It's surprising and, perhaps, a little depressing for a book so ostensibly beloved and held up as one of the finest in English literature, that Pride and Prejudice is so widely misquoted and misunderstood. It seems to be primarily viewed as a romance in the public's imagination, rather than the comedy of manners it truly is.
A large part of these misconceptions are admittedly, due to its various adaptations. I think a lot of people are surprised when they read the novel for the first time and discover that Mr Collins does not possess an affinity for boiled potatoes; that the proposal scene does not take place in the rain; that the second proposal is not made by Mr Darcy stumbling over his words at dawn and, ultimately, that he does not emerge from a lake in a wet white shirt. Nor is he really a brooding romantic hero.
The adaptations have had such a huge impact on the popular perception of Pride and Prejudice, that all of these products can be found on only the first two pages of an Etsy search of the title. All very nice products, I am sure. However, none of them contain quotes found in the original novel:
Tumblr media
(quite why you'd want to be seen in a 'barely tolerable' hoodie I don't know but... each to their own... )
I question how widely-liked the actual novel is, if those who are keen to walk around in merch or decorate their homes inspired by Pride and Prejudice, are doing so with references that are nowhere to be found in the book's pages. Adaptations are part of many of our paths to falling in love with the novel; they were part of mine. But there are so many hilarious quotes contained within the first few chapters alone, you soon realise that nothing can live up to Austen's quick, witty dialogue or her observational comedy.
Yet, even when the novel is correctly quoted, it is not always done in an apt manner. Jane Austen was deemed important enough by the Bank of England to warrant her own banknote. Released in 2017, it looks like this:
Tumblr media
I remember the controversy about the portrait, and how little it actually looks like the only (incomplete) drawing we have of Jane (which was said by those who knew her to not even resemble her all that well), but that's another matter. I'm most interested in the quote from Pride and Prejudice beneath it:
Tumblr media
Let's put the quote in context. It is taken from chapter 11, and spoken by Caroline Bingley who is trying, unsuccessfully, to capture the attention of Mr Darcy.
Why did she pick up a book? Because Mr Darcy did:
'Darcy took up a book; Miss Bingley did the same'
How much enjoyment did she derive from the book? Not a great deal, apparently:
'Miss Bingley’s attention was quite as much engaged in watching Mr. Darcy’s progress through his book, as in reading her own; and she was perpetually either making some inquiry, or looking at his page. She could not win him, however, to any conversation; he merely answered her question, and read on.'
And now comes the actual passage from which the quote is taken, which tells us why Caroline chose that particular book:
'At length, quite exhausted by the attempt to be amused with her own book, which she had only chosen because it was the second volume of his, she gave a great yawn and said, “How pleasant it is to spend an evening in this way! I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library."'
On the surface, such a quote—especially taken in isolation—would invariably lead you to believe that said character was an avid reader. However, the context demonstrates that Miss Bingley is far from a bookworm.
If you were left in any doubt, however, her next action surely confirms it:
'No one made any reply. She then yawned again, threw aside her book, and cast her eyes round the room in quest for some amusement'
As soon as Caroline realises that her quest to capture Mr Darcy's affection is futile, she throws her book away entirely; perhaps there are more enjoyable pursuits than reading, after all.
So, a quote deemed to have such importance as to be immortalised forever alongside Jane Austen on the currency of an entire nation (the design of which will likely be used for several decades) is so important in the context of the novel that it is... uh... *checks notes* ignored entirely. Right.
I mean, I don't necessarily understand why the quote had to be about reading but if it was, I could argue that a quote from Mr Darcy in chapter eight, about how extensive reading improves the mind could be far more sincere. Or why not one of the numerous lovely quotes from the novel? Obviously, an agenda was set and a quote needed to be found to match it.
Still, it is quite ironic indeed that reading actually opens your eyes to how ridiculous a choice of quote was made.
Anyway, what is my overarching point? Well, I think, largely due to its various adaptations, a majority of people believe they know the story of Pride and Prejudice. But shockingly few, despite it being consistently ranked as one of the most popular books, actually understand it on the level which it deserves to be.
This post was not intended to bash adaptations, it is absolutely fine to like them! But they are, by their very nature, going to differ from the book. That is inevitable. Yet, I think it's quite sad when people watch a film or series and believe they can possibly understand the story on the same level. Spoiler alert: you cannot. I know books are a luxury and reading is time-consuming, but Pride and Prejudice is out of copyright now. PDFs are abundant, as are audiobooks if you cannot sit and read!
Put some time and effort into understanding the novel. I promise not a single second of it will be wasted; you will gain a deeper admiration for Jane Austen's talent as an author, and you will fall in love anew with the many wonderful characters she so beautifully brought to life.

