Following the events of fifth year, a new adventure awaits for Norah Lee. Boys, exams, school events, common room parties, and old foes outside of Hogwarts. Even battling pensieve guardians was easier than this.

Main Pair: OC/? Genre: Adventure/Angst/Fluff (it's a little of everything, tbh)

KEEP IN MIND: Characters are aged up (even if the story's got them in sixth year) to make it more appropriate. Time period is leaning towards the modern day so in case you might find anachronisms in the dialogue or references, this is why. This may also be quite a lengthy fic too.

BE WARNED: Social anxiety, mentions of blood and injury, grief, drinking, kissing but nothing more than that, death (this is Hogwarts Legacy, after all)

P.P.S: Final stretch in guessing who "Nick" is! Also, introducing Nicholas Carrow who's probably gonna be the new "bully" so to speak. Norah reveals her backstory to Ominis then Sebastian. Gryffindor party chapter is coming next!

Chapter 9

Norah paced back and forth in the Slytherin girls' dormitory the next day. It was officially the last day of Professor Ronen's homework of secret summoning. She laid out all the letters "Nick" had given her, alongside her cluttered rolls of parchment after she just finished her Transfiguration essay, with another homework on ancient runes. Norah quickly closed her ink bottles before she slid off her bed.

Nerida watched her with an amused expression. "I don't know who that 'Nick' is, but my bet is on Sebastian," She said, almost nonchalantly before flipping through the pages of Witch Weekly.

"Possibly, but also possibly not," Norah said. "It could be Garreth, for all we know, or maybe even Leander."

"Or Ominis," Nerida pointed out with a knowing look. "You know, I saw him tell off Nicholas Carrow the other day."

"Carrow? What's he done?"

Nerida put the magazine down, a serious expression on her face. "Carrow's been going around telling people that you're a-" She looked quite pained, scrunching her face in disgust. "Mudblood. Ugh, I hate that word. And the worst thing is he's got some Ravenclaws agreeing. And that boy you've told off for sneaking a kneazle whisker last year."

"What did Ominis say?"

Just then, Imelda went in, having overheard their conversation in time. "Ominis threatened to tell Black, and when Carrow pointed out that Black shares a similar belief against muggle-borns, Ominis threatened to make up something," She said. "Don't think it got through to Carrow as much. Pureblood against pureblood or something like that."

Norah nodded. She realized that she hadn't told anyone much about where she came from. While she appreciated that Ominis defended her, she knew she had yet to tell any of them about her family. "Do you stand for it, Imelda?" She asked curiously.

"Merlin, I would never, it's a disgusting belief," Imelda scoffed. "It's a waste of time, when I could've used that time to practice my turns. If I want to get scouted by the Holyhead Harpies, I had better stay as focused as I can and I intend to."

"Understood," Norah stopped in front of the letters.

"You're surprisingly calm about this," Imelda pointed out.

"Well, it's a shame Carrow's like that. I don't really care about him, but if he goes after people I know, it's going to be a different story," She said.

Imelda and Nerida chuckled, exchanging knowing looks. "That's our Hogwarts heroine," The quidditch team captain grinned. "Besides, Carrow better think twice about his words before uttering mudblood around a lot of us. He probably shouldn't forget how you took down a troll and a goblin warlord. He's easy bait."

The three girls snickered. "And the fact that you could take down groups of Ashwinders without blinking. I'd like to see him try doing what you did in fifth year," Nerida frowned. "We may be under Slytherin house, but we know to knock our own down a peg if needed."

"Too bad Ranrok's dead then," Norah joked.

Her owl suddenly swooped in, carrying yet another letter. "Ooh, speak of the devil, another letter from 'Nick'?" Grace grinned as she went inside. "This might be the last one before the party tomorrow night."

"Probably. Maybe I can reply to Nick directly this time," Norah shrugged, taking the envelope from Starlight's leg and giving her a treat. The owl gave an affectionate nip at her finger and settled herself on her perch.

Norah cleared her things and left the room, wanting to speak with Ominis about what Nerida and Imelda told her. She passed by Violet, who told her about what happened between Ominis and Nicholas. Upon reaching the common room, she saw the small crowd of boys gathered near the Slytherin statue. Among them was Nicholas himself.

Nicholas Carrow looked similar to Harlow in that he looked quite gaunt. While not as tall, he had a dark brown buzzcut. He often looked like he was about to cast curses on anyone who stood in his way.

"Oi! Mudblood!"

The entire common room had gone silent, Norah raising a brow at him. His expression twisted into a grin that she knew was him about to try and provoke her. "Shut it, Carrow!" Grace shot at him, a look of disgust on her features as she heard what happened and went back out.

But the blonde's attempt to silence him did nothing. "What? We're in Slytherin house, not so sure Norah Lee the mudblood belongs in here, though," Nicholas took a few strides.

"Oh, you were referring to me, I'm sorry," Norah spoke, feeling the eyes of everyone else on her now. "What's with the slur all of a sudden?"

"You heard me," Nicholas pointedly replied. "You might have taken out a dark wizard and goblin for all we know. But you being a mudblood will never get you as far. I mean, you came into this school four bloody years late. It's that muggle blood, I suspect."

Norah studied his features. She was relieved this wasn't taking place elsewhere in the castle. She'd hate to see the actual muggle-borns having to witness this. "What do you want, Carrow? Need help with your homework or something?" She asked, wanting to get to the point. "Or are you just going to stand there and call me mudblood all day? If that's what you want, mate, you should find something else to do with your time."

Her remarks set off snickers from many of their fellow housemates. She knew it was only going to fuel the fire Nicholas had going. But she knew if they were to settle this, it was best to get to the point of the name calling and smearing. Nicholas brandished his wand and pointed it at her.

"Expelliarmus!"

