Excerpt from this story from the Daily Maverick:
Five mature elephant bulls have been shot by trophy hunters in Tanzania in the past eight months, at least two of which are said to have been “super-tuskers”. An unofficial agreement between Kenya and Tanzania had protected these elephants for 30 years. A new Avaaz petition rightly calls on the Tanzanian government to end the madness.
The Amboseli elephants have been studied extensively for nearly five decades now. Much of what we know about elephants is literally thanks to this set of remarkable elephant families.
The 30-year reprieve (and the fact that Kenya long ago banned trophy hunting) allowed the Amboseli population to thrive and produce some of the world’s most magnificent bull elephants despite the general population decimation trends across the continent. These trends only slowed after the US and China imposed domestic ivory trade bans in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
As renowned Amboseli elephant researcher Cynthia Moss told Africa Geographic, “shooting an Amboseli bull is about as sporting as shooting your neighbour’s poodle.”
It is unconscionably cruel to shoot highly habituated elephants for “sport”. As Moss, who is one of the leading Amboseli scientists, rightly points out, it is hardly “fair chase” or “ethical” to shoot an Amboseli bull with a high-calibre rifle.
Given how few big tuskers are left in the world (some estimates suggest fewer than 50), the agreement to leave the Amboseli population alone couldn’t be more important, not only for genetic heritage but for the sake of any future hope of human-elephant coexistence. Elephants are increasingly being born with smaller (or no) tusks in response to the rapacious history of poaching and trophy hunting for ivory over the past 200 years. Tuskless elephants have lost their essential “elephantness”.
In response to the recent killing, some of the world’s foremost elephant scientists penned a letter to Science, a leading academic journal, calling for authorities to end the trophy hunting of big-tusked elephants in northern Tanzania.

I reckon a lot of Yanks really overstate the actual material importance of 9/11 and it's fallout. At most you could say that it helped to accelerate trends that had been progressing for decades (like the creation of a surveillance state or the privatization of military functions) or intensified- at least in terms of open expression- features of the nation that had been present for most of its existence (like Jingoism and xenophobia). It's not as though the US became any more Imperialistic even if we focus only on West Asia and North Africa. They'd been couping and bombing the region for the entire Cold War and showed no signs of stopping in the 90s. After the US ambassador April Glaspie helped to instigate the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait President Bush used it as a pretense to unleash a devestating war on Iraq and (while maintaining crippling sanctions) much of the US military-political establishment was salivating at the idea of a round two. Like hell before they figured out the culprits behind the 9/11 attacks many officials were trying to pin it on Saddam Hussein-they were pretty much planning the Iraq war before the Afghanistan one.
Al Qaeda had been on the US's radar since their 1998 embassy bombings in Kenya-later that year President Clinton had used the false pretence of an Al Qaeda nerve gas manufacturing operation to blow up a Sudanese medicine factory to distract from a domestic political scandal. Like the biggest thing that 9/11 changed was the US's own self perception as the general public was forced to reckon with the impacts of their nations imperialism and the hatred this engendered in the rest of the world, but this only really led to a doubling down of pre-existing attitudes of exceptionalism and superiority and the righteous application of brutality to any that resisted.
But even as domestic attitudes changes it's not as though foreign policy did all that much. The USA had been using torture as a tactic for a long time (just look at Operation Condor or the Phoneix Program) they just now felt a lot less shame in admitting it. And it's not as if the post 9/11 waves of paranoia and hatred these attacks generated were without precedent; in many ways Islamic Terrorists became a convenient replacement for Communists or (looking back even further) "Indians" in the USamerican psyche. Hell it's not as though pre 9/11 attitudes towards the Islamic world were all that positive either (at most you could say the hatred was a lot less active and intense).
I'll admit that I'm looking at this from a much more detached perspective than many others-I'm not a Yank and I'm too young to remember the attacks when they happened. So I'm sure for USamericans the attacks and the social changes they engendered felt like the most shocking things imaginable. But in the grand scheme of things they didn't matter all that much; at most they just pushed the US further along a path they had been on for a long time and showed no signs of straying from. Even if you went back in time and personally stopped the hijackings I doubt the world of today would look all that different. Certainly wouldn't feel any different for the billions of people suffering under the USamerican imperial yoke just as they had been before

In a dramatic move, Kenyan President William Ruto has today, 11 July, yielded to one of the critical demands of mainly youthful protesters by dismissing all cabinet secretaries and the attorney general, leaving behind the deputy president and the prime cabinet secretary. Generation Z, Kenya’s now politically awakened generation who entered adulthood in recent years to find few jobs and a high cost of living, cemented its place in national politics after three weeks of nationwide demonstrations against tax hikes Ruto said would shore up revenues to pay off $80 billion in domestic and international debt. Despite the government removing some of the most controversial International Monetary Fund-backed tax hikes, Kenyans demanded Ruto scrap the proposed 2024 finance bill and called on him to resign.

