact they are out to end humanity without rhyme or reason. thinking of the armored titan and colossal titan as things with "motives" or "reasons" is not fitting for the current timeline, where they don't know anything. so her thinking that the two titans "have already found what they wanted" is weird, as titan's don't have thoughts. and as far as they know, the colossal and armored are just that: titans.
another thing i don't think fits, is danica putting the armored and colossal titans together as a pair. as in, if one appears, then the other one isn't far behind. titans don't work in teams or anything, so to expect that from them doesn't add up. even if they had showed together during the fall of shiganshina, that was just one instance. there isn't much of a pattern to turn it into something predicable.
Danica is left frothing at the mouth, her mind working overdrive as she suspects the Colossal and Armored might both be like Eren, shifters, and that the people who died five years ago were merely collateral, instead of their main objective.
(rowan) again, this is something no one knows about yet. in the current state the word "titan shifters" hasn't even been discovered. they all think eren is an actual titan who has adapted to fit in with the humans to kill them all. very far fetched, but again, they don't know much about titans except that they kill humans. eren having been a titan is enough to confuse and scare them.
the fact that the intelligent characters such as armin, hange, and erwin, took a bit to discover there were others like eren says enough about how unbelievable the theory is. according to these people, there is no world outside the walls. how could they even imagine something like titan shifters existing?
so, unfortunately, i don't think it'd be fitting to have your character draw that conclusion. no matter how smart they are, i doubt they're smarter than the aforementioned characters. if anything, danica needs more evidence before jumping to such a conclusion.
Burning with anger, Danica is quick to interrogate Eren about his transformation and how it came about to see if Armin's plan had a chance. As he tells what he remembers, Danica realizes that Eren's intent, his desire to kill the titans might have been a trigger and advises him to think only "I will pick the boulder and seal the breach" and only that. She is quick to point out that if he loses control of this power, even if he's never before realized he had it, things could take a turn for the worse not only for himself but Mikasa and Armin too. Eren agrees readily, but can't stop asking why she is so fired up. Danica tells them that she too comes from Shiganshina and that she too has lost everyone, to the trio's surprise as Danica has never even hinted at her past before. With a better understanding of one another, they part ways. The mission is a success from the start as Eren takes Danica's words to heart as well as minimal loss of life on the part of Eren's protectors. Not long after Eren and the rest of his team's triumphant return, the Survey Corps arrive. As the battle comes to a close and the Garrison and Survey Corps join forces in cleaning the town of Titans, Danica becomes aware that her suspicions were right and that there's more going on than what can be seen at first glance. Although she cannot point to why exactly the two titans waited so long to mount another attack, especially as the Armored could have just made a run for Wall Rose and no one would have been able to stop him, Danica realizes that she wants answers. Knowing that if she joins the Garisson she might not ever find out why they attacked, why so many had to die (why did she have to suffer so much), she tears up and laughs bitterly knowing that her only option is the Survey Corps if she plans to go ahead with finding answers. Even as she shakes with fear, a much bigger part of her burns for knowledge.
(The rest would be spoilers when I get to writing as it steadily turns AU, since Danica manages to save some people (Mike [by agreeing to tell Zeke everything about the VME in exchange for their lives], Gelger, Nanaba [by being there on orders to inform them about the Beast Titan, and being able to help, also by realizing that Henning and Lynne's blades and canisters might still be of use after Gelger gets injured and she and Nanaba run out]) and even befriend them. Her past also comes under scrutiny in the Uprising Arc and that is when she learns about her parents.)
(rowan) i highly doubt zeke will spare mike if danica tells him about the 3dmg. if anything, i could see him killing them both/leaving them for dead right after getting the information. the only way to spare mike, is to not let zeke get a hold of him at all lol
as for her past, i have to ask, will it really change anything? if she discovers her birthright, what will it mean to her? you said her family is a noble one, but why are they so important? what is it exactly that they do? i feel like, to have such a background, it will have to mean and result in something important. otherwise, it would have just been better to make her a random orphan in shiganshina, rather than a bastard noble child.
STATS Combat: 7/10 Initiative: 7/10 Wits: 9/10 Teamwork: 7/10 Agility: 10/10
(rowan) i think some of the stats are bit high considering the information i was given. i would make initiative, a six, considering so far i've seen her having to receive a "push" before she does anything.
teamwork, is also a little high, considering her standoffish attitude. i would make it a six.
A/N: I'm sorry for giving you more work, but I've had this idea stuck inside my head for a while now and I really need some advice if the OC is worth actually writing in the story. I've tried to give her constant character development and a believable reason for joining the Survey Corps and I don't know how much of my ideas come across since English isn't my first language and there might be some spelling mistakes. I've also added the characters I would like to save and possible explanations about how she goes about them, but I'm a bit unsure if Mike's is even possible, because while Zeke does seem practical, he's also kinda ruthless.