In lightning speed, Norah non-verbally cast protego to shield herself. When Nicholas was caught off-guard, Norah non-verbally cast levioso, seeing him floating a few feet from the floor. She approached him. "Hate is too strong an emotion to waste on something you don't like," She said, her voice low but stern. "I don't mind a little duel, but if you ever utter the word mudblood to anyone in this school again, I'll show you what I've been through in fifth year."

Nicholas fell to the floor, seething with rage and humiliation as Norah left the common room. All the more she wanted to talk to Ominis and Sebastian, if he was even around when their argument happened. She went to the Undercroft where she saw the blonde himself, sitting down on one of the plush red couches. He looked furious.

"Norah? Is that you?" Yet his voice didn't seem to show any hint of anger.

"Yeah, I heard about what you did with Carrow. Are you alright?" She said as she approached him, sitting down on the space next to the blonde.

"I am, but I wish I could've done more. The nerve of Carrow to call you such an unspeakable word," Ominis sighed in frustration. It was a word he heard all too often with his family, aside from torturing muggles for sport. "I hope Carrow knows what's good for him. I will not hesitate to use my family's connection to Black to get him expelled if he ever dares utter such words again."

As Ominis was about to say more, he was cut off when Norah wrapped her arms around him in a hug. His body froze, caught off-guard by her warm embrace. His heart was racing, his cheeks were heating up. It was like being thawed out of an icy prison, a warmth he hadn't felt in a long time. The only time he felt something similar was when his beloved aunt Noctua Gaunt would give him a hug, protecting him from his own family's abuse while she was around.

"That was very brave of you, what you tried to do to Carrow," She said softly, nuzzling his shoulder. Norah wanted to explain that she also gave him a little telling off before coming to the Undercroft, but somehow, she felt the story would be better told some other time. She leaned back until she pulled away gently, her hands trailing down his arms and on the tops of his hands. "I realized I haven't told you and the others much about me, where I've come from," She chuckled.

Ominis tilted his head. "What do you mean?"

Norah relaxed into the couch. "I am what Professor Garlick would refer to as a late bloomer," She said. "My magical abilities came in very late, to the surprise and relief of my parents. They're both squibs."

The blonde's expression fell slightly at her revelation. Aside from muggle-borns, squibs were also among those that the wizarding world regarded with some prejudice. People who were born into magical families but do not possess magical abilities themselves, they weren't allowed to attend Hogwarts or any other magical school, and more often than not, integrated with the muggles instead.

"My parents worked to live a comfortable life, even amongst the muggles. They live in a classy district in London, something your family might be familiar with. But even if they were well-regarded amongst the muggles, they never forgot all about these things. My mum used to read the Tales of Beetle the Bard to me at night, my dad would talk about the Quidditch teams. They'd buy some storybooks in Diagon Alley with some help, and they'd have it around to remind themselves of where they came from," Norah chuckled as she recalled the details, glancing at Ominis every now and then, who was intently listening and smiling at the memories.

"I attended a muggle school for most of my life, but I didn't make much friends there really, until my 15th birthday, I started seeing those ancient magic traces."

Norah smiled as she remembered. "And that was when I received the Hogwarts letter from Professor Weasley," She said. "A few days later, Professor Fig arrived, and started to teach me the basics of everything, and the rest is history."

"What do they think of what you've done in fifth year?" Ominis asked as carefully as possible.

"Oh, they were incredibly surprised," She laughed. "They couldn't believe that I did all that I did then. Sometimes, whenever I have to talk about it, it surprises me too. Me? Slay trolls? Acromantulas? Take down poachers, ashwinders, and goblin loyalists? Even a goblin warlord? It's what the muggles say, too good to be true."

"They should be proud of you," He said. "I know I would be. And I am."

Norah smiled. "I hope they are. Thank you."

Ominis reached out for her hand, moving up to her wrist instead to gently pat it, which she appreciated. This was one of those times that he desperately wanted to see her face, and really tell her that she was the most amazing person he had ever met. Yet, as only he knew how, he channeled this growing feeling of admiration through this moment between them.

"Have you told this to anyone?" He asked.

"No. Not really. I suspect the teachers all know, but as for the students, I'm not sure," She said. "Sebastian's going to know in time, as will Natty, Poppy, and Amit. And whoever else might hear. If Nicholas finds out, I don't really care."

The mention of the Carrow boy made Ominis frown again. "Norah, don't concern yourself with whatever Carrow's up to, or plans to do," He said. "Frankly, I must admit, he reminds me of my family. Something I have no wish to be part of."

She shook her head, placing her hand over his. "Don't worry. I did threaten him against calling anyone mudblood earlier. He tried to disarm me, but I levitated him first."

"Good girl," A small smirk played across the blonde's face.

Sebastian appeared, looking rather smug upon seeing Norah. "I heard about what you did to Carrow in the common rooms. Merlin, I wish I could've seen it," He said, sitting down on the floor in front of them, putting his bag to the side. "I have to be there next time you tell Carrow off. I heard he's still livid."

The two of them chuckled. "Alright, you will be there if Carrow tries to do anything while I'm around. Ominis has threatened to frame him for something too. Besides, you needed to be here much earlier for another reason," She hummed.

"Really? What?" Sebastian was curious.

It was in this second time that Norah felt more at ease at revealing where she came from. When Natty and Poppy first pressed her on her beginnings, she was a little hesitant, feeling a little embarrassed for entering Hogwarts a little late. While she wasn't really ashamed of her beginnings, Norah remembered what her parents had always told her. That what mattered more was what they chose to make of themselves, and that they worked hard and were always kind.

The Sallow boy was left stunned by her revelation. "The teachers all probably know, as for everyone else, I'm not sure," Norah shrugged.

"Well, I'm always one for the belief that anyone can have magical potential no matter where they come from," Sebastian nodded. "Carrow better watch his mouth from now on. He's not going to be safe even in the common rooms."

"Unfortunately, Carrow's not the only one who shares the same sentiment," Ominis pointed out with a huff.

