My two favourite AIs that hate eachother

Reminder to avoid buying anything crochet new from big stores. Crochet (unlike knit) CANNOT be done by a machine and must be done by an actual human being. The person who made it was definitely not paid an appropriate amount for their labour. Most big stores use sweatshops anyway and I know it’s hard to completely avoid buying anything from a major store. But if those specific items don’t sell, we can send a message to companies that we don’t want items made fully by hand using slave labour

This summer, avoid any new crochet items. You don’t need THAT specific top that badly

Local politics is so important and you may think "it only impacts people in my city/county/whatever" but it can have much wider impacts

Like a concrete example of this is that in Pennsylvania, local laws in Philly, Pittsburgh, and Allegheny required that companies give paid sick leave to all employees — part time and seasonal, not just full time employees. And now, some companies (including the one I work for) decided that it was easier to make one policy for the whole state of PA that followed all the local laws, instead of changing the policy based on city/county.

So what that means concretely is that now, bc these local laws got passed requiring employees get paid sick leave, everyone else in the state also got paid sick leave even though they didn't live in one of the three places that passed those laws. (well, at least everyone working for the companies with state-wide policies)

Paid sick leave is not a small thing. Being able to call out sick from work and still get paid is huge, especially if you're someone living paycheck to paycheck.

And it only took 3 local laws getting passed to make a change impacting the entire state.

Old Navy issues a new limited edition 4th of July shirt every year; they cost like five bucks so they're not the most durable, but my folks really liked for us to wear matching shirts for cookouts, so usually I'd keep an eye on the website and buy them for the family when they came out in March or April. I realized when I was home for the fourth that we probably had a decade of shirts...

Not all of these came from me or my family; I bought a few on eBay to round out the 2014-2024 set. But I thought it would be fun to clear mine out of my closet and turn them into a blanket, so I'm going to assemble them with one more panel (made from a different Old Navy shirt) and sew a real weird patriotic quilt.

Hedy Lamarr was not only a beautiful actress but also a smart inventor. Her most well-known invention was frequency hopping in 1942. This technology, used to guide Allied torpedoes during World War II, prevented the interception and jamming of radio signals by switching frequencies rapidly. Although initially rejected by the Navy, it laid the foundation for modern wireless communication technologies like Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth communication systems.