(rowan) no problem at all! thank you for submitting this to us, and i hope i was at least a little bit of help.
as always, i like to remind everyone that you don't have to listen to my critiques, but they are honest thoughts and observations i made. and i also say them with your best interests in mind! :)

I remember tears streaming down your face when I said “I'll never let you go” When all those shadows almost killed your light I remember you said don't leave me here alone But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight...
TLDR; Martin Ambrosius, District 2, Victor of the 293rd Hunger Games recalls his own time spent in the arena and confronts the ghosts of those he betrayed.
TW: Poison, Bombs, Decapitation, Murder, Death
The quarters for mentors was too similar to the tributes’ in Martin’s opinion. As he laid in his bed for the first night at the training facility after the train ride with his tributes, he couldn’t help but recall his first night after his Reaping. It had been cold, but not like a snowy day, just cool. His home had been comfortable enough in District 2 he supposed, but everything in the Capitol was next level.
Even the cold.
He hadn’t been able to sleep in that bed the whole time they had been there. Instead he’d taken the small couch in the space. The shape of the cushions reminding him of the slight flaws in his mattress back home. It had kept most of his nightmares at bay at least, even if his back ached in the morning from the position he’d been in for too many hours.
Then had come the training itself.
When showing his tributes the training facility and tools, he’d had flashbacks to his own time frantically spent trying to train in things that his mind would never fully capture. Sure, he’d picked up a thing or two since then (especially within the arena) but there was something so unnatural and clunky about him wielding an axe or trying to create a bomb. No, things like that were best left to those who specialized in the craft.
Martin had used any time that had not been spent honing crafts he’d never grasp forming alliances.
The first had been Miranda, a studious looking girl from District 3. Miranda had been good with traps and electricals. She had insisted to Martin that there was little difference between organizing a circuit board and creating a good trap. He hadn’t seen the connection but her skills were undeniable. She was thirteen. Martin remembered the cute way her nose scrunched up when she concentrated on something.
Then had come Kaydence, a boisterous kid from District 5. He was strong from working in the fields and large to boot. Kaydence had shown Martin how to use a hammer. There was this optimism that had never gone away. He was fourteen. Martin remembered the way how, when Kaydence had laughed, all of his fears tended to melt away even on the worst of his days in the arena.
Rounding out Martin’s allies came Trey, a fellow District 2 member that Martin remembered from the academy. Trey was no Career, but he had spent an inordinate amount of time on agility courses and with smaller long-range weaponry because the ability to juggle daggers while jumping through hoops had amused him greatly. He was seventeen. Martin remembered the handshake he and Trey had made up while huddled together under their camp while they waited for the acid rain the Gamemakers had sent to stop.
Just close your eyes, the sun is going down You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound...
When Martin had gotten into the arena his first instinct had been to run in the opposite direction of the Cornucopia. This was, however, undercut by Kaydence’s insistence on getting himself a hammer that was shimmering in the very center of the chaos. Not wanting to abandon his allies, he’d rushed in at Kaydence’s heels and helped to distract as many of the District 1 Careers as possible to get their whole pack through the Cornucopia.
Sorting through their loot they found: Martin managed to snag a backpack that would prove to be full of medical supplies, Miranda had grabbed herself some wire and a crossbow, Kaydence got his hammer and a fishing net, and Trey grabbed a trident that none of them knew how to use. All in all they had decided it had actually been worth it once Martin had used their new supplies to patch up a few injuries they’d sustained in the area.
The first few days passed pretty uneventfully. The terrain felt confusing going from forest to desert and back again. They mainly kept to themselves, sharing stories from back home and sharing what the first thing they’d do if they were the one to make it home.
Miranda wanted to start her own academy in District 3; something that would give future tributes more of an access to an electrical side of things despite that being District 2′s whole deal. Martin had told her that she was onto something and hoped that, should she make it there, that they at least named the building after her or something.
Kaydence just wanted to hug his mother again. He didn’t care about the glory, though he hoped that District 5 would at least get enough food and money to make the pain he went through worth it. Martin had shared how much he missed Mim in return and Kaydence had pulled the older tribute in for a hug that Martin couldn’t refuse. Being in the arena made everyone lonely.
Trey was the outlier. Despite not having the skills of a Career he’d smirked at the question, snorting contemptuously at Kaydence’s soft answer. Money and power and fame drove Trey to reach for the finish line. His grandmother had been a Victor and, while his parents had never gone through the Games, Trey was determined to be just as big of a name as she had been. Martin had assured Trey that everyone was just as valid as the other for their reasonings but kept quiet about the rainclouds behind his neighbor’s eyes.
Don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire The war outside our door keeps raging on Hold onto this lullaby even when the music’s gone, gone...
Food was scarce in the arena.
The few animals they had come across being squirrels and lizards which were high in protein if you could get enough for four people but, most of the time, catching food could only feed one or two of their members. This proved to be to Martin’s benefit when they re-entered the forest area and found a big bushel of berries. There was one that Martin recognized as safe to eat and they’d filled an entire pocket of his backpack to the brim with them to carry with them along their journey.