Norah remembered the letter she received from "Nick." She took it out from her pocket and opened the envelope. Upon reading the message, the suspicions she had long had as to who Nick was clicked. Her heart was suddenly pounding at the confirmation the more she read the note.

To Norah Lee,

The cost of making only the maker knows, Valueless if bought, but sometimes traded. A poor man may give one as easily as a kind. When one is broken, pain and deceit are assured.

An Almost Comprehensive Interactive Guide on the British Branch of the Malfoy Family

This is to help fanfic writers get a clearer view of the tree and who's related to who any things like that, as well as to discuss genealogy in the wizarding world, cause I'm deeply into ancestry and etc rn. Most of the characters here are completely fanon and I just came up with them on the spot.

Notes on specific members of the family:

Armand Malfoy and Ermesinda Malfoy (of Normandy) arrive in Pevensey, England with William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest. He is given a piece of land in Wiltshire as reward, which soon becomes Malfoy Manor. Later on in life, Armand sires a son named Adelemus.

Marie Malfoy neé Devereaux marries Jacques Malfoy II and has Nicole and Jacques Malfoy III. The latter who died a year before she, both dying from the Bubonic Plague.

Nicholas Malfoy II courts a young Elizabeth Tudor I in 1550 before breaking it off the same year. (Also correction: Elizabeth was born 1533, NOT 1553. A mistake the sign of my sleep deprivation yuh 🤠)

Bernadette Black neé Malfoy, eldest sister of Florian and Artemis Malfoy marries Eridanus Black. The pair produces one child Hercules Black. Bernadette, deeply resentful at the slow descent of her marriage, after a more violent argument than normal, informs muggle wizard hunters and allows for Eridanus Black to be burned at the stake. (Inspired by Artemisia Blackwood's story)

Septimus Malfoy marries Abigail Weasley, who has two children named Magnus and Josephine. Septimus divorces Abigail for his young mistress, Geraldine Yaxley and disowns his children, not allowing them to use the Malfoy name. This conflict will fuel the feud the Malfoys and Weasleys have even in the present day.

Constantine Malfoy's brother-in-law, Marianus Flint taught Arithmancy at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for nearly 70 years! (1884 - 1952)

Abraxas Malfoy was allegedly involved in a shady plot that pertains to the attempted sabotage of the first muggleborn Minister's political campaign that was unsuccessful, later on, the Minister in question, Nobby Leach, contracted a mysterious illness and left the post in 1968.

Lucius Malfoy is the current patriarch of the Malfoy Family, the son of Abraxas Malfoy, husband of Narcissa Black and father of Draco Malfoy and paternal grandfather of Scorpius Malfoy. Believing strongly in pureblood supremacy, he joined the Death Eaters who agreed with his stance on blood purity. He was Lord Voldemort's right hand man throughout the First Wizarding War, but was replaced by his sister-in-law, Bellatrix Lestrange during the Second Wizarding War. (I basically "copied the homework but don't make it look obvious" for Lucius's bio lol)

Also more sidenote: If you see a Malfoy sibling have a child and their children seemingly died childless. (Nicholas, Athena, Hermes Carrow and Hercules Black) they had children, I was just too lazy to add it in. Same goes with Hardwin and Emmeline Potter.

Small Introduction:

Hey there! I have done many iterations of this and honestly I just miss it! I hope you all will take the time to read this over as i spent a lot of time on this and it's not fun when people don't read everything.

Plot:

This does go chronologically through Harry Potter's years at Hogwarts and the struggles he deals with as well as his friends and enemies at school. But not only will we be following Harry Potter but some other characters.

My main character, Catalina Thorne, has gone through quite a lot. Not by any means as much as Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived. But she has dealt with things her classmates and friends could scarcely ever go through. She had to watch her life unfold as a lie and had to lie about the true death of her family. She has to keep a secret of the family safe. The one person she shouldn't trust her secret to is the son of a death eater. But Catalina, the shy sweet innocent girl that she plays, goes and gets a crush on the worst person she can, Draco Malfoy. Can she manage to keep her family secret when her boyfriend's family is one of the darkest wizarding families? Find out!

Rules:

1. Please make sure you know Wizarding World lore and background. I will make a channel for information if anyone has any questions.

2. Sexual activities must happen in a private channel and with the proper procedures. The students can only do this if you are in year 5. Younger years are allowed to do hand holding and kissing and the like.

3. You are allowed to play as many characters as you can control. Just please don't play too many that it's a burden for you.

Nicholas’s ink toppled over when a body slammed into the end of the table he was doing his History of Magic essay at. Quickly, he snatched up his parchment to save it from being ruined. In the process, his eyes also lifted and he recoiled when he saw the mean, square mug of Felix Carrow looming above him. “Hello?” he tried, hoping a soft greeting might cool some of the ire glinting and flashing in the older boy’s pale blue-gray gaze. Carrow’s lips pulled into a jeering sneer. “Hello?” he growled. “To Hell with hello!” Slamming his hands down on the table, he spat, “You need to get your brother under control, Snape.” -–- Or Nicholas tries to make Severus see reason.