David Zipper at Vox:
Despite a recent slowdown in US sales, global forecasts for electric vehicles remain bullish. Countries across North America, Europe, and Asia are expanding charger networks and offering EV subsidies; global EV sales are projected to nearly triple by 2030, reaching 40 million vehicles annually. The incipient wave of EV purchases raises a question: What will happen to the millions of gas-powered cars whose owners no longer want them? The likely answer: Rather than scrapping used gas vehicles or selling them domestically, rich nations will dispatch them to developing countries where limited incomes and low levels of car ownership have created eager buyers for even older, substandard models.
An influx of used gas cars would be a welcome development for those in the Global South who aspire to automobile ownership, a luxury that many in affluent countries take for granted. But it would undermine efforts to mitigate climate change, since shifting gas guzzlers from one country to another doesn’t lower global emissions. For developing countries themselves, a sharp increase in car ownership could amplify calls to build auto-reliant infrastructure, making it harder to construct the dense neighborhoods and transit networks that can foster more sustainable growth. And since these imported used cars would be fueled by gasoline, air quality would further decline in cities that are already choked with smog. The world is in an era of polycrisis, facing concurrent challenges including climate change, toxic air, and extreme inequality. Difficult trade-offs are often inevitable. Such is the case with the thorny issue of what to do with the millions of gas cars that the rich world will discard as its fleets are electrified. Electrification is a necessary goal. And it’s natural for people in the developing world to desire the same luxuries that characterize middle-class comfort in wealthier countries. The question is how to manage a transition with enormous stakes that has largely been ignored. The experts who do pay attention are growing alarmed.
[...]
How used cars move from rich nations to poor ones
Although it generates few headlines, a massive industry transports used cars across borders every day, with exporters collecting lower-quality models from dealers and wholesale auctions. Ayetor noted that colonial legacies are reflected in the trade flows: the UK, with its car cabins designed for drivers who keep to the left, tends to ship to former colonies like Kenya and Tanzania that still follow the same rules.
According to a report issued in June by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), some 3.1 million used cars were exported in 2022, up from 2.4 million in 2015. Most come from Japan, Europe, and the United States. (In the US, around 7 percent of all cars no longer in use are sent abroad. The rest end up in junkyards where their parts and materiel are sold off.) About one in three exported used vehicles is destined for Africa, followed by Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Imported models often dominate local auto sales, since international carmakers send few new vehicles to the Global South and rarely establish production facilities there. (In sub-Saharan Africa, only South Africa has local factories.) The developing world’s demand for cars is robust, in large part because comparatively few people own one. According to one 2020 estimate, the US had 860 cars for every 1,000 residents, while South Africa had 176, Morocco 112, and Nigeria just 56. Meanwhile, growing populations provide a steady supply of new potential customers. Africa is home to all of the world’s 20 fastest-growing countries, with Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger, and Uganda expanding their populations by at least 3 percent per year. (For comparison, the US population is growing at a 0.67 percent rate).
[...]
The world needs a plan to adapt
The risks of aged, polluting cars sent abroad will not be borne by the Global South alone. Climate change is a planetary phenomenon; driving a gas guzzler produces the same amount of emissions in Lusaka as it would in London or Los Angeles. Reducing greenhouse gasses requires reducing total vehicle emissions, not just shifting their location. In an ideal world, electrification would enable the rich world to scrap its most decrepit gas cars. Instead, wealthy nations are likely to ship them to poorer countries, which will be left to figure out what to do when even the most MacGyver-like mechanics cannot keep them running. “All of your worst vehicles end up here,” Ayetor said. “When we want to get rid of the vehicle, what do we do?” No wealthy nations currently screen exported vehicles to weed out those that flunk basic quality tests, Kopf said. But that may soon change. The European Union is now considering new regulations that would prohibit exporting “end of life” vehicles, requiring that cars shipped abroad obtain a certificate confirming their roadworthiness. Its adoption would be a “game-changer,” according to UNEP’s Akumu. (She and Kopf said they know of no comparable proposals under consideration in North America.)