i was a reasonably big beatles fan for a while before i actually started learning more about the break up and solo years so i saw that idea of pr genius paul and unfiltered truth teller john repeated constantly. and i remember being just FLOORED when i learned paul spent the immediate pre breakup period secluded on a farm literally throwing buckets of water to chase off reporters and his big solo album aunt involved a bizarre q&a specifically because he refused to talk to individual press. while john and yoko literally gave like multiple interviews a day for much of 69-70. honestly, they were so good at it the idea is pervasive today even with people who are otherwise really savvy and knowledgeable about the beatles that i would expect to know better. even a lot of people who admit john and yoko were canny with the press still repeat the pr man paul trope.
I knowwwww. Thank you anon - I love the point about Paul and his buckets of water.
The disconnect is extraordinary. And in part it's a sign of how effective John and Yoko were - but you'd think, by now, people would have noticed how limited Paul's PR skills were.
TheyMayBeParted's rundown of the days leading up to the Get Back sessions have a fascinating contrast between Paul and John's PR approaches. On holiday in Portugal, Paul calls an impromptu press conference on the beach - the deal being, he'd speak to all of them at once and get it over with, giving them quotes and photographs in exchange for being left alone. Meanwhile, John and Yoko manage to give tailored interviews to three separate news teams during John's appointment at the dentist.
And that's really the difference: John and Yoko have a coherent message and are working proactively and very hard to get it out. Paul is basically doing damage limitation. He's doing his job, while trying to protect his privacy.
In the decades since, he's obviously got better PR teams, but he's still not a natural at it. For instance: Carpool Karaoke was a really smart PR move for him. It's been viewed 68 million times, with a very positive impact on his reputation. But he didn't recognise what an opportunity it was, and tried to pull out multiple times.
Interestingly, there's a suggestion that he was particularly nervous about going back into Forthlin Road: I suspect because he knew memories might make him emotionally vulnerable. John was never an "unfiltered truth teller", but he was phenomenally skilled at using his genuine emotions to turbocharge his narratives. Even now, Paul is freaked out by the idea of revealing himself like that.

I have a question for people who fervently argue that Arya has no potential for politics but think that Sansa will be one of the main political characters, and I'm asking this seriously.
If Arya learning multiple languages, how to tell + detect lies, how to rule her face so she doesn't reveal her emotions, being able to blend into different situations, thinking quick on her feet, knowing the importance of gathering information, being someone who makes friends wherever she goes, convincing a FM to help free Northern prisoners and participating in a coup, etc. don't make Arya capable of participating in politics...what exactly is it that you think Sansa will be doing as a political figure?

I think the fandom's hate for DA2 often forgets that the devs were forced into a like, 15 month development cycle by EA. It was pretty clear in how the game's levels were designed and reused, and it couldn't be polished into something more. But, what we got was a micro-level scale story with macro-scale consequences to the overall story of the series; it was a personal journey of an everyday person and all of their friends living in a shitty city, enduring the impossible stories of grief and change, all while dealing with the overarching consequences of the conflicts caused by a religious-political institution in real time.
Also, DA2 gave us Meredith, who is, by and large, not a god or supernatural entity, but just a woman, who was allowed far too much power that went entirely unchecked during her reign. It's a reflection of real world politicians and military leaders, which therefore makes her the most realistic type of villain in the series (and that's long before they gave her the red lyrium idol to turn her into a Boss Fight™).
Ultimately the other aspects of the games in this series - the level design, the combat, music, etc. - are all going to be subjective, especially when in comparison to the other games / your own personal preferences, but to say that it's just "objectively bad" when the story in and of itself is a departure from the other games where you get put into the role of Designated Hero™, whereas Hawke, for the most part, is Just Some Guy (gender neutral) (and this is also why I enjoy Rook in a similar-ish kind of way, where you accidentally become important at work), is really missing the point of what they were trying to do. I fully stand by the point that if Kirkwall got the DAV environment treatment today, it would be way more popular than it is.