The book was dull and tiring. We started off with Cassia in the . . . I genuinely forgot, but she had been moved from Oria to another place to farm. I actually squealed when we got to see Xander again, because I really like Xander and I was thinking, “Is he about to become a major character?” NO. Because all the blond pretty boys who are sweet and nice and loyal don’t get happy endings. I repeat, Team Xander Carrow and Team Nicholas “Nick” Davis. Grahhh. Now, Cassia gets sent to an Aberration camp with more girls, because there are small towns where male Aberrations are sent to be killed by the Society. Cassia finds out that Ky had been there, but he’d run away strategically during another attack, taking Eli, a young boy who reminded him of Cassia’s little brother, and Vick, the man with natural-born leadership. Cassia decides to hunt down Ky with her new-found friend Indie. They search for days, in which every paragraph from Cassia is spent mooning and pining over Ky. She never stops thinking about him. She keeps thinking about his lips and his eyes and their memories and there’s a certain point where I get sick of hearing about Ky so much that I skip to his perspective just to avoid Cassia. Ky’s perspective was actually pretty fun. I felt like I got to see another version of him, one that wasn’t in rose-colored glasses by Cassia. Not only that, I liked Eli and Vick. Vick was a romantic and missed his girlfriend Laney, who was an Anomaly. Eli was a young boy who seemed to like picture books and painting and being creative, but one who was also steadfast in his morals and admired Ky and Vick. I liked seeing them travel. It was a breath of fresh air from Cassia’s perspective, where she would just keep walking and running and pining for Ky and pining for Xander and wondering how he’s doing. Seriously. This girl has a life. She doesn’t need to revolve around two boys. Would’ve loved it if Condie had done the same thing with Cassia as she did Ky, and let her think more about how she’s going to survive and what she’s going to do and her family, her survival instincts, her surroundings, just ANYTHING BUT KY AT THIS POINT. PLEASE. You’re killing me over here, Condie.

basically, What Died Didn't Stay Dead is my funky little reincarnation series!

her concept is basically she starts off as nicholas flamel's daughter but because of her parents' use of the philosopher's stone, she's fucked up. She's not immortal but she's constantly reincarnated with the same face over and over again she doesn't remember everything about her past lives (but she has some dream-vision things about them), she's cursed to always die young — it's not an Actual Magical Curse but it's a thing™, and her golden era reincarnation is her last life because of the stone getting destroyed

the five ocs are Catherine Flamel, who's the actual daughter. She's shipped with an oc named Sébastien Gautier. I don't really know much else about her but she's French and a gifted alchemist, and she loves their gardens more than anything, she was either a Gryffindor or a Beauxbatons student I keep changing my mind lmao

after her is Gwendolyn Pendragon, who's a Fantastic Beasts oc! She was a Ravenclaw at school and there was lots of mutual pining with Newt Scamander. She moved to New York for Some Reason, and reunites with Newt, initially just helping him "clean up his mess" by finding the various creatures he lost but she ends up joining the fight against Grindlewald. Her family history can be traced all the way back to King Arthur, but she uses a different last name in New York to avoid attention

then there's Deianira Carrow, who's my Tom Riddle ship. She's a Slytherin pureblood and the two are very close for quite some time. After Hogwarts they're still together and she's a core member of his friend group, but the more they veer into fanaticism the more she begins to doubt him and starts to pull away, and I'm kind of considering having him be the one to kill her during a particularly intense fight, but I'm not 100% sure about that

After her is Eurydice Crouch, who's a marauder's era oc! She's Barty Crouch's twin sister and in Slytherin, and an eventual Jily ship. She's known James for her entire life and they've always gotten along, so while her sorting isn't great for their friendship, it doesn't immediately turn into hate. She becomes a spy for the Order while still in school, and Voldemort is a bit obsessed with her due to her resemblance to Deianira. Her brother is the one to ultimately realize that she's a spy, and is the one to kill her

and lastly is Lysithea Selwyn, who's a Ravenclaw shipped with Fred Weasley! tbh I don't really know much about her yet, I think she's going to be one year younger than the twins/one year older than the trio. Voldemort is going to be obsessed with her too, and I think that like, after the stone gets destroyed her memories of her past lives are going to be a bit stronger and start getting all mixed up in her head and leave her kind of always feeling like she's going crazy

I haven't done a whole lot of plotting yet tbh but I'm just obsessed with the concept! I came up with it a few weeks ago but you know how indecisive I am in general lmao and having to make five times as many decisions was a struggle let me tell you

Following the events of fifth year, a new adventure awaits for Norah Lee. Boys, exams, school events, common room parties, and old foes outside of Hogwarts. Even battling pensieve guardians was easier than this.

Main Pair: OC/? Genre: Adventure/Angst/Fluff (it's a little of everything, tbh)

KEEP IN MIND: Characters are aged up (even if the story's got them in sixth year) to make it more appropriate. Time period is leaning towards the modern day so in case you might find anachronisms in the dialogue or references, this is why. This may also be quite a lengthy fic too.

BE WARNED: Social anxiety, mentions of blood and injury, grief, drinking, kissing but nothing more than that, death (this is Hogwarts Legacy, after all)

Chapter 14

Norah was brought to the hospital wing following the duel, with Nurse Blainey particularly alarmed at the sight of her blood spattered form. The blouse that was once a starched white had turned red It took a simple counter curse and a few vials of wiggenweld to heal her and other spells to repair her slashed clothes and scars. The next thing she remembered, she was in the bed once again, and this time, Professor Hecat was standing by her.

"Are you doing well, Ms. Lee?" She asked.

"Yes, Professor," She nodded, feeling her face for any scars that the curse left.

"While I do appreciate a good duel for practice, I hardly think resorting to dangerous curses is the mark of a good duellist especially within the confines of the school," Professor Hecat explained. "By the looks of it, and from the testimonies of the students who watched, Mr. Carrow's intention was, well, anything but good. Frankly, and don't quote me on this, Mr. Carrow possibly wanted to kill you, or at the very least, injure you severely."

"I've handled him before. It's not the first time he's tried to disarm me," Norah said quietly. "The first time was in the common room, when I asked what he wanted since he kept calling me-"

"Mudblood," Professor Hecat finished. "Sadly, Mr. Carrow is not alone in that belief. Our very own headmaster is one with that same belief. Any warnings will fall on deaf ears because of that belief. I doubt he'll stop, however."

"People like him never do," Norah shook her head. She slowly sat up. "Unfortunately, he also happens to be under the same house as me."