With the increase of electric vehicles in the developed countries, used gas-fueled cars are headed to a developing country (aka the Global South) at increasing rates.

For nearly four years, Republicans have delved into the darkest corners of Hunter Biden’s life, seeking to tie his troubles to his father, President Biden. But as the younger Biden stands trial in Delaware on gun charges, the case’s glaring political contradictions have rendered the G.O.P. largely mute, from former President Donald J. Trump on down.
It stands to reason: The baseless claim that the Biden Justice Department is running a political persecution of Mr. Trump is somewhat undermined by the department’s prosecution of the president’s son. It is also hard to make much of allegations that Hunter Biden lied about his drug use to purchase a handgun when your party is sponsoring legislation to ease gun-purchasing restrictions for veterans struggling with mental illness, not to mention the case before the Supreme Court that could allow domestic abusers to buy firearms.
So beyond the professional provocateurs in Washington and the right-wing media, Republicans have decided to say as little as possible.
[...]
On Tuesday, when the House Judiciary Committee’s Republican majority convened a hearing on how the “D.O.J. has become politicized and weaponized under the leadership of Attorney General Merrick Garland,” practically the only mentions of Hunter Biden came from Democrats, such as Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee, who asked Mr. Garland if his department had indicted Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas. The answer was yes.
“So you’ve prosecuted Democrats, and as we speak, Hunter Biden, the son of the president, is under trial in Delaware,” Mr. Cohen said, adding for good measure that the department had declined to indict a Republican member of the committee, Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, after investigating him for sex trafficking.
“Mr. Gaetz is living evidence that you have not weaponized the Justice Department,” Mr. Cohen said. (Mr. Gaetz was not in the room at the time.)
Perhaps the only mention of the president’s son by a Republican at the lengthy hearing came from Representative Ben Cline of Virginia, who asked whether Mr. Garland had spoken to Hunter Biden at a state dinner for Kenya’s president last month.
“I have never spoken to Hunter Biden in my life,” Mr. Garland responded.
Then there is the charge that Hunter Biden faces — lying about drug use on a federal background check to purchase a gun — and its clash with the gun rights absolutism in the G.O.P. On Tuesday night, the House narrowly passed a measure that would remove military veterans who had been reported to the F.B.I. for mental health concerns from the national gun background check system.
“I’m encouraged to see Congress refusing to turn a blind eye to the 260,000 veterans who have been wrongfully submitted to the F.B.I.’s corrupt system,” declared Representative Eli Crane, Republican of Arizona and the amendment’s sponsor.
But that “corrupt system” is the same one that Hunter Biden is accused of subverting on federal forms as he sought to purchase a gun.
Gun rights organizations have tied themselves in knots over the case, trying to reconcile their political efforts to defeat President Biden with their attacks on the instant check system.
“Gun Owners of America believes that the gun control Hunter Biden violated is unconstitutional and Forms 4473 shouldn’t even exist,” said Erich Pratt, the group’s senior vice president. “However, so long as these infringements remain on the books, Hunter Biden deserves no special treatment from the D.O.J.”
Andrew Arulanandam, a spokesman for the National Rifle Association, said, “The N.R.A. is a determined advocate for Second Amendment rights for every law-abiding American, but we draw the line with criminal behavior.”
Democrats have had no problem pointing out the contradictions.
Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, which has spent nearly two years investigating Hunter Biden, was almost sympathetic. The prosecutor in the case is an appointee of the Trump Justice Department, he noted. The judge was also nominated by Mr. Trump.
“The very existence of the Hunter Biden prosecution and trial debunk pretty much everything they’ve been saying about the Trump prosecution and trial,” he said.
And, Mr. Raskin added, “if anybody else in America was charged with lying on a federal form to get a handgun, the entire Republican apparatus would be mobilized to charge that his Second Amendment rights were being violated.”
[...]
Still, campaign strategists from both parties said this week that their candidates should leave the Hunter Biden case alone. Republicans said they were watching the courtroom in Delaware to see if the defendant’s father came up. Otherwise, they said, candidates should stick to the issues the party is winning on: the economy and the border.
