Alcoholism
We live in a world where people often use alcohol just to escape from the reality of their lives and get through a hard time. Everytime we hear the word "alcohol" and it always comes to our mind that it is not a good thing and it has been our culture to call the people who used to drink like "lasinggera, adik, pa-cool, low class, pokpok, walang pangarap" caused by our careless tongues and kills their dignity instantly. We live in a world that's full of people who used to criticize someone without knowing anything or even hearing something about that person. We know nothing but we always have something to say, we judge them based on what we only see.
Alcohol is one of the best ways in expressing what's inside of us. Alcohol is not that bad but we should know how to control it. If we are going to drink, we should keep it moderate. Alcohol has its good side and it provides some benefits. According to mayo clinic, it reduce our risk of developing and dying from a heart disease, it possibly reduce our risk of diabetes, and it possibly reduce our risk of stroke. Another benefits of alcohol, informations I gained from "eat this, not that" are alcohol can soothe sore muscles, cranberries and vodkas can boost our creativity, tequila can help us lose weight, beers can help us reduce the risk of kidney stones by 30 percent, it can lowers heart attack risk in women, beers can alleviate menopause symptoms, beers can also strengthen our bones, it can also protect our brains, it can also help us recover fast post-work out, wines is weight-loss friendly, wine can make us live longer and it can boost our confidence.
According to "medical news today", alcohol is the person while alcoholism is the illness. An alcoholic is the one who sufffers from alcohol obsession. Alcoholism is what they so call "the long-term chronic disease." It should also be acknowledged that there's truly a growing trend away from using the term "alcoholic" as it perceived to be on a negative label. Instead, we may hear the person referred as "a person who suffers from alcohol disorder." We consider them as "alcoholics" because they are obsessed with alcohol and they can not control how much they consume, even if its giving them such problems in school, work, home and financial. Alcoholism is a dangerous disease that many of us suffers today.
According to "health place", alcoholism is a disease characterized by the habitual intake of the alcohol. It is a chronic alcohol use to degree that interferes with physical or mental health, or with normal social or work behavior. Alcoholism is a disease that produces both psychological and physical addiction. Alcohol is the central nervous system depressant that reduces anxiety, inhibition, and feelings of guilt. In high doses, it can damage our bodies, cause loss of consciousness and even death.
Alcoholism is obviously, one of the most leading problems throughout the world. Overdosing is the most common in the rate of death percentages in the universe. When we starting to become addicted with alcohol, some of symptoms will hit us. We will be having strange behaviors, including drinking alone, not eating or eating poorly, making excuses to drink, missing work or school because of drinking, giving up important social, occupational or recreational activities because of alcohol use, neglecting personal hygiene, becoming violent or angry when asked about alcohol matter, and having a high tolerance of drinking.
Alcohol use disorder may also experience some physical symptoms including alcohol cravings, withdrawal symptoms when not drinking, tremors ( involuntary shaking ) the morning after drinking, and having problems in relationship, interaction, law, financial, and other struggles we could get from the obsession. Most of people used to drink alcohol because of a problem matter. Their problems in society, work, school or even inside them. According to some psychologists, people increased motivation to consume alcohol because of some reasons, including the act of rebellion, especially the teenagers who are struggling with their lives and they feel anxious about everything they encounters, being stressed, having a tons of paper works in office or even in school, gaining woes from our insecurities, especially when someone left us because of our physical appearance or if we have no money, the impulsive personality, social norm, peer pressure and environment.
Me, as a teen, I am one of the teenagers who faced alcoholism. I was once an alcoholic the past few years. I was influenced by the people around me. I am a product of a broken family, and I've been through a lot, I learned to cut classes, I felt worthless because caused by the comparison between me and my brother when it comes to academic or even other performances, I've been wounded up caused by anxiety and I was filled with bitterness, and I used to cut myself because I felt like it was one of the ways to ease the pain, I was once lost. I started from drinking beers.
Then my friends told me to try something new. We used to drink during school days, or even at weekends. I became a rebel, we used to drink 10 to 15 sets of gin, 3 to 5 bottles of beer, and we learned to smoke while drinking. My emotions invaded my mind. I wanted to disappear, I wished death, because I felt like I was the world's biggest failure, I was worthless and my life was pointless. We've been addicted to alcohol, to the point that we get angry when our parents didn't give us money, the body finds for a drink session, we used to find different spots just to drink, we became obsessed in consuming alcohol. Everywhere and everytime. We were not choosing a day, a time, or even people. As long as our bodies were full of alcohol, we were okay with that. Even if we were involved into troubles, we didn't care. We felt free and we felt like we own the world. And that doesn't really make sense at all. We used alcohol to decrease the pain we feel, to avoid crying, to decrease the heavy of feelings we carry.