Professor Hecat hummed in agreement. "That is also true. As I've expected from you, you've held your own, and didn't need to use any curse to respond. I'd give you some advice, but I know I can trust you to properly defend yourself, especially to a bully like Mr. Carrow."

Norah watched her walk off, giving a wave to Nurse Blainey, who gave her some more wiggenweld potion to make sure she was completely alright. "For brutes like Mr. Carrow, he'd have used an Unforgivable on you if he could," Nurse Blainey scoffed, shaking her head.

"Thank you, Nurse Blainey," Norah drank the potion, feeling a little more energized.

"No trouble, no trouble at all. If Mr. Carrow knows what's good for him, he'd keep away from the curses otherwise it's Azkaban for him," She said. "Good on you for keeping your ground, his track record is no match for yours."

It reminded Norah of what Nerida and Imelda told her about Nicholas. She smoothed out her outfit before leaving, unsure whether she wanted to see anyone or return to the Room of Requirement, or even the map chamber. But there was one other place she knew to go to, one that wasn't frequented by a lot of students, a place that she could ironically be alone.

Taking several passages later, keen on not showing herself to Sebastian, Ominis, Amit, or even Natty and Poppy, she went to the Bell Tower, down the passage to the north dungeons, where the concrete dragon was. Just before going down the stairs, she entered the secret door that led to the room she thought of going.

The werewolf displays, including the werewolf saga tapestries on the walls.

Since the start of the term, Norah found herself wanting to be alone more often. There was a kind of shame that came over her, after simply going through the motions of everyday life in Hogwarts. This was despite presenting a rather unbothered disposition. Now everyone knew her family background, everyone saw her fall from a duel, even if she was taken aback by the curse Nicholas cast on her, and she still couldn't forget the boggart incident.

No one even showed up at the hospital wing when she was brought there after the duel earlier. It was probably to be expected, she thought, as she sat down in front of the tapestries, observing every detail of the story. The witch was bitten by a werewolf, and tried to run away to protect her son.

Norah eventually settled on the possibility that she probably, unknowingly, skipped a class today, which would explain for them not coming to see her. She spent another moment in the secret room before eventually leaving, an idea forming in her head, something she nearly forgot.

Harlow. The loyalist mines. What she remembered the ashwinders and poachers talking about in Horklump Hollow. She needed to see for herself what he might be up to. As it was still a weekday, Norah made her plans to travel to the Overlook mine once again, to see if anything restarted in recent months.

She was about to go down the stairs, down the path to the map chamber, when she saw the Gryffindor Adele Kang, one of the chasers of their house team. From what Norah knew about her, she was the younger sister of Alexandra Kang, a keeper for the Montrose Magpies. Imelda saw her as a rival.

"Did you just come from in there?" She asked curiously.

Norah glanced at the "door" behind her. "Yeah. I was looking at some interesting tapestries. The werewolf displays are inside if you're curious" She gestured to the passage.

Adele just grinned. "I might just later, kind of like a dare after-hours," She said. "Well, you've cleaned yourself up. Just not too long ago, everyone could've sworn you were a Gryffindor instead of Slytherin with how red your face and clothes have gotten."

"Oh," Norah chuckled. "I'm alright now. Nothing some wiggenweld couldn't fix."

"Glad to hear it," Adele nodded. "That bastard Carrow's got some nerve to cast sectumsempra on you, it's almost like he wanted to kill you!"

Norah shook his head. "He's had plenty of chances to try, he just wanted to show off."

Adele chuckled. "Oh yeah he definitely wanted to, since winning Crossed Wands. Well, he's an easy target, don't you think? At least ashwinders and poachers posed a challenge, if those rumors were true. If I were you, I'd have just treated him like a dark mongrel, and even I know those seem easy to subdue, much less kill."

Norah just smiled, unsure whether to reveal her own experience in defeating those creatures. "So, practicing today for the season?" She asked.

Adele tapped her broomstick. "Yeah! This season should be fun. But I am surprised you're not playing for Slytherin house, I would've thought the person who bested Imelda and her time trials would have a spot on the team."

"Oh she asked me, kept asking to be honest, but NEWTs are already doing my head in," Norah replied with a shake of her head. "Besides, I couldn't be the only one who can beat Imelda."

Adele raised a brow. "I'm just gonna think that you haven't been in Hogwarts long enough. Imelda's one of the best fliers in the school. In fact, she beat my times during third year. Not that I was sore about it, of course. I already know my sister's just waiting for me to try out for the Magpies."

"That must be nice, having someone in your family play quidditch professionally. My father talks a lot about the Magpies, they're his favorite team aside from Puddlemere United," Norah recalled, smiling at the memory while also being impressed.

Adele looked proud. "That's great. I could send you a signed poster if you like. I need only write to my sister for it and she'll happily give some to a fan."

"That would be brilliant," Norah nodded. "Thank you, Adele."

"You're welcome!" Adele said, before walking off, following some students into the Alchemy classroom.

Norah went to the nearest floo flame, thinking that she should probably head to that mine at once. She looked around, wondering if anyone was nearby. "The Overlook Mine," She muttered, and suddenly felt someone grab her arm as they vanished.

It was when Norah reappeared in the floo flame close to the mine that she realized who it was. It was Ominis, who immediately straightened himself up, wand already outstretched and its tip glowing red. "Norah," He said, with a little clear of this throat. "Why are you going here?"

"Ominis?" She stared at him. Although he looked a little different, noticing the little bandaid over his cheek. "Did you get into a fight?"

"I-" Ominis wasn't sure whether to say it. Not long after she was cursed with sectumsempra, a commotion ensued even as Professor Hecat issued a punishment to Nicholas Carrow. He felt his blood boiling then, consumed with rage over what the fifth year had done to Norah. While he tried to knock out some of Nicholas' friends, he suffered some injuries of his own. But it wasn't just him. Garreth had also broken free from Amit and Leander to try and attack Nicholas with a few punches to his face because blood status be damned, it was clear to them that Nicholas would do anything to hurt Norah badly.