The Trump campaign held a call with the news media on Tuesday to castigate President Biden’s executive order shutting the border to amnesty seekers. The former president released a slew of videos on subjects including a promise that a Wall Street Journal reporter imprisoned in Russia would be released if he were elected and an embrace of mail-in ballots. Neither Hunter Biden nor any other member of the “Biden crime family” came up.
Democrats have also been eager to focus on the issues that voters care about — and Hunter Biden is not one of them.
House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana on Tuesday at a CNBC forum was pressed on his assertion that the Manhattan court where Mr. Trump was convicted had been a “banana republic trial.” If so, he was asked, was the unfurling Hunter Biden case also a banana republic trial?
“Haven’t been able to watch any of that yet,” Mr. Johnson shrugged. “We’ll see. I hope not.”

Cost of a 5-Day Kenya Safari
Travel Company: DAV Safaris
Website: www.davsafaris.com
Email:[email protected]
Tel: +256757795781 or +256701412430
Cost of a 5-Day Kenya Safari, when planning a 5-day Kenya safari, one of the most crucial factors to consider is the cost. The price of your safari can vary significantly based on several elements, including the type of accommodation, transportation, and the specific parks and reserves included in your itinerary. Typically, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000 per person for a mid-range to luxury safari experience. This price generally includes accommodation, meals, park fees, and guided tours, but may exclude international flights, travel insurance, and personal expenses.
Kenya is renowned for its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes, making it a prime destination for safari enthusiasts. The primary parks and reserves featured in a 5-day safari often include the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Lake Nakuru. Each of these locations offers unique experiences and opportunities to witness the Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros—in their natural habitats. The cost will vary depending on the park's entrance fees, which can range from $50 to $100 per day for adults, as well as the time of year you choose to visit. Peak seasons, particularly during the Great Migration from July to October, tend to have higher prices due to increased demand.
Accommodation is another significant factor impacting the overall cost of your Kenya safari. Options range from budget camping sites to luxury lodges and tented camps. Budget accommodations can start from around $50 per night, while mid-range lodges typically range from $150 to $300. For those looking for a more upscale experience, luxury lodges can cost upwards of $500 per night. Additionally, many lodges offer all-inclusive packages that cover meals and safari activities, potentially providing better value for money. The choice of accommodation not only affects your budget but also your overall safari experience, as different lodges offer varying levels of comfort and access to wildlife.
Transportation plays a vital role in the safari experience, and the method you choose can influence your budget. Many safaris utilize 4x4 vehicles for game drives, which are essential for navigating the rough terrain of national parks. The cost of hiring a vehicle with a driver can range from $100 to $200 per day, depending on the vehicle type and the distance traveled. Alternatively, some travelers opt for domestic flights between parks to save time, which can add a significant cost to the overall trip. However, flying can be a convenient way to maximize your wildlife viewing while minimizing travel time. Ultimately, the total cost of a 5-day Kenya safari will depend on the combination of your chosen accommodations, activities, and transportation methods.
For those considering a memorable adventure, booking with DAV Safaris can enhance your experience. DAV Safaris specializes in creating tailored safari itineraries that cater to your specific preferences and budget. Their knowledgeable guides ensure that you have an enriching experience in Kenya's breathtaking landscapes, while also providing insights into the diverse wildlife. By choosing DAV Safaris, you can explore the beauty of Kenya with ease and confidence, knowing that your safari is in the hands of experienced professionals dedicated to making your trip unforgettable.

Surrogacy in Kenya: A Comprehensive Guide
Surrogacy in Kenya has emerged as a viable option for couples and individuals seeking to build their families through assisted reproductive technology. Kenya offers a combination of affordability, high-quality medical care, and a supportive legal environment, making it an attractive destination for surrogacy.
Legal Framework
Kenya’s legal environment is favorable for surrogacy, particularly for international couples. Unlike many countries, Kenya does not have restrictive surrogacy laws, allowing both domestic and international intended parents to pursue surrogacy arrangements. The process is often more streamlined, with fewer bureaucratic hurdles, making it easier for intended parents to complete their surrogacy journey.
Cost-Effective Option
One of the key advantages of choosing surrogacy in Kenya is the cost. Compared to other countries, the expenses associated with surrogacy in Kenya are significantly lower. This affordability extends to all aspects of the surrogacy process, including medical procedures, surrogate compensation, and legal fees. For many intended parents, this makes surrogacy in Kenya a financially accessible option without compromising on the quality of care.