But then I realized, that alcohol isn't for that matter. Yes, we can drink, it is not forbidden, but it is important to control how much we consume. Alcohol will lead us to death, it can cause disappoinments and failures, it will just make the things worse. Foretunately, alcoholism can be treat. We can treat alcoholism through staying away from the people who encouraged us to drink. We have to consult to a doctor for a rehabilition. We should spend more time for our loved ones and we should pray. Alcoholism is an illness that will steal our lives, we only live once and we should know how to decide things.

Event Review (04-14-18)
"The Ridge Race Downhill Series"
One morning, the sun shines like it will be stealing us from the world where we lives, the birds were singing and flying free in the air, our tents were wet caused by condensation, and the only thing we smell is the aroma of the coffee and the delicious breakfast cooked by our daddies in the team. We spent overnight in the mountain to prepare ouselves in the huge event we proposed. An event where numbers of people came and joined the just go with the flow. It was an event for the people who has passion and heart for biking and deeply inlove with mountains. We took two months in planning and working together to build a successful outcome of the race event. We, we are team hillroads, we are the one who pursued to made things happen, we are the one who once dreamed to organize our own invitational race, we are downhillers who has dedication and passion for downhilling and wanted to give our co-riders a kind of happiness money can't afford.
Downhilling is one of the most extreme hobby, dangerous yet challenging sport, and one of the way where we can express and scream out what we feel through speeding up our chains. The racing process includes jumping, gapping, pumping while speeding in the race tracks. And when the people arrived in the event place, we welcomed them and gave them breakfast. And when they finished eating, we gathered and announced the guidelines and rules throughout the race day. And when we finished announcing, the program got started and we told the participants to register beside the music station in filling up their forms, paying, and taking their race numbers in different categories.
During the registration time, the other participants were taking pictures and socializing with each other like they had known each other for the past years ago. They got along easily and exhanged their phone number and facebook accounts like how the women do. Everyone were busy working and doing their duties. And when we accomplished the registration process, we were surpised that we got 137 riders to play and speed along the tracks. It was really a huge event!.
The time has come and the riders started climbing the mountain and reach its top for them to be able in releasing and make intervals. And hour elapsed and they already arranged the categories properly and the race began enthusiastically. The people who were watching in the finish line were amazed and entertained by the riders who hitted big jumps by whipping and scrubbing while fast speeding. We estimated their magicial official time and arranged them into ranking, and we had our own break time.
The participants reached and finished the first attempt successfully, but some of them didn't, because of too much injurires who saved and helped by the medical team, and some of them suffered from their wheelsets and marked as "DMT". When they finally had a time out, they had their healthy meal for lunch and took rest to have enough strength in hitting and climbing up for the second-time run with the same process. It was an adventurous and well-organized event. When the participants took down, we posted the official ranking of winners in different categories. We took pictures with the participants and thank them for joining the race event. We went in awarding of medals, trophies, money and gears. When darkness conquered the event area, we decided to go back in the center of the mountain and had our dinner together. We had lechon, beef and meat dishes, desserts, and other beverages that smoothened our stomachs.
We prepared for the night session and bond with each other, we grilled barbecues and hotdogs in front of the wide bonfire and we were sitting around the bonfire, and we were together as big family in creating amazing and memorable moments throughout the long exhausting day, we finally knocked down our bodies inside the tents and took a nap. It was an advneturous day, and at the same time. a fulfilling day because we finally saw that all of our plans came out with a very successful outcome complimented by participants and visitors came from different places and it was really worth the sacrifice. It wad an another day to cherish and always remember the good things happened with awesome people around. Life is just really worth living.

STOP TRYING TO BE HAPPY
If you have to try to be cool, you will never be cool. If you have to try to be happy, then you will never be happy. Maybe the problem these days is people are just trying too hard.
Happiness, like other emotions, is not something you obtain, but rather something you inhabit. When you’re raging pissed and throwing a socket wrench at the neighbor’s kids, you are not self-conscious about your state of anger. You are not thinking to yourself, “Am I finally angry? Am I doing this right?” No, you’re out for blood. You inhabit and live the anger. You are the anger. And then it’s gone.
Just as a confident man doesn’t wonder if he’s confident, a happy man does not wonder if he’s happy. He simply is.
What this implies is that finding happiness is not achieved in itself, but rather it is the side effect of a particular set of ongoing life experiences. This gets mixed up a lot, especially since happiness is marketed so much these days as a goal in and of itself. Buy X and be happy. Learn Y and be happy. But you can’t buy happiness and you can’t achieve happiness. It just is. And it is once you get other parts of your life in order.