Ominis was quick to exploit his familial connections to Professor Black, telling him that it was a simple duel, and that Nicholas brought it on himself. Professor Black seemed convinced by his explanation and decided not to impose anything else. He was also prepared to hold true to his threat to Nicholas, that he would gladly frame him for something if it meant he would stop coming after muggle-borns and those who weren't purebloods.

But before Ominis could say anything, Norah gently touched the corner of his mouth, which got just as busted from a punch thrown by Nicholas. "You're hurt," She said softly. "Did you got to the hospital wing at least?"

Ominis shook his head. He swore the spot where she touched him was warm. "I don't think it'll be any good. They're all there. Everyone has been looking for you when they saw you weren't there," He said.

"Oh, that's strange, no one else was around when I regained consciousness," Norah said. A part of her wanted to keep looking over at his wounds, see if he was really okay. Her fingertips lingered for a moment, Norah fighting the urge to touch his cheek. She swallowed the lump that was beginning to form in her throat. "Did you-did you fight someone?"

Ominis placed his hand over hers that was on his cheek, his fingers slowly closing over hers. Should I not fight the one that nearly tried to kill the woman I love? He thought. "It wasn't just me," He looked down, almost embarrassed about what he did. "Forgive me, Norah, I wanted to hold true to my threat to Carrow, I shouldn't worry you like this."

Norah stared at their hands, her heart racing. It was the first time Ominis ever held her hand, in this way. Since she realized her feelings for him in fifth year, Norah found herself observing him more often. She didn't want to overwhelm him with her feelings, and tried to keep her distance, only to realize how hard it was to do so, even if the object of her affection, that was standing in front of her, was visually impaired. "Ominis Gaunt, would punch someone even if he's at a disadvantage," She said quietly. "That's very bold of you."

Ominis swallowed, wanting nothing more but to keep holding her hand. "I-Thank you," He said, internally groaning as he let her hand go, his own hand falling to his side. He cleared his throat again. "What are you doing here for?"

Norah pulled her hand away as well. "I wanted to get back to investigating Harlow. I have a feeling he'd be seeking out all the drills and things that the loyalists left behind. We overheard the poachers and ashwinders say Harlow plans on rebuilding the enterprise, perhaps come after the repository of power again," She explained. "I'm not sure if Harlow will succeed in getting to the repository, but if he's going to try and rebuild the empire he once built with Rookwood, he might resort to something dangerous."

The blonde nodded in understanding. "I trust you, if Harlow seems up to something, it is best we put a stop to him. I just hope we don't regret any of this," He said.

Norah looked at him curiously. "Really? That's all you'll say? You're a lot more cautious than I am, Ominis."

"You know I won't be able to stop you even if I could," Ominis said, almost defeated in the way he said it. "I just don't want you to go at this alone. Even something like this. And besides, I have a supply of wiggenweld potions with me from if anything happens."

The moment was met with levity as Norah chuckled. "Alright, the Overlook mine, here we come."

The two of them treaded down the path that led to the entrances of the mine. It wasn't surprising that the loyalist camps remained, abandoned, some of which had been overrun by nature. Some of the nearest tents were already covered in Devil's Snare. "Sebastian told me you two went in here last year," He said as they entered the cavernous mine.

"Yeah, we found the pieces of the triptych in the Undercroft. Who would've thought a fifth Keeper used the place," Norah muttered as they carefully looked around, staying alert in case they saw a sign of Harlow's lot. "I wouldn't be surprised if this entire mine is overrun by spiders too, so dead ashwinders, dead poachers, and dead spiders are what we can expect in here."

"Are some of those you've killed?" Ominis attempted to tease.

"Very funny, Ominis," Norah had one gloved hand in her satchel, ready to hurl a chomping cabbage or venomous tentacula in case a spider was near. "You'd do the same if you were in my place...but then I'm not a Gaunt."

Ominis frowned and shook his head as he tried to stay close to her. He swore he could get a whiff of her perfume. "Well, I'd say they should have a reason to be terrified."

"Oh they will be, they'll be more terrified of you than you are of them," Norah said, making her way through the mines, making sure to tell Ominis to jump over the small gaps. "Hold on to me," She whispered, a yelp escaping him as they slid down a slope that she remembered that led her and Sebastian to deal with another set of loyalists, as if the loyalists in the two encampments leading to the mine weren't enough.

The room they landed in was considerably, yet unsurprisingly, littered with the skeletons of loyalists and spiders. But this time, the only change was that there were more crates, crates that included explosive barrels. "I have a feeling there are others in here," Ominis whispered.

He had spoken too soon when a few Ashwinders apparated in front of them, surrounding them. "Fuck," She muttered, non-verbally casting both depulso and diffindo at a duelist and a ranger, making sure to pull Ominis away when the executioner of the group conjured a fiery ring. "You'd rather let this place fall through, eh?" She said, banishing the last remaining soldier back, hitting the stone.

The two of them climbed up the ledge to move forward. "It's safe to say you live an extraordinary life," Ominis tried to keep himself composed, only to let out another yelp when they slid down another slope. "This mine seems a lot bigger than I thought," He said.

"It is," Norah looked out on the open space beyond where they stood. Ominis immediately noted how the ground now felt different, a makeshift stairs having been built along with other things that he could sense, based on how Norah sounded, weren't there before. "Within this mine, also happens to be a secret living space," She said.

"A living space?" Ominis was confused. "Inside a mine?"

"Yes, hundreds of years ago, Isidora stayed in here, one of the places she stayed in to hone her magic," Norah cast a disillusionment charm on herself, along with two bottles of her invisibility potion. Ominis took it as a sign to do the same, Norah handing him an extra vial of the potion. They slid down toward the open space where she remembered had the familiar runes and the way to Isidora's secret space.

