JOLY HAS BURIED HIMSELF in his medical textbooks. He’s especially been reviewing battlefield injuries. Of course, Joly hopes it’ll all come to naught. He has every hope possible that Enjolras’ revolution will be peaceful, with no injuries to anyone. Privately, however, Joly has a sinking suspicion it will not be so simple.

His head rises from his book at Enjolras’s call. Joly finds a smile, folds his book shut, and strides to join him. “Already issuing orders?” Joly teases. The Musain is a drafty old building; he cannot deny that the fire’s warmth does not extend far.

FACED with adversity feels to be more melodramatic than what the punishment actually entails. Surely Logan could have gone away with a slap on the wrist but as the new kid lies in a hospital bed, he figures a college play is better than the hell his guilt manifests. He knows how he got into this predicament; his anger lies in the why. It was supposed to be harmless fun, a right of passage that he himself had undergone. He couldn’t be the wet blanket, not when he’s finally found a family in his friends -- something he could never find at home. And so he pushed; he deceived the boy that just wanted to fit in and now he’s stuck trying to find it in him to care enough about acting.

He pushes through the double wide-set doors with a huff, glaring at anyone whose eyes pass him with curious interest. Logan keeps his head held high, sauntering as if he wants to be here and that they should be grateful that he is. There’s no professor in sight, or at least not one that he recognizes and fuck, if this is going to be run by the student community, then jail time isn’t looking all that grim.

He gives up and strides towards her. Logan knows she’s not to blame, knows that she wasn’t even there when the cops came but her innocence strokes his frustrations to no end. No one can be that good, not when the world is how it is. 

“You in charge?” His voice is gruff but he has no plans on softening it, not for the angel over here. “Just tell me what to do so I can get the hell out of here.”

His time in Sweden was minimal, but it at least afforded him a comfortable bed with 500 thread-count bed sheets. Jolie’s couch, on the other hand, seemed made out of stone. Then again, it was easier to lay blame on a piece of furniture than his own anxieties. Since arriving in L.A., it’s felt as if he was biding his time. Caught in a state of flux, never quite announcing his return or looking for anywhere permanent to stay. The in-between has been a comfortable sanctuary for a year now, and Elliott finds the prospect of leaving it daunting. Then again, just by showing up at Jolie’s doorstep, he’s taken a step in that direction. Who else would knock him back to reality, than the woman who’s been his pace car since childhood? 

As if she could hear the internal complaint, he lifts his head from the edge of the couch. A mildly irritated, but mostly appreciative look on his face.

“How many top singles do you have again?” He asks rhetorically, before gesturing to the couch. “You’d think you can afford a half-decent couch.” He grunts, straightening his back and flinching only slightly at the stark sunlight beaming into the room. Even so, there’s something comforting about seeing Jolie like this. They hadn’t always kept the same pace in life, and as is expected, Jolie is ahead of him even in sobriety. A picture of what Elliott might expect to be, if he manages through his return unscathed. He likes the look of her like this - alert, endearing, alive. Despite himself, he allows for a sentimental smile. “In case I haven’t said it yet. You’re looking a lot better these days.” A truth that comes from someone who’s seen her in all facets, and prefers this the best. “Now what’s for breakfast?”

“If you die, can I get your Pista?”

Charles lifted his head, shooting you an unimpressed look. 

“What? I just thought we should cover all bases,” you defended, knocking your shoulder against his. 

You knew exactly what was going through his head. You knew he was overthinking the whole thing, making up the worst assumptions and how it could affect the time he would have to take off training. You knew he was working himself up like he tended to do, falling silent and allowing his only company to be himself.

It was the exact reason you insisted on coming with him.

“And out of everything I own, you want my car?” Charles questioned, his eyebrows raised. 

“Yeah well, you treat that thing like your baby—minus the parking skills,” you said with an innocent smile spread across your face. “Surely that makes me a step-mother or some sort of parental figure.”

“The way your brain works amazes me every day,” he murmured with a shake of his head.

“You love me,” you sang, nudging his shoulder once again and, this time, he lifted his arm to wrap it around your shoulder. 

“Unfortunately, I do. Even when you’ve started planning for my death before I go into surgery,” he mused, but you could hear the underlying hint of fear. The one he didn’t really want to admit, but the one that you saw as clear as day anyways.

“Everything is gonna be fine,” you reassured him and lightly squeezed his knee. “Who else am I gonna look down on the top step of the podium if not you?” 

He rolled his eyes. “It is truly a miracle I love you.”

“I’m the best thing in your life and you know it, Leclerc,” you countered, poking his side. 

Charles’ face softened. “Yeah, you are.” 

“Charles Leclerc!” 

He turned to look at the nurse who was waiting for him by the doors, a kind and welcoming smile on her face. You watched the way his face dropped a little, the way his body tensed against yours and you squeezed his knee again. 

“You’re coming back to me, Charlie. It’ll be fine.”

You sighed deeply, taking a glance at the boy in the passenger seat of the car. He had a lovesick smile on his face, his cheeks flushed pink and a little bit of drool on the edge of his mouth. He looked adorable—and fucking hilarious if the pictures you sent to his brothers were anything.

However, since the second he had woken up from the procedure, Charles seemed adamant on only rambling your ear off in French. No Italian or English to be heard. Just French. Just the one damn language that you were hopeless in, despite the many years you knew the Monegasque.

“J’ai hâte de t’épouser,” he sighed dreamily as he stared at you with an expression that made your chest tighten.

*I can’t wait to marry you

“I don’t know what you said but me too, buddy,” you said as you reached over to softly pat his thigh. 

However, the boy was one step ahead of you and quickly grabbed your hand to intertwine with his own.

“Regarder!” He giggled, holding your joined hands up proudly. “Nous sommes connectés pour toujours maintenant!” 

*Look! We are connected forever now!

“You’re so lucky you’re cute,” you commented, fighting the odd urge to bite back a smile even when you had no understanding of what he said. “I might need to call your mother if you keep up this whole French act.”

“Oui, appelle-la! C’est aussi ta famille, mon amour!” Charles nodded.

*Yes, call her! She is your family too, my love!

“You know, these embarrassing videos don’t work if even I don’t understand them,” you added, shooting him a look but he just smiled back at you, and you couldn’t really be mad at that.

As expected, he regretted agreeing to this the second he'd spoken, but Jolie looked at him with such an excited, grateful look, that he instantly knew there was no way for him to back down now. "Yeah, yeah," he said, pretending to dismiss her words while also pretending that her touching his arm didn't have his heart racing. They were friends, that definitely wasn't supposed to happen. "At the ass-crack of dawn every day, taking all the shitty customers and doing the dishes," he warned, as if he'd ever actually enforce that. Still, he sighed when she talked the specifics of their plan, but then he nodded. "I'll close the diner early and pick you up," he offered. Then, remembering what she'd told him about her parents, he tilted his head to the side and looked annoyed, even before he'd asked his question. "Tell me I don't have to bring a suit."

jolie bounced her leg under the table in anticipation of his answer, while also trying to muster up the most convincing puppy-dog look she could make. she'd practically spend her whole life in debt to matty if she had to. "thank you, thank you." she repeated, reaching across the table and grabbing his arm. "you have no idea what this means to me, okay?" jolie nodded at this words, laughing a little bit. "done. consider it a deal. i'll be up at the ass-crack of dawn every day. for that matter, i'll take all the shitty customers for the next month too." she took a sip of her drink. "so we'll leave after work on friday. go home, grab our stuff first and all that." / @virtuesuncounted