When most people seek happiness, they are actually seeking pleasure: good food, more sex, more time for TV and movies, a new car, parties with friends, full body massages, losing 10 pounds, becoming more popular, and so on.
Pleasure is a false god. Research shows that people who focus their energy on materialistic and superficial pleasures end up more anxious, more emotionally unstable and less happy in the long-run. Pleasure is the most superficial form of life satisfaction and therefore the easiest. Pleasure is what’s marketed to us. It’s what we fixate on. It’s what we use to numb and distract ourselves. But pleasure, while necessary, isn’t sufficient. There’s something more.

The rice shortage is one of the biggest problem in this generation. It affects number of countries in the Asia region. Nature is really unpredictable about how we continue about improving rice production. It was calm before the storm, we see many people queuing for a bag of two NFA rice. Worse, observing a full square meal a day is no longer possible. It refkects on us about how we can help to counter this badly felt problem. Even at restaurants, we see a lot of leftover servings of rice knowing that there are so many famised tummies exists in resettlement areas. On my daily life, everytime I go to school, I witness families sheltered in shanties at the town pulling through lunch with mere kropek and noodles at hand. Along the area, I notices youngsters satisfying themselves with atleast modest skewers sold by hakwers. Yet, at the corner of square canteen, I see the tradeoff - Students disregarding the value of rice servings and modest viands where plates are left on the table just like that, We are living in a wicked world that no one cares about how other people feels.

Enrichment 2 ( February 3, 2018 )
How can we relieve stress?
1. Exercise
Exercise is one of the most important things you can do to combat stress.
It might seem contradictory, but putting physical stress on your body through exercise can help relieve mental stress.
And the benefits are strongest when you exercise regularly. People who exercise regularly are less likely to experience anxiety than those who don't exercise (1).
There are a few reasons behind this:
Stress hormones: Exercise lowers your body's stress hormones in the long run, such as cortisol. It also helps release endorphins, which are chemicals that improve your mood and act as natural painkillers.
Sleep: Exercise can also improve your sleep quality, which can be negatively affected by stress and anxiety.
Confidence: When you exercise regularly, you may feel more competent and confident in your body, which in turn promotes mental well-being.
Try to find an activity you enjoy, such as walking, dancing, rock climbing or yoga.
Activities that use repetitive movements of large muscle groups, such as walking or jogging, can be particularly stress relieving.
2. Consider Supplements
Several supplements are used to reduce stress and anxiety. Here is a brief overview of some of the most common ones:
Lemon balm: Lemon balm is a member of the mint family that has been studied for its anti-anxiety effects (2).
Omega-3 fatty acids: One study showed that medical students who received omega-3 supplements experienced a 20% reduction in anxiety symptoms (3).
Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat stress and anxiety. Several studies suggest that it's effective (4).
Green tea: Green tea has many polyphenol antioxidants, which provide health benefits. It may help stress and anxiety by increasing serotonin levels (5).
Valerian: Valerian root is a popular sleep aid due to its tranquilizing effect. It contains valerenic acid, which alters GABA receptors to lower anxiety.
Kava-kava: Kava-kava is a psychoactive member of the pepper family. It has long been used as a sedative in the South Pacific and is increasingly used in Europe and the US to treat mild stress and anxiety (6).
Some supplements can interact with medications or have side effects, so you may want to consult with a doctor if you have a medical condition.
3. Light a Candle
Using essential oils or burning a scented candle may help reduce your feelings of stress and anxiety.
Some scents are especially soothing. Here are some of the most calming scents:
Lavender.
Rose.
Vetiver.
Bergamot.
Roman chamomile.
Neroli.
Frankincense.
Sandalwood.
Ylang ylang.
Orange or orange blossom.
Geranium.
Using scents to treat your mood is called aromatherapy. Several studies show that aromatherapy can decrease anxiety and improve sleep (7, 8, 9).
4. Reduce Your Caffeine Intake
Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee, tea, chocolate and energy drinks. High doses can increase anxiety (10).
People have different thresholds for how much caffeine they can tolerate.
If you notice that caffeine makes you jittery or anxious, consider cutting back.
Although many studies show that coffee can be healthy in moderation, it's not for everyone. In general, five or fewer cups per day is considered a moderate amount.
5. Write It Down
One way to handle stress is to write things down.
While writing down what you're stressed about is one approach, another is writing down what you're grateful for.
Gratitude may help relieve stress and anxiety by focusing your thoughts on what's positive in your life.
6. Chew Gum
For a super easy and quick stress reliever, try chewing a stick of gum.
One study showed that people who chewed gum had a greater sense of well-being and lower stress (11).
There are a couple possible reasons for this.
One theory is that chewing gum causes brain waves similar to those of relaxed people. Another is that chewing gum promotes blood flow to the brain.