Only this time, more Ashwinders seemed to have set up camp, with the use of old loyalist drills and metal devices to try and force the door open. It had closed since she was last there with Sebastian.

"Harlow said a clue to the magic Rookwood and Ranrok sought after was in here," One of them said. "It would've been gone by now."

Norah raised a brow, drinking another invisibility potion to keep herself unseen, as she and Ominis quietly crept up to the farthest people on the sides to start petrifying them. Each of the soldiers and scouts fell to the ground with a slight thud, hardly anyone noticing as Norah cast disillusionment charms over them as well.

"There's always something here, left behind, just look at this door, with those symbols," One duellist pointed out. "They said this was where the child went once last year. There's definitely something behind these doors."

"We're nearly there, Ominis, we'll be back at the Undercroft soon," Norah said, sensing his presence nearby as they approached the remaining few Ashwinders, who were still focused on the doors. Some of them were already trying to blast the doors open, but to no avail.

"Drill them, then," Another duellist commanded, the drill already boring a hole on the ornate marble doors. "Imagine what we'll find behind these. Treasure, I reckon."

"They can't get whatever else that's in there," Norah shook her head, feeling the effects of the potion wear off. Ominis crept up to the other side, and both of them successfully petrified the remaining Ashwinders that were trying to open the door. Taking the disillusionment charms off, Norah threw some of the explosives towards the petrified forms as if to create a diversion while hitting all three rune symbols to open the door.

"I found something," Ominis said as they climbed down the stairs that led to Isidora's private space, along with the crystallized stone that was a secret passageway back into the Undercroft. "I found orders, probably from Harlow, at least that's what I can tell," He handed her the parchment.

"We'll have to get Sebastian and Amit to look through these books. Anything to learn something new about the magic Isidora performed on everyone," Norah said, stuffing some of the books she could get her hands on inside her satchel. Once she was done, seeing Ominis take some of the other books after pointing his wand at it, she grabbed his hand, tugging on it to lead him out of the place. For a moment she felt her cheeks heat up at her own boldness to reach for him in that way while they passed through the crystallized stone.

In a second, they were back in the warmth of the Undercroft. "That was unbelievable," Ominis said breathlessly. "I want to say we were nearly killed, but I have to admit we handled it well," He said. "Thanks to you."

"We make a good team," Norah agreed, realizing that she was still holding his hand. "Thank you for coming with me."

She let go, pulling her hand back before she felt the situation becoming awkward. Only it didn't feel awkward at all. Ominis's cheeks were tinged pink. "O-of course," He said quietly. He remembered his dream again. That it was here in the Undercroft that he tried to bear his soul to her, told her how he felt. "You have to let me know next time where you plan on looking."

A small smile appeared on her face. "I will."

the many faces of tom riddle, part 1

-no hate (this is merely my humble opinion) but i strongly dislike tom hughes as tom riddle, and here’s why-

FULL DISCLAIMER THAT THIS IS JUST MY OPINION OF A CHARACTER WHO DOESN’T HAVE THE STRONGEST CANON CHARACTERIZATION, AND THUS ALL THIS IS BASED ON MY CONCEPTUALIZATION.

Just personally, this fancast induces a lot of cognitive dissonance for me, but this is the first time I’ve been able to sit down and articulate properly why it always throws me for a loop.

Now, does he fit the visual/aesthetic archetype?

Yes. I understand completely why people like this fancast. We know that he is studious, intellectual, and (at the time people generally fancast him for) involved in the criminal underground, and he more-or-less fits the physical description.

And, to be clear, it’s not that I don’t think Tom Hughes could play Tom Riddle, it’s that I don’t think the character he plays in the fancasts is a close enough approximation of Tom Riddle.

For me, herein lies the issue.

Tom Riddle’s character is all about the emotions bubbling under the surface. He’s a disaster waiting to happen -- he’s angry, he’s lonely, he wants revenge, he feels empty and hopeless and desperate, he’s irrational...

Not sure what movie/show the Tom Hughes clips come from, but the character he plays isn’t that at all. the character he plays is very self-possessed, poised, self-aware. Reflective. Remorseful (there are clips of him crying when/after he shoots someone). Introspective. 

That, to me, is not Tom Riddle at all. 

Yes, he does deal with moral conflict, but it’s never at the forefront of his mind. It’s not something he’s constantly grappling with. He doesn’t really... brood in this Hamlet-esque way.

Tom doesn’t think. Sure, he plans, he ruminates, he rationalizes a posteriori. But he’s very unaware of himself (in fact, it’s one of his fatal flaws). It’s not that he doesn’t have emotions; just that his internal state is a mystery most of the time.

He doesn’t connect with his own emotions; he is completely estranged from them. Tom cannot tell you whether he is happy or sad (not just because of his pride). He keeps his emotions and moral compass (which are highly uncomfortable things), in a locked little box, swallows the key, and disregards them. And yet, this character connects so deeply with his emotions that even the audience can see exactly what he’s going through. 

(There’s an openness -- an ease of vulnerability -- that Tom Riddle doesn’t have)

The thing about Tom, is that he hates himself just as much as he hates everyone around him. Creating Horcruxes to save himself from death is not an act of self-love, or even narcissism to the extreme; instead, forcibly ripping your own soul seven times is the most literally and metaphorically self-destructive thing a person could possibly do.

"Of the Horcrux, wickedest of magical inventions, we shall not speak nor give direction —"

If we go all the way back to Book 1, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, you’ll remember that the eponymous material (first described in the Epic of Gilgamesh) is capable of producing the Elixir of Life, a magical substance that makes its drinker immortal, as long as you have a steady supply. Not only that, but according to the beliefs of historical alchemists (such as Nicholas Flamel), it was capable of curing any disease. In the alchemical tradition, it symbolized perfection, enlightenment, and heavenly bliss.

If all Tom Riddle was concerned about was prolonging his life, this is the obvious (and better) option.

