hey arwen!! what are some tv shows you love recommending to people, and what is one you NEVER recommend (either for your sake or theirs agshdls)?

recommendations:

leverage (2008-2012). it's got found family. it's got fuck the government and the rich. it's got heist plots so tight that the fbi had to send the showrunners a cease and desist. what's not to love?

the good place (2016-2020). i have nothing more to say except THE show of all time

the haunting of hill house (2018). who wants to be really sad and think about family and grief and mortality???

derry girls (2018-2022). was talking w some friends about this show a few days ago and one of them said "everyone in their right mind would love this show." and she was correct

bbc ghosts (2019-2023). SO fucking underrated. everyone should be watching this show

something i NEVER recommend:

doctor who (2005-). it's the dumbest show ever made and should actually probably be required viewing for everyone alive. the thing with who (and txf!) is that it requires a very specific sort of freak to be into it, so i don't recommend it to absolutely everyone i know the way i do with the others

Okay this is a crazy deep cut but: Bride Wars AU. Blair & Serena have been planning their weddings together since they were little girls, but when they end up getting engaged at the same time and their weddings end up on the same date, they enter into a fierce competition. Serena & her fiancé Nate grow closer, while Blair & her fiancé Chuck seem to grow further and further apart…and it doesn’t help that Blair seems to have some sort of connection with Serena’s stepbrother Dan too.

Me:…because magically turning 18 doesn’t suddenly magically change your opinions on things? Realizing your in an abusive situation like that can take time and deconstruction. And realistically is more likely to happen once those 6 aren’t around her constantly

And they have trust fund so the amount of connection should be withering away. But they need to start seeing it themselves before they can realize what is wrong here

i watched the livestream of trump signing executive orders and answering questions from the press. here are some of the big ones + other things mentioned today:

trump declared a national emergency at the southern border + is getting the US military more involved in stopping "invasions including mass migration"

no one can declare asylum in the US

all existing appointments for people wanting to legally become US citizens are canceled

birthright citizenship (aka the 14th amendment) is now gone

ICE sweeps beginning "soon," not specifying when (though there are rumors it's starting tomorrow in sanctuary cities such as chicago)

mexican cartels are now designated "foreign terrorist organizations" and trump is not opposed to US troops entering mexico to eliminate them

he restored the death penalty for "crimes committed by illegal aliens"

biden had signed an executive order attempting to stop cops from using chokeholds or doing no-knock warrants. trump just revoked that order

25% tariffs on canada and mexico begin on feb 1 2025 — expect a lot of produce imported from mexico to get more expensive soon

tariffs on china will begin soon, not specified when

trump said he intends to take back the panama canal, did not specify when or how

january 6 insurrectionists are to be immediately released/pardoned

he pardoned the leader of the proud boys

tiktok has a 90 day extension, during which the US gov will try to buy 50% of tiktok. trump said he no longer cares that china is "spying on our young people," but he wants to buy half of tiktok so the US government "can police it a little bit, or a lot." if tiktok will not sell, it will be banned in the US again.

elon musk, the wealthiest person alive, who has been given his own vaguely-defined US government agency, did a nazi salute on stage at the presidential podium. neo-nazis are already celebrating

Ghost doesn't cutesy talk cats, he talks to them like other adult men and it's hilarious.

They're at a safehouse, and Ghost is listening to the radio, Price hears him talking to someone, and he's confused because both of his sergeants are conked out asleep.

So, he walks around the corner and finds Ghost sitting on a step with the radio playing and a stray kitten biting his laces while he talks to her. "I don't believe shoelaces constitute part of a balanced diet."

John just sits down on the step next to him and ignores how his knees click. "What's her name?"

"She's yet to disclose name or rank, but given that she's clearly smarter than those two through there, I'd say she's a lieutenant." He responds so dryly that John can't help but snort.

"Ah, I see. Making her way through the ranks at her young age, impressive." He leans forward to pet the kitten, flattening down the tuft of fur sticking up on her head.

"She's a hard worker, look at those paws. Grubby, she's been busy."

The kitten offers them a mewl in response, and he nods accordingly.

"She's stern, reminds me of Laswell."

That makes Ghost laugh.

For reasons known only to adolescent girls my friend Kate and I started communicating with extremely loud calls of, “Ka-kaw!” at some point during high school.

When trying to locate each other on the quad in lieu of cell phones we made do with good old fashioned screeching. The first call was always a lower tone. When one of us heard the cry we’d immediately echo it back at a higher pitch like dinosaurs playing Marco Polo.

This was probably obnoxious for all our classmates but man did we zero in on each other right quick. It was great. I never had to look for her in a huge crowd I just had to unleash my lack of social decorum in sonic waves. My only defense was that we only used it for out of doors. We weren’t monsters.

It served us extremely well the one time we went skiing together. She was a newer skier and got off the ski lift before I did after a stroke of bad luck and poor planning on our parts. By the time I had my skis on the snow I couldn’t see her. Worried, I took off down the mountain, not spotting her.

I planted my skis when I realized I must have passed her somehow. She couldn’t have made the same time as me. I threw my head back and shrieked, “Ka-kaw!!”

The sound cut across the cold thin air, sharp and carrying. To my delight and the surprise of several snowboarders going past me there was an answering “Ka-kaw!!!” from further up the mountain, reverberating joyously.

I’ve had this turkey post pinged several times, I can only say that I’m glad my friend and I aren’t the only bird girls out there.
