Just saw How Do You Live (Boy and the Heron). In short, it delivered but this isn't a review, we're chatting about a single animator. Avoiding all trailers I was surprised to see this opening scene:

That's definitely Shinya Ohira, I thought.

Often I wonder about the process of an artist bringing a concept to reality. Starting life as an idea, it gets filtered, drained and blemished through the process of reaching the audience.

When I see Ohira's scenes I become aware of my heartbeat as if it's synchronizing with his.

Though I first saw his work on Akira, this short from the Animatrix was THE ONE. I still call it "Ya Know, The Skateboard Kid" and people know exactly what I'm talking about.

Ohira's opening scene in How Do You Live was left uncorrected which worked with the nightmarish atmosphere of the sequence. I'd imagine bringing his work on-model has to be hell.

You're watching an anime and suddenly, THAT SCENE pops up. Kill Bill, Howl's Moving Castle, Ping Pong, you know the ones.

In animation, they want you to stay on-model, keep the show cohesive, but speaking as one that works in the industry, I want to be seen.

You're watching something and get asked, "Wanna see something really cool?" and you get this crazy animation flex. I want to see artist go wild. Gimme THAT SCENE!

Hi Mike!

Words can not explain how excited I am for The Fall of the House of Usher! I've begun rereading a lot of Poe in order to catch the little homages. It's looking like a great way to say Sayonara to Netflix!

I was wondering, the "Flanaganverse" has racked up so many "regulars" with Carla Gugino (whose role in Usher has me super stoked!), Henry Thomas, Rahul Kohli, and gosh that list can go *energizer bunny voice* on and on and on. Will we be seeing some of their faces again as you move over to Amazon (projects permitting)? I know that circle keeps growing, I mean you have freaking Luke Skywalker, but seeing the familiar faces in your projects really feels like coming into a family reunion which is why I ask.

Definitely! These aren't just some of my favorite actors, they're some of my very best friends. A lot of us are family now. And it doesn't matter where I am, I'll always want to work with my family. So yes, you'll see a lot of familiar faces on the various new Amazon series... and anywhere else I happen to be working.

When Kathryn Hahn was revealed to be Agatha Harkness, my first thought was “She’s young to be playing this character.” I’d grown accustomed to the elderly witch from comics. I thought it was a tad ageist, but didn’t dwell on it. Hahn killed it on WandaVision, and I enjoyed her performance.

But then Marvel Comics would mystically de-age Agatha during the climax of their Midnight Suns mini-series from 2022, and admittedly, I didn’t understand why the character couldn’t just be an older woman.

So kudos to Agatha All Along’s creative team for pleasantly surprising me during the show’s finale by revealing a mature, comics-accurate Harkness dressed in a beautiful new costume design.