One thing i find so interesting about feminism today is it’s like you can’t even say women are victims anymore. you say women are abused by men and people scream their heads off about how men can be victims and suddenly without anyone realizing the narrative shifted and now women are not allowed to be the oppressed minority anymore bc everyone will try to explain it away. it’s all white women tears or rich women etc. so people act like you’re Insane for saying maybe we should look out for celebrity women lol
!!!!!!!! ive been saying
it’s so fucking depressing!!! it’s like the whole amber heard thing all over again. people see it trending on tiktok that now we’re all supposed to hate her so that’s what im gonna do Lol 😝😝 without even reading up on the case and forming YOUR OWN OPINION ???? like what are we DOING !!!!! and like especially with these people who came crawling back saying like wahhh i take it all back i was just following the hype / i support amber heard now 😞 IDGAF !!!!! like you actively joined a movement that literally bullied a victim to domestic abuse. all because you couldn’t take the time to read up on the whole thing and form your own opinion ?? yall were THAT ready bully and laugh and point your fingers at a woman .. yall are not seeing heaven .
and like people just. do that. and it’s the same thing with the chappel roan situation. people aren’t paying real attention to what she’s saying and then there’s a whole hive of people ganging up on her and people get on that shit without even forming their own opinion on the matter. YALL JUST HATE WOMEN !!! how do you guys not SEE THIS PATTERN !!! a woman (celebrity) is celebrated for a while until it reaches some sort of peak and then everyone is turning on her all at once ???? it happens ALWAYS??? and it is not fucking lost on me that both amber heard and chappel roan are queer women lmao. like yeah people hate on other female celebrities too but not to this fucking degree

Reading You'll be SOR-EE! Thoughts Part 1:
It's really interesting to hear Dr. Phillips talk about certain events- especially because we've heard Leckie already discuss them- but from a different perspective. I always just find that interesting. Like Sidney talks about the same prank they would do at their training base that Leckie also mentioned doing.
He's so young though- like there's this funny story where he's not been shipped out yet, but I believe they're still in training, and traveling on a bus. They stop at this gas station, and their sergeant offers to buy everyone one beer. Phillips (who isn't even 18 yet) has never had beer so he tries it, and is just like, this is horrible, so he makes an excuse, goes out back, pours a good chunk of the beer on the ground, and comes back. He acts like he drank it, and manages to force the rest of it down, and is like, oh yeah this is TOTALLY the best thing ever- like everyone else is doing. (makes you wonder if he was the only one faking it lol)
Also Phillips has this friend- he's got a group of guys who are from Mobile/the south and the honorary southerner from like, New York or something- whose name is Deacon (not the dog). Deacon is from Mobile, and ends up becoming a Baptist minister- very stand up guy according to Phillips who can preach anything out of the Bible, and whose only vice is that he chews tobacco. He also acts as Phillips's guardian angel so to speak, trying to keep Phillips from doing anything dumb or getting into trouble (he is the mom friend, and Sidney is a teenager okay).
So for example, Phillips is at New River, and with another guy is like, I'm going to get a tattoo of the Marine devil dog because I think that's really cool. So they're in the tattoo parlor, and he's got the tattoo stenciled out, artist is ready to go, and Deacon bursts in, like Sidney no! stops the thing. Of course the artist is like, hey I need to be paid, and Deacon is like, oh sorry, here's two dollars. So Sidney never gets the tattoo, and according to him, he asks his wife years later if she would've married him if he had a tattoo, and she was like, nope, so I guess it worked out lol. Of course, tattoos were a little more taboo and risque back then so I get where Deacon was coming from.
There's also a time in Melbourne where Sidney and his friend (I think it's Tex who lied about his age and was 16 when he joined up, we'll talk more about him later) get really drunk. Deacon just chews them out like, do not be stupid, getting drunk is probably not a good idea, you will do dumb stuff (cough cough Leckie) because you are teenagers literally. Deacon is the good influence, and I really need to know how old this man was because he feels somewhat protective of these teenagers.
Anyway, wish this man made it in the show, I really do.