What the others didn’t see was the nearly identical bushel beside that one of poisonous berries that Martin snagged and stuffed into a separate pocket for later.
One by one, they eventually ran into the other packs in the arena and had to fight their way through the landscape so they could hope to get back to their families, back to their lives.
Three cannons fired when Miranda set off a bomb she’d managed to make with her skills and a sponsor gift she’d received. She managed to kill someone from District 1, District 6, and District 5 in that explosion. Miranda insisted that she was fine when they checked on her but Martin remembered the way she’d asked him to hold her when the others were asleep.
A single cannon fired thanks to Kaydence when a scrawny looking girl from District 4 tried to steal from their camp and was caught by the largest member of their party. She had barely even known she’d been caught before Kaydence sliced her head off. They tried not to look at Kaydence when they saw the face of that tribute in the sky that night but Martin remembered hearing his sobs while keeping watch for them.
A whopping four cannons fired for Trey’s use of Miranda’s crossbow. They’d been ambushed at an oasis in the middle of the desert, too delirious from dehydration to look for the attack awaiting them at the shore. Trey had saved their lives singlehandedly, having hung back from his allies to keep watch over them due to a “bad feeling” he’d had in his gut. Martin remembered how everyone had treated Trey like a hero in the moment but when it came time to acknowledging the fallen that night Trey was the quietest of all staring into those portraits.
Just close your eyes, the sun is going down You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound...
Each day that passed brought Martin and his allies closer to the finish line. It didn’t feel real, not really, most days. They kept to themselves as much as they could, letting the other tributes kill each other off for the most part. Martin knew the people he was working with weren’t killers at heart, not really. He, himself, had yet to even get a kill thus far in the Game, not that he was complaining about the fact.
The problem came when the realization dawned upon Martin that only seven remained in the game and four of them were sitting together at his camp. He almost couldn’t process the knowledge, couldn’t anticipate what that would feel like. If Martin were honest, he’d never expected for them to get this far. He had imagined a million ways for him to go out but being part of the final seven? It felt like a dream.
So, this knowledge fresh in his mind, Martin began to prepare the supper for his camp in silence. Everyone else was sharing stories and inside jokes that they had created all together here in the arena. His heart sank as his hands worked against his heart’s desire to keep them all safe.
Miranda was handed her plate first as she always was. They had joked in the beginning about ladies first but really she was the youngest so it only felt fair to make sure she got a fair portion. Martin remembered the way he didn’t ruffle her hair the way he usually did as he passed her by and she pouted at him but made no further comment.
Kaydence was next, a big guy like him he always joked that he deserved double the portion of tiny Miranda but never actually complained about his share as the group always at least made it fair and everyone took turns missing a meal if they were running extremely low on sustenance. Martin remembered Kaydence calling him “Chef” sarcastically as he stared down at his plate of only berries.
Trey was the last of Martin’s allies to be given his plate at every meal that included every member of their group. Trey was usually fiddling with something which resulted in his hands being busy and Martin was never quite in the mood for getting accidentally stabbed by Trey dropping whatever fidget toy he’d found for the day. Martin remembered Trey taking this meal in silence and wished he had asked what had been on Trey’s mind at the time.
Just close your eyes, you'll be alright Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound...
One by one his allies began to realize what had happened to them as they grew steadily more ill from the dinner Martin had given them. The side effects of the poison they’d consumed wouldn’t be too painful, he’d been sure that they wouldn’t suffer for too long. He couldn’t even look them in the eyes as they accused him of his crimes.
Martin wouldn’t have been able to see them anyway, the tears overflowing as his allies’, his friends’ lives came to their bitter end.
Miranda was the first to go, having been the smallest and the first to have eaten. She had asked him why he did this to them when they trusted him. Martin had no answer and couldn’t watch her face as she had passed on. He made sure to close her eyes and lay her down gently afterwards, though, choking out apologies between his sobs. She didn’t deserve this fate, she was just a kid!
Kaydence, despite his size, followed suit. For the first time since Martin had met Kaydence he heard the District 5 tribute swear. Not at Martin but at himself for allowing his guard to go down so easily. This felt worse than if Kaydence would have yelled at him, at least Martin would have deserved that. When Kaydence passed on he offered the fallen tribute the same courtesy he had offered Miranda. Kaydence had been a good person and Martin would carry that guilt for the rest of his life.
Trey was the last to fall and Martin would later be told by Trey’s mother that her son was much too stubborn to let Martin see his weakness as he passed on. What she didn’t know was that Trey had shown it, silently, by being the only one to capture Martin’s eye contact and looking terrified by his fate. Sure, Trey had said nothing aloud but his silence spoke volumes that echoed in his mind still.
Martin spent the rest of the Game hiding in their camp until the last tribute sought him out. A bloodthirsty boy from District 4. Martin had wasted no time with this fight, having expected this eventually, and shot him dead in the heart with Miranda’s crossbow.
With that it was over and Martin was taken home. What barely anyone realized was Martin died in that arena alongside all of his friends.