Here’s the alchemical symbol of the Philosopher’s Stone. Looks kind of like the Deathly Hallows symbol, right? It represents the interplay of the (at the time, believed) four elements of matter -- a sort of periodic table, if you will.

The mature Philosopher’s Stone was believed to be a red stone (for making gold), and the immature one a white stone (for making silver). Rubeus Hagrid and Albus Dumbledore, anyone??

"So he's made himself impossible to kill by murdering other people?" said Harry. "Why couldn't he make a Sorcerer's Stone, or steal one, if he was so interested in immortality?"

And Dumbledore responds:

"But there are several reasons why, I think, a Sorcerer's Stone would appeal less than Horcruxes to Lord Voldemort.”

"While the Elixir of Life does indeed extend life, it must be drunk regularly, for all eternity, if the drinker is to maintain the immortality. Therefore, Voldemort would be entirely dependent on the Elixir, and if it ran out, or was contaminated, or if the Stone was stolen, he would die just like any other man. Voldemort likes to operate alone, remember. I believe that he would have found the thought of being dependent, even on the Elixir, intolerable...”

And while, yes, he did try to steal it rather than make it, I am sure that in the time it took Tom to make all of his Horcruxes, he could have learned enough alchemy to produce it for himself (or wheedled the information out of Nicholas Flamel). While Dumbledore hypothesizes that it’s because Tom hates feeling dependent, this must be irony, because he spends the first book as a literal parasite, the next three as a virtually helpless creature, and the remainder still reliant on his Horcruxes.

"Well, you must understand that the soul is supposed to remain intact and whole. Splitting it is an act of violation, it is against nature."

But, like me, Dumbledore is making guesses at Tom Riddle’s internal state, and in this case, I think, he’s made an oversight. Horcruxes make him equally as dependent as the Philosopher’s Stone would have. It’s been established in canon that you cannot make yourself immortal without help; either you rely on the continued existence of your Horcruxes or your supply of the Elixir.

And while the Elixir represents the positive aspects of eternal life, like renewal, rebirth, and the cyclical nature of the universe (see above the ouroboros of Cleopatra the Alchemist, one of the four women who knew how to make the philosopher's stone), a Horcrux is antithetical to life. It represents disorder, and once the creator of Horcruxes dies, they are unable to move on from Limbo -- shut out of the cycle. Harry describes Tom’s mangled soul as looking like a flayed and mutilated baby -- permanently immature and stagnant.

This theme of destruction is furthered by the Golden Trio’s discussion on how to reverse the process:

Ron: "Isn't there any way of putting yourself back together?"

Hermione: "Yes, but it would be excruciatingly painful."

Harry: "Why? How do you do it?"

Hermione: "Remorse. You've got to really feel what you've done. There’s a footnote. Apparently the pain of it can destroy you. I can’t see Voldemort attempting it somehow, can you?"

With this in mind, we can surmise that Tom is either (a) impatient, which we know he is not (b) there was some deeper reason for favouring Horcruxes -- so, yes, I believe that either metaphorically or literally, this was self-harming behaviour.

He takes on the name of Lord Voldemort because he hates himself, Tom Marvolo Riddle. He hates the Muggle part of himself so much that he’s willing to tear apart his entire being. 

"Voldemort, is my past, present, and future, Harry Potter..."

If that isn’t renouncement of himself, I don’t know what is. He was clearly not born Voldemort.

While of course, this does NOT excuse ANY of his actions, I find it vastly implausible that the likes of Malfoy, Mulciber, Carrow, etc... would have been welcoming in any way, shape or form to an assumed ‘Mudblood’ in scruffy secondhand robes from a London orphanage, and as such, indoctrinated him into his fanatic belief in blood-purity via antagonizing him. 

(Imagine Hermione, but poor and without parents, in the 1930s/40s. She would not have been treated well in Slytherin, either.)

Children are more vicious than you think. And while Tom probably gave as good as he got at Wool’s Orphanage (and was possibly an active aggressor himself), Hogwarts wouldn’t have been a level playing-field. (I’ll talk a bit about this and the significance of the Gaunt Ring in Part 2).

In other terms, I think Tom was bullied for having dubious origins. That’s often the swiftest way to radicalize someone, and would have left Tom with a crippling sense of self-hatred that I don’t think he would have even picked up from the orphanage.

(And it’s possibly this early experience with relational aggression that results in his constant need to be on the offensive/defensive, distrust of others, and fear of vulnerability. To me, this is an archetypal response of someone who was a past victim of bullying.)

Why else would an extremely powerful half-blood subscribe so strongly to those beliefs? (Rather than discriminating via amount of raw power or something -- because what Tom is immensely proud of when Dumbledore meets him is his ability, not his parentage). But I digress.

Now, Tom Riddle is never, ever quietly menacing like this. The mask is either completely on or completely off. We never see this character angry. Tom Riddle, when the mask slips off, is fury incarnate. Anger is the one emotion he doesn’t find weak; the one emotion he’s completely and utterly honest with.

Besides, that brings me to my next point. Tom’s not quite so austere. In fact, he’s quite witty, and often quite pleased with himself.

Just look at the difference in their body language. Tom has much more fluidity (he’s circling Harry, the head-tilt, the eyebrows move and he smiles a bit) than the other character, who has so much tension. Yes, they’re both menacing, but in completely different ways. Tom is comfortable with his actions, no matter how shitty they are. This other guy doesn’t like doing what he’s doing, but he’s going to do it, anyway.

Contrasted with the above, Tom’s unawareness of himself is such that we end up with a character who has a bizarre mix of extreme self-hatred and high self-esteem -- he always believes he is in the right -- in this case, doing Salazar Slytherin’s noble work -- while going to extreme, self-destructive lengths, such as tearing himself in half at the mere age of sixteen.

So, sorry... I kind of get the appeal, but... I don’t like the fancast.