Additionally, one recent study found that stress relief was greatest when people chewed more strongly (12).
7. Spend Time With Friends and Family
Social support from friends and family can help you get through stressful times.
Being part of a friend network gives you a sense of belonging and self-worth, which can help you in tough times.
One study found that for women, in particular, spending time with friends and children helps release oxytocin, a natural stress reliever. This effect is called "tend and befriend," and is the opposite of the fight-or-flight response (13).
Furthermore, both men and women benefit from friendship.
Another study found that men and women with the fewest social connections were more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety (14).
8. Laugh
It's hard to feel anxious when you're laughing. It's good for your health, and there are a few ways it may help relieve stress:
Brings more oxygen into your body and organs.
Stimulates and relieves your stress response.
Relieves tension by relaxing your muscles.
In the long term, laughter can also help improve your immune system and mood.
A study among people with cancer found that people in the laughter intervention group experienced more stress relief than those who were simply distracted (15).
Watch a funny TV show, hang out with friends who make you laugh and even find humor in your troubles.
9. Learn to Say No
Not all stressors are within your control, but some are.
Take control over the parts of your life that you can change and are causing you stress.
One way to do this may be to say "no" more often.
This is especially true if you find yourself taking on more than you can handle, as juggling many responsibilities can leave you feeling overwhelmed.
Being selective about what you take on — and saying no to what will unnecessarily add to your load — can be a good start to controlling your stress levels.
10. Learn to Avoid Procrastination
Another way to take control of your stress is to stay on top of your priorities and stop procrastinating.
Procrastination can lead you to act reactively, meaning you're scrambling to catch up. This can cause stress, which negatively affects your health and sleep quality (16).
Get in the habit of making a to-do list that's organized by priority. Give yourself realistic deadlines and work your way down the list.
Work on the things that need to get done today and give yourself chunks of uninterrupted time, as switching between tasks (multi-tasking) can be stressful itself.
11. Take a Yoga Class
Yoga has become a popular method of stress relief and exercise among all age groups.
While yoga styles differ, most share a common goal — to join your body and mind.
Yoga primarily does this by increasing body and breath awareness.
Some studies have looked at yoga's effect on mental health. Overall, they have found that yoga can enhance mood and may even be as effective as antidepressant drugs at treating depression and anxiety (17).
However, many of these studies have been limited, and there are still questions about how yoga works to achieve stress reduction.
In general, the benefit of yoga for stress and anxiety seems to be related to its effect on the nervous system and stress response.
It may help lower cortisol levels, blood pressure and heart rate and increase gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that is lowered in mood disorders.
12. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness describes practices that anchor you to the present moment.
It can help combat the anxiety-inducing effects of negative thinking (18).
There are several methods for increasing mindfulness, including mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, yoga and meditation.
A recent study in college students suggested that mindfulness may help increase self-esteem, which in turn lessens symptoms of anxiety and depression (18).
13. Cuddle
Cuddling, kissing, hugging and sex can all help relieve stress (19, 20).
Positive physical contact can help release oxytocin and lower cortisol. This can help lower blood pressure and heart rate, both of which are physical symptoms of stress.
Interestingly, humans aren't the only ones who cuddle for stress relief. Chimpanzees also cuddle friends who are stressed (21).
14. Listen to Soothing Music
Listening to music can have a very relaxing effect on the body.
Slow-paced instrumental music can induce the relaxation response by helping lower blood pressure and heart rate, as well as stress hormones.
Some types of classical, Celtic, Native American and Indian music can be particularly soothing, but simply listening to the music you enjoy is effective too (22).
Nature sounds can also be very calming. This is why they're often incorporated into relaxation and meditation music.
15. Deep Breathing
Mental stress activates your sympathetic nervous system, signaling your body to go into "fight-or-flight" mode.
During this reaction, stress hormones are released and you experience the physical symptoms of stress — your heart beats faster, you breathe quicker and your blood vessels constrict.
Deep breathing exercises can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which controls the relaxation response.
There are several types of deep breathing exercises, including diaphragmatic breathing, abdominal breathing, belly breathing and paced respiration.
The goal of deep breathing is to focus your awareness on your breath, making it slower and deeper. When you breathe in deeply through your nose, your lungs fully expand and your belly rises.
This helps your heart rate slow down, allowing you to feel more peaceful.
This video explains how to practice diaphragmatic breathing.
16. Spend Time with Your Pet
Having a pet may help reduce stress and improve your mood.
According to one study, dog owners reported lower levels of stress than non-dog owners.
Interacting with pets may help release oxytocin, a brain chemical that promotes a positive mood (23).
Having a pet may also help relieve stress by giving you purpose, keeping you active and providing companionship — all qualities that help reduce anxiety.