Quality of Medical Services
Kenya boasts a number of reputable fertility clinics that offer world-class medical services. These clinics are equipped with modern facilities and staffed by experienced fertility specialists, ensuring that both the surrogate and the intended parents receive the highest standard of care. The country’s medical professionals are well-trained and adhere to international best practices, providing a safe and supportive environment for surrogacy.
Surrogate Availability and Support
Finding a surrogate in Kenya is relatively straightforward, thanks to the availability of willing and healthy surrogates. Surrogates in Kenya often undergo thorough medical and psychological screening to ensure they are fit for the surrogacy process. Additionally, there are support systems in place to ensure that surrogates are well cared for throughout their pregnancy, contributing to a positive experience for all parties involved.
Cultural Considerations
While Kenya is a welcoming destination for surrogacy, it is important for intended parents to be aware of the cultural context. Kenyan society is generally open and accepting of surrogacy, but as with any cross-cultural engagement, sensitivity and respect for local customs are essential. Intended parents should work closely with their surrogacy agency and legal advisors to navigate any cultural nuances effectively.

How Coding Empowers Girls to Solve Real-World Problems
In a small village in Kenya, a group of teenage girls came together with a mission: to tackle the issue of clean water scarcity in their community. With no prior experience in technology, they decided to learn coding through a local program. These young innovators developed a mobile app that helps identify safe water sources in their area. Their story is not just inspiring; it’s a powerful example of how coding empowers girls to solve real-world problems.
Coding: A Tool for Change
Coding is more than just a technical skill; it’s a tool for empowerment. For girls, especially those in underrepresented communities, learning to code opens new opportunities to address issues that matter to them. Whether it’s developing apps that promote environmental sustainability or creating platforms that improve access to education, coding allows girls to turn their ideas into impactful solutions.
Initiatives like Technovation Girls and Girls Who Code have been instrumental in providing young girls with the resources and support they need to explore coding. These programs teach girls not just how to code, but how to apply those skills to create solutions for real-world challenges. For instance, in 2022, a team of girls from Moldova developed an app called SafeSpace, designed to help survivors of domestic violence connect with support services. This app is now being used by thousands of women across Eastern Europe, illustrating the profound impact that coding can have when placed in the hands of young, motivated girls.
Fostering Problem-Solving Skills
Coding encourages a problem-solving mindset, which is crucial in today’s fast-changing world. When girls learn to code, they’re not just learning how to write software; they’re learning how to approach challenges logically and creatively. This mindset is invaluable, enabling them to tackle complex problems in innovative ways.
For example, in 2021, a group of middle school girls in the United States created a coding project aimed at reducing food waste in their school cafeteria. Using basic coding skills, they developed a system that tracks food consumption and predicts waste, which led to a significant reduction in the amount of food discarded daily. Their project demonstrates how coding empowers girls to address tangible problems in their own communities.
The Ripple Effect of Empowering Girls
When girls are empowered to solve problems through coding, the impact extends far beyond their immediate projects. It creates a ripple effect, inspiring other girls to pursue coding and explore how they can make a difference. This is especially important in fields like technology, where female representation has historically been low.
According to a report by the World Economic Forum, increasing the number of women in technology could lead to more inclusive and diverse solutions to global challenges. The report highlights that gender-diverse teams are more likely to innovate and generate ideas that benefit a broader population. By empowering girls with coding skills, we are not just equipping them to solve today’s problems; we are preparing them to lead the charge in addressing the challenges of tomorrow.
Breaking Down Barriers
Despite the many benefits, girls still face significant barriers when it comes to learning and applying coding skills. These barriers include gender stereotypes, limited access to resources, and a lack of female role models in technology. However, as more girls are given the opportunity to learn coding, these barriers are beginning to erode.
Programs and initiatives that focus on mentoring, providing resources, and creating supportive communities are crucial in this effort. When girls see other women succeeding in tech, it reinforces the belief that they too can make a difference. This representation is vital in encouraging more girls to take up coding and use it as a tool for change.
A Brighter Future Through Coding
The future looks bright as more girls are empowered to solve real-world problems through coding. These young innovators are not only creating impactful solutions but are also shaping the future of technology and society. By continuing to support and encourage girls in coding, we can ensure that the next generation of leaders and problem solvers is more diverse, inclusive, and equipped to tackle the challenges of our world.
