Rewatched 11/17/2024
★★★★☆
So, if Mr. Bean was at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, there's a chance he met, or at the very least was in the same room as Wong Kar-Wai, which is pretty sweet. Now I'm thinking of Mr. Bean in Chungking Express romantically cleaning someone's apartment and I love the feeling it gives me

Between The Holdovers, American Fiction, Shiva Baby, many others, and now this, the character actor led dramedy is in a real good place in the 2020s, and I'm all for it. Kieran Culkin is one of the most exciting actors to watch right now; he gives off a similar, talkative, charismatic vibe in this, like his performance in Succession, but in a much more huggable, and approachable way. Jesse Eisenberg is great too, that dinner scene where he's confessing to the group is some of the best acting he's ever done. Together, they're unstoppable, and I desperately want to see them together again asap. So many great moments; the rooftop sessions, the scene at the cemetery, the slap! This one's really, really good.
Loving people is hard sometimes, especially ones that have been there since the beginning. But it's worth it.

Hugh Grant is fantastic in this; one of my favorite performances of the year. He has a certain "control" that a lot of characters like this usually lose halfway through the movie, which has been done so often it's become a bit boring, but he keeps it going, and honestly seems to understand the assignment more than the filmmakers. The two leads are pretty good too. Sadly, the writing is a big too pleased with itself, lacks any subtlety, and the cinematography, as well as the music I found to be so, so bland. Kind of got some trashy entertainment value out of it, but couldn't enjoy it any further than that.