Recent life photos
#photo diary#image 1 & 2 - of course these are just cloud images. But a cool pattern of them :0#3 - another word count of game writing... aargh... Still debating about like allowing other people into the game discord or how early#in the process one should do that.. but social things are just so difficult for me lol.. I shall always suffer for my lack of networking an#self promotion skills. 4 - I was forced to get a new phone a few months ago because my beloved phone of like 10 years finally#broke too much. and I always like to go through the emojis and make a little memo with all my favorites. yaay little pictures of things.#5 - I FINALLY finished all the dictionary entries for the game (which has a little dictionary feature in the player's journal to note#any specific terms and keep track of them (like what 'jhevona' or 'avirre'thel' means. or to remember that the world is called Nanyevimi#and the country they're in is Asen. etc. etc.)). There are 75 defined terms so far and it took me a while to do so out of curiosity I put#all the text into a wordcounter thing and lol.. 8000 words isnt that much I guess but the 30 minute reading time is funny to me. 30 minutes#for my little tiny dictionary panel in my quaint little casual visual novel which is not even lore heavy at all. hee hee (though that's mor#like a minute here and there since obv people are not unlocking every term all at once. you complete the dictionary as you talk to people#and hear them mention new concepts over time.).. ANYWAY..#6 - a very soft and beautiful stuffed animal that I did not buy but wanted to at least document their charm.#7 - stimky boye waiting in front of his favorite straw meowring screaming for someone to play with him (he likes to chase the#straw around). 8 - matcha bubble tea my beloved. 9 & 10 & 11 - some cool flowers I saw. also featuring one of my favorites (columbines!)#Anyhow.. as mentioned in the other photo diary post.. I have just been packing and writing mostly.. The evil summer is coming of course#which me and my health issues always dread. Good news though is I finally got my passport in the mail! >:3 huzzah. Now I just need to find#some fellow aromantic asexual living outside the US willing to take one for the team and fake a marriage with me so I can get the#hell out of the country UwU (<joking) (...mostly... as in - definitely NOT my main goal. but if a viable opportunity presented itself I#would of course give it consideration lol). I know that's already highly regulated but I wonder if it's something that will become even mor#locked down as people hunt for any opportunity to flee. People are out here searching for any loophole. Frantically researching their#entire family tree seeing if there's any chance for a citizenship by descent in whatever place will take them. etc. etc. lol#So I wonder if such marriages are a thing that will come up more often. hmm.. ANYWAY..#I have almost all of my stuff packed even though I don't move until another 1-2 months. But that's the point is to have it all sorted early#in the last remaining scraps of ''cooler'' weather so that then I can just relax up until then. I'm going to try doing another scrapbook#/sketchbook this summer as a Mood Boosting effort. Just to find little things to help with the situational political existential dread and#climate woes. So on days it's too hot to function I can just glue little things to pages and doodle lol.. hopefully.. slowly getting things#off my to do list.. I reaaaaaally want to get back to playing games as it's so fun and realxing to me but..rghgh.. 500 other things..

Afton kids TOYSHK au
(An AU I came up with for shits and giggles)
So the idea is that UCN is a surprise gift by all 3 of William's children for their old man ( C.C take the lead cause that poor boy deserve it). I mean, if it hadn't been for Will's actions they wouldn't have gone this far in life ( or death) so they ought to "thank" him for that
Michael built the animatronics, for he had faced several if not all of them and has excellent art skills. Elizabeth creates the script, says the voicelines, for she is a master at playing pretend with the voice mimicking ability from the amalgamation that was Ennard. And C.C ( I'm calling him Cassidy ) with his great imagination, his connection to Will's other victims and whatever spiritual bs it was with golden freddy, formed the foundation and everything else . The siblings are having a great bonding time preparing it all for their father. He had left them in the darkness ( forgottened, trapped, abandoned- ), favouring his lifeless machines.
And just for him, they will bring it all to life.
A neverending, living nightmare.
"This is a gift . . . for us . . ."
