anyway soap who was sent into a coma far too early on in his military career, his parents refusing to let him go until the doctors gave them a definitive no, there’s no chance of recovery, and his conscience has lived on as a part of the simulation ever since—really, since its earliest days. and it’s… lonely.

and ghost who had gotten the chance to live out his career, and some of his life, but alone. he functioned as the days came and went but never really lived. the military was his life until it wasn’t anymore, and from then on he felt lost. until, not so long after his retirement, his body started to shut down, and he’s presented with the option of passing on into the simulation or just dying, plain and simple.

and he grapples with that decision for a while. because tommy, beth, joseph—they all died too early for this kind of opportunity. ghost would never have that possibility to reunite with them, if there even was an afterlife. but then he gets a chance at the simulation before the decision has to be made, and that’s where he meets soap. where he falls in love, and finally gets to experience the proper life he’d missed out on.

ghost tells soap about his dilemma. soap tells ghost his story in return. says he wouldn’t blame ghost for not living on in the simulation, because he himself never had a choice.

but ghost thinks on it. finally realizes that… maybe it’s in death, but isn’t this what tommy had always said he wanted ghost to have, before his own untimely death? to love someone, to live freely as himself?

so, with no one to hold him back, ghost makes the decision to have his conscience be moved to the simulation permanently, to have his physical self left behind forever, if only to be with soap for an eternity. if only to be young again in a world that didn’t want to hurt him like the real world had. a world that never would.

One of the things I was most disappointed about in crystallized was Nya’s arc. I definitely think that the struggling with her powers angle was the way to go, but honestly? She’d just spent a year completely merged with the sea, and all that comes after that is frustration that she can’t use her powers anymore. I think that if anything, she should have been scared that they would come back. She was part of the ocean, and that’s not something that you can erase. Every time she’s near water, she can hear it whispering to her, asking her to come back. It misses her, and sometimes, she thinks that she misses it too. Wouldn’t it be nice to experience that feeling of oneness, of being everything again? When she does use her powers, it feels like walking a tightrope, like if she uses even slightly too much, if she loses focus for even a second, she’ll go tumbling back into the waters and Nya will be gone again. And everyone else tries to tell her to trust herself, that she won’t lose control and that eventually she’ll feel normal again, but she knows. The sea will always be with her now, waiting for her to return.

howdy again, sorry for bothering you so much! i'm not sure what your work experience is like but if you're new to the work force something i saw a while back was to act like i'm a background character doing what x characters do

so for example: i'm a graphic designer and when i have a big project that needs all my focus, it's been helpful for me to think "what would a background graphic designer character be doing during a scene?" somehow when i get into that mindset, it really helps me stay in the zone

sorry if none of that made sense, but when you mentioned masking it made me think of my little trick! ((also also i'm maybe totally not working on some laughingstock of my own as we speak LMAOOOOOO--))
